The study presents the integration of architectural design approaches in the fashion design process suggesting a new educational method based on structural model fabrication. The paper addresses the output of an experimental collaborative practice-based workshop titled 'Fashion Clash' that mixes both architects and fashion designers. The workshop focused on testing self-structural garments following a manual workflow which is divided into three main phases, (1) modeling and form-finding, (2) assembly, and (3) fabrication. Paper-based materials are used for transforming full-scale garments into textiles. The results presented seven garments displayed at a fashion show that show the effect of the folding techniques in reaching stability and highlighting the interdisciplinary integration of architects and fashion designers. The study concludes that implementing a parametric design logic based on architectural perspective in fashion would generate innovative ways of testing self-supporting geometry. As an excellent traditional Chinese culture, the paper kite has been an indispensable part of history and culture for more than 2700 years. To inherit and develop a paper kite culture and provide new ideas for modern clothing design, the context of the paper kite in detail from the perspective of history, cultural value, shape category, and inheritance and development of paper kite culture through literature and physical images were combed and analyzed. From the perspective of social folk culture, the artistic characteristics of paper kites were explored, and the design practice of paper kite culture was analyzed from the perspective of morphological innovation, color conversion, process presentation, and design application. The emotional design and application of paper kites in textile and garment accessories were discussed, and the innovative ways between paper kites, architecture, and carriers were summarized. The research shows that the paper kite culture takes clothing as the carrier and the innovative design of geometric urban architecture, and constructs a new artistic creation method, which not only shows the artistic charm of the paper kite culture but also meets the consumption demand of multiculturalism. Made of recycled clothes, slaughtered animals, and felled trees, Bibles in Renaissance England were filled with visible traces of ecological matter, remainders that remind one that words on a page are thought fused with--and inflected by--matter. This essay places Henry Vaughan's poem "The Book" in a broader conversation about the poetics of paper: the rhetorical effects of the varied colors and qualities of paper used in the production of the vernacular Bibles that transformed reading practices in Renaissance England. Historical writers and readers, who were directly involved in a flax-to-rags-to-paper economy, recognized and commented on the natural resources from which cheap, widely distributed Bibles and other texts were made. Further, this essay models a reading strategy that attends to the natural history of books, to both the function and the form of the organic matter used to mediate human ideas. Despite its critique of Pop Art and western consumerism, the former GDR briefly promoted the 'paper dress' as an attractive, fashion novelty for its youth, consistent with the tenets of 'socialist fashion.' This essay explores the phenomenon of the paper dress, putting it in the context of GDR youth policy, the growing youth culture in the country, and Cold War ideology. It argues that the GDR's brief embrace of the paper dress, after severe state restrictions on the importation of western youth culture, was part of a gradual liberalization of GDR society. This paper reports the findings of a mixed-methods study which investigates the socio-cultural impacts of UK gendered school sport uniform and the role uniform plays in shaping female school sport experiences. Drawing on an extensive analytical survey with over 400 women of all-ages and 8 interviews with women aged 18–24, it explores how school sport uniform directly impacts female sporting experiences and participation in physical activity, and how uniform policy could be changed to promote greater female sport participation. Gendered school sport uniform continues to operate as a socio-spatial mechanism that names, frames and positions young people in heteronormative school sport spaces. This paper assesses how gendered school sport uniform contributes to the disciplining of the 'ideal feminine body' in schoolgirls and the construction of behavioural gender binaries in sport. The data reveal gendered sport uniform influences the development of a 'fear of masculinisation' in sport and common athletic-feminine identity tensions in teenage girls. The research finds gendered school sport uniform plays a major role in the high drop-out rates of teenage girls in school sport and offers practical insight into how policy could be changed to promote inclusivity, comfort and greater female sport participation. Convolutional neural network-based detection models have been extensively applied in industrial production for monitoring the use of safety protection equipment, ensuring worker safety. This paper addresses scenarios in electrical operations where the safety protection requirements are more comprehensive and stringent. This paper proposes an improved detection model, ML-YOLOv8n-Light, based on YOLOv8n, targeting issues of low detection efficiency and large model size that make deployment challenging in current safety protection equipment-wearing detection models for electrical operations. Our model confronts the disparity in safety protection equipment sizes with a novel, lightweight multi-scale grouped convolution (MSGC) scheme integrated into the architecture. A lightweight adaptive weight downsampling (LAWD) mechanism is also fashioned to replace the traditional downsampling methods, optimizing resource consumption without sacrificing performance. Additionally, to enhance the detection fidelity of smaller items, such as insulated gloves, we added feature-rich shallow maps and a dedicated detection head for such objects. To enhance the detection efficiency of YOLOv8n, inspired by part convolution, we improved the spatial pyramid pooling fast (SPPF) and the detection heads. The experiments conducted on the custom dataset power safe attire dataset (PSAD) showed that compared to the original model, mAP50 increased by 2.1%, mAP50-95 by 3.1%, with a 29% reduction in parameters, an 18% reduction in computations, and a 23% compression of the model size. There are fewer detection omissions at long distances and under occlusion, fewer false positives, and computing resources are allocated more efficiently. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Recent literature has problematized the limits of deeply held assumptions about linear, unidirectional upgrading trajectories in global value chains (GVCs). As firm and chain trajectories and sources of upgrading have changed in recent years, GVC analysis has adjusted to focus on new emerging actors and new distributions of power within value chains. After a discussion of some limits to the treatment of upgrading in the GVC literature, the paper develops a simple extension of the classical model of upgrading in ways that do not presuppose particular valuations of functional, product, and processes upgrading, and that do not fetishize upgrading as such. The paper works with case studies of four Chinese firms located in Ningbo, China. Each 'wears multiple hats' and together they provide illustrative examples of the limits of linear, unidirectional approaches of upgrading. This simple model has the singular advantage of ensuring that trajectories of business upgrading and downgrading in GVCs can be understood as always open, often operating in diverse and contradictory ways. The branded apparel industry is a multibillion-dollar global enterprise that plays a significant role in youth culture. This paper aims to explore how youth expectations and values are reshaping the industry and what the future holds for it. The paper uses a conceptual framework based on social and consumer behaviour theories to analyse the current state of the industry, identify key trends and drivers of change, and explore how these trends are affecting the expectations and values of the youth consumer segment. The paper also provides a literature review of the evolution of the industry, including the rise of fast fashion, sustainable fashion, and the impact of social media and e-commerce. The future of the industry is expected to be increasingly influenced by sustainability and social responsibility, as well as advancements in technology and changes in youth culture. Combining online and offline data collection during six months of ethnographic fieldwork in Southern Mozambique in early 2021, this paper explores how media and its everyday use in the Global South are impacting on, and are in turn being transformed by China. It specifically looks into the creative and personalised ways in which Chinese-made garments are sold and promoted in Mozambique via the messenger service WhatsApp. Examining how Mozambican and West African traders use WhatsApp groups and status updates to mediate the fashionability of these Chinese goods, this paper shows that the consequences of Chinese interactions with the Global South on the global media landscape transcend the mere spread of Chinese hardware and software. Going beyond dominant, state-centred narratives of Chinese influence abroad, this paper demonstrates the key role of individuals and their agency in shaping the digital impact of Global China. The press section is essential for paper machine efficiency, and its runnability is connected to the press felt properties. We studied the out-of-plane shear behavior of press felt specimens in both dry and wet conditions. Our strength tester laboratory set-up was modified to simulate pressure pulses in mechanical dewatering in the paper machine. The test arrangement used a moving upper jaw to generate dynamic stress, gluing and a watering system. Draw speeds, length of displacement, number of tensile cycles, and glue type were standardized during the preliminary work. After tests, 45 load-and-unload cycles were plotted in curves, and shear strength and modulus values were calculated. Results show that hysteresis and non-homogenous behavior, drop in maximum forces, and negative load values in the unload direction are connected to the design, density, wetness, fiber entanglement, and intersections of the specimen. Bangladesh faces a significant challenge with limited export diversification, as ready-made garments constitute approximately 85% of its exports. This paper presents a review of academic literature to understand the underlying reasons for this heavy reliance on a narrow range of export products and the obstacles in diversifying export earnings. It explores the relationship between economic development and export diversification, highlighting the role of economic complexity, human capital, and policy decisions in shaping Bangladesh's export patterns. The findings suggest that export diversification in Bangladesh is hindered by a focus on intensive margins, low economic complexity, and an export model that does not encourage industrial upgrading. The paper concludes by emphasizing the importance of primary education in promoting export diversification and the need for an industrial structure that fosters skill development and economic complexity enhancement. DNA samples recovered from items of clothing are often attributed to the wearer and one or more individuals who may have contacted the item during an alleged criminal activity. Another scenario often proposed by defence counsel is that DNA was transferred from a previously contacted item/surface unrelated to the activity of interest onto the item of clothing. Under such scenarios, DNA may also be transferred from the clothing to the item/surface with which it comes into contact. One such surface is flooring, upon which clothing may be placed while not being worn or may be contacted during wearing, such as falling or being forced to the ground. This study investigates the transfer of DNA to and from clothing and flooring when different contacts are applied between the two surfaces in an environment representative of what investigators would encounter in routine casework, a residential environment. Participants were provided with two sets of new and unused upper and lower garments to wash then wear for ~8 h inside their own home before storing them in paper evidence bags. The two sets of clothing were taken to a home occupied by unrelated individuals, where one set was placed on the floor ('passive') by the researcher while the other was worn by the participant who laid with their back on the floor, rolled to one side and back, then stood up ('active'). Within the houses sampled, the main bedroom was targeted as flooring types and histories of use were more consistent across houses and less variation in DNA profile composition was previously observed for samples collected in the same room. Samples were collected from predetermined areas of the clothing and flooring where contact did and did not occur. Reference profiles were obtained from wearers and individuals they lived with, as well as occupants of the home. DNA transfer was observed from clothing to flooring and from flooring to clothing in both 'active' and 'passive' situations, though greater where a situation involved the application of pressure and friction ('active'), and only where contact between clothing and flooring occurred. Results from this study inform on the composition of DNA profiles one is likely to obtain from an item of clothing or a flooring surface following a similar contact event between the two substrates and will aid investigators when interpreting DNA evidence recovered in a domestic environment and the activities leading to its transfer and subsequent recovery. • Frequent DNA transfer between worn clothing and flooring surfaces upon contact. • Occasions of DNA transfer increased with the application of pressure and friction. • DNA transfer more commonly observed on worn clothing compared to flooring surfaces. • Bi-directional transfer between clothing and flooring was observed. • DNA contributors and yields from clothing and flooring assessed against use histories. • Probabilities have been generated for some DNA profiling outcomes. Objective: The purpose of this article is to identify the ideological functions of economic theory using the historical case of the opinions of classical economists on the poor law as an example (treating ideological sets of ideas as justifications for the social order). Research Design & Methods: The research method adopted in this paper is an analysis of the text carried out in the context of its social function. Findings: The article analyses some moral and social aspects of the emergence of economic theory and shows classical economists' criticisms of the Old Poor Law as rationalisation of social prejudices of upper classes of society. The essence of the discourse of mainstream economists has been to show low moral resources in the working class as the cause of poverty, together with the thesis that social assistance perpetuates this condition. The opposite of these theories were John Barton's arguments, portraying welfare as an investment in the moral resources of the poor, allowing them to return to the ranks of working people. This dispute was forgotten for many years, but seems still relevant in the 21st century context. Implications / Recommendations: This paper supports the opinions of eminent scholars (like Blaug or Lindert) that the main problems with poverty are essentially the same in our times as in the 19th century. Blaming poor people for their poverty seems as familiar to us today as it was two hundred years ago. Thus the issue of the welfare state is more moral and political than it is theoretical. The paper presents the application of MTM, RAV and ZAK methods in the determination of working methods and time norms for the technological process of sewing. The technological operation of sewing the back sleeve seam on a men's jacket is used for the study. The paper presents the designed workplace in a real production process. In addition, the appropriate working method and the time norm are determined using the MTM (Method Time Measurement), RAV (determination of sewing time for straight seams) and ZAK (determination of sewing time for curved seams) methods. The aim of the study was to combine the methods for determining different types of time (manual, machine-hand and machine) for performing technological operations and precisely calculate the time norms. For the described methods of determining the production time, computer programs were developed that speed up the calculation of the time norm. If the working method is defined in advance and the characteristics of the sewing machine are known, the time norm for each technological operation can be determined in advance. Based on these calculations, it is possible to determine the total time for the production of clothing in advance and thus to plan and schedule the production process and plan the delivery dates to customers. The results show that the technical equipment of the sewing machine and the working method have an influence on the structure of the technological sewing process. By choosing an appropriate working method, the workload and fatigue of the workers is reduced, as an appropriate number of auxiliary hand sub-operations are used. We present a technique for simulating plastic deformation in sheets of thin materials, such as crumpled paper, dented metal, and wrinkled cloth. Our simulation uses a framework of adaptive mesh refinement to dynamically align mesh edges with folds and creases. This framework allows efficient modeling of sharp features and avoids bend locking that would be otherwise caused by stiff in-plane behavior. By using an explicit plastic embedding space we prevent remeshing from causing shape diffusion. We include several examples demonstrating that the resulting method realistically simulates the behavior of thin sheets as they fold and crumple. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The International Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) regime currently endeavours to protect complex subject matters ranging from art and fashion to software. This paper will specifically examine the key international instruments (issued by the World Intellectual Property Organization [WIPO] and those applicable in the European Union) governing the apparel industry. To that end, it will analyse the different instruments governing the sector and will also highlight in brief the various initiatives undertaken by the WIPO towards facilitating and harmonising the process of protecting the different facets of the fashion sector. Further, we will look at the current statistics available on the different databases and will gauge how the sector has fared. Over the course of the paper, the authors will highlight the gap in the protection granted to garments or cloth weaving techniques belonging to indigenous communities (such fashion articles fall under the broad domain of the traditional cultural expression of a community) ranging from handlooms and handicrafts to unique textile and design prints, motifs, symbols, accessories, and so on, as compared to international fashion corporations. The existing gaps would be analysed in the current international IPR regime which makes it challenging to apply the current norms and standards of IP to elements of traditional and cultural clothing of indigenous communities. It will locate a few examples of communities utilising IPR to protect and promote their cultural heritage in the garment industry. Continuing on this tangent, the paper will look at how the IP regime can be adequately expanded to incorporate the needs and interests of indigenous communities and promote their fashion and culture. Minimalist fashion has become a key element of the wider minimalist movement that promotes reducing one's wardrobe space to a bare minimum of essential items (or a 'capsule wardrobe') with few, quality items that coordinate. Minimalist‐inspired 'fashion challenges', in which participants are challenged to only wear a certain number of garments over a certain time period, have also gained increasing momentum, particularly in the USA and the UK. This study considers 'Project 333' (in which participants must only wear 33 items of clothes over a three‐month period), and the 'Six Items Challenge' (which requires participants to only wear six garments over 6 weeks), to explore their potential to encourage sustainable fashion (non‐)consumption. This is achieved via an analysis of 20 blog posts of individuals reflecting on their own participation in the two challenges and an auto‐ethnography of my own participation in the Six Items Challenge. The research reveals that while just over half of participants mentioned sustainability as a motivation or outcome of their participation in a fashion challenge, the challenges' focus on garment reduction, re‐use, repair, and not shopping while partaking in them, renders them sustainability driven in practice. Almost all challenges also mentioned personal benefits of conducting a fashion challenge (such as money and time saved plus greater fashion creativity), which could be seen as a helpful way in which to encourage their uptake. However, the paper also considers the idealisation of 'perfect' minimalist wardrobe spaces and subsequent fashioned identities and issues regarding who has the pecuniary means to embrace the quality over quantity narrative of the challenges. The paper therefore concludes that fashion challenges do have the potential to encourage more sustainable fashion practices, but they simultaneously raise tensions regarding idealised minimalist fashioned identities. Purpose: Used clothes supply chains are becoming increasingly complex, fragmented and less transparent due to rising volumes of discarded clothes and its dispersed reverse logistics operations across the Global North (GN) and Global South (GS). While it has a promising impact on circular economy and international trade growth, increasing exports of used clothes and overflowing landfills raise some negative concerns on its overall sustainability. This paper addresses the dichotomy that exists in terms of interpreting the sustainability credentials of used clothes supply chains. Design/methodology/approach: A systematic literature review was carried out and 55 articles were examined to identify the triple bottom line (TBL) sustainability impacts of used clothes supply chains. TBL sustainability issues were identified, reflected through the lens of natural resource-based view and interpreted in the form of propositions. Findings: The paper pinpoints seven TBL sustainability concerns and prescribes three sets of strategic resources required in glocal used clothes supply chains for mitigating these. These are (1) slowing the supply chain by tackling poor quality, overproduction and oversupply issues, (2) improving logistics/supply chain infrastructure and ecosystem collaboration and (2) embedding transparent environmental, social and governance (ESG) measures taken by both value chain actors and regulatory bodies, for embracing system-level sustainable development. Originality/value: This is one of the first studies to analyse TBL sustainability of glocal north–south used clothes supply chains. Trustworthiness and product traceability are essential factors in the apparel industry 4.0 for establishing successful business relationships among stakeholders such as customers, manufacturers, suppliers, and consumers. Each stakeholder has implemented different technology-based systems to record and track product transactions. However, these systems work in silos, and there is no intra-system communication, leading to a lack of complete supply chain traceability for all apparel stakeholders. Moreover, apparel stakeholders are reluctant to share their business information with business competitors; thus, they involve third-party auditors to ensure the quality of the final product. Furthermore, the apparel manufacturing industry faces challenges with counterfeit products, making it difficult for consumers to determine the authenticity of the products. Therefore, in this paper, a trustworthy apparel product traceability framework called ChainApparel is developed using the Internet of Things (IoT) and blockchain to address these challenges of authenticity and traceability of apparel products. specifically, multiple smart contracts are designed and developed for registration, process execution, audit, fault, and product traceability to authorize, validate, and trace every business transaction among the apparel stakeholders. Further, the real-time performance analysis of ChainApparel is carried out regarding transaction throughput and latency by deploying the compute nodes at different geographical locations using Hyperledger Fabric. The results conclude that ChainApparel accomplished significant performance under diverse workloads while ensuring complete traceability along the complex supply chain of the apparel industry. Thus, the ChainApparel framework helps make the apparel product more trustworthy and transparent in the market while safeguarding trust among the industry stakeholders. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Fashion revolves in circle, reflecting historical, cultural, political, economical and social life of a nation as noted by Ogunduyile. It hence, satisfies the apparel accessory wants and needs of the people at a given period of time, thereby reflecting man's environment, and stands as a means of non-verbal communication in revealing the culture and history of a people. Thus, it is innovative and reflects popular values of the society and changes when such values change. However, Nigeria as a country is not an exception to this norm. Although, desirable and inevitable the Nigeria modern fashion may be, the pace and degree of changes in contemporary Nigeria fashion necessitated by the influx of foreign cultures has continued to put traditional Nigerian hand-woven fabrics such as Akwa-Ocha, Aso-Oke, and Akwete among others in an adverse situation since designers use less of these fabrics for modern dress styles. As a kind of plane expression of real clothes, style chart plays an important role in the process of clothing production. In order to simplify the process of clothing style design, improve the efficiency of style design and the accuracy of clothing information expression, and generate personalized style charts for different body shapes, the research on the rapid generation of style charts based on the digitization of parts is conducted with dresses as the object. In this paper, the thin plate spline interpolation algorithm is used to make the clothing style map fit different body shapes, so that the clothing body can quickly reach the size to meet the specific body type. Then the adaptive combination of components is realized through matrix deformation based on key points, and the parameter-driven and interactive correction of key points are used to achieve the adjustment of the details of the clothing styles. Taking the waisted fishtail dress as an example, the rapid generation process of the dress style chart is elaborated and implemented, and the feasibility of the rapid generation of the style chart based on the combination of parts is verified, which provides theoretical support for the personalized customization and intelligent style design. The main goal of this paper is to study a specific element of women's depicted costumes. Pictures on stone monuments present local, so-called native women wearing complex attire of cloth, headwear, brooches, jewels, and other dress accessories. Thirteen stone monuments from Hungary depict local women with headwear-related accessories. The main questions are: what kind of accessories are they, and how can we evaluate their presence on depicted attires? I collected analogous depictions from other Provinces and studied archaeological material. Finally, I concluded that these headwear-related accessories connect to new cultural effects and the complex phenomenon of acculturation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The endless customization possibilities ensure that decorations on apparel and accessories are constantly in trend. By adding ornamental patterns, fabric embellishments are used to enhance the beauty and appeal of textiles. The fabric is adorned with a variety of surface patterning techniques and materials, such as buttons, beads, fringe, and ribbons. Textile ornamentation satisfies the human need for a visually beautiful and meaningful life, even though it may not immediately affect clothes and home textiles' ability to protect us from the weather or meet our everyday domestic requirements. Among the various embellishing techniques, tie-dye is a very well-liked and exquisite approach to give a cloth more visual appeal. Tie-dying is a hand dyeing technique whereby several pieces of material are gathered and securely tied with thread before the cloth is submerged in the dye water to create colored patterns. The knotted parts are not penetrated by the dye. The cloth is untied to expose a pattern of uneven dots, stripes, and circles when dried. Repeated tying and dipping in different colors can result in multicolored patterns. Thus in this paper we will learnt about the surface enrichment technique which is very unique for coloring the garments. In studying individual consumption behavior, an important issue is the analysis of the relation between commodity expenditure and income. The subject of this paper is the analysis of clothing, footwear and housing consumption of households in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The aim of this paper is to quantify the impact of income on household expenditure for clothing, footwear and housing, with a focus on examining the validity of Second Engel's law in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Empirical research is based on the econometric modeling of Engel curves applying single equation modeling, using microdata from the Household Budget Surveys in Bosnia and Herzegovina, which are available for four years (2004, 2007, 2011, 2015). The surveys were carried out using the uniform methodology developed by the Statistical Office of the European Union (EUROSTAT). In order to achieve the research objective, six functional forms of Engel curves have been formulated and estimated. The intensity of the impact of income on relative changes in consumption was measured using income elasticities. Based on the estimated parameters and income elasticities derived from them, the hypothesis of unit elasticity of demand for the mentioned product groups in relation to household income was tested. Empirically estimated values of elasticities imply that the validity of the Second Engel's law in Bosnia and Herzegovina was partially confirmed: while clothing and footwear expenditures became elastic over time, expenditures for housing are inelastic in observed years. By comparing the estimated elasticities for different years in which the survey was conducted, it was revealed whether there were significant changes in the preferences of households in Bosnia and Herzegovina in the observed period.
