VIOLENCE against women , *EMIGRATION & immigration , *HOUSEHOLD employees , *WORKING class - Abstract
Before the COVID-19 pandemic, thousands of Moroccan women crossed the border between Melilla and Morocco on a daily basis to work in domestic employment, a consolidated niche sector of cross-border employment for low-skilled working-class women. When the border closed due to COVID-19 lockdowns in 2020, many decided to remain in Melilla. Following the precepts of grounded theory and using biographical interviews, the paper investigates the survival strategies these women deployed following the border closure. An ambivalent process began: on the one hand, their labour conditions worsened, exposing them to worse situations of violence; on the other, they developed strategies of resistance and agency, assuming the role of breadwinner for their families and opting for a process of emancipation through inclusion and training opportunities in the city of Melilla. GENDER differences (Sociology) , *DEPORTATION , *WOMEN immigrants , *FEMINIST criminology , *IMMIGRATION policy , *EMIGRATION & immigration - Abstract
The personal experience of crossing a border differs according to gender. Specifically, the selectivity of immigration controls means that deportation affects many more men than women. Based on the analysis of official data on the detention of people in irregular situations, detention in migrant detention centres (CIE in its Spanish acronym) and repatriations, disaggregated by sex, this paper provides some theoretical reflections on why a gender gap exists in the deportation apparatus in Spain. Taking up the feminist criminology research agenda's challenge, it seeks to contribute to the development of "criminology of mobility" with an analysis of migration control in Spain from a gender perspective. SPANISH architecture , *ARCHITECTURE , *BORDERLANDS , *NATIONAL security , *EMIGRATION & immigration - Abstract
In the past 15 years a series of apparently unconnected architectural events and assemblies have appeared in the immediate vicinity of Spain's Southern Border to improve the constructed border's functionality and capacity to respond. This paper addresses the dynamic shift the contemporary border is undergoing according to the detection of three strategies: seal, delay and contain. The critical cartography and forensic reconstruction of a series of events allow us to demonstrate the typological transformation shifting the weight of stable constructions to dynamic and instantaneous assemblies. These can no longer be said to be static solutions, but a territorial mechanism or assembly that configure and define the border. While the border architecture is a clear materialisation of sovereignty, it is necessary to question the territorial model, which is no longer represented by the rule but by the condition of operability. BORDERLANDS , *GEOGRAPHIC boundaries , *EQUALITY , *MEDICAL care , *SOCIAL services , *EMIGRATION & immigration ,SPANISH social conditions - Abstract
Taking Spain as a case study, this paper analyses the institutional production of border apparatus within reception countries, which affect very diverse areas of the daily life of migrants. Hence, rather than as a rigid line dividing the population into included and excluded, the border is approached as a flexible governance mechanism that differentially regulates access to rights. Starting by analysing the formal and informal operation of some of the institutions that manage the process (immigration offices, social services and the healthcare system), an attempt is made to give an account of the norms, requirements, administrative procedures and infra-penal mechanisms that especially affect vulnerable groups, stratifying the recognition of rights and condemning subjects to a legal limbo in which their legitimacy is - at best - blurred. The Maghreb population has been one of the largest groups of immigrants in Spain since the end of the 20th century. This has led to a noteworthy representation in the Spanish media. By focusing on national and regional newspapers during the economic crisis in Spain, the paper aims at examining the treatment of the Maghreb population and certain theoretical aspects of binomial framing of the Arab-Islamic world. A mixed methodology based on quantitative and qualitative analysis of content was used to carry out this study. The analysis concludes that the most common frame is human interest, although a negative representation of this group is offered, a fact that may lead to critical discourse and attitudes towards the Arab-Islamic world. IMMIGRANTS , *IMMIGRANT policy , *HUMAN rights , *SOCIAL integration , *EMIGRATION & immigration - Abstract
This paper makes a critical examination of the most recent developments in Spanish practice relating to the control of irregular immigration. It analyses the commitments being made in the framework of the European integration process and their implications for the control of external borders as well as the agreements concluded by Spain - treaties and non-binding agreements (memorandums of understanding, etc.) - aimed at controlling flows of people. In this context, the article also gives attention to Spain's international obligations on human rights taking its impact on the issue and the most recent internal developments into account - both in legislative changes approved and those being enacted as administrative practice. In light of the foregoing, a critical assessment of these developments and events (e.g. "hot returns") is submitted. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

RETURN migration , *GLOBAL Financial Crisis, 2008-2009 , *LABOR market , *FOREIGN workers , *BOLIVIANS , *EMIGRATION & immigration - Abstract
From 2008 onwards, the economic crisis experienced by countries such as Spain marked a turning point in migratory flows. As a result, faced with the serious reality of unemployment and the precariousness of the Spanish labour market, the option of return has become the last resort for some immigrants, and an attractive strategy for governments (of both countries of origin and destination), which attempt to manage return using special programmes. From this point of view, the aim of this paper is to examine the assisted voluntary return programmes in Spain and Bolivia and their suitability to the dynamics of return, beginning with an exhaustive review of the programmes and the perceptions on them expressed by Bolivian immigrants as part of the survey «Circulation and Return», carried out within the framework of the RETTRANS project. IMMIGRANTS , *LATIN Americans , *IMMIGRANT families , *UNEMPLOYMENT , *FOREIGN workers , *TRANSNATIONALISM , *EMIGRATION & immigration - Abstract
The crisis has started a new migration cycle in Spain. As an effect of the restrictive measures taken and the depth of the crisis, migrant inflows have reduced and outflows have increased, the latter especially among Latin Americans. This paper explores the impact of the crisis on migrant people and their families in terms of unemployment, of declining living conditions, and of legal uncertainty. In this situation, a growing minority of immigrants, particularly Latin Americans, implement transnational strategies such as return, circular migration and others. Notwithstanding this, most immigrants are facing the crisis here, combining work, social and family strategies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

DEMOGRAPHY , *RECESSIONS , *SOCIODEMOGRAPHIC factors , *IMMIGRANTS , *FINANCIAL crises , *ECONOMICS , *EMIGRATION & immigration - Abstract
One of the main effects of the current crisis is re-emerging phenomenon of Spanish emigration, especially since year 2011. This paper examines the growth of emigration from 2008 to 2012, using disaggregated data by origin, age, sex as well as geography detail at provincial level from the Residential Variation Statistics. The analyses distinguish between native-born and foreign-born with and without the Spanish nationality, and highlight recent trends as a result of the prolonged economic recession and its impact on international migration. Although the use of this dataset which contains time series data enable us to provide a relevant picture of the main demographic profiles of current emigration, the data too have uncertainties embedded within, not least because many of the new emigrants have not registered yet at the destination country. However, the data examination allows us to identify different patterns, including the main recipient countries as well as the provincial geography of emigration, and the main demographic profiles of emigrants. The results shed some light of what could be considered as Neo-Hispanic migration given the apparent diversity of outflows. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

DETENTION facilities , *EMIGRATION & immigration , *CIVIL society - Abstract
This paper presents a critical examination of the management of irregular migration flows in Spain and the legal principles and administrative practices implemented by the State in the process of expulsion that legitimise the existence of Immigrant Detention Centres (CIE). It also provides a description of the current situation of the CIE, and reports on the most recent proposals made by the Spanish government to improve the management of CIE in response to pressure exerted by civil society organisations, especially after public protests regarding the death of two inmates in December 2011 and January 2012. WOMEN foreign workers , *LABOR market , *WAGE differentials , *EMIGRATION & immigration - Abstract
The aim of this paper is to analyse how female migrants fare in the Spanish labour market, a country that has experienced impressive immigration flows during the last decade. Particularly, we explore the differential access to employment and the earning gap faced by this group, considering the interaction between two potential sources of disadvantage for migrant women: gender and migrant condition. Our findings suggest that migrant women do face this double disadvantage. In both cases, we find an economically significant gap, at least for migrants from developing countries. Regarding the former, the larger unemployment rate of female migrants is not explained by observable characteristics. In the case of earnings differential, although human capital endowments play a relevant role, both the unexplained earnings penalty associated with gender and migrant status slightly rise across the distribution of wages. MASS media & immigrants , *IMMIGRANTS in mass media , *CULTURAL identity , *ETHNIC groups in mass media , *EMIGRATION & immigration - Abstract
Immigration has become a social phenomenon with increasing importance in Spain. For that reason, media has put special focus on this issue, not only in news, but also in fiction products for television and cinema. In 2000s immigration topic appears quite often in plots and characters of serials and films. Moreover, immigrants' communities have become a new target for television programs and channels. In this paper, we will review the research that has been done about this topic and will make a catalogue of this kind of film and television works. The purpose is to find out the reasons that possibly explain this phenomenon. Those can be a mix of commercial interests, issues of the political agenda or the reflection of a social fact. Hence, we will identify the audiovisual works related to immigration, then we will classify them according to different criteria, and finally, we will raise some conclusions about the causes of this recent development. ROMANIANS , *INTERNAL migration , *GEOGRAPHIC mobility , *MIGRANT labor , *SOCIAL history , *EMIGRATION & immigration - Abstract
In the early twenty-first century, the Romanian population in Spain showed a spectacular increase. It is now the largest group of foreign population and also the most geographically dispersed. The aim of this paper is to analyze the spatial structure of internal migration by Romanians between 2001 and 2007. Data from the Statistics of Residential Variations produced by the National Institute of Statistics (INE, Instituto Nacional de Estadística) which registers municipal residents was used. The results show the sharp increase of mobility, the predominance of short-distance movements, which take place within the same province and neighbouring provinces, and the role of Madrid and the Mediterranean coast in the redistribution of interprovincial Romanian population in Spain. Geographic mobility is due to the pursuit of better living conditions, which is related to the labour market and housing, as well as social networks and the attitudes of society and local authorities towards foreigners. SOCIOCULTURAL factors , *EMIGRATION & immigration , *EDUCATION of children of migrant laborers , *SUBJECTIVITY , *NATIONAL character - Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to investigate those socio-cultural process generated by the participation of a group of sudamerican children in inmigratory family project. This involves asking questions about what kind of mechanisms are used by children to define, interpret and re-intepret their identities when their frames of socialization change, especially at school. Two arguments are developed. First, inmigration responsability, from children's view, is placed on their role as students, while education is understood as an opportunity for social and economic promotion. Second, at school, etnic and national belongings become important when they are stressed by different looks and interpretations that single them out. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

According to public opinion the increasing number of foreign population has became one of the most problematic issues in the last decade. Since 2005 immigration is the second biggest concern for Spaniards after unemployment and followed by terrorism. It is has became a state issue and a central government worry of utmost importance. The media coverage given to immigration is very important, specifically the way in which it is approached and presented to the readers. This paper shows the different perspectives or frames used by two key nationwide Spanish newspapers, El País y El Mundo, to cover one of the migration crises that took place in the Canary Islands in spring 2006. Following Framing theory, media content has been analyzed using variables to show the different ways in which these media depict the phenomenon of migration and the approach which each newspaper follows. IMMIGRATION policy , *ECONOMIC impact of emigration & immigration , *UNDOCUMENTED immigrants , *IMMIGRANTS , *EMIGRATION & immigration ,UNITED States emigration & immigration - Abstract
Despite increasing measures to control and regulate migration flows, irregular migration has grown in the last few years in Spain, Malaysia and the United States. This increase in irregular immigration has mainly been explained in relation to socio-economic factors. However, while these factors explain the presence of migration flows towards these countries, they do not succeed in explaining why an important part of these flows takes place on a non-regular basis. This can only be considered by taking into account the State and its immigration policies. Starting out from this statement, this research paper analyses to what extent, how and why the immigration policies of Spain, Malaysia and the United States produce «illegals«. This means not only analysing how and why immigration policies contribute to the increase in the number of irregular immigrants, but also how and why, by denying their rights and often their existence, they create the figure of the «illegal immigrant». As this research note demonstrates for the Malaysian case, irregular immigration is not despite immigration policies but because of them. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this analysis we make an approach to the impact and importance of a transnational perspective when studying current international migrations. More specifically, the objective of this paper is to reflect on the impact of the monetary and «social» remittances of Peruvian and Ecuadorian immigrants living in Spain, considering their households as transnational.
