The ionospheric anomalies before an earthquake may be related to earthquake preparation. The study of the ionospheric anomalies before an earthquake provides potential value for earthquake prediction. This paper proposes a method for detecting ionospheric total electron content (TEC) anomalies before an earthquake, taking the MS 7.8 earthquake in Türkiye on 6 February 2023 as an example. First, the data of four ground-based GNSS stations close to the epicenter were processed by using the sliding interquartile range method and the long short-term memory (LSTM) network. The anomaly dates detected by the two methods were identified as potential pre-earthquake TEC anomaly dates after eliminating solar and geomagnetic interference. Then, by using the sliding interquartile range method to process and analyze the CODE GIM (Center for Orbit Determination in Europe, Global Ionospheric Map) data from a global perspective, we further verified the existence of TEC anomalies before the earthquake on the above TEC anomaly days. Finally, the influence of the equatorial ionospheric anomaly (EIA) on the TEC anomaly disturbance was excluded. The results show that the ionospheric TEC anomalies on January 20, January 27, February 4, and February 5 before the Türkiye earthquake may be correlated with the earthquake. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Recent research in intelligent transportation system focus on different possible use cases. Among them are the payment applications with cooperative intelligent transport system (C-ITS) equipment. In this paper, we deal about the tolling application performed with the C-ITS equipment. These latter use the ITS-G5 technology, the Roadside Unit (RSU) and the on-board unit (OBU) with features specified by the standardization Institute ETSI. To perform this service, we highlight two mains requirements: how to have a reliable geolocation of the vehicle when it crosses the tollgate and how to secure the communication during the transaction process. In this paper, we will address the methods that is propose to solve the issue of geolocation. The proposed method takes advantage of the communications data. It uses the principle of Differential - GPS mixed with Kalman filtering and extended Kalman filtering applied to the GPS and CAN bus measurements received by the RSU from the connected vehicles. The kinematic of the vehicle is taken into account to choose the suitable system model. Here as novelties, we discuss about the whole procedure to perform the geolocation process during the tolling service and we have results when we apply the dynamic model according to the real behavior of the vehicle when approaching and crossing the toll station. The release of low-cost dual-frequency (DF) global navigation satellite system (GNSS) modules provides an opportunity for low-cost precise positioning to support autonomous vehicle applications. The new GNSS modules support the US global positioning system (GPS) L1C/L2C or L5 civilian signals, the Russian GNSS Globalnaya Navigazionnaya Sputnikovaya Sistema (GLONASS) L1/L2, Europe's GNSS Galileo E1/E5b, and Chinese GNSS BeiDou B1/B2 signals. The availability of the DF measurements allows for removal of the ionospheric delay, enhancing the obtained positioning accuracy. Unfortunately, however, the L2C signals are only transmitted by modernized GPS satellites. This means that fewer GPS DF measurements are available. This, in turn, might affect the accuracy and the convergence of the GPS-only precise point positioning (PPP) solution. Multi-constellation GNSS PPP has the potential to improve the positioning accuracy and solution convergence due to the high redundancy of GNSS measurements. This paper aims to assess the performance of real-time quad-constellation GNSS PPP using the low-cost u-blox Z9D-F9P module. The assessment is carried out for both open-sky and challenging environment scenarios. Static, simulated-kinematic, and actual field-kinematic trials have been carried out to evaluate real-time PPP performance. Pre-saved real-time precise orbit and clock products from the Centre National d'Etudes Spatiales are used to simulate the real-time scenario. It is shown that the quad-constellation GNSS PPP using the low-cost u-blox Z9D-F9P module achieves decimeter-level positioning accuracy in both the static and simulated-kinematic modes. In addition, the PPP solution convergence is improved compared to the dual- and triple-constellation GNSS PPP counterparts. For the actual kinematic trial, decimeter-level horizontal positioning accuracy is achieved through the GPS + GLONASS + Galileo PPP compared with submeter-level positioning accuracy for the GPS + GLONASS and GPS + Galileo PPP counterparts. Additionally, submeter-level vertical positioning accuracy is achieved through the GPS + GLONASS + Galileo PPP compared with meter-level positioning accuracy for GPS + GLONASS and GPS + Galileo PPP counterparts. The paper presents an assessment of the accuracy and precision of point positioning using a currently available online service for automatic post-processing (APPS) of GNSS observations made by the Polish Active Geodetic Network—European Position Determination System (ASG-EUPOS). The ASG-EUPOS network is part of the national EUPOS project and was selected for the study because of its substantial spatial reach in Europe. A modification to the current APPS algorithm is proposed to limit the number of baseline vectors used in positioning and change the method for adjusting post-processing results. Currently, the APPS of the ASG-EUPOS determines point coordinates based on the method for adjusting direct and equally accurate observations with the least-squares method (equally accurate method, EAM). The modification proposes to determine the coordinates based on post-processing results adjustment using the unequally accurate observations method (unequally accurate method, UAM). Our analysis diagnoses the uncertainty of the ASG-EUPOS's APPS, and the modification optimises the adjustment. The proposed modification facilitates a much lower standard deviation of positioning in relation to reference positions. It is demonstrated that, if modified, the ASG-EUPOS service can provide automatic post-processing for 1 h GPS observations with a 1 s interval at 0.03 m accuracy for 99% of cases. Until now, RTK (real-time kinematic) and NRTK (Network-based RTK) have been the most popular cm-level accurate positioning approaches based on Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) signals in real-time. The tropospheric delay is a major source of RTK errors, especially for medium and long baselines. This source of error is difficult to quantify due to its reliance on highly variable atmospheric humidity. In this paper, we use the NRTK approach to estimate double-differenced zenith tropospheric delays alongside ambiguities and positions based on a complete set of multi-GNSS data in a sample 6-station network in Europe. The ZTD files published by IGS were used to validate the estimated ZTDs. The results confirmed a good agreement, with an average Root Mean Squares Error (RMSE) of about 12 mm. Although multiplying the unknowns makes the mathematical model less reliable in correctly fixing integer ambiguities, adding a priori interpolated ZTD as quasi-observations can improve positioning accuracy and Integer Ambiguity Resolution (IAR) performance. In this work, weighted least-squares (WLS) were performed using the interpolation of ZTD values of near reference stations of the IGS network. When using a well-known Kriging interpolation, the weights depend on the semivariogram, and a higher network density is required to obtain the correct covariance function. Hence, we used a simple interpolation strategy, which minimized the impact of altitude variability within the network. Compared to standard RTK where ZTD is assumed to be unknown, this technique improves the positioning accuracy by about 50%. It also increased the success rate for IAR by nearly 1. This paper investigates the potential vertical guidance performance of global positioning system (GPS)/wide area augmentation system (WAAS) user avionics sensor when the modernized GPS and Galileo are available. This paper will first investigate the airborne receiver code noise and multipath (CNMP) confidence (σair). The σair will be the dominant factor in the availability analysis of an L1-L5 dual-frequency GPS/WAAS user avionics sensor. This paper uses the MATLAB Algorithm Availability Simulation Tool (MAAST) to determine the required values for the σair, so that an L1-L5 dual-frequency GPS/WAAS user avionics sensor can meet the vertical guidance requirements of APproach with Vertical guidance (APV) II and CATegory (CAT) I over conterminous United States (CONUS). A modified MAAST that includes the Galileo satellite constellation is used to determine under what user configurations WAAS could be an APV II system or a CAT I system over CONUS. Furthermore, this paper examines the combinations of possible improvements in signal models and the addition of Galileo to determine if GPS/WAAS user avionics sensor could achieve 10 m Vertical Alert Limit (VAL) within the service volume. Finally, this paper presents the future vertical guidance performance of GPS user avionics sensor for the United States' WAAS, Japanese MTSAT-based satellite augmentation system (MSAS) and European geostationary navigation overlay service (EGNOS). This paper presents an innovative global navigation satellite system (GNSS) fault detection and exclusion approach for the adoption of satellite localization in the rail sector. Current global integrity monitoring systems cannot guarantee the safety level needed for such applications as train control where tolerable hazard rate in the order of 10−9/h is required. A new method, named two tiers, enabling to integrate local augmentation systems and global augmentation infrastructures, is presented. It is based on the comparison of single differences residuals among satellites for detecting signal in space (SIS) faults and double difference residuals among local augmentation stations and satellite-based augmentation systems ranging and integrity monitoring stations for detecting reference stations faults. GPS SIS faults described in literature and real GNSS raw data recorded on a train are taken into account. This study reports the performance analysis for the two-tiers approach carried out during relevant European projects. A test-bed architecture has been developed through the implementation of the algorithm in real time on a local augmentation operational center. Relevant performances have been tested on a rail track for validating the algorithm in real operative conditions. Significant results of the analysis are reported for SIS integrity assessment only. Due to the low to moderate seismicity of the European Western Alps, few focal mechanisms are available in this region to this day, and the corresponding current seismic stress and strain fields remain partly elusive. The development of dense seismic networks in past decades now provides a substantial number of seismic records in the 0–5 magnitude range. The corresponding data, while challenging to handle due to their amount and relative noise, represent a new opportunity to increase the spatial resolution of seismic deformation fields. The aim of this paper is to quantitatively assess the current seismic stress and strain fields within the Western Alps, from a probabilistic standpoint, using new seismotectonic data. The dataset comprises more than 30 000 earthquakes recorded by dense seismic networks between 1989 and 2013 and more than 2200 newly computed focal mechanisms in a consistent manner. The global distribution of P and T axis plunges confirms a majority of transcurrent focal mechanisms in the entire western Alpine realm, combined with pure extension localized in the core of the belt. We inverted this new set of focal mechanisms through several strategies, including a seismotectonic zoning scheme and grid procedure, revealing extensional axes oriented obliquely to the strike of the belt. The Bayesian inversion of this new dataset of focal mechanisms provides a probabilistic continuous map of the style of seismic deformation in the Western Alps. Extension is found to be clustered, instead of continuous, along the backbone of the belt. Robust indications for compression are only observed at the boundary between the Adriatic and Eurasian plates. Short-wavelength spatial variations of the seismic deformation are consistent with surface horizontal Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) measurements, as well as with deep lithospheric structures, thereby providing new elements with which to understand the current 3D dynamics of the belt. We interpret the ongoing seismotectonic and kinematic regimes as being controlled by the joint effects of far-field forces – imposed by the anticlockwise rotation of Adria with respect to Europe – and buoyancy forces in the core of the belt, which together explain the short-wavelength patches of extension and marginal compression overprinted on an overall transcurrent tectonic regime. Multi-constellation GNSS precise point positioning (PPP) typically uses the extended Kalman filter (EKF) for kinematic applications. Unfortunately, the obtained positioning accuracy in this approach is prone to errors caused by measurement outliers and the system's dynamic model. An adaptive robust Kalman filter (RKF) was recently developed to mitigate these errors. However, RKF uses empirical values as detection thresholds for the outliers, which requires the measurements to be from the same constellation and of equal precision to obtain an optimal PPP solution. The classification robust adaptive Kalman filter (CAKF) has subsequently been developed to deal with measurements of different precisions, namely pseudorange and carrier-phase measurements. This paper proposes a real-time GPS/Galileo PPP system, which employs a modified version of CAKF called the Improved Robust adaptive Kalman Filter (IRKF). The positioning performance of GPS/Galileo PPP through the IRKF is initially verified in comparison with those obtained through the EKF, RKF, and CAKF using the Centre for Orbit Determination in Europe (CODE) final orbit and clock products in both of static and kinematic modes. The real-time GPS/Galileo PPP solution through the IRKF is then assessed in comparison with its near-real-time counterpart. The results indicate that when the IRKF approach is utilised, the positioning accuracy is significantly improved and the convergence behaviour is enhanced compared with results from EKF, conventional RKF, and CAKF. In the real-time mode, centimeter-level horizontal positioning accuracy is achieved under an open sky environment, while decimeter-level horizontal positioning accuracy is achieved under a challenging environment. On the other hand, decimeter-level accuracy is achieved for the vertical positioning component under all environmental scenarios. The ionospheric error affects the accuracy of the Global Navigation Satellite Systems observation and precise orbit determination. Usually, only the first order ionospheric error is considered, which can be eliminated by the ionospheric-free linear combination observation. But the remaining higher order ionospheric error will affect the accuracy of observations and their applications. In this paper, the influence of the higher order ionospheric error have been studied by using the International Geomagnetic Reference Field 13 and the Global Ionosphere Maps model produced by the Center for Orbit Determination in Europe. Focus on ionospheric error, the experiment of paper at doy 302 in 2019, which show that the second order ionospheric error impacting BeiDou Navigation Satellite System (BDS) B1I and B3I observation is 6.3569 mm and 11.8484 mm, respectively. Whereas, the third order ionospheric error impacting BDS B1I and B3I observation is 0.1734 mm and 0.3977 mm, respectively. Due to the current measurement accuracy of BDS carrier-phase observation can reach 2 mm, the influence of high order ionospheric error on observation should be considered. For BDS precise orbit determination, the orbit overlapping results are indicated that its orbit accuracy can be improved approximately 5 mm with the higher order ionospheric error correction, which is also in agreement with the results of Satellite Laser Ranging in this work. This paper proposes a model suitable for predicting the ionosphere delay at different locations of receiver stations using a temporal 1D convolutional neural network (CNN) model. CNN model can optimally addresses non-linearity and model complex data through the creation of powerful representations at hierarchical levels of abstraction. To be able to predict ionosphere values for each visible satellite at a given station, sequence-to-sequence (seq2seq) models are introduced. These models are commonly used for solving sequential problems. In seq2seq models, a sequential input is entered to the model and the output has also a sequential form. Adopting this structure help us to predict ionosphere values for all satellites in view at every epoch. As experimental data, we used global navigation satellite system (GNSS) observations from selected sites in central Europe, of the global international GNSS network (IGS). The data used are part of the multi GNSS experiment (MGEX) project, that provides observations from multiple navigation satellite systems. After processing with precise point positioning (PPP) technique as implemented with GAMP software, the slant total electron content data (STEC) were obtained. The proposed CNN uses as input the ionosphere pierce points (IPP) points coordinates per visible satellite. Precision agricultural technologies (PA) such as global positioning system tools have been commercially available since the early 1990s and they are widely thought to have environmental and economic benefit; however, adoption studies show uneven adoption among farmers in the U.S. and Europe. This study aims to tackle a lingering puzzle regarding why some farmers adopt precision agriculture as an approach to food production and why others do not. The specific objective of this study is to examine the social and biophysical determinants of farmers' adoption of PA. This paper fills a research gap by including measurements of farmer identity—specifically their own conceptions of their role in the food system—as well as their perceptions of biophysical risks as these relate to the adoption of PA among a large sample of Midwestern U.S. farmers. The study has identified that farmer identity and perceptions of environmental risk do indeed influence PA adoption and that these considerations ought to be incorporated into further studies of PA adoption in other jurisdictions. The findings also appear to highlight the social force of policy and industry efforts to frame PA as not only good for productivity and efficiency but also as an ecologically beneficial technology. From Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) signals, accurate and high-frequency atmospheric parameters can be determined in all-weather conditions. GNSS tomography is a technique that takes advantage of these parameters, especially of slant troposphere observations between GNSS receivers and satellites, traces these signals through a 3-D grid of voxels, and estimates by an inversion process the refractivity of the water vapour content within each voxel. In the last years, the GNSS tomography development focused on numerical methods to stabilize the solution, which has been achieved to a great extent. Currently, we are facing new challenges and possibilities in the application of GNSS tomography in numerical weather forecasting, the main research objective of this paper. In the first instance, refractivity fields were estimated using two different GNSS tomography models (TUW, WUELS), which cover the area of central Europe during the period of 29 May–14 June 2013, when heavy-precipitation events were observed. For both models, slant wet delays (SWDs) were calculated based on estimates of zenith total delay (ZTD) and horizontal gradients, provided for 88 GNSS sites by Geodetic Observatory Pecny (GOP). In total, three sets of SWD observations were tested (set0 without compensation for hydrostatic anisotropic effects, set1 with compensation of this effect, set2 cleaned by wet delays outside the inner voxel model), in order to assess the impact of different factors on the tomographic solution. The GNSS tomography outputs have been assimilated into the nested (12 and 36 km horizontal resolution) Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model, using its three-dimensional variational data assimilation (WRFDA 3D-Var) system, in particular, its radio occultation observation operator (GPSREF). As only total refractivity is assimilated in GPSREF, it was calculated as the sum of the hydrostatic part derived from the ALADIN-CZ model and the wet part from the GNSS tomography. We compared the results of the GNSS tomography data assimilation to the radiosonde (RS) observations. The validation shows the improvement in the weather forecasting of relative humidity (bias, standard deviation) and temperature (standard deviation) during heavy-precipitation events. Established methods to record tourist activities in urban centres cannot produce quantitative data with precise spatial references. Analysing geographically positioned photography retrieved from image hosting web services combines the accuracy levels of GPS tracking and the quantitative advantages of the large accessible data-sets of internet communities. In this paper the correlation of data-sets obtained from Flickr.com with statistical data, morphological constrains and the attributes of attractions are tested. Correlation between registered bed nights and geotagged tourist photography numbers was calculated analysing 16 European cities. Three tourist-historic cities with similar tourist markets were compared more deeply. The spatial patterns of tourist activity in Vienna, Prague and Budapest showed many similarities and some relevant differences rooted in the morphological constraints and the different level of local and tourist activities at specific sites. The time series of GNSS coordinates contain signals caused by the age-related movement of tectonic plates, the deformation of the Earth's surface, as well as errors at different time scales from sub-daily tidal deformation to the long-term deformation of the surface load. Depending on the nature of the signal, specific approaches are used for both the visual interpretation and pre-processing of time series and their statistical analysis. However, none of the present software analyzes the nature of the residual errors but assumes their random nature and obedience to the classical normal distribution. One of the methods for analyzing the time series of coordinates with residual, unaccounted-for systematic errors is the non-classical error theory of measurements. The result of this work is a developed software solution for analyzing the time series of GNSS coordinates to test their normality, or in other words, to test whether a particular GNSS station is subject to the influence of small, unaccounted-for errors. Conclusions: After testing our software on four reference stations in Europe, we concluded that none of the chosen stations followed the normal law of distribution; thus, it is vital to perform such tests before conducting any experiments on the time series from reference stations. The signal-in-space range error (SISRE) has a direct impact on the performance of global navigation satellite systems (GNSSs). It is an important indicator of navigation satellite space server performance. The new B-CNAV navigation messages (B-CNAV1 and B-CNAV2) are broadcast on the satellites of the Beidou Global Navigation Satellite System (BDS-3), and they are different from D1 navigation messages in satellite orbit parameters. The orbit accuracy of B-CNAV navigation messages lacks analyses and comparisons with D1. The accuracy and stability of the new hydrogen and rubidium clocks on BDS-3 satellites need annual analyses of long time series, which will affect the service quality of this system. Based on precise ephemeris products from the Center for Orbit Determination in Europe (COD), the orbit error, clock error, and SISRE of 24 medium Earth orbit (MEO) satellite D1 and B-CNAV navigation messages of BDS-3 were computed, analyzed, and compared. Their annual evolution processes for the entire year of 2022 were studied. Thanks to the use of inter-satellite links (ISLs) adopted by BDS-3 MEO satellites, the ages of the ephemeris are accurate and the percent of ages of data, ephemerides (AODEs), and ages of data and clocks (AODCs) shorter than 12 h were 99.95% and 99.96%, respectively. In addition, the broadcast orbit performance was also improved by ISLs. The root mean square (RMS) values of the BDS-3 MEO broadcast ephemeris orbit error were 0.067 m, 0.273 m, and 0.297 m in the radial, cross, and along directions, respectively. Moreover, the 3D RMS value was 0.450 m. Thanks to the use of new orbit parameters in the B-CNAV navigation messages of BDS-3 MEO, its satellite orbit accuracy was obviously better than that of D1 in the radial direction. Its improved accuracy can reach up to about 1.2 cm, and the percentage of its accuracy improvement was about 19.06%. With respect to clock errors, the timescale differences between the two clock products were eliminated to assess the accuracy of broadcasting ephemeris clock errors. A standard deviation value of 0.256 m shows good performances as a result of the use of the two new types of atomic clocks, although the RMS value was 0.541 m due to a nonzero mean bias. Overall, the accuracy of atomic clocks was good. For the new hydrogen and rubidium atomic clocks, their RMS and standard deviation were 0.563 m and 0.231 m and 0.519 m and 0.281 m, respectively. The stability of the former was better than that of the latter. However, due to the nonzero mean bias the latter was better than the former in accuracy. The RMS value of the SISRE of BDS-3 MEO's broadcast ephemeris was 0.556 m, and the value was 0.920 m when it had a 95% confidence level. In contrast, after deducting the influence of the clock error, the value of SISRE_ORB was 0.092 m. Since the satellite clock error was substantially larger than the orbit radial error, the SISRE was mainly affected by the clock error, and their annual evolutions were consistent. Because of the improvement to the B-CNAV's navigation message with respect to orbit radial accuracy, SISRE_ORB has improved in accuracy. Today, GPS (Global Positioning System) devices are no longer an emerging technology, but are rather much like the transistor radio and the electronic calculator were in the 1970s in terms of popularity. GPS devices have been used, and are being used, for all sorts of serious and leisure applications, including in-car navigation systems. This paper examines 'how GPS and related geo-enabled technologies are helping, or can potentially help, older people and persons with disabilities live more independently'. The paper uses a number of examples, some of which are projects funded by the European Commission that the authors have recently been directly involved in (namely CAALYX and ASK-IT), to answer the above question from a practical implementation viewpoint. Remotely collected clinical data during times of medical emergencies and accidents can become useless without knowing the exact address of the distressed person to be able to dispatch timely and appropriate help to him/her where he/she happens to be. Moreover, the person might be unconscious or disoriented, requiring a fully autonomous system to raise the alert and relay his/her geographic location. Geo-enabled technologies and services can also contribute significantly to converting complex urban areas that are inaccessible by persons with disability to more accessible and friendly environments for older people and those with special needs. Issues such as geo-positioning problems (technology limitations), individual location privacy, and usability and user acceptance of the technology are briefly discussed, as well as some emerging trends and future directions in the field. From the raw measurements at a single Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) ground-based station, the Zenith Total Delay (ZTD) and the tropospheric gradient can be estimated. In order to assimilate such data into Numerical Weather Prediction (NWP) models, the observation operator must be developed. Our previously developed tropospheric gradient operator is based on a linear combination of tropospheric delays and, therefore, is difficult to implement into NWP Data Assimilation (DA) systems. In this technical note, we develop a fast observation operator. This observation operator is based on an integral expression which contains the north–south and east–west horizontal gradients of refractivity. We run a numerical weather model (the horizontal resolution is 10 km) and show that for stations located in central Europe and in the warm season, the root-mean-square deviation between the tropospheric gradients calculated by the fast and original approach is about 0.15 mm. This deviation is regarded acceptable for assimilation since the typical root-mean-square deviation between observed and forward modelled tropospheric gradients is about 0.5 mm. We then implement the developed operator in our experimental DA system and test the proposed approach. In particular, we analyze the impact of the assimilation on the refractivity field. Observations from permanent GNSS stations are actively used for the research and monitoring of geodynamic processes. Today, with the use of modern scientific programs and IGS products, it is possible to determine GNSS station coordinates and velocities at the level of a few millimeters. However, the scientific community constantly faces the question of increasing the accuracy of coordinate definitions to obtain more reliable data in the study of geodynamic phenomena. One of the main sources of errors is systematic measurement errors. To date, the procedure for their removal is still incomplete and imperfect. Also, during the processing of long-term GNSS measurements, it was found that the coordinate time series, after the removal of trend effects, are also characterized by seasonal variations, mainly of annual and semi-annual periods. We estimated the daily coordinate time series of 10 permanent GNSS stations in the central-eastern part of Europe from 2001 to 2019 and calculated the seasonal variation coefficients for these stations. The average value of the coefficients for the annual cycle for the N, E, and H components is −0.7, −0.2, and −0.7 mm, and for the semi-annual cycle the average value is 0.3, 0.4, and −0.5 mm. The obtained coefficients are less than 1 mm, which is why it can be argued that there is no seasonal component in the coordinate time series or that it is so small that it is a problematic task to calculate it. This practical absence of a seasonal component in long-term time series of GNSS coordinates, in our opinion, is partly compensated by the use of modern models of mapping functions (such as VMF3) for zenith tropospheric delays instead of the empirical GMF. To test the obtained results, we calculated the coefficients of seasonal variations for the sub-network of GNSS stations included in the category of the best EPN stations—C0 and C1. The values of the coefficients for the stations of this network are also less than 1 mm, which confirms the previous statement about the absence of a seasonal component in the long-term time series of coordinates. We also checked the presence of seasonal changes in the time series using the well-known decomposition procedure, which showed that the seasonal component is not observed because the content does not exceed 10% for additive decomposition and 20% for multiplicative decomposition. The knowledge of the transportation mode used by humans (e.g. bicycle, on foot, car and train) is critical for travel behaviour research, transport planning and traffic management. Nowadays, new technologies such as the Global Positioning System have replaced traditional survey methods (paper diaries, telephone) because they are more accurate and problems such as under reporting are avoided. However, although the movement data collected (timestamped positions in digital form) have generally high accuracy, they do not contain the transportation mode. We present in this article a new method for segmenting movement data into single-mode segments and for classifying them according to the transportation mode used. Our fully automatic method differs from previous attempts for five reasons: (1) it relies on fuzzy concepts found in expert systems, that is membership functions and certainty factors; (2) it uses OpenStreetMap data to help the segmentation and classification process; (3) we can distinguish between 10 transportation modes (including between tram, bus and car) and propose a hierarchy; (4) it handles data with signal shortages and noise, and other real-life situations; (5) in our implementation, there is a separation between the reasoning and the knowledge, so that users can easily modify the parameters used and add new transportation modes. We have implemented the method and tested it with a 17-million point data set collected in the Netherlands and elsewhere in Europe. The accuracy of the classification with the developed prototype, determined with the comparison of the classified results with the reference data derived from manual classification, is 91.6%. This paper describes the development of a decision support system (DSS) for prevention planning and emergency management of forest fire events that incorporates weather data management, a geographical data viewer, a priori danger forecasting and fire propagation modeling, automatic fire detection, and optimal resource dispatching. Collection, input, storage, management, and analysis of the information rely on advanced and automated methodologies using remote sensing, GPS, digital mapping, and geographic information systems. The results included short-term dynamic fire danger indices developed for improved and realistic prevention and pre-suppression planning. An automatic fire detection technology based on infrared video was developed and successfully tested on site. Several models for understanding fire propagation on forest fires have been proposed for practical application. Additionally, a DSS was developed with the innovation of covering wildland fire hazard management entirely, providing a complete coverage of technical and administrative activities that support decision makers in real time. From Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) signals, accurate and high-frequency atmospheric parameters can be determined in all-weather conditions. GNSS tomography is a novel technique that takes advantage of these parameters, especially of slant troposphere observations between GNSS receivers and satellites, traces these signals through a 3D grid of voxels and estimates by an inversion process the refractivity of the water vapour content within each voxel. In the last years, the GNSS tomography development focused on numerical methods to stabilize the solution, which has been achieved to a great extent. Currently, we are facing new challenges and possibilities in the application of GNSS tomography in numerical weather forecasting - the main research objective of this paper. In the first instance, refractivity fields were estimated using two different GNSS tomography models (TUW, WUELS), which cover the area of Central Europe during the period of 29 May-14 June 2013, when heavy precipitation events were observed. For both models, Slant Wet Delays (SWD) were calculated based on estimates of Zenith Total Delay (ZTD) and horizontal gradients, provided for 72 GNSS sites by Geodetic Observatory Pecny (GOP). In total, three sets of SWD observations were tested (set0 without compensation for hydrostatic anisotropic effects, set1 with compensation of this effect, set2 cleaned by wet delays outside the inner voxel model). The GNSS tomography outputs have been assimilated into the nested (12- and 36-km horizontal resolution) Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model, using its three-dimensional variational data assimilation (WRFDA 3DVar) system, in particular its radio occultation observations operator (GPSREF). As only total refractivity is assimilated in GPSREF, it was calculated as the sum of the hydrostatic part derived from the ALADIN-CZ model and the wet part from the GNSS tomography. We compared the results of the GNSS tomography data assimilation to the radiosonde (RS) observations. The validation shows the improvement in the weather forecasting of relative humidity (bias, standard deviation) and temperature (standard deviation) during heavy precipitation events. Abstract: In Europe, approximately 60% of road accident fatalities occur on two-lane rural roads. Thus, research to develop and enhance explanatory and predictive models for this road type continues to be of interest in mitigating these accidents. To this end, this paper describes a novel and extensive data collection and modeling effort to define accident models for two-lane road sections based on a unique combination of exposure, geometry, consistency and context variables directly related to the safety performance. The first part of the paper documents how these were identified for the segmentation of highways into homogeneous sections. Next, is a description of the extensive data collection effort that utilized differential cinematic GPS surveys to define the horizontal alignment variables, and road safety inspections (RSIs) to quantify the other road characteristics related to safety. The final part of the paper focuses on the calibration of models for estimating the expected number of accidents on homogeneous sections that can be characterized by constant values of the explanatory variables. Several candidate models were considered for calibration using the Generalized Linear Modeling (GLM) approach. After considering the statistical significance of the parameters related to exposure, geometry, consistency and context factors, and goodness of fit statistics, 19 models were ranked and three were selected as the recommended models. The first of the three is a base model, with length and traffic as the only predictor variables; since these variables are the only ones likely to be available network-wide, this base model can be used in an empirical Bayesian calculation to conduct network screening for ranking “sites with promise” of safety improvement. The other two models represent the best statistical fits with different combinations of significant variables related to exposure, geometry, consistency and context factors. These multiple variable models can be used, with caution, and in conjunction with results from other studies, to derive accident modification factors for these variables for design applications, and in safety assessment for smaller samples of sites for which these variables can be assembled with relative ease. The troposphere affects electromagnetic signal propagation causing signal path bending and the alteration of the electromagnetic wave velocity. Tropospheric delay can introduce a considerable error in satellite positioning if it is not properly estimated. The GPS signal delay can vary from 2 to 20 m depending on the elevation angles between the receiver and the satellite. Two basic types of delay prediction models exist. The first use surface meteorological parameters to estimate the value of the tropospheric delay, and the other models that do not require real-time meteorological input use average and seasonal variation data related to the receiver's latitude and day-of-year. This paper compares the performance of both types of model over a period of one year, comprising all seasons, to verify their accuracy over a longer period. The Saastamoinen model, known as one of the best performing prediction models, was taken as a reference and the global EGNOS model was used to check how the global estimates of the yearly averages of the meteorological parameters and their related seasonal variations comply with the real-time surface parameters. Abstract  DGPS services are provided in support of land and marine applications by many government agencies worldwide. Horizontal positioning accuracies in the order of several metres are typically achieved for these systems. Under high levels of ionospheric activity, however, significant degradations in DGPS positioning accuracies can occur. In particular, gradients of up to 50 ppm are associated with a feature known as storm-enhanced density (SED). This feature is a localized enhancement of total electron content (TEC) extending north through the mid-latitudes into the polar region. DGPS positioning errors of 20 m or more can persist for hours during such events. In this paper, archived IGS data from GPS reference stations are used to derive high-resolution TEC maps for two SED events. The impact of SED effects on DGPS horizontal positioning accuracies is then quantified using data from select IGS reference stations in North America and Europe. This paper presents the electromagnetic interference effects on the performance of locomotive onboard global positioning system (GPS) receivers due to the railway environment. The evaluation of the maximum tolerated interferences around a train is presented by taking into account European Committee for Electrotechnical Standardization and the International Electrotechnical Commission normative, Mobile Radio for Railway Networks in Europe, and experimental results. These interference levels are used to study the performance of a hardware GPS receiver operating at different modes and considering the possible levels of GPS signal L1 at the earth surface. From the obtained results, it is possible to conclude the reliability of a low-cost GPS receiver for train positioning even if the train equipment has been designed at the threshold of the current normative. Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS), such as GPS or Galileo, have become indispensable in various sectors, including road traffic, aviation, and emergency response services. With recent technological advancements, GNSS have been incorporated as a fundamental constituent of artificial intelligence (AI) systems. Self-driving vehicles, autonomous aircraft, and drones rely increasingly on GNSS, as these technologies are currently the sole source of globally consistent, precise positioning and timing. However, GNSS are not entirely risk-free as satellite signals can be susceptible to interference and other technical malfunctions may cause disruptive impacts on the proper functioning of AI systems. In such context, this article aims to explore the legal foundations for ascribing liability in case accidents are caused by AI systems due to a GNSS malfunctions, in the light of the recent European regulatory initiatives, namely the AI Act, the AI Liability Directive and the revised Product Liability Directive. The present-day sea-level variations and vertical movements in the northern Adriatic Sea and in the highly vulnerable Venetian Lagoon result from a number of simultaneously operating contributions. These include Glacial Isostatic Adjustment (GIA), the global, long-term process arising from interactions between the cryosphere, the solid Earth and the oceans in response to the melting of continental ice sheets. Although the GIA contribution in northern Adriatic Sea has been the subject of various investigations so far, significant uncertainties still exist, especially related to the extent and chronology of the Würm Alpine ice sheet and to the rheological profile of the mantle. Here, taking advantage of the recent publication of updated deglaciation chronologies for the far field late-Pleistocene ice sheets and for the near-field alpine ice complex, we produce up-to-date estimates of the present-day rates of GIA-induced relative sea-level variations and vertical displacements in the Venetian Lagoon and in the northern Adriatic Sea, which are compared with GNSS and tide-gauge observations. From high-resolution numerical simulations, we find that GIA is responsible for a complex pattern of geodetic signals across the Po plain and the northern Adriatic Sea. The modeled GIA rates are of the order of fractions of mm yr−1, generally small – but not negligible – compared to the signals observed at local tide gauges and at GNSS sites in the Po plain and facing the Venetian Lagoon. Our results indicate that, while GIA represents a relatively small component among those responsible for present-day land movements and relative sea-level variations in the northern Adriatic Sea, its contribution needs to be taken into account for a correct interpretation of the observed geodetic variations. The ground-based Global Positioning System (GPS) has been used extensively to retrieve integrated water vapour (IWV) and has been adopted as a unique tool for the assessments of atmospheric reanalyses. In this study, we investigated the multi-temporal-scale variabilities and trends of IWV over Europe by using IWV time series from 108 GPS stations for more than 2 decades (1994–2018). We then adopted the GPS IWV as a reference to assess six commonly used atmospheric reanalyses, namely the Climate Forecast System Reanalysis (CFSR); ERA5; ERA-Interim; the Japanese 55-year Reanalysis (JRA-55); the Modern-Era Retrospective Analysis for Research and Applications, version 2 (MERRA-2); and NCEP-DOE AMIP-II Reanalysis (NCEP-2). The GPS results show that the peaks of the diurnal harmonics are within 15:00–21:00 in local solar time at 90 % of the stations. The diurnal amplitudes are 0–1.2 kg m -2 (0 %–8 % of the daily mean IWV), and they are found to be related to seasons and locations with different mechanisms, such as solar heating, land–sea breeze, and orographic circulation. However, mismatches in the diurnal cycle of ERA5 IWV between 09:00 and 10:00 UTC as well as between 21:00 and 22:00 UTC were found and evaluated for the first time, and they can be attributed to the edge effect in each ERA5 assimilation cycle. The average ERA5 IWV shifts are -0.08 and 0.19 kg m -2 at the two epochs, and they were found to be more significant in summer and in the Alps and in Eastern and central Europe in some cases. Nevertheless, ERA5 outperforms the other reanalyses in reproducing diurnal IWV anomalies at all the 1-, 3-, and 6-hourly temporal resolutions. ERA5 is also superior to the others in modelling the annual cycle and linear trend of IWV. For instance, the IWV trend differences between ERA5 and GPS are quite small, with a mean value and a standard deviation of 0.01 % per decade and 0.97 % per decade, respectively. However, due to significant discrepancies with respect to GPS, CFSR and NCEP-2 are not recommended for the analysis of IWV trends over southern Europe and the whole of Europe, respectively. The differential code bias (DCB) of the Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) receiver should be precisely corrected when conducting ionospheric remote sensing and precise point positioning. The DCBs can usually be estimated by the ground GNSS network based on the parameterization of the global ionosphere together with the global ionospheric map (GIM). In order to reduce the spatial-temporal complexities, various algorithms based on GIM and local ionospheric modeling are conducted, but rely on station selection. In this paper, we present a recursive method to estimate the DCBs of Global Positioning System (GPS) satellites based on a recursive filter and independent reference station selection procedure. The satellite and receiver DCBs are estimated once per local day and aligned with the DCB product provided by the Center for Orbit Determination in Europe (CODE). From the statistical analysis with CODE DCB products, the results show that the accuracy of GPS satellite DCB estimates obtained by the recursive method can reach about 0.10 ns under solar quiet condition. The influence of stations with bad performances on DCB estimation can be reduced through the independent iterative reference selection. The accuracy of local ionospheric modeling based on recursive filter is less than 2 Total Electron Content Unit (TECU) in the monthly median sense. The performance of the recursive method is also evaluated under different solar conditions and the results show that the local ionospheric modeling is sensitive to solar conditions. For high‐resolution regional geodetic applications, the International Terrestrial Reference Frame (ITRF) is complemented by regional densifications. These are realized either as multi‐year solutions related to a tectonic plate (e.g., EUREF for Europe) or as epoch reference frames (ERFs) to capture nonlinear geophysical station motions caused by, for example, earthquakes or non‐tidal loading (e.g., SIRGAS for Latin America). These Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS)‐only based regional reference frames have in common that their geodetic datum is aligned with the ITRF datum at a specific epoch. The consequence is that their origin represents the Earth's center of figure and does not coincide with the instantaneous center of mass. Here, we present studies on a direct geocentric realization of regional ERFs. We propose to realize the geodetic datum for each epoch by combining global GNSS, Satellite Laser Ranging, and Very Long Baseline Interferometry networks via measured local ties at co‐located sites. A uniformly distributed global GNSS network is used to realize the orientation via a no‐net‐rotation constraint with respect to the ITRF and is densified by the stations of the regional subnetwork. The developed combination and filtering strategy aims to guarantee a stable datum realization for each epoch‐wise solution. Validating our results against global reference frames and geophysical loading models relating to the Earth's centers of mass and figure, we show that the realized displacement time series are geocentric and reflect seasonal geophysical processes. As the approach does not need to rely on co‐location sites in the region of interest, it is conceptually transferable to other regions on the globe. Plain Language Summary: In today's world, precise ground, sea, and air navigation and the accurate monitoring of geophysical processes are vital. Precise coordinate reference frames make it possible to relate observed displacements to the Earth system. For different regions, these reference frames are materialized by dense networks of Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) stations with precisely determined position coordinates. It is crucial that the origin (defined to coincide with the Earth's center of mass), the scale (the realized unit of length), and the orientation (with respect to the Earth's crust) of the reference frame match their conventional definition. The realization of this so‐called "geodetic datum" for current conventional reference frames suffers from several deficiencies. We have developed a strategy for the precise weekly geocentric realization of regional reference frames. Coping with the changing and inhomogeneous distribution of stations by observing different space‐geodetic techniques, we developed and implemented a strategy to improve the long‐term stability of the solutions. We show that this approach allows for monitoring geophysical processes (loading and earthquakes) at low latency and overcomes the problems of existing realizations. The developed strategy is based on global networks and its effectiveness is demonstrated in Latin America; however, it can be applied to any region of the Earth. The EUREF Permanent GNSS Network (EPN) provides the users with data and products such as station coordinate time series. These are subject to possible discontinuities and trend changes, being earthquake events one of the possible natural causes for these variations. We present here a fully automated tool for the analysis of the coordinate time series of EPN stations located in the desired neighbourhood of an earthquake epicentre. The tool is made freely available to the public and applied here to two significant earthquake events occurred in Europe in recent years, where several trend changes and jumps are revealed. Weighted average temperature (Tm) plays a crucial role in global navigation satellite system (GNSS) precipitable water vapor (PWV) retrieval. Aiming at the poor applicability of the existing Tm models in Europe, in the article, we used observations from 48 radiosonde stations over Europe from 2014 to 2020 to establish a weighted average temperature model in Europe (ETm) by the nonlinear least squares estimation method. The ETm model takes into account factors such as ground temperature, water vapor pressure, latitude, and their annual variation, semiannual variation and diurnal variation. Taking the Tm obtained from the radiosonde data by the integration method in 2021 as the reference value, the accuracy of the ETm model was evaluated and compared with the commonly used Bevis model, ETmPoly model, and GPT2w model. The results of the 48 modeled stations showed that the mean bias and root mean square (RMS) values of the ETm model were 0.06 and 2.85 K, respectively, which were 21.7%, 11.5%, and 31.8% higher than the Bevis, ETmPoly, and GPT2w-1 (1° × 1° resolution) models, respectively. In addition, the radiosonde data of 12 non-modeling stations over Europe in 2021 were selected to participate in the model accuracy validation. The mean bias and RMS values of the ETm model were –0.07 and 2.87 K, respectively. Compared with the Bevis, ETmPoly, and GPT2w-1 models, the accuracy (in terms of RMS values) increased by 20.5%, 10.6%, and 35.2%, respectively. Finally, to further verify the superiority of the ETm model, the ETm model, and other Tm models were applied to the GNSS PWV calculation. The ETm model had mean RMSPWV and RMSPWV/PWV values of 0.17 mm and 1.03%, respectively, which were less than other Tm models. High-frequency variability of the ionospheric Total Electron Content (TEC) can strongly affect precise positioning with GNSS. The occurrence rate as well as the amplitude of such disturbances has been extensively studied over the last decade. Mainly, one can distinguish disturbances due to space-weather events and the others, qualified as “quiet-time” as they are observed during quiet geomagnetic conditions. The latter, which represent more than 75% of the total number of disturbances over mid-latitudes, are then divided into two categories: the Winter Daytime (WD) and the Summer Nighttime (SN). The first category, representing the bulk of quiet-time disturbances, corresponds to classical Medium-Scale Traveling Ionospheric Disturbances (MSTIDs), that are the result of the interaction of gravity waves and the ionospheric plasma. On the other hand, SN disturbances are generally understood as non-classical MSTIDs of electrical origin. The paper investigates the origin of these two types of disturbance based on GPS measurements, ionospheric soundings and wind speed data at a tropospheric level. If one cannot exclude the solar terminator as a potential source of gravity waves responsible for WD events, it is thought that the major contribution comes from the lower atmosphere. More precisely, tropospheric jetstream is considered as the favorite candidate for daytime MSTIDs. Turning to SN disturbances, our analysis reveals that they are related to spread-F phenomenon, linked to the appearance of sporadic E-layers. The related instabilities are responsible for field-aligned irregularities in the F-region, which are thought to be responsible for noise-like fluctuations of the GPS TEC observed during SN events. On 12 February 2014, a major earthquake occurred near the Yutian County, China. In this paper, the ionospheric variations around the time of this earthquake were analysed on the basis of the global positioning system vertical total electron contents (VTEC) and computerised ionospheric tomography (CIT) electron density distributions. Three ionospheric anomalies on 2, 17 and 19 February were detected with the global VTEC data from Center for Orbit Determination in Europe before and after the earthquake. Based on the analysis of the geomagnetic indices, we think the anomalies on 17 and 19 February could be related to the geomagnetic disturbances. Through further investigations on the temporal and spatial characteristics of the anomaly on 2 February, we draw the conclusion that the pre-earthquake ionospheric anomaly is probably the seismo-ionospheric precursor of the Yutian earthquake. In addition, the CIT results of the anomaly on 2 February were used to study the vertical distribution of this anomaly. A novel integrated water vapor (IWV) product from TROPOspheric Monitoring Instrument (TROPOMI) is validated together with a Global Ozone Monitoring Instrument-2 (GOME-2) standard product. As reference, ground-based Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) IWV data in 235 European stations from May 2018 to May 2019 are used. Under cloud free situations, a general comparison is carried out. It suggests that TROPOMI IWV exhibits less bias than GOME-2 and better results in the dispersion and regression parameters. Moreover, TROPOMI presents more homogeneous results along the different stations. However, TROPOMI is found to be overestimating the IWV uncertainties and being, therefore, too conservative in the confidence interval considered. The dependence of satellite product performance on several variables is also discussed. TROPOMI IWV shows wet bias of 5.7% or less for IWV < 10 mm (TROPOMI) and dry bias of up to −3% (TROPOMI). In contrast, GOME-2 shows wet bias of 30% or less for IWV < 25 mm (GOME-2) and dry bias of −12.3% for IWV > 25 mm. In addition, relative standard deviation (rSD) increases as IWV increases. In addition, the dependence on solar zenith angle (SZA) was also analyzed, as solar radiation bands are used in the retrieval algorithm of both instruments. Relative mean bias error (rMBE) shows positive values for GOME-2, slightly increasing with SZA, while TROPOMI shows more stable values. However, under high SZA, GOME-2 IWV exhibits a steep increase in rMBE (overestimation), while TROPOMI IWV exhibits a moderate decrease (underestimation). rSD is slightly increasing with SZA. The influence of cloudiness on satellite IWV observations is such that TROPOMI tends to overestimate IWV more as cloudiness increases, especially for high IWV. In the case of GOME-2, the rSD slightly increases with cloudiness, but TROPOMI rSD has a marked increase with increasing cloudiness. Crustal deformation and seismicity in Europe are still poorly understood. Seismic activity is classically ascribed to crustal strain rates generated by edge‐driven tectonic forces. However, crustal deformation is not only due to tectonic loading, but can also be related to isostatic and mantellic processes that induce additional stress and strain on the crust by flexure. The influence that those processes have on seismic activity, as well their interaction, is still controversial. The main limitation to study it is because the deformation and its causal mechanisms are usually analyzed separately in small regions. We present here a 3D secular velocity field that covers Eurasia and its plate boundaries including 4,863 Global Navigation Satellite System stations obtained by combining 10 different datasets. We have developed a method based on spatial filtering to identify outliers and smooth the velocity field, and have computed both strain and uplift rate maps that are interpreted in the light of the different driving processes that contribute to the 3D deformation in Europe. The vertical and horizontal deformation features are compared with seismic rates obtained from the spatial and temporal distribution of the seismicity in Europe. Our results suggest that is not possible to explain the seismicity in Europe with edge‐driven horizontal tectonic forces only. In some areas markers of the crustal flexure such as the vertical velocity field and its derivative, resulting from buoyancy‐driven processes, may help to interpret earthquake distribution. Plain Language Summary: Earthquakes are often related to the deformation of Earth's crust. This deformation is mostly concentrated at the plates boundaries, where most of the earthquakes take place and where the horizontal component of tectonic deformation is stronger. This suggests that the spatial distribution of earthquakes and their frequencies are related to the horizontal deformation rates. However, there is large record of intracontinental earthquakes taking place in regions that do not present significant horizontal deformation, but where vertical deformation is important. This may indicate that vertical deformation, which is usually associated to the downwelling or upwelling of the mantle, can also affect the seismicity. In order to better understand how the crustal deformation processes are related to the earthquake distribution, we combine present‐day displacement measurements made in several regions of Europe to develop a 3D deformation model of the ground surface at continental scale, and we compare that model to the distribution and the occurrence rates of earthquakes. Plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) are commonly operated with high-voltage (HV) components due to their higher power availability compared to 48 V-systems. On the contrary, HV-powertrain components are more expensive and require additional safety measures. Additionally, the HV system can only be repaired and maintained with special equipment and protective gear, which is not available in all workshops. PHEVs based on a 48 V-system level can offer a reasonable compromise between the greenhouse gas (GHG) emission-saving potential and cost-effectiveness in small- and medium-sized electrified vehicles. In our study, the lifecycle emissions of the proposed 48 V PHEV system were compared to a conventional vehicle, 48 V HEV, and HV PHEV for individual driving use cases. To ensure a holistic evaluation, the analysis was based on measured real-driving cycles including Global Position System (GPS) map-matched slope profiles for a parallel hybrid. Optimal PHEV battery capacities were derived for the individual driving use cases. The analysis was based on lifecycle emissions for 2020 and 2030 in Europe. The impact analysis revealed that 48 V PHEVs can significantly reduce GHG emissions compared to vehicles with no charging opportunity for all use cases. Furthermore, the findings were verified for two vehicle segments and two energy mix scenarios. In the Global Navigation Satellite System, ionospheric delay is a significant source of error. The magnitude of the ionosphere total electron content (TEC) directly impacts the magnitude of the ionospheric delay. Correcting the ionospheric delay and improving the accuracy of satellite navigation positioning can both benefit from the accurate modeling and forecasting of ionospheric TEC. The majority of current ionospheric TEC forecasting research only considers the temporal or spatial dimensions, ignoring the ionospheric TEC's spatial and temporal autocorrelation. Therefore, we constructed a spatiotemporal network model with two modules: (i) global spatiotemporal characteristics extraction via forwarding spatiotemporal characteristics transfer and (ii) regional spatiotemporal characteristics correction via reverse spatiotemporal characteristics transfer. This model can realize the complementarity of TEC global spatiotemporal characteristics and regional spatiotemporal characteristics. It also ensures that the global spatiotemporal characteristics of the global ionospheric TEC are transferred to each other in both temporal and spatial domains at the same time. The spatiotemporal network model thus achieves a spatiotemporal prediction of global ionospheric TEC. The Huber loss function is also used to suppress the gross error and noise in the ionospheric TEC data to improve the forecasting accuracy of global ionospheric TEC. We compare the results of the spatiotemporal network model with the Center for Orbit Determination in Europe (CODE), the convolutional Long Short-Term Memory (convLSTM) model and the Predictive Recurrent Neural Network (PredRNN) model for one-day forecasts of global ionospheric TEC under different conditions of time and solar activity, respectively. With internal data validation, the average root mean square error (RMSE) of our proposed algorithm increased by 21.19, 15.75, and 9.67%, respectively, during the maximum solar activity period. During the minimum solar activity period, the RMSE improved by 38.69, 38.02, and 13.54%, respectively. This algorithm can effectively be applied to ionospheric delay error correction and can improve the accuracy of satellite navigation and positioning. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: Sea level changes are threatening the human living environments, particularly along the European Coasts with highly dense population. In this paper, coastal sea level changes in western and southern Europe are investigated for the period 1993–2011 using Global Positioning System (GPS), Tide Gauge (TG), Satellite Altimetry (SA), Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE) and geophysical models. The mean secular trend is 2.26±0.52mm/y from satellite altimetry, 2.43±0.61mm/y from TG+GPS and 1.99±0.67mm/y from GRACE mass plus steric components, which have a remarkably good agreement. For the seasonal variations, annual amplitudes of satellite altimetry and TG+GPS results are almost similar, while GRACE Mass+Steric results are a little smaller. The annual phases agree remarkably well for three independent techniques. The annual cycle is mainly driven by the steric contributions, while the annual phases of non-steric (mass component) sea level changes are almost a half year later than the steric sea level changes. Abstract: Simultaneous GPS observations from about 150 stations of European Permanent Network (EPN) have been used for studying dynamics of latitudinal profiles and structure of mid-latitude ionospheric trough (MIT). For the analyses, the TEC maps over Europe were created with high spatial and temporal resolution. The latitudinal profiles were produced from TEC maps with one-hour interval for geographic latitude range from 35N to 75N. The structure of latitudinal profiles relates to the occurrence of the ionospheric trough. The location of the trough depends on season, local time, and both geophysical and geomagnetic conditions. The trough structure in GPS-TEC demonstrates a smooth shape. The trough occurrence as a distinguished structure is more distinct during winter. The relation of TEC in the trough minimum to the equator and polar walls amounted to a factor of 2–4. The diurnal, seasonal as well as storm-time dynamics of the latitudinal profiles and the trough-like structure during different geomagnetic conditions are also presented. Day by day snapshots demonstrate great variability of TEC profiles and MIT, essential changes of the ionosphere structure took place during a storm. Similarly to the F2 region trough, the position of the TEC trough shifts towards lower latitudes during disturbances. In the storm-time, the TEC trough was recognized during day-time at latitudes lower than 70N. This paper presents the statistics describing the dynamics of the trough location. Abstract: Ionospheric disturbances are known to have adverse effects on the satellite-based communication and navigation. One particular type of ionospheric effects, observed during major geomagnetic storms and threatening the integrity performance of both ground-based and space-based GNSS augmentation systems, is the sharp increase/decrease in the ionospheric delay that propagates in horizontal direction, thus called for convenience ‘moving ionospheric wall’. This paper presents preliminary results from researching such anomalous ionospheric delay gradients at European middle latitudes during the storm events of 29 October 2003 and 20 November 2003. For the purpose, 30-s GPS data from the Belgian permanent network was used for calculating and analysing the slant ionospheric delay and total electron content values. It has been found that, during these two particular storm events, substantial gradients did occur in Europe although they were not so pronounced as in the American sector. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: A CGPS coordinate time series analysis strategy was evaluated to determine highly accurate vertical station velocity estimates with realistic uncertainties. This strategy uses a combination of techniques to (1) obtain the most accurate parameter estimates of the station motion model, (2) infer the stochastic properties of the time series in order to compute more realistic error bounds for all parameter estimates, and (3) improve the understanding of apparent common systematic variations in the CGPS coordinate time series, which are believed to be of geophysical and/or technical origin. The strategy provided a pre-processing of the coordinate time series in which outliers and discontinuities were identified. Subsequent parameterization included a mean value, a constant rate, periodic terms with annual and semi-annual frequencies, and offset magnitudes for identified discontinuities. All parameters plus the magnitudes of different stochastic noise were determined using maximum likelihood estimation (MLE). Empirical orthogonal function (EOF) analysis was used to study both the temporal and spatial variability of the common modes determined by this technique. After outlining the CGPS coordinate time series analysis strategy this paper shows initial results for coordinate time series for a four year (2000–2003) period from a selection of CGPS stations in Europe that are part of the European Sea Level Service (ESEAS) CGPS network. Background: The achievement of a satisfactory level of technical skills during ski training requires necessary fitness, talents and specific aptitudes on the part of the students. Also some external factors, such as certain basic features of a ski resort, are crucial for an efficient curricular training of the students. This paper aims at revealing differences regarding time and distance factors present during ski training at Polish and Austrian ski-sports locations. The presented results are related only to: effective and ineffective time of the training, distances covered and the achieved average and maximum velocity. Material and methods: The study was done using a GPS device which monitored the skier's active path, or his/her route, as well as statistical variables related to the latter. The data were then transferred to a computer for processing. Participants of the study included students of the Higher School of Physical Education and Tourism in Sopot and the Academy of Physical Education and Sport in Gdansk, during winter curricular camps. Three groups of beginners were examined in Karpacz and in Kaprun. The obtained results revealed considerable differences in training variables between both locations. As regards Kaprun, much greater distances were covered daily by skiers, the effective time of the training was longer and higher average/maximum velocities were achieved. The ski training provided in Kaprun, compared to that of Karpacz, is more efficient in terms of time use. Recently the concept of using dual-continuous GPS (dual-CGPS) stations for monitoring vertical land movements at tide gauge sites was proposed by a working group of the European Sea Level Observing System (EOSS). In this concept, one CGPS station is established at the tide gauge, in order to monitor the local vertical land movements, and a second CGPS station is established on stable rock, within a few kilometers of the tide gauge further inland. Since 1997, a network of CGPS stations has been established to monitor vertical land movements in the UK. For the dual-CGPS station concept, pairs formed by the CGPS stations at Newlyn tide gauge and Camborne and at Lowestoft tide gauge and Hemsby, have been analyzed over a time span of approximately 2.7 and 2.0 years respectively.It has been shown by numerous authors that temporal and spatial correlations in CGPS coordinate time series can introduce biases in the estimated station velocities and their uncertainties. By analyzing the coordinate time series of two CGPS stations close to each other, spatial correlations can be removed successfully by differencing and a cleaner, difference time series for each coordinate component can be obtained. In this paper, the observed coordinate time series of four CGPS stations have been used to produce synthetic coordinate time series of 6 years in length. Station velocities and their uncertainties have been derived for both observed and synthetic coordinate time series and compared in order to assess the capabilities of the dual-CGPS concept to better describe local and geophysical vertical land movements. Precise orbit determination (POD) plays an important and fundamental role in Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) applications. The Russian GLONASS is a mature full-constellation GNSS system that provides both L-band and satellite laser ranging (SLR) data. To explore the current individual GLONASS POD capability, we conduct the multi-day solution of the GLONASS L-band, SLR-only, and the combined L-band/SLR POD from 1 to 30 September, 2019. Seven strategies are investigated to explore the impact of the multi-day solution strategy on the GLONASS SLR-only POD. For the L-band POD, we find that the 3 d solution is always optimal without the influence of the eclipse. The overall average root mean square (rms) values are 3.7, 4.1 and 4.7 cm in the radial-tangential-normal (RTN) directions by comparison with the Center for Orbit Determination in Europe (CODE) orbits. The corresponding RTN rms values are 1.2, 4.3 and 3.4 cm for the orbital overlaps. For the SLR-only POD, the 9 d solution is the best with the orbital overlap RTN rms values of 0.7, 4 and 5.7 cm. Meanwhile, the RTN rms values are 1.6, 8 and 14 cm for the CODE orbits, which is obviously better than those of the L-band orbits in the R-direction. Due to the inaccuracy of the estimated dynamic parameters, the orbital consistency degrades with the increase of the multi-day solution arcs. Last but not least, a slight improvement in accuracy can be achieved in the combined L-band/SLR POD, especially in the R-direction of the 1 d solution. As a typical case, the external consistency is improved by 0.4–1.2, −0.3–1.7 and 0.1–1.5 cm in the RTN directions for the 3 d solution of the GLONASS R14 during the day of the year 256–265, 2019. The volcanism of the Eifel volcanic field (EVF), in west-central Germany, is often considered an example of hotspot volcanism given its geochemical signature and the putative mantle plume imaged underneath. EVF's setting in a stable continental area provides a rare natural laboratory to image surface deformation and test the hypothesis of there being a thermally buoyant plume. Here we use Global Positioning System (GPS) data to robustly image vertical land motion (VLM) and horizontal strain rates over most of intraplate Europe. We find a spatially coherent positive VLM anomaly over an area much larger than the EVF and with a maximum uplift of ∼1 mm yr−1 at the EVF (when corrected for glacial isostatic adjustment). This rate is considerably higher than averaged over the Late-Quaternary. Over the same area that uplifts, we find significant horizontal extension surrounded by a radial pattern of shortening, a superposition that strongly suggests a common dynamic cause. Besides the Eifel, no other area in NW Europe shows significant positive VLM coupled with extensional strain rates, except for the much broader region of glacial isostatic adjustment. We refer to this 3-D deformation anomaly as the Eifel Anomaly. We also find an extensional strain rate anomaly near the Massif Central volcanic field surrounded by radial shortening, but we do not detect a significant positive VLM signal there. The fact that the Eifel Anomaly is located above the Eifel plume suggests that the plume causes the anomaly. Indeed, we show that buoyancy forces induced by the plume at the bottom of the lithosphere can explain this remarkable surface deformation. Plume-induced deformation can also explain the relatively high rate of regional seismicity, particularly along the Lower Rhine Embayment. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
