Purpose: This paper aims to elaborate the library data migration process from LAMP (Library Automation Management Program) to the open source software Koha's (2.2.8 Windows based) Pakistani flavour PakLAG-Koha in six legislative assembly libraries of Pakistan. Design/methodology/approach: The paper explains different steps of the data migration from one ILM (integrated library management system) to a new ILM in six libraries over the course of three months. Qualitative research methods, i.e. direct observation and interviews, were adopted for finding the problems and solutions of the delayed project. Training and support was offered by a local volunteer group (PakLAG). One of the authors of the paper presented first-hand experience of being a consultant of this project. The study and results are the author's own reflections and first-hand experiences, and hence results are based on direct observations. Findings: The paper identifies several critical issues and their solutions concerning data migration within a local scenario as well as how local consultants and support groups are coping with these issues. It was noticed that the data migration can be done quickly if any support group is properly involved with the library staff. Originality/value: This paper provides first-hand experience and success story of library data migration from DOS-based ILM to open source software. Library and information science has been at an infant stage in Pakistan, primarily in resource management, description, discovery, and access. The reasons are many, including the lack of interest and use of modern tools, techniques, and best practices by librarians in Pakistan. Finding a solution to these challenges requires a comprehensive study that identifies the current state of libraries in Pakistan. This paper fills this gap in the literature by reviewing the relevant literature published between 2015 and 2021 and selected through a rigorous search and selection methodology. It also analyzes the websites of 82 libraries in Pakistan through a theoretical framework based on various aspects. The findings of this study include: Libraries in Pakistan need a transition from traditional and limited solutions to more advanced information and communication technology (ICT)-enabled, user-friendly, and state-of-the-art systems to produce dynamic, consumable, and sharable knowledge space. They must adopt social semantic cataloging to bring all the stakeholders on a single platform. A libraries consortium should be developed to link users to local, multilingual, and multicultural collections for improved knowledge production, recording, sharing, acquisition, and dissemination. These findings benefit Pakistani libraries, librarians, information science professionals, and researchers in other developing countries. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study of its kind providing insights into the current state of libraries in Pakistan through the study of their websites using a rigorous theoretical framework and in the light of the latest relevant literature. The aim of this paper is to explore the behavior of medical students regarding the use of Electronic books (E-books) and Print books (P-books). The objective of the study is to measure the differences with regards in using E-books and P-books to perceptions behavioral intentions among medical students. Quantitative approach and survey research method was used to conduct this study. The self-administered questionnaire valid by field expert was used to gather the data from sample. The population of this study is all medical college libraries affiliated with University of Health Sciences, Lahore. 25 questionnaires from each medical college to be filled by the students through random sampling technique .The data was analyzed in Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) 20th version. The paper found that medical students are satisfied with usage and accessibility of e-books but they preferred p-books. The paper examines the constraints that hamper growth of university libraries in Pakistan. The study is based on personal observations and experience of the author, a review of relevant literature on the subject, and discussion with several senior library administrators. Issues identified are as follows: inadequacy of library collections, absence of readers' services, absence of competent personnel in top managerial positions, inadequate physical facilities, inadequate finance, absence of cooperative programs, and limited application of computer technology. Recommendations, including the formation of a Standing Committee on University Libraries by the Higher Education Commission (HEC), are outlined.

Professor Dr. Kanwal Ameen is former chairperson of oldest library school of the Sub-Continent, University of the Punjab, Pakistan. She did Master and PhD in Library and Information Science from University of the Punjab. She also did diploma from Netherland, Pre-doc, Post-doc from USA and research fellowship from Japan. She is the most prolific female writer in Library and Information Science field in Pakistan. The aim and objectives of this study is bibliometric analysis of her research contribution. Data has been collected based upon her Curriculum Vitae available at the website of University of the Punjab. She produced 137 research items, includes 81 articles, 34 conference papers, 15 book chapters, 4 books and 3 book-reviews during 27 years of span from 1991 to December 2017. Bibliographic indicators of her research work like chronological distribution, authorship pattern, and channel of communication with geographical affiliation had been assessed. Purpose – The paper analyses the use of library and information science (LIS) journals (electronic and paper) in two developing countries, i.e. Malaysia and Pakistan. Design/methodology/approach – The paper is based on the results of a survey distributed to a population consisting of two sets of LIS journal users. The targeted group includes two sets of graduate students from Departments of Library and Information Science, each in an academic institution from one of the two countries. Findings – LIS journals have as their objective the provision of guidance in the education and learning process of LIS students and the provision of leadership in the practice of librarianship. The profession needs to have a heightened awareness of LIS journals and requires fast and easy access to this body of literature. For developing countries this objective can only be met through help of developed nations who can provide improved means to access LIS journals more efficiently and more effectively in both paper and electronic format. Research limitations/implications – The results of this study did not take in a large population of LIS journal users, but they do provide ground for further research in this area. Practical implications – The results of the survey questionnaire provide a better understanding about the usefulness of LIS journals as an educational tool and their contribution towards development of librarianship in both countries. Originality/value – There is comparatively little written on the use of LIS journals in developing countries. This paper helps fill that gap. The choice of a comparison between two contrasting developing countries' use of the literature is particularly useful, because the contrast throws into sharper relief the appropriate actions that should be taken to meet user needs. This paper aims to examine how librarians construe organizational culture based on employees' satisfaction, good leadership, and organizational support with knowledge sharing practices relationships. The quantitative research method, using a structured questionnaire comprised of three constructs of Organizational Culture (OC), including employees' satisfaction, good leadership, and organizational support, and six constructs of Knowledge Sharing (KS) (innovation, collaboration, communication channel, trust, loyalty, and ethics), was considered as the most suitable for this study. Correlation research design and Pearson correlation test were used for examining the relationships between OC and KS with respect to academic librarians. The findings disclosed significant relationships between OC and KS among the study participants. Organizational support followed by good leadership style and employees' satisfaction are the strong predictors of knowledge sharing practices in the context of this study. This study has some practical implications for academic library administrators to consider the role of effective organizational culture in promoting knowledge sharing practices among LIS professionals. The purpose of this paper is to identify the usage of Social Networking Sites (SNS), purposes and trends by Pakistani Higher Education Institution (HEI) libraries. It is to evaluate the usefulness of SNS for outreaching to users, marketing of library resources and services and challenges faced by the library professional. This study conducted as a mixed method of research, a literature-based questionnaire was developed to conduct an online survey of the 54, Higher Education Commission (HEC) recognized HFJ’s libraries based in two cities of Pakistan: Lahore and Islamabad and interviews were conducted of 15 libraries having presence on social networking sites (SNS). It was found that the Pakistani HEI’s libraries are constructively using social networking sites. The most famously used site is Facebook, while RSS and YouTube were the least used one. None of the responding library present on Linkedln, MySpace and Wikis. Many of the libraries daily update their social media profiles for marketing of library product and services, sharing library news, events and useful links. However, lack of LIS professionals training and awareness to the possible usability of the SNS is challenging. Purpose – This paper is part of a doctoral research which aimed at proposing a national information system for educational administrators in Pakistan. However, this paper only aims at identifying what an information system is composed of and does; defining the information infrastructure (i.e. libraries/information centers and networks) needed for the development of a national educational information system; identifying the nature and design of the information infrastructure in Pakistan; and ascertaining the problems and gaps existing in the information infrastructure of Pakistan and why they exist. Design/methodology/approach – The study is based on review of the available literature. For the literature search, valid sources of published and unpublished information were consulted (i.e. books, journal articles, reports, conference/workshop proceedings, theses and dissertations). Findings – Many library/information centers and information networks are working in the educational domain of Pakistan. The position of academic, national and special libraries is also presented in this review. The basic weakness traced in this review is in the infrastructure of library/information centers and information networks and disintegration of available information sources. The information does exist within libraries/information centers and information networks but the educational administrators have problems in tracing this information. As a result, available information is not being utilized properly in educational planning and development in Pakistan. There is a need to pool the existing information sources, services and networks in one place to form a well-integrated information system that may provide a holistic and complete overview of education enterprise for realistic planning and resource allocation. The purpose of this paper is to highlight roles and functions of university and special libraries in research and reveal the role these libraries and librarians in Pakistan. Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to discuss the effects of earthquakes on libraries and educational institutions in the region of Azad Kashmir in Pakistan. Design/methodology/approach – The paper is based on a review of the literature published in the newspapers, face-to-face and telephonic interviews and donor reports from the area. Inputs (people, knowledge, material, capital and finance), processes, outputs and feedback mechanism of libraries in Kashmir are described. Practical implications – The barriers to implementing the strategies offered in this paper are essentially practical: resource constraints and related social or governmental factors. The paper suggests to strictly follow the building codes prescribed by the international standard bodies. The paper also suggests to strictly monitor the construction of the educational institutions and libraries and to control the corruption involved in contracting out the tenders, etc. This study attempts to highlight the importance of disaster management and training during such kind of disasters and preservation strategies for libraries. Originality/value – The paper is useful not only to understand what strategies should be adopted during such kind of disasters but also to review the picture of the state of libraries and educational institutions post earthquake in Pakistan. The purpose of this paper is to explore the concept and need of marketing in library and information centers in Pakistan. It discusses the fundamental concepts of marketing and their relevance to LIS. The modem libraries are compelled to justify their need for resources and ought to provide customer oriented services. This requires paradigm shift from product orientation to customer orientation, from collection-centered to clients centered libraries. Purpose – Library practicum is a supervised, hands-on practice in various library functions. This paper aims to explore the effectiveness of library practicum in learning various professional skills through the perception of library information science (LIS) graduates. Design/methodology/approach – Since this is a case study, multiple data collection techniques, i.e. a questionnaire survey (having both closed and open ended questions), and discussions with senior faculty members and observation (as a participant observer) are used to probe the real status. LIS graduates of PU sessions 2002-2006 are identified as the population. The total number of the population is 367 and targeted sample is 118 graduates. Snowball sampling technique is used to reach them. Findings – The findings reveal that well designed and well managed practicum plays a vital role in improving professional skills. Insufficient practicum duration, communication gap among three parties (students, external and internal supervisor), loose supervision and lack of focus on professional skills are the problems reported by LIS graduates. Practical implications – As a study of the practical elements of studying library science, the paper should be of interest to practitioners. Originality/value – This paper is the only evaluation of library practicum in Pakistan. Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to draw an exact and accurate picture of classification problems being faced by libraries having a reasonable amount of collections on Islam. Different classification systems have been developed during the last two centuries to organize library materials. Where these systems provided libraries with better solution for organization of materials, the systems have also some limitations. Religious materials are one of the areas where these systems could not satisfy a reasonable number of libraries. The libraries that have rich collections on Islam are also facing such problems. This study has been conducted with the aim of addressing this problem. Design/methodology/approach – The study comprises a precise review of literature relevant to this problem, along with the collection and analysis of data from such libraries from all the main cities of Pakistan. The data have been collected using the interview technique. Findings – The review of literature and empirical data collected for this study show that the libraries are facing problems regarding the classification of materials where there are rich collections on Islam. The standard classification systems have not provided proper place and enumeration to Islamic topics in their schemes. There is no standard or uniform practice among the libraries to classify materials on Islam. Different libraries are using different systems, which has resulted placement of same materials at different locations. There is no coordination among libraries having rich collections on Islam for some common plan of action to resolve the problem in hand. No work on automated classification has been done in Pakistan so far and this is the area that needs working on in the future. Research limitations/implications – The paper focusses on materials in libraries in one country only, however highlights issues relevant to other Islamic countries in organizing such materials. Originality/value – The paper discusses an area of professional concern that has been discussed widely in Islamic countries, but only in a limited fashion outside of Islamic countries. Purpose - The purpose of this paper is to investigate library web sites in Pakistan, to analyse their content and navigational strengths and weaknesses and to give recommendations for developing better web sites and quality assessment studies. Design/methodology/approach - Survey of web sites of 52 academic, special, public and national libraries in Pakistan based on a 77-item checklist. Findings - Pakistani libraries have developed web sites over the past few years but these are few in number. No directory is available to locate library web sites and no scholarly literature has been written on this topic in Pakistan. No standards for content selection were considered in developing library web sites so they lack uniformity and often miss important features. Research limitations/implications - This research includes web sites of all types of libraries in Pakistan. Web sites with at least one independent page on a parent organisation's web site are included. Originality/value - This study is the first of its kind ever conducted in Pakistan. Purpose - This paper aims to analyse features and functions of indigenously developed web-based catalogues of academic, special and national libraries of Pakistan. Design/methodology/approach - The assessment of 16 OPACs is based on a 91-item checklist developed with the help of previous studies conducted in other countries. Findings - The paper finds that indigenous web OPACs are at an initial stage of development and only offer basic facilities to their users. They do not offer facilities many OPACs in advanced countries already offer. Their shortcomings include the absence of MARC format and Z39.50 protocol, which are indispensable for shared cataloguing. A very few catalogues can accommodate non-Roman scripts like Urdu and other local languages. Originality/value - The comparison of features and functions of web OPACs can be useful to understand the level of OPAC development in Pakistan. Purpose – The purpose of this study is to answer the following questions: what are an open system and its components? How can the open system model be used to describe a library system including its objectives and functions? What is the situation of librarianship in Pakistan in terms of the elements, characteristics and features of an open system model? Design/methodology/approach – The study is based on a review of the literature. The challenges which are faced by librarianship today are presented as a supra-system of a library system. Inputs (people, knowledge, material, energy, capital and finance), processes, outputs and feedback mechanism of Pakistani librarianship are described. Characteristics of an open system such as users, controller, cycle of events, teleology, mission and negative entropy are presented with special reference to libraries in Pakistan. Findings – That the Library system in Pakistan would benefit from the application of an open systems approach, but resource and other constraints prevent this from happening. Research limitations/implications – Attempts to show how open systems theory can be applied to the sphere of a national library system. Practical implications – The barriers to implementing the systems model offered in this paper are essentially practical: resource constraints, political priorities, and related social or governmental factors. Originality/value – The paper is useful not only to understand how a library can be studied using systems theory but also to have a picture of the present state of librarianship in Pakistan. This study explores the facilities and problems related to the public sector college libraries of Punjab Province of Pakistan in terms of resources i.e. stock, staff, finance, buildings, furniture etc. It was a quantitative research based on survey method. Cluster sampling technique was used to collect data from college librarians. A structured questionnaire was sent to college librarians through postal mail with self addressed return envelope. 48 respondents out of 63 (76%) returned back-filled questionnaires. The data collected through questionnaire was statistically analyzed using frequency statistics. On the basis of analysis, results have been drawn. Findings revealed the library professionals opinions about problems faced by college libraries in Punjab Province of Pakistan. It has been found that college libraries are facing a lot of problems. They have not proper and purpose built library buildings. They are facing the problems of inadequate staff, lack of furniture, insufficient library material and improper shelving of library material etc. This paper makes recommendations that can help to solve the problems of college libraries especially in Punjab Province and generally in Pakistan. It will help library administrators in policy making and allocation of funds for college libraries. The author comments on the 17th Pakistan Library Association (PLA) Conference in Islamabad, Pakistan from March 27-28, 2007. He details the events that transpired during the conference, along with the key issues discussed by the participants. Objective: The prime aim of this study is to review the preventive measures for libraries in current pandemic of COVID-19 in the world and suggest special safety procedures for libraries in Pakistan. Material and Methods: Content analysis approach was used to review the available web literature about the current position of libraries during and after COVID-19. Efforts were made to comment the preventive measures adopted by various library associations and leading libraries of the world. Results: Being a social entity, libraries in Pakistan need to adopt the COVID-19 precautionary measures as in practice in the world libraries. The library practitioners in our country have to follow the same Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) in libraries for safety of their users as operated by the international library communities. Library staff and patrons should be trained to safeguard the lives of the society. The various library associations of the country should have to come forward and work for the survival of our libraries in this difficult time through awareness campaign on social media and WhatsApp groups. Online training sessions can also be arranged for the COVID-19 literacy of the library staff and library clientele. Conclusion: The adoption of COVID-19 precautionary measures in libraries will result into a better library culture. There appears a change in reading trends in the growing digital culture around the globe. The current research intended to identify the influence of this culture on the reading behaviour of young adults. A survey of final year Masters students from public and private sector universities in various knowledge domains (sciences and technology, social sciences, and arts and humanities) was conducted. The findings revealed a number of significant differences in both reading patterns and preferred reading formats among students of three knowledge domains. The findings suggest that all subjects should be treated separately when deciding on collection development and library services. This exploratory study proves that the digital environment creates a significant impact on individuals' reading behaviour which needs to be considered by academics and library practitioners. Professional Training Programs (PTPs) are a lifelong leaning process and are indispensable for professional growth. Pakistan Academy for Rural Development (PARD), Peshawar, Pakistan since its inception, has a rich experience of training, research and experimentation. The library at PARD has been instrumental in effective service delivery to its users from the last 50 years. Although the library had been involved in conducting short refresher courses for Library & Information Science (LIS) professionals rather in an informal context, however, the library decided in 2008 to launch training programs for professionals. Since then, the library has conducted ten professional trainings so far on different areas like: (i) Library Automation, (ii) Library Management, (iii) Information Technology Applications, (iv) Knowledge & Information Management, (v) Communication, (vi) structured/unstructured Information, (vii) Leadership & Management and (viii) Needed competencies in the context of library and information systems and services, furthering continuing education opportunities for over 600 senior and mid-career level professionals. Evaluation reports and feedback from the participants revealed that the programs had intensively developed their professional and personal capabilities in several areas. Further, analysis of the pre-test and post-test reveal that participants have considerably improved their knowledge and skills in areas like collection development, collection organization, service design and delivery activities. Giving a brief description about the historical perspectives, the paper provides an overview of the program contents, objectives, schedule, delivery methods, participant profiles and evaluation of the program. This study was conducted with purpose to explore the elapsed and hidden treasures of Cholistan dessert in South Punjab, Pakistan. It discusses the role of university libraries of South Punjab, museums, Pakistan National library, Pakistan Library Association and HEC, digitization centers and documentation centers. It suggests that grant must be provided for research activities in different aspects of Cholistani Culture including Tribal Folks, Art, Culture, loriyan and old songs. HEC and Punjab government should provide special funds to libraries to support endangered art and culture like Chunri, khusa, paintings, weaving, the famous puppet show of Cholistan, folk songs of Darawar and cultural theatre. New technologies like You- Tube, social networking sites, Facebook, and Web 2.0. etc may be used for public awareness. The purpose of the study is to discover the status of the job market for library professionals in Sindh Province, Pakistan, and to examine the job titles used in advertisements. Content analysis was applied to discover the status of the job market. LIS professional vacancies from 2004 to 2008 in four leading newspapers were analysed. There were 282 announcements during that time. Findings of the study reveal a lack of consistency in job titles. Academic librarianship predominated in the LIS job market during those years. Most of the job titles do not address the requirements of the job market. This paper is the first study done in Pakistan. It is recommended that library professionals, library associations, and LIS departments to design a uniform descriptive nomenclature and help the provincial government understand the importance and necessity of LIS professionals in national development. This paper is a case study of the University of Sargodha Library as an attempt to presents and investigate information about the city of Sargodha, University of Sargodha and its library matters i.e. plan, policies, executive structure, rules & regulations, collection, library building, library staff, information resources, facilities and services, various sections, library automation, Library Committee, etc. The purpose is the exploration of new suggestions and recommendations for improvement. Findings of the study shows that the library is facing various problems in terms of shortage of professional staff, management issues, automation of the library services and procedures, and library staffs training. This case study identifies inadequate provision of information services, reference services, indexing and abstracting and other bibliographic services, inter library loan services, user education and translation service. This paper intends to investigate the existing reference services and resources in the University Libraries of Lahore (ULL), Pakistan. Very few studies are conducted to find out the status of reference services in different libraries of Pakistan but there is no data available on reference services of ULL. Keeping in view the gaps and need of the time, the basic purpose of this survey is to get the broad understanding about different aspects of reference services especially the types of reference services, collection, staff, budget, physical facilities and digital reference services. The survey is limited to all ULL (N=17). The data was collected through mail, e-mail and personal visits. Sindh Archives Information and Archives Department (SALAD) Were established under the Department of Education, Government of Sindh in 1976. Only a few researches have been conducted which provide scanty information. Even no edited work, leaflet, brochure or newsletter was published from the inception to date. This article is an effort to introduce the archival repository and the unsung asset of SAIAD through its history and development during the last 31 years. Most of the information has been obtained from the unpublished materials, personal observation and personal communication. This paper is a case study of the Pakistan Library Automation Group, formed in October 2000 by volunteers in library and information science and computer science in Pakistan. The group's mission was to promote the use of ICT in Pakistani libraries with virtually no financial support. The achievements of the group during 6 years include: PakLAG Website; Automation of libraries with Library Information Management System (LIMS); Multilingual Web OPAC; Searching interface of National Digital Library; Online directory of LIS professionals; Publications program; Pak-LIS News; E-mail discussion group; Online posting of job advertisements; Virtual library; Training in ICTs for library professionals; and free consultancy service in library automation. The group's future plans are also presented. The study concludes that, if some committed professionals present themselves for voluntary endeavors and plan to develop their nation without any material resources, they can play a significant role in the promotion of ICT in the libraries of a developing country. There are more than 300 libraries in Lahore. The libraries of Lahore occupied respectable place in the pre-partition India so much that the city was then called the cradle of library movement of the country. Its two libraries, the Punjab Public Library (founded 1884) and the Punjab University Library (founded 1873) held an important place in the subcontinent. Best libraries of Pakistan are pride of this city. Quaid-i-Azam Library, Diyal Singh Trust Library and GCU Library are one of them. But no resource-sharing network exists among these major and renowned libraries. Purpose - This paper reports a study into the current status of, and future prospects for, community informatics (CI) services in libraries in Pakistan. Design/methodology/approach - It is based on a questionnaire survey of academic and public libraries, and community centres, in the major cities of Pakistan, backed up by interviews with librarians and community leaders. Findings - It is found that while most libraries provide community information services, these are of traditional kind, and there are very few examples of information and communication technologies-based CI. There is enthusiasm for developing such services among librarians, and high regard for library services in the community. Essential factors are funding for provision of equipment and training, and awareness raising in the community. Research limitations/implications - The study was limited to a sample of libraries in large cities. Practical implications - Proposals for development of a government-sponsored CI initiative are presented. Originality/value - This is the only study to date which investigates the role of libraries for CI provision in Pakistan, and one of very few which studies this topic in a developing country. Natural disasters can strike without warning anytime anywhere anyone. There are different types of disasters. The economic losses caused by these disasters are mainly more expensive for developing countries that are vulnerable to the disasters like India and Pakistan in this case. Different types of libraries including university libraries and museums are priceless storehouses of knowledge, which once lost could be lost forever. Disaster planning needs to be done in university libraries to save the knowledge for future generations. This is true for all types of libraries everywhere. To study the situation of disaster management in university libraries of India and Pakistan literature review will be done. Information from various websites of both the countries will be collected. Regarding information on university libraries in Pakistan emails will be sent to select university librarians to find out whether they have any disaster management plans and similar studies be searched in professional literature. Initial review of literature shows a nearly similar infrastructural planning in both the countries at central and state government level. Disaster management is an ignored subject in Pakistan as stated by leading newspaper Dawn. Very few papers on this subject are available from Pakistan and intensive and exhaustive review of literature can lead to valid conclusion. In India this was an ignored area but after tsunami there has been awareness at all levels. Majority of the university libraries are ignorant about this important aspect of library planning but there are a few where this is being practiced. This study will highlight similarities and gaps between the approaches to disaster management in university libraries of these two neighbouring countries with nearly similar disaster conditions. The literature on the development of standards of library service in Pakistan has not been systematically identified, listed, and reviewed. The purpose of this paper is to identify, as far as possible, the work already done and to have a critical look at the accessible literature. Most of the work previously done is based on individual effort and, in general, lacks methodical and systematic approach. In most cases the proposed quantitative standards seem to be excessive and unrealistic which do not seem to be enforceable considering the budgetary situation in Pakistani libraries. Formulation of standards has become critical now due to the changed information environment, enormous growth in academic and research institutions and information-oriented private sector enterprises with a resulting increase in the number of LIS professionals. It is recommended that the Pakistan Library Association should create a permanent structure to work on this area. The aim of this study was to explore the status, collection, and challenges of community libraries in the capital of Pakistan. A purposive sampling technique was used for data collection from 12librarians/library in-charges working in these community libraries. This study found that the collection of reading materials in the community libraries was between 4000 to 7000 and offered Web-OPAC, interlibrary loan, books borrow services. These libraries have proper websites, classified books, adequate sitting arrangements, and a heating and cooling system to support the community. Though, these libraries were facing some major challenges such as lack of sufficient funds, lack of training opportunities for LIS, old library building, lack of attention of Government, and non-availability of electronic resources. Similarly, uncomfortable furniture and lack of knowledge about new library trends among librarians were the major obstacles in the effective utilization of community libraries in the capital of Pakistan. Through reliable research work, the findings of this study highlight certain recommendations for developing these community libraries into learning resource centers that could support truly the information needs of the community at large. Purpose – The purpose of the study is to analyze the prevailing digitization practices in university libraries of Pakistan. Design/methodology/approach – The study adopted quantitative research design and survey research method was used to conduct the study. A structured questionnaire was used to collect the data from the subjects of the study. Findings – Digitization practices were found at budding stage in university libraries of Pakistan. One-third libraries were doing digitization. Three highest ranked digitization goals were to: provide access via web, increase access, and preservation. Theses and dissertations were found the top most priority for digitization in terms of types of material. The criteria for selection of material for digitization varied and social sciences was the most focused area for digitization. Originality/value – This is the first ever study conducted in Pakistan on this topic. The findings are beneficial for university libraries, funding bodies and the higher education commission of Pakistan as well as other countries with similar social and economic conditions. The paper aims to explore different applications of social media for marketing of library and information resources and services. It investigates the respondent's attitude towards the usefulness of social media in marketing of library. A survey research method was administered by using a peer-reviewed and pilot-tested questionnaire. Data were collected from librarians and LIS school academicians working at Bahauddin Zakariya University of Multan and the Islamia University of Bahawalpur. Findings showed that respondent's attitude was positive; majority agreed that the use of social media is important to capture the attention of online users and helps in distance learning and knowledge sharing. Respondents recommended the use of Facebook, Wikis, LinkedIn, Blogging, YouTube and online groups for marketing different library services. They indicated that inadequate training opportunities, lack of knowledge, privacy and identity theft, slow speed of internet and electricity failure are the problems for applying social media in libraries of Pakistan for marketing library resources and services. They demanded for trainings for social media usage and suggested that libraries should develop social media page for maximum exploitation of library services. The paper aims to examine the development and growth of the university libraries in Pakistan. It also examines the obstacles in the provision of better library services in the universities of the country. The study is based on an extensive review of the available literature, personal observations of the author and discussions with the senior library professionals. It was found that the situation of university libraries in Pakistan is a satisfactory compared to other types of libraries, but they are not meeting the required standards and are not participating in the universities' educational and research programs satisfactorily. This paper reports the findings of a study on the debate of free versus fee based library services in Pakistan. The review of literature revealed that no formal survey on this topic has been carried out before. A questionnaire based survey of selected experts in the field of library and information science from various cities was conducted. Their interviews were also audio-recorded. The library leaders opined on the arguments in favour of and against user fee in libraries. The results show that the respondents are in favour of user fee. The paper reports on a research study conducted to find out the funding situation of large libraries in Pakistan. It considers their funding sources, satisfaction with present funding, funding needs and the activities for which they demand more funding. The methodologies used included a literature review and a questionnaire survey. The results reveal that libraries in Pakistan have been provided funds without the use of any formula. Provincial governments are the major source of library funding in the country. Libraries also receive funds from the federal government and from their parent institutions. Some libraries also generate their own funds, which include endowments and bank profit (interest) on library security money. Most of the libraries are dissatisfied with their present funding. Among them college and university libraries are more dissatisfied. Libraries demand large increases in their budgets to fund a variety of services including the purchase of the latest materials, the use of modern technology, the improvement in professional status, the organization of materials and the improvement of the standard of library services. Surveying the growth of public libraries in Pakistan prior to and following independence, this paper shows that development has been at best a piecemeal affair and at worst non-existent. Although some libraries seek to fulfil their goal of providing quality service to the public, most are hampered by overwhelming economic, social and educational problems. Notwithstanding this gloomy scenario, it is suggested that library planning based on awareness of indigenous needs and with realistic aims can achieve far more than has been the case in the past. This article highlights the seminar held by Farheen Education Society during Library Day at the Liaquat Memorial Library on February 21, 2007. It was organized with the cooperation of the University of Karachi's Department of Library and Information Science. The chief guest was Fatima Surrya Bajia, advisor to the governor of Sindh, Pakistan. According to Bajia, without books and teachers no education can be implanted. The welcome address given by Professor Malahat Kaleem Sherwani, chairperson of the Department of Library and Information Science at University of Karachi, emphasized that encouragement from knowledgeable friends is essential to the establishment of libraries and promotion of reading habits.

Emotional intelligence has a strong link with academic anxieties. It is apparent from the published literature that a student with high emotional intelligence would face low academic anxiety and vice versa. Similarly, library anxiety, which is an academic anxiety, also affects students' academic performance. Library anxiety of students may increase or decrease along with their ability to understand and manage their own emotions and those of others. However, there is a dearth of literature on the relationship between these two concepts. Data regarding these concepts were collected from university undergraduates. Findings established significant relationships between emotional intelligence, library anxiety and academic performance among the participants. The basic purpose of the research is to inquire into the underlying reasons of whether or not there is job satisfaction of the library staff at Beacon house School System. A qualitative methodology with Herzberg's two-factor theory has been used for this research.1 Fifteen school librarians took part in the interviews. Despite a few cases, the study revealed a common general concord with Herzberg's reasoning, vis-à-vis the reasons leading to staff satisfaction or dissatisfaction. This study attempts to examine attitude of the members of the parliament (MPs) towards the use and services of National Assembly Library of Pakistan (NALP). Aspects: information use, examine the use of library as well as type of resources used and preferred format and language of use are included in this study. The study seeks to assess the level of importance they place on each of the sources and use of National Assembly Library. Keeping in view the exploratory and explanatory nature of the study's objectives, the study also tries to judge their level of satisfaction with the attitude of staff, quality of information and services provided by the National Assembly Library. The findings suggest that new strategies are needed by the parliamentary library in the attempt to serve the members of the parliament in order that they have convenient access to quality information, to fulfill their parliamentary business and commitment and necessary for legislative matters. The objective of this study was to investigate the relationship between emotional intelligence and general job satisfaction of librarians. For this purpose, a quantitative study was conducted on librarians serving in university libraries of Pakistan. A randomly selected sample of Pakistani university librarians completed a questionnaire survey measuring their responses on emotional intelligence and job satisfaction. Multiple regression analysis indicated that all indicators of emotional intelligence were significant predictors of job satisfaction. The results showed that self-assessment was the strongest predictor while optimism was the weakest predictor of job satisfaction. The findings are useful for libraries and other organizations interested in developing emotional intelligence and improving workers’ job satisfaction, which ultimately may lead to effective performance. The aim of the study is to explore the service status of special academic libraries of Southern Punjab, Pakistan. It is imperative that the development of the library and its services must be evaluated from time to time in order to bring continuous improvement and qualitative change in the overall functioning of the libraries. The region of Southern Punjab, Pakistan has always been ignored in terms of education, development and progress. The data we recollected through questionnaire survey from library patrons of special academic libraries, for the purpose 160 questionnaires were distributed in the different institutes of Southern Punjab. The return response rate was 75%. The analysis revealed that library users are not satisfied with library services e.g. reading material, circulation, reference and e-services. The libraries of Southern Punjab arc facing many problems due to remote/less development. The recommendations have been formulated to the conclusions of the study like measures for better library services from the institutes, provision of e-library services, hiring of qualified and trained library staff.
