The variability in the atmospheric electric field is modulated by a combination of solar activities, meteorological activities, and geological conditions. A foundational dataset of the daily variations in the fair-weather atmospheric electric field is established in this study, and several examinations are conducted into the details of these variations in particular regions. This paper is organized as follows. First, the researchers count the datasets of daily variations to the atmospheric electric field on fair-weather days from 1 March–1 August 2022 at Zhongshan Chinese Station in Antarctica and Changping Station in Beijing. Then, the average daily variation in the atmospheric electric field on 40 fair-weather days in Antarctica is shown and the variations are compared with the average curve of 37 fair-weather days in Beijing during the same time period. Electric field measurements at Vostok station in Antarctica reveal that the El Niño—Southern Oscillation (ENSO) has a statistically significant effect on the global electric circuit, as earlier predicted by simulations. Analysis of 10 October‐February periods during 2006–2016 indicates that the shape of the diurnal variation of the surface electric field is significantly different for El Niño and La Niña years, with an especially pronounced deviation during the super El Niño of 2015/16. During strong El Niños the potential gradient relative to the diurnal mean is generally higher than usual around 8:00–14:00 UTC and lower than usual around 16:00–0:00 UTC; La Niñas are characterized by the opposite behavior. Simulations with the Weather Research and Forecasting model imply that the observed patterns are the result of changes in the global distribution of electrified clouds over the Pacific Ocean, Maritime Continent, and South America during ENSO events. Being made up of irregularly alternating warm (El Niño) and cold (La Niña) phases, the ENSO affects atmospheric circulation, global temperature and rainfall patterns, agriculture, and economic output. Recent simulations have suggested that changes in global convection patterns due to ENSO should also affect surface atmospheric electric fields and currents in remote regions of the planet. Here, we present electric field measurements performed during 2006–2016 at Vostok station in the Antarctic that reveal clear patterns related to ENSO as earlier predicted by simulations. The polar regions are host to fundamental unresolved challenges in Earth studies. The nature of these regions necessitates the use of geophysics to address these issues, with electromagnetic and, in particular, magnetotelluric studies finding favour and being applied over a number of different scales. The unique geography and climatic conditions of the polar regions means collecting magnetotelluric data at high latitudes, which presents challenges not typically encountered and may result in significant measurement errors. (1) The very high contact resistance between electrodes and the surficial snow and ice cover (commonly MΩ) can interfere with the electric field measurement. This is overcome by using custom-designed amplifiers placed at the active electrodes to buffer their high impedance contacts. (2) The proximity to the geomagnetic poles requires verification of the fundamental assumption in magnetotellurics that the magnetic source field is a vertically propagating, horizontally polarised plane wave. Behaviour of the polar electro-jet must be assessed to identify increased activity (high energy periods) that create strong current systems and may generate non-planar contributions. (3) The generation of 'blizstatic', localised random electric fields caused by the spin drift of moving charged snow and ice particles that produce significant noise in the electric fields during periods of strong winds. At wind speeds above ~ 10 m s−1, the effect of the distortion created by the moving snow is broad-band. Station occupation times need to be of sufficient length to ensure data are collected when wind speed is low. (4) Working on glaciated terrain introduces additional safety challenges, e.g., weather, crevasse hazards, etc. Inclusion of a mountaineer in the team, both during the site location planning and onsite operations, allows these hazards to be properly managed. Examples spanning studies covering development and application of novel electromagnetic approaches for the polar regions as well as results from studies addressing a variety of differing geologic questions are presented. Electromagnetic studies focusing on near-surface hydrologic systems, glacial and ice sheet dynamics, as well as large-scale volcanic and tectonic problems are discussed providing an overview of the use of electromagnetic methods to investigate fundamental questions in solid earth studies that have both been completed and are currently ongoing in polar regions. • The Madden-Julian Oscillation (MJO) affects the DC global electric circuit (GEC). • MJO-related patterns are seen in both simulations and electric field measurements. • On average, GEC parameters manifest sine-like variations with the phase of the MJO. • Regional contributions to the GEC reflect deep convection changes during MJO events. • Key GEC-reflected convection changes are over the Maritime Continent and Indian Ocean. The Madden–Julian Oscillation (MJO) is the most dominant component of the climate variability in the tropics on the timescale of tens of days. Occurring irregularly, the MJO consists of an eastward propagation of certain large-scale coupled structures in atmospheric circulation and deep convection. Here we investigate the effect of the MJO on the direct current global electric circuit (GEC), using both numerical simulations and the results of electric field measurements. We have reproduced the atmospheric dynamics for 1980–2020 with the help of the Weather Research and Forecasting model and meteorological reanalysis data; this allowed us to simulate 41 years of the GEC variation by parameterising contributions to the ionospheric potential (IP) in terms of precipitation and convection. Besides, we have analysed the results of surface potential gradient (PG) measurements at the Vostok station in Antarctica during 2006–2020. When averaged over many days, both the simulated IP and measured fair-weather PG show sinewave-like variations with the MJO phase, which manifest a statistically significant correlation with the MJO cycle. A more elaborate investigation involving an application of empirical orthogonal functions shows that the dynamics of contributions to the IP follows the patterns of variability of deep convection typical for the MJO. The variation of the IP on the MJO scale can largely be represented as a superposition of two basic oscillating patterns of convection, one of which is located over the Maritime Continent and its surrounding seas and the other is located over the Indian Ocean and part of South-East Asia. These oscillating patterns together describe the eastward progression of perturbations and can be naturally associated with the two components of the Real-time Multivariate MJO index, widely used to describe the MJO. Together with earlier results about links between the GEC and the El Niño—Southern Oscillation, the results concerning the MJO obtained in this study indicate that the GEC is an important part of the Earth system, which reflects climate variability on different timescales.
