A sewer system is a principal element of infrastructure in modern cities, accounting for massive amounts of public investments. Corrosion of manholes in the sewer system is a global issue, and millions of dollars are being spent on the maintenance, restoration, and replacement of deteriorated sewer networks. Concrete manholes in the sewer system are deteriorating due to the attack of sulfuric acid produced by microorganisms in a process termed microbial induced concrete corrosion (MICC), which reduces the lifespan of concrete sewer elements. The objective of this paper is to investigate the correlation between the gas- and liquid-phase sewer environmental factors and hydrogen sulfide concentration in the gas phase. The production, emission, and build-up of hydrogen sulfide gas in manholes is identified as a major cause of MICC in manhole shafts. The field study was conducted in more than 200 manholes in the City of Arlington (Texas, US). The data was collected every minute for 48 h to understand the trends of liquid- and gas-phase parameters such as hydrogen sulfide (H2S concentration), liquid and gas temperature, pH, DO, and relative humidity. The study also examines how gas-phase H2S concentrations vary with season; manhole design, including manholes' depth, slope, and presence of drop; and sewer flow conditions such as velocity and turbulence. Although no strong linear correlation was found between liquid-/gas-phase parameters, the manhole categories were found to play a significant role in H2S generation. The manholes with hydraulic jump generated the highest average H2S concentrations, followed by manholes with drops. High turbulence zones were observed in manholes of both categories, leading to H2S stripping from liquid to gas phase. The highest H2S concentration was recorded in summer, suggesting that higher liquid temperature resulted in increased bacterial activity, which generated greater liquid-phase sulfide. This paper presents a novel approach to intersection improvement planning utilizing telematics data from connected vehicles to generate performance measures for mobility, safety, and emissions. Congestion, crashes, and emissions are three major issues in urban areas, particularly at intersections, and agencies often struggle to prioritize improvement plans because of a lack of objective data. Traditional infrastructure sensors provide limited information at selected locations, but it is not feasible to deploy them at all intersections. The use of telematics data from connected vehicles provides a high granularity of information on driving events and trajectories that can be used in conjunction with vehicle emission modeling to efficiently generate performance measures for all intersections. In a case study of over 300 intersections in Arlington, Texas, the Pareto front method was used to evaluate and rank intersections based on multiple criteria. Intersections falling on the Pareto front were identified as having at least one outstanding (poor) performance measure and were required to be given priority for improvement. The results were cross-validated with historical crash reports and the judgments of city traffic engineers, demonstrating the effectiveness of the proposed framework in generating objective and reliable intersection performance measures. This approach has the potential to significantly improve intersection safety, mobility, and environmental impact, and can serve as a valuable decision-support tool for transportation agencies. In November 1966, at the Southern Historical Association (SHA) convention in Memphis, Tennessee, some 20 participants organized the Association of the Southern Labor Historians whose purpose was to promote the Southern labor history by encouraging the collection of labor records in various states and tile presentation of scholarly labor papers at annual meetings concurrent with SHA. The author and his friends inquired that no university in the Southwest was soliciting labor records. Professor Dick Shuttee, a labor economist at the University of Texas, Arlington, (UTA) was quite enthusiastic about the idea of an archives. With the permission of the History Department of UTA, the author and his colleagues started the Archives Project with a half-summer salary. About three dozen Texas labor newspapers and newsletters have been collected or have been purchased from other archives' microfilmed holdings. The Texas Labor Archives of UTA is currently the only depository in the Southwest that actively seeks union records.

Cities around the world have amassed a variety of data. A main challenge lies in transforming these big data into meaningful knowledge that can inform a city's strategic decisions and enhance urban sustainability. Along with this challenge is the debate about "Wisdom of Crowds" (WOC) in the Petabyte Age. Using the City of Arlington, Texas as a case study, this research explores a hybrid approach for social inquiries with the aid of WOC and spatial learning techniques to leverage data for developing predictive models to support a city's service planning. The results indicate that there exist temporal and spatial patterns of service demands, spatial correlation between demands for code compliance and water services, as well as association with neighborhood characteristics. The findings point to opportunities for further data integration and data mining, organizational collaboration, and resource management to improve the efficiency of service provision in cities. Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to define and describe informal screencasting (i.e. capturing your actions on a computer screen with the goal of showing others how to accomplish tasks on a website or in a given software environment). Customer-satisfaction survey results from 103 faculty, staff, and students are presented. Design/methodology/approach – An online survey revealing customer satisfaction with informal screencasts was made available in Spring 2010 to faculty, staff, and students of a mid-sized public university in Arlington, Texas, USA. Results are compiled, analyzed, and presented here. Findings – Most participants' reactions to the librarian's informal screencasts were positive or quite positive, but many participants still noted that they would prefer to receive e-mail instructions in answer to their questions. Research limitations/implications – The survey was not distributed to a representative sample of the population; instead, the author solicited participants via e-mail, so the participant pool was a convenience sample, which could introduce bias in the results. Originality/value – This survey is the first to assess academic library customers' attitudes toward informal screencasting as an instructional tool, as far as the author has been able to determine after an extensive literature search. With aging and deterioration of underground sewer utilities, there is an urgent need for a framework to track their reliability over expected lifetime to facilitate asset management decisions like inspection, maintenance, or replacement. This study proposes multilevel, multifailure framework model for reliability evaluation of reinforced concrete sewer pipe (RCSP) considering the effect of adverse environmental factors such as chloride and sulfide induced attacks, uncertainties in different properties, seasonal temperature and humidity variations, and cracking effects. Monte-Carlo simulation with Latin hypercube sampling is chosen for stochastic analysis to reduce the computational burdens and enhance the accuracy. The application of this framework is illustrated for a case study of an RCSP that has been in service for more than 35 years. Based on results, it is shown that at serviceability stage, sulfide wall erosion is redundant relative to other serviceability issues; therefore, it cannot be used solely for serviceability evaluation of RCSP, as previously done in the literature. At the ultimate level, the effect of chloride pitting corrosion dominates and expedites failure rate. It is proven that there is a huge potential for reinforcement brittle failure under the effect of pitting corrosion, which can lead to a catastrophic collapse. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Cities around the world are piloting projects to evaluate the feasibility and benefits of shared autonomous vehicles (SAVs), as their large-scale implementation and integration into public transit systems have the potential to improve individuals' accessibility and transportation equity. To understand the full potential of SAVs and their likely adoption, it is important to identify how the services can be utilized most effectively and what determines the composition of the ridership. This research aims to explore the usage and adoption of SAVs, focusing on a project called RAPID (Rideshare, Automation, and Payment Integration Demonstration) that was launched in Arlington, Texas. We used real-time trip-level ridership data from the SAV platform, conducted a survey of SAV riders, and developed a study based on ordered logistic regression to estimate the determinants of ridership frequency. Data analysis of real-time ridership data revealed that spatial distribution of activities and service accessibility have crucial roles in forming the current users' travel patterns. The findings from the logistic regression demonstrated that those with higher household incomes are less likely to be frequent riders of RAPID, while those who usually walk, bike, or utilize on-demand ridesharing services are likely to use SAVs often. Users with higher levels of safety perception are also more likely to be frequent users of the service. The findings of this study will provide planners with a better understanding of SAV ridership patterns and will guide decision-makers nationwide in establishing and adopting policies that will be appropriate for future SAV implementation projects. Comprehensive smoke-free policy is a strategy to prevent cardiovascular disease (CVD) at a population-level; however, evaluating their long-term outcomes is difficult. This study used an agent-based model to estimate long-term impacts of a comprehensive smoke-free policy, as it was implemented in two communities, Arlington and Mesquite, Texas. The model predicted the percentage of myocardial infarction (MI), stroke, and diabetes in the population 10 and 20 years following policy adoption. In Arlington, the percentage of the population with these conditions each decreased by approximately 0.5% over 20 years; in Mesquite, the percentage of the population with diabetes, myocardial infarction (MI), and stroke decreased by 1.1%, 0.6%, and 0.3%, respectively, after 20 years. The results were statistically significant (p < 0.001). As an evaluation strategy, agent-based modeling can help researchers and practitioners estimate the potential long-term effects of policies and garner intervention support for implementation. Abstract: This paper proposes a reformulation of count models as a special case of generalized ordered-response models in which a single latent continuous variable is partitioned into mutually exclusive intervals. Using this equivalent latent variable-based generalized ordered response framework for count data models, we are then able to gainfully and efficiently introduce temporal and spatial dependencies through the latent continuous variables. Our formulation also allows handling excess zeros in correlated count data, a phenomenon that is commonly found in practice. A composite marginal likelihood inference approach is used to estimate model parameters. The modeling framework is applied to predict crash frequency at urban intersections in Arlington, Texas. The sample is drawn from the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) crash incident files between 2003 and 2009, resulting in 1190 intersection-year observations. The results reveal the presence of intersection-specific time-invariant unobserved components influencing crash propensity and a spatial lag structure to characterize spatial dependence. Roadway configuration, approach roadway functional types, traffic control type, total daily entering traffic volumes and the split of volumes between approaches are all important variables in determining crash frequency at intersections. Nurses comprise the largest group of health-care providers and should be key partners for any disaster response in their community. An often untapped resource in many communities is the contingent of nurse faculty, staff and students in schools of nursing across the country. In an effort to provide guidance on how schools and colleges of nursing link with their community and provide real-world experience for students, the present paper: (i) outlines how a Memorandum of Cooperation between the City of Austin and the University of Texas at Austin was created; and (ii) describes an example of how a school of nursing could become organized to respond to a community's call for help. In this paper, we reexamine the issue of whether corporate relocation assistance programs for transferred employees significantly affect sale prices of single-family homes. We estimate a hedonic price equation that includes physical housing characteristics, location factors, occupancy status, and type of seller for a sample of 2,441 transactions. Seller types include (a) transferred employees who were given direct relocation assistance, (b) transferred employees who were not given direct relocation assistance, and (c) sellers who were not facing an employment transfer. After controlling for vacancy and tenant occupancy, we find that houses sold by transferred employees who receive direct relocation assistance exhibit no significant price differential, but that houses sold by transferred employees who do not receive direct relocation assistance sell at a discount of approximately 3%. B Methods: b Patients and clinical stakeholders (i.e., primary care providers, patient care staff, and administrators) were recruited in March 2017 from the Mile Bluff Medical Center, a rural U.S. health system where a teleophthalmology program was established in 2015 for all primary care clinics, but the program was very underutilized. These included a practice's health information technology capacity (0.19, p = 0.001), innovation culture (0.25, p < 0.001), patient engagement strategies (0.54, p < 0.001), the percentage of a practice's revenue from Medicaid (0.26, p < 0.001), having a method for identifying complex, high-need patients (6.76, p = 0.015), and being an FQHC (8.59, p = 0.012). B Methods: b The program facilitated the centralized mailing of FIT tests to patients (through a mail vendor); health centers engaged in various activities to support the program, including reviewing patient lists ("scrub") and removing names of patients who had not yet established care at the health center or were not candidates for screening, delivering patient reminders by phone, and offering patient incentives. The transition of the dental histology course at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio Dental School was completed gradually over a five-year period. A pilot project was initially conducted to study the feasibility of integrating virtual microscopy into a traditional light microscopic lecture and laboratory course. Because of the difficulty of procuring quality calcified and decalcified sections of teeth, slides from the student loan collection in the oral histology block of the course were outsourced for conversion to digital images and placed on DVDs along with a slide viewer. The slide viewer mimicked the light microscope, allowing horizontal and vertical movement and changing of magnification, and, in addition, a feature to capture static images. In a survey, students rated the ease of use of the software, quality of the images, maneuverability of the images, and questions regarding use of the software, effective use of laboratory, and faculty time. Because of the positive support from the students, our entire student loan collection of 153 glass slides was subsequently converted to virtual images and distributed on an Apricorn pocket external hard drive. Students were asked to assess the virtual microscope over a four-year period. As a result of the surveys, light microscopes have been totally eliminated, and microscope exams have been replaced with project slide examinations. Intermediate wheatgrass (IWG) is a new perennial dual-use crop for grain and forage with growing interest among farmers. Intercropping IWG with red clover may increase yield and nutritive value through nitrogen transfer. IWG and red clover planting timing can affect grain and forage yield, and there has not been previous research on this management practice. At two locations (Arlington and Lancaster, WI, USA) a factorial experiment was established two years with two factors: (1) IWG planting date (August through October, and April) and (2) red clover planting season (in the fall with IWG or frost seeded in the next spring). Yield data were collected for two subsequent years. Grain yield was maximized at 515 kg ha−1 and 423 kg ha−1 at Arlington and Lancaster when planted by 26 August and 13 September, respectively. Planting date influenced grain yields in the first harvest year but not in the second. Seeding red clover in the spring increased IWG and red clover biomass compared to seeding it in the fall. In Wisconsin, planting IWG by early September at the latest and planting red clover in the spring is recommended to maximize grain yield. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article describes a model, benefits, and outcomes of a coaching and support group for managers. Professionals in the University of Texas at Austin Employee Assistance Program have created manager groups to support and coach managers in areas of skill development, including interpersonal challenges and communication, while providing a confidential forum for professional discussion. It is basic practice for EAPs to provide support to employees dealing with personal problems and one-on-one consultation for managers about an employee; however, few, if any, EAPs provide group coaching for managers in their roles as leaders. By facilitating manager groups EAPs can help reduce managers' stress and build their supportive and professional networks while helping to develop managers' communication and "soft skills." The University of Texas at Arlington's Library began using an online chat reference in 2002. The service, called Collaborative Digital Reference Service, later became "Ask a Librarian." Slightly over one year later, the library joined the University of Texas System's "Ask a Librarian" service. Both services are powered by software suite called QuestionPoint. In May 2003 and May 2004, the library's reference staff shared their views towards this new reference tool by completing a questionnaire. A series of resonant column tests was conducted on chemically stabilized specimens of sulfate-rich expansive clay from southeast Arlington, Tex. Specimens were tested for different stabilizer types, stabilizer dosages, compaction moisture contents, and confining pressures. Three chemical stabilization methods were used: sulfate resistant type V cement, low calcium class F fly ash, and lime mixed with polypropylene fibers. Results in the small-shear strain amplitude range (<0.0001%) were analyzed to assess the influence of compaction moisture content and confining pressure on the linear shear modulus G[sub max] and material damping D[sub min] of stabilized soil. Tests were also conducted at small- to mid-shear strain amplitude levels (0.0001–0.01%) to assess the threshold strain limit γ[sub th] for each treatment method, and to study the effects of torsional shearing on the rate of degradation of normalized modulus G/G[sub max] of treated soil. A 10%-by-weight dosage of sulfate resistant type V cement was found to give the highest modulus and lowest damping when compacted at 95% of maximum dry unit weight γ[sub d-max] on the wet side of Proctor optimum.
