The Sino–U.S. Treaty of Tientsin (1858), for the first time in history, included an article to ensure the toleration of Protestantism in China, i.e., the Toleration Article. The man behind the article was S. Wells Williams (1812–1884), an interpreter of the U.S. Legation and a former missionary, who negotiated with Chinese officials directly. Williams produced the Chinese version of the clause and its official English translation which led to controversies, for it was deemed unfaithful and humiliating to the Christian communities. This paper revisits this important episode in the history of Protestantism in China. Using first-hand archival materials, it reveals how Williams was forced to "mistranslate" the article in order to satisfy both parties. It further discusses the reasons behind the missionaries' criticism, which placed Williams in the center of clashes between religious and political interests. Through Williams' case, the paper foregrounds the crucial roles and difficult situations of missionary translators in diplomatic incidents that shaped the history of Christianity in China. More importantly, it highlights the conflicting interests and ideas in early Sino–U.S. diplomacy and shows how missionary translators worked to mediate the dilemma between evangelism and politics in 19th-century China. Green finance has become an important reform force to promote the sustainable development of China's economy. Therefore, it has a great significance for in-depth analysis of the advantages and disadvantages of regional green finance development, to further promote it by clarifying and predicting the regional differences and dynamic evolution trends. Based on this, this paper will select the relevant index from 2001 to 2020 to construct China Green Finance Core Network (CGFCN) in different years by using Space-L method at the first, then analyze its network characteristics and spatial evolution pattern in depth, and finally predict the future development trend of CGFCN by link prediction. The research results show that: firstly, the evolution of CGFCN is mainly divided into three stages: rapid development, stable development and optimal development, and the closeness of CGFCN is constantly improving. Besides, two strong relationship networks are gradually forming, that is Beijing-Tianjin region and the Yangtze River Detla region. Secondly, with the development of green finance, the community division has changed. It is mainly divided into four communities, named the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei leading community, the eastern provincial community, the Yangtze River Delta community and the central and southern joint community. Different communities will have different integration in different periods. Thirdly, the future development direction of green finance network is mainly Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region and Yangtze River Delta regions, and their outward radiation are mainly shown in the eastern coastal and central regions, which also have strong development potential. In this regard, it is proposed to coordinate development across provinces to speed up the "urban integration" of green finance services; Establish an efficient community development mechanism and promote the interconnection of green finance markets and infrastructure between different regions; Strengthen the resource flow among regions and coordinate the resource competition of green finance. China's urban expansion, food security, and energy transition are in a critical situation. One solution is to tap into the green production potential of the built urban environment and explore new ways to save land space and alleviate ecological pressure through food and solar energy production. This paper differs from previous ecological compensation studies, which mostly focus on key ecological functional areas or fiscal compensation mechanisms, in that it innovatively establishes an ecological compensation mechanism within the urban space. In this paper, we propose the "green productive area" of cities as a way to measure the ecological carrying capacity improvement potential of cities from the perspective of urban ecology, and it is based on converting the green resource income of cities into the ecological footprint area they could save under the same conditions. First, a typological approach was used to establish a compensation strategy for green production. Second, a spatial inventory was taken of all elements of the built environment and an analysis of their green production potential was carried out. Finally, it was necessary to establish a unified accounting standard for the ecological land saving benefits of different green production options, which could be converted into green productive land area indicators. In the case of Xuefu Street in Nankai District, Tianjin, the available rooftops and idle land were used for green production, which supplemented the ecological carrying capacity provided by the natural land occupied by 12% of the buildings in the district. With the rapid development of the global economy and trade, the number of ships serving ports in China is increasing continuously. Port traffic is becoming busier, and ship behavior is more complex and changeable. The analysis of ship behavior patterns in port waters has become an urgent problem to improve the efficiency and safety of port areas. In this paper, through the full integration of ship trajectory and port geographic information, the behavior chain of a single ship across the whole process of entering and exiting the port is identified. The traffic complexities and dynamics can be further analyzed by grouping the movement patterns of large ships. Based on graph theory, the port areas can be described as a transportation network in which functional areas are nodes and fairways between different areas are edges. The traffic can be analyzed through the network structure characteristics, such as node degree, node weight, and edge weight, and by their similarities and differences. This methodology provides a quantitative analysis for exploring the behavior patterns of large ships as well as the various traffic complexities. A case study in Tianjin Port has been conducted to verify the proposed model. The results show that it can accurately analyze a ship behavior's regularity, occasion, and correlation. This paper explores how ideas and practices of elder-care may be changing for the new Chinese middle class. This paper draws on in-depth interviews with the members of different generations of ten middle class families in the Chinese city of Tianjin. It explores how increased resources but also increased pressure are affecting the care of older people and the expectations around elder-care. Thematic analysis of transcripts entered into NVIVO revealed three findings. Firstly, that the generation born in the 1950s and 1960s are often negotiating their care responsibilities between their parents and their grandchildren. Secondly, the only viable elder-care solution for many families is to buy in support from an unregulated market-based home care sector. Thirdly driven by an increasingly postmodern culture, filial piety may be changing from a normative expectation to a set of new practices based on familial reciprocity. The paper concludes by reflecting on the issues that will arise from the proposed raising of the retirement age in China, and the increasing geographic dispersal of generations. This paper investigates the recovery period of consumer salmon purchase intention after food scares at the Xinfadi wholesale market in China during the COVID-19 pandemic and examines the impact mechanism of risk preference and risk perception on the period duration. Our empirical analysis is based on a survey of 655 salmon consumers in Beijing, Tianjin, and Shanghai. We estimate that the purchase intention recovery period lasts 21 weeks among the surveyed consumers after the shock. Although the epidemic risk levels of the three cities are different, there is a significant difference only in the recovery period from 5 to 7th weeks. The Cox proportional hazards model results further show that consumers with less risk-averse are more active in resuming purchase intention, and the effect of risk perception is just the opposite. Moreover, risk perception has a moderating effect on risk preference and recovery period. Finally, we put forward three possible policy implications: attaching nucleic acid detection certificate, strengthening cold chain management, and diversifying cooking methods. The development of Xiongan New Area in Hebei Province, China, as a significant national choice, has considerable strategic significance for the integrated growth of Beijing, Tianjin, and Hebei. This paper proposes a cloud model for the suitability evaluation of the construction of Xiongan New Area based on entropy weight analysis, taking into account the geological conditions, groundwater environment, environmental geological problems, and other factors of the suitability of image city development. According to the research, the suitability evaluation findings for the project building employing the cloud model are in strong accord with those of the traditional model and have some application potential. The evaluation's findings indicate that the project construction in Xiongan New Area is acceptable, with suitable and relatively suitable sites making up 81.4% of the total area and excellent circumstances for project development, construction, and usage. This study offers helpful direction for Xiongan New Area's urban land-space design and serves as a useful point of comparison for studies looking at the viability of other deep Quaternary Plain region engineering buildings. The Chinese government aims to balance employment stabilization and emissions reduction when it initiates an emissions trading scheme (ETS) to control carbon emissions. However, the policymakers should not neglect the role of imperfectly competitive market structure and market power from incumbent firms. In view of this, classical framework of Berman and Bui's (2001) is extended in this paper to clarify the theoretical mechanism of employment effect of the ETS considering firm-level market power. In addition, based on the firm-level panel data from 2008 to 2019 of China, the employment effect of each pilot ETS is measured with the method of difference-in-difference-in-differences. Then a moderating effect model is established to verify the role of firm-level market power on the heterogeneous employment effect among the pilot ETSs. Moreover, the employment effect is further decomposed to evaluate the influential mechanism from the perspective of firms' strategic behavior. It is found that there is negative employment effect of China's ETS policy, due to the significant moderating role of firm-level market power. This decrease in labor demand is mainly dominated by a negative output effect rather than a positive substitution effect because strategic allowance sellers with stronger market power tend to hire fewer employees to reduce carbon emissions by controlling production scale. However, the heterogeneity of policy effects resulted by market structure is also identified in different pilot regions. Employment dividend has been found in Beijing and Tianjin where strategic allowance buyers manipulate the carbon market and hire more employees to consolidate their market power. Imbalanced classification is widely referred in many real-world applications and has been extensively studied. Most existing algorithms consider alleviating the imbalance by sampling or guiding ensemble learners with punishments. The combination of ensemble learning and sampling strategy at class level has achieved great progress. Actually, specific hard examples have little benefit for model learning and even degrade the performance. From the view of identifying classification difficulty of samples, one important motivation is to design algorithms to finely equip different samples with progressive learning. Unfortunately, how to perfectly configure the sampling and learning strategies under ensemble principles at the sample level remains a research gap. In this paper, we propose a new view from the sample level rather than class level in existing studies. We design an ensemble approach in pipe with sample-level gradient resampling, that is, balanced cascade with filters (BCWF). Before that, as a preliminary exploration, we first design a hard examples mining algorithm to explore the gradient distribution of classification difficulty of samples and identify the hard examples. Specifically, BCWF uses an under-sampling strategy and a boosting manner to train T predictive classifiers and reidentify hard examples. In BCWF, moreover, we design two types of filters: the first is assembled with a hard filter (BCWF_h), whereas the second is assembled with a soft filter (BCWF_s). In each round of boosting, BCWF_h strictly removes a gradient/set of the hardest examples from both classes, whereas BCWF_s removes a larger number of harder and easy examples simultaneously for final balanced-class retention. Consequently, the well-trained T predictive classifiers can be used with two ensemble voting strategies: average probability and majority vote. To evaluate the proposed approach, we conduct intensive experiments on 10 benchmark data sets and apply our algorithms to perform default user detection on a real-world peer to peer lending data set. The experimental results fully demonstrate the effectiveness and the managerial implications of our approach when compared with 11 competitive algorithms. Secondary vocational education faces constant challenges such as the absence of higher quality, industrial structure upgrading, and a mismatch between the supply of skills and the needs of a specific industry. Therefore, investigating the relationship between the structures of secondary vocational school (SVS) programmes and industries can help us understand their positive interactions and reduce skill mismatch, which is of great significance to the strategies of secondary vocational education and sustainable economic development. Studies on the interactive relationship between SVS programmes and industries and the use of quantitative methods are still lacking. To address this research gap, this paper uses the perspective of coupling and coordination to build a conceptual framework and a computation model to measure the relationship between the two. The method of grey relational analysis is utilized to explore the influencing factors between indicators of SVS programmes and the coupling coordination degree(CCD). Using data from Tianjin, China, the findings are as follows: The interaction between the structure of the SVS programme and industries shows that with the increase in the contribution of the SVS programme structure to the coupling system, the CCD between the two also increases. Compared with the primary and tertiary industries, the secondary industrial structure is more closely related to the SVS programme's structure, the interaction between the two has a high degree of influence, and the correlation is relatively high between the indicators of secondary industry programmes in SVSs and the CCD. It is necessary to adjust the number of programmes, increase the number of students in the secondary-industry-related programmes and reduce the number of students in the programmes of the primary and tertiary industries to adapt to the needs of a dynamic industrial structure gradually. SVSs should improve programmes in primary and tertiary industries to enhance students' skills, prepare them for a competitive labour market and strengthen students' transition from school to work. This study found that the coupling coordination relationship between the two is affected by the following crucial factors: interaction between the two, the contribution of the programme's structure, regional featured or key industries, and changes in admission policies by the local education authority. Railway is a fundamental transportation mode for medium and long-distance travel in China. China's railway transport network (CRTN) has become increasingly complex. Clarifying the structure of the CRTN and its robustness to failures is important for ensuring safe operations. This paper uses train schedule data to construct a railway physical network (RPN) and a train service network (TSN), and proposes a method to simulate the CRTN change processes under different attack strategies, clarify its robustness, and identify its backbone. The results show: First, the RPN is a typical scale-free and small-world network, while the TSN presents a complex hierarchical structure; Second, the RPN is robust to random attacks but vulnerable to targeted attacks, and attacks based on the betweenness centrality as evaluated in the RPN is the most effective mode; Third, the backbone network consists 62 cities including Beijing, Tianjin, and Shijiazhuang. In this paper, a survey and two multi-attribute decision-making (MADM) models have been employed to explore critical success factors of e-exhibition in 30 Chinese provinces that is divided into 8 different regions. The research findings showed that in China, the most important success factors of e-exhibition to have green economic recovery are the presence of International collaboration (0.592), green culture (0.490), and visitor's attitude (0.439). Furthermore, "Beijing and Tianjin" is the most ideal region to promote e-exhibition in China. South Coast region ranked in second place as the most appropriate region for e-exhibition. The least ideal region of China for e-exhibition is the Southwest region that is less developed compared to other regions of China. The major practical policies are the enhancement of international cooperation to hold an e-exhibition, use of electronic exhibition capacities (synchronous and asynchronous) and creating social sustainability awareness through the media and social network. The goal of carbon peak and carbon neutralization puts forward higher requirements for the energy and electricity industry development in China. Jing-jin-ji region (short for Beijing, Tianjin and Hebei Provinces) as an important economic growth pole in China, its electric power industry realizing low-carbon transformation can play a good exemplary role nationwide. To clarify the key factors affecting carbon dioxide emission from electric power industry and analyze the relationship between emission and regional economic growth, the paper established decoupling effort model based on LMDI two phases decomposition model and Tapio decoupling index. Firstly, we collected the data of Jing-jin-ji region from 2000 to 2017 and conducted factors decomposition. The results show that: among the ten key factors affecting electric power industry CO2 emission, power generation and consumption ratio, fossil energy consumption coefficient and industrial structure have the most significant effect on CO2 emission reduction, with contribution rates of − 23.27, − 16.50 and − 11.91%, respectively. Per capita GDP and total population are the main positive driving factors, with contribution rates of 132.20% and 23.38%, respectively. Then from the perspective of decoupling relationship, the electric power industry in Jing-jin-ji region has entered a weak decoupling state since the Eleventh Five Year Plan with the decoupling index declined from 0.85 in 2004 to 0.38 in 2017. Excluding the influence of economic development, there are six driving factors to realize the weak decoupling, including (1) Power generation and consumption ratio effect, (2) Industrial structure effect, (3) Industrial power consumption intensity effect, (4) Fossil energy consumption coefficient, (5) Thermal power proportion effect and (6) Fossil energy power generation structure effect, in which the decoupling degree decreases in turn. The total population effect, transmission and distribution loss effect and resident power consumption intensity effect have not achieved decoupling status. At last, based on the model calculation results, we put forward suggestions to promote the low-carbon development of power industry in Jing-jin-ji region, for example, accelerate industrial structure upgrading and the adjustment of power generation structure; Strengthen electricity demand side management; Promote the construction of ultra-high voltage and smart grid as a whole. The Grand Canal of China, as a traffic artery in ancient China, has exerted profound influence on the development of the cities, towns and rural settlements along it. Now, with China's rapid urbanization, numerous settlements along the canal are confronted with problems like slow cognition of the cultural heritage, loss of the local culture and damage of historical relics. Hence, research on the protection and updating of the settlement space along the canal is in urgent need. This paper, targeting the settlement space along the Grand Canal Tianjin Section, adopts such research methods as the Historical GIS analytical method, the kernel density estimation method and the average nearest-neighbor method to quantitatively analyze the evolution stage and distribution characteristics of the settlement space along the Grand Canal Tianjin Section from the perspective of cultural relics to reveal the in-situ rules of evolution of the settlement space. The research result indicates that the spatial-temporal evolution of the settlement space can be divided into five such periods of the settlements along the canal as the pre-canal period, the rudimentary period, the development period, the mature period and the transformation period. Each period features different cultural relics and settlement distribution patterns. The research shows that the natural geographical environment, the grain transportation projects and management systems, the wasteland opening, grain growing and military defense policies, the agricultural, commercial and economic growth and the migration and folk culture are the influencing factors of the spatial evolution of the settlement space along the Grand Canal Tianjin Section. The port is the logistics centre for modern commodity gathering and scheduling transportation, and its efficiency will affect the competitiveness of all enterprises in the supply chain and the development of related industries. This paper aims to study the effect evaluation and optimization model of coastal port logistics supply chain (LSC). For this, based on the supply chain operation reference model (SCOR), the paper establishes the effect evaluation model of coastal port LSC. Then, taking Tianjin Port as an example, it applies the principal component analysis (PCA) to compare and analyse the effects of its LSC horizontally and vertically. The research results show that the gap in the LSC between China's ports is significant; Tianjin Port is limited by the software management level within the port, so its overall LSC has a low effect, but the development space is huge; it should optimize the supply chain model from four aspects such as strengthening the construction of the collection and distribution network and improving container throughput etc. This shall expand the theoretical and empirical research results of the coastal port LSC, and provide an important reference for the development of China's coastal port LSC. Recognition and understanding of ship motion patterns have excellent application value for ship navigation and maritime supervision, i.e., route planning and maritime risk assessment. This paper proposes a semantic recognition method for ship motion patterns entering and leavingport based on a probabilistic topic model. The method enables the discovery of ship motion patterns from a large amount of trajectory data in an unsupervised manner and makes the results more interpretable. The method includes three modules: trajectory preprocessing, semantic process, and knowledge discovery. Firstly, based on the activity types and characteristics of ships in the harbor waters, we propose a multi-criteria ship motion state recognition and voyage division algorithm (McSMSRVD), and ship trajectory is divided into three sub-trajectories: hoteling, maneuvering, and normal-speed sailing. Secondly, considering the influence of port traffic rules on ship motion, the semantic transformation and enrichment of port traffic rules and ship location, course, and speed are combined to construct the trajectory text document. Ship motion patterns hidden in the trajectory document set are recognized using the Latent Dirichlet allocation (LDA) topic model. Meanwhile, topic coherence and topic correlation metrics are introduced to optimize the number of topics. Thirdly, a visualization platform based on ArcGIS and Electronic Navigational Charts (ENCs) is designed to analyze the knowledge of ship motion patterns. Finally, the Tianjin port in northern China is used as the experimental object, and the results show that the method is able to identify 17 representative inbound and outbound motion patterns from AIS data and discover the ship motion details in each pattern. Natural disaster risk assessment is of great significance to increasingly severe disaster prevention and mitigation work. However, the method of risk assessment for multi-disaster is still a difficult problem. In this paper, a novel multi-disaster risk assessment framework based on multi-dimensional correlation analysis is proposed, which combines numerical correlation, geographic correlation and multi-disaster correlation, from a more comprehensive point of view to give a reasonable multi-disaster risk assessment. Firstly, in the perspective of numerical correlation, gray correlation method is used to quantify and rank impact factors system data of natural disasters. Then, the factor detection module of geographic detector is used to detect the driving force of factors, which distributes the weights, based on the geographic correlation view. Finally, combining with above results, a multi-disaster coupling risk assessment model (MRAM) is established, which focus on multi-disaster correlation, to assess the integrated multi-disaster risk. The multi-disaster risk assessment framework is applied to evaluate the integrated risk of multiple natural disasters like flood, earthquake and storm surge in Tianjin City, China. The integrated risk is compared with the history natural disasters intensity and the risk results obtained by TOPSIS (Technique for Order Preference by Similarity to an Ideal Solution), which shows that the MRAM proposed is more reasonable to reflect the risk distribution. Furthermore, the framework is expected to be extended to multi-disaster risk assessment in other areas and contribute to building good disaster prevention and mitigation system. In recent years, the prohibition of trucks which could cause environmental pollution on urban roads has become widespread in China. However, some truck restriction policies might lead to a reduction in logistics transportation efficiency. With the help of big data, technology companies have developed many truck applications, such as HCB, truck home, and truck help, to provide the drivers available traffic information. In this context, this paper put forward a truck path optimization model considering environmental impact (TPOM-EI), which is solved by a heuristic algorithm—ant colony optimization (ACO) algorithm. Most previous studies focused on unilateral benefits rather than overall benefits; this paper aims to propose a path optimization model based on real-time minimization of social and transportation costs. Finally, data of Xiqing Economic and Technological Development Zone in Tianjin city (XQ-EDZ) have been used to demonstrate the applicability of the proposed algorithm. The results show that logistics truck path has a huge impact on social costs, and real-time activities in various areas will also change the path of a truck. Demand-side management (DSM) increases the complexity of forecasting environment, which makes traditional forecasting methods difficult to meet the firm's need for predictive accuracy. Since deep learning can comprehensively consider various factors to improve prediction results, this paper improves the deep belief network from three aspects of input data, model and performance, and uses it to solve the short-term load forecasting problem in DSM. In the data optimization stage, the Hankel matrix is constructed to increase the input weight of DSM data, and the gray relational analysis is used to select strongly correlated data from the data set. In the model optimization stage, the Gauss-Bernoulli restricted Boltzmann machine is used as the first restricted Boltzmann machine of the deep network to convert the continuity feature of input data into binomial distribution feature. In the performance optimization stage, a pre-training method combining error constraint and unsupervised learning is proposed to provide good initial parameters, and the global fine-tuning of network parameters is realized based on the genetic algorithm. The alluvial plain of many of the world's large rivers is generally an area with concentrated urban distribution and a long history of development. In eastern China, the alluvial plains downstream of large rivers such as the Haihe River are the most densely populated and economically developed regions. Beijing, the capital of China, is located on the Haihe Plain. It is a matter of great significance that the region's capacity for livability and sustainable development be improved. Using the river geomorphic data and historical town information, methods of spatial statistical analysis and historical literature research, this paper analyzes the spatial relationship between the distribution of urban centers and the fluvial geomorphology of the Haihe Plain over more than 2,200 years. The research finds that: first, different levels of cities and towns have led to varying choices regarding the fluvial geomorphic environment. Second, in different periods in which different transportations were dominant, the distribution of cities and towns has adapted to the fluvial geomorphology. In the land transportation period, urban settlements mainly concentrated on the diluvial‐alluvial fans at the foot of the Taihang Mountain; in the inland shipping period, they focused on gathering at the confluence of rivers on the central plain and along the canals; in the period of global trade, Tianjin, a trade center, established itself at the mouth of the Haihe River. Third, humans intend to rebuild water system structures (such as the Grand Canal) in the context of major water conservancy projects in the basin to meet the needs of the expanding regions and towns. The research shows that the urban development of the Haihe Plain should adapt to the natural regional pattern and establish a solution based on respecting the natural conditions of the basin, to make the regional sustainable development more resilient. Based on the demand of vehicle emission research and control, this paper presents the development of a portable vehicle measurement system (PEMS) based on SEMTECH-DS and ELPI+, the vehicle emission tests carried out on actual roads, and the data obtained for the establishment and validation of a vehicle emission model. Based on the results of the vehicle emission test, it was found that vehicle driving conditions (speed, acceleration, vehicle specific power (VSP), etc.) had a significant impact on the pollutant emission rate. In addition, local driving cycles were generated and the frequency distribution of VSP-bin under different cycles was analyzed. Then, through the establishment of an emission rate database, calculation of emission factors and validation of the emission model, a vehicle emission model based on actual road driving conditions was developed by taking VSP as the "surrogate variables". It showed that the emission factor model established in this study could better reflect the vehicle transient emissions on the actual road with high accuracy and local adaptability. Through this study, it could be found that due to the great differences in traffic development modes and vehicle driving conditions in different cities in China, the emission model based on driving conditions was a better choice to carry out the research on vehicle emission in Chinese cities. Compared with directly applying international models or quoting the recommended values of relevant macroscopic guidelines, the emission factor model established in this study, using actual driving conditions, could better reflect the vehicle transient emissions on the actual road with high accuracy and local adaptability. In addition, due to the rapid development of China's urban traffic and the rapid change of driving conditions, it was of great significance to regularly update China's urban conditions to improve the accuracy of the model, no matter which model was chosen. Taking China as an example, this paper aims to design a path to reduce haze pollution in newly industrialized countries. Combined the principles of efficiency and equity, this study develops a Game Cross Equity Fixed Cost Allocation Model (Game-EFCAM) to optimize provincial PM2.5 reduction targets and put forward haze reduction paths. The main results are as follows: (1) Among the three egalitarian principles, pay-ability egalitarianism is the fairest, which serves as the convergence principle of Game-EFCAM. (2) The "two mountains and two rivers" area has the largest PM2.5 emission quotas, while the provinces in western China have small PM2.5 emission quotas. In addition, the distributions of PM2.5 emission quotas per unit of population, per unit of gross domestic product, and per unit of area all show significant regional clustering. (3) Shandong and Hebei have the largest amount of PM2.5 emission reduction requirements, while Tianjin and Hainan have the smallest. Xinjiang and Beijing have the largest PM2.5 reduction pressure indexes, while Tianjin and Shanghai have the smallest. This study not only helps China optimize provincial PM2.5 reduction goals, but the proposed allocation method is also applicable to the overall planning of national resources utilization, and provides a reference to newly industrialized countries of haze reduction. European, American, and Japanese debates on public housing served as models for those in modern China, and Chinese scholars and professionals, with the support of the KMT (Kuomintang), developed public housing as a sign of innovation in both societal reform and building typology. Using the under-researched case of Tianjin's public housing during the so-called Nanjing Decade (1928–1937) and then again during the Japanese Occupation (1937–1945) as case studies, the paper first explores how journals, books, and foreign-trained Chinese scholars introduced the concept of public housing to China. It then examines five public housing projects that municipal authorities developed for Tianjin, two in the Nanjing Decade and three during the Japanese Occupation. Analysing the sites, architectural designs, and management rules of these projects, the paper argues that the projects in the Nanjing Decade (both planned and realized) mostly targeted poor families, serving to simultaneously solve housing problems, reform society, and police the poor; while the projects during the Japanese Occupation benefited high-income people or the Japanese, and did not play a role in the relief of the local poor, who suffered most from the housing shortage. Intensive energy penalty caused by CO2 separation process is a critical obstacle for retrofitting power plant with carbon capture technology. Therefore, the concept of utilizing solar energy to assist solvent regeneration for post-combustion carbon capture power plant is proposed recently as a promising pathway to compensate the efficiency reduction derived from CO2 capture process. However, the feasibility of solar-assisted post-combustion technologies largely depends on the types of CO2 absorbent, categories of solar thermal collectors, areas of solar field, and the integration of thermal energy storage system. Therefore, this paper conducts a comparative analysis on monoethanolamine-based and NH3-based solar-assisted post-combustion power plants employing two types of solar collectors, i.e the vacuum tube and the parabolic through collector, with climate data of Tianjin City, China. Levelized costs of electricity and cost of CO2 removed are comparatively studied for both solar-assisted post-combustion configurations. Results show that the proposed solar-assisted post-combustion configurations are economically viable when the price of vacuum tube is lower than 86.64 $/m2 and 117.29 $/m² for the monoethanolamine-based and NH3-based solar-assisted postcombustion power plant, respectively. Meanwhile, the price of parabolic through collector should be less than 111.12 $/m² for the monoethanolamine-based and 114.51 $/m² for the NH3-based solar-assisted post-combustion power plant. It is indicated that employing the vacuum tube for chilled NH3-based solar-assisted post-combustion power plant offers a promising approach to reduce the energy penalty with attractive economic performance. The regeneration of stock land has gradually occupied the mainstream of China's urban development. In order to cope with the inherent complexity of land property rights and transaction costs in stock land regeneration, relevant urban policies need to play a necessary guiding role. Taking the downtown area of Tianjin as an example, this paper discusses the interaction between spatial regeneration and policy change of stock industrial land. Firstly, a spatial database is constructed through multi-party research to quantitatively describe the spatial and temporal evolution of the stock industrial land since 1995. Secondly, the relevant urban policies since 1979 are sorted out, and the characteristics of policy changes are evaluated and analyzed. Finally, through comparative studies, it is confirmed that the regeneration rate of stock industrial land is affected by policy change, and the speed of policy impact is subject to the policies' inherent characteristics, namely, "guiding policy" or "regulating policy." Novel porcine circovirus type 3 (PCV3), first identified in the United States, has been detected in many other countries. Porcine circovirus is associated with postweaning multisystemic wasting syndrome, reproductive failure, congenital tremors, and other clinical symptoms. In this study, we established a double polymerase chain reaction assay for detecting both porcine circovirus type 2 (PCV2) and PCV3. This is the first study to detect and characterize the PCV3 genome in the Tianjin region of North China. We collected a total of 169 tissue samples from seven farms between 2016 and 2018. The PCV3-positive rate of all tissue samples was 37.3% (63/169) and the rate of PCV2 and PCV3 coinfection was 14.8% (25/169). PCV2 and PCV3 coinfections with more serious clinical symptoms were found in only three farms. We sequenced three PCV3 strains selected from tissue samples that were positively identified. The complete genome sequences of the three strains shared 97.6--99.4% nucleotide identities with the PCV3 strains in GenBank. Our results showed the extent of PCV3's spread in Tianjin, and the need to further study PCV3's pathobiology, epidemiology, isolation, and coinfection. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper reports an investigation of homebuyers and the influence of local social capital (LSC) on their housing decisions. We adopt a housing search model and predict the following two effects of LSC: a homebuyer with more social capital in a given location will have a higher propensity to relocate in that location and will be able to secure a housing transaction at a more favourable price in that location. Using data from the owner-occupied housing market in Tianjin, China, we find that LSC tends to inhibit homebuyers from moving far from their original neighbourhoods. LSC also helps homebuyers purchase their housing units at an average price that is 7% lower than the prices paid by those with less LSC when relocating within their original neighbourhoods and 3% lower if they relocate outside of their original neighbourhoods but within the same general location. Constructed wetlands (CWs) are widely used for wastewater treatment, but may also be sources of greenhouse gas (GHG). This study focuses on comparing the GHG emissions from a vertical flow constructed wetland (VFCW) and a horizontal flow constructed wetland (HFCW) in the city of Tianjin, China. Two methods are used in this paper to estimate the indirect and direct GHG emissions. It is found that the VFCW emits 0.09, 1.34, and 3.31 kg equivalent CO2 (CO2 Eq.) to remove 1.00m³ wastewater, 1.00 kg COD, and 1.00 kg BOD in the studied life cycle, respectively, in contrast to 0.18, 2.10, and 5.42 kg CO2 Eq. for the HFCW. The results indicate that the adoption of VFCW is a more effective option with respect to GHG emissions when treating the same amount of pollutants. In addition, the operation phase which includes GHG emissions from water treatment process and energy consumption for pump dominates the GHG emissions. For different kinds of GHG from CWs, CO2 dominates the influence on climate change. The CH4 and N2O emissions should also deserve more attention due to their greater global warming potential. This paper further suggests that GHG emissions can be mitigated in the design, construction, and operation stages through some feasible measures. It would reduce GHG emissions in CWs by adopting hybrid CW system (e.g. HF-VF or VF-HF) or choosing suitable plant species which can mitigate GHG emissions. From the perspective of value-added trade, this paper divides the virtual water consumption and trade in different provinces of China into five major paths according to the input-output relationship. In 2012 and 2015, most provinces' water resources were implicitly used in the final products to meet the local demand. In addition, the volume of virtual water trade in the complex domestic value chain is greater than that in the traditional domestic trade value chain and the simple domestic trade value chain. In both years, judging from the sum of virtual water trade volumes in the three major value chains, there is virtual water net inflow in Beijing-Tianjin and the northern, eastern and southern coastal areas, and virtual water net outflow in the northeast, central and northwest areas. ABSTRACT This paper introduces a new way of decomposing regional inequality. It divides the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei metropolitan region into three sets of districts in terms of the urban-rural resource flows: urban, peri-urban, and peripheral areas. Unlike the administrative divisions, these three sets of districts show how resource flows and agglomerates at the regional level. The paper decomposes regional inequality according to the three sets of districts. The paper's findings show that regional inequality decreased between 1990 and 1994, after which it remained steady. The study, for the first time, brings peri-urban areas into a regional decomposition analysis, and contributes to the understanding of urban-rural resource flows and inequality changes at the regional level. Purpose - The purpose of this paper is to develop a model to analyze the interactions among the competitiveness factors of the real estate industry on the basis of Porter's Diamond Model. The model provides insights into the relationship between these factors in the context of the Beijing and Tianjin real estate industries. Design/methodology/approach - Based on Porter's Diamond Model, this paper establishes the competitiveness factors model and divides the factors into four key categories. (i.e. productivity element, demand constraint, the strategy or structure of relevant and supportive industry and corporation, and horizontal competition). After relevant indices are picked up in each category, the paper utilizes structural equation modeling to analyze the contribution of each factor on competitiveness of real estate industry. Data are collected from Beijing and Tianjin in China and the model is practiced in the context of the real estate industry of the two cities. Findings - Supported by empirical evidence, this study finds out that related industries have the most significant influence on competitiveness of real estate industry and the second important is demand factors. Based on these, four pieces of suggestion are given to improve the competitiveness of real estate industry combining with the condition of Beijing and Tianjin in this paper. Originality/value - This research builds a conceptual model based on Porter's Diamond model to provide a much more comprehensive understanding of the interactions between competitiveness factors of real estate industry, and introduces structural equation modeling to quantitatively analyze the contribution of each factor to competitiveness. For this, based on the supply chain operation reference model (SCOR), the paper establishes the effect evaluation model of coastal port LSC. Then, taking Tianjin Port as an example, it applies the principal component analysis (PCA) to compare and analyse the effects of its LSC horizontally and vertically. The research results show that the gap in the LSC between China's ports is significant; Tianjin Port is limited by the software management level within the port, so its overall LSC has a low effect, but the development space is huge; it should optimize the supply chain model from four aspects such as strengthening the construction of the collection and distribution network and improving container throughput etc. This shall expand the theoretical and empirical research results of the coastal port LSC, and provide an important reference for the development of China's coastal port LSC. This paper investigates tone sandhi phenomena in the Chinese dialect of Tianjin, which are noteworthy for the rule application directionalities observed in tri-tonal strings. The rule application directionalities appear to be ungoverned, as none of the principles proposed to date that may contribute to determining directionalities can account for them. Based on the constraint-based theory of OT, this paper shows that the rule operation directionalities in Tianjin are by no means ungoverned. Normally tone sandhi applies from left to right for identity reasons. This is captured by the OO-faithfulness constraint I dent-BO T, which requires identity between prosodically related outputs. The left-to-right directionality is sacrificed only when it would result in output forms that involve marked sequences or toneme deletion at the prominent edge of a tone, which are forbidden by the markedness constraint OCP-T and the positional IO-faithfulness constraint M ax-IO-t-R, respectively. Thus the rule application directionalities in Tianjin are naturally predicted by the interaction of I dent-BO t, OCP-T, and M ax-IO-t-R, where I dent-BO t must be dominated by the latter two constraints. Design days are the fundamental parameters for design cooling load calculations. At present, the coincidence and coupling relationship of meteorological elements are ignored by the design-day selection methods provided in the current standards, which results in conservative and unreasonable designs. This research proposes a method of selecting design days for design cooling load calculation that considers the coincidence and correlation of meteorological elements. First, a joint distribution function is constructed; on this basis, the coincident near-extreme meteorological parameters are selected. Then three meteorological elements from a 30-year meteorological record are integrated into one single normalization parameter. Finally, a design day reflective of the variation trend of near-extreme climate conditions is selected from the meteorological record. This paper uses Tianjin in China as an example to generate the research design day. It was found that the outdoor non-guaranteed rate of the research design day is roughly consistent with the corresponding indoor thermal environment risk level. Compared with the standard Chinese design day, the peak values of the research design day are reduced effectively, and the gap between the indoor thermal environment risk level and the outdoor non-guaranteed rate is narrowed. Emergency decision-making is vital for nations or communities because it increases emergency management's effectiveness and legitimacy, which in turn greatly minimizes environmental damage, fatalities, and economic loss. The evaluation of emergency judgements must take into account significant inaccuracy, fuzzyness, and ambiguity. While high risk and uncertainty are frequently characteristics of emergency decision-making (EDM) circumstances. The current EDM methodologies do not take into account the psychological behavior of the decision makers in addition to the various emergency situations and the various responses. In this paper, we presented a new method based on a Complex Probabilistic Hesitant Fuzzy Soft Set (CPHFSS) as represented by membership in 2-D with hesitant probability. The idea that is being put forth captures the ambiguity and takes into account emergency situations while also taking into account the psychological state of the decision-makers involved in the EDM procedure. The introduction of a new score function for the CPHFSS serves as the second objective of this paper, which is to address a number of comparability issues. We examine a novel family of hybrid operators for CPHFSS that utilize numerous independent variables as a solution to these unforeseen issues. The group decision-making strategy and EDAS technique are then suggested employing these operators. Background: During the Omicron pandemic, clinical first-line nurses played a crucial role in healthcare. Their innovative behavior enhanced the quality of nursing and served as a vital factor in driving the sustainable development of the nursing discipline and healthcare industry. Many previous studies have confirmed the significance of nurses' innovative behavior worldwide. However, the correlations among innovative behaviors, organizational innovation climate, self-transcendence, and their mediating roles in Chinese clinical first-line nurses need further research. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted, and the quality reporting conformed to the STROBE Checklist. From March 2022 to February 2023, a convenience sample of 1,058 Chinese clinical first-line nurses was recruited from seven tertiary grade-A hospitals of Tianjin city in Northern China. The Demographic Characteristics Questionnaire, Nurse Innovative Behavior Scale (NIBS), Nurse Organizational Innovation Climate Scale, and the Self-Transcendence Scale were used. The data was analyzed using descriptive statistics, correlation, and process plug-in mediation effect analyses. Results: The total scores of innovative behavior, organizational innovation climate, and self-transcendence were 33.19 ± 6.71, 68.88 ± 12.76, and 41.25 ± 7.83, respectively. Innovative behavior was positively correlated with the organizational innovation climate (r = 0.583, p < 0.01) and self-transcendence (r = 0.635, p < 0.01). Self-transcendence partially mediated mediating role between innovative behavior and organizational innovation climate, accounting for 41.7%. Conclusion: The innovative behavior, organizational innovation climate, and self-transcendence among the first-line nurses during the Omicron pandemic were relatively moderate, which needs improving. Organizational innovation climate can directly affect the innovative behavior among Chinese clinical first-line nurses and indirectly through the mediating role of self-transcendence. It is recommended that nursing managers adjust their management strategies and techniques based on the unique characteristics of nurses during the pandemic. This includes fostering a positive and inclusive environment for organizational innovation, nurturing nurses' motivation and awareness for innovation, enhancing their ability to gather information effectively, overcoming negative emotions resulting from the pandemic, and promoting personal growth. To investigate the optical characteristics and sources of brown carbon (BrC) in North China, where the atmospheric aerosol loadings are high and have severe impacts on Earth's climate system, we collected fine aerosols (PM 2.5) at an urban site in Tianjin over a 1-year period. We measured the ultraviolet (UV) light absorption and excitation emission matrix (EEM) fluorescence of the water-soluble BrC (WSBrC) and the water-insoluble but methanol-soluble BrC (WI-MSBrC) in the PM 2.5 using a three-dimensional fluorescence spectrometer. The average light absorption efficiency of both WSBrC (Abs365, WSBrC) and WI-MSBrC (Abs365, WI-MSBrC) at 365 nm was found to be highest in winter (10.4 ± 6.76 and 10.0 ± 5.13 Mm-1 , respectively) and distinct from season to season. The averages of the fluorescence index (FI) and the biological index (BIX) of WSBrC were lower in summer than in the other seasons and opposite to that of the humification index (HIX), which implied that the secondary formation and further chemical processing of aerosols were more intensive during the summer period than in the other seasons. However, in winter, the higher HIX together with the higher FI and BIX of WI-MSBrC suggested that the BrC loading was mainly influenced by primary emissions from biomass burning and coal combustion. Based on the EEM, the types of fluorophores in WSBrC were divided into humic-like substances (HULIS), including low-oxygenated and high-oxygenated species and protein-like compounds (PLOM), though mostly PLOM in the WI-MSBrC. The direct radiation absorption by both WSBrC and WI-MSBrC in the range of 300–400 nm accounted for ∼ 40 % of that (SFEAbs , 4.97 ± 2.71 and 7.58 ± 5.75 Wg-1 , respectively) in the range 300–700 nm. Despite its tremendous success, the Chinese Economy is still characterized and controlled by a recurring process of 5 year planning. This comprehensive National planning program occurs at all levels of the Chinese government, educational system and state owned companies. This paper reports on a study that was made in preparation for the 13th 5 year Plan for the Smart City component of the upcoming city of Tianjin. The objective of this study was to identify problems in informatization, automation and centralization of command and control, so that these could be solved as part of the 5 year plan. The study followed a three-stage mixed-method approach. First, questionnaires were used to assess the sate of development of the smart city features in the different departments of the city government. Second, the study organized thematic joint development groups consisting of expert representatives from different city's departments and units. Third, results of questionnaires and thematic joint development discussions were analyzed in departmental focus groups to clarify and specify the problems and assess proposed solutions and viability of those solutions. This paper analyses the findings of this three-stage process and offers a classification of the identified problems, an integrative conceptual representation of these and a discussion of the importance of this identification in the overall planning process. The results and discussion are of particular importance in China for the next round of 5 year planning that will take place in 2020. However the meaning of the findings of this applied research process are transferable to any smart city planning process all over the world as the majority of the issues discussed are generic. Biogrouting, which is a new method for soil improvement, was used in an attempt to cement a type of hydraulic fill fine sands (called black sands) in reclamation projects in Tianjin, China, to form a working layer for mechanical equipment. Several factors influencing biogrouting with regard to cementing solution, including injection frequency, reaction time, concentration, and flow rate, were controlled to prepare black sand columns. This paper reports on an investigation of bacterial fixation, calcium ion utilization, and calcium carbonate distributions of biogrouted sand specimens. At the end of the tests, the geotechnical performances of the sand specimens were determined. The results showed that the biogrouting method effectively solidified black sands, by increasing the unconfined compressive strength of a sand column to 1.91 MPa and reducing the permeability coefficient by three orders of magnitude. A relationship between the unconfined compressive strengths and calcium carbonate contents was put forward, in addition to a relationship between the permeability coefficients and the calcium carbonate contents. According to the experimental results, some reasonable suggestions regarding the application of biogrouting to the consolidation of hydraulic fill fine sands in reclamation projects were proposed. The settlement space along China's Grand Canal composes an important part of the Canal heritage, has a close bearing on the production and life of the residents there, nourishes rich culture and wisdom and boasts vital value of conservation and inheritance. Due to China's rapid urbanization and industrialization, the settlements along the canal have been destroyed to some extent and their in-site characteristics urgently need excavation and conservation. Through field investigation, space syntax and GIS analysis, this paper performs quantitative analysis of the in-site characteristics of 18 typical rural settlements there. The findings show that: (1) The settlement space of industry dominant type for commerce and trade is comparatively dynamic and the capacity of topology and integration and the attractive force of the settlement center are stronger. (2) The dynamic scope of the citizens' everyday traveling in the settlements has the closest correlation with the data of public-service facilities. (3) The settlements along the canal boast multiple, causal and blended in-site phenotype. The research findings provide new standards to categorize the settlements along China's Grand Canal, paths and methods to explore the characteristics of the settlements and new cognitive perspectives to conserve and renew the settlements along China's Grand Canal Tianjin Section. In recent years, the occurrence and frequency of haze are constantly increasing, severely threatening people's daily lives and health and bringing enormous losses to the economy. To this end, we used cluster analysis and spatial autocorrelation methods to discuss the spatial and temporal distribution characteristics of severe haze in China and to classify regions of China. Furthermore, we analyzed the interaction between haze pollution and the influence of economy and energy structure in 31 provinces in China, providing references for the prevention and treatment of haze pollution. The processed data mainly include API, meteorological station data, and PM 2.5 concentration distribution vector graph. The results show the yearly haze pattern from 2008 to 2012, and present a strong pattern of pollution concentrated around Beijing–Tianjin, the Yangtze River Delta, southwest China, and central China. The Computable General Equilibrium (CGE) model could capture the full range of interaction and feedback effects among different agents in the economic system. This study analyzes the economic impacts of differentiated carbon reduction targets by using a two-region CGE model in Tianjin Municipal City of China (hereafter “Tianjin”). Firstly, based on a business-as-usual (BaU) scenario and seven proposed carbon reduction scenarios, this paper quantifies the macroeconomic impacts of different carbon reduction targets in both regions, especially the carbon reduction costs and industrial output. Furthermore, several typical industries in Tianjin are chosen to explore how their competitiveness is affected under different carbon allocation scenarios. The results show that compared with the BaU scenario, the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in Tianjin would achieve the highest growth rate if the carbon intensity reduction target is set at 65% in Tianjin whereas 55% in the rest of China (ROC). Meanwhile, residents’ welfare loss in Tianjin will be the largest if carbon intensity reduction target in 2030 is set to be 65% in Tianjin and 75% in ROC. Also, the local pillar industries (including electronic sector and the metal smelting sector) would benefit from the carbon reduction policy, while the paper sector would be negatively influenced. Policy recommendations are raised, in which several factors should be fully considered, including development stages, resource endowments, technical levels and local environmental carrying capacity. The development of rail transit is expected to gather housing and jobs around metro stations to improve the urban spatial structure for sustainable development. However, evaluations of the effects of transit-oriented development (TOD) practices in Chinese cities remain limited. Based on 2019 mobile phone signaling data, this study analyzed the spatial relationship between metro station areas, urban population density, and employment density in Tianjin City, China. Kernel density estimation, the coverage rate of population and employment, and the envelope range density method for rail transit networks were used to describe the spatial relationships between rail transit and the distribution of population and employment. The concentric circle method was used to analyze the spatial variation of residential population density and employment density within the station surrounding areas. Multiple linear regressions, spatial autocorrelation analysis, and geographically weighted regression analysis were established to quantitatively evaluate the effects of metro stations on the residential population density and employment density around the stations. Results show that: (1) population and employment are significantly concentrated along the rail transit area; (2) metro stations within the suburban area, which are roughly 10 km away from the center, have the most significant aggregation effect on population and employment; and (3) employment density and the proportion of residential and commercial lands are the most influential factors in residential population density within the station's surrounding areas. These findings contribute to comprehensive spatial analysis on population and employment densities around metro stations and provide scientific support for sustainable urban development. This work aims to investigate a multimodal feeder plan for a metro terminal station in the suburbs, where fixed-route transit, flex-route feeder transit (FRFT), shared bike, online car-hailing, and private cars are included. A slack arrival strategy, which relaxes the schedule constraints of a checkpoint but does not affect the bus operating cycle, is proposed to deal with the real-time demand insertion (RDI) problem in FRFT. A dynamic optimization model that is based on slack arrival strategy, which considers penalty time costs, is established to solve rejection decisions and route modification problems in RDI. Then, a method for a multimodal feeder plan is proposed, where FRFT is set for the growing number of commuters and factories, and fixed-route transit is set for mature communities with large passenger demand. A bilevel programming model is built, in which the upper-level multimodal feeder plan model is constructed by comprehensively considering the total travel cost of passengers and the bus profit (ticket income minus operational cost). The lower level is a multimode traffic assignment model. A genetic algorithm (GA) is adopted in the concrete optimization solution. The proposed method is validated through a sample application to Tianjin City, China. Compared with the method without public transit (PT) routes, the method with fixed routes, and the method with conventional flex-route transit in growing communities and factories, the total travel cost is reduced by 9.14%, 5.65%, and 3.86%, respectively. The bus profit increased by 34.67%, 56.89%, and 38.68%, respectively. In addition, the effectiveness of policies for FRFT is verified by evaluating the performance of a multimodal feeder plan under various advanced reservation rates. The feeder problem in a metro terminal station in the suburbs could be solved, and the development of the increasing number of commuters and factories could be ensured with the proposed method.
