We provide return level data used for the assessement coastal hazards of Medicanes in the upcoming article "Coastal hazards of tropical-like cyclones over the Mediterranean Sea". For both significant wave height at 20m depth and coastal sea surface elevation, return levels are provided at 10 year (RLs_10year.mat) and 100 year (RLs_100year.mat) return periods. Each .mat file, contains the following variables: - latitude/longitude: coastal point for the Mediterranean basin and islands within it; Dim = [7784,1] - elev_Rea,Hs_Rea: return levels computed for the present climate; Dim = [7784,1] - elev_Hist, elev_Rcp85, Hs_Hist, Hs_Rcp85:return levels computed for the historical asnd projected climate (from the 20 GCMs model used, see article); Dim = [7784,20]

Majorca has the adequate size to develop substantial sea breezes during the warm season, mainly along its long bays, that converge in the interior of the island. This low-level convergence acts as an effective triggering mechanism for thunderstorm development in situations of a convectively unstable air mass. The dependence of this triggering mechanism (intensity and location) on the large-scale flow and the possible role of the prominent orography of the island are two issues of scientific relevance and also of great practical interest for local forecasters. With the aim of analyzing how the synoptic wind interacts with the sea breeze, thirty-two different atmospheric scenarios (plus the non-orographic counterparts) were simulated with the MM5 model at 1 km grid resolution. Results confirm a great sensitivity of the early afternoon breeze convergence and associated convection on the direction of the large-scale flow. The position and extent of the convective area are also strongly conditioned by the orography. The convection is basically modulated by the sea breeze characteristics for the cases with weak synoptic wind intensity, while it is largely activated by the orographic forcing for the cases with higher wind intensity.

Las cuencas hidrológicas situadas en zonas de clima mediterráneo sufren, de ma-nera recurrente, largos periodos de sequía y eventos extremos de precipitación, lle-gando incluso a producirse episodios de inundación durante épocas secas. Tanto la gestión de los recursos hídricos como del riesgo de inundación son dos de los gran-des retos actuales. El objetivo del proyecto PGRI-EPM ha sido la optimización de las metodologías que actualmente se utilizan en las diferentes zonas de la Euroregión Pirineos-Mediterráneo para conservar al máximo los recursos hídricos en episodios extremos a la vez que se minimiza el riesgo de inundación, mediante una evaluación conjunta global. La metodología propuesta utiliza la predicción meteorológica local como punto de partida de la predicción hidrológica, que a su vez alimentará las he-rramientas de modelización hidráulica. Esta metodología ha sido calibrada y vali-dada en dos cuencas piloto (Agly, Midi-Pyrénées; La Muga, Catalunya) mediante eventos históricos de inundación. La reconstrucción de los eventos permitió analizar y proponer gestiones alternativas a las realizadas con el fin de minimizar el riesgo de inundación y maximizar los recursos hídricos.

[ES]Los nuevos escenarios regionales de cambio climático para España, desarrollados en el marco del Plan Nacional de Adaptación al Cambio Climático (PNACC) y denominados “Escenarios-PNACC 2012”, incorporan distintas proyecciones realizadas de forma coordinada con técnicas dinámicas y estadísticas, a partir de los escenarios globales de cambio climático del IPCC-AR4 (CMIP3). En particular, las proyecciones estadísticas han sido realizadas utilizando tanto datos interpolados en rejilla (considerando la rejilla de observaciones Spain02, de 20km de resolución), como datos puntuales en cientos de localidades de la red de observatorios de AEMET. Estas proyecciones, así como las diversas metodologías aplicadas, han sido desarrolladas por distintos grupos en el marco del proyecto ESTCENA (acción estratégica del Ministerio de Medio Ambiente, 2009-2011), e incluyen también algunas de las proyecciones realizadas por AEMET. El resultado es un conjunto homogéneo de datos con formato común que recoge las distintas fuentes de incertidumbre (escenarios, modelos globales, y técnicas de regionalización) que es necesario considerar en los distintos estudios de impacto que se lleven a cabo. En este trabajo, se describe el conjunto de escenarios resultante y se presenta un primer análisis de resultados. [EN]A new set of regional climate change scenarios for Spain “Escenarios-PNACC 2012“ has been developed in the framework of the coordinated program “Plan Nacional de Adaptación al Cambio Climático (PNACC)“. This dataset includes regional projections produced applying both statisticaland dynamical techniqes to the global simulations from IPCC-AR4 (CMIP3). In particular, the projections with statistical downscaling techniques have been produced using grids of interpolated observation (Spain02, at a 20km resolution) as well as local observations in a network of hundreds of stations from AEMET. These projections and methodologies have been developed by different national research groups within the project ESTCENA (acción estratégica del Ministerio de Medio Ambiente, 2009-2011), including also some of the projections developed by AEMET. The result is a homogeneous dataset which sample the different sources of uncertainty (scenarios, global models, ad statistical downscaling techniques), allowing for an appropriate analysis of impacts. In this work we describe the resulting ensemble and show a preliminary analysis of the results. Changes in the dynamics of sediment transport in a Mediterranean lake (sediment fluidization events) are linked to atmospheric circulations patterns (trough monthly precipitation). In the basins of Lake Banyoles, located in the northeast of Spain, water enters mainly through subterranean springs, and associated fluctuations in the vertical migration of sediment distribution (fluidization events) present episodic behavior as a result of episodic rainfall in the area. The initiation of the fluidization events takes place when the monthly rainfall is ∼2.7 times greater than the mean monthly rainfall of the rainiest months in the area, especially in spring (April and May), October, and December. The duration of these events is found to be well correlated with the accumulated rainfall of the preceding 10 months before the process initiation. The rainfall, in turn, is mainly associated with six atmospheric circulation patterns among the 19 fundamental circulations that emerged in an earlier study focused on significant rainfall days in Mediterranean Spain. Among them, accentuated surface lows over the northeast of Spain, general northeasterly winds by low pressure centered to the east of Balearic Islands and short baroclinic waves over the Iberian Peninsula, with easterly flows over the northeastern coast of Spain, are found the most relevant atmospheric circulations that drive heavy rainfall events

[ES]A principios de 2003 se creó la Red Ibérica MM5, una iniciativa conjunta de grupos de investigación básica y aplicada de España y Portugal, coordinada desde la Universitat de les Illes Balears, cuyo objetivo es estimular y canalizar la colaboración entre los diferentes grupos que aplican el modelo numérico de simulación atmosférica MM5 . La red temática se materializa en la celebración de reuniones periódicas y en la difusión de todo tipo de conocimientos, metodologías, interfaces y aplicaciones propias a través de su página web (http://redibericamm5.uib.es). Aprovechando el excelente foro que supone el 5º Encuentro Hispano-Luso de Meteorología, se describirán las características concretas de la red, los principales logros conseguidos, y se invitará a todos los grupos o individuos interesados en contribuir o beneficiarse de sus actividades a integrarse en ella. [EN]At the beginning of 2003 it was created the MM5 Iberic Network, a joint project of basic and applied research groups from Spain and Portugal, coordinated from the University of the Balearic Islands, with the aim of enhancing the collaboration among the groups that are currently applying the MM5 atmospheric numerical model. The network activities are based on periodical meetings and the dissemination in its web page http://redibericamm5.uib.es) of any new knowledge, technique, interface or application developed by the groups. Taking advantage of the 5º Encuentro Hispano-Luso de Meteorología, we will describe the specific characteristics of the MM5 Iberic Network and its main achievements. Moreover, all groups or individuals interested in contributing or benefiting from the activities developed by the network will be invited to become a member of it.

A high resolution climatology of yearly precipitation for Alpine area has been provided by Frei and Schär (1998). Intense precipitation events are common on the SE slopes of the Alps. Two pronounced maxima of accumulated precipitation appear in SE Alps: the Julian Alps in W Slovenia and NE Italy's Friuli-Venezia Giulia region, and in W Croatia in the Dinaric Alpine region. Mesoscale intensification of the MAP SOP heavy precipitation occurred on 4 October 1999 along the border of Slovenia and western part of Croatia is explained. Large amount of rain was caused at the frontal zone modified by the convergence between the southerly winds associated with the Alpine lee cyclogenesis and the northerlies blowing around the eastern flank of the Alps after the process of splitting currents on the north Alpine orographic blocking. This convergence was responsible for the formation of rainband with convectively unstable air advected by the warm and humid current from the Mediterranean. The numerical results of HRID with pseudotemps of ALADIN/LACE mesoscale prognostic model and TEMP messages for 3-hourly time intervals in Zagreb and 6-hourly intervals in Ljubljana and Udine were used for the verification of presented HRID vertical time cross sections. It is shown that the relative forecast error did not exceed 4 percent. Thus, forecast of presented vertical atmospheric structure offers very satisfactory results considering that it was an extraordinary case with a rapid frontal development. It is therefore concluded that the postprocesssing of HRID with ALADIN/LACE forecasting pseudotemps could be successfully used especially in the preparation of nowcasting procedure.

The most famous local winds on Adriatic are bora (bura), jugo (scirocco) and tramontana. The aim of the results presented is to improve the diagnosis and prediction of the bora and scirocco onset and severity. Knowledge of the mesoscale and large scale pressure patterns also increases the forecasting skill for surface winds in the region, especially in hazardous situations. Bora is strong, gusty, northeasterly downslope wind along the eastern Adriatic coast. Although recent bora investigation showed essential differences between bora behaviour in the northern and southern Adriatic, investigation of all severe bora cases reveal the multiscale nature of bora wind: the bora onset, its longevity and severity are closely related to larger mesoscale features, in particular those resulting from the interaction processes of synoptic scale flow with the Alpine massif and bora speed and direction are greatly influenced by local topographic shape. So, when discussing severe bora wind, we have to account that such windstorms are mostly subsynoptic features, strongly influenced by local processes and orography and are, therefore, very difficult to study by regular synoptic network. However, scirocco is mostly dominated by synoptic-scale events and, therefore, is much easily forecasted by larger-scale numerical models. The most severe cases are connected to the southern upper-level airstream over the Adriatic (ahead of a deep upper-level trough) during the presence of a Mediterranean cyclone. Such a situation is favourable for restoring a gradient-like stream, especially over the sea where surface friction is negligible. When severe scirocco situation is lasting for a several days one of the most welknown consequence, except the marine traffic disruption, is an unusual high sea level causing sometimes the flooding of Venice. Tramontana windstorms are especially dangerous for marine traffic because of development of high, ocean&#8211 ; ; ; like waves at the sea surface.
