Objective: To provide healthcare professionals guidance on youth at risk for prolonged recovery and post‐traumatic headache (PTH), and on pharmacologic and non‐pharmacologic management of PTH due to concussion and mild traumatic brain injury. Background: Headache is the most common persistent post‐concussive symptom affecting 8% of youth for >3 months after concussion. Over the past decade, many studies have explored the treatment of PTH in youth, but there are no established guidelines. Methods: This white paper is based on a synthesis of an updated systematic review of the literature on treatment of PTH and a narrative review of the literature on risk factors for prolonged recovery and health disparities. Results were interpreted by a group of expert providers in PTH in children and adolescents through collaboration of the PTH and pediatric special interest groups of the American Headache Society. Results: Factors that consistently were associated with prolonged recovery from concussion and persistent PTH included female sex, a high number of acute symptoms, and adolescent age. Social determinants of health also likely play an important role in PTH and deserve consideration in the clinical and research settings. A total of 33 studies met the criteria for inclusion in the systematic review of PTH treatment in youth, although most were retrospective and of fair‐to‐poor quality. Treatment strategies included acute and preventive pharmacologic management, procedures, neuro‐modulatory devices, physical therapy, physical activity, and behavioral health support. A collaborative care approach that includes a thoughtful combination of these management strategies is likely most effective. Conclusions: This white paper provides a roadmap for tailoring the treatment of PTH based on factors influencing prolonged headache, the timing of therapies, and therapies with the most evidence for treating PTH in youth. We also highlight research needed for developing more definitive guidelines on PTH management in youth. Adolescent pregnancy and childbearing, remain a widespread health-related problem with potential short and long-term consequences. Comprehensive social, economic, environmental, structural, and cultural factors heavily impact on adolescents' sexual and reproductive health and early pregnancy. Health professionals can play a pivotal role in the prevention of unplanned pregnancy. Improved access to family planning, sexuality education in schools, community-based interventions, and policies contribute greatly to reduce the risk of adolescent pregnancy and the adoption of respectful and responsible sexual behaviour. Additionally, health care professionals can support pregnant adolescents in making decisions under these circumstances and provide adequate health care. This review highlights actions that can guide healthcare professionals in empowering young adolescents to become more aware and capable of making informed decisions about their sexual life, health, and future.

Purpose: This study aims to explore the daily stressors experienced by adolescents with Type 1 diabetes (T1D) and the perceived impact of those stressors on their self‐management and psychological well‐being. Design and Methods: We conducted semistructured in‐depth telephone interviews using a qualitative descriptive approach with 20 adolescents aged 14–17 years with T1D and analyzed subsequent data using thematic analysis. Results: Participants who were non‐Hispanic white made up 85% of the sample, 75% identified as female and mean age was 15 years. The study identified two key themes: "the everyday stress of living with diabetes" and "managing stress and supporting psychological well‐being." Participants described heightened mental load, the impact of daily activities, stress associated with public diabetes management, and added stress due to COVID‐19. Primary mitigation techniques included family support, peer support networks, activity engagement, and personal acceptance of their condition. Practice Implications: We found that there is a compound effect that occurs with balancing daily disease management with normative activities of daily living. These data will help guide the design of new interventions and tailoring of existing interventions. Topics discussed include the mechanisms of nighttime bracing in scoliosis management, the role of self-directed physical activities in supporting spinal health, and the overall outcomes in slowing disease progression with this combined approach.

The concept of presentification finds an important place in clinical models of trauma. In psychotherapy, do “present moment”, focus on the “here and now” and mindfulness refer to the same semantic field? Or is it sufficient to distinguish its contents through the favorable/maladaptive polarity? Are the concepts of “defensive automatism” and of “defensive style” overlapping? Is maladaptive presentation a metahistorical fact? Does adolescence show always behaviors of maladaptive presentification? The brief critical argument presented in this intervention on Luca Degasperi’s (2023) article starts from the need to clarify the epistemological field of the construct of presentification, suggesting an alternative terminological hypothesis to the maladaptive meaning and a socio-cultural recontextualization of the clinical pictures described. BACKGROUND: Since the inception of the Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance System in 1991, all surveys have been conducted in schools, using paper and pencil instruments (PAPI). For the 2019 YRBSS, sites were offered the opportunity to conduct their surveys using electronic data collection. This study aimed to determine whether differences in select metrics existed between students who completed the survey electronically versus using PAPI. METHODS: Thirty risk behaviors were examined in this study. Data completeness, response rates and bivariate comparisons of risk behavior prevalence between administration modes were examined. RESULTS: Twenty‐nine of 30 questions examined had more complete responses among students using electronic surveys. Small differences were found for student and school response rates between modes. Twenty‐five of 30 adolescent risk behaviors showed no mode effect. CONCLUSIONS: Seven of 44 states and DC participated electronically. Because survey data were more complete; school and student response rates were consistent; and minor differences existed in risk behaviors between modes, the acceptability of collecting data electronically was demonstrated. Objectives: Adolescent athletes with a primary anterior glenohumeral dislocations have been shown to have a relatively high incidence of recurrent instability. Evolving evidence on this topic has led to increasing rates of arthroscopic stabilization over the last 2 decades. However, the timing and role of surgery following a single dislocation episode is one of the most controversial topics in orthopaedics. While arthroscopic stabilization is effective in allowing return to play, adolescents have higher rates of subsequent recurrent instability than any other age group. Identifying patients at highest risk of such events postoperatively may facilitate optimized surgical decision-making in this population. The purpose of this study was to identify prognostic factors that are associated with recurrent instability requiring reoperation following arthroscopic Bankart repair in adolescents, with particular attention to the number of dislocations sustained prior to the index procedure. Methods: All patients 12 to 21 years old who had undergone arthroscopic Bankart repair surgery for anterior glenohumeral instability at a pediatric tertiary care hospital between 2000 and 2020 were included. The analysis was conducted using a multivariate Cox proportional hazards model, with percentage of patients with recurrent instability requiring a re-operation evaluated in a time-to-event analysis as the outcome. The effects from the Cox model were expressed as the hazard ratio (HR). All tests were 2-sided, with an alpha level of.05. Results: A total of 488 adolescent patients (78% male; mean age: 16.9 +/- 1.98 years) met study criteria, with the most common primary sports consisting of football (n=141, 29%), hockey (n=47, 10%), basketball (n=40, 8%), baseball (n=33, 7%), and lacrosse (n=30, 6%). A total of 270 (55%) athletes participated in contact sports, while 95 (20%) were overhead athletes. Overall, 86 patients (17.6%) required revision stabilization surgery for recurrent instability, with a cumulative risk of 8.8% at 2 years, 16.5% at 5 years, and 20% at 15 years. The revision stabilization procedures occurred at a mean of 31.1 +/- 25.1 months from the index procedure and consisted of open Latarjet (n=42, 49%), revision arthroscopic stabilization (n=24, 28%), or open capsulorraphy (n=20, 23%). Risk factors for recurrent instability requiring revision stabilization included more than 1 dislocation episode prior to the index procedure (2 dislocations: HR=7.4 (2.5-21.6), p=0.0003; 3+ dislocations: HR=10.9 (3.9 to 30.5), p<0.0001), presence of a Hill-Sachs lesion (small Hill-Sachs: HR=2.5 (1.2-5.1), p=0.0114; medium-large Hill-Sachs: HR=4.2 (1.9-9.3), p=0.0004), younger age at the time of the index stabilization procedure (one year decrease in age: HR=1.2 (1.1-1.4), p=0.0015), and participation in contact sports (HR=1.8 (1.1-2.9), p=0.01). Adolescents who had sustained 1 dislocation prior to surgery had a cumulative incidence of revision surgery (3.2%) that was significantly lower than those who had sustained 2 dislocations (24.2%) or 3+ dislocations (33.5%). Conclusions: The number of dislocation episodes prior to index arthroscopic Bankart repair was the strongest risk factor for recurrent instability requiring revision surgery in adolescents with anterior glenohumeral instability, with two dislocation episodes conferring more than 7-fold increased risk compared to those who had just a single dislocation episode preoperatively. Other significant risk factors included the presence of a Hill-Sachs lesion, younger age, and participation in contact sports. These data support consideration for arthroscopic stabilization for adolescents following a single dislocation, especially in younger patients, contact athletes or when a Hill Sachs lesion is present. The ability to compare symbolic numerical magnitudes correlates with children's concurrent and future mathematics achievement. We developed and evaluated a quick timed paper-and-pencil measure that can easily be used, for example in large-scale research, in which children have to cross out the numerically larger of two Arabic one- and two-digit numbers (SYMP Test). We investigated performance on this test in 1,588 primary school children (Grades 1-6) and examined in each grade its associations with mathematics achievement. The SYMP Test had satisfactory test-retest reliability. The SYMP Test showed significant and stable correlations with mathematics achievement for both one-digit and two-digit comparison, across all grades. This replicates the previously observed association between symbolic numerical magnitude processing and mathematics achievement, but extends it by showing that the association is observed in all grades in primary education and occurs for single- as well as multi-digit processing. Children with mathematical learning difficulties performed significantly lower on one-digit comparison and two-digit comparison in all grades. This all suggests satisfactory construct and criterion-related validity of the SYMP Test, which can be used in research, when performing large-scale (intervention) studies, and by practitioners, as screening measure to identify children at risk for mathematical difficulties or dyscalculia. BACKGROUND: Physical therapy modalities are often applied in treatment of neurological conditions in children and adolescents. OBJECTIVE: Evaluation of the methodological quality of research focusing on the application of physical therapy modalities in children and adolescents with neurological conditions. METHODS: Papers published between 2007 and 2018 were included in the review. 149 papers were analyzed and finally 26 studies investigating the use of physical therapy modalities in children and adolescents with neurological conditions were included in the review. Jadad scale (0–5) was used to assess the methodological value of the studies. RESULTS: The mean Jadad score was 1.46 (researcher 1) and 1.38 (researcher 2). A score of 0 was awarded to nine (r1) and eight papers (r2). A score of 5 points was awarded to three (r1) and two papers (r2). CONCLUSION: 1. The evidence showing the effectiveness of the use of physical therapy modalities is mainly of low quality. 2. The Jadad scale is a valuable tool to assess the quality of research, although it does not always reflect the real value in the case children participate in studies. 3. During menarche and adolescence, abnormal uterine bleeding (AUB) may serve as a crucial indicator of a hidden bleeding disorder. When a young woman is suspected of having a bleeding disorder, the obstetrician-gynecologist should collaborate with a hemostasis specialist to arrange the necessary laboratory testing and determine the best course of action. The Italian Society for the Study of Hemostasis and Thrombosis and the Italian Society of Gynecology and Obstetrics jointly offer recommendations on the diagnosis and treatment of AUB. They also suggest diagnostic and therapeutic pathways to decrease diagnostic delay and improve treatment effectiveness and safety.

Children are defined as hypertensive when their blood pressure values equal or exceed the 95th percentile of the blood pressure value distribution in a pediatric population, according to gender, age and height. The population on which reference tables are based is of fundamental importance to establish the threshold values for the diagnosis of hypertension in pediatric age. Before 2017, both American and European guidelines used nomograms created in the same reference population which included children of all weight classes. Given the close and well-known association between hypertension and excess weight in childhood, the 2017 American guidelines proposed new reference nomograms excluding subjects with overweight and obesity from the "historical" reference population. Furthermore, the new American guidelines suggested a fixed cut-off of 130/80 mmHg, starting from 13 years and regardless of gender and height, to make the diagnosis of hypertension. In this document, the Italian Hypertension Society (SIIA) and the Italian Pediatric Society (SIP) jointly discuss a number of issues raised by the new American guidelines that involve the entire medical community, and also address the definition of arterial hypertension in the transition phase between childhood and adulthood. In April of 2006, a team of researchers consisting of both university and community partners from a Mi'kmaq reserve in Nova Scotia began the data-collection phase of a high school-based research study that had been two years in planning. The study examines the possible relationships between youth-reported childhood maltreatment, posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms, depressive symptoms, alcohol misuse, and resiliency factors. The aim of the research study is to provide information about adolescent alcohol misuse that is of practical benefit to community-based service providers, and capable of making a scholarly contribution to the scientific study of the relations of anxiety/mood symptoms and addictive behaviours. The primary aim of this paper is to present both the context from which the project grew, and the steps involved in conducting research with our school partners and the community service providers. Purpose: In recent years, evidence has emerged about the importance of healthy fluid intake in children for physical and mental performance and health, and in the prevention of obesity. Accurate data on water intake are needed to inform researchers and policymakers and for setting dietary reference values. However, to date, there are few published data on fluid or water intakes in children. This is due partly to the fact that drinking water is not always reported in dietary surveys. The aim of this paper is to review the current status of the literature and highlight the challenges of assessing total fluid intake in children and adolescents.Results: From the dietary assessment literature it is apparent that children present unique challenges to assessing intake due to ongoing cognitive capacity development, limited literacy skills, difficulties in estimating portion sizes and multiple caregivers during any 1 day making it difficult to track intakes. As such, many issues should be considered when assessing total fluid intakes in children or adolescents. Various methods to assess fluid intakes exist, each with its own strengths and weaknesses; the ultimate choice of method depends on the research question and resources available. Based on the literature review, it is apparent that if the research focus is to assess only fluid intake, a fluid-specific method, such as a diary or record, appears to be a feasible approach to provide an accurate estimate of intakes. This report is a brief critique of the report commissioned by the Department of Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS; May-Chahal, Measham, Brannock, Amos, & Dagnall, 2004) to examine adolescent gambling in Britain. This brief critique is split into three main sections that cover general comments followed by more specific comments in relation to the executive summary and the rest of the report. The report also includes our own executive summary and an appendix of comments from other people in the field of youth gambling relating to the DCMS report. The reason for writing this critique is that the conclusions made in the DCMS report are the ones most likely to be heard at Ministerial level. Given that the report is selective in the use of the literature and the executive summary is written in such a way as to seriously minimize the problem and issue of adolescent gambling, we present a similar picture but with a different emphasis. Evidence exists regarding the impact of flourishing in individuals living with chronic pain, but there are currently no reviews which collate the literature on flourishing in adolescents living with chronic pain and their parents. Therefore, the aim of this scoping review was to map and review the current literature, to document how flourishing is defined and understood in the literature, and to identify gaps in the field. Six databases were searched (Web of Science, Medline, Embase, APA PsycNet and the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials). In addition, a limited gray literature search was conducted. The resulting data were collated and reported in relation to the review questions, by examining the included papers to search for the presence of flourishing. Database searches resulted in 7326 papers after duplicate removal, with eight remaining papers being assessed for full‐text eligibility. Following full‐text screening, a final four papers were included in the review. Within the papers, flourishing was defined in relation to commonalities of benefit finding, enhanced maturity and growth, and social support. Gaps in the literature and directions for future research are considered. This review suggests that there is a dearth of knowledge and research regarding flourishing among adolescents living with chronic pain and their parents, despite aspects of flourishing identified in limited literature. The article discusses a study by F. Zhang and colleagues which reported 20-metre shuttle run test (20mSRT) scores from Chinese school students. Topics include caution against the use of fallacious methods of estimating and interpreting the peak VO2 of children and adolescents, an appreciation for the researchers for raising the profile of pediatric health and well-being in China, and suggestions for researchers in China and elsewhere.

School and public libraries can play a fundamental and essential role in helping teens prepare for and move successfully into adulthood. Healthy adolescent development requires creating opportunities for teens to engage in year-round high-quality formal and informal learning experiences. While many public libraries ramp up teen services in the summer, or for special programs such as Teen Read Week™ and Teen Tech Week™, many do not provide intentional and sustained year-round teen programs and services. All teens have the capacity to learn, grow, and develop into knowledgeable, caring, and contributing adults, but to do this they must have access to the very best services and programs that school and public libraries can offer all year long. Background: The recent commentary article in this journal by Chandra-Mouli et al. speaks of a never-before opportunity to strengthen investment and action on adolescent contraception. We endorse the positive 'can-do' tone of the article, but noticed that at least four issues, which in our view are crucial, merit a comment. Main body: First of all, the article suggests that there is some sort of shared interest, based on a presumed global consensus around the use of contraceptives by adolescents - which is not the case: sexual rights are controversial. Secondly, for real progress in adolescent contraception to occur, we believe it is critical to thoroughly investigate and mention the factors, including political ones, that would need to be overcome. Thirdly, new avenues need to be explored that allow for accurate and positive teaching of adolescents about contraception in socio-cultural and political environments that are ambivalent about the issue. Fourthly, barriers at the global level that we already know of should not be silenced. There is sufficient evidence to call upon donors and international agencies to choose position and stop obstructing women's - including young women's - access to a broad range of contraceptives. The 'She Decides' movement is a heartening example. Conclusion: It is crucial to acknowledge the political dimension of sexual rights.
