Single‐atom heterogeneous catalysts with well‐defined architectures are promising for deriving structure–performance relationships, but the challenge lies in finely tuning the structural and electronic properties of the metal. To tackle this point, a new approach based on the surface diffusion of gold atoms on different cavities of N‐doped carbon is presented. By controlling the activation temperature, the coordination neighbors (Cl, O, N) and the oxidation state of the metal can be tailored. Semi‐hydrogenation of various alkynes on the single‐atom gold catalysts displays substrate‐dependent catalytic responses; structure insensitive for alkynols with γ‐OH and unfunctionalized alkynes, and sensitive for alkynols with α‐OH. Density functional theory links the sensitivity for alkynols to the strong interaction between the substrate and specific gold‐cavity ensembles, mimicking a molecular recognition pattern that allows to identify the cavity site and to enhance the catalytic activity. Selective hydrogenations lay at the heart of many industrial processes. The archetypal catalysts for this class of reactions are generally prepared by 'metal poisoning' strategies: the active metal is protected and selectively deactivated with various compounds. This approach has been applied for decades, with limited understanding. Low product selectivity and presence of toxic elements in the catalyst pose severe constraints in the utilization of these materials in the future. Thus, to develop more sustainable catalysts, this field has recently gained momentum. This Review analyzes the concepts and frontiers that have been developed in the last decade: from nanostructuring less conventional metals in order to improve their ability to activate H2, to the use of oxides as active phases, from alloying, to the ensemble control in hybrid materials, and site isolation approaches in single-site heterogeneous catalysts. Particular attention is given to the hydrogenation of alkynes and nitroarenes, two reactions at the core of the chemical industry, importantly applied in the manufacture of polymers, pharmaceuticals, nutraceuticals, and agrochemicals. Herein, we report the preparation of small and narrowly distributed (2.1 ± 0.5 nm) Ag nanoparticles supported on passivated silica, where the surface OH groups are replaced by OSiMe3 functionalities. This synthetic method involves the grafting of silver(I) bis(trimethylsilyl)amide ([AgN(SiMe3)2]4) on silica partially dehydroxylated at 700 °C, followed by a thermal treatment of the grafted complex under H2. The catalytic performance of this material was investigated in the semi-hydrogenation of propyne and 1-hexyne and compared with that of 2.0 ± 0.3 nm Ag nanoparticles supported on silica. Whilst surface passivation slightly decreases the activity in both reactions (by a factor 2-3), probably as a result of the decreased alkyne adsorption properties or the presence of less accessible active sites on the passivated support, the AgNP@SiO2 catalysts demonstrate a remarkable selectivity for the production of alkenes. TiO2-, Al2O3-, and ZrO2-supported CeO2 catalysts with different Ce loadings were prepared by wet impregnation of the carriers with an acidified solution of cerium ammonium nitrate. The calcined catalysts were characterized by bulk and surface-sensitive techniques, which included microcalorimetry, and evaluated in the three-phase hydrogenation of alkynes under continuous-flow conditions at variable temperature (293-413 K) and pressure (1-90 bar). A number of acetylenic compounds, which contain terminal or internal triple bonds, conjugated unsaturations, and additional functionalities, were systematically assessed. The results revealed the full stereo- and chemoselective character of the ceria catalysts, which outperform the well-known Lindlar catalyst, and open promising perspectives for the revolutionary use of a cost-effective oxide for the production of olefinic compounds in the vitamin and fine chemical industries. Site modification and isolation through selective poisoning comprise an effective strategy to enhance the selectivity of palladium catalysts in the partial hydrogenation of triple bonds in acetylenic compounds. The recent emergence of supported hybrid materials matching the stereo- and chemoselectivity of the classical Lindlar catalyst holds promise to revolutionize palladium-catalyzed hydrogenations, and will benefit from an in-depth understanding of these new materials. In this work, we compare the performance of bare, lead-poisoned, and ligand-modified palladium catalysts in the hydrogenation of diverse alkynes. Catalytic tests, conducted in a continuous-flow three-phase reactor, coupled with theoretical calculations and characterization methods, enable elucidation of the structural origins of the observed selectivity patterns. Distinctions in the catalytic performance are correlated with the relative accessibility of the active site to the organic substrate, and with the adsorption configuration and strength, depending on the ensemble size and surface potentials. This explains the role of the ligand in the colloidally prepared catalysts in promoting superior performance in the hydrogenation of terminal and internal alkynes, and short-chain alkynols. In contrast, the greater accessibility of the active surface of the Pd-Pb alloy and the absence of polar groups are shown to be favorable in the conversion of alkynes containing long aliphatic chains and/or ketone groups. The gas-phase hydrogenation of propyne to propene was investigated over a series of heterogeneous catalysts based on Pd (in the absence and the presence of CO), Ni, Au, Cu, and Cu–Ni. Catalytic tests in a continuous flow micro-reactor at ambient pressure and density functional theory (DFT) calculations were combined to understand complex structure–selectivity–activity relationships and their dependence on key experimental variables such as H2/alkyne and CO/H2ratios. Abstract: Alkyne hydrogenation, a widely used process in industry to purify olefin streams, comprises a prototype reaction to understand selectivity in heterogeneously catalyzed reactions. The selectivity of the reaction on palladium catalysts to the alkene, alkane, or oligomers strongly depends on the state of the (sub)surface; i.e., the occurrence of complex carbide/hydride phases. In practice, hydrogenation reactors in C2 and C3 cuts of steam crackers require continuous CO feeding in order to enhance the alkene selectivity of palladium-supported catalysts. In the present work, we have studied the impact of carbon monoxide on the formation of carbide and hydride phases as a standpoint to derive structure–performance relationships under realistic process conditions. For this purpose, catalytic tests on a standard 1wt.% Pd/Al2O3 and Density Functional Theory on Pd(111) were combined. The influence of: (i) the alkyne (ethyne and propyne), (ii) the hydrogen:alkyne ratio (1–10), (iii) the carbon monoxide:hydrogen ratio (0–0.2), and (iv) the catalyst pretreatment on the product distribution was assessed in a continuous flow fixed-bed reactor at ambient pressure. In absence of CO, subtle changes in the hydrogen:alkyne ratio generate undesired products. Carbon monoxide enables the external control of the catalyst state by suppressing the formation of subsurface hydride and carbide phases, thereby stabilizing a high alkene yield in a broad range of feed hydrogen:alkyne ratios. This scenario contrasts with the more fragile regime of the hydride–carbide phases under CO-free conditions. DFT calculations obtained a single Brønsted–Evans–Polanyi relationship independently of the state of the catalyst (carbide, hydride, CO-covered) and the alkyne–alkene–alkane set (C2, C3). Abstract: The partial hydrogenation of propyne was studied over copper-based catalysts derived from Cu–Al hydrotalcite and malachite precursors and compared with supported systems (Cu/Al2O3 and Cu/SiO2). The as-synthesized samples and the materials derived from calcination and reduction were characterized by XRF, XRD, TGA, TEM, N2 adsorption, H2-TPR, XPS, and N2O pulse chemisorption. Catalytic tests were carried out in a continuous flow-reactor at ambient pressure and 423–523K using H2:C3H4 ratios of 1–12 and were complemented by operando DRIFTS experiments. The propyne conversion and propene selectivity correlated with the copper dispersion, which varied with the type of precursor or support and the calcination and reduction temperatures. The highest exposed copper surface was attained on hydrotalcite-derived catalysts, which displayed C3H6 selectivity up to 80% at full C3H4 conversion and stable performance in long-run tests at T ⩾473K. Both activated Cu–Al hydrotalcites (this work) and Ni–Al hydrotalcites [S. Abelló, D. Verboekend, B. Bridier, J. Pérez-Ramírez, J. Catal. 259 (2008) 85] exhibited a relatively high alkene selectivity under optimal operation conditions, but they present a markedly distinctive catalytic behavior with respect to temperature and hydrogen-to-alkyne ratio. The product distribution was assigned through Density Functional Theory (DFT) simulations to the different stability of subsurface phases (carbides, hydrides) and the energies and barriers for the competing reaction mechanisms. The behavior of Cu in partial alkyne hydrogenation resembles that of Au nanoparticles, while Ni is closer to Pd. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

CeO 2 is a highly selective catalyst for the partial hydrogenation of alkynes. However, due to its limited H 2 splitting ability, a high operating temperature is required for the reaction, hampering the practical exploitation of this abundant oxide. In this work, we demonstrate that gallium promotes the activity of CeO 2 for the semi-hydrogenation of acetylene and methylacetylene, enabling a reduction of the operating temperature to 373 K, while maintaining an outstanding ethylene and propylene selectivity (80–97%), even in the presence of excess alkene in the feed. Oligomers comprised the main secondary product, while the selectivity to the corresponding alkane did not exceed 2%. The characterization of mixed Ce-Ga oxides reveals that the progressive incorporation of gallium into the ceria structure, forming a solid solution, boosts the oxygen storage capacity and the reducibility of the material. This is ascribed to the facilitated H 2 activation on the Ga-promoted samples, as confirmed by in situ infrared spectroscopy and density functional theory simulations. The interplay between the advantage brought by the decreased barrier for H 2 cleavage and the disadvantage due to the increased number of oxygen vacancies governs the reactivity of the CeGaO x catalysts in alkyne hydrogenation. The composition in the optimal catalyst, containing a molar Ce:Ga ratio of 95:5, was extrapolated to other trivalent cations. Indium incorporated in the ceria lattice favored the low-temperature H 2 activation and led to an activity enhancement that surpassed that of gallium. However, aluminum did not form a solid solution with ceria and caused no effect. This work comprises the first application of promoted cerias in hydrogenation catalysis and may prompt further developments in olefin purification. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
