Abstract

Reports that a pen-and-ink drawing of a palace in Venice, Italy, is one of the many treasures that the Bard Graduate Center in Manhattan, New York City, will show beginning March 11, 2004, when it opens "The Devonshire Inheritance: Five Centuries of Collecting at Chatsworth". Drawings by the Mannerist architect Andrea Palladio; Proposal for a new Doge's Palace in Venice which was never used.

2. Symposium showcases Japanese architecture.

Abstract

Several stellar Japanese architects recently converged on Manhattan, New York, for a symposium at the Japan Society called "Technology and Tradition in Contemporary Japanese Architecture," co-organized by the periodical "Architectural Record." The conference was launched with a lecture by Fumihiko Maki, recently appointed architect for a new United Nations building and a tower at Ground Zero. The focus then passed to younger architects, including Ware Kishi , Kengo Kuma, and the ebullient Jun Aoki. Aoki, Shigeru Ban and Kazuyo Sejima are rising architects. Each has built or is about to build in Manhattan: Aoki's work for Vuitton on Fifth Avenue, Ban's Paper Arch at the Museum of Modern Art in 2000, and Sejima's New Museum envisaged for the Bowery.

3. Designs on Public Space: Exclusion and the Creation of Bonus Plazas.

Abstract

Research has found that most bonus plazas in front of Manhattan office buildings are barren, uninviting spaces. But there has been little study of why that is so. Existing explanations suggest this is incidental to other causes-architects slavishly reproducing modernist architectural styles, or developers too cheap to build usable public space. Such explanations are found to be unsupported by the facts. This study of 291 Manhattan bonus plazas and the development process in New York, including site observations, analysis of newly available plaza data, and interviews of architects, planners, and building managers reveals that spaces were made uninviting intentionally, and that it was building developers who wanted the plazas to be inaccessible.
