Drawing on archival material and oral testimony of former students, this paper examines the lives and experiences of women in Catholic primary teacher training colleges in Ireland in the period 1922-1974. It commences with a brief overview of the historical context in which these colleges emerged, situating their development within the socio-political and cultural context of the emerging Free State and the changing primary school curriculum. Residential and single-sex, the paper argues that the colleges promoted a gendered ideology and culture of femininity which mirrored the conservative, nationalistic and ultramontane agenda of post-Independence Ireland. Paradoxically, while this often led to a limited, anti-intellectual experience and a hegemonic framing of women teachers' professionalism, many graduates used their new-found professional status as teachers to embrace high-profile leadership roles in twentieth-century Ireland, often in male-dominated fields.

The International Conference on the History of Records and Archives (ICHORA) has been held since 2003, with the most recent conference, ICHORA10, taking place online in July 2022. The conference aimed to reflect on the centenary of two significant events in recordkeeping history in the UK and Ireland. The conference featured various forms of participation, including short postcards from the past and longer academic presentations. The article focuses on the cataloguing, digitization, and conservation on the papers written by Father Luke Wadding at University College Dublin regarding his activities as historian, theologian, and Irish agent in Rome. It mentions that four of his manuscripts were kept by Paul Grosjean of Society of Jesus at the Merchants' Quay in 1920 in a catalogue of hagiographical works. It states that his written and received were preserved at the Vatican Library, Biblioteca Landiana in Piacenza, and Archives of the Bollandists in Brussels. It adds that majority of his letters were sent from Saint Isidore, few from Naples, and others were from the friaries of San Pietro and Aracoeli in Montorio, Rome.

Although anathema to domain experts, it is unfortunately the case that students of history can graduate with an honors degree without ever handling or analyzing archival materials. Archives are unique resources--ranging from official state documents to personal papers--that have the potential to enrich historical research immeasurably. Access to repositories by large groups of people can be difficult--for example, both the National Archives of Ireland and the National Library of Ireland Manuscripts division, for conservation and preservation reasons, cannot meaningfully cater for groups larger than fifteen at a time. Difficulties associated with busy undergraduate timetables also contribute to why archival visits to off-campus locations can be a rarity for several programs. To address this problem at their institution, the authors used digital surrogates of archival materials to give students a practice-based learning (PBL) experience, allowing them to transcribe and interact with the records in a classroom setting. In this article, they discuss the challenges associated with applying PBL in archives to "Health, Gender, State, and Irish Medical Care, 1837-1948," an elective module offered to fourth-year students at the University of Limerick in Autumn 2018.

Digital scholarship is ubiquitous, where even the most Luddite of scholars use some form of digital technology in their research. Differences in the level of technology use have become a question of degree not kind. Currently in the second wave of Digital Humanities, Presner (2010) argues that Digital Humanities 2.0 introduces entirely new-born digital paradigms, methodologies, and publication models not derived from print culture. This new wave is "deeply generative, creating the environments and tools for producing, curating, and interacting with knowledge that is 'born digital' and lives in various digital contexts" (Presner 2010, para. 13). Using the case study of a Digital Humanities project called "The Waterford Memories Project", this paper will consider both the role of born digital survivor testimony in confronting a difficult and disputed past in Ireland and, more broadly, how we create and access knowledge in this contested space. The Waterford Memories Project is an oral history driven study in digital humanities, publicly documenting survivor narratives of the Magdalene Laundries and Industrial Schools in the South-East of Ireland. The last Magdalene Laundry in Ireland closed in 1996. These institutions formed part of a system of coercive confinement, which incorporated a wide range of historical institutions used to confine both children and adults whose "crimes" were to act against the strict and punitive moral codes of the period, poverty, or mental illness. This paper will examine the role of born digital data in public humanities (in the form of the audio-recorded survivor oral histories), and frames the Waterford Memories digital humanities project in the technoculture and minimal computing literature, emphasising the overall need for a human-centred approach to technology at all stages of the research. Cultural stories can become fossilised and continue to perpetuate the silencing of survivors; it is therefore essential to consider how the openly available digital testimony contributes to the framing of cultural discourse around our history of coercive confinement in Ireland. This paper draws on original rigorous research conducted in an extensive range of local, national and international state archives, sporting repositories and personal papers. In focus is the 1948 London Olympic Games, the Olympic movement and a 'new' phase in Irish–British relations involving international sport. Here, for the first time, we elucidate the role of non-state sportive diplomats who, acting as cultural intermediaries, were involved in the production of ideas about the normative rules governing international jurisdiction and identity that prevented nations/states from being recognized on their own terms. The intricate details revealed here are made possible by a rigorous two-way traffic between sensitizing concepts and evidence: specifically, the quest for exciting significance by non-state actors, soft power struggles and 'patriot games' via the medium of international Olympic and athletic movements. Purpose - This paper aims to use two case studies of digital archives designed by library and information professionals and historians to highlight the twin issues of academic authenticity and accuracy of digital representations. Design/methodology/approach - Using secondary literature, the author established a hypothesis about the way in which academic researchers engage with electronic texts. It is argued that academics are often distrustful of the authenticity of much that appears in digital form and doubtful as to its accuracy. The case studies are used as a means to demonstrate the measures that library and information professionals can take to assuage these concerns. Findings - Given reasonable financial resources and staff, it is relatively easy to adopt a transparently academic approach. Accuracy is much more problematic, and is often compromised by the unwieldy nature of these types of projects. Originality/value - Most evaluations of digitisation projects have not focused on the issues of academic authenticity and textual accuracy; indeed, the latter is difficult to gauge when the ASCII text is hidden and where there is little incentive for designers to be honest about the potential flaws in their search engines. The article presents information about the archives of the National Irish Visual Arts Library (NIVAL) at the National College of Art and Design (NCAD) in Dublin, Ireland. In August 1997, NIVAL was formally established in order to collect, store and provide public access to information regarding twentieth-century and contemporary Irish art and design. Included in the archives of NIVAL are monographs, periodicals, video recordings, posters and papers owned by artists and designers. Access software is used by NCAD for its NIVAL archive.

Irish bishops found themselves part of a conservative minority when the Second Vatican Council embarked on a radical overhaul of the Catholic Church between 1962 and 1965. The Irish Church hierarchy generally implemented the resultant changes in a hesitant and unenthusiastic manner. Criticism of their performance was generally muted but the spirit of Vatican II was not entirely without enthusiastic Irish advocates. REALITY, a Redemptorist monthly with a large and mainly young readership, experienced ongoing conflict with clerical censors in the second half of the 1960s. Material in the Archive of the Dublin Catholic Archdiocese show clashes occuring over ecumenism, Vatican II's new conception of the duties of the Catholic lay person and the issue of whether church teaching ought to be enforced by state law. A complicating factor inhibiting repressive action by the Archdiocese was the links forged by this religious magazine with the secular world of Dublin journalism. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This contribution focuses on collaborative practice and the mutual benefits which can derive from strategic partnerships between archives and academia. The study takes as its focus the establishment and early development of the Institute for the Study of Welsh Estates, which has operated as a joint initiative between the Archives and Special Collections and College of Arts and Humanities at Bangor University since 2013. This collaborative relationship mirrors broader trends and potentials in the collections-based research environment, which are seeing core sector-specific priorities such as cataloguing, conservation, collection advocacy and accessibility on the part of archives; and research, grant capture, teaching, public engagement and 'impact' on the part of academia, increasingly blurring into complementary and shared objectives. Here, we analyse how collaborative engagement with one archive in the Archives and Special Collections—the Penrhyn estate archive—is leading towards the delivery of strategic objectives across both sides of the partnership. This is a study of the abortive attempt by the direct rule Conservative government in the early 1980s to impose unity on the diversity of initial teacher education (ITE) provision in Northern Ireland (NI) through the work of the NI Higher Education Review Group, chaired by Sir Henry Chilver. Harnessing hitherto untapped archives, it shows how government was forced to bow to the divergent views and religious interests of Northern Ireland the society. This realpolitik was to produce a much less radical shake-up of ITE activity while leaving the Catholic sector essentially intact. The paper demonstrates the relevance of historical factors, the risks inherent in the failure to establish representative review bodies and the power and political adroitness of the Catholic Church at a critical juncture. This case study traces the evolution of the Make Film History project, an award-winning archival resource which gives emerging filmmakers and educators in the UK and Ireland access to 270 films for creative reuse on course-related projects. It explores the barriers to the creative reuse of audiovisual archive material in education; and how the project overcame these with the support of our project partners at the participating archives to create a new, sustainable model for creative reuse in a range of educational settings and in partnership with film festivals. Information on the Digital Preservation for the Arts, Social Sciences and Humanities (DPASSH) conference held in Dublin, Ireland from June 25-26, 2015 is presented. This research reports on qualitative interviews with 31 participants who are Irish parents, identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, queer (LGBQ), and who expressed difficulty in the process of obtaining birth certificates for their children. Our aim was to use personal information management (PIM) and personal digital archiving (PDA) as a lens to explore the invisible work that the Irish government requires of a sexual minority parent group to obtain "equal" treatment in the birth registration and birth certificate process. Our findings suggest overlap with existing information behavior research (IB) that explore invisible information work, IB as a burden, information marginalization, information vulnerability, and information overload, and the everyday in IB. We propose a new framework: personal information burden (PIM‐B) which is characterized by additional PIM activities, negative affect, lack of identity self extension to the personal information, and additional information seeking. Summary During the summer of 2014 reports that a ‘septic tank grave’ containing ‘skeletons of 800 babies’ had been discovered on the site of a former home for ‘unmarried mothers’ in Tuam, County Galway appeared in the international press and social media. Doubts quickly began to surface around the assertion that the remains of children had, in fact, been ‘dumped’ in a ‘septic tank, but it is still important that responses to ‘unmarried mothers’ and their children are subject to contemporary scrutiny because substantial concerns clearly warrant investigation. In June 2014 the Minister for Children and Youth Affairs, in the Irish coalition government, announced the setting up of an inquiry. Findings Acknowledging the significance of historical and archival research for social work, the article provides a more expansive contextual account than that featured in the media coverage. The main focus is on policy and practice in relation to ‘unmarried mothers’ in the early years of the state and the establishment of quasi-penal Mother and Baby Homes. The lack of legal child adoption also restricted the meaningful choices available to expectant, unwed women in Ireland. Many, known to social workers as P.F.I.s (‘pregnant from Ireland’), decided to flee to England to give birth and have children placed for adoption. Drawing on the annual reports of the Catholic Protection and Rescue Society of Ireland, it is revealed that these women often faced being ‘repatriated’ back to Ireland. Local authority archives services are a vital component in the development of the local history or the collective memory of a region. This article will examine communities that do not have ready access to local records. It will also examine the alternative solutions sought by such communities when preserving their documentary heritage and the importance of establishing a physical collection of archives in a locality. Despite legislation stipulating that each local authority must preserve and make available its archives, Ireland does not yet have a uniform local authority archive service model. Many city and county councils throughout the country have neither professional archivists nor standard archives services, leaving the preservation of archival materials in certain local authorities to national institutions, historical societies or private collectors. This article presents findings from a case study in 2014 of one such local authority, County Offaly. The article begins by presenting the theories in archival literature in relation to archives, community and memory. The article proceeds to an analysis of the local authority archive sector in Ireland, before presenting the perspectives of various stakeholders in County Offaly using data gathered from interviews and questionnaires. The study concludes that in the absence of local authority archives services, community archives will emerge to collect and preserve the documentary heritage of their regions. Since the financial crisis of 2007–2008, newly qualified archivists in Ireland have increasingly found themselves working for years in short-term contract positions, augmented in many cases by volunteering at repositories or by taking government-sponsored internships. This article explores the ways in which the jobs market has changed in Ireland for archivists and records managers from 2008 to 2014, how the lack of employment stability has impacted new archives professionals in both personal and professional terms, and what, if any, future steps might be necessary or useful to counter the effects on both. The construction and destruction of empire has been, from the beginning, a problem of human, political, economic and physical geography. Nineteenth-century Ireland saw the undertaking of a mapping project of unprecedented scale in the British Empire, and one whose legacy remains in dispute to the present day. On the one hand, the mapping of Ireland has been seen as of a kind with the often violent military surveying of all colonies; on the other, it has been lauded as the beginning of a genuine, if government-sponsored, attempt to remember and recover the past. This essay seeks to offer a new way to think about the survey of Ireland by interrogating the poetry of one of the employees of the Ordnance Survey, James Clarence Mangan, suggesting that his translations of Gaelic ruin poems in particular offer a nuanced vision of the dialectic between loss and preservation that subtends the work of mapmaking. It also draws on recent developments in the theorization of colonial archives to argue for a more subtle way of understanding the nature of mapping in Ireland, which may help to modulate received ideas about colonial mapping practices in general. The article focuses on a study which analyzed the operative exposure of all trainees on the National Basic Surgical Training (BST) programme in Ireland. Retrospective analysis of data obtained from a web-based logbook was done. Simple skin excision with trainees was the most common general surgery operation performed. The study found that valuable data to analyze training programme performance was provided by a centralized web-based logbook.

Objective: Exploration of academic and creative potentials of first-degree relatives of hospital-treated psychotic patients in Iceland. Method: Relatives identified in a previously published family study of psychosis are evaluated, using records available at the National Archives and National Library in Reykjavik. Performance of groups of relatives is compared to that of the general population. Results: Healthy relatives of patients are found to excel over others in authorship of books of fiction or poetry, in general school performance at age 20 years and in mathematics.
