The article calls the attention of interested individuals to submit article that will be presented during conferences of Associations concerning economics. The organizers of the Seventh Annual Heilbronn Symposium in Economics and the Social Sciences Christian Freiherr von Wolff that will be held on June 22-25,1995 is inviting everyone to submit abstract and correspondence relevant to the theme. Likewise, the organizers of the 22nd Annual Meeting of the History of Economics Society that will be held on June 2-5, 1995 in South Bend, Indiana is calling the same.

This paper discusses the continuing relevance of the British Association of South Asian Studies (BASAS) in maintaining an open field of research, teaching and enquiry in relation to South Asia, despite the growing push towards ‘policy-relevant’ themes' in researching funding. It then introduces the papers in this special issue drawn from the 2004 Annual Conference of BASAS. The underlying thread is an exploration of the everyday power relations, represented in all spheres of life, be it the media, resource control, religion or livelihood strategies, shaping people's identities and locating them within social hierarchies, forming as a consequence the basis of the process of development and change. This article provides an overview of the issue which gives emphasis on both the plenary and the presidential addresses presented at the 1985 annual meeting of the Mid-South Sociological Association held in Little Rock, Arkansas. The success of the meeting was made even more so by these two extremely timely and thought provoking papers from Bill Catton and Marsha McGee. Both not only reflect the introspective nature of sociology and sociologists at this time, but also provide direction for the discipline. Hence, it is hoped that the quality of both the 1985 plenary address and the 1985 presidential address serves as an encouragement to those who would like to attend the 1986 annual meeting in Jackson, Mississippi.

The article presents a calendar of events related to economics for 2007. The History of Economics Society will have four sessions at the meetings of the Allied Social Sciences Association on January 5 to 7. The 2007 History of Political Economy conference will be on April. The 2007 conference of the European Society for the History of Economic Thought will be on July 5 to 8.

Most of the papers in this symposium were presented at a conference on the economics of information held at Stanford in April 1975, under the auspices of the National Science Foundation—National Bureau of Economic Research (four of the papers, those by Heal, Salop, Spence and Stiglitz, had been submitted to the Review earlier, but because of the similarity of topic, are published with the conference papers). The papers, though all related to the problems arising from costly information, are diverse both with respect to the question addressed, the techniques of analysis employed and the particular markets investigated. A basic theme running through most of the papers is that imperfect information alters, in a fundamental way, the conventional notion of a market, with buyers and sellers coming together to trade; in a full information equilibrium there is a single price, markets clear and all individuals and firms view themselves as price takers. The price charged is independent of the quantity purchased. Although the notion of the market-place is often thought of as an idealization, even when there is not a single market-place at which all transactions occur, the economy behaves as if there were a single market-place; this will be true so long as there are some arbitrageurs to make sure that the "law of single price" prevails. Finally, conventional theory has shown that under fairly weak conditions such a competitive equilibrium exists and is Pareto Optimal. Recent developments in the economics of information, including the papers presented here, have shown that ail of these statements are questionable. In the papers presented here, there is not a single price in equilibrium; firms do not act as price takers; prices do more than just clear markets—they convey information; prices charged may depend on the quantity purchased; competitive equilibrium may not exist and may not be Pareto Optimal. This article highlights regional conferences of the International Sociological Association (ISA) as of May 1997. The conference entitled the Future of Sociology in Eastern Asia, was attended by many sociologists from many countries of the region. The papers encompassed contributions of authors coming from the Korean Republic, Japan, continental China, Taiwan, Hong-Kong and the U.S. The introductory speech of I. Wallerstein, the president of ISA, opened the crucial discourse by a critical analysis of Eurocentrism in sociology. Wallerstein, on the other hand, defended certain universal contributions of European sociological thought, and on the other hand, stated his hitherto prevailing inability to prevent the separation of social science from philosophy and the humanities--that is, the search for good and beauty, of scientific knowledge from social and political action, and consequently, the insufficient critical approach to the dominating capitalist social and economic system. An analogous regional conference, The Building of an Open Society and the Prospects of Sociology in Eastern and Central Europe, organized in September 1996, somewhat differed from the model pre-supposed by the leadership of the ISA.

The article presents information about the past and future activities of the World Association for Public Opinion Research (WAPOR) and its members as well as previews of forthcoming conferences and seminars. Yvan Corbeil, past president of WAPOR, has initiated an international study which will explore amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. Little is known about this disease. It destroys the nerves controlling voluntary muscular activity, gradually extinguishing all movements including finally the ability to breathe. Six standing WAPOR representative groups have been proposed to tie in other international organizations affiliated with the International Social Science Council. The main goal of these working groups is to explore the opportunities for international, interdisciplinary co-operation, communication, and, even in some cases, funding. Next year's annual WAPOR conference will be jointly held with the American Association for Public Opinion Research and will take place from May 16 to 21, 1990 in the city of Lancaster, Pennsylvania.

The article presents information related to the International Economic History Association (IEHA). The association will hold its 14th international congress in Helsinki, Finland, in August 2006. The local organizing institutions are the Department of Social Science History and the Department of History at the University of Helsinki. The scientific program of the congress will comprise approximately 100 sessions. The IEHA welcomes proposals for sessions on all topics in economic history, the history of economics, demographic history, social history, urban history, cultural history, gender studies and methodological aspects of historical research.

This paper announces that a general body meeting of the newly formed Punjab Sociological Society was held at Patiala on February 22, 1988. Jaspal Singh, Gurnam Saran Bhainagan, J.S. Gandhi, Parkash Singh Jammu were elected to lead the committee. The committee later coopted D.R. Arora as its twelfth member. The Executive Committee has passed several resolutions. It passed a provision for teaching sociology for undergraduate level which will be made in all colleges in Punjab. Elementary sociology may be introduced in all degree and diploma courses in engineering, technology, medicine in Punjab.

An international seminar on Political and Electoral Communication and Marketing was held by World Association for Public Opinion Research (WAPOR), International Social Science Council and Sao Paulo's Federation of Industries in September 1990. On November 24, 1990, the Japanese Association for Public Opinion Research conducted its Anniversary Conference in Tokyo, Japan.
