Based on the detection data obtained by the LMI (Lightning Mapping Imager)—China's first satellite-based lightning observation payload—from 2018–2022, combined with the ERA5 (ECMWF Reanalysis v5) reanalysis data of the same period, the temporal and spatial characteristics of lightning activities over the Tibetan Plateau and its response to the atmospheric circulation background are studied in detail in this paper. Based on the LMI data, we obtained consistent and continuous long-time-series lightning observation data for the whole region of the plateau for the first time, and the results show that the lightning density in the Tibetan Plateau is much smaller than that in the central and eastern land regions of China (CELR) at the same latitude. Lightning activity was unevenly distributed over the plateau and had obvious seasonal variation characteristics. The monthly amount of lightning and its ratio in the total amount of lightning for the whole year show the characteristics of "increasing first and then decreasing". Most lightning occurs in June and July, which is about a month earlier than that in the CELR. The amount of lightning fluctuated in May and decreased rapidly after August, which is consistent with the local convective thunderstorm season. The hourly lightning frequency at different altitudes over the Tibetan Plateau is consistent with local convections and unique topography, and it is closely related to the features of the local night rain. The results also reveal comparative features between lightning and the atmospheric circulation background on the plateau, such as the wind field, CAPE (convective available potential energy), temperature, and humidity at 500 hPa. In the context of global warming, the average temperature in the central and western regions of the plateau increased in the past five years. This shows that the Tibetan Plateau, as a summer heat source, has a gradual warming trend, and the corresponding convections and lightning activities are also increasing gradually. Lightning activities can be used as an indicator of DCSs (deep convective systems). This paper gives a more comprehensive understanding of the characteristics of lightning activities all over the Tibetan Plateau, especially in the western part of the plateau, which lacked ground-based lightning observation data before. In addition, it reveals the comparative features between the lightning activities and the circulation background over the plateau in the past five years, which is helpful for further understanding the contribution of lightning activities to the plateau's climate change. The Tibetan Plateau (TP) plays a key role in the water cycle of High Asia and its downstream regions. The respective influence of the Indian and East Asian summer monsoon on TP precipitation and the regional water resources, together with the detection of moisture transport pathways and source regions are subject of recent research. In this study we present a twelve-year high-resolution climatology of the atmospheric water transport (AWT) on and towards the TP, using a new dataset, the High Asia Reanalysis (HAR), which better represents the complex topography of the TP and surrounding high mountain ranges than coarse resolution datasets. We focus on spatio temporal patterns, vertical distribution and transport through the TP boundaries. The results show that the mid-latitude westerlies have a higher share in summertime AWT on the TP than assumed so far. Water vapour (WV) transport constitute the main part, whereby transports of water as cloud particles (CP) play also a role in winter in the Karakoram and western Himalayan regions. High mountain valleys in the Himalayas facilitate AWT from the south whereas the high mountain regions inhibit the AWT to a large extend and limit the influence of the Indian summer monsoon. No transport from the East Asian monsoon to the TP could be detected. Our results show that 40% of the atmospheric moisture needed for precipitation comes from outside the TP, while the remaining 60% are provided by local moisture recycling. How far precipitation variability can be explained by variable moisture supply has to be studied in future research by analysing the atmospheric dynamic and moisture recycling more in detail. Over‐estimation of summer precipitation over the Tibetan Plateau (TP) is a well‐known and persistent problem in most climate models. This study demonstrates the impact of a Gaussian Probability Density Function cloud fraction scheme on rainfall simulations using the Weather Research and Forecasting model. It is found that this scheme in both 0.1° and 0.05° resolutions significantly reduces the wet bias through both local feedbacks and large‐scale dynamic process. Specifically, increased cloud water/ice content with this scheme reduces surface shortwave radiation, and consequently surface heat fluxes and evapotranspiration. This, in turn, dampens the large‐scale thermal effect of the TP and weakens the exaggerated monsoon circulation and low‐level moisture convergence. It is this large‐scale dynamic process that contributes the most (∼70%) to the wet bias reduction. Although this paper presents a modeling study, it highlights the cloud radiative feedback to the large‐scale dynamics and precipitation over the TP. The latter is a major driver of the South Asian monsoon that conveys moisture to the TP, and its weakening reduces moisture convergence over the TP. Both the decreases in local evaporation and remote moisture convergence contribute to the alleviation of the precipitation overestimation, and the latter plays a dominant role. These findings provide a unique perspective for reducing the wet bias over the TP, focusing on the surface available energy and associated remote moisture processes. Mêdog and Nagqu are two typical climate regions of the Tibetan Plateau, with different atmospheric conditions and local orography. This may lead to different diurnal variation patterns of clouds and precipitation. This paper investigates the diurnal variations of clouds and precipitation in Mêdog and Nagqu, using ground-based measurements from Ka-band cloud radar and a Particle Size and Velocity (PARSIVEL) disdrometer. High frequencies of cloud cover and precipitation occur from 23:00 local solar time (LST) to 05:00 LST in Mêdog, while low frequencies appear from 11:00 LST to 17:00 LST. The occurrence frequencies in Nagqu maintain high values from 13:00 LST to 21:00 LST. In terms of mean rain rate, heavier rainfall appears in the evening and at night in Mêdog, with peaks at 00:00 LST and 18:00 LST, respectively. In Nagqu, the heaviest rainfall occurs at 12:00 LST. In addition, the afternoon convective rainfall in Nagqu is characterized by a much higher concentration of large drops, which can be classified as continental-like. The morning rainfall has the lowest concentration of large drops and can be classified as maritime-like. Finally, the mechanisms of diurnal variations in the two regions are discussed. The diurnal cycle of clouds and precipitation in Mêdog may be associated with the nocturnal convergence of moisture flux and mountain–valley wind circulation. Diurnal variations in Nagqu have a high correlation with the diurnal cycle of solar radiation. Recent climate and environment over the Tibetan Plateau (TP) have undergone significant changes, dominated by variations in the Westerlies and the Indian summer monsoon. However, long‐term shifts in atmospheric circulation during the transitional seasons are still lacking. Here we investigate the modern distribution of Tsuga pollen over the central‐western TP and confirm it as an indicator of variable atmospheric circulation in spring. By combining our Tsuga record from Taro Co with existing records in the Tsuga pollen source area, we suggest that a potential particle transport pathway from the southern slope of the Himalayas to the interior of the plateau appeared in the spring of the late Holocene. Our results show that the springtime atmospheric circulation over the southwestern TP during the early and late Holocene is closely related to the substantial remnants of ice sheets at northern high latitudes and the frequency of El Niño events, respectively. The physicochemical properties and origins of atmospheric aerosols in the Tibetan Plateau (TP) region are a research topic of great interest, but an in‐depth understanding of this topic is challenging, partially due to a lack of intensive in situ observations. Thus, a field campaign was conducted over Yadong, a remote area on the south slope of the TP from June 11 to 31 August 2021. The aerosol loading was low, with a black carbon mass concentration of 147.4 ± 98.4 ng·m−3. Aerosol single‐scattering albedo was low (0.73 ± 0.11 at 550 nm) and increased from 450 to 700 nm wavelength. Organic matter (OM) accounting for 69.6% of the total aerosol mass and relatively high secondary organic carbon ratios, highlighting the importance of secondary formation. An interesting phenomenon observed was that the evolution of aerosols was mainly characterized by diurnal variation, which could not be explained by large‐scale atmospheric processes such as Indian summer monsoon. Instead, it was found that regional mountain‐valley winds between the Himalayas and South Asia transported polluted air masses toward the TP, especially in the afternoon when regional valley wind are expected to be the strongest and the boundary layer in South Asia is deepest. Additionally, daytime local valley wind further elevated these aerosols to higher altitudes on the TP. This paper provides insights into the transport mechanisms of aerosols from South Asia to the TP. These findings are of great importance since aerosols exhibit significant diurnal variations in the TP region. The Tibetan Plateau (TP) possesses the largest cryosphere in the world outside of the Arctic and Antarctic, and is the source of nine major rivers in Asia. The surface environment of the TP has undergone significant changes against the background of global warming. It is projected that the continuation of climate change in the future will result in most of the glaciers and frozen soil disappearing by the end of this century, and freshwater resources will be greatly reduced, on which 22% of the world's population depends. These environmental changes are of great concern to global society given the influences of the TP on the climate at the global scale. However, great uncertainties exist in global climate simulations over the TP, which affects our ability to properly understand the associated water security crisis. Based on atmospheric dynamics and physical processes, dynamical downscaling can characterize surface conditions more accurately than global simulations, and better simulate and predict regional or local weather and climate situations. With advances in supercomputing, the grid spacing of dynamical downscaling simulations has been continuously increasing, marching the technique into the kilometer-scale era. In this paper, the origin and development of dynamical downscaling in the TP region from the quarter-degree to kilometer scale is firstly introduced, including an assessment of the advantages and disadvantages of dynamical downscaling at the kilometer scale over the TP. Then, the main land surface factors affecting the performance of dynamical downscaling over the TP are described, as well as a brief introduction to a land surface model with specific plateau characteristics. Specifically, it has emerged that perfecting the land surface model and improving the performance of land-atmosphere interaction are the most effective ways to advance the performance of dynamic downscaling in this region. The westerly jet (WJ) is an important component of atmospheric circulation, which is characterized by prominent seasonal variations in intensity and position. However, the response of the WJ over Asia during the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) is still not clear. Using general circulation model experiments, the seasonal behaviors of the WJ over central Asia and Japan are analyzed in this paper. The results show that, compared to the present day (PD), the WJ presents a complicated response during the LGM, both in intensity and position. Over central Asia, it becomes weaker in both summer and winter. But over Japan, it is enhanced in summer but becomes diminished in winter. In terms of position, the WJ over central Asia shifts southward in both summer and winter, whereas the WJ over Japan moves southward in summer but does not change obviously relative to PD in winter. Such WJ changes are well explained by meridional temperature gradients in high troposphere, which is closely linked to seasonal thermal anomalies over the Tibetan Plateau (TP). Despite cooler LGM conditions, the anomalous warming center over the TP becomes stronger in summer. Derived from the heat budget equation, the stronger heating center is mainly caused by the weaker adiabatic cooling generated from ascending motion over the area south of the TP. In winter, the cooling over the TP is also strengthened, mostly owing to the subsidence-induced weaker adiabatic heating. The variability of interior atmospheric potential vorticity (PV) is linked with PV generation at the Earth's surface. The present paper reveals the features of the surface PV and provides a stepping stone to investigate the surface PV budget. In this study, the formats of the PV and PV budget adopting a generalized vertical coordinate were theoretically examined to facilitate the calculation of the surface PV and its budget. Results show that the formats of the PV and PV budget equations are independent of the vertical coordinate. While the vertical component of the surface PV dominates over the platform of the Tibetan Plateau, the horizontal component plays an important role over the slopes of the Tibetan Plateau, especially the southern slope owing to the strong in‐situ meridional gradient of the potential temperature. These results indicate that the employment of complete surface PV not only provides a finer PV structure but also more appropriately reveals its effect on atmospheric circulation. Diagnosis based on reanalysis and model output demonstrates that the surface PV budget equation is well balanced both in terms of the climate mean and synoptic process, and the surface PV budget in June has a prominent diurnal cycle. The diabatic heating with a minimum in the early morning and a maximum from evening to midnight contributes dominantly to this diurnal cycle. It is further indicated that positive PV generation due to diabatic heating is essential for the formation, development, and movement of the Tibetan Plateau vortex. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Extreme glacier melt has important implications for climate change studies and glacier‐related hazards. Few attempts have been made to study the characteristics and mechanisms of extreme melt on the Tibetan Plateau (TP) and surroundings, one of the largest concentrations of glaciers beyond the polar regions. To address this gap, we investigated the magnitude and possible drivers of anomalous early spring glacier melt in 2022 on the central TP using multi‐source observations (October 2020–July 2022) of Kuoqionggangri and Sangqu glaciers and an energy and mass balance model. Our results show that anomalous melt of both glaciers occurred in early spring (18 March–10 April 2022), when glaciers are traditionally expected to be frozen. There were 89 cumulative hours with air temperatures above 0°C, with a positive cumulative air temperature of 121.80°C hour at 5,700 m on Kuoqionggangri Glacier. The glacier‐wide cumulative melts on Kuoqionggangri and Sangqu glaciers from 18 March to 10 April 2022 were 22 ± 14.2 and 48 ± 37.5 mm w.e., respectively. Such anomalous glacier melt was driven by high incoming shortwave radiation and sensible heat flux, which were influenced by low cloud fraction and precipitation, and high air temperature during early spring. The weakening and northward‐shift of the westerlies, coupled with descending air motions over the central TP, reduced cloud fraction and hindered the transport of cold, moist air to the central TP. These changes occurred both in the central TP and the Himalaya, indicating the influence of macroscale atmospheric circulation patterns on this extreme glacier melt. Extreme glacier melt not only accelerates glacier mass loss, but is also important for changing climates and triggering glacier‐related disasters. Here, results show that extreme weather conditions and anomalous glacier melt occurred in early spring 2022 on the central TP. High air temperature, low cloud fraction and precipitation were the main characteristics of extreme weather events. Accompanying this extreme event, anomalously high incoming shortwave radiation and sensible heat flux control extreme glacier melt. We found that extreme weather conditions occurred in both the central TP and the northern foothills of the Himalaya. Our results indicate that extreme weather events and glacier melt were linked to large‐scale atmospheric circulation and regional climate conditions. This study contributes to a deeper insight into the characteristics and processes of glacier melt. The South Asian summer monsoon (SASM) is a significant monsoon system that exerts a profound impact on climate and human livelihoods. According to 38 models from the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 6, the SASM circulation is projected to weaken significantly under global warming as seen in the weakened low-level westerly wind over the northern tropical Indian Ocean; however, the associated climate dynamics is still under debate. Here, we identify that the weakened low-level westerly wind is closely related to the enhanced latent heating over the Tibetan Plateau (TP), which corresponds with increased summer precipitation in the future. The intensified TP latent heating triggers an anomalous meridional circulation with ascending motions over the plateau and descending motions to the south, leading to an anomalous low-level anticyclone over the northern tropical Indian Ocean. This anticyclone greatly weakens the prevailing low-level westerlies of the SASM through easterly anomalies at the anticyclone's southern flank. Moisture budget analysis further reveals that increased atmospheric water vapor, rather than the vertical dynamic component, makes the largest contribution to the increased precipitation over the TP. Cumulus (Cu) from shallow convection is one of the dominant cloud types over the Tibetan Plateau (TP) in the summer according to CloudSat- CALIPSO observations. Its thermodynamic effects on the atmospheric environment and impacts on the large-scale atmospheric circulation are studied in this paper using the Community Atmospheric Model, version 5.3 (CAM5.3). It is found that the model can reasonably simulate the unique distribution of diabatic heating and Cu over the TP. Shallow convection provides the dominant diabatic heating and drying to the lower and middle atmosphere over the TP. A sensitivity experiment indicates that without Cu over the TP, large-scale condensation and stratiform clouds would increase dramatically, which induces enhanced low-level wind and moisture convergence toward the TP, resulting in significantly enhanced monsoon circulation with remote impact on the areas far beyond the TP. Cu therefore acts as a safety valve to modulate the atmospheric environment that prevents the formation of superclusters of stratiform clouds and precipitation over the TP. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper examines the local and non-local climatic effects of wetter arid areas of Northwestern China (ANWC) in summer using a fully coupled climate model. In response to soil moisture increase, the local air temperature significantly decreases, and precipitation increases in summer. The wetter ANWC results in a warmer and rainless climate over the Central part of North China Plain (CNCP). While the influence of increasing soil moisture on the Tibetan Plateau (TP) precipitation is negligible due to the high altitude. A cooler climate over ANWC leads to an abnormal descending motion occurring. Meanwhile, an anomalous high pressure and an abnormal anticyclonic circulation occurs in 500 hPa over the west of ANWC. Correspondingly, a huge anomalous cyclone circulation occurs over the northeastern part of China and Mongolia, which can hinder the northward movement of the East Asian summer Monsoon (EASM) and reduce the water vapor transport into Central China Plain. As a result, the weakened EASM thus leads to rainless over CNCP. As soil moisture increases over ANWC is stronger, the magnitudes of the influence on the atmospheric field become larger. The relationship between Tibetan Plateau (TP) snow cover and the East Asian summer monsoon (EASM) has long been discussed, but the underlying mechanism remains controversial. In this paper, the snow-albedo and snow-hydrology feedbacks over the TP are investigated based on multiple sources of snow data for the period 1979-2011. The results indicate that winter snow cover plays an important role in cooling local air temperature through the snow-albedo effect; the TP surface net solar radiation in years with above-normal snow cover is approximately 18 W m−2 less than that in below-normal snow cover years. However, data analysis demonstrates that persistent effects of winter snow cover are limited to the period from winter to spring over most parts of the central and eastern TP. Therefore, the preceding snow cover over the central and eastern TP exerts little influence over either the in situ summer atmospheric heat source or the EASM, because of its limited persistence. In contrast, the effects of winter or spring snow cover anomalies over the western TP and the Himalayas can last until summer, and these anomalies further influence the EASM by modulating moisture transport to eastern China and favoring eastward-propagating synoptic disturbances that are generated over the TP. Generally, above-normal snow cover over the western TP and the Himalayas facilitates abundant summer precipitation between the Yangtze and Yellow River basins, which is confirmed by results from a regional Weather Research and Forecasting model simulation. Based on the observational and reanalysis datasets, a dipole pattern of the early summer (June) precipitation over the eastern Tibetan Plateau (TP) is identified through empirical orthogonal function. In contrast to previous researches, this paper introduces the May North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) as a preceding signal and investigates its connection with subsequent early summer precipitation over the eastern TP during 1980–2019, focusing on predictive aspects. Results reveal that the correlation between NAO and primary eastern TP precipitation pattern (Precip_EOF1) has weakened since 2000. During 1980–2000, an equivalent barotropic Silk Road Pattern (SRP) observed across Eurasia triggers southerly wind anomalies over the TP. This, in turn, leads to the northward shift of the water vapor, which favors the ascending motion over the northern TP (NTP) due to water vapor convergence. Additionally, the SRP-related sensible heating also plays a critical role in vertical motion over the eastern TP by enhancing the TP thermal effect. Consequently, these factors contribute to shaping the dipole pattern of eastern TP precipitation. However, the weakened relationship between NAO and Precip_EOF1 during 2001–2019 is attributed to the absence of NAO-related atmospheric circulation over Eurasia. Further analysis suggests that these circulation anomalies arise from the interdecadal variability of the NAO and its phase shift. Moreover, when the influence of sea surface temperature anomalies over the northern North Atlantic is removed, the correlation of Precip_EOF1 with NAO and Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation (AMO) both become insignificant. Tibetan Plateau (TP) snow cover is featured by sub‐seasonal changes, affecting weather and climate in surrounding and downstream areas. Previous studies emphasize the effect of background atmospheric circulation on rapid changes of TP snow cover as a whole. However, spatial discrepant changes of snow cover over the TP with complex topography and uneven snowfall remain unaddressed. Our research indicates that snow cover fraction dominates the rapid changes of surface albedo across the TP, and snow depth also significantly influences surface albedo changes through modulating snow albedo in central and eastern TP with shallow snow. However, the excessive snow amount and empirical snow cover fraction schemes introduce spatially divergent biases of surface albedo changes in simulations. Our research highlights the instant response of TP surface albedo to both snow coverage and depth in snow season, and provides a promising perspective for improving TP snow and surface albedo simulations. Based on 360 event-based precipitation samples collected at six stations on the North Tibetan Plateau (NTP) in 2019–2020, we analyzed the influence of meteorological parameters, sub-cloud evaporation, moisture sources, and moisture transmission pathways on precipitation and its seasonal variations. The results show that precipitation δ18O, δ2H, and d-excess values show obvious seasonal variations, being depleted in winter and enriched in summer. Although temperature is an important variable that affects the change in δ18O values of precipitation, the results of the sub-cloud evaporation effect and moisture tracing show that differences in moisture sources caused by seasonal changes in large-scale water moisture transport are an important cause of seasonal changes in δ18O and d-excess of precipitation at NTP. Depleted δ18O and enriched d-excess in winter represent the source of moisture transported by the westerlies from the Mediterranean area and Central Asia. Enriched δ18O and d-excess values in summer precipitation are related to the temperature effect. In addition, the meridional motion of the atmospheric flow has an effect on the precipitation isotope values in the NTP. When the meridional circulation is enhanced, the water vapour from low latitudes is easily transported northwards, enriching the summer precipitation isotope values in the central and eastern parts of the plateau. This study investigates the interdecadal change in the covariability between the Tibetan Plateau (TP) east–west dipole precipitation and Indian precipitation during summer and primarily explores the modulation of atmospheric circulation anomalies on the covariability. The results reveal that the western TP precipitation (WTPP), eastern TP precipitation (ETPP), and northwestern Indian precipitation (NWIP) have covariability, with an in-phase variation between the WTPP and NWIP and an out-of-phase variation between the WTPP and ETPP. Moreover, this covariability was unclear during 1981–2004 and became significant during 2005–2019, showing a clear interdecadal change. During 2005–2019, a thick geopotential height anomaly, which tilted slightly northward, governed the TP, forming upper- and lower-level coupled circulation anomalies (i.e., anomalous upper-level westerlies over the TP and lower-level southeasterlies and northeasterlies around the southern flank of the TP). As such, the upper- and lower-tropospheric circulation anomalies synergistically modulate the summer WTPP, ETPP, and NWIP, causing the covariability of summer precipitation over the TP and India during 2005–2019. The upper- or lower-level circulation anomalies cannot independently result in significant precipitation covariability. During 1981–2004, the upper- and lower-level circulation anomalies were not strongly coupled, which caused precipitation non-covariability. The sea surface temperature anomalies (SSTAs) in the western North Pacific (WNP) and tropical Atlantic (TA) may synergistically modulate the upper- and lower-level coupled circulation anomalies, contributing to the covariability of the WTPP, ETPP, and NWIP during 2005–2019. The modulation of the WNP and TA SSTs on the coupled circulation anomalies was weaker during 1981–2004, which was therefore not conducive to this precipitation covariability. This study may provide valuable insights into the characteristics and mechanisms of spatiotemporal variation in summer precipitation over the TP and its adjacent regions, thus offering scientific support for local water resource management, ecological environment protection, and social and economic development. The relationship between Arctic Oscillation (AO) and surface air temperature (SAT) over the Tibetan Plateau (TP) has been long debated, particularly in boreal summer. Based on the statistical analysis, this study reveals a significant interdecadal shift in the relationship between summer AO and the first mode of the summer SAT (SAT_EOF1) over the eastern TP in recent decades. Specifically, during 1979–1998, the correlation between summer AO and SAT_EOF1 was weak and insignificant, but during 1999–2018, it was strong and significant. Changes in the AO-related regional atmospheric circulations are responsible for this enhanced AO-SAT_EOF1 connection. During the latter period, the anomalous anticyclone related to AO has extended further westward from eastern China to the eastern TP, leading to the increased water vapor transport and prevalent descending over the eastern TP. As a result, there has been a decrease in cloud cover over the eastern TP, allowing more solar radiation to reach the ground surface and thus contributing to the enhanced AO-SAT_EOF1 linkage. Further analysis indicates that the phase transition of the Pacific decadal oscillation (PDO) is a crucial factor in regulating the AO-SAT_EOF1 linkage. Since the late 1990s, the PDO has transitioned from a positive to a negative phase, playing a role in the westward extension of the AO-related anomalous anticyclone over the eastern side of the TP through the Pacific-East Asian (PEA) teleconnection. The Three-River Headwater Region (TRHR) has undergone significant hydrological changes and affects the water resources security in the local and downstream areas. We use multiple observational precipitation product, as well as the ERA5 reanalysis dataset to investigate the precipitation variations over the TRHR during the rainy season from 1990 to 2020, and to analyze the contributions of local evaporation and remote water vapor transport to the precipitation and its variations. The precipitation shows a significant increasing trend (17.8 mm decade−1). The precipitation variability (PV) is larger at daily scale and smaller at interannual scale. The spatial distribution of PV varies on different timescales, which reflects the different dominant regimes driving the moisture transport. The mean precipitation in the TRHR is predominantly contributed by western and southern moisture influxes, and the increasing trend of these influxes (10.8 kg s−1 decade−1) determines the precipitation increase. Local evaporation provide about 6% of water vapor for the precipitation, while it has little influence on the precipitation change. The anomalous precipitation in wet and dry years is mainly controlled by the atmospheric circulation over the Tibetan Plateau, which regulates the southwestern moisture transport towards the TRHR. Additionally, the precipitation during 1990–2020 increases by about 3.9% compared to that during 1960–1989. It is related to the higher conversion ratio of water vapor influxes to precipitation and larger evaporation over the TRHR. These findings improve our understanding of the precipitation variations in the TRHR and provide insights for policy makers to optimize water resources management to cope with the global climate change. Overestimation of precipitation over steep mountains is always a common bias of atmospheric general circulation models (AGCMs). One basic reason is the imperfection of parameterization schemes. Sub-grid topography has a non-negligible role in the dynamics of the actual atmosphere, and therefore the sub-grid topographic parameterization schemes have been the focus of model development. This study proposes a sub-grid parameterization scheme for topographic vertical motion in CAM5-SE (Community Atmospheric Model version 5 with spectral element dynamical core) to revise the original vertical velocity by adding the topographic vertical motion, resulting in a significant improvement in simulations in precipitation over steep mountains. The results show a better improvement in precipitation simulation in steep mountains, such as the steep edge of the Tibetan Plateau and the Andes. The positive deviations of the precipitation on the mountain tops and the negative deviations in the windward slope are revised. The improved scheme of topographic vertical motion reduces the model biases of summer mean precipitation simulations by up to 48 % (6.23 mm d -1) on the mountain tops. The improvement in convective precipitation (4.83 mm d -1) contributes the most to the improvement in the total precipitation simulation. In addition, we extend the dynamic lifting effect of topography from the lowest layer (Single experiment) to multiple layers, approaching the bottom model layers (Multi experiment). Moreover, the water vapor transport in low-altitude regions in front of the windward slope is also considerably improved, leading to simulations of much more realistic circulation patterns in the multi-layer scheme. Since the sub-grid parameterization scheme addresses the more detailed problem caused by topography, the water vapor is transported further to the northwest in the multi-layer scheme. The topographic vertical motion schemes in both the Single and Multi experiments can improve the model performance in simulating precipitation in all regions with complex terrain. The Tibetan Plateau (TP), known as the "Third Pole," profoundly affects weather and climate at regional and global scales. In this study, we investigate the characteristics of heat waves in China and their association with the TP heat source. The results show that during the summertime from 1980 to 2020, the frequency of heat wave days that hit eastern China and northwest China increased at rates of 0.09 and 0.24 days yr−1, respectively, accompanied by an increase in the atmospheric heat source (AHS) over the TP by over 2 W m−2 yr−1 under the background of global warming. The enhanced TP heat source induces an anomalous upper-tropospheric anticyclone, which caused the western Pacific subtropical high and South Asia high to be stronger and closer to each other, causing descending motions over eastern China and consequently more heat waves. At the same time, the enhanced TP heat source weakened the westerlies, thereby favoring the occurrence and maintenance of the anticyclone centered in northwest China and creating more heat waves due to strong descending motions. Therefore, the association between the TP heat source and heat waves in China provides relevant information for studying the mechanism and future changes of heat waves. Significance Statement: The Tibetan Plateau significantly affects the surrounding weather and climate. We find that there are some linkages between the Tibetan heat source and heat waves in China. The stronger the Tibetan heat source is, the more heat waves hit China. The enhancement of the Tibetan heat source could induce an anomalous upper-tropospheric anticyclone by affecting the western Pacific subtropical high and South Asia high, consequently causing descending motions over eastern China and the resulting heat waves. The weaker westerly due to the enhanced Tibetan heat source favors the occurrence of the anticyclone centered in northwest China, leading to more heat waves by descending motions. This paper investigates the dynamical processes through which the Tibetan Plateau (TP) influences the East Asian summer monsoon (EASM) within the framework of the moist static energy (MSE) budget, using both observations and atmospheric general circulation model (AGCM) simulations. The focus is on the most prominent feature of the EASM, the so-called meiyu-baiu (MB), which is characterized by a well-defined, southwest-northeast elongated quasi-stationary rainfall band, spanning from eastern China to Japan and into the northwestern Pacific Ocean between mid-June and mid-July. Observational analyses of the MSE budget of the MB front indicate that horizontal advection of moist enthalpy, and primarily of dry enthalpy, sustains the front in a region of otherwise negative net energy input into the atmospheric column. A decomposition of the horizontal dry enthalpy advection into mean, transient, and stationary eddy fluxes identifies the longitudinal thermal gradient due to zonal asymmetries and the meridional stationary eddy velocity as the most influential factors determining the pattern of horizontal moist enthalpy advection. Numerical simulations in which the TP is either retained or removed show that the TP influences the stationary enthalpy flux, and hence the MB front, primarily by changing the meridional stationary eddy velocity, with reinforced southerly wind over the MB region and northerly wind to its north. Changes in the longitudinal thermal gradient are mainly confined to the near downstream of the TP, with the resulting changes in zonal warm air advection having a lesser impact on the rainfall in the extended MB region. In this paper, the possible reason of Tibetan Plateau (TP) temperature increasing was investigated. An increase in T (minimum temperature) plays a robust role in increased TP temperature, which is strongly related to SST over the warm pool of the western Pacific Ocean, the subtropical westerly jet stream (SWJ), and the tropical easterly upper jet stream (TEJ), and the 200-hPa zonal wind in East Asia. Composite analysis of the effects of SST, SWJ, and TEJ on pre- and post-abrupt changes in T (annual temperature) and T over the TP shows remarkable differences in SST, SWJ, and TEJ. A lag correlation between T/ T, SST, and SWJ/TEJ shows that changes in SST occur ahead of changes in T /T by approximately one to three seasons. Partial correlations between T/ T, SST, and SWJ/TEJ show that the effect of SWJ on T/ T is more significant than the effect of SST. Furthermore, simulations with a community atmospheric model (CAM3.0) were performed, showing a remarkable increase in T over the TP when the SST increased by 0.5°C. The main increase in T and T in the TP can be attributed to changes in SWJ. A possible mechanism is that changes in SST force the TEJ to weaken, move south, and lead to increased SWJ and movement of SWJ northward. Finally, changes in the intensity and location of the SWJ cause an increase in T/ T. It appears that TP warming is governed primarily by coherent TEJ and SWJ variations that act as the atmospheric bridges to remote SSTs in warm-pool forcing. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract Global warming has already had a significant impact on social ecosystems. The Tibetan Plateau (TP), which is characterized by a cryosphere, is also recognized to have a profound influence on regional and global climate systems, as well as the ecological economy. Therefore, research on the cryosphere is of significant importance. This paper comprehensively reviews the current status and recent changes of the cryosphere (e.g., glacier, snow cover, and frozen ground) in the TP from the perspectives of observations and simulations. Because of enhanced climate warming in the TP, a large portion of glaciers have experienced significant retreat since the 1960s, with obvious regional differences. The retreat is the smallest in the TP interior, and gradually increases towards the edges. Glacier simulations are comparatively few and still under development. Snow cover is a highly sensitive element of the cryosphere and decreases with large interdecadal variations from the 1960s to the 2010s in general. Simulations of snow cover mostly focus on the mutual feedback between the snow cover anomaly, climate and atmospheric circulation. In situ observations and simulations both indicate that the mean annual temperature of frozen ground increases, causing permafrost thaw and degradation and decreasing the seasonal freeze depth of seasonally frozen ground. Under future climate warming, the cryospheric elements in the TP will continue to diminish on the whole. Studies of climate and the cryosphere are ongoing. To date, the lack of observations is the biggest challenge on the TP, resulting in a divergence of cryosphere dynamics and its simulation being a bottleneck. To overcome these issues, a strategy that combines sets of in situ and remote sensing measurements and improved numerical models is of great importance for achieving breakthroughs with respect to research on the TP cryosphere and its interaction with climate. The climatological distribution of mesoscale convective systems (MCSs) over China and its vicinity during summer is statistically analyzed, based on the 10-year (1996-2006, 2004 excluded) June-August infrared TBB (Temperature of black body) dataset. Comparing the results obtained in this paper with the distribution of thunderstorms from surface meteorological stations over China and the distribution of lightning from low-orbit satellites over China and its vicinity in the previous studies, we find that the statistic characteristics of TBB less than -52°C can better represent the spatiotemporal distribution of MCSs over China and its vicinity during summer. The spreading pattern of the MCSs over this region shows three transmeridional bands of active MCSs, with obvious fluctuation of active MCSs in the band near 30°N. It can be explained by the atmospheric circulation that the three bands of active MCSs are associated with each other by the summer monsoon over East Asia. We focus on the diurnal variations of MCSs over different underlying sur- faces, and the result shows that there are two types of MCSs over China and its vicinity during summer. One type of MCSs has only one active period all day long (single-peak MCSs), and the other has multiple active periods (multi-peak MCSs). Single-peak MCSs occur more often over plateaus or mountains, and multi-peak MCSs are more common over plains or basins. Depending on lifetimes and active periods, single-peak MCSs can be classified as Tibetan Plateau MCSs, general mountain MCSs, Ryukyu MCSs, and so on. The diurnal variation of multi-peak MCSs is very similar to that of MCCs (mesoscale convective complexes), and it reveals that multi-peak MCSs has longer life cycle and larger horizontal scale, becomes weaker after sunset, and develops again after midnight. Tibetan Plateau MCSs and general mountain MCSs both usually develop in the afternoon, but Tibetan Plateau MCSs have longer life cycle and more active MαCSs. Ryukyu MCSs generally develop after midnight, last longer time, and also have more active MαCS. The abundant moisture and favorable large-scale environment over Indian monsoon surge areas lead to active MCSs and MαCSS almost at any hour all day during summer. Due to local mountain-valley breeze circulation over the Sichuan Basin, MCSs are developed remarkably more often during the nighttime, and again there are also more active MαCSS. Because of local prominent sea-land breeze circulation over Guangxi and Guangdong, the MCSs over this region propagate from sea to land in the afternoon and from land to sea after midnight. The statistic characteristics of TBB less than -52°C clearly display the different climatological characteristics of MCSs owing to the thermal difference among water, land and rough terrain. Not only the large-scale atmospheric circulation but also the local atmospheric circulation caused by the thermal difference among water, land and rough terrain, to a great extent, determines the climatological distribution of MCSs over China and its vicinity during summer. Estimating isotopic changes of river water on the Tibetan Plateau (TP) remains highly uncertain due to variable water sources related with seasonality of atmospheric circulations and local kinetic fractionation. The in‐depth understanding of such changes is crucial for accurate palaeoaltimetry reconstruction and for river budget evaluation which related with surviving of one‐fifth of the world's population under accelerated warming. Here, we present a comprehensive river water isotopic composition dataset (δ18O, δD and d‐excess, 1852 samples) over the TP to systematically describe spatial distribution and explore possible controlling factors of isotopic data in theses rivers. Results showed that δ18O in river water range from −20.8‰ to −5.2‰ (latitudinally, 0.92‰ per degree), enriching northwardly in the seven exorheic river basins. The d‐excess values range from −19.7‰ to 20.5‰ with the pronounced low values in endorheic rivers basins. We identified that moisture sources and atmospheric transports leave significant signals in isotopic compositions of river water in the Upper Brahmaputra (UB), Upper Mekong (UM) and Upper Yangtze (UYA) basins, and local processes modify the isotopic signals mainly in the Upper Salween (US), Upper Indus (UI), Upper Yellow (UYE) and Endorheic Rivers (ER) basins. The δ18O‐elevation relationships are only established in the UB, UI and UYE with lapse rates of −4.4‰/km, −3.4‰/km and −3.5‰/km, respectively. We suggest that as changes of moisture sources and lapse rates in different basins, it is cautious to apply δ18O‐elevation lapse rates for palaeoaltimetry reconstruction. The temperature rise during the growing season on the Tibetan Plateau (TP) is crucial for the local vegetation phenology and atmospheric circulation. In this study, we investigated the possible effects of soil moisture (SM) anomalies associated with the freeze–thaw process on the surface air temperature (SAT) rise during the growing season using observations and reanalysis data from 1979 to 2014. Results demonstrate that winter SM anomalies associated with the freeze–thaw process can persist until July, significantly modulating SAT rise intensity from May to July on the TP. Positive winter SM anomalies can lead to decreased in SAT in May but increased in SAT in July, thus strengthening the SAT rise from May to July. Further analysis of physical mechanisms suggest the positive winter SM anomaly leads to the increase of surface latent heat flux but the decrease of surface sensible heat flux in May, thus cooling the SAT. As July approaches, significantly increased atmospheric water vapor caused by the positive winter SM anomaly leads to the enhancement of surface downward longwave radiation, which exceeds the cooling effect of decreased sensible heat, resulting in a warmer SAT. Previous studies mainly revealed the "drier SM—higher SAT" feedback. Here we highlight that the thermal variations caused by SM anomalies related with the freeze–thaw process are complicated in the TP, with completely opposite climatic effects during different months. The Tibetan Plateau (TP) impacts local and remote atmospheric circulations, wherein it mechanically and thermally affects air masses or airflows. Moreover, the TP provides a key channel for substance transport between the troposphere and the stratosphere. This study reviews recent advances in research regarding land–atmosphere coupling processes over the TP. The TP experiences climate warming and wetting. Climate warming has caused glacier retreat, permafrost degradation, and a general increase in vegetation density, while climate wetting has led to a significant increase in the number of major lakes, primarily through increased precipitation. Local and regional climates are affected by interactions between the land and the atmosphere. Namely, the TP drives surface pollutants to the upper troposphere in an Asian summer monsoon (ASM) anticyclone circulation, before spreading to the lower stratosphere. Further, the thermal forcing of the TP plays an essential role in the ASM. TP forcing can modulate hemispheric‐scale atmospheric circulations across all seasons. The TP interacts with remote oceans through a forced atmospheric response and is substantially affected by the evolution of the Earth's climate via promoting Atlantic meridional overturning circulation and eliminating Pacific meridional overturning circulation. The extensive influence of the TP is facilitated by its coupling with the ASM in the summer; whereas its winter influence on climate mainly occurs through Rossby waves. The observed increasing trends of temperature and precipitation over the TP are projected to continue throughout the 21st century. The onset of the Tibetan Plateau rainy season (OTPRS) marks the transition from dry season to wet season in situ, which has a great impact on the water cycle and atmospheric heating in extensive areas. This analysis found that the earlier OTPRS is controlled by the weakened westerly wind, a dipole vortex pair with an anomalous anti‐cyclone over Lake Baikal but an anomalous cyclone over the Tibetan Plateau, the intensified southerly water vapour transportation on the southern edge of the Tibetan Plateau, the active convection and the increased humidity over the Tibetan Plateau in spring. And the opposite circulation anomalies correspond to the later OTPRS. The interannual variation in the OTPRS is closely related to sea surface temperature anomalies (SSTA) in the North Pacific in the previous winter, with the opposite phase between the 'tongue' extending eastward from the China East Sea and the surrounding 'semi‐circle' in the east. This pattern features the third leading mode of the winter SSTA in the North Pacific and can persist to spring. The vertical motion, convergence and divergence associated with the direct thermal effect from the significant SSTA centres in the southeastern and northwestern North Pacific form two opposite zonal circulation circles along 30°N. The zonal circulation circles bridge the SSTA in the North Pacific and the circulation anomalies over the Tibetan Plateau and have a delayed impact on convection over the Tibetan Plateau, thereby affecting the OTPRS. The Northern Hemisphere snow-cover (NHSC) interannual variability can serve as a crucial source of climate predictability. However, the spatiotemporal characteristics of the NHSC interannual variability and associated formation mechanism lack a thorough investigation using the latest reliable datasets. In this observationally based study, we identify the leading mode of the wintertime NHSC interannual variability and reveal the major determinants and mechanisms for forming the mode. Results show that the leading mode exhibits a hemispheric dipole pattern characterized by snow-cover anomalies in the central-eastern United States and Europe, contrary to those in the Tibetan Plateau (TP). Importantly, the leading mode of TP-only snow-cover variability is essentially a regional manifestation of the dipole NHSC anomaly pattern. The wintertime hemispheric atmospheric circulation anomaly mode, that is, the Arctic Oscillation (AO), primarily determines the dipole NHSC anomaly pattern via altering snowfall and snowmelt. During a positive phase of AO, an anomalous atmospheric anticyclone over the midlatitude North Atlantic favors increased warm-air advection over the central-eastern United States and Europe, reducing the snowfall and the snow cover there. Meanwhile, the anomalously warm atmospheric thermal condition in Europe accompanied by enhanced westerly moisture flux convergence tends to heat the underlying land surface via reducing upward sensible heat flux and increasing downward longwave radiation, thereby causing increased snowmelt and decreased snow cover in northeastern Europe. Associated with the aforementioned atmospheric circulation anomalies, an anomalous atmospheric cyclone prevailing over the TP tends to cause increased southeasterly moisture flux convergence, favoring snowfall and snow increase in the TP. During the recent decades, summer precipitation has increased over the western and northeastern Tibetan Plateau (TP) and decreased over the southeastern TP. This study investigates the effects of anthropogenic forcing and internal variability on summer rainfall changes over the TP during 1979–2013. It is shown that the variations in atmospheric circulation and precipitation over the TP are largely contributed by the anthropogenic forcing and oceanic boundary conditions and that the Interdecadal Pacific Oscillation (IPO) plays an important role in TP summer rainfall changes in recent decades. The anthropogenic forcing contributes to the drying trends over the southeastern TP and the wetting trends over the western and northeastern TP. The negative sea surface temperature (SST) anomalies in the tropical central-eastern Pacific induce a wave train consisting of anomalous cyclones and anticyclones over Eurasia. The anomalous anticyclone to the northeast TP weakens westerlies, facilitating the convergence of water vapor over the TP. Further analysis indicates that the IPO-related SST anomalies contribute partly to the uncertainty in simulations of summer rainfall changes over the TP in recent decades using a 40-member ensemble of the Community Earth System Model. Numerous studies have indicated that the atmospheric heat source (AHS) over the Tibetan Plateau (TP) is highly correlated with the western North Pacific anomalous anticyclone (WNPAC) in summer. However, such an interannual relationship has been weakened since the late 1990s. The present work shows that the TP AHS was significantly and positively correlated with the WNPAC during the period 1979–99 (P1), while this relationship became insignificant hereafter [2000–20 (P2)]. From an atmospheric perspective, we identify that the long-term change in the upper-level atmospheric circulation over the TP is an important cause for weakening the relationship. An obvious upper-level anticyclonic trend occurred over the northeastern TP in the past four decades, with an easterly trend on the anticyclone’s southern flank, with anomalous westerlies during P1 but anomalous easterlies during P2 over the main portion of the TP. With the anomalous upper-level westerlies in P1, abnormal high pressure induced by the TP heating (i.e., AHS) extended downstream in the upper troposphere. Subsequently, anomalous descending motions formed over the northwestern Pacific due to the eastward-extended high pressure, together with the vertical transport of negative relative vorticity, favorable for the enhancement of the WNPAC. In P2, the TP heating-induced abnormal high pressure was confined over the southern TP due to the anomalous easterlies, suppressing its downstream influence and finally breaking the connection between the TP AHS and the WNPAC. Modeling results from both linear baroclinic model (LBM) sensitivity experiments and the CESM Large Ensemble dataset further confirm the important role of the change in background circulation in weakening the relationship. The Tibetan Plateau (TP), being an average of surpassing 4000 m above sea level and around 2.5 × 10 6  km 2 , is the highest and largest plateau in the world and also called as the “Third Pole”. Due to its elevated land surface and complex terrain, the TP is subjected to combined regulations of multiple climate systems and associated large-scale atmospheric circulations. In this paper, we comprehensively review the recent studies of atmospheric moisture transport versus precipitation across the TP, with the attempt to link the two, which did not receive much attention previously. This review focuses on the atmospheric moisture transport and associated circulation patterns in this region, widely adopted approaches to identify the atmospheric moisture transport, qualitative and quantitative analyses for the role of water vapor transport on the precipitation, as well as the internal physical mechanism between atmospheric moisture transport and precipitation over the TP. Moreover, directions of future research are discussed based on the following aspects, which include 1) proposing an integrated statistical-physical framework for demonstrating the influence of atmospheric moisture transport and associated circulation patterns on the precipitation, especially the extremes, in the high-cold mountainous region; 2) quantifying the contribution of atmospheric water vapor from the surrounding sources as well as the local moisture recycling on the TP's precipitation; 3) providing higher quality data for atmospheric water vapor and precipitation; 4) emphasizing on the physical mechanism sustaining the atmospheric moisture transport as well as its potential influence on the extreme precipitation, including amount, frequency, intensity and duration. This study examines daily longitudinal locations of South Asia High (SAH) in September and its connection with Asian September rainfall variation. Results suggest that daily longitudinal locations of September SAH exhibits as bimodality, which is featured by two preferable locations with one high‐frequency location lying over southern Tibetan Plateau and the other over southern Iranian Plateau. Referred to the two preferred locations, the SAH is classified into east and west SAH mode. The two modes may be attributed to a warm column over central eastern Tibetan or eastern Iranian Plateau, which warms the above troposphere and maintains a SAH at upper troposphere over corresponding location. In addition, bimodality of the SAH has a close relationship with Asian September rainfall. The east mode of SAH is associated with an increasing rainfall over western China and decreasing rainfall over northern Indian Peninsula, southwestern Tibetan Plateau, Indochina Peninsula, eastern China and Korea Peninsula, while the west mode of SAH is linked with the reverse pattern. Specifically, the atmospheric circulation at upper troposphere is featured by one large anticyclonic circulation above eastern Tibetan Plateau and two cyclonic circulations over northern Iranian Plateau and eastern Korea. In the lower troposphere, southerly and northerly anomalies form a convergence zone over western China. Meantime, a cyclonic moisture circulation with warm and wet southerly vapour flow results in above‐normal rainfall over western China. An anticyclone over northern Iranian Plateau at lower troposphere results in an anticyclonic moisture divergence and deficient rainfall over southwestern Tibetan Plateau and northern India. Moreover, a cyclonic circulation over eastern Korea Peninsula with marked northwesterly and moisture flux divergence results in below‐normal rainfall over eastern China and Korea Peninsula. The influence of mid–high-latitude intraseasonal variability (ISV) on the occurrence frequency of the Northeast China cold vortex (NCCV) in early summer was examined through statistical analysis and thermal–dynamic diagnostics. A multivariable empirical orthogonal function (MVEOF) was employed to extract the thermal–pressure coupled ISV mode. Our results show that the geopotential height and air temperature over the NCCV active region exhibit a statistically significant intraseasonal periodicity of 20–60 days. The dominant ISV mode features a westward-propagated zonal dipole pattern, which is generated over the Lake Baikal region and triggered by intraseasonal wave energy accumulation. By dividing the ISV cycle into eight phases, it is found that more NCCVs with a large scope occur in phases 5–8 than those in phases 1–4. The positive (negative) geopotential height and air temperature tendencies in phases 1–4 (5–8) act to suppress (facilitate) the NCCV activity. The thermodynamic tendency budget and scale decomposition reveal that when an anomalous intraseasonal cyclonic circulation propagates westward from Lake Baikal to the Ural Mountains, the anomalous southwesterly transports mean negative vorticity from the north side of the Tibetan Plateau to Northeast Asia and transports mean warm air temperature from low latitudes to high latitudes, leading to the positive geopotential height and air temperature tendencies and thereby restraining the NCCV activity. The opposite is also true for the facilitation of the NCCV modulated by the negative geopotential height and air temperature tendencies. Significance Statement: The purpose of this study is to better understand the factors controlling the Northeast China cold vortex (NCCV) activity in early summer. It is important because influences of the subtropical monsoonal circulation are usually confined to southern China in this season and the anomalous atmospheric circulation from the mid–high latitudes plays a more important role in the generation of the NCCV. Based on the definition of potential vorticity substance (W) and its equation, an index "iPV" representing the leading mode of the surface potential vorticity circulation (PVC) over the Tibetan Plateau is defined to characterize the orographic potential vorticity (PV) forcing on the atmospheric general circulation. The relationships between the iPV index and the East Asian monsoon in July, as well as the Silk Road pattern in Eurasia, are investigated on an interannual time scale. Results show that the iPV in July is closely related to the interannual variability of the East Asian monsoon. Corresponding to the positive phase of iPV with negative (positive) PVC over the north (south) of the plateau, strong positive PV anomalies and westerly flows develop in the troposphere over the plateau. Consequently, in the downstream region, the zonal PV advection increases with height just above the Jianghuai Meiyu front, which is conducive to the generation of upward movement. Over the East Asian area, the upper troposphere is controlled by the eastward shifted South Asian High. In the lower troposphere, the southwesterly flow anomaly on the northwestern side of the strengthened western Pacific subtropical high transports abundant water vapor to the north, forming a convergence in the Jianghuai area, leading to the formation of large-scale precipitation along the Meiyu front. Results from partial correlation analysis also demonstrate that the link between the variability of the East Asian monsoon in July and the plateau PV forcing is affected very little by the Silk Road pattern, whereas the plateau PV forcing plays a key "bridging" role in the influence of the Silk Road pattern on the East Asian monsoon. Both South Asia and East Asia are the most polluted regions of the world. Unlike East Asia, the aerosol optical depth (AOD) over South Asia keeps increasing for all recent years, which calls for more attention. This study investigates the impacts of anthropogenic emissions over South Asia on the downstream regional climate during spring with the Community Earth System Model 2 (CESM2). The model results suggest that South Asian pollutants have significant impacts on East Asian spring climate, and the impacts could be even larger than locally emitted aerosols. Two possible dynamical pathways (i.e., the northern and the southern pathways) bridging South Asian aerosol forcing and East Asian climate are proposed, and both ways are associated with the black carbon (BC)-induced climate feedbacks surrounding the Tibetan Plateau (TP). The northern pathway is mainly due to the TP warming induced by the BC snow darkening effect (SDE), which significantly reduces the surface air temperature (SAT) over northern East Asia. BC-induced TP warming increases the meridional thermal gradient and accelerates the midlatitude jet stream, which favors the cold-air advection over northern East Asia. The southern pathway is associated with the BC "elevated heat pump" hypothesis, which mainly affects the precipitation in southern East Asia. BC from South Asia accumulates near the south slope of TP, inducing an abnormal ascending motion near the Bay of Bengal. A compensating anomalous sinking motion is then forced in South China, which suppresses the precipitation there. A primary observational analysis is also performed to verify both dynamical pathways. Changes in summer precipitation over the Tibetan Plateau (TP) significantly influence the surface runoff, river discharge and water availability for the downstream Asian countries, which is sensitive to external forcing. But its response to volcanic eruptions remains unknown. Here we investigate the summer precipitation changes after tropical volcanic eruptions over the TP region by using multiple lines of evidence including reconstructions over the last hundreds of years, observations during recent decades and model simulations covering the last millennium. Both the instrumental data and reconstructions reveal a significant reduction in summer precipitation over the southern TP region during the first summer following tropical volcanic eruptions, which are further confirmed by the coupled model simulations driven by volcanic forcing. The model results indicate that both the dynamic processes related to atmospheric circulation changes and the thermodynamic processes related to specific humidity changes contribute to the decreased precipitation in the southwestern TP, while the thermodynamic process dominates the reduction of precipitation in the southeastern TP. The thermodynamic process results from decreased atmospheric precipitable water caused by decreased surface temperature after tropical volcanic eruptions. The dynamic processes are caused by increased gross moist stability, spatial distribution of surface cooling and a southward shift of westerlies related to weakening and shrinking of Hadley circulation following tropical eruptions. Our results imply that major tropical eruptions have significant impact on the summer precipitation over the southern TP regions, which will further decrease the source of supply for the TP glaciers and runoff output. Extreme precipitation events frequently occur at the southeastern edge of the Tibetan Plateau (SETP), causing severe disasters. In this study, we selected the top 100 regional extreme precipitation events over the SETP region during the period of 2001–2020, and analyzed their evolutionary characteristics of large-scale thermodynamic anomalies prior to the extreme precipitation events occurring, with the aim of exploring their precursor signals. The results show that, accompanying the wave train propagating across the Eurasian continent and reaching East Asia, the extreme events over SETP during the summer season are dominated by the background large-scale atmospheric circulations characterized by the strengthened Southern Asia high (SAH), the westward-extended Western Pacific subtropical high (WPSH), and an intensified eastern Asia trough. Additionally, an analogue of low-level vortex embedded in the background large-scale circulations is developed at least 4 days prior to the occurrence of extreme events. Under the combined effects of these anomalies, the warm and cold air converge in the SETP area. Further analysis also suggests that the upper-troposphere divergence aloft combined with lower pressures at surface level lead to the upward vertical motion of circulations, along with the enhanced water-vapor transport conveyed both by the East Asian summer monsoon and the Indian summer monsoon. Slope and aspect are important topographic elements for thermodynamics and dynamics of atmospheric circulation, especially for local radiation and topographic precipitation. We propose a simple realistic statistical method based on trigonometric function transformation to calculate sub-grid slope and aspect for describing the orographic characteristics of complex areas over the globe. It is found that the transformed conditional probability density function conforms to the Gaussian distribution in most of the global areas (~ 98%), and this feature is not eliminated with the increasing of horizontal resolution. The reasonability of this method is tested over the Tibetan Plateau. The results show that the improvement ratio of surface solar radiation downward (SSRD) over the Tibetan Plateau improved significantly compared with the results from the grid average scheme, especially in autumn. The improvement of root mean square error is approximately 18.2 W/m2, and the improvement ratio reached 38.4%. The improvements of maximum and regional-averaged SSRD over the whole Tibetan Plateau were ~ 130 W/m2 and ~ 44.3 W/m2 respectively. Although we only consider the effect of sub-grid slope and aspect on solar shortwave radiation, which has a certain bias with the observation data, it is sufficient to prove the rationality of the statistical method compared with the unobstructed horizontal surfaces scheme. To aid the understanding of atmospheric circulation climatology over the Tibetan Plateau (TP), this study investigated the comprehensive potential vorticity (PV) budget over the TP using model‐level reanalysis data. Our findings demonstrate the effects of diabatic heating, friction, gravity wave drag, advection, and convection in determining circulation over the TP, from the PV budget perspective. In summer, the diabatic heating‐generated positive (negative) PV tendency facilitates cyclonic (anticyclonic) circulation near the surface (in the middle troposphere). Low PV in the upper troposphere, pertaining to the Asian monsoon anticyclone and monsoonal overturning circulation is induced by the upward transportation of diabatic heating‐generated low PV in the middle troposphere. Horizontal advection further spreads the low PV—that is vertically inputted from the middle troposphere—to a wide area around the TP in the upper troposphere. In winter, the diabatic heating‐generated positive PV near the surface is balanced by the sinking motion‐carried low PV. In addition, gravity wave drag‐generated PV is prominent in the upper troposphere in winter and can affect the downstream climate through advection. We further revealed the crucial role of the diurnal cycle in shaping the near‐surface cyclonic circulation in summer by regulating the vertical structure of diabatic heating. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The wave activity flux representing the energy propagation direction of planetary Rossby wave generally originates from a large wave source area. This study investigates the interdecadal variability and formation mechanism of Rossby wave source over the Tibetan Plateau (TP-RWS) and its impact on the atmospheric circulation and precipitation pattern in East Asia based on the ERA-20C reanalysis dataset in summer (June–July–August) during 1900 to 2010. Results show that the region with the maximum variabilities of Rossby wave source (RWS) in the past 110 years appears over the Tibetan Plateau (TP) during boreal summer, and the TP-RWS shows prominent characteristics of interdecadal oscillation. Secondly, the TP-RWS is mainly composed of the vortex stretching term (RWS-S1) and the absolute vorticity advection term (RWS-S2). The interdecadal TP-RWS is a synergistic result of the snow cover over northwestern TP associated with the RWS-S1, and the deep convection over southeastern TP associated with the RWS-S2. Furthermore, the interdecadal TP-RWS can lead to an alternatively positive and negative pattern of geopotential height anomalies from the northwestern TP to the North Pacific, which has a great climate effect on the precipitation in Huang-huai River Basin, South Korea and Japan Island. Under the guidance of the anomalous cyclonic circulation in East Asia, the prevailing southerly and easterly winds occur over the West Pacific and the Huang-huai River Basin, which lead to the water vapor convergence and upward movement at middle and lower troposphere. Snow on the Tibetan Plateau (TP) is an important signal for the prediction of East Asian climate. In this study, the relationship between the TP spring snowmelt and spring and summer precipitation in Northwest China (NWC) was investigated, along with the possible mechanisms linked to the impacts of snowmelt on precipitation. The results showed that the TP spring snowmelt had significant impacts on spring and summer precipitation in NWC. For example, when there was a large spring snowmelt in the central- eastern TP, the spring and summer precipitation in the Hexi Corridor and southeast NWC was excessive, especially in summer; when there was a large spring snowmelt in the northern TP, the spring and summer precipitation was deficient across the whole of NWC, while a large spring snowmelt in the western TP led to deficient spring and summer precipitation in eastern NWC but excessive precipitation in western NWC. The possible mechanisms for this included the fact that more spring snowmelt over the TP led to higher soil moisture contents, which further resulted in weakened subtropical westerly and enhanced ridge over Xinjiang. By changing the TP thermal forcing, these anomalous atmospheric circulation conditions transported water vapor into NWC, thus creating excessive summer precipitation in that region. Tibetan Plateau (TP) precipitation is affected by anomalous circulation systems in both the tropics and mid-latitudes, due to the TP's unique geographical location. By using observational, reanalysis, and CMIP6 model datasets, this study reveals the individual and joint effects of the Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD) and Silk Road pattern (SRP) on the interannual variability of TP precipitation in September. In the positive IOD phase, the zonal gradient of the sea-surface temperature anomalies (SSTAs) drives a Gill-type response with an anticyclonic anomaly over the Indian subcontinent and Bay of Bengal. To the north, anomalous westerlies induce a shallow trough, and the associated anomalous southwesterlies transport moisture to the southeastern TP, resulting in surplus precipitation there. Meanwhile, the westerly jet disturbances over the North Atlantic excite an SRP-like pattern, resulting in a baroclinic structure in northern India with the upper (lower) tropospheric anomalous anticyclone (cyclone) over west-central Asia (northern India). The anomalous southwesterlies to the east of the low-level cyclone transport abundant moisture to the southeastern TP, which results in increased precipitation there. The joint effects of IOD and SRP can explain nearly 52% of the TP precipitation anomaly, exceeding the contribution of IOD (19%) and SRP (27%) alone. Our results highlight the necessity of considering the joint effects of drivers in the tropics and mid-latitudes, providing a basis for more accurate simulations and predictions of TP precipitation. Previous studies indicate observed influences of autumn and winter Tibetan Plateau (TP) snow-cover anomalies on the winter Pacific–North American (PNA) teleconnection. This study simulates atmospheric and oceanic responses to persistent autumn–winter TP snow forcing using an atmospheric general circulation model (AGCM) and a coupled atmospheric-oceanic general circulation model (AOGCM), and quantifies the role of atmosphere–ocean interactions over North Pacific in TP snow effects. The AOGCM experiment induces a stronger and more realistic remote PNA response to heavy TP snow anomalies, and also a significant winter horseshoe-like North Pacific sea surface temperature (SST) pattern resulting from an anomalous equivalent barotropic cyclone, or a strengthened Aleutian low, with associated cyclonic wind stress anomalies. The horseshoe-like SST anomaly pattern is used as boundary forcing (without prescribed heavy TP snow) in another AOGCM experiment, which simulates an enhanced winter Aleutian low and a PNA-like response similar to the original AOGCM responses, indicating that that the direct Pacific–North American atmospheric response to persistent TP snow forcing in the AGCM is amplified in the AOGCM by the North Pacific midlatitude atmosphere–ocean interactions. This suggests that the mechanisms of the winter PNA responses to TP snow forcing involve dynamical atmospheric processes such as horizontal propagation of Rossby wave energy and transient eddy feedbacks, and also North Pacific atmosphere–ocean interactions, which provide a positive feedback on the development of the remote PNA teleconnection. Frozen soil distributed over alpine cold regions causes obvious changes in the soil hydrothermal regime and influences the water–heat exchanges between land and atmosphere. In this study, by comparing the effects of snow cover anomalies and frozen soil thawing anomalies on the soil hydrothermal regime, the impact of the frozen soil thawing anomalies in spring on precipitation in early summer over the Tibetan Plateau (TP) was investigated via diagnostic analysis and model simulations. The results show that a delay (advance) in the anomalies of frozen soil thawing in spring can induce distinct cold (warm) anomalies in the soil temperature in the eastern TP. These soil temperature cold (warm) anomalies further weaken (enhance) the surface diabatic heating over the mideastern TP; meanwhile, the anomalies in the western TP are inconspicuous. Compared to the albedo effect of snow cover anomalies, impacts of frozen soil thawing anomalies on soil hydrothermal regime and surface diabatic heating can persist longer from April to June. Corresponding to the anomalous delay (advance) of frozen soil thawing, the monsoon cell is weakened (enhanced) over the southern and northern TP, resulting in less (more) water vapor advection over the eastern TP and more (less) water vapor advection over the southwestern TP. This difference in water vapor advection induces a west–east reversed pattern of precipitation anomalies in June over the TP. The results have potential for improving our understanding of the interactions between the cryosphere and climate in cold regions. Significance Statement: Frozen soil and snow are widely distributed over alpine and high-latitude cold regions, and their feedbacks to climate have attracted much attention. The purpose of this study is to investigate the role of frozen soil in effects of snow cover anomalies on surface diabatic heating and its feedback to subsequent precipitation over the Tibetan Plateau. The results highlight that frozen soil modulates the effect of snow cover anomalies on the soil hydrothermal regime from April to June and interseasonal variations of frozen soil thawing anomaly zones result in a thermal contrast between the western and eastern Tibetan Plateau, which further lead to a reversed pattern of early summer precipitation anomalies over the Tibetan Plateau. Despite knowledge of the presence of the Tibetan Plateau (TP) in reorganizing large-scale atmospheric circulation, it remains unclear how surface albedo darkening over TP will impact local glaciers and remote Asian monsoon systems. Here, we use a coupled land-atmosphere global climate model and a glacier model to address these questions. Under a high-emission scenario, TP surface albedo darkening will increase local temperature by 0.24 K by the end of this century. This warming will strengthen the elevated heat pump of TP, increasing South Asian monsoon precipitation while exacerbating the current "South Flood-North Drought" pattern over East Asia. The albedo darkening-induced climate change also leads to an accompanying TP glacier volume loss of 6.9%, which further increases to 25.2% at the equilibrium, with a notable loss in western TP. Our findings emphasize the importance of land-surface change responses in projecting future water resource availability, with important implications for water management policies. The influence of the Madden–Julian oscillation (MJO) on precipitation over the Tibetan Plateau (TP) during boreal summer is investigated using observational and reanalysis data during 1980–2020. The results show that summer precipitation over most areas of the eastern TP increases (decreases) in MJO Phases 1–2 (5–6), especially when the eastward-propagating MJO active convection is located over the Indian Ocean (Western Pacific) in Phase 2 (6). The most significant negative precipitation anomalies in Phase 4 (8) are located over the southern (northeastern) TP. Moreover, MJO has a relatively weakened effect on the TP summer precipitation in Phases 3 and 7 when its convection migrates to the eastern Indian Ocean and the western–central Pacific, respectively. The MJO-phase dependence of the TP summer precipitation anomalies is closely associated with the anomalous atmospheric circulation and evolution of the horizontal moisture flux convergence directly induced by MJO. When the MJO convection centers are located over the western Indian Ocean and the Pacific, high-level anticyclonic and low-level cyclonic anomalous circulations over the TP are excited. In contrast, when MJO locates over the Indian Ocean and the Maritime Continent, its diabatic heating can inspire high-level cyclonic and low-level anticyclonic circulation anomalies over the TP. The vertical motions and moisture transport from the Bay of Bengal caused by the MJO-excited large-scale circulation can modulate the TP summer precipitation.
