Background: Patients with right hemisphere damage (RHD) may exhibit mild unilateral spatial neglect (USN), which is difficult to detect in general assessments performed during driving rehabilitation., Objectives: We compared driving simulator performance, practical driving performance, and neuropsychological test results between patients with RHD who were able and unable to return to driving to predict driving fitness based on driving simulator performance., Methods: This unmatched case-control study included 29 patients with RHD who were able (return-to-driving group, n  = 16) and unable (non-return-to-driving group, n  = 13) to return to driving. Patient demographics, motor function, attention, driving simulator performance (participants' reaction time and rate to green lamps appearing in any of the three displays and average lane position), and practical driving performance were compared between the groups. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis was performed to examine the predictive performance of driving fitness in reaction rate and paper-and-pencil tests., Results: The non-return-to-driving group had a significantly lower reaction rate than the return-to-driving group ( p  = 0.027; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0-7; r  = 0.407). No significant difference in reaction time or lane position in either the left or right lane during driving simulation was observed. ROC analysis of the reaction rate in the driving simulator task showed sensitivity of 0.692, specificity of 0.812, and area under the curve of 0.738 [95% CI, 0.541-0.935]., Conclusions: Decreases in reaction rates during simulated driving assessments are associated with an inability to resume driving in patients with RHD. Such assessments may aid in predicting fitness for driving in these patients.

Elevated indoor levels of CO 2 and the presence of body odor have been shown to have adverse effects on the cognitive function of building occupants. These factors may also contribute to impaired in-car driving performance, potentially posing a threat to transportation and public safety. To investigate the effects of CO 2 and body odor on driving performance, we enrolled 25 participants in highway driving tasks under three indoor CO 2 levels (800, 1800, and 3500 ppm) and two body odor conditions (presence and absence). CO 2 was injected in the cabin to increase CO 2 levels. In addition, we assessed working memory and reaction time using N-back tasks during driving. We found that driving speed, acceleration, and lateral control were not significantly affected by either CO 2 or body odor. We observed no significant differences in sleepiness or emotion under varying CO 2 or body odor conditions, except for a lower level of emotion valence with exposure to body odor. Task load was also not significantly impacted by CO 2 or body odor levels, except for a higher reported effort at 1800 ppm compared to 800 ppm CO 2 . However, participants did demonstrate significantly higher accuracy with increased body odor exposure, suggesting a complex effect of volatile organic compounds on driver cognition. Our findings also revealed moderating effects of task difficulty of N-back tests and exposure duration on cognition and driving performance. Individuals and society are dependent on transportation. Individuals move about their world for work, school, healthcare, social activities, religious and athletic events, and so much more. Society requires the movement of goods, food, medicine, etc. for basic needs, commerce, cultural and political exchanges, and all of its dynamic, complex elements. To meet these critical daily demands, the transportation system operates globally and around the clock. Regardless of their role, a basic requirement for the individuals operating the transportation system is that they are awake and at optimal alertness. This applies to individuals driving their own cars, riding a bike or motorcycle, as well as pilots of commercial aircraft, train engineers, long-haul truck drivers, and air traffic controllers. Alert operators are a basic requirement for a safe and effective transportation system. Decades of scientific and operational research have demonstrated that the 24/7 scheduling demands on operators and passengers of our transportation system create sleep and circadian disruptions that reduce alertness and performance and cause serious safety problems. These challenges underly the longstanding interest in transportation safety by the sleep and circadian scientific community. An area currently offering perhaps the most significant opportunities and challenges in transportation safety involves vehicle technology innovations. This paper provides an overview of these latest innovations with a focus on sleep-relevant issues and opportunities. Drowsy driving is discussed, along with fatigue management in round-the-clock transportation operations. Examples of cases where technology innovations could improve or complicate sleep issues are discussed, and ongoing sleep challenges and new safety opportunities are considered., (© The Author(s) 2023. Introduction: According to the Federal Highway Administration, a quarter of fatal collisions has occurred at horizontal curves. The average collision rate at horizontal curves was found to be three times higher than other types of highway segments. The lack of compliance with the speed limit and driver-related factors are among the main contributing factors to those collisions. Vehicle to Infrastructure (V2I) communications can address these limitations by providing drivers with valuable in-vehicle warning messages based on operational and safety data. There is limited effort investigating the impact of different types of V2I warning messages at horizontal curves and among different profiles of drivers. This study aims to thoroughly examine drivers' behavior and compliance with different V2I warning messages when approaching horizontal curves., Methods: A driving simulator experiment and self-reported survey were conducted. Three main hypotheses were analyzed in this study. First, whether supplying drivers with in-vehicle V2I warning messages will positively affect drivers' behavior at horizontal curves compared to the standard road signs. Second, whether there will be a significant difference in drivers' behavior when receiving text and audio V2I warning messages. Third, whether seniors and female drivers will comply more with speed limit advisory provided through V2I message than younger and male drivers., Results: The Analysis of Covariance confirmed the first two hypotheses. Two main measures of drivers' behavior found to be lower in the V2I communication scenarios compared to the base one. The audio warning message was found to be more promising in increasing drivers' compliance with speed limit advisory when approaching the curves. Introduction: Speed is a primary contributing factor in teenage driver crashes. Yet, there are significant methodological challenges in measuring real-world speeding behavior., Method: This case study approach analyzed naturalistic driving data for six teenage drivers in a longitudinal study that spanned the learner and early independent driving stages of licensure in Maryland, United States. Trip duration, travel speed and length were recorded using global position system (GPS) data. These were merged with maps of the Maryland road system, which included posted speed limit (PSL) to determine speeding events in each recorded trip. Speeding was defined as driving at the speed of 10 mph higher than the posted speed limit and lasting longer than 6 s. Using these data, two different speeding measures were developed: (1) Trips with Speeding Episodes, and (2) Verified Speeding Time. Conclusions & Practical Applications: Across both measures, speeding behavior during independent licensure was greater than during the learner period. These measures improved on previous methodologies by using PSL information and eliminating the need for mapping software. Introduction: Loss of attention leads to less steady driving within the lane and is one of the main causes of road accidents. To improve road safety, vehicle-based parameters such as steering wheel angle and lateral position are used to objectively assess driving performance, especially in monotonous driving tasks., Method: The present driving simulator study investigated the extent to which eight commonly used parameters are independent indicators of driving performance. Fifteen participants undertook a monotonous highway driving task for 1 h. Four steering angle parameters were examined: average steering angle (ASA), standard deviation of steering angle (SDSA), steering angle range (SAR), and steering reversal rate (SRR); as well as four lateral position parameters: mean lateral position (MLP), standard deviation of lateral position (SDLP), lateral position range (LPR), and the out-of-lane duration. Measurements were averaged across 2-minute epochs. Repeated measures correlation analysis evaluated the similarity between each parameter, and the variance inflation factor test evaluated the multicollinearity of all the parameters., Results: The results demonstrated that some parameters are highly correlated and should not be used together to assess driving performance. It is recommended that the optimal combination is ASA and SAR to assess steering angle, and SDLP and out-of-lane to assess lateral position. Background: When cyclists and drivers share the road drivers sometimes try to make the cyclist give way. This study assessed which characteristics and attitudes are related to pushy driving., Methods: The sample included 695 drivers aged 18 to 85 years who answered a German online questionnaire on pushy driving. They saw a sketch with a cyclist in front of them whom they could not overtake easily. They reported how often they engage in different pushy driving behaviors and how legitimate and effective these are. They provided information about their mobility habits, goals, and attitudes., Results: Correlations between reported frequency, perceived legitimacy, and perceived effectiveness of pushy driving were between r = 0.78 and r = 0.80. Many correlations with pushy driving were of medium size: drivers with the goal to drive safe and friendly reported less pushy driving, drivers with the goal to get the cyclist out of the way reported more. The correlations between reported frequency of pushy driving and attitude toward cyclists, self-justification, victim blaming, and feeling bothered by cyclists in built-up areas were of medium size., Summary: The highest correlations with pushy driving were those with perceived legitimacy and perceived effectiveness of pushy driving. The results show that pushy drivers cannot be identified by demographic characteristics or mobility habits. General attitudes and the perception of pushy behaviors in specific situations and drivers' goals in these situations are more important., Discussion: There will always be roads that cyclists and drivers share. Safety assessment is an active research subject for autonomous vehicles (AVs) that have emerged as a new mode of mobility. In particular, scenario-based safety assessments have garnered significant attention. AVs can be tested on how they safely avoid hypothetical situations leading to accidents. However, scenarios written by humans based on their expert knowledge and experience may only partially reflect real-world situations. Instead, we are keen on a different technique of extracting statistically significant and more detailed scenarios from sensor data captured during the critical moments when AVs become vulnerable to potential accidents. Specifically, we first render the three-dimensional space around an AV with fixed-sized voxels. Then, we modeled the aggregate kinetics of the objects in each voxel detected by 3D-LiDAR sensors mounted on real test AVs. The Vision Transformer we used to model the kinetics helped us quickly pinpoint critical voxels containing objects that threatened the AV's safety. We traced the trajectory of the critical voxels on a visual attention map to describe in detail how AVs become vulnerable to accidents according to the logical scenario format defined by the PEGASUS Project. We tested our novel method with 250 h of 3D-LiDAR recordings capturing critical moments. We devised an inference model that detected critical situations with an F1-score of 98.26%. For each type of scenario, our model consistently identified the critical objects and their tendency to influence AVs. Road vehicles are highly susceptible to single-vehicle crashes (SVCs) under complex road geometry and inclement weather, which can significantly threaten traffic safety and mobility of the whole traffic system. Most existing studies involve various simplifications and approximations to assess the associated SVC risks promptly, and therefore the assessment accuracy is often compromised. A novel multi-fidelity approach is developed for the reliability-based risk assessment of SVCs to balance the simulation accuracy and efficiency. Specifically, a high-fidelity transient dynamic vehicle model is introduced for a robust estimation of the vehicle dynamics under various driving environments, assisted by a low-fidelity simplified physics-based vehicle model to improve the computational efficiency. Based on the simulations of the two models, a new multi-fidelity improved cross entropy-based importance sampling (MFICE) algorithm is proposed for integrating multi-fidelity information and facilitating accurate and efficient reliability analysis. Five demonstrative cases are studied to evaluate the performance of the proposed approach, including the comparison with existing representative approaches. The results show that the proposed innovative multi-fidelity approach can provide a reliability evaluation of SVCs both accurately and efficiently, with obviously superior performance over typical state-of-the-art counterparts. Introduction: Speeding is considered to be a major contributor to road fatalities and injuries worldwide. Inappropriate speeding behavior is associated with a high casualty burden. It could be responsible for at least 30% of road accidents., Method: In 2018, the French authorities decided to introduce a new speed limit. They lowered the speed limit to 80 km/h on the unseparated interurban network. The aim was to reduce the number of fatalities and injuries and to implement some measures in line with international commitments. This paper uses different econometric models applied to time series for different groups of counties., Results: The results show a significant positive contribution of the new speed limit. The estimated number of lives saved is between 300 and 350. The overall reduction in the number of fatalities is 10%. The results also show a differentiated impact according to the local context and the different dynamics at play., Conclusions and Practical Applications: The results of this paper are in line with the scientific literature on speed limit reductions. Existing studies identified targeted audiences showing increases in Automated Vehicles (AV) acceptance after experiencing automated driving. However, there is still uncertainty regarding the reasons. Although some studies cited safety as the primary reason, there is no objective evidence from safety performance in verifying its impact on AV acceptance. This study contributes to the literature by quantitatively revealing why AV acceptance is changed after experiencing automated driving via a Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) method and objectively validating that safety is the primary factor in determining AV acceptance. Sixty drivers completed driving tasks on a driving simulator under Levels 0, 4, 3, and 2 and survey questions in between. As a result, the safety-related perceptions of AV were identified as reasons for affecting AV acceptance. Driving under the influence of alcohol and other drugs is a prominent safety concern in New Zealand and across the world. While alcohol testing is routinely performed for drivers involved in hospitalisation crashes, testing for other drugs is often not undertaken. The present study refers to 530 traffic crashes that occurred from October 2019 to January 2020 on New Zealand roads. The blood samples from 550 drivers who were injured in a crash and were admitted to a hospital (66% of all drivers involved in these crashes), previously tested for drugs and/or alcohol, were retested for a wider range of drugs. Alcohol above the applicable limit was found to be present in 38% of hospitalised drivers, while other drugs of interest were found in 47% of hospitalised drivers. Binary logistic regression was used to predict the presence of drugs of interest for a crashed driver using previous offence data. A driver having at least one prior drink and drug driving offence is 61% more likely to be positive for a drug of interest when involved in a crash. Similarly, a driver having at least one prior non-traffic drug offence is 4.7 times more likely to be positive for at least a drug of interest when involved in a crash. While the presence of a drug or drugs cannot be presumed to have played a role in the occurrence of the crash, this study has provided a unique and comprehensive picture of the presence of various drugs present in New Zealand drivers' blood. It is recommended to consider standardising drug testing on all blood specimens taken in relation to a serious injury or fatal crash. Crashes caused by problems with bus drivers' physical and mental health have increased in frequency in recent years. Insomnia, a common type of sleep problem, has significant positive relationships with both crash risk and mental health problems, especially anxiety and depression, which are themselves associated with driving behavior. However, few studies have conducted analysis on sleep-related problems and mental health exclusively on bus drivers, nor on how these problems influence driving performance. Thus, this study explored the effect of insomnia and mental health on bus drivers' risky driving behavior and evaluated the interaction of four variables: insomnia, anxiety, depression, and risky driving behavior. The survey-based investigation was conducted in a bus company in Suzhou, China, with 1,295 bus drivers participating. Insomnia, anxiety, and depression were self-reported based on professional mental health scales and risky driving behaviors were measured by the Driver Behavior Questionnaire. Two mediation models and a chain mediation model were developed to examine relationships among the bus drivers' insomnia, anxiety, depression, and risky driving behavior. Results revealed that (a) bus drivers less than 31 years old, drivers with more than 11 years' experience driving buses, and those with crash and violation involvement within three years demonstrated more severe degrees of insomnia, anxiety, depression, and risky driving behavior; (b) there were significant positive correlations and interactions among the four variables. Results specifically related to the interaction among variables include findings that (a) anxiety mediated between insomnia and risky driving behavior; (b) depression mediated between insomnia and risky driving behavior; and (c) anxiety affected bus drivers' risky driving behavior primarily though depression. By the year 2045, it is projected that Autonomous Vehicles (AVs) will make up half of the new vehicle market. Successful adoption of AVs can reduce drivers' stress and fatigue, curb traffic congestion, and improve safety, mobility, and economic efficiency. Due to the limited intelligence in relevant technologies, human-in-the-loop modalities are still necessary to ensure the safety of AVs at current or near future stages, because the vehicles may not be able to handle all emergencies. Therefore, it is important to know the takeover readiness of the drivers to ensure the takeover quality and avoid any potential accidents. To achieve this, a comprehensive understanding of the drivers' physiological states is crucial. However, there is a lack of systematic analysis of the correlation between different human physiological responses and takeover behaviors which could serve as important references for future studies to determine the types of data to use. This paper provides a comprehensive analysis of the effects of takeover behaviors on the common physiological indicators. A program for conditional automation was developed based on a game engine and applied to a driving simulator. The experiment incorporated three types of secondary tasks, three takeover events, and two traffic densities. Brain signals, Skin Conductance Level (SCL), and Heart Rate (HR) of the participants were collected while they were performing the driving simulations. The Frontal Asymmetry Index (FAI) (as an indicator of engagement) and Mental Workload (MWL) were calculated from the brain signals to indicate the mental states of the participants. The results revealed that the FAI of the drivers would slightly decrease after the takeover alerts were issued when they were doing secondary tasks prior to the takeover activities, and the higher difficulty of the secondary tasks could lead to lower overall FAI during the takeover periods. In contrast, The MWL and SCL increased during the takeover periods. The HR also increased rapidly at the beginning of the takeover period but dropped back to a normal level quickly. It was found that a fake takeover alert would lead to lower overall HR, slower increase, and lower peak of SCL during the takeover periods. Moreover, the higher traffic density scenarios were associated with higher MWL, and a more difficult secondary task would lead to higher MWL and HR during the takeover activities. A preliminary discussion of the correlation between the physiological data, takeover scenario, and vehicle data (that relevant to takeover readiness) was then conducted, revealing that although takeover event, SCL, and HR had slightly higher correlations with the maximum acceleration and reaction time, none of them dominated the takeover readiness. In addition, the analysis of the data across different participants was conducted, which emphasized the importance of considering standardization or normalization of the data when they were further used as input features for estimating takeover readiness. Overall, the results presented in this paper offer profound insights into the patterns of physiological data changes during takeover periods. Introduction: L3 automated vehicles can perform all dynamic driving tasks unless a take-over occurs due to operational limits. This issue is potentially important for young drivers who are vulnerable road users since they have skill deficits and easily evolve into aberrant driving. However, drivers lacking active involvement may be fatigued and drowsy. Previous research indicated that performing a voluntary non-driving-related task (NDRT) could keep drivers alert, but there was no difference in take-over performance with or without NDRT. Providing a monitoring request (MR) before a possible take-over request (TOR) exhibited better take-over performance in temporary automated driving. Therefore, the study aimed to investigate the effects of MR and voluntary NDRT on young drivers' fatigue and performance., Method: Twenty-five young drivers experienced 60 min automated driving on a highway with low traffic density and a TOR prompted due to a collision event. A within-subjects was designed that comprised three conditions: NONE, TOR-only, and MR + TOR. Drivers were allowed to perform a self-paced phone NDRT during automated driving., Results: The PERCLOS and blink frequency data showed that playing phones could keep drivers vigilant. The take-over performance on whether taking phone had no difference, but with MRs condition exhibited better take-over performance including the shorter reaction time and the longer TTC. Subjective evaluations also showed the advantages of MRs with more safety, trust, acceptance, and lower workload., Conclusions: Taking MRs had a positive effect on relieving fatigue and improving take-over performance. This study aims to understand the dynamic changes in driving risks in highway tunnel groups. Real-world driving experiments were conducted, collecting pupil area data to measure pupil size oscillations using the Percentage of Pupil Area Variable (PPAV) metric. The analysis focused on investigating relative pupil size fluctuations to explore trends in driving risk fluctuations within tunnel groups. The objective was to identify accident-prone areas and key factors influencing driving risks, providing insights for safety improvements. The findings revealed an overall "whipping effect" phenomenon in driving risk changes within tunnel groups. Differences were observed between interior tunnel areas and open sections, including adjacent, approach, and departure zones. Higher driving risks were associated with locations closer to the tail end of the tunnel group and shorter exit departure sections. Targeted safety improvement designs should consider fluctuation patterns in different directions, with attention to tunnels at the tail end. In open sections, increased travel distance and lengths of upstream and downstream tunnels raised driving risks, while longer open zones improved driving risks. Driving direction and sequence had minimal impact on risks. By integrating driver vision, tunnel characteristics, and the environment, this study identified high-risk areas and critical factors, providing guidance for monitoring and improving driving risks in tunnel groups. Regular speeders are those who commit speeding recidivism during a period. Among their speeding behaviors, some occurring in specific scenarios may cause more hazards to road users. Therefore, there is a need to evaluate the driving risks if the regular speeders have different speeding propensities. This study considers speeding-related hard-braking events (SHEs) as a safety surrogate measure and recognizes the regular speeders who encounter at least one SHEs during the study period as risky individuals. To identify speeding behaviors and hard-braking events from low-frequency GPS trajectories, we compare the average travel speed between pairwise adjacent GPS points to the posted speed limit and examine the speed curve and the corresponding travel distance between these GPS points, respectively. Thereafter, a logistic model, XGBoost, and three 1D Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) including AlexNet CNN, Mini-AlexNet CNN, and Simple CNN are respectively developed to recognize the regular speeders who encountered SHEs based on their speeding propensities. The proposed Mini-AlexNet CNN achieves a global F1-score of 91% and recall of 90% on the testing data, which are superior to other models. Further, the study uses the Shapley Additive exPlanation (SHAP) framework to visually interpret the contribution of speeding propensities on SHE likelihood. It is found that speeding by 50% or greater for no more than 285 m is the most dangerous kind among all the speeding behaviors. Speeding on roads without bicycle lanes or on roads with roadside parking and excessive accesses increases the probability of encountering SHEs. Traffic law enforcement is a road safety measure whose effects on accidents or injuries is best described by means of a function rather than a point estimate. An informative function should comprise both increases and decreases in enforcement. Currently available accident modification functions cannot serve this need. A fruitful approach to developing accident modification functions covering both increases and decreases in enforcement is differences-in-differences estimates based on multivariate accident prediction models. Introduction: Little is known about regular users' perceptions of partial (Level 2) automation or how those perceptions affect behind-the-wheel behavior., Method: A mixed mode (phone and online) survey explored the habits, expectations, and attitudes among regular users of General Motors Super Cruise (n = 200), Nissan/Infiniti ProPILOT Assist (n = 202), and Tesla Autopilot (n = 202)., Results: All three groups reported being more likely to engage in non-driving-related activities while using their systems than while driving unassisted. Super Cruise and Autopilot users especially were more likely to report engaging in activities that involved taking their hands off the wheel or their eyes off the road. Many Super Cruise and Autopilot users also said they could perform secondary (non-driving-related) tasks better and more often while using their systems, while fewer ProPILOT Assist users shared this opinion. Super Cruise users were most likely and ProPILOT Assist users least likely to think that secondary activities were safer to perform while using their systems. While some drivers said they found user safeguards (e.g., attention reminders, lockouts) annoying and tried to circumvent them, most people said they found them helpful and felt safer with them. Large percentages of users (53% Super Cruise, 42% Autopilot and 12% ProPILOT Assist) indicated they were comfortable treating their systems as self-driving., Conclusions: Some regular users have a poor understanding of their technology's limits. China currently faces significant environmental risks stemming from contaminated sites. The driving mechanism of site contamination, influenced by various drivers, remain obscured due to a dearth of quantitative methodologies and comprehensive data. Here, we used a data-driven causality inference approach to construct an interpretable random forest (RF) model. Results show that: (1) the trained RF model demonstrated remarkable predictive accuracy for identifying contaminated sites, with an accuracy rate of 0.89. In contrast to conventional correlation analysis, the RF model excels in discerning the key drivers through non-linear and genuine causal relationships between these drivers and site contamination. (2) Among the 25 potential drivers, we identified 18 key drivers of site contamination. These drivers encompass a broad spectrum of factors, including production and operational data, pollutant control level, site protection capability, pollutant characteristics, and physical-geographical conditions. (3) Each key driver exerts varying impacts on site pollution, with diverse directions, intensities, and underlying patterns. The partial dependence plots (PDPs) illuminate the role of each key driver, its critical value contributing to site pollution, and the interplay between these drivers. The key drivers facilitate the realization of three primary contamination processes: uncontrolled release, effective migration, and persistent accumulation. In light of our findings, environmental managers can proactively prevent site contamination by regulating single, dual, and multiple key drivers to disrupt critical pollution processes. Safety is a critical concern for autonomous vehicles (AVs). Current testing approaches face challenges in simultaneously meeting the requirements of being valid, safe, and fast. To address these challenges, the silent testing approach that tests functions or systems in the background without interfering with driving is motivated. Building upon our previous research, this study first extends the method to specifically address the validation of AV perception, utilizing a lane marking detection algorithm (LMDA) as a case study. Second, field experiments were conducted to investigate the method's effectiveness in validating AV systems. For both studies, an architecture for describing the working principle is presented. The efficacy of the method in evaluating the LMDA is demonstrated through the use of adversarial images generated from a dataset. Furthermore, various scenarios involving pedestrians crossing a road under different levels of criticality were constructed to gain practical insights into the method's applicability for AV system validation. The results show that corner cases of the LMDA are successfully identified by the given evaluation metrics. Furthermore, the experiments highlight the benefits of employing multiple virtual instances with different initial states, enabling the expansion of the test space and the discovery of unknown unsafe scenarios, particularly those prone to false-positive objects. On freeways, sudden deceleration or lane-changing by vehicles can trigger conflict risk that propagates backward in a specific pattern. Simulating this pattern of conflict risk propagation can not only help prevent crashes but is also vital for the deployment of advanced vehicle technologies. However, conflict risk propagation simulation (CRPS) on freeways is challenging due to the nuanced nature of the pattern, intricate spatio-temporal interdependencies among sequences and the high-resolution requirements. In this work, we introduce a conflict risk index to delineate potential conflict risk by aggregating various surrogate safety measures (SSMs) over time and space, and then propose a Spatio-Temporal Transformer Network (STTN) to simulate its propagation patterns. Multi-head attention mechanism and stacking layers enable the transformer to learn dynamic and hierarchical features in conflict risk sequences globally and locally. Two components, spatial and temporal learning transformers, are innovatively incorporated to extract and fuse these features, culminating in a fine-grained conflict risk inference. Comprehensive tests in real-world datasets verified the effectiveness of the STTN. Specifically, we employ three widely-recognized SSMs: Modified Time-To-Collision (MTTC), Proportion of Stopping Distance (PSD), and Deceleration Rate to Avoid a Collision (DRAC). These SSMs, gleaned from vehicle trajectories, are employed to delineate the conflict risk. Then, we conduct three comparative simulation tasks: MTTC-based model, PSD-based model, and DRAC-based model. Experimental results show that the PSD-based model exhibits a robust performance on all tasks, and is minimally affected by the durations of the simulation time, while the DRAC-based model more distinctly delineates the spatio-temporal conflict risk heterogeneity. Furthermore, we benchmark the STTN against three common state-of-the-art machine learning models across all simulation tasks. Results reveal that the STTN consistently surpassed these benchmark models (LSTM, CNN and ConvLSTM), suggesting the potential of the attention mechanism on the CRPS tasks. Close passes by motor vehicles endanger both the safety and comfort of bicycle riders. Governments in many countries have introduced laws requiring drivers to maintain at least a minimum distance between their vehicle and the cyclist they are passing, despite relatively poor understanding of the causes of bicycle overtaking crashes at the time. Queensland was the first state in Australia to introduce such a law, with a two-year trial commencing in April 2014. The data collected during the evaluation of the trial were later analysed to answer two main questions: "Under what circumstances do close passes occur?" and "Why do drivers pass too close?". The first question was largely approached by analysing the video observations of more than 18,000 riders (including 2,000 passing events) at 15 locations on Queensland roads and examining the infrastructure, traffic and road user characteristics that influenced passing distances. The second question was addressed in experimental studies which used the video observations as stimuli. This paper demonstrates how the political need for evaluation of a countermeasure can act as a stimulus for research funding that then allows data collection, analysis and better understanding of crash causation. Logically, introduction of a countermeasure should be based on a rigorous understanding of crash causation. Road safety is an important public health issue; technology, policy, and educational interventions to prevent crashes are of significant interest to researchers and policymakers. In particular, there is significant ongoing research to proactively evaluate the safety of new technologies, including autonomous vehicles, before enough crashes occur to directly measure their impact. We analyze the distributional form of five diverse datasets that approximate motor vehicle safety incident severity, including one dataset of hard braking events that characterizes the severity of non-crash incidents. Our empirical analysis finds that all five datasets closely fit a lognormal distribution (Kolmogorov-Smirnov distance < 0.013; significance of loglikelihood ratio with other distributions < 0.000029). We demonstrate a linkage between two well-known but largely qualitative safety frameworks and the severity distributions observed in the data. We create a formal model of the Swiss Cheese Model (SCM) and show through analysis and simulations that this formalization leads to a lognormal distribution of the severity continuum of safety-critical incidents. This finding is not only consistent with the empirical data we examine, but represents a quantitative restatement of Heinrich's Triangle, another heretofore largely qualitative framework that hypothesizes that safety events of increasing severity have decreasing frequency. Our results support the use of more frequent, low-severity events to rapidly assess safety in the absence of less frequent, high-severity events for any system consistent with our formalization of SCM. Introduction: During the COVID-19 pandemic, public transport (e.g., bus and taxi) drivers encountered great stress because they needed to work to maintain the operation of the transportation system. This study proposes and empirically investigates the impacts of job stressors and economic stressors of public transport drivers on emotional exhaustion, and subsequent psychological well-being and performance under the health risk of COVID-19. The moderating effects of perceived threat and death anxiety on the relationships between stressors and emotional exhaustion are also examined., Method and Results: Using two survey samples collected from bus and taxi drivers in Taiwan, the results reveal that, except for the effect of time pressure on taxi drivers' exhaustion, job stressors (job overload and time pressure) and economic stressors (job insecurity) positively relate to emotional exhaustion for both bus and taxi drivers. Drivers' emotional exhaustion has negative effects on both job satisfaction and positive effects on risky driving behaviors. The platooning technology allows for two or more trucks running in convoy at a pre-defined distance between each other, being virtually connected using connectivity technology and automated driving support systems. It is recognized that truck platooning systems bring economical and environmental advantages. Thus, it is time for a transition from the existing truck freight activity towards truck platooning systems. This requires an important improvement in terms of in-vehicle technology, together with infrastructure improvement and truck drivers' acquisition of new technology-related skills. A holistic approach is previewed to identify both the requirements for the development of truck platooning services and the requests for their safe deployment in the real world. Then, qualitative data were collected from truck drivers working for two different Portuguese freight companies using Focus Groups (FG). Thus, three FG sessions were organized and carried out with a total of 22 truck drivers. Considering that age and experience on the job are important factors to take into consideration for technological changes on the job, their potential impact on truck drivers' activity was addressed on the focus group discussions. Anyway, the potential users' attitudes regarding any innovation on the job were addressed as a prevention of further negative attitudes or misuse. This study evaluates the impact of reducing the default speed limit from 50 km/h to 40 km/h on traffic safety and drivers' behavior in Edmonton, Canada. The research comprehensively examines collision and speed data to assess the outcomes of the new speed limit. Collision data was analyzed across three distinct periods: pre-COVID (2017-2019), the COVID period (2019-2021), and the after-implementation period (August 2021 to July 2022). Speed surveys were conducted on 219 road segments before and after the implementation of the speed limit change. The study utilized a before-and-after with a comparison group approach to evaluate the impact on collisions, using 50 km/h roads that maintained their speed limit throughout as the comparison group. The impact of the reduced speed limit on road safety was assessed by analyzing collision data for two periods, pre-COVID (2017-2019) and COVID (2019-2021), compared to the period after setting the new speed limit (2021-2022). Two-sample t-tests were employed to examine the change in speeds. The analysis revealed statistically significant reductions in the overall number of collisions and injuries and fatalities resulting from collisions, by 25% and 31%, respectively. The study also categorized neighborhoods and roads to demonstrate the areas that experienced the greatest benefits. Speed data showed statistically significant reductions in the average and 85th percentile speeds, with drivers lowering their speeds at 115 locations, accounting for 53% of the surveyed locations. Moreover, higher speed reductions were observed on local roads compared to collector roads, and narrower roads compared to wider roads.. Overall, the study demonstrates that reducing the speed limit can lead to lower speeds and fewer collisions on the roads, creating a safer road environment for drivers, pedestrians, and cyclists. Although traffic police enforcement is widely recognized as a key action in the road safety field, it can be a costly policy to implement. In addition, governments often impose budget constraints that can limit the resources available for activities such as law enforcement and surveillance. To evaluate the impact of human traffic control resources planning on traffic fatalities on Spanish NUTS-3 regions interurban roads, this paper uses an econometric model to investigate the performance of police enforcement intensity by focusing on two crucial traffic law infractions (i.e., speeding and drunk driving). After controlling for a range of economic, demographic, climate, and risk exposure variables, results highlight the relevance of visible, human, and in-person traffic law enforcement through regular vehicle patrols for reducing traffic crashes, with a non-significant effect of automatic enforcement. Introduction: This research examines the effectiveness of point-to-point speed cameras in Thailand compared with spot speed camera enforcement, which is widely used in the country., Method: The evaluation includes the speed control's efficiency by observing the 85th percentile average speed of drivers on the road; the speed detection rate; conducting a comparison with spot speed camera enforcement; and a cost effectiveness analysis of this measure., Results: After speed detection using point-to-point cameras were employed during which warning tickets were issued in many days of experiment, the 85th percentile average speed in the controlled area decreased by 10 km/hr, with a maximum decrease of 20 km/hr. When comparing the detection rate of the two camera models, point-to-point cameras could detect 95% of drivers' driving speed, with 45% of the detected drivers identified as speeding drivers, while spot speed cameras were only able to detect 10% to 20% of speeders. In recent times, the assessment of unsignalized intersection safety has received significant research attention because of the complex and diverse traffic movements and driving behaviour at such locations. Objective: It is unclear to what extent individuals who use cannabis can accurately assess their ability to drive safely following cannabis use, and lack of understanding as to what factors influence changes in driving performance following cannabis use. This research explores whether self-reported readiness to drive (RTD) and previous experience (PE) using cannabis within 2 h of driving can predict observed changes in driving performance following acute cannabis use., Methods: Individuals who used cannabis at least monthly completed a baseline simulated drive, were dosed with cannabis of approximately 6.18% THC, then drove at approximately 30-minutes, 90-minutes, and 180-minutes post-dose. Before each drive, participants were asked if they felt safe to drive (on real roadways, not the simulator), a yes/no question (RTD-yes/RTD-no). Venous blood was drawn at baseline and approximately 15-minutes post-dose. Cannabis use history was obtained and included whether the participant had ever driven within 2 h of use (PE-yes/PE-no) and how many days out of the past 30 they had done so (NPD). Drives were segmented into events delineated by changes in the driving environment. Within events, standard deviation of lateral position (SDLP), average speed, and number of lane departures were calculated, and differences from baseline were modeled using mixed-effects regression. Models considered covariates of time, event, and speed, and used RTD-yes/RTD-no, PE-yes/PE-no, NPD, and their interactions as potential predictors. Conditional R 2 was used to compare the predictive ability of RTD versus change in Delta-9-THC., Data Sources: Data were collected from 30 individuals who use cannabis and included cannabis use patterns, driving behaviors after use, self-reported RTD, measures of driving performance, and cannabinoid blood levels., Results: RTD-no predicted a 2.60 cm increase in SDLP relative to baseline (95 % CI: 0.43, 4.73, p = 0.018). Average speeds generally decreased relative to baseline, except for RTD-yes with PE-yes (+1.08 mph, 95 % CI: 0.05, 2.11). NPD predicted increased speed among RTD-yes (+0.11 mph per additional day, 95 % CI: 0.01, 0.22) and decreased speed among RTD-no (-0.06 mph per additional day, 95 % CI: -0.18, 0.32). The difference in these effects was statistically significant (p = 0.038). RTD, PE, and NPD were not significant predictors of changes in number of lane departures. For all outcomes, models using RTD achieved higher conditional R 2 than models that replaced this variable with change in Delta-9-THC. Differences were most prominent when modeling change in speed with NPD (R 2 =0.544 with RTD vs. R 2 =0.481 with change in Delta-9-THC)., Significance of Results: These results suggest individuals who use cannabis can somewhat self-identify when they are likely to exhibit greater degraded lateral control, although RTD does not fully explain observed degradation in performance. Past research suggests drivers may reduce speed to compensate for recognized impairment following acute cannabis use. Our findings suggest this to be true for those who reported never having previously driven within 2 h of cannabis use or reported RTD-no, but not for those who had previously driven within 2 h of cannabis use and reported RTD-yes. Cooperative, Connected and Automated Mobility (CCAM) enabled by Connected and Autonomous Vehicles (CAVs) has potential to change future transport systems. The findings from previous studies suggest that these technologies will improve traffic flow, reduce travel time and delays. Furthermore, these CAVs will be safer compared to existing vehicles. As these vehicles may have the ability to travel at a higher speed and with shorter headways, it has been argued that infrastructure-based measures are required to optimise traffic flow and road user comfort. One of these measures is the use of a dedicated lane for CAVs on urban highways and arterials and constitutes the focus of this research. As the potential impact on safety is unclear, the present study aims to evaluate the safety impacts of dedicated lanes for CAVs. A calibrated and validated microsimulation model developed in AIMSUN was used to simulate and produce safety results. These results were analysed with the help of the Surrogate Safety Assessment Model (SSAM). The model includes human-driven vehicles (HDVs), 1st generation and 2nd generation autonomous vehicles (AVs) with different sets of parameters leading to different movement behaviour. The model uses a variety of cases in which a dedicated lane is provided at different type of lanes (inner and outer) of highways to understand the safety effects. The model also tries to understand the minimum required market penetration rate (MPR) of CAVs for a better movement of traffic on dedicated lanes. It was observed in the models that although at low penetration rates of CAVs (around 20%) dedicated lanes might not be advantageous, a reduction of 53% to 58% in traffic conflicts is achieved with the introduction of dedicated lanes in high CAV MPRs. In addition, traffic crashes estimated from traffic conflicts are reduced up to 48% with the CAVs. The simulation results revealed that with dedicated lane, the combination of 40-40-20 (i.e., 40% human-driven - 40% 1st generation AVs- 20% 2nd generation AVs) could be the optimum MPR for CAVs to achieve the best safety benefits. Intersections are high-risk locations for autonomous vehicles (AVs). Crash causation analysis based on pre-crash scenarios can provide new insight into these crashes that can lead to effective countermeasures, but there are significant differences in pre-crash scenarios between autonomous and conventional vehicles, and inadequate AV data has put limits on research. The association rule method, however, can yield useful results despite these limits. This study therefore aims to use the method with pre-crash scenarios to understand the characteristics and contributing factors of AV crashes at intersections from the latest 5-year AV crash data. Analysis of 197 AV crashes at intersections revealed 30 types of pre-crash scenarios. The rear-end crash (58.88%) and lane change crash (16.24%) were the most frequently occurring scenarios for AVs. The proportion of AVs being rear-ended by conventional vehicles was 58.38%. The main contributing factors of these two most common AV scenarios were identified by association rules and crash causes were analyzed from the perspective of AV decision-making. The main factors contributing to the AV rear-end scenario were location outside the intersection in the intersection-related area, traffic signal control, autonomous engaged mode, mixed-use or public land, and weekdays, while those for lane change scenarios were on-street parking and the time of 8:00 a.m. Important causes of rear-end crashes attributable to the AV were inadequate stop and deceleration decisions by the AV's automated driving system (ADS) and insufficient collision avoidance decisions in lane change crashes. Identification of the pre-crash characteristics and contributing factors provide new insight into AV crash causation and can be used in the determination of the AV's operational design domain and the development and optimization of the AV's ADS at intersections. Introduction: Effective November 2016, the default speed limit in Seattle was lowered from 25 to 20 mph on nonarterial streets and from 30 to 25 mph on arterial streets, unless otherwise posted. In the downtown area, signs indicating the new speed limit were installed on arterials when the lower default limit took effect. Outside the downtown, new speed limit signs were installed on some arterials starting in 2018. The study evaluated effects of the speed limit reduction on crash severity in Seattle., Method: Police-reported crashes in Seattle and three control cities in Washington before and after the speed limit change were examined. Logistic regression analyses evaluated effects of the speed limit reduction on odds that a crash involved a fatal (K), disabling (A), or evident (B) injury inside and outside Seattle's downtown. Separate analyses were performed for all crashes (except those occurring on interstates and freeways), for crashes on arterials, and for crashes on nonarterial roads., Results: The speed limit reduction was associated with a significant 17.2% reduction in odds of a crash involving KAB injury among all crashes and a 19.9% reduction for crashes on arterials in downtown Seattle. As autonomous driving technology continues to advance and gradually become a reality, ensuring the safety of autonomous driving in complex traffic scenarios has become a key focus and challenge in current research. Model-free deep reinforcement learning (Deep Reinforcement Learning) methods have been widely used for addressing motion planning problems in complex traffic scenarios, as they can implicitly learn interactions between vehicles. However, current planning methods based on deep reinforcement learning exhibit limited robustness and generalization performance. They struggle to adapt to traffic conditions beyond the training scenarios and face difficulties in handling uncertainties arising from unexpected situations. Therefore, this paper addresses the challenges presented by complex traffic scenarios, such as signal-free intersections. It does so by first utilizing the historical trajectories of adjacent vehicles observed in these scenarios. Through a Variational Auto-Encoder (VAE) based on the Gated Recurrent Unit (GRU) recurrent neural network, it extracts driver style features. These driver style features are then integrated with other state parameters and used to train a motion planning strategy within an extended reinforcement learning framework. This approach ultimately yields a more robust and interpretable mid-to-mid motion planning method. Objective: Road familiarity is an important factor affecting drivers' visual features. Analyzing the quantitative correlation between drivers' road familiarity and visual features in complex environment is of great help to improve driving safety. However, there are few relevant studies. This paper takes urban plane intersection as the environmental object to explore the correlation between drivers' glance behavior and road familiarity, and conducts research on the quantitative evaluation model of road familiarity based on this correlation., Method: First, a real vehicle experiment was carried out to record the eye movement data of 24 drivers with different road familiarity. The driver's visual field plane was divided into 10 areas of interest (AOIs) based on the driver's perspective. Three measures, including average glance duration, number of glances, and fixation transition probabilities between AOIs at urban plane intersections, were extracted. Finally, based on the experimental results, the driver road familiarity evaluation model was constructed using the factor analysis method., Results: There are significant differences between unfamiliar and familiar drivers regarding the average glance duration toward the forward (FW) area, the left window (LW) area, the left rearview mirror (LVM) area and the left forward (LF) area, the number of glances toward the other (OT) area, and the fixation transition probabilities of LW→RF (right forward), LF→LF, LF→FW, FW→LW, FW→FW, FW→RVM (right rearview mirror). The comprehensive evaluation results show that the accuracy rate of the driver road familiarity evaluation model reached 83%., Conclusions: This paper revealed that there is a strong correlation between drivers' road familiarity and drivers' glance behavior. Based on this correlation, we can include road familiarity as a part of drivers' working status and establish a high accuracy evaluation model of driver road familiarity. The conclusion of this paper can provide some reference for the humanized design and improvement of advanced driving assistance system, which is of great significance for reducing the driving workload of drivers and improving the driving safety.

Objective: Roadwork zones represent a hazardous place within the highway system, with higher crash rates and injury severity, often due to excessive speed and noncompliance with speed limits. On freeways, a common layout is to close a full roadway and to divert traffic onto the opposite roadway, with one lane closed to accommodate the redirected traffic, by driving through the median strip. In this scenario, the second chicane can be a hazardous point if it is not correctly signaled. This paper examines the need to install a speed monitoring display (SMD) before the returning chicane on a bypass., Methods: A two-phase study was conducted on a Spanish freeway where a roadway was temporarily closed. Two measurement points were established on the bypass, one in the middle and one at the end, prior to the return chicane through the median strip. During Phase 1, the portable SMD was installed and during Phase 2, it was removed. The average and the 85 th percentile of the speed distribution at each point during both phases were compared. Additionally, mean difference tests were conducted and a speed prediction model was developed., Results: With the SMD, drivers reduced their speed from the midpoint to the returning chicane, within the range of 7-10 km/h. Conversely, upon removal of the SMD, motorists increased their speed while driving through the bypass, resulting in excessive speed at the most hazardous point, the chicane leading back to the original roadway. The difference in mean speed between the two phases was 18 km/h at the returning chicane., Conclusions: In addition to the traffic calming measures implemented prior to entering roadwork zones on freeways, which are conveniently established in the standards; it is necessary to evaluate potentially dangerous areas of the layout and implement additional measures where required. Specifically, in the case of final chicanes of bypasses with reduced radii, it is recommended that a speed monitoring display be installed as a mandatory element in order to inform drivers of this challenging segment. Due to complex traffic conditions, transition areas in highway work zones are associated with a higher crash risk than other highway areas. Understanding risk-contributing features in transition areas is essential for ensuring traffic safety on highways. However, conventional surrogate safety measures (SSMs) are quite limited in identifying the crash risk in transition areas due to the complex traffic environment. To this end, this study proposes an improved safety potential field, named the Work-Zone Crash Risk Field (WCRF). The WCRF force can be used to measure the crash risk of individual vehicles that enter a work zone considering the influence of multiple features, upon which the overall crash risk of the road segment in a specific time window can be estimated. With the overall crash risk used as a label, the time-window-based traffic data are used to train and validate an eXtreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost) classifier, and the Shapley Additive Explanations (SHAP) method is integrated with the XGBoost classifier to identify the key risk-contributing traffic features. To assess the proposed approach, a case study is conducted using real-time vehicle trajectory data collected in two work zones along a highway in China. The results demonstrate that the WCRF-based SSM outperforms conventional SSMs in identifying crash risks in work zone transition areas on highways. In addition, we perform lane-based analysis regarding the impact of setting up work zones on highway safety and investigate the heterogeneity in risk-contributing features across different work zones. Several interesting findings from the analysis are reported in this paper. Compared to existing SSMs, the WCRF-based SSM offers a more practical and comprehensive way to describe the crash risk in work zones. While many methods have been proposed to detect driver stress with high accuracy, few studies have explored how to mitigate stress during driving effectively. This study proposed and evaluated two driver stress intervention methods, i.e., auditory Positive Comments w/o haptic Breathing guidance (BPC and PC). Sixty drivers were randomly assigned to four groups (i.e., no stress, stressful but no intervention-NI, PC, and BPC) and completed a simulated driving task with their physiological, psychological, and behavioral data collected. Driver stress was effectively induced by challenging simulated driving events. Haptic guidance provided by smartwatches efficiently regulated the breathing rate to the target. Engaging in the intervention was associated with increased RMSSD and did not worsen driving performance. Participants perceived moderate to large comfort effects. The complexity of driving scenarios should be considered for choosing interventions. Breathing intervention was less effective when complex maneuvers were required than normal driving. During rapid urbanization and increase in motorization, it becomes particularly important to understand the relationships between traffic safety and risk factors in order to provide targeted improvements and policy recommendations. Violations and police enforcement are key variables, but the endogenous relationship between crashes and violations has made these variables unreliable and has limited their use. To manage this problem, this study developed a systematic approach for the joint modeling of crashes and violations to identify crash and violation hotspots and examine the mechanisms underlying macro-level contributing factors. Socio-economic, road network, public facility, traffic enforcement, and land use intensity data from 115 towns in Suzhou, China, were collected as independent variables. A bivariate negative binomial spatial conditional autoregressive model (BNB-CAR) and the potential for safety improvement (PSI) method were adopted to identify crash-prone and violation-prone areas, and an interpretable machine learning framework was applied to explore the factors' effects by area. Results showed that the proposed framework was able to accurately identify problem areas and quantify the impact of key factors, which, in Suzhou, were the number of traffic police and their daily patrol time. Considering such enforcement-related information provided important insights into reducing crash and violation frequency; for example, keeping the number of traffic police and daily patrol time under certain thresholds (number of police lower than 11 and patrol time lower than 2.3 h in this sample) was as effective as increasing these numbers for reducing the probability of high-crash and high-violation areas. Vision Zero involves the use of a systems approach to eliminate fatal and serious injuries from motor vehicle crashes by accommodating basic human limitations that lead to crashes through fundamental behavioral expectations, together with sound vehicle and road design. Alcohol-related crashes account for a significant proportion of motor vehicle crash death and injury and can be addressed in a safe road transport system. We look at near-term policy and program interventions that are known to motivate drivers to make safe drinking and driving decisions, and possibilities for using technology over the longer term to address risks resulting from driver impairment that is either inadvertent or willful high-risk behavior. From the Vision Zero perspective,"normal driving" refers to a situation where traffic and road users are operating as desired and planned. A driver in this normal driving envelope operates at a safe speed, wears a seat belt, focuses on the driving task, and is not impaired. A safe system accommodates human errors, mistakes, and misjudgments in the normal driving envelope. However, it may not be capable of compensating for deliberate violations and rule-breaking. A critical role of behavioral programs and policies is to motivate safe decisions by drivers and other road users and keep them in the normal driving envelope where they can be protected from unintentional errors by a safe system. While much progress has been made in developing and implementing impaired driving policies and programs, much potential remains in the their ability to motivate drivers to meet the fundamental expectations required in a safe system. Examples of behavioral programs and policies that have strong evidence of effectiveness but are underutilized in the U.S. include conducting periodic sobriety checkpoints, lowering the blood alcohol concentration limit for driving, and mandating the use of ignition interlock devices. While the specific interventions may differ, it is likely that the same situation of incomplete implementation of behavioral programs and policies - and consequent unrealized value to a comprehensive safe system - applies to many other nations. To reach the goal of zero deaths, a comprehensive Vision Zero program needs to address the problem of deliberate risk-taking, which can include driver impairment from alcohol or other causes and extend to dangerous and reckless driving. Advanced safety technologies offer a range of opportunities for this purpose. Cars available today and in the future will have a plethora of sensors that monitor circumstances inside and around the car. These systems can identify whether a driver is in their safe driving envelope and respond with interventions that are appropriate for the severity and nature of the risk. Interventions could range from those that are not perceivable to the driver, such as putting driver assist systems into active mode, to stronger steps such as limiting or preventing vehicle operation. Although driving risk taking appears to be mainly male, an increase in driving violations has been observed in recent years among French female drivers. The main objective of the present study was to explore the driving behaviors, psychological resources, and vulnerabilities of female and male driving offenders participating in a French driver rehabilitation program. The second aim was to examine to what extent females' and males' resources and vulnerabilities predicted their violations, engagement in distracting activities while driving, and prosocial driving behaviors. In the course of 110 rehabilitation programs, 1686 driving offenders (22.4% females) completed a paper-and-pencil questionnaire. Compared to male offenders, females were more likely to have received a higher education, be divorced, or separated, and drive fewer annual kilometers. They also had had fewer demerit points than males in the last three years. They were more empathetic but also more impulsive than their male counterparts and less self-compassionate and mindful. Regression and moderation analyses revealed that, across genders, certain psychological resources such as mindfulness can be considered as protective factors for driving offenders as they tend to decrease dangerous behaviors and increase prosocial ones, while vulnerabilities such as aggressive driving anger expression seem to have the opposite effect. Our results provide a better understanding of driving offenders' behavior and the influence of personal dispositions. Objectives: This paper aims to address the challenge of low accuracy in single-modal driver anger recognition by introducing a multimodal driver anger recognition model. The primary objective is to develop a multimodal fusion recognition method for identifying driver anger, focusing on electrocardiographic (ECG) signals and driving behavior signals., Methods: Emotion-inducing experiments were performed employing a driving simulator to capture both ECG signals and driving behavioral signals from drivers experiencing both angry and calm moods. An analysis of characteristic relationships and feature extraction was conducted on ECG signals and driving behavior signals related to driving anger. Seventeen effective feature indicators for recognizing driving anger were chosen to construct a dataset for driver anger. A binary classification model for recognizing driving anger was developed utilizing the Support Vector Machine (SVM) algorithm., Results: Multimodal fusion demonstrated significant advantages over single-modal approaches in emotion recognition. The SVM-DS model using decision-level fusion had the highest accuracy of 84.75%. Compared with the driver anger emotion recognition model based on unimodal ECG features, unimodal driving behavior features, and multimodal feature layer fusion, the accuracy increased by 9.10%, 4.15%, and 0.8%, respectively., Conclusions: The proposed multimodal recognition model, incorporating ECG and driving behavior signals, effectively identifies driving anger. Many fatal motorcycle accidents occur because car drivers infringe on motorcycle riders' right-of-way. The size-arrival effect refers to observers' tendency to judge larger objects as arriving sooner than smaller objects when estimating an approaching object's arrival time, which is one cause of right-of-way motorcycle accidents. Previous research has focused on a single vehicle that approaches the driver. However, it is also possible that a motorcycle approaches a driver along with other vehicles driving on multiple-lane roads. This paper presents the results of two online experiments; Experiment 1 validated the size-arrival effect when either a car or a motorcycle approached a driver waiting to turn across an intersection; and Experiment 2 investigated the size-arrival effect when a motorcycle and a parallelly driven car simultaneously approached the driver. Participants (n = 1723) in Experiment 1 and (n = 986) in Experiment 2 took part in the study. The results (1) validated the size-arrival effect; drivers accepted a smaller gap for approaching motorcycles than cars; (2) in the present settings drivers made turn decisions based on the distance gap rather than the time-to-arrival gap; (3) driver's acceptance of the gap when facing a motorcycle and a car was comparable to when facing only the car and significantly larger than facing only a motorcycle. These findings indicate that a car driving parallelly or behind a motorcycle reduces the size-arrival effect. These findings provide implications to suggest a safe riding strategy for motorcycle riders. Objective: Driver characteristics have been linked to the frequency and severity of car crashes. Among these, age and gender have been shown to impact both the possibility and severity of a crash. Previous studies have used standard ordered probit (OP) models to analyze crash data, and some research has suggested heteroskedastic ordered probit (HETOP) could provide improved model fit. The objective of this paper is to evaluate potential improvements of the heteroskedastic ordered probit (HETOP) model compared to the standard ordered probit (OP) model in crash analysis, by examining the effect of gender across age on injury severity among drivers. This paper hypothesizes that the HETOP model can provide a better fit to crash data, by allowing heteroskedasticity in the distribution of injury severity across driver age and gender., Methods: Data for 20,222 crashes were analyzed for North Carolina from 2016 to 2018, which represents the state with the highest number of fatalities per 100 million vehicle miles traveled amongst available crash data from the Highway Safety Information System., Results: Darker lighting conditions, severe road surface conditions, and less severe weather were associated with increased injury severity. For driver demographics, the probability of severe injuries increased with age and for male drivers. Moreover, the variance of severity increased with age disproportionately within and across genders, and the HETOP was able to account for this., Conclusions: The results of the two applied approaches revealed that HETOP model outperformed the standard OP model when measuring the effects of age and gender together in injury severity analysis, due to the heteroskedasticity in injury severity within gender and age. The HETOP statistical method presented in this paper can be more broadly applied across other contexts and combinations of independent variables for improved model prediction and accuracy of causal variables in traffic safety.

Onboard virtual assistants with the ability to converse with users are gaining favour in supporting effective human-machine interaction to meet safe standards of operation in automated vehicles (AVs). Previous studies have highlighted the need to communicate situation information to effectively support the transfer of control and responsibility of the driving task. This study explores 'interaction types' used for this complex human-machine transaction, by analysing how situation information is conveyed and reciprocated during a transfer of control scenario. Two human drivers alternated control in a bespoke, dual controlled driving simulator with the transfer of control being entirely reliant on verbal communication. Handover dialogues were coded based on speech-act classifications, and a cluster analysis was conducted. Four interaction types were identified for both virtual assistants (i.e., agent handing over control) - Supervisor, Information Desk, Interrogator and Converser, and drivers (i.e., agent taking control) - Coordinator, Perceiver, Inquirer and Silent Receiver. Each interaction type provides a framework of characteristics that can be used to define driver requirements and implemented in the design of future virtual assistants to support the driver in maintaining and rebuilding timely situation awareness, whilst ensuring a positive user experience. Objective: The purpose of this paper is to explore the changing laws of driving safety in the complex and changing driving environment in urban tunnels, to analyze the evolution of driving risk fields caused by changes in adjacent vehicles, driving behavior characteristics and road environment, and to reveal the formation mechanism of tunnel driving danger zones., Methods: The kinetic field, behavioral field and potential field models are constructed according to the APF theory. The driving safety risks arising from the surrounding vehicles, driving behavior characteristics and changes in the tunnel environment are analyzed in the process of driving from the open section to the exit of the tunnel., Results: The magnitude of the risk field force is inversely proportional to the spacing of the vehicles and the distance between the tunnel sidewalls, and is proportional to the relative speed between the vehicles and the slope of the longitudinal slope. Under the same conditions, the vehicle at the entrance and exit of the tunnel is subjected to a greater force of travel risk than inside the tunnel, and the effect of speed on the force of the risk field is greater than the distance., Conclusions: The established model better describes the trend of driving risk during the driving of vehicles in urban tunnels, and the research findings can provide theoretical support for the design and traffic management of urban tunnels.

Young people represent a high-risk group of drivers and the prevalence of road traffic crashes among young drivers is high. Thus, to increase traffic safety, it is essential to ensure that new drivers are both sufficiently educated in and assessed for risk awareness. The aim of this study was to examine the possibility and potential benefit of using a driving simulator screening test as a complement to the existing on-road driving test. The main idea is to detect drivers who are not ready to proceed to the driving test. A comparative study was performed with participants who passed and failed a simulator test and an on-road driving test, respectively. A comparison between subjective and objective measures of performance and risk was also included. A driving simulator was placed at a traffic school and customers were recruited as participants. In total, 70 participants took part in the study and the simulated drive consisted of rural roads, urban traffic, and motorways with 16 different scenarios, constructed from the second level of the GDE matrix, to examine driving behavior, attention, and risk perception. The results show that with a screening test in a driving simulator, it is possible to detect drivers who consider themselves ready to take a driving test, but who have not yet reached the level of risk awareness required to be a safe driver. Test scenarios should be suited to detect deficiencies in risk awareness, test different levels of the GDE matrix and, to complement the driving test, be difficult to assess in an on-road driving test. Deficiencies in self-evaluation that are well-known among young drivers are again confirmed. Autonomous vehicles must be comprehensively evaluated before deployed in cities and highways. However, most existing evaluation approaches for autonomous vehicles are static and model environmental vehicles with predefined trajectories, which ignore the time-sequential interactions between the ego vehicle and environmental vehicles. In this paper, we propose a dynamic test scenario generation method to evaluate autonomous vehicles by modeling environmental vehicles as agents with human behavior and simulating the interaction process between the autonomous vehicle and environmental vehicles. Considering the multimodal features of traffic scenarios, we cluster the real-word traffic environments, and integrate the scenario class labels into the conditional generative adversarial imitation learning (CGAIL) model to generate different types of traffic scenarios. The proposed method is validated in a typical lane-change scenario that involves frequent interactions between ego vehicle and environmental vehicles.
