In the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, people commonly wore words, names, letters, symbols, and images about their bodies for protection or healing. Drawing on French sources, this article examines the widespread practice of wearing textual amulets in this period as revelatory of an enduring belief in the power of words and images to protect and heal the individual who wore them. It analyzes the vehement critique of this practice by period theologians, both Protestant and Catholic, who attacked their contemporaries’ investment in the materiality of the textual object as superstition. En los siglos XVI y XVII, la gente usaba con frecuencia palabras, nombres, letras, símbolos e imágenes sobre sus cuerpos como protección o como cura. Partiendo de fuentes francesas, este artículo examina la extendida práctica de usar amuletos textuales en ese periodo de tiempo como una revelación de la creencia permanente en el poder de las palabras y las imágenes para proteger y curar a los individuos que las usaban. Se analiza la crítica vehemente de dicha práctica por los teólogos de la época, tanto protestantes como católicos, que atacaban a la inversión de sus contemporáneos en la materialidad de los objetos textuales como una superstición.

This article investigates the different shapes in which reading and writing practices occur when paper/pen are compared with keyboard/screen. The focus is on the bodily aspects of these practices. Reading and writing are viewed as techniques of the body, which over the years have become increasingly mediated by technologies. The analysis is grounded in the theory of social practice. Research material consists of written essays collected from 25 students at the University of Jyväskylä, Finland, in 2013. Results show that paper as material is considered suitable and adaptive to numerous reading purposes and bodily positions, while regarding the screen the places and positions of reading are viewed as more limited due to the material boundary conditions presented by devices. Students describe handwriting as a more flexible and relaxed bodily practice than typing, although the worsening skills of handwriting are recognized too. Skills and competences turned out to be less decisive factors than materials and images when trying to explain the differences in reading and writing practices when a paper/pen is compared with a keyboard/screen. Finally, the study argues that digital reading writing interfaces do not determine the ways we read and write as strongly as previously suggested. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: This article asks the question: what are my responsibilities as a postcolonial geographical writer? It takes as its starting point three extracts from texts written by the writer on their journey towards becoming an academic: a catalyst moment, a moment of self-production as an academic, and a moment of (failed) academic production. This journey raises a problematic around the ways in which the body speaks in academic writing, and the remainder of the piece reviews the geographical literature on materiality in relation to the body, arguing that Deleuzian views of matter as agentic and creative are particularly helpful in comprehending and engaging responsibly with the indeterminate but insistent ways in which the body speaks in postcolonial academic writing. This paper describes work with two patients who experienced an early undercathexis of the body-self. It explores the relationship between this type of deficit and the use made by the patient of the analyst's body and by extension of the body of the analytic room. I propose that in work with patients who have experienced an early undercathexis of the body-self, it is vital to identify those instances when the patient tries to make an "aesthetic link" with the analyst. This refers to how the patient may apprehend by the senses (aesthetic) a feature of the analyst's physicality, or of the physical space of the consulting room, and uses it to make a connection (link) with an as yet unrealized and wished-for embodied self that for some time can only be experienced through an identification with aspects of the analyst's body/room. This has technical implications; I suggest that interpretation of what can appear to be an idealized and/or erotic transference, but is in fact the patient's attempt to establish an aesthetic link, can be experienced as disorganizing and as undermining of a developmental thrust. This paper reports the findings of a mixed-methods study which investigates the socio-cultural impacts of UK gendered school sport uniform and the role uniform plays in shaping female school sport experiences. Drawing on an extensive analytical survey with over 400 women of all-ages and 8 interviews with women aged 18–24, it explores how school sport uniform directly impacts female sporting experiences and participation in physical activity, and how uniform policy could be changed to promote greater female sport participation. Gendered school sport uniform continues to operate as a socio-spatial mechanism that names, frames and positions young people in heteronormative school sport spaces. This paper assesses how gendered school sport uniform contributes to the disciplining of the 'ideal feminine body' in schoolgirls and the construction of behavioural gender binaries in sport. The data reveal gendered sport uniform influences the development of a 'fear of masculinisation' in sport and common athletic-feminine identity tensions in teenage girls. The research finds gendered school sport uniform plays a major role in the high drop-out rates of teenage girls in school sport and offers practical insight into how policy could be changed to promote inclusivity, comfort and greater female sport participation. This paper proposes redesigning traditional gendered school sport policy to focus on 'enabling' participation has huge potential to transform female embodied and psychological experiences of school sport and increase school sport participation and enjoyment. Object: In this paper, eight male basketball players were tested for physical fitness using the method of sports biology. The content of the physical examination is the isokinetic muscle strength of the shoulder joint. This paper aims to investigate the effect of shoulder isokinetic muscle strength on athletic performance. Methods: This paper uses the principles of sports biology and the isokinetic muscle strength test system to measure the shoulder torque and fatigue index of eight basketball players. At the same time, this paper analyzes the obtained data using the method of mathematical statistics. Results: There were significant differences in the test data of eight male basketball players (P < 0.05). The fatigue of basketball players is mainly in the middle and late stages of sports. At average speed, the fatigue index of the shoulder is the lowest at 180°/s. Conclusion: Basketball players have stronger shoulder extensors than flexors. The balance of strength in the shoulder flexors is greater than the balance in the extensors. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper draws on Merleau-Ponty's perspective on intercorporeality to inquire into the role of the body in virtual collaboration. Merleau-Ponty redefines the human body beyond pure physicality, as material-semiotic processes between self and other. From this perspective, meaningful engagements are based on the intertwinement of bodily activities including gestures and displays. Drawing on a rich case of an exclusively virtual collaboration, this paper illuminates how bodily expressivity is rematerialised through digital technology. The findings show how distributed bodies pattern an intercorporeal armature constituted of processes of co-presencing, co-orienting, and co-investing. The paper problematises claims of virtual disembodiment and advances current understanding of how body and technology merge to make virtual collaboration possible. The rich empirical insights are synthesised into four main theoretical propositions that constitute a novel perspective on virtual intercorporeality. This paper makes a journey into the sociology of the body, especially with regard to food consumption. Consumer behaviour is also the subject of study of several disciplines. In this paper we will analyze it from the point of view of the intersection between marketing and sociology. And finally, we will analyze the body and the modes of consumption as they have been socially constructed through lenses, such as ‘’body project’ a concept of sociologist Chris Shilling, mobility as described by John Urry or from the perspective of “life as a show” (Gofman, 2003). All these lenses can be viewed reflexively. Nick Crossley (2006) considers that bodily reflexivity is a general feature of current societies, societies in which the body has become an important factor in the field of social relations. This paper explores what is understood by the phrase ‘spontaneous movement’. We discern five different understandings of spontaneity in the usage of the phrase: 1) spontaneous movement as automatic machine-like mechanistic, 2) spontaneous movement as free, 3) spontaneous movement as primal animateness of the body, 4) spontaneous movement as embodied responsive dealing in the world, 5) spontaneous movement as a force of nature. The first two understandings are rooted in a dualistic view, with the dichotomies of voluntary/involuntary and mind/body in the Western philosophical tradition. The next two arise from a phenomenological reflection on the body, drawn from Husserl and Merleau-Ponty, while the last comes from a holistic Eastern view of the body, human beings and nature. We argue that the latter three understandings of spontaneity demonstrate three aspects of a more comprehensive picture of the spontaneity of human movement. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper is a brief presentation of the research project called "The diet for weight loss. A study carried out on young high school students". The first part is an argument for choosing the theme, namely the weight loss diet for young people, in the context of the increase in the number of people who manifest nutritional disorders and obesity. This continues with a conceptualization of the terms diet, mass media, family and peer group, internal and external, then with the questions that need answering, following the conduct of the research and the presentation of the relevant literature for the research topic. In Orphism, through Pythagoras to Plato, the soul survives the death of the body. But for Aristotle it is the form of the body, and this makes its immortality unlikely, since form cannot exist without an individuating matter. Exploring synthesis, the soul is for Aquinas an incarnate spirit whose union with the body creates a unique union. This paper then employing the critical-analytic model argued that these traditions were quite myopic; and this informed the interrogation of another cultural position which is, the immortality of the soul in Igbo-African ontology. The intention is to brace the classical positions towards a holistic idea of the immortality of the soul. This is because, in Igbo ontology, there is no distinction between body and soul, as the attention is on man as a complete being, who at death experiences what this paper called ontological mutation. This paper draws on 3 years of ethnographic research with young children and their families in a northern English town, employing a more‐than‐human lens to pay attention to what, beyond humans, might be involved in the emergence of children's literacies. The paper focuses on the role of the body and place in the emergence of young children's vocalisations and talk. In particular, the paper rethinks the dominant assumption that children's language is primarily for the purpose of transparently conveying meaning. It does this by drawing on posthuman and decolonial scholarship on childhood and language, and particularly on the work of Glissant on opacity and difference, in order to interrogate the relationship between expression, understanding and power. Thus, the paper outlines how an understanding of the relationship between body, place and talk might inform pedagogy by highlighting the need for space to embrace divergent, complicated, irrational, playful and non‐functional language practices in early childhood, rather than looking for rapid, straight line development.
