This paper investigates the relationship among income inequality, carbon emissions rate, and economic growth in Burkina Faso and Nigeria in the period 1980–2016. Using the ARDL bounds approach to ascertain the short‐ and long‐run dynamics of the variables, the paper examined whether or not income inequality, poverty, and growth affected environmental quality in both countries. Findings indicated a U‐shaped inverted connection between environmental degradation and income growth in Nigeria while the U‐shaped relationship was found in Burkina Faso. The relationship between income inequality and environmental degradation in both countries was positive while government expenditure and poverty were found to increasing carbon emissions in the long‐run, only in Nigeria. The short‐run results showed that income inequality reduced carbon dioxide emissions in Nigeria and had significant and adverse effects in Burkina Faso. Consequently, policymakers must pay equal attention to income inequality and poverty alleviation on the one hand and cleaning the environment and economic growth on the other hand. Gas flaring, a practice described as environmentally damaging and financially wasteful, still persists on a large scale in the Nigerian oil and gas industry. Firstly, this paper investigates the vulnerability of the Nigerian economic performance to environmental pollution by estimating and analysing the relationship between carbon emission from gas flaring and Nigeria's GDP. Secondly, the study examines how transparency and gas utilisation policies, deployed by the country, are performing in dealing with vulnerability to carbon emission from gas flaring. The paper uses an autoregressive distributed lag bounds testing approach to cointegration and error‐correction‐based Granger causality. The paper establishes that carbon emission from gas flaring affects Nigeria's GDP negatively in both the short and long run. However, the results show that GDP has started exhibiting resilience to carbon emission from gas flaring in the long run. Findings imply that even though transparency and gas utilisation policies are doing well in increasing GDP's long‐run resilience, persistent carbon emission from gas flaring continues to cause short‐run and long‐run economic vulnerability. Climate change is one of the global issues being combatted in recent times. One of the measures is a worldwide cutdown on carbon emissions. This has brought about the rapid development of technologies that can best actualise this goal. The decentralised energy system is designed to harness the strengths of small power-generating sources such as renewable energy sources in a noncentralised manner to help meet the global need for clean energy. Renewable energy sources are faced with the challenge of intermittency, which brings about instability in the grid. Another source of clean energy is nuclear energy, which is traditionally large and not flexible; however, the recent development of technology has resulted in a scaled-down version of the large nuclear plants that are more flexible yet provide clean and stable electricity. This paper explores the possibility of deploying nuclear microreactors in the decentralised energy system and describes the features and the challenges of a decentralised energy system. The features of the small modular reactor that make it a viable candidate for the generating source in the decentralised energy system are explored. A case study for a DES system with a microreactor was conducted for a rural area in Nigeria. The HOMER software was used in simulating the optimum system, while TOPSIS was used in ranking the systems. Population expansion and increased industrialization are driving up global energy demand. Similarly, the most populous African country, Nigeria generates and transmits electricity far less than is required to meet her basic residential and industrial demands. Alternative means such as fossil fuelpowered generators to complement these demands are still not sufficient to meet these demands with notice to their limitation such as high lifecycle cost and carbon dioxide emission. Renewable energy resources are suitable substitutes for existing electricity sources to fulfil growing demand. Extensively in this paper, a review on the research progress of Hybrid Renewable Energy Systems (HRESs) and Integrated Renewable Energy Systems (IRESs) in the different continents of the world was presented considering methodologies, approaches, and parameters such as technical, economic, and emission limitation in determining the optimal renewable energy system in their present locality. According to the study's findings, about 63% and 22% of the research were conducted in Asia and Africa respectively, from which the research is mostly conducted in rural and remote areas of these continents. Purpose: Carbon emissions from gas flaring in the Nigerian oil and gas industry are both a national and international problem. Nigerian government policies to eliminate the problem 1960-2016 yielded little or no results. The Kyoto Protocol (KP) provides Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) as an international market-based mechanism to reducing global carbon emissions. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to analytically highlight the potentials of CDM in eliminating carbon emissions in the Nigerian oil and gas industry. Design/methodology/approach: This paper reviewed the historical background of Kyoto protocol, Nigerian Government policies to eliminating gas flaring in its oil and gas industry 1960-2016 and CDM projects in the industry. The effectiveness of the policies and CDM projects towards ending this problem were descriptively analysed. Findings: Government policies towards eliminating gas flaring with its attendant carbon emissions appeared not to be yielding the desired results. However, projects registered under CDM in the industry looks effective in ending the problem. Research limitations/implications: Therefore, the success recorded by CDM projects has the policy implication of encouraging Nigeria to engage on establishing more CDM projects that ostensibly proved effective in reducing CO2 emissions through gas flaring reductions in its oil and gas industry. Apparent effectiveness of studied CDM should provide a way forward for the country in eliminating gas flaring in its oil and gas industry which is also a global menace. Nigeria could achieve this by providing all needed facilitation to realising more CDM investments. Practical implications: CDM as a policy has proved effective in eliminating gas flaring in the Nigerian oil and gas industry. The government should adopt this international policy to achieve more gas flaring reductions. Social implications: Social problems of respiratory diseases, water pollution and food shortage among others due to gas flaring are persisting in oil and gas producing areas as government policies failed to end the problem. CDM projects in the industry have proved effective in eliminating the problem, thus improving the social welfare of the people and ensuring sustainable development. Despite consistent investments, grants, and other concessions in the power sector, nationwide power outages still remain an issue, even in 2020, disrupting business operations, contributing to huge recurrent expenses on generators and alternative sources of electricity in homes, businesses, and institutions. In this paper, we examine the role of electricity consumption on economic growth, while controlling for labor, capital, and carbon emissions, using the autoregressive distributed lag (ARDL) and the novel dynamic ARDL (DYNARDL) simulation analysis over the periods 1981–2019. Empirical results show that electricity consumption, capital, and labor exert positive inelastic impacts, while carbon emissions exert negative inelastic significant impact on economic growth within the period under investigation. From policy standpoint, we are of the opinion that stable supply and consumption of electricity can possibly boost economic growth and engender social stability in Nigeria. Thus, there is a need to strengthen the effectiveness of power sector and its energy generating agencies by ensuring periodic replacement of worn-out equipment in terms of adequately financed and efficient labor in order to enhance the contribution of the sector on economic growth, while in terms of environmental degradation, policy makers should work towards promotion of green economy for a sustainable economic growth and environment in Nigeria. It is expected that fuel subsidy removal should hinder carbon emissions growth through low energy consumption channels amid higher energy prices. However, outliers in this theoretical disposition make empirical proof of the fuel subsidy-carbon intensity apt and primitive. Despite established fuel subsidy abolishment gains for climate and economic welfare, the relevance, magnitude and policy implications remain dimly. This paper employs the non-linear autoregressive distributed lag (NARDL) estimation procedure to gauge the contemporaneous influence of fuel subsidy for carbon intensity in Nigeria. Findings revealed that fuel subsidy removal inversely relates to Nigeria's carbon emission in the short run and long run. The study recommends a complementary policy option that ensures additional financial savings to the government should be invested in public sector growth that can cushion the effect of relative income loss to the citizenry. Energy is one of the essential components for the social and economic growth of urban and rural communities worldwide. However, the lack of energy supply is one of the most significant challenges facing remote or local communities in Nigeria. Distributed generation systems based on renewable energy, conventional sources, or hybrid resources are possible energy production solutions for these communities. This paper, therefore, focused on providing an energy generation system based on photovoltaics (PV) and diesel generators (DG) for stand-alone applications. A comparative analysis was carried out to assess the impact of control strategies, namely load following (LF), cycle charging (CC), and combined dispatch (CD). The designed energy systems: 60 kW PV, 78.69 kW PV, PV-DG-LF, PV-DG-CC, and PV-DG-CD were simulated using HOMER Pro while technical, economic, and environmental indices were used as performance metrics. Simulation results showed that 60 kW PV generated 84,927 and 75,859 kWh, without and with temperature effect, respectively, with the corresponding unmet electric load (UEL) of 13.8 and 14.2%. The result further demonstrated that PV-DG-LF is the optimal design with the highest renewable penetration of 80.7% and the least annual total fuel consumption (TFC) of 6,594 l. The economic results further confirm the suitability of PV-DG-LF with the lowest fuel cost (FC) and moderate cost of energy (COE) of $219,934 and 0.302 $/kWh, respectively. The PV-DG-LF is found to be more environmentally friendly, with the least annual CO 2 emission of 16,629.652 kg. This paper investigated the techno-economic viability assessment of solar PV/wind/diesel generator (DG)/battery hybrid energy systems (HES) for powering an isolated rural health clinic in northern Nigeria. HOMER–software tool developed by the US National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) has been utilized for the techno-economic assessment of the proposed HES. The results of the simulation reveal that PV/DG/battery HES with 5.43 kW PV, 2 kW DG, 3.06 kW power converter, and 10 units of batteries emerged as the optimum system and most preferable with the minimum Net Present Cost (NPC) of $16,457 and Cost of Energy (COE) of $0.259/kWh compared to other system cases. The outcome also shows that the optimized solution is environmentally friendly as it presented an acceptable carbon dioxide emission of 1304 kg/year, which was about 80% and 82.5% less than that of system case 3 (DG/battery) and system case 5 (DG-Only). To have a good understanding of the operation of various system configurations considered, details of the system's battery storage status and power flow are discussed via the energy balance of the various system configurations. The present paper investigates the impact of financial development on carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions from the agricultural sector in Nigeria. In an agricultural dependent economy such as Nigeria, the nation depends on the agriculture sector to feed its growing population and to foster economic development. However, in this study, we consider CO2 emission from the agriculture sector to be the indicator for the environmental quality. We posit that like any other developing economy, there is a role play by the financial sector to promote growth and progress in enhancing economic development. The pursuit for economic development will ultimately result in environmental pollution. We employ the Autoregressive Distributed Lag (ARDL) approach on annual data spanning from 1971-2011. The control variables included in this study comprises national income, energy consumption, foreign direct investment and population. Our results suggest that all variables exhibit long-run relationship with CO2 emissions from the agricultural sector. Financial development and national income show negative relationship with CO2 emissions from agricultural sector, suggesting that economic development has not taken place at the expense of CO2 emissions. This study seeks to address pertinent economic and environmental issues associated with natural gas flaring, especially for the world's leading natural gas flaring economies (i.e. Russia, Iraq, Iran, the United States, Algeria, Venezuela, and Nigeria). By applying relevant empirical panel and country-specific approaches, the study found that fuel energy export positively impacts economic growth with elasticity of ~ 0.22 to ~ 0.24 for the panel examination. It is further revealed that environmental quality in the panel is hampered by increase in economic growth, gas flaring, fuel energy export, and urbanization. Moreover, for the country-wise inference, government quality desirably moderates economic and environmental aspects of gas flaring in Venezuela and Nigeria, and in Russia and Iran respectively. However, government quality moderates gas flaring to cause economic downturn in the USA. Additionally, economic growth increased with increase in urbanisation (in Iraq and the USA), gas flaring (in Iran and the USA), government quality (only in the USA), and fuel energy export (only in Algeria) while economic growth downturn is due to increase urbanisation in Russia and the USA, increase in fuel energy export in the USA, and increase in government quality in Russia. Meanwhile, environmental quality is worsened through intense carbon dioxide emission from increased urbanisation activity (in Iraq, Iran, Algeria, and Nigeria), increased fuel energy export (in Nigeria), increased natural gas flaring (in Algeria and Nigeria), increased GDP (in Russia, Iran, USA, Algeria, and Venezuela), and high government quality (in Iran). Interestingly, the result revealed that increase in GDP (in Nigeria), increase in urbanisation (in the USA), and increase in gas flaring (in Algeria and Nigeria) dampens environmental quality. Nigeria's per capital emission figures and aggregated greenhouse gases concentration are projected to grow exponentially under the normal economic growth scenario. Climate system interference and declining productive arable land questions the capability of existing natural resource stock to support a projected population in excess of 300 million by 2050. Stabilizing greenhouse gases emission and preserving the ecosystem sustainability requires confronting every scale of environmental degradation through robust and resilient green-growth strategies. Formulating adaptation and mitigations strategies for deploying innovative low carbon policies, yet institutional framework with legislative backing and non-governmental actors are germane in mobilising wholescale solutions to overcome bottlenecks affecting immediate and long-term transition to low-carbon climate change resilient society. With the desirability of attaining its voluntary NDC, the feasibility of navigating pathways centred on the political thrust, inclusive diplomacy and proven policies to address developmental challenges, submission/attainments can be skewed to interpretations linked to partisan manifestos if independent third-party assessments are lacking. Synthesizing this paper will reveal Nigeria performance through a broad systematic data evaluation to accentuate contextual interpretations, national milestones, gaps and how impacts are localized on the subnational structures. The increasing mismatch between the demand and supply of power in Nigeria raises concerns about the ability of this country to meet its vital energy security and sustainability targets in a demography-growing environment. This paper assesses how these three factors comove over the long run. While Nigeria provides an illustrative case, a multivariate framework including population dynamics, the demand for electricity, and CO 2 emissions from the power and heating sector is set with actual time-series data spanning the last five decades. Two independent estimation strategies are conducted: a time-series analysis (i.e., Least Squares with breaks regression) is complemented with Machine Learning experiments (i.e., ML Clustering method). The Nigerian government is committed to sustaining rice production to meet national demand. Nevertheless, political tension and climate-induced stressors remain crucial constraints in achieving policy targets. This study examines whether climate change and political instability significantly threaten rice production in Nigeria. First, we employed nonparametric methods to estimate the country's rainfall and temperature trends between 1980Q1 and 2015Q4. Second, we employed the autoregressive distributed lag (ARDL) technique to examine the effects of climate change and political instability on rice production. The results show that while temperature has an increasing pattern, rainfall exhibits no significant trend. The findings from the ARDL estimate reveal that rice production responds negatively to temperature changes but is less sensitive to changes in rainfall. In addition, political instability adversely affects rice production in Nigeria. We argue that Nigeria's slow growth in rice production can be traced back to the impact of climate change and political tension in rice farming areas. As a result, reducing the overall degree of conflict to ensure political stability is critical to boosting the country's self-sufficiency in rice production. We also recommend that farmers be supported and trained to adopt improved rice varieties less prone to extreme climate events while supporting them with irrigation facilities to facilitate rice production. We adopt the FMOLS and Granger causality technique to analyse the effect of energy use and carbon emissions on output growth in selected West African economies, which includes Nigeria, Gambia and Ghana, from 1970 to 2019. Findings confirm that energy use enhances growth in the three selected West African economies. But in terms of significance, energy consumption is significant in Nigeria and Gambia at a 1% level of significance while it is insignificant for the Gambia. CO2 emission positively and significantly propels economic growth for the three selected West African economies. For Nigeria, causality evidence shows no direct influence among the variables. For Ghana, we find a bi-causal association between output growth and carbon emissions and a unidirectional causality from pollution to energy consumption. For Gambia, economic growth causes CO2 emissions. We recommend that the West African government reinforce their stand on a sustainable growth path through energy conservation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study explores the relationship between economic growth and carbon dioxide and the moderating effect of institutional quality in Nigeria from 1990 to 2020, by employing long-run and short-run dynamic ARDL regression, quartile regression and Granger causality test for the estimation. Utilizing CO2 per capita emissions; GDP per capita, a proxy for economic growth; capital stock (CAPSTK), proxy for capital investment in Nigeria and control of corruption and regulatory quality (COC and RGQ) which represent the effective environmental regulations and laws put in place for the control and prevention of environmental degradation, the study found a significant cointegration between CO2 emissions and economic growth (lnGDP) in Nigeria. Furthermore, an N-shaped nexus exists between CO2 emissions and economic growth in the long-run and short-run instead of the inverted U-shape curve postulated by the EKC hypothesis. This was confirmed by both ARDL and quartile regression results. Similarly, InCAPSTK contributed significantly to the growth of CO2 emissions in Nigeria both in the long run and short run; although, the short run did so at 10% significant level. Contrary to expectations, control of corruption (COC) contributes significantly to CO2 emissions in the long run, but when it interacts with income (InGDP × COC), it significantly contributes to the reduction of CO2 emissions. More so, regulatory quality (RGQ) had no significant impact on CO2 emissions in Nigeria either in the long run or short run, even when it interacts with InGDP. This finding is further supported by the quartile regression outcomes and Granger causality. The study therefore concludes that CO2 emissions–economic growth nexus in Nigeria assumes an N-shape both in the long run and short run. Based on the results, the study recommends that Government should pursue industrialisation policy with sophisticated method of production that will bring about rapid economic progress and at the same time support environmental sustainability. This research investigates the necessity for transformation of wastes to energy for environmentally friendly and improvement in Nigeria's power sector for sustainability, to reduce greenhouse gas discharges and to encourage financings of renewable energy resources, and to alleviate the anxieties on dumping of deleterious wastes in Nigeria. The research utilises a library-centred doctrinal legal study modus operandi with a conceptual methodology, count on current researches. It investigates the effectiveness of subsisting legal regime and other regulations and policies which are requisite on the procedure of waste administration involving electricity generation in the country. Furthermore, the study conducts a quantitative assessment concerning augmented dickey fuller for analysing the stationarity of the data sequences and abound test cointegration approach to ascertain the subsistence of enduring connection between carbon emission and its determinants. A relative assessment of the renewable energy practise via biological wastes to electricity in other nations was also performed in this research. Additionally, the study uses dogmatic-legal analysis which draws on the results of linguistic grammatical, systemic, and teleological (purposive) interpretation of the existing legal regime on solid waste management and electricity generation in Nigeria. The study's fundamental finding indicates that when the Federal Government takes pragmatic actions to combat waste dumping, it will curtail waste from the numerous bases in compliance with the regulatory and statutory obligations. This can be exploited to produce power while carbon emissions are regulated. The research investigates the consequence of metropolitan solid waste administration and electricity sources on carbon emissions, advocating substitution of power generation source in tackling environmental problems in the country. The study ends with suggestions for the amalgamation of policies and non-statutory encouragements for transforming waste to energy in the country's power industry and prescribes comprehensible law on energy bases with strict execution of electricity regulations for constant electricity generation and sustainability in the country's electricity industry. In 2019, Nigeria contributed 7, 825 million cubic meters (mln m3/yr) to global greenhouse gas emissions. A legal framework has been developed to curb gas flaring and create the incentive to utilise flare gas, which is derived in part from existing legislation, and from market-based incentives. This developed a mechanism to convert waste gas into wealth while protecting health and the environment - a winning formula. Given that the objective of the framework is to guard against waste and protect the environment, it has wasted an opportunity to convert flare emissions into wealth by creating a framework for the deployment of carbon technologies to guard against the environmental impact of gas flaring. This is pertinent because as the industry transits to low carbon, and as oil exploration is expected to continue in the immediate future, critical stakeholders are now investing in carbon technologies. The legal framework mostly channels its technologydriven approach towards utilising flare gas. However, this article finds that the mechanism for converting flare gas to wealth in the legal framework presents an opportunity to harness the potential carbon technologies to develop mechanisms for capturing and utilising carbon from flare facilities, building other industry ecosystems, and developing other environmentally sustainable value chains. As Nigeria continues to explore its petroleum resources, a framework to encourage its deployment is missing. This article analysis carbon technologies highlighting how they are deployed to tackle emissions and utilise emitted carbon. It also reviews the legal framework for curbing gas flaring in Nigeria and proposes by way of recommendation a legal framework for the deployment of carbon technologies to curb the environmental impact of gas flaring in Nigeria that paves the way for incentivising and developing other environmentally sustainable industrial ecosystems that utilise captured emissions from flare sites. Health outcomes in sub-Saharan Africa are characteristically poor and Nigeria is no exception. Despite the recorded decline in infant and under five mortality rates in Nigeria, they still remain relatively high showing a poor status of the population's health. Carbon dioxide emission continues to fluctuate at high levels probably due to the increasing use of non renewable energy forms for economic activities mostly requiring energy consumption. This study examines the health consequences of environmental quality due to carbon dioxide emission in Nigeria for the period 1980 to 2016. Using two health outcome measures and decomposing carbon dioxide emission by sector and type of fuel consumed, a bound cointegration approach and an autoregressive distributed lag model were also employed. The results and a sensitivity analysis revealed that aggregate carbon dioxide emission significantly explained both infant mortality and under five mortality rates. Purpose: This study evaluates the impact of carbon emission on life expectancy in Nigeria. The study also investigates the mediating role of agricultural output and foreign direct investment as suggested by the environmental Kuznets curve (EKC) and the pollution haven hypothesis (PHH), respectively. Design/methodology/approach: The hypotheses and theories were tested using structural equation modeling (SEM). Primary data were collected using cross-sectional survey design. Questionnaires were distributed and responses were used to measure the latent variables of the study. A confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) was used to evaluate the measurement models, while path analysis was used to estimate the coefficients of the structural equations. Findings: Carbon emission was found to have a negative and significant impact on life expectancy. This impact constituted both direct and indirect effects that were mediated by both foreign direct investment and agricultural output. Carbon emission and agricultural output were found to play significant roles that lead to a further negative- and significant-mediated relationship of carbon emission with life expectancy. Originality/value: Unlike many previous studies on air pollution, this study investigates carbon emission in particular as well as the mediating role of agricultural output and foreign direct investment in the carbon emission and life expectancy relationship. The delegation of government fiscal expenditure is a significant avenue via which the required environmental quality is intended to be accomplished. Climate change is a big worry across the world. Every government is putting forth enormous effort to handle the problem in order to keep human occupancy across the globe. It is not out of place for the government to prudently allocate the necessary resources to Nigeria's three levels of government in order to maintain the environment. The government budget is the primary tool for capturing this expenditure obligation and enabling governments at all levels to bear it successfully. As a result, this study investigates the effectiveness of the three levels of government's fiscal obligations in reducing CO2 emissions in Nigeria. The study spans the years 2005 through 2020, with data analyzed utilizing numerous regression techniques and correlation. According to the data, state fiscal expenditure has a minor destructive impression on haze secretion management, however local government has a large deleterious bearing with smoke decline. On the other hand, federal government budgetary expenditure has a considerable and favorable influence on CO2 emission control. As a result, increased government resources are required to address the environmental pollution challenge. According to the report, all levels of government should invest heavily in green technologies in order to attain pollution-free living conditions. The current study investigates the causal relations between CO2 emissions and the growth of Nigeria's economy, a topic of significant interest for the relevant authorities that has yet to be comprehensively examined. We test both the nonlinear and time-varying nature of the variables' relationships to provide effective and applicable policies. Unlike the linear method's lack of causal evidence, both nonlinear and time-varying Granger causality tests indicate the presence of dual causation between the variables. This suggests that appropriate and cost-effective environmental policies need to be adopted in Nigeria to prevent sustainable economic growth from being jeopardized while addressing environmental concerns. In this regard, it is recommended that clean energy resources make a greater contribution to the country's energy paradigm as a viable solution. This research formulates a theoretical framework to investigate the impacts of trade on consumption-based carbon emissions (CCO2) and also takes into account the influence of financial development and renewable energy use utilizing panel data for Mexico, Indonesia, Nigeria, and Turkey (MINT) nations between 1990 and 2017. The study utilizes a series of second-generation techniques such as Westerlund cointegration, cross-sectional augmented autoregressive distributed lag (CS-ARDL), and augmented mean group (AMG) tests to capture the linkage between CCO2 emissions and the independent variables. The study aims to answer the following questions: (a) can exports and imports determine CCO2 emissions in the MINT nations? (b) Is there a long-run association among the variables under investigation? The results of the Westerlund cointegration reveal a long-run association among the variables. The CS-ARDL outcomes indicate that imports and economic growth increase CCO2 emissions, while renewable energy use and exports decrease CCO2 emissions. Moreover, the outcomes of the AMG test also give credence to the CS-ARDL results. This study revisits the 2030 United Nations Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 2 which aims to "end hunger, achieve food security, improve nutrition and promote sustainable agriculture" by highlighting the impact of environmental degradation (proxied by carbon emissions) and non-renewable energy on agro-productivity in Nigeria. Using annual time series data from 1980 to 2018, the study engages the Johansen cointegration and impulse response functions (IRFs) techniques within the vector autoregressive (VAR) framework. Evidence reveals that carbon emissions significantly reduce agro-productivity by 0.23% while non-renewable energy boosts agro-productivity by 5.38%, on average, ceteris paribus. Other results reveal that domestic credit, rural population and arable land exert asymmetric effects. These outcomes are consistent and align with a priori expectations. As the public draws most of its information on scientific issues from the media, studies of media coverage of climate change have proliferated. Here, we analyze whether newspapers in developing countries frame climate action as an adaptation or mitigation issue. Mitigation refers to activities to reduce or prevent carbon emissions whereas adaptation refers to activities to adjust economic and social systems to the effects of climate change. To this end, we conduct a comparative quantitative analysis of climate change news framing in newspapers from two carbon locked-in developing countries: Nigeria and Turkey. Our first research question is whether newspapers in the two countries frame climate change as a mitigation or adaptation issue. Our second research question is whether there is a relationship between the use of foreign sources and the use of a mitigation frame. We find more adaptation framing in Nigerian newspapers whereas adaptation and mitigation frames are more evenly seen in Turkish newspapers. We also find that the use of foreign sources in news with a climate action frame is negatively correlated with the use of an adaptation frame in our sample. The consequences of carbon dioxide emission have negative effect on human health, other natural and manmade resources. This was while on one hand, European emission trading scheme was introduced with the aim of reducing the level of carbon dioxide emission and on the other hand it can improve firms' performance and lead to economic growth through trading of marketable carbon emission. There is a gap in the literature about European emission trading scheme, and its application for oil prices and firm performance in Nigeria, as there is no known research done on effect of EU ETS on Nigeria oil prices and stock market returns. The aim of this study is to examine the effects of European emission trading system on oil prices and stock exchange in Nigeria. Therefore, to achieve the research objectives, the relationship between the dimensions of EU ETS and market value and oil prices will be analyzed using panel data regression models. This model will prove the significance of the results generated. Data will be collected from the published financial reports of the selected companies that are regulated by EU ETS. The study investigates the impact of economic growth and fuel subsidy on the environment of Nigeria from the year 1985-2018. We used Auto-regressive Distributed Lag (ARDL) to analyse the data employed in this study. From our findings, it was revealed that output per head had a positive and significant impact on carbon emission both in the long-run and short-run, while subsidy which explains government policy also had a negative and significant impact on carbon emission both in the short-run and long-run. The Error Correction Model (ECM) showed that 96% of shocks in the response variable are corrected in the long-run by the independent variables. It was concluded that increasing output in the economy increases the amount of carbon emission in the economy while removal of fuel subsidy reduces the amount of carbon emission in the economy. Following the global alertness and consciousness over the increasing warming and heating on the ground of climate change, over 200 countries including Nigeria have committed themselves in reducing this global phenomenon. Nigeria being among the countries placed with individual country's task and also known as a one-economy operating county because of its oil and gas gifting is subject to investigation of its efforts and result in decarburization of its economy and environment. The oil and gas sector of Nigeria has been identified as the major sector where the heavy utilization of energy is centered on through mining and exploration activities of these foreign companies who have investments and stakes in the main stream sector. This is the major reason of adopting FDI as a major variable to test the performance of the environmental condition of the country. To effectively carry this research, the authors, adopt, cointegration test and the linear ARDL test to unveil the true picture of the foreign investors impact on carbon emission reduction. Among the findings is the positive but not significant interaction between economic growth and carbon emission which infers the capability of the economic operation to initiate the degradation in the environment via pollutant emission. Energy use depicts inducement to carbon emission with positive association with carbon emission. FDI established both negative and positive relationship with carbon emission at initial stage and lag 1 respectively. All the variables point towards carbon emission increase in the country which call for serious attention towards decarburization of the country to fall in line with the agreed policy of Paris formation.
