Transitioning to clean cooking fuels is not only part of achieving SDG7 but also makes a significant contribution to mitigating climate change by reducing carbon emissions. Research projects and pilots across a number of countries in Africa and South Asia have been exploring the suitability and energy performance of different cooking appliances and fuels. The paper presents the first statistical analysis across these multiple datasets to determine the range of energy required to cook dishes using different technologies and fuels. The paper draws out distinctions between African and Asian dishes, notably the impact of energy-intensive dishes prepared mostly in Africa. The paper demonstrates that the standard efficiency-based approaches to comparing the performance of stoves are not appropriate to modern electric cooking devices, so a novel alternative approach based on specific energy consumption and termed energy ratios is developed. Charcoal stoves are shown to use 15 times as much energy as electric pressure cookers (EPCs) to cook African dishes, and a detailed review of how the EPC works explains why this should be. Energy ratios provide a basis for estimating carbon emission reductions associated with transitioning to modern cooking fuels and also for estimating household cooking costs. Fuel and electricity prices from studies show that the cost of cooking with an EPC can be only 20% of the cost of cooking with charcoal, which highlights the potential for modern, energy-efficient electric cooking devices to defy the conventional wisdom of the energy ladder. Purpose: The purpose of this paper is twofold: to explore the interrelationships between FDI with growth and sustainability dimension; and to empirically analyze the four dimensions, namely, environmental, economic, social and governance of sustainable FDI for South Asia and West Asia. Design/methodology/approach: The data utilized in the paper is sourced from the World Development Indicators and the Worldwide Governance Indicators, covering South and West Asian region over the period 2011–2017. The paper employed both static and dynamic panel (two-step difference generalized methods of moments) estimation methods. Findings: The results established a significant and robust relationship of past year FDI inflows with the current year's value of FDI inflows for both the regions. Further, some variances in the relationships such as control of corruption, long-run carbon emissions, research and development, number of trademark applications as per the contextual factors have been detected. Research limitations/implications: The conclusions related to gender and governance found in this paper will be of interest to both researchers and policy makers for substantially reorienting the sustainability attributes to the foreign investment. The phenomenal increase in global temperature and variation in climate change are the replications of nature, alarming governments to limit the emissions of greenhouse gases (GHGs) and adopt green innovation and environmental-friendly clean and green technologies. In this paper, we empirically investigate whether there are any changes in excessive consumption of energy from conventional sources, expansion of urbanization, carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions, and economic growth in six different regions, namely, East Asia (EA), South Asia (SA), Southeast Asia (SEA), Central Asia (CA), Eastern Europe (EE), and the Middle East and North Africa (MENA), under the Belt and Road Initiatives of panel data over the period of 1985 to 2017. The empirical methods include a panel co-integration check, heterogeneity test, panel Granger causality test, pooled mean group (PMG), and augmented mean group (AMG). To verify the outcomes, robustness tests were carried out using the fully modified ordinary least squares (FMOLS) and dynamic ordinary least squares (DOLS) approaches. Our results confirm that CO2 emissions are primarily influenced by excessive utilization of conventional energy, economic growth, and expansion of urbanization. The findings confirm the co-integrating relationships among the variables in all six regions. Moreover, the panel causality analysis identified a bidirectional causal relationship between energy consumption, economic growth, urbanization, and CO2 emissions. While these results can play an instrumental role in formulating CO2 emission policies among our selected countries, our research can also assist policymakers and governments in other developing countries implement important policy initiatives. In this regard, the findings suggest that the current environment-related polices of Belt and Road Initiatives (BRI) do not efficiently tackle CO2 emissions. In order to achieve the CO2 emission degradation objective, the Belt and Road countries should restructure their environment-related policies by limiting the consumption of conventional energy and expansion of urbanization. China's economy has made significant strides in the past three decades. As a direct result of China's "one belt, one road" (OBOR) initiative, the country's rate of industrialization and urbanization is currently the fastest in the entire world. This rapid development is largely dependent on the enormous amounts of energy currently being consumed and forms the foundation of the world's high levels of carbon emissions. It is generally agreed that the production of greenhouse gases, particularly carbon dioxide, is the primary contributor to the current state of climate change. In this paper, a CO2 emission prediction model based on Bi-LSTM is constructed. In order to conduct empirical tests on the model, this study uses data from South Asian countries and China from 2001 to 2020. China's CO2 emissions from 2022 to 2030 were predicted along with those of other countries in order to study the combined effects of the scientific and technological progress, industrial structures, and energy structure factors affecting CO2 emissions. When compared with the LSTM and GRU methods, the Bi-LSTM model's results produced lower MAE, MSE, and MAPE values, indicating that it performs better. According to the findings, carbon emissions represent a significant problem that will become much worse in the future due to China and India's high emissions, particularly in the next 10 years, if the government does not implement policies that help reduce those emissions. Global climate change adversities have particularly sparked the urgency in mitigating carbon dioxide emissions across the world. Against this backdrop, the paper attempts to investigate the validity of the carbon dioxide emission-induced Environmental Kuznets Curve (EKC) hypothesis controlling for the impacts of export quality on the economic growth-carbon dioxide emission nexus in the context of selected South Asian economies: Bangladesh, India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Nepal. Using annual data from 1972 to 2014, the results from the panel data econometric analyses provide statistical validity to the EKC hypothesis while the country-specific results depict heterogeneity of the findings in this regard. The EKC hypothesis is validated only for Bangladesh and India while in the context of Pakistan the economic growth-carbon dioxide emission nexus portrays a U-shaped association. In contrast, economic growth is found to monotonically decrease carbon dioxide emissions in Sri Lanka and Nepal. Besides, the results from both the panel and time-series analyses suggest that improvement in export quality lead to lower levels of carbon dioxide emissions. Moreover, the statistical significance of the interaction term between economic growth and export quality implies that the overall impacts of economic growth on carbon dioxide emissions are conditional on the quality of the exports. Improving environmental quality across South Asia has become one of the utmost important policy agendas of the concerned governments. The susceptibility of the majority of the South Asian countries to multifaceted climate change adversities has motivated the need to identify the factors that can function to ensure environmental sustainability across South Asia. Although several studies have highlighted the importance of globalization and cleaner energy use in tackling the environmental degradaton issues of the South Asian countries, very little is known regarding the impacts of regional trade and renewable energy transition in this regard. Hence, this paper aims to scrutinize the effects of enhancing intra‐regional trade integration and undergoing renewable energy transition on per capita carbon dioxide emissions in the context of six South Asian nations between 1990 and 2016. The results from the recently developed cross‐sectionally augmented autoregressive distributed lag regression approach, accounting for cross‐sectional dependency and slope heterogeneity issues, reveal that facilitating trade among the South Asian neighbors reduces carbon emissions in both the short and long run. Moreover, enhancing the share of renewable energy in the aggregate energy consumption figures is also found to reduce carbon dioxide emissions in both the short and long run. Furthermore, both regional trade integration and renewable energy transition are found to jointly reduce carbon dioxide emissions in South Asia. The results also authenticate the existence of the environmental Kuznets curve hypothesis, while financial development and urbanization are found to boost carbon dioxide emissions only in the long run. Over the past few decades, the tropospheric ozone precursor anthropogenic emissions: nitrogen oxides (NOx) and reactive carbon (RC) from mid-latitude regions have been decreasing, and those from Asia and tropical regions have been increasing, leading to an equatorward emission redistribution. In this study, we quantify the contributions of various sources of NOx and RC emissions to tropospheric ozone using a source attribution technique during the 2000–2018 period in a global chemistry transport model: CAM4-Chem. We tag the ozone molecules with the source of their NOx or RC precursor emission in two separate simulations, one for each of NOx and RC. These tags include various natural (biogenic, biomass burning, lightning and methane), and regional anthropogenic (North American, European, East Asian, South Asian etc.) precursor emission sources. We simulate ~336 Tg O3 with an increasing trend of 0.91 Tg O3/yr (0.28 %/yr), largely contributed (and trend driven) by anthropogenic NOx emissions and methane. The ozone production efficiency of regional anthropogenic NOx emissions increases significantly when emissions decrease (Europe, North American and Russia-Belarus-Ukraine region's emissions) and decreases significantly when emissions increase (South Asian, Middle Eastern, International Shipping etc.). Tropical regions, despite smaller emissions, contribute more to tropospheric ozone burden compared to emissions from higher latitudes, consistent with previous work, due to large convection at the tropics thereby lifting O3 and its precursor NOx molecules into the free troposphere where ozone's lifetime is longer. We contrast the contribution to tropospheric ozone burden with that of the contribution to the global surface ozone. We simulate a smaller relative contribution from tropical regions to the global mean surface ozone compared to their contribution to the tropospheric ozone burden. The global population-weighted mean ozone (related to ozone exposure) is much larger compared to surface mean, mainly due to large anthropogenic emissions from densely populated regions: East Asia, South Asia, and other tropical regions, and a substantial contribution from international ship NOx emissions. Cereal grains are widely used as staple foods, therefore ensuring a steady supply of food globally requires cereal production, and South Asia contributes significantly to this endeavor. However, the global food system is thought to be responsible for around one-fourth of all greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, with grain production being a major contributor to this system. With the increasing need for food, especially cereal grains, it is difficult to reduce GHG emissions from food production on limited land. However, the cereal production - land use - agricultural GHG emissions nexus has been disregarded in earlier studies which needs to be identified for the sustainable food production system. Therefore, this research aims to assess the interactions between agricultural GHG emissions, food production index, and land usage on cereal production in South Asia. This study employs the Fully Modified Ordinary Least Square (FMOLS) model as a baseline model for a panel data set of 1990–2020 and further checks the validity via Dynamic Ordinary Least Square (DOLS) and robust least square procedure to tackle the endogeneity, serial correlation, and outlier issues. Findings confirm that growing the food production index and land usage boosts cereal grain production in South Asia, whereas rising agricultural CO 2 emissions lessen output in the long run. In this paper, we also deploy Dumitrescu and Hurlin's (2012) panel causality test to prove a dual causal connection between the food production index, land use, and cereal food production. From a policy perspective, the findings indicate the necessity of integrating green agro-technology into land cultivation practices in order to achieve increased grain production and mitigate GHG emissions originating from the agricultural sector. Gridded bottom-up inventories of CO 2 emissions are needed in global CO 2 inversion schemes as priors to initialize transport models and as a complement to top-down estimates to identify the anthropogenic sources. Global inversions require gridded datasets almost in near-real time that are spatially and methodologically consistent at a global scale. This may result in a loss of more detailed information that can be assessed by using regional inventories because they are built with a greater level of detail including country-specific information and finer resolution data. With this aim, a global mosaic of regional, gridded CO 2 emission inventories, hereafter referred to as CoCO2-MOSAIC 1.0, has been built in the framework of the CoCO2 project. CoCO2-MOSAIC 1.0 provides gridded (0.1 ∘ × 0.1 ∘) monthly emissions fluxes of CO 2 fossil fuel (CO 2 ff, long cycle) and CO 2 biofuel (CO 2 bf, short cycle) for the years 2015–2018 disaggregated in seven sectors. The regional inventories integrated are CAMS-REG-GHG 5.1 (Europe), DACCIWA 2.0 (Africa), GEAA-AEI 3.0 (Argentina), INEMA 1.0 (Chile), REAS 3.2.1 (East, Southeast, and South Asia), and VULCAN 3.0 (USA). EDGAR 6.0, CAMS-GLOB-SHIP 3.1 and CAMS-GLOB-TEMPO 3.1 are used for gap-filling. CoCO2-MOSAIC 1.0 can be recommended as a global baseline emission inventory for 2015 which is regionally accepted as a reference, and as such we use the mosaic to inter-compare the most widely used global emission inventories: CAMS-GLOB-ANT 5.3, EDGAR 6.0, ODIAC v2020b, and CEDS v2020_04_24. CoCO2-MOSAIC 1.0 has the highest CO 2 ff (36.7 Gt) and CO 2 bf (5.9 Gt) emissions globally, particularly in the USA and Africa. Regional emissions generally have a higher seasonality representing better the local monthly profiles and are generally distributed over a higher number of pixels, due to the more detailed information available. All super-emitting pixels from regional inventories contain a power station (CoCO2 database), whereas several super-emitters from global inventories are likely incorrectly geolocated, which is likely because regional inventories provide large energy emitters as point sources including regional information on power plant locations. The 2030 United Nations Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 13 agenda hinges on attaining a sustainable environment with the need to "take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts". Hence, this study empirically revisits the debate on the effect of nonrenewable energy and globalization on carbon emissions within the framework of the Kuznets hypothesis using an unbalanced panel data from seven South Asian countries (Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka) covering 1980–2019. The variables of interest are carbon emissions measured in metric tons per capita, energy use measured as kg of oil equivalent per capita, and globalization index. To address five main objectives, we deploy four techniques: panel-corrected standard errors (PCSE), feasible generalized least squares (FGLS), quantile regression (QR), and fully modified ordinary least squares (FMOLS). For the most part, the findings reveal that the (1) inverted U-shaped energy-Kuznets curve holds; (2) U-shaped globalization-Kuznets curve is evident; (3) inverted U-shaped turning points for nonrenewable energy are 496.03 and 640.84, while for globalization are 38.83 and 39.04, respectively; (4) globalization-emission relationship indicates a U-shaped relationship at the median and 75th quantile; and (5) inverted U-shaped energy-Kuznets holds in Pakistan but a U-shaped nexus prevails in Nepal and Sri Lanka; inverted U-shaped globalization-Kuznets holds in Bangladesh and Sri Lanka, but U-shaped nexus is evident in Bhutan, Maldives, and Nepal. Deductively, our results show that South Asia countries (at early stage of development) are faced with the hazardous substance that deteriorates human health. Moreover, the non-linear square term of the nonrenewable energy-emissions relationship is negative, which validates the inverted U-shaped EKC theory. Overall, the effect of energy and globalization on carbon emissions is opposite while the consistency at the 75th quantile result indicates that countries with intense globalization are prone to environmental degradation. It is critical to understand the elements that influence CO2 emissions from commuting to establish low-carbon transportation and land-use regulations. Research attempted to determine the mechanisms by which the built environment (BE) influences commuting-related CO2 emissions. Most research was conducted in developed nations and used traditional modeling to evaluate the relationship between BE and CO2 emissions primarily considering direct consequences related with BE. There is a research vacuum in predicting the total impacts of BE on CO2 emissions from commuting, taking into account the mediating effect of car ownership. This research examines total effects of the built environment (BE) on commuting-related CO2 emissions including both direct and indirect effects. We used 10,592 home-based work trips from Dhaka, a developing city, to create a structural equation model (SEM) for predicting this association. We included car ownership as a mediating variable and treated BE, car ownership, and CO2 emissions as endogenous variables. Both population density and land-use diversity are positively associated with private car ownership. The study shows the built environment plays a different role in explaining CO2 emissions from commuting in developed and developing countries. Population density has a direct positive impact on CO2 emissions, as evidenced by previous research in a developing metropolis. Because of its mediating effect on car ownership, land use diversity has a considerable positive indirect impact on emissions but a negligible overall effect, making it ineffective on its own and necessitating the implementation of complementing Travel Demand Management (TDM) policies. Our modeling results are comparable with those from both developing and developed countries in terms of public transportation accessibility, job accessibility, and road network design. The results might be used to produce policy guidelines to reduce car ownership and CO2 emissions, which would help developing countries in South Asia meet their sustainable development goals. Energy efficiency is widely regarded as the most efficient means of supplying additional energy to meet the rising demand. However, extensive energy consumption causes greenhouse emissions, environmental destruction, and a decrease in energy efficiency (EE). This study investigates the role of energy efficiency and productivity growth in the ecological improvement of South Asia. Moreover, it evaluates the determinants (efficiency change or technology change) of energy productivity change across different SA (South Asian) countries. To estimate the energy efficiency and productivity change, we employed SBM-DEA and Malmquist Productivity Index methods with three inputs (capital stock, labor, and energy consumption), a single desirable output (gross domestic product) and a single undesirable output (CO2 emissions) on the well-extended dataset (2001–2019) for 6 South Asian countries. Furthermore, to check the impact of energy policy (2010) over the study period, the statistical significance of the change in mean scores for energy efficiency and productivity over two time periods (2001–2010 and 2011–2019) and six countries was examined using the Mann–Whitney U and Kruskal–Wallis tests. Results reveal that the average EE score of all 6 SA countries for the study period is 0.7278. This score shows that SA countries still have the potential of 27.22% to improve their energy efficiency to minimize the inputs to get the optimum output level with the least emissions. The primary determinant of energy productivity growth is technological change instead of efficiency. The average energy efficiency level is significantly different for two time periods, 2001–2010 and 2011–2019. Results conclude that energy efficiency and productivity in SA declined over the period, and potential causes are an inefficiency in the energy conversion process, extensive utilization of inputs, and less output growth. This study attempts to explore the environmental impacts of globalization under the umbrella of the EKC (environment Kuznets curve) approach in South Asia. For this reason, this study investigates the causality between energy usage and growth-driven CO2 emanations. The study adopts the FMOLS (fully modified OLS) technique for the econometric assessment, which portrays a significant demolish of environmental well-being in the region, whereas individual country, such as Nepal, also demonstrates a positive and significant effect of non-environmentally friendly power and globalization index on CO2 emanations. This study analyzes the causal connection between financial inclusion and carbon emission in selected South Asian countries through a quantile technique–based linear Granger and non-parametric causality test. The analysis of the study covers quarterly data from 1980 Q1 to 2019 Q4. However, the linear Granger causality assessment outcome does not indicate any causal relationship between financial inclusion and carbon emission. In contrast, results from non-parametric assessment reveal a non-linear connection between the variables. The non-parametric test results of the South Asian countries exhibit that financial inclusion leads to carbon emission, which instigates the deterioration of the environment, except for Bhutan. Subsequently, creating awareness by promoting renewable energy resources is essential while investing in fuel-efficient technology to reduce the dependence on fossil fuels. The results of this study provide significant information to the governments and policymakers in emerging countries to improve financial literacy among people to reduce the risk of global warming by encouraging investment in energy-efficient resources. Modernization refers to the general process of progress within human societies. As a result of carbon dioxide emissions, global warming poses a significant threat to human sustainability. Therefore, the scientific community must thoroughly research the impact of modernization on CO2 emissions. Surprisingly, just a few pieces of research have previously examined this subject. Asian economies are regarded as laggards in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), with environmental degradation being one of the key issues confronting these countries. This study used panel data regression to investigate the association between sectoral modernization and CO2 emissions in South Asia. None of the existing studies has observed the sectoral modernization and CO2 emission nexus in the region of South Asia. Therefore, this study bridges the research gap in the current literature. This study found that social sector transformation, energy sector, and services sector modernization have negative associations with CO2 emissions in South Asia. However, both the agricultural sector and industrial sector modernization are positively associated with CO2 emissions in South Asia. The empirical results from several models suggest that sectorial modernization has a significant and strong association with environmental sustainability. Access to a green and eco-friendly economy can increase modernization among different sectors of the economy to produce pro-environment products and society. In the recent decade, the investigation of environmental degradation and its drivers has become a burning subject of dispute among the governments and their policymakers. However, various crucial drivers of environmental damages still have not been sufficiently analyzed in the existing literature. Considering this view, the current study investigates the impact of agricultural value‐added, economic growth, non‐renewable energy, renewable energy, and tourism on carbon dioxide emission (CO2) from 1995 to 2017 in South Asian countries. The results found that agricultural value‐added, economic growth, non‐renewable energy, and tourism sector development significantly increase the environmental degradation, depicting that these factors have a harmful contribution to the environmental quality. However, renewable energy consumption has some ability to improve the environmental quality in this region. Additionally, the results of the Dumitrescu and Hurlin casualty test confirm the feedback hypothesis between economic growth and carbon emissions. However, a conservation hypothesis exists between carbon emission, and agriculture and finally, the growth hypothesis is valid between tourism and carbon emissions. Consistent with these empirical findings, this article suggests some vital policy implications for South Asian countries to accomplish their sustainable development goals (SDGs). This study makes significant incursion into the tourism literature by investigating whether per capita (PC) income moderates the impact of carbon dioxide emissions on tourism development in South Asia. With an unbalanced panel data on six South Asian countries from 1995 to 2019, the study engages a battery of analytical techniques which includes the Prais–Winsten panel-corrected standard error to probe the discourse. Findings reveal, inter alia, that at the 1% level, (1) carbon emission is a significant and negative predictor of tourism, (2) the impact of emission on tourism differs significantly across South Asia, (3) economic growth is a significant and positive predictor of tourism, (4) the impact of growth on tourism differs significantly across South Asia and (5) growth reduces the devastating impact of emissions. Country results are mixed. Specifically, emissions reduce tourism in Bangladesh, India and Sri Lanka but boosts tourism in Nepal and Pakistan. Conversely, economic growth increases tourism and reduces the devastating impact of emissions in Bangladesh, Bhutan and Sri Lanka, whereas it reduces tourism and increases the devastating impact of emissions in Nepal and Pakistan. Although the study submits that growth is a critical driver of tourism in South Asia, the moderating impact of growth is not sufficient to attenuate the total negative impact of carbon emissions. In addition, the lack of consistency of the results across the selected countries suggests that PC income and carbon emissions levels are greatly dispersed. This study explores the dynamic linkages of financial inclusion, modernization, and environmental sustainability in South Asia during the period 1998–2019. Two distinct composite indexes for financial inclusion and modernization are developed by using principal component analysis (PCA) based on normalized indicators. To examine the dynamic linkages, we adopted panel regression models that are not only robust but also heteroskedasticity consistent. We find that financial inclusion, modernization, per capita GDP, and FDI appear to lead to higher CO2 emissions in the South Asian region. Meanwhile, increased economic integration and trade openness appear to have negative dynamics for carbon emissions. These empirical findings are unbiased and robust to different reasonable modifications to panel data model specifications. This study comes up with the conclusion that presently there is no policy coherence and coordination between growing financial inclusion, modernization, and carbon mitigation strategies in South Asia. Thus, the prospect of financial inclusion and modernization should be cohesive into comprehensive climate change mitigation strategies at regional, national, and global levels, specifically to mitigate the adverse dynamics of higher carbon emissions associated with modern development. Climate change resulting from the higher concentration of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere is a threat to the sustainability of life on earth. To ensure sustainable development, the study analyzed the impact of financial development, globalization, and energy use on the environmental quality of South Asian economies over the period 1990–2014. To account for cross-sectional dependence, Breusch-Pagan-Lagrange multiplier, Pesaran-scaled Lagrange multiplier, bias-corrected-scaled Lagrange multiplier, and Pesaran cross-sectional dependence tests are used. The second-generation tests are used to determine the stationarity level of the variables. Furthermore, the Westerlund panel cointegration test confirms cointegration among the variables. For long-run association, fully modified ordinary least squares, dynamic ordinary least squares, and pooled mean group estimators are used. The results suggest that financial development contributes to carbon emissions, whereas globalization has the potential to control emissions. The study also used Dumitrescu and Hurlin's (2012) panel causality test to explore the causal relationship among the variables. Unidirectional causality is observed from economic growth, globalization, and financial development to environmental degradation and from emissions to energy use, respectively. As financial development deteriorates environmental quality, therefore, the government should monitor the disbursement of loans for research and development, green financing, and efficient production that reduce resource consumption and improves environmental quality. Financial development should not compromise environmental quality and endanger sustainability. Furthermore, South Asian countries should promote globalization to support the inflow of green technologies to enhance environmental quality. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
