Nowadays, nanocellulose production processes with numerous merits of green, eco-friendly, and cost-effective are in urgent need. Acidic deep eutectic solvent (ADES), as an emerging green solvent, has been widely applied in the preparation of nanocellulose over the past few years, owing to its unique advantages, including non-toxicity, low cost, easy synthesis, recyclability, and biodegradability. At present, several studies have explored the effectiveness of ADESs in nanocellulose production, particularly those based on choline chloride (ChCl) and carboxylic acids. Various acidic deep eutectic solvents have been employed, with representative ones such as ChCl-oxalic/lactic/formic/acetic/citric/maleic/levulinic/tartaric acid. Herein, we comprehensively reviewed the latest progress of these ADESs, focusing on the treatment procedures and key superiorities. In addition, the challenges and outlooks of ChCl/carboxylic acids-based DESs implementation in the fabrication of nanocellulose were discussed. The oxidative decarboxylation of levulinic acid (LA) by silver(I)/persulfate [Ag(I)/S₂O₈²⁻] has been investigated in this paper. The effects of buffer solution, initial pH value, time and temperature and dosages of Ag(I)/S₂O₈²⁻ on the decarboxylation of LA were examined in batch experiments and a reaction scheme was proposed on basis of the reaction process. The experimental results showed that a solution of NaOH-KH₂PO₄ was comparatively suitable for the LA decarboxylation reaction by silver(I)/persulfate. Under optimum conditions (temperature 160 °C, pH 5.0, and time 0.5 h), the rate of LA conversion in NaOH-KH₂PO₄ solutions with an initial concentration of 0.01 mol LA reached 70.2%, 2-butanone (methyl ethyl ketone) was the single product in the gas phase and the resulted molar yield reached 44.2%.

A series of novel water-soluble hemicellulosic derivatives, containing carbamoylethyl and carboxyethyl groups, were heterogeneously synthesized from wheat-straw hemicelluloses with acrylamide (AA) under alkaline conditions. The factors such as reaction temperature, reaction time, molar ratio of catalysis to xylose unit in hemicelluloses and molar ratio of acrylamide to xylose unit in hemicelluloses, were investigated. The average degree of substitution (DS) was calculated by (1)H NMR spectroscopy. DS values up to 0.23 in a one-step synthesis of hemicelluloses derivatives were obtained. Under optimum conditions (60°C, NaOH to xylose unit in hemicelluloses molar ratio of 0.8, AA to xylose unit in hemicelluloses molar ratio of 8.0, reaction time of 1h) an expected ratio of carbamoylethyl group to carboxyethyl group of 4.8 in the hemicellulosic derivatives was obtained. The structural features of the hemicellulosic derivatives were characterized by FTIR, NMR spectroscopy, and by elemental analysis. The current work provides a facile method for the synthesis of hemicellulose derivatives with bifunctional groups, which could be used as wet-end additives in the papermaking industry.
