Background: research in care home settings is often negatively focused, portraying life as sterile and devoid of meaningful experiences. Care homes have the potential to influence people's lives socially, physically and psychologically. It is important to understand what factors contribute to this.Objective: to conduct a systematic qualitative review of care home life and provide practical recommendations to enhance residents' quality of life.Methods: the following databases were searched: PsycINFO, Medline, Web of Science, EMBASE, Allied and Complementary Medicine Database and Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature. References from appropriate journals and individual articles were checked. Papers that fitted our selection criteria were selected. Two independent reviewers assessed methodological study quality. Thematic analysis and meta-ethnographic methods were adapted to synthesise findings.Results: thirty-one studies were identified. People in care homes voiced concerns about lack of autonomy and difficulty in forming appropriate relationships with others. Four key themes were identified: (i) acceptance and adaptation, (ii) connectedness with others, (iii) a homelike environment, (iv) caring practices.Conclusion: positive experiences in care homes can occur and are important for residents' quality of life. The review supports literature highlighting the need for relationship-centred approaches to care and emphasises the importance of understanding the resident's attitude towards living in care homes. Aims and objectives To compare the respective views of nursing students and registered nurses on caring behaviours. Background Research has indicated that nursing includes not only technical skills and professional knowledge but also the expression of care. In addition to nursing care, nurses demonstrate the acts of supporting, negotiating, reinforcing and transforming. However, little research simultaneously investigates the caring behaviours of nursing students and registered nurses. Design A cross-sectional study was conducted. Methods A total of 657 subjects participated in this study. The research tool was a self-administered structured questionnaire. Data were analysed using descriptive statistics, one-way analysis of variance, t-test and chi-square test. Results The results showed that the most important caring behaviour is 'knowing the patient', while the least is 'advocating for the patient', which includes caring behaviours to respect the patient's and family's best interests, and voicing for them, possibly because this behaviour is more difficult for nurses to practice in the Taiwanese culture. Moreover, there was no significant difference in the caring behaviours between nursing students and registered nurses. However, age was found to be a significant difference in the caring behaviours of nursing students and registered nurses. Conclusion Caring behaviour is essential in clinical practice. Based on the results, this study suggested that role models should be provided to nursing students to develop proper caring behaviours. Nursing faculty can boost nursing students' interests in learning caring behaviours by incorporating diverse teaching strategies to enhance the effectiveness of caring behaviours. Relevance to clinical practice Much attention should be focused on education about awareness of caring behaviour for both nursing students and nursing staff. This study addressed that nursing administrators and faculty members should emphasise the importance of the essence of caring. This study was designed to investigate the transformation in attitude of social work under-graduate students following the completion of a human rights module near the end of their academic programme in Taiwan. Twenty-five students who enrolled in the 'Human Rights, Gender and Social Work' module at a university in central Taiwan were evaluated by means of self-reported change in attitude towards human rights before and after participation in this semester-long module. Their attitude towards human rights was measured using a twenty-four-item, four-point Likert scale that was developed and previously validated by Xie and Dan (2003). Quantitative analysis was applied. Following an educational intervention of one semester's duration, the participants self-reported a statistically significant change in their attitude towards human rights. The linkage of human rights with social work practice can be facilitated by adopting a specific teaching methodology. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background Until now, caring research has focused on constructs, processes and outcomes of caring traits exhibited mainly by nurses or nursing students in hospitals. Few studies have considered the perspectives of elderly residents of long-term care facilities ( LTCFs). Aims The aim of this study was to elucidate the nature of caring by describing the experience of elderly residents of Taiwan LTCFs. Methods Data collected by semi-structured interviews with 12 elderly residents of LTCFs were analysed by content analysis. Results The caring perceived by the sample was thematically categorized as calming the body, respectful communication and enriching life. Conclusion The findings of this study confirm the need for managers of LTCFs to address the physical and psychosocial needs of their residents. The findings can be used to develop education programmes and clinical protocols for nurses in the caring field and to develop instruments for measuring perceived caring in LTCFs. A reliable and valid instrument for understanding patients' perceptions of nurses' caring behaviour as well as assessing the quality of nursing care is necessary. The purpose of this study was to assess the reliability and validity of a Chinese version of the Caring Assessment Report Evaluation Q-sort ( CARE- Q) Scale for the measurement of patients' perceptions of nurses' caring behaviours. The study sample comprised 250 patients from a medical centre in central Taiwan. Content validity, construct validity, internal consistency and stability reliability were assessed. The Content Validity Index of the Chinese version of CARE- Q was 0.90. Cronbach's alpha indicated good internal consistency reliability. Stability reliabilities for the six subscales ranged from 0.83 to 0.92. The results reveal that the Chinese version of the CARE- Q scale for the measurement of patients' perceptions on nurses' caring behaviours indicates high reliability (internal consistency and stability) and good content validity. The article offers information on a study conducted by the authors related to social evolution in Taiwan in which changing pattern of care given by grandparents to their grandchildren was treated as an indicator. It mentions that logistic regression was performed to know how significantly elders' grandchild-care behavior was related to their individual characteristics. It highlights that elders providing grandchild care increased to 19.4 percent in 2007.
