Media-associated disorders in childhood and adolescence: Evidence paper of the joint addiction commision of the German societies and professional associations of child and adolescent psychiatry and psychotherapy Abstract. Media-associated disorders (MAD) describe the problematic use of the internet, certain electronic devices in general as well as digital applications. During childhood and adolescence, digital games and social media are the most commonly used applications. In May 2019, as first MAD "gaming disorder" was included as a clinical diagnosis in the ICD-11. The prevalence of MAD in German children and adolescents is estimated to lie between 3 % and 5 %. In most cases, MAD are accompanied by psychiatric comorbidities. MAD ensue because of dysfunctional learning processes in combination with general and specific risk factors. They are associated with neural changes like those of substance-associated addictions. Diagnostics can be based on validated questionnaires and clinical exploration, though a standardized diagnostic path is not yet common. Treatment depends on the level of severity and generally comprises outpatient, day-clinic, and inpatient therapy approaches with elements from cognitive-behavioral therapy and under parental involvement. Suitable treatments are not yet available in all German regions and have also not been sufficiently evaluated. Moreover, only a few studies exist on the efficacy of prevention measures addressing MAD in children and adolescents. Thus, further research is strongly required.

Stakeholders' experiences with flexible and integrative treatment models in German child and adolescent psychiatry according to § 64b SGB V - A qualitative study Abstract. Since 2013, new possibilities for flexible and integrative forms of treatment (FIT) exist within the German mental healthcare system. These FIT models, created according to § 64b of the Social Security Code V, have been implemented in adult as well as child and adolescent psychiatry over the past years. This paper investigates stakeholders' experiences with these innovative FIT models. Background and Aims: Since 2013, new possibilities for flexible and integrative forms of treatment (FIT) exist within the German mental healthcare system. These FIT models, created according to § 64b of the Social Security Code V, have been implemented in adult as well as child and adolescent psychiatry over the past years. This paper investigates stakeholders' experiences with these innovative FIT models. Methods: Focus groups were conducted in two hospital departments that had implemented a FIT model according to § 64b. In total, 36 participants were included, comprising employees, patients, and their caretakers. We also conducted a thematic analysis. Results: According to all stakeholders, these forms of acute outpatient treatment form a core component of FIT models that may serve to prepare, replace, or follow-up on inpatient treatment. In addition, the flexibility of treatment and increased continuity of care were mentioned as benefits of FIT models according to § 64b. Third, these FIT models allow for a better integration of caretakers in the treatment of their kin, which also produces various challenges for this stakeholder group. Conclusions: The introduction of FIT models in German child and adolescent psychiatry has complex implications for the treatment process and the experiences of all stakeholders. They perceive it as a needs-adapted extension of current forms of psychiatric support.

Background: The current literature lacks scientific research on child and adolescent psychiatrists' (CAPPS) perspectives on dental and oral health. This study aims to investigate the opinions and approaches of child and adolescent psychiatrists and their patients regarding oral and dental health. Methods: A questionnaire-based cross-sectional study was conducted among members of the Professional Association for Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, Psychosomatics and Psychotherapy in Germany. Results: Out of the association members, 10.9% (n = 109) participated, with 5.2% (n = 52; 38f/14m) completing the questionnaire. Dental and oral health topics were discussed with one-fifth of the patients (19.2%), while 11.5% reported that they were "never" a part of their therapy. Patient-related concerns about dental and oral health were primarily brought into the context of child and adolescent psychiatric work. Dental treatment anxieties were prominent. Only 3.8% of the participants regularly assigned diagnoses related to dental status. The CAPPS employ a bio-psycho-social model for the genesis of oral health-related conditions in Children and Adolescents with Special Needs. Conclusions: CAPPS have a foundation in relationship-based work for assessing oral and dental healthcare and providing recommendations for further dental care. «Euthanasia» was the cynical euphemism used by the Nazis to refer to the systematic murder of hundreds of thousands of mentally sick and handicapped people between 1939 and 1945, at least 6,000 of whom were children. Based on the example of Günter Nevermann, this paper provides insight into the complex acts of registering, selecting, and targeting children labelled as "inferior" and "unworthy to live." This case clearly shows that Nazi doctors were not necessarily enmeshed in some tragic conflict. Rather, apparently without any qualms, they sacrificed the sick children who had been entrusted to their care, for the ideal of obtaining a "racially healthy corpus," a term used without being questioned. Most of the perpetrators were never brought to justice, and not a few of them later held managerial positions in child and adolescent psychiatry in the two German states. Many of them were members or even honorary members of the "Deutsche Gesellschaft für Kinder- und Jugendpsychiatrie, Psychosomatik und Psychotherapie e. V." in its present or previous form. We feel it is necessary to inform the public effectively about this state of affairs, to discover what really happened and to determine who was responsible.

Mental health problems in early childhood are common, but there is a lack of psychiatric research on this age group. DC:0-5 is a multiaxial classification system for mental disorders in early childhood, providing a framework for standardizing clinical practice and research. However, research on the validity of DC:0-5 is scarce. The Developmental Psychiatry Diagnostic Challenges Study (DePsy) is a multi-site, prospective clinical study including six German early childhood mental health (ECMH) clinics. The main objective of the study is to contribute to the validation of Axis I and Axis II of DC:0-5. A second aim of the study is to describe the population of the participating clinics regarding diagnoses, family context, and treatment outcomes. Additionally, the impact of environmental risk factors, including parental Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) and media use, on child psychopathology and caregiver–child relationships will be examined. Over two years, patients aged 0.0–5.9 years old will be enrolled in the study. Assessments include ICD-10 and DC:0-5 diagnoses, developmental tests, video-based observations of caregiver—child interactions, and questionnaires on child psychopathology, media use, parental stress, and treatment satisfaction. New legislation in the financing of psychiatric hospitals in Germany stipulates the introduction of a new reimbursement system for psychiatric child and adolescent psychiatric and psychosomatic hospitals in Germany by 2013. In several steps norms are to be empirically defined and services to be documented, and the current per diem system of hospital charges has to be replaced by a more specific system reflecting differences in the level of distinct patient groups. This discussion paper gives an overview of the legal framework as well as the risks and chances of the new system. An increased effort in documentation will be one of the clear consequences of the new system («much ado» ...). Psychiatric inpatient treatment will be much more transparent in detail, though it is not yet clear whether there will be a real improvement for patients (... «about nothing»). The new system also offers the chance to introduce modern treatment concepts like home treatment. Such chances for innovation should be implemented to the benefit of patients.

Background: Since prevalence rates of mental health problems in children and adolescents are high and of considerable relevance to public health, determinants of mental health, such as risk and protective factors, are of special interest., Objectives: The present paper reports the frequencies and distributions of potential risk and protective factors and analyses their effects on children's mental health., Methods: The BELLA study is the mental health module of the German National Health Interview and Examination Survey among Children and Adolescents (KiGGS). Mental health problems and their assumed determinants are examined in a representative sub-sample of 2,863 families with children and adolescents aged 7-17. In order to identify mental health problems, the extended version of the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire was administered. Data on psychosocial risk factors as well as on protective factors in terms of personal, familial and social resources were collected by questioning the parents and, from the age of 11 years upwards, the children themselves., Results: Adverse family climate stands out particularly as a negative contributor to children's mental health. When several risk factors occur simultaneously, the prevalence of mental health problems increases markedly. Conversely, pronounced individual, family and social resources coincide with a reduced occurrence of mental health problems, especially in children with a limited number of risk factors., Conclusions: The results suggest that differential prevention strategies are needed depending on the risk level: in the low risk group, to which most children belong, effective prevention programmes should define strengthening resources as a key objective. In the smaller group of children with a high number of risk factors, more complex intervention designs are required, which must consider the reduction of risks as well as strengthening resources.

During National Socialism, the politically motivated interest in psychiatric genetic research lead to the founding of research departments specialized in pathological-anatomical brain research, the two Kaiser Wilhelm-Institutes (KWI) in Berlin and Munich. The latter was indirectly provided with brain material by Bavarian State Hospitals, to three of which "Kinderfachabteilungen" (Special Pediatric Units) were affiliated. As children became victims of the systematically conducted child "euthanasia" in these Special Pediatric Units, this paper will address the question whether and to which extent the organs from victims of child "euthanasia" were used for (neuro-) pathological research at the KWI in Munich. By means of case studies and medical histories (with focus on the situation in Kaufbeuren-Irsee), I will argue that pediatric departments on a regular base delivered slide preparations, that the child "euthanasia" conduced in these departments systematically contributed to neuropathological research and that slide preparations from victims of child "euthanasia" were used in scientific publications after 1945.

During the period of national socialism in Loben/Lublinitz (Silesia) existed a children's special department, where many disabled and mentally retarded children were killed. This was happened under participation of the physician Elisabeth Hecker, who was one of the pioneer's of child and adolescent psychiatry in Germany. During the Second World War she was director of the Loben's clinic for adolescent psychiatry--one of the first of its sort and situated directly in the neighbourhood of the children's special department. Hecker announced children with negative ratings to the "Reich Committee for the Scientific Registration of Severe Genetically and Constitutionally Determined Diseases" in Berlin and transferred them to the children's special department in Loben. In 1979 the German Association of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry appointed Hecker as a honorary member for her commitment after the war. This honorary membership has been discussed critically because of her activities during the period of national socialism. The following paper analyses Hecker's involvement to the child "euthanasia" program based on unnoticed archival sources.

Focus of this paper is a description of "child euthanasia" during National Socialism 1939-1945 in the "specialized children's department" of the Ansbach state hospital. The historical and ideological bases for euthanasia and the development of child and adolescent psychiatry are explained. Material was found in public archives and trial records of German courts. 156 case histories of children who were killed in the Ansbach state hospital were evaluated. Child euthanasia in Ansbach was done in the same stereotyped way as in other specialized children's departments. The 156 children were aged between one week and 16 years. 39 children died within the first three months, 31 children died within three to six months in hospital. Most children were autopsied, at least 86 brains were examined neuropathologically. The trials against the involved physicians were quashed finally in 1968.

In the representative studies published so far on the outcome of analytic child psychotherapy (Dührssen 1964; Fonagy and Target 1996) no techniques of treatment were mentioned. The following paper describes in detail the technique of treatment on which the Heidelberg Study "On the Therapeutic Outcome in Child and Adolescent Psychotherapy" is based, as it developed from 1975 to 1993 at the Heidelberg Institute for Child and Adolescent Psychotherapy. Starting from Piaget's findings that the cognitive faculties of a child up to the age of 11 completely differ from those of an adult and taking into consideration the cerebral information processing and "the intellect pervadet sensory" (Schopenhauer) it is demonstrated that children take their intrapsychic and interpersonal conflicts into analytic play therapy or into role play on analogous levels. Protected by a safe distance from being aware of their conflicts they will on the analogous levels understand, work through, partially solve their conflicts and make use of it in reality without conscious recognition. The term "analogous level" is defined and the manifold possibilities of therapeutic intervention on this level are demonstrated. The efficacy of therapeutic treatment on analogous levels is discussed.

Papers by Harms [3] and Thieme [19] acknowledge Kahlbaum as a pioneer in the field of children and adolescent psychiatry as well as the work in his asylum in Görlitz, whereas Katzenstein [8] analyses his contribution to the development of psychiatry as theory. The present article is meant as a supplement to these. It is devoted to Kahlbaum's life before he became accepted as a therapist as well as scientist. As a result, first of all by having investigated his student time in Leipzig, it can prove conjectures that Kahlbaum became interested in psychiatric issues rather late. Furthermore the paper reconstructs the discussion lead around his most well-known scientific work, his nosology of 1863, and substantiates the fact that its author experienced appreciation in this particular field only decades later.

• Perceptions differed between frontline workers in child welfare and child and adolescent psychiatric (CAP) clinics. • Child welfare professionals perceived the general interprofessional collaboration significantly less positively. • CAP clinics perceived the collaboration on cases involving children with complex care needs significantly less positively. • Attention should be given to organizational support in child welfare for building collaborative relationships with CAP. In Germany (and other countries) a significant proportion of children and young people in contact with the child welfare system do not receive adequate mental health care. Fragmented service delivery has been partially attributed to a lack of interprofessional collaboration between the child welfare system and providers of child mental health services. Child and adolescent psychiatric (CAP) clinics provide the majority of child mental health care for the child welfare population in Germany. In this paper, we present the first wave of data collected in a nonrandomized pretest–posttest intervention study, in which we examined the collaboration between child welfare services and CAP clinics in Northern Germany with a sample of N = 204 professionals in total, from both organizations. We used two standardized measurements. The general quality of collaboration was measured using an established tool, the "Perceptions of Interprofessional Collaboration Model – Questionnaire" (PINCOM-Q). Perceptions of collaboration around children with complex care needs were measured with a newly developed scale, the "Perceptions of Interprofessional Collaboration Scale for Children with Multiple and Complex Needs" (PICOCC). The results show that perceptions of interprofessional collaboration differed based on organizational and professional affiliation. Frontline workers employed in the child welfare system compared to those working in CAP clinics had a more negative perception of collaboration in general, and felt their organization provided less support for collaboration. Social workers in both CAP and child welfare services perceived less organizational support for collaboration compared to mental health professionals. In the overall group of social workers, those working in the child welfare system felt their organization supported collaboration the least. Mental health professionals working in CAP clinics, however, had a more negative perception of collaboration around children with complex needs. This suggests that attention should be paid to perceptions of interprofessional collaboration as an important process variable, which may impact on frontline workers' responsiveness to organizational change. Previous international literature describes a lack of systematic research about cross-institutional cooperation in social and health services although the need is indicated. More and more children and adolescents have complex psychosocial needs. Thus, they require help from different institutions and professions to receive optimal care. However, there is a great need of improvement of the cooperation between institutions in social (e.g. Youth Welfare Office) and health services (e.g. Child and Adolescent Psychiatry (CAP), even in Germany. Therefore, an official Agreement of Cooperation (AoC) between these institutions was implemented as a first attempt to enhance and structure cross-institutional work in Dresden, Germany. This methodological paper describes the corresponding evaluation project that includes cross-sectional and longitudinal assessments. It thereby focuses on the employees' and families' satisfaction as well as the psychosocial development and mental health of children at the intersection of the aforementioned institutions before and after the implementation of the AoC. Background: In Germany, 19.1% of boys and 14.5% of girls are affected by mental health problems (MHP). Paediatricians are usually the first in line to be contacted but they often do not feel adequately trained to diagnose and treat MHP in primary care. A major statutory health insurance fund introduced a health coaching (HC) programme to strengthen primary care consultation for MHP. The HC includes a training concept for paediatricians, standardised guidelines for actions and additional payments. The aim of this study was to investigate the potential effects of the HC programme on the change of MHP in children and adolescents. Methods: A prospective cohort study was conducted in Bavaria, Germany, in 2018 and 2019. Data were collected at 2 points 1 year apart using an online questionnaire. Parents of patients with developmental disorder of speech and language, head/abdominal pain, conduct disorder or non-organic enuresis were approached by their health insurance. Families treated according to the HC programme form the intervention group while all others serve as controls. MHP was assessed using the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ) as a child self-assessment (SDQ-S)/or external assessment by parents (SDQ-P). Determinants of SDQ total score were analysed using linear mixed effects models. Results: Cross-sectional (n = 1090) and longitudinal analyses (n = 599) were performed. At baseline, a total of 23.5% had an SDQ total score "at risk" (SDQ-S > 15/SDQ-P > 13). There were no significant differences between intervention and controls. After full adjustment for all potential confounders, higher SDQ scores indicating more problems were significantly associated with male sex (2.000, p < 0.001) whereas a high parental education level was significantly associated with decreased SDQ scores (-2.127, p =0.034). There was a significant improvement in the control group over time (-0.814, p = 0.001) while the SDQ scores in the intervention group remained stable (-0.012, p = 0.020). Conclusion: This evaluation of the HC programme could not prove a clinically relevant intervention's effect on the MHP developmental course. Nevertheless, (HC) paediatricians have crucial potential to improve the care of MHP patients. Targeting families with less access to support measures might help reduce the burden of MHP and be a step towards continuous improvement of care. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: In a meta-analysis of international studies, 17% of admitted patients in psychiatric hospitals had exhibited violent behavior toward others. Reported data from studies in Germany were considerably lower until recent years. However, studies examining only single hospitals, as well as the quality of the data itself, have raised questions as to the validity of these findings. Indeed, a debate currently exists as to whether there has, in fact, been an increase of violent incidents in German mental institutions. Methods: In a group of 10 hospitals serving about half the population of the Federal State of Baden-Wuerttemberg with 11 million inhabitants, the Staff Observation Aggression Scale–Revised (SOAS-R) was introduced into patients' electronic charts as part of routine documentation. Data recording was strongly supported by staff councils and unions. A completed data set is now available for the year 2019. For one hospital, data are available since 2006. Due to some doubts with respect to fully covering self-directed aggression, we restricted the analysis to aggression toward others and toward objects. Results: In 2019, 17,599 aggressive incidents were recorded in 64,367 admissions (1,660 staying forensic psychiatric inpatients included). 5,084 (7.90%) of the admitted cases showed aggressive behavior toward others. Variation between hospitals was low to modest (SD = 1.50). The mean SOAS-R score was 11.8 (SD between hospitals 1.20%). 23% of the incidents resulted in bodily harm. The percentage of patients showing violent behavior was highest among patients with organic disorders (ICD-10 F0) and lowest among patients with addictive or affective disorders (F1, F3, F4). Forensic psychiatry had the highest proportion of cases with aggressive behavior (20.54%), but the number of incidents per bed was lower than in general adult psychiatry and child and adolescent psychiatry (indicating a lower risk for staff). In the hospital with longer-term recordings available, an increase could be observed since 2010, with considerable variation between years. Conclusions: This is the most robust estimate of the frequency of violent incidents in German psychiatric hospitals thus far. The incidence is about half of what has been reported internationally, probably due to sample selection bias in previous studies and a relatively high number of hospital beds in Germany. Background: Mental health problems are highly frequent, as well as being associated with enormous societal and economic costs and significant disability-adjusted life years. Children of parents with a mental illness (COPMI) are at a tremendously increased risk to develop disorders themselves. According to the literature, parental mental disorders launch a wave of risk factors that in turn predict the emergence of psychological problems in the offspring, and effective treatment of the parental disorder has been associated with reduced child psychopathology (launch and grow assumption). Furthermore, studies focusing on parent-child interaction demonstrate generally poorer parenting skills in parents with mental disorders, and the enhancement of such skills has been a significant mediator in improving child outcomes (parenting assumption). Objective: To implement a preventive intervention for COPMI with the aim of interrupting the transmission of mental disorders in children of a parent with mental disorders. An RCT will compare state-of-the-art cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) for a parent with mental disorders to CBT plus the Positive Parenting Program (Triple-P), a well-established and evidence-based program that enhances parenting skills. Methods: A total of 634 patients seeking treatment in 8 outpatient clinics in Germany and their children will be included between January 2018 and April 2021 in the study. We use (clinical) interviews and self- as well as other-report questionnaires to assess the families at four main measurement points [T1: beginning of waiting period for psychotherapy treatment (duration of waiting period depends on usual waiting period in the study center: multiple baselines), T2: begin of parental psychotherapy, T3: post-assessment, T4: 6 months follow-up]. The total observation period will be 39 months. The patients will be randomly assigned to either the control condition (25 to 45 CBT sessions) or the experimental condition (25 to 45 CBT sessions + 10 Triple-P sessions). For evaluating the treatment process, the patients and clinicians will also be assessed after each treatment session. Furthermore, there will be a continuous assessment and report of adverse events during treatment. Discussion: This trial will be the first ever to address the launch and grow as well as the parenting assumption in one study and to establish effects of the two different interventions on children's health. Our study will also likely be the first one to provide data on the comparative cost-effectiveness and will therefore provide essential information relevant for the potential implementation of such programs. The structure of the RCT will allow us to establish effects of the parental disorder(s) with/without comorbidities on children's health, to test assumptions of the trans-generational transmission model of mental disorders and bi-directional influences of different treatments on the model and to analyze specific transmission mechanisms. A deeper understanding of risk mechanisms will reveal specific transmission profiles that will result in the early detection of and effective reduction in risk factors and thus improve the health of the children at risk. Ethics: The study is carried out according to the Good Clinical Practice (GCP) guidelines, the Declaration of Helsinki and its later supplements and local legal requirements. The lead ethics committee at the department of psychology at Philipps-University Marburg approved the study procedure and all study documents. A positive ethics committee vote is required at a study site, before the inclusion of a first patient at the respective site. Dissemination: Via peer-reviewed publications in scientific journals, the results of this study will be made available to the scientific community. Using PsychData all primary data will be made available for re- and meta-analyses. Politicians, public health services, and stakeholders will be informed throughout the study and beyond, thus, improving public policy and health care decisions concerning preventive interventions and treatments for COPMI. Purpose: The Conners Rating Scales are widely used in research and clinical practice for measuring attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and associated problem behaviors, but country-specific norms are seldom collected. The current study presents the standardization of the Swedish Conners 3VR Rating Scales. In addition, we compared the Swedish norms to those collected in the U.S. and Germany. Material and methods: The study included altogether 3496 ratings of children and adolescents aged 6-18 years from population-based samples. Results: The scores obtained for the Swedish Conners 3VR showed satisfactory to excellent internal consistency for most subscales and excellent test-retest reliability. Across-informant correlations were modest. Cross-country comparisons revealed that aggression symptoms rated by teachers and ADHD symptoms rated by parents differed between Sweden, Germany and the U.S. Executive functioning deficits also varied as a function of rater and country, with German and Swedish teachers reporting increasing behavior problems with age, whereas a decrease was observed in the U.S. For some subscales, the observed cross-cultural differences were large enough for a child to be classified as being within the normal range (t-score <60) in one country and within the clinical range (t-score>70) in another country. Conclusion: The present study shows that the Swedish adaptation of the Conners 3VR provides consistent and reproducible scores. However, across-informant ratings were only modest and significant cross-cultural differences in scoring were observed. This emphasizes the need for multi-informant assessment as well as for national norms for rating instruments commonly used within child and adolescent psychiatry research and clinical settings. Objective: To study the prevalence of behavioural and emotional problems and the scope of symptoms in preschool children. The results serve as baseline in a 4-year follow-up study.Method: The sample consisted of 1887 preschool children who started primary level education within 6 months upon data collection. The sample represented the complete 1-year intake of all first year primary school children in a northern German town of 254,000 residents. The data were collected with standardized parent questionnaires.Results: The 6-month prevalence of behavioural and emotional symptoms was 12.4%. The overall score for internalizing symptoms (INT) was significantly higher than the score for externalizing symptoms (EXT). The disturbed children had the highest mean scores on the syndrome scale "Anxious or Depressed".Conclusions: The level of psychopathology in preschool children was already as high as levels seen elsewhere in school children. The predominant role of INT was unexpected, particularly for boys. The attention of child mental health services need to focus on preschool children as on school children and on INT as much as on EXT, especially in boys. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The growth of the therapeutic state in U.S. society has led to a rise in the naming of mental disorders for behaviors previously viewed as diverse or deviant. The current popularity of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and/or attention deficit disorder (ADD) for children (and adults) in the U.S. provides an example of this growth especially when it is compared to Europe, particularly Britain, Germany and France. Furthermore, compared to the U.S., research on hyperkinetic disorder is considerably more diverse, although significantly less in amount. In addition to having more restrictive diagnostic criteria, behaviors considered as attention deficits in the U.S. are typically viewed as problems of conduct in Europe. In this article, they examine the social construction of this mental disorder by examining institutional differences between the U.S. and Europe including the state and the organizational structure of the medical establishment, its political power, and the predominant focus of research in clinical psychology.

Background: The number of immigrants worldwide is growing and migration might be a risk factor for the mental health of children. A reliable instrument is needed to measure immigrants' childrens mental health. The aim of the study was to test the measurement invariance of the parent version of the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ) between German native, Turkish origin and Russian origin immigrant parents in Germany. The SDQ is one of the most frequently used screening instruments for mental health disorders in children. Methods: Differential Item Functioning (DIF) was tested in samples matched by socio-economic status, age and gender of the child. A logistic regression/item response theory hybrid method and a multiple indicators- multiple causes model (MIMIC) was used to test for DIF. Multi Group Confirmatory Factor analysis (MGCFA) was used to test for configural invariance. Parent reports of 10610 German native, 534 Russian origin and 668 Turkish origin parents of children aged 3–17 years were analysed. Results: DIF items were found in both groups and with both methods. We did not find an adequate fit of the original five factor model of the SDQ for the Turkish origin group, but for the Russian origin group. An analysis of functional equivalence indicated that the SDQ is equally useful for the screening of mental health disorders in all three groups. Conclusion: Using the SDQ in order to compare the parent reports of native and immigrant parents should be done cautiously. Thus, the use of the SDQ in epidemiological studies and for prevention planning is questionable. However, the SDQ turns out to be a valid instrument for screening purposes in parents of native and immigrant children. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
