Oasification and desertification are two essential processes of land use and cover (LULC) change in arid regions. Compared to desertification, which is widely regarded as the most severe global ecological issue, the importance of oasification has not received universal recognition. However, neglecting oasification can lead to detrimental outcomes to the effectiveness of ecological governance by affecting the comprehensiveness of environmental policies proposed only based on desertification. Therefore, this study incorporates oasification into the examination of desertification by analyzing land use data for five representative periods spanning from 1980 to 2020, as well as socioeconomic and environmental data from 2000 to 2010. The aim is to evaluate the spatial and temporal dynamics of oasification and desertification in the Manas River Basin and identify the underlying factors driving these processes. The findings indicated that (1) the general trend of oasification and desertification exhibited the expansion of oases and the retreat of deserts. Specifically, the oasification area showed a "decrease-increase-decrease" pattern over time, while the desertification area consistently decreased. (2) In terms of spatial distribution, oasification and desertification displayed a transition from scattered and disordered patterns to an overall more organized pattern, with the hotspot area of desertification shifting from Shawan County to Manas County over time. (3) Population density, average land GDP, soil type and annual precipitation significantly influenced the degree of oasification, with driving force q-values above 0.4, which were the key factors driving oasification. Population density and average land GDP significantly affected the degree of desertification, with driving force q-values above 0.35, which were the key factors driving desertification. The driving force of all factors increased significantly after the interaction, and socioeconomic factors influenced oasification and desertification more than other factors. Available water resources are decreasing in river basins around the world. Some reseachers have suggested various indicators and methods that should be used to allocate water resources. This paper attempts an integrated approach to water allocation that accounts for a wide range of factors at the river basin level. Using the Hai, Huai, and Yellow River Basins of Shandong Province in China, 19 indicators were assimilated into a water scarcity index and weighted based on surveys collected from 82 multidisciplinary experts. Fuzzy set probability was then used to quantify water scarcity for each river basin. A water allocation method was also calculated using 13 indicators and objectively weighted using the analytical hierarchy process. Results show that all river basins in Shandong Province have severe water scarcity and highlight that economic factors play the most critical role in water scarcity, followed by water supply factors then water demand. Water allocation indicators were prioritized according to water resource pressure and utilization proportionality among districts in the Huai River Basin. The objective of this study is to attempt to assess the effect of green finance in reducing carbon emissions in China, analyze the transformative role of policy impact in the development of green finance markets, and investigate the impact mechanisms of how green finance affects carbon dioxide emissions. Our time frame from 2007 to 2018 is selected for the empirical study by integrating the availability of data due to the scarcity of relevant statistics in the early days of green finance. Location of this study is in China where 30 provinces are included, excluding Tibet due to severe data shortage. As for methodology, we construct a green finance evaluation index system containing five indicators by entropy weight method, choose dynamic spatial Durbin model (DSDM) for empirical research, and perform mechanism analysis of restructuring industry and greening technology as intermediary channel. Our findings demonstrate that green finance in China does significantly reduce carbon emissions, and its spatial spillover effect and long-term effect are also verified. Furthermore, green finance tends to reduce CO2 emissions through restructuring industry and greening technology. Correspondingly, policy implications are recommended. First, improving green financial market and strengthening information disclosure of green financial market are crucial to facilitate green finance development. Local governments formulate carbon emission reduction strategies focusing on space by joint conference or coordination mechanism like river head system. Abstract: Freshwater is the essential resource element to support and ensure human life and regional sustainable development. On the basis of the concept of ecosystem service footprint proposed by Burkhard, in this paper, we introduce a new methodological approach that addresses the sustainability and capability of regional freshwater provision and consumption, which we have coined freshwater ecosystem service footprint model (FESF model). The FESF model enhances the accuracy of water provision and consumption calculations and reveals a spatial-pattern of freshwater ecosystem service footprint at the watershed scale, overcoming the shortcomings of the traditional water footprint model, which was first introduced by Rees and Wackernagel in 1992. The proposed model is tested in the Beijing–Tianjin–Hebei (BTH) freshwater supply area in China, where water use restrictions are regularly imposed on the population and economic activities. The results of the physical process and theoretical analysis reveal that FESF model is a reliable and helpful model for researchers to understand the regional freshwater situation. The average FESF is 0.94hectare per capita in BTH, with a maximum of 2.52hectare per capita and a minimum of 0.36hectare per capita. Approximately 16.8% of the considered region, primarily parts of the mid-northern region and the surrounding eastern and southern low-lying regions, is under high freshwater resource pressure. A robust tree-ring-width chronology was developed from two Pinus tabulaeformis sampling sites in the source of the Fenhe River, Shanxi Province, China. Based on the tree-ring-width indices, a 157-year long Palmer Drought Severity Index (PDSI) was reconstructed, which explains 53.7% of the variance of the modeled PDSI over the common period 1957-2008. The drought periods in the study area include 1914-1931 and 1970 to the present, whereas the wet periods were 1866-1892 and 1932-1969. The drought of 1914-1931 was a severe long-lasting drought with a low inter-annual variability, and the drought of 1970-2009 was an overall long-term drought with a high inter-annual variability. The period of 1866-1892 is a continuously wet period with a low inter-annual variability and the period of 1932-1969 is an overall long-term wet period with a high inter-annual variability. The reconstructed PDSI series in the source of the Fenhe River shows synchronous variations with the regional drought/wetness indices. Spatial correlation analyses indicate that the higher correlations lie exclusively in the Fenhe River Basin. This indicates that the reconstructed PDSI has regional representativeness and can represent the drought history of the entire Fenhe River Basin to some extent. Furthermore, the reconstructed PDSI matches with the variability of the per unit yield of summer grain crops in Shanxi Province very well and they have significant correlation. From a long-term perspective the reconstructed PDSI series could supply scientific and valuable information to the water resources management and then help the sustainable development in agricultural production, economic development, and ecosystem balance. The main aim of this article is to analyse the role of the Lancang-Mekong Cooperation (LMC)) and to explore current milestones and challenges in the context of regional water cooperation. The LMC represents a specific form of a sub-regional platform which has been established in 2016 by China's government. The purpose of this intergovernmental organization is to promote regional cooperation between six riparian states (China, Myanmar, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam) and ensure sustainable development of the Lancang-Mekong Sub-region. The results show that despite the LMC does not meet all the criteria to become a proper River Basin Organization (RBO), it still remains highly progressive and widely popular among the riparian states. Currently, according to RBOs database from Oregon State University (2019) there can be identified only three inter-basin RBOs which together ensure transboundary water cooperation in Southeast Asia. The author concludes that despite the LMC offering many opportunities for further river development, the LMC still did not reach its full potential and face several challenges. Data has been collected by process-tracing analysis of official documents and from secondary literature related to the LMC and Mekong River development. The author applied the concept of multi-track water diplomacy and compare the current performance of the LMC with other RBOs to illustrate the role of RBOs in TWM. The findings of this article therefore can be applied to other case studies where RBOs possess a strong position in shaping TWM and where China builds up viable regional cooperation. Urban land-use planning is becoming increasingly complex in China because it requires estimating the future urban extent and balancing its various aspects, e.g., provision of enough housing and employment opportunities and preservation of the environment. This paper presents an integrative approach to the problem of sustainable land-use planning. Specifically, an urban growth simulation tool, a cellular automata model, was used to determine the extent of the urban area, and a neural network approach was used to quantitatively predict the land-use structure in the projected year. A multiobjective optimization genetic algorithm was then developed to search for Pareto-optimal urban land-use plans within the urban extent determined by the urban growth model. To search for a sustainable urban land-use plan, social, economic, and environmental objectives were defined that reflect the multiple objectives of the urban system. In addition to these nonspatial goals, objectives concerning the spatial distribution of land usages were proposed. These are classified as local and global spatial objectives. A case study of the Donghu Lake watershed was conducted. Donghu Lake is one of the largest downtown lakes in central China, and the watershed area is undergoing rapid urbanization and suffering from nonpoint source water pollution. Historically, paddy soils are the most valuable natural resources that produce about 90% of staple food in eastern coastal China. Dispersed patterns of rapid rural settlement expansion, or 'exurban', are recognized as key threats to the region's food security through paddy soil loss. Analyzing the process of ex-urbanization and its impact has profound implications for the sustainable development of rural China. Based on official statistics and data derived from satellite images, dynamics of rural settlement expansion and paddy soil loss were outlined for Tiaoxi watershed during China's market transition period (1994-2003). Particularly, rural settlements became more aggregated and total area expanded by 183% at an average rate of 12.3% per year for the whole watershed. Existing cores, open areas away from urban centers and areas near major transportation lines and river channels, observed the highest specialization in rural residential growth. Being closely associated with rural settlement in spatial distribution, open large paddy soil patches acted as another kind of center for rural settlement expansion within the landscape. Variations in rural settlement expansion were detected among different-tier counties, such as speed of rural settlement expansion, speed of build-ups growth per capita. These variations were closely related to social-economic development. The rapid rural settlement expansion led to a considerable loss of paddy soil, about 11% of the total amount for the whole watershed. Linear regression identified a significant relationship between paddy soil loss and rural settlement expansion. Given the social and ecological problems associated with paddy soil loss, we argue that innovative and effective planning policies as well as management programs that target at paddy soil protection should be developed and implemented in rural China.
