Objective: The study reported in this paper was aimed at developing understanding of depression-related knowledge and preferences surrounding professional help, medication, and treatment methods among Chinese living in Shanghai, China. Methods: A multi-stage cluster sampling method in which participants were taken from 6 of the 20 districts in Shanghai was adopted for this study. The 522 Shanghai Chinese participants were presented with a vignette describing an individual with depression before being asked questions designed to assess both their understanding of depression and their preferences surrounding professional help, medication, and treatment methods. A comparative approach was adopted to identify similarities and differences between our findings and those of two previous studies on the mental health literacy of Chinese living in Melbourne, Australia, and Hong Kong, respectively. Results: A similarly low percentage of Chinese people in each of Shanghai, Hong Kong, and Australia recognized depression. Fewer Shanghai Chinese than Chinese living in Hong Kong and Australia ascribed the 'anxiety/stress' label to the depression vignette and endorsed professionals and informal network members as helpful. Although a far lower percentage of Shanghai Chinese endorsed the use of counseling professionals, a much higher percentage of the same group endorsed Chinese medical doctors and herbal medication. A lower percentage of Shanghai Chinese endorsed 'lifestyle changes' as a strategy for combating depression than did Chinese subjects living in Australia and Hong Kong. On the other hand, a higher percentage of Shanghai residents endorsed psychiatric treatment and the traditional Chinese practices of 'eating nutritious food/taking supplements' and 'qigong' than among the other two groups of Chinese. Conclusions: This study underlines the need for campaigns aimed at improving the mental health literacy of Chinese in Shanghai. Objective: To investigate the association between folate levels and the risk of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) risk during the whole pregnancy. Design: In this retrospective cohort study of pregnant women, serum folate levels were measured before 24 gestational weeks (GW). GDM was diagnosed between 24th and 28th GW based on the criteria of the International Association of Diabetes and Pregnancy Study Groups. General linear models were performed to examine the association of serum folate with plasma glucose (i.e. linear regressions) and risk of GDM (i.e. log-binomial regressions) after controlling for confounders. Restricted cubic spline regression was conducted to test the dosage–response relationship between serum folate and the risk of GDM. Setting: A sigle, urban hospital in Shanghai, China. Participants: A total of 42 478 women who received antenatal care from April 2013 to March 2017 were included. Results: Consistent positive associations were observed between serum folate and plasma glucose levels (fasting, 1-h, 2-h). The adjusted relative risks (RR) and 95 % CI of GDM across serum folate quartiles were 1·00 (reference), 1·15 (95 % CI (1·04, 1·26)), 1·40 (95 % CI (1·27, 1·54)) and 1·54 (95 % CI (1·40, 1·69)), respectively (P -for-trend < 0·001). The positive association between serum folate and GDM remained when stratified by vitamin B12 (adequate v. deficient groups) and the GW of serum folate measurement (≤13 GW v. >13 GWs) Conclusions: The findings of this study may provide important evidence for the public health and clinical guidelines of pregnancy folate supplementation in terms of GDM prevention. Controlling entry to an island continent proved more complex than the Immigration Restriction Act, 1901 framers imagined. Chinese people had been coming to Australia in numbers since the 1850s and by 1901 had substantial community, family, and economic links with their Pearl River Delta villages, around the colonies and with Hong Kong and Shanghai. Resistance was fought out on the boats themselves; musters were held, documents examined, searches made, and dictation tests administered. Secrecy, fraud, informers, and harassment reduced but did not eliminate communities while also causing governments much embarrassment before this first attempt at halting boat people was abandoned. Social exclusion is an important determinant of health. However, little is known about the relationship between social exclusion and health in older adults. To address this gap, this study examined the characteristics of social exclusion and relationships to the health status among 419 Chinese adults aged 60 and older from three communities in Shanghai, China. Logistic regression analyses revealed that the relationship between social exclusion and health status varied according to the type of exclusion (material, social, civic, service and neighbourhood) and health variables. Large-scale internal migrations within China have led to speculation of increased drug use, but with little empirical evidence. This cross-sectional study examines the association between migration characteristics and illicit drug use in 100 general male migrants and 239 "money boys" (i.e., male migrants engaging in same-sex transactional sex) in Shanghai, China. Only three general male migrants reported any drug use. Among money boys, lifetime illicit drug use was 12%; Ecstasy and methamphetamine appeared to be the most popular drugs. In addition, depression prevalence was very high among both types of male migrants. Depression was associated with lifetime soft- and hard-drug use, while earning a higher income was associated with lifetime soft-drug use. These findings provide the first set of quantitative evidence of illicit drug use among Chinese male migrants. Although illicit drug use among male migrants is low compared to Western countries, its resurgence after 30 years of drug control gives cause for concern. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Estrogen was considered to be an important protective factor for cardiovascular diseases in women. Genetic association studies suggested that variations of ESR1and ESR2 genes might have a potential role in lipid profile. Our study aimed to investigate the association of single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of ESR1 and ESR2 with hyperlipidemia in Chinese Han postmenopausal women. A total of 443 postmenopausal women aged between 55 and 71 years were recruited from Shanghai, China for a case–control study (154 women with hyperlipidemia and 289 controls). We measured plasma estradiol concentration, glucose and lipid profile levels, evaluated their lifestyle and sequenced four SNPs, namely PvuII (rs2234693) and XbaI (rs9340799) of ESR1 and 1082A>G (rs1256049) and 1730A>G (rs4986938) of ESR2. PvuII (rs2234693) and XbaI (rs9340799) showed significantly different distributions between cases and controls (P=0.002 and P=0.023, respectively). In addition, haplotypes constructed from PvuII–XbaI were also associated with hyperlipidemia (global P=0.012). Haplotypes T–A (P=0.005, odds ratio (OR) 1.52, 95% confidence interval (95% CI): 1.13–2.05) and C–G (P=0.010, OR 0.62, 95% CI: 0.43–0.89) had susceptible and protective effects, respectively. 1082A>G (rs1256049) and 1730A>G (rs4986938) showed no statistical association with hyperlipidemia. In conclusion, our results suggested that ESR1 might have a potential role in hyperlipidemia risk, independent of age, estradiol level, body mass index and lifestyle in Chinese Han postmenopausal women. Background and Objectives The purpose of the work was to analyse the genotype of D-elute (DEL) samples and to elucidate whether there were novel DEL alleles in Chinese population. Materials and Methods D-negative samples were identified by an indirect antiglobulin test (IAT), and absorption∖elution tests to screen weak D, partial D and DEL phenotypes. DELs were further analysed by multiplex PCR, PCR-sequence-specific primers (PCR-SSP) and sequencing. Some of the DEL samples were determined to show RHD zygosity by PCR-restriction fragment length polymorphism or real-time quantitative PCR. Results Of 400 253 samples from individual donations, 1585 (0·40%) were typed as D negative. Among these D-negative samples, 279 DELs were observed. Two hundred and sixty-eight DELs were confirmed to have the RHD (K409 K) allele. Three DELs seemed to have RHD-CE-D hybrid alleles, including one RHD-CE(4–9)-D, one RHD-CE(2–5)-D and one suspected RHD(1–9)-CE. Five novel RHD alleles were found among the rest of the DEL samples, including four RHD 3 g > a, one RHD (R10W), one RHD (L18P), one RHD (L84P) and one RHD (A137E). Eighty-four DELs were analysed for Rhesus box zygosity, there were 77 RHD+/ RHD–and seven RHD+/ RHD+. Conclusion About 4·35% apparent D negative Chinese individuals were weak D or partial D, while 17·60% were DEL. Novel DEL alleles are rare, and all but 11 of the 279 DELs were due to the most common DEL allele, RHD (K409 K). The RHD 3G > A might be the second most frequent DEL allele in Chinese. Objective To describe clinical features of patients with multiple sclerosis (MS) in Shanghai, China. Methods Prevalent patients with MS were identified and investigated by a network of physicians in 11 districts of Shanghai during the period from 1 September 2004 to 31 August 2005. Admission registries of each hospital in the study area were checked systematically for patients with a diagnosis of MS, neuromyelitis optica or other demyelinating disorders. All patients with collected information were evaluated by four senior neurologists according to the McDonald criteria. Results There were 249 (146 female and 103 male) patients with a confirmed MS diagnosis, at a female-to-male ratio of 1.4. The mean age at onset of MS was 37.4 years for the 249 patients with MS and, on the prevalence day, 42.7 years. The most frequent location of clinical MS lesions in the central nervous system was the spinal cord (61%), followed by the cerebrum (55%) and optic nerves (41%). Nearly all (96%) of the patients with MS had been examined by magnetic resonance imaging, and 226 (94%) patients of those examined were suggestive of MS. No family history of MS was found in any of the patients. Most (86%) of the patients had no or mild disability on the prevalence day (31 December 2004). Almost all (96%) patients with MS had been treated with corticosteroids. Conclusion Clinical features of patients with MS are described based on the information from the largest case series reported among Chinese.
