Much attention has been paid to using English movies in senior high school English teaching in China since the release of 2017 edition of Senior High School English Curriculum Standards that lists English Movie Appreciation as an optional compulsory course. Senior high school teachers have conducted substantial research over the past three years regarding the practical application of English movies in their teaching, yet there has been a lack of thorough and systematic of analysis of the large number of relevant papers published, which, more or less, limits the understanding and further advancements of this study area. This paper attempts, in light of the emerging systematic review methodology, to present an overview of the research papers spanning the period 2019 to 2022 on the use of English movies in Chinese senior high school from the four perspectives: language ability, cultural awareness, thinking quality, and learning ability based on the concept of core literacy of English as an academic discipline in the new curriculum standard. With focus on the discussion of the common problems and corresponding countermeasures that have been sorted out from the works of front-line teachers, the paper also puts forward suggestions and prospects for further studies. Background: Personalised medicine (PM) has been fostered by technological and medical advances, but all stakeholders, including healthcare professionals, citizens and policy makers, should achieve adequate health literacy to promote PM implementation. The "Integrating China in the International Consortium for Personalised Medicine" (IC2PerMed) project, funded by the International Consortium for Personalised Medicine, focuses on this issue by highlighting the need to educate healthcare professionals and empower citizens. Within the aforementioned project, building on a mapping of European and Chinese policies in PM, experts in the field of PM participated in an online workshop and a following two-round Delphi survey, in order to identify the priority areas of intervention for healthcare professionals' education and curricula, engagement and empowerment of citizens and patients. Results: Nine experts completed the survey and reached a consensus on seventeen priorities: seven were related to health professionals' education and curricula, whereas ten on citizen and patients' awareness and empowerment. Conclusion: These priorities emphasized the importance of education and health literacy, multidisciplinary and international collaboration, public trust, and consideration of ethical, legal, and social issues. The present experience highlights the relevance of the involvement of stakeholders in informing decision-makers, developing appropriate national plans, strategies, and policies, and ensuring the adequate implementation of PM in health systems. As High Speed Rail (HSR) has proliferated globally, so has a related research field dedicated to exploring and addressing its unique issues. Yet, studies to understand and classify the HSR research domain are limited. This paper addresses the gap, using bibliometric analysis to identify future research areas and 20 candidate topics for literature review based on keyword analysis through VOSviewer. Article and review papers related to HSR published in the last 20 years (2003-2022) were retrieved from Scopus, and then analyzed to determine the split in knowledge between languages, the collaboration between countries and institutions, highly productive and cited journals, and research topics which have and have not been reviewed. Approximately 30% of the search results were published exclusively in Chinese, highlighting the importance of extending the evaluation to cover both languages. This is a novel aspect of the work, which has enabled the recognition of potential knowledge gaps. It is recommended that future reviews incorporate works in both languages, possibly through international collaboration. The global dissemination of Christianity has resulted in diverse singing styles and historical narratives that incorporate different languages and musical traditions. Chinese Christian hymns, in particular, possess distinctive features that reflect the Chinese thinking mode and cultural values, showcasing the interplay between Western hymns and Chinese singing and poetic and cultural traditions within the Chinese historical context. This paper takes Chinese Christian hymnals published between 1807 and 1949 as its object of study. It conducts research on representative hymnals from three historical stages: the emergence, flourishing, and prosperity of hymns, and examines their compilation and publication. Using methods such as historical research, textual criticism, translation studies, and cross-cultural communication, the paper explores the evolution of Chinese Christian hymns. The paper analyzes such aspects of the hymnals as translating and writing strategies, thematic content, linguistic features, editing and formatting, as well as the selection and composition of melodies. It is concluded that the indigenization of Chinese hymns does not involve outright rejection of foreign elements or unquestioning adherence to local traditions, but rather represents a common ground between Chinese and Western languages and vocal traditions, reflecting the characteristic of glocalization. English in Chinese higher education has shifted from being taught as a foreign language alongside other disciplinary-focussed courses to becoming an important medium of instruction used for learning and teaching non-language related academic subjects. While using English medium instruction (EMI) seems a natural and neutral academic exercise, the switch has muddied the water of EMI implementation and caused a number of social and academic issues for both students and lecturers. These problems include unfair promotion opportunities, unequal access to EMI classes, inadequate learning outcomes, and poor teaching quality. This special issue builds on past and current EMI work that explores issues related to EMI implementation in Chinese higher education institutions and in classrooms. Through the selection of several empirical papers, the special issue shines light on current knowledge, policies and practices of EMI in China to pave the way for research-informed recommendations. In this paper, we reexamine the literature on money demand in China published both in English and Chinese language. Over the past 30 years, there has been a regular stream of papers assessing the Chinese money demand function. The literature mostly focuses on income elasticity, stability, and, especially important for China, the adequate choice and quality of data. In particular, regarding the stability of money demand, we find a substantial publication bias towards rejecting stability. When controlling for publication bias and focusing on longer time periods, our paper strongly suggests a stable long-run money demand in China. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Researchers have long problematized the prevalence of Eurocentrism in modern Western translation theory. Alternative theories have been developing across many contexts, including China. This review examines 153 theory-related articles in four leading indexed Chinese journals that publish studies on translation. We analyzed the selected articles to explore the patterns in the development of Chinese translation theory through the past decade. Our analysis identified three characteristics of the development of Chinese translation theory: (1) Chinese translation theory developed under a heavy Western influence; (2) translation theories developed by translators; and (3) "theory"-related theoretical development on translation. These insights may help readers who do not have direct access to translation studies published in the Chinese language to better appreciate evolving translation theories that may counteract the inadequacy of Eurocentric approaches. The study of China's geo-relations has received wide attention from the academic world. Chinese diplomatic speeches objectively record the process of China's interaction with other countries and the evolution of its attention to current hotspots, and the study of geo-relations hotspots from China's perspective can be conducted based on this officially released unstructured data. This paper selects Chinese Foreign Ministry speech text data and analyzes the hot issues implied in the text data from the perspective of feature vocabulary and topic coding, and the study shows that: (1) The Asia-Pacific and neighboring countries occupy a primary position in the handling of China's geopolitical relations. (2) In recent years, the geopolitical conflict with the United States and other Western countries has shifted from geo-economic to geo-cultural aspects. (3) In terms of topics, trade and economy are the focus of geopolitical relations between countries in the world, and the role of science, technology and innovation elements in the penetration of great power competition is becoming increasingly prominent. (4) In terms of geostrategy, attention is drawn to the impact of NATO's "eastern concern" on the Asia-Pacific region, and the South Pacific island region is a potential major power geopolitical game area that deserves attention. This paper applies text analysis techniques to study the hot issues of China's geopolitical relations, providing a new perspective for the study of geopolitical relations and a certain reference for the development of China's geopolitical relations. Since the time of the first Jesuit mission to China (from the late 16th century onwards), learning the locally spoken language(s) was considered a priority. The Protestant missionaries of the 19th century continued this languagefocused trend: it was fundamental for them as well to be able to learn the language of the Court together with the dialects spoken in Southern China, the area where they mainly settled, especially after the First Opium War. If, on one hand, they could benefit from a good amount of works compiled in the previous centuries to describe Mandarin, on the other hand, they found themselves in lack of tools to learn Cantonese, Hakka, Wu and other Southern topolects. Therefore, they began compiling all sorts of dictionaries, phrasebooks and grammars to fill in this gap. At the same time, they published their linguistic analyses, and considerations, together with Romanization proposals on the periodical press they had set in China, thus reaching a worldwide audience. After an introduction on the English periodical press in China, its founders and main contributors (both missionaries and laymen), this paper will conduct a quantitative and qualitative analysis of the articles concerning the description of 'dialects', better defined as Sinitic languages. The final aim is to show the contribution provided by the authors of two journals in particular, The Chinese Repository and The China Review, whose papers had the merit to broaden the scope of Chinese language studies, thus promoting western and Chinese scholarship on this subject. Drawing on interviews with 40 Chinese gay academics, this paper reveals participants' concerns about conducting queer research in China. These include sexual-identity exposure, difficulty in publishing research and receiving funding, as well as marginalisation within university departments. Informed by Irvine's conceptualisation of sexuality research as dirty work, this research examines the operation of heteronormativity in the constitution of queer research as dirty work. It shows that heteronormativity is intrinsic to research censorship by authorities, as repressive politics pursue regime maintenance and regulate difference. It is argued that Chinese academia is a heteronormative space in which queer research is constrained by the institutions and the Party-state. By teasing out the nuances in participants' experiences of research censorship, this paper highlights the complexity of power at play, which is far from a one-way relationship of authorities exerting power over researchers. Institutions exert power over queer researchers and simultaneously submit to the higher-level power of the Chinese Communist Party political system; at the same time, queer researchers who are governed by heteronormativity and political control can express their agency and resist the censorship. This study examines the association between abnormal disclosure tone in the Management Discussion and Analysis (MD&A) section of annual reports and analysts' forecasting behavior. Using analysts' forecast data of Chinese listed firms from 2008 to 2020, we find that analysts can discern abnormal tone in managers' disclosures, leading to a downward revision of earnings estimates and an enhancement of forecast accuracy. Moreover, we observe that abnormal tone in the MD&A section attracts analysts' attention as they navigate the challenges posed by tone management and diminished information transparency. Collectively, this paper enhances our understanding of analysts' forecasting behavior concerning the extent of tone management observed in MD&A disclosures within emerging markets. Purpose: Scholars have been debating the geopolitical importance of the strengthening China-Russia relationship for some time, noting that the relationship does not constitute a full alliance, but still might have great significance for world politics. This paper aims to improve on this scholarship by examining the evolution of China-Russia cooperation as it relates to the future of North Korea, especially in the wake of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Design, Methodology, Approach: This scholarship represents a methodological advance over most previous discussions of the China-Russia relationship. It embraces the historical development of this relationship, probes structural arrangements in relationship to regional stability, and also draws upon extensive Russian and Chinese language data sets which constitute the material for a “discourse analysis,” to achieve a deeper understanding of this relationship as it pertains to the Korean Peninsula. Findings: Overall, this study documents substantial cooperation between Beijing and Moscow with respect to Korean affairs. While some disagreements between China and Russia do exist in this sphere, the main implication of these developments is the trend toward a hardening of the bipolar structure in Northeast Asia, informed by the growing influence of patriotic and nationalistic elite groups within both China and Russia. However, the study points out a paradox in that this hardening of bipolarity could actually help to stabilize the spiraling tensions that have surrounded North Korea in recent decades. Practical Implications: This paper may help students and policymakers alike in Northeast Asia evaluate the significance of the China-Russia quasi-alliance. Overall, this paper supports the conclusion that the dangers of the China-Russia quasi-alliance need not be exaggerated. Originality Value: This paper is innovative insofar as it gives balanced attention to both China’s and Russia’s discourses and policies toward North Korea and evaluates the influence of Moscow-Beijing’s growing cooperation in the context of the Russia-Ukraine war, as it may impact the future of North Korea and the wider region. This paper provides a bottom-up way of approaching China's macro-level initiative in the regions of Asia and examines the language ideologies and linguistic entrepreneurship of international students as an agentive response to China's rise. Using data gathered via semi-structured interviews, we present the narratives of 26 Asian international students enrolled in courses at higher education institutions in Shanghai. The findings reveal that China's growing presence in the region has increased the instrumental value of Chinese, as a majority of students acknowledged China's rapid development as well as the dominant positioning of Chinese in the current regional language system. Chinese was ideated as linguistic capital in the local labour market, where the learners were empowered to express their desire for material success and upward mobility. The findings also reveal linguistic entrepreneurship associated with Chinese language learning, and such agentive behaviour was previously observed in the domain of English language learning, especially in South Korea. We argue that the process of commodifying the Chinese language appeared to legitimise the value of Chinese in the regions of Asia, while providing an entry point to problematise our current understanding of English hegemony and linguistic imperialism in the changing global landscape. This article identifies and demonstrates the change and continuity in China's science and technology (S&T) policy over 30 years. Firstly, we analyse and compare the two top-level S&T policies in 1985 and 2015 by applying institutional grammar (IG) in Chinese. To situate the policy analysis in the dynamic history, this paper then reviews the development of S&T-related policies from the late 1970s until now. By analysing the policy content and history, we find that policy-making with strong pragmatism continually sets S&T as the role of the engine of economic development. Meanwhile, the paradigm of how China governs S&T changed from decentralization and direct order to top-level design and indirect guide. In terms of the S&T policy framework, China grows into a holistic innovation policy (HIP) concentrating on demand-side and environment-side and soliciting more public sectors, from the linear model. These changes between the two eras do not happen suddenly but proceed gradually. Nowadays, information explosion happens in every field. In the stock market of China, automatically understanding the market dynamics is extremely important. However, the information and datasets in Chinese are overwhelming for researchers in the field. How to extract useful information and understand the underlying logic in the Chinese corpus are the research hotspot. Causal relation identification is one of the most central tasks. Many works have made important progress in finding the causal relations in open-domain text, however, there is still space for further explorations in the specific domain of the financial field. In this paper, we propose to use the graph convolution network (GCN) to help represent the dependency relations among the entities in the logical networks provided by the Chinese dependency parsing tool, language technology platform(LTP). The motivation for using the GCN method to help represent the dependency relations is that the causal relations are highly correlated with language structures. Besides, we also choose to use the domain-specific pre-trained model FinBERT because this pre-trained model is specific to the financial field. Results show that the GCN-based method and pertained models of FinBERT in our proposed model play a key role in outperforming the baseline model of the traditional sequential labeling method and the start of art method from F1 of 0.4573 and 0.5506 to 0.6254. Our approach also wins third place in the Eastern District of software service outsourcing competition in China in the year 2021. Critical discourse analysis aims to explore the dialectical relationship between discourse and ideology. Based on psycholinguistic research, this paper analyzes the Chinese and American media's news reports and comments on the COVID-19. It aims to expose the hidden psychological messages and ideologies behind the words. The corpus in this paper is mainly from the official media of China Daily and Time from December 2019 to January 2021 in China and the United States. This paper uses Wang Zhenhua's Appraisal Theory and Halliday's Systemic Functional Grammar as tools to make a comparative analysis of the corpus. At the textual level, languages are classified and lexical choices are analyzed followed by the analysis of the reporter's ideology after reviewing the motivation of the reporters of two countries. On the level of social responsibility expression and discourse, the paper analyzes the news reports, which are characterized by the combination of the reporter's views on the news. In the aspect of social practice, the social and cultural factors and background of news reports are analyzed. China calls for strengthening cooperation and exchanges with other countries to jointly fight the epidemic. The Chinese government has actively shared its experience and made corresponding contributions to international economic recovery. However, the US government shirks its responsibility by claiming that the effective implementation of Chinese methods and experience in China does not mean that it can achieve corresponding results in Europe and the US. At the same time, the United States provides medical supplies to other countries. This study hopes to help awaken readers' critical thinking and increase their awareness of the anti-control of mass discourse. At the same time, it is hoped that readers can view the epidemic from a more scientific perspective, understand the facts and reject the unwarranted panic. Work and family are two important areas in people’s life, and the relationship between them will have an important impact on the attitudes and behaviors of employees in an organization. In the context of Chinese culture, the organization hopes to have an ideal employee, and the family hopes to have a good wife and mother. Based on the resource conservation theory, this paper examines the relationship between bi-directional work–family conflict and job burnout, perceived organizational support and job satisfaction by using latent variable path analysis method with 527 Chinese female university teachers as subjects. The results showed that: (1) Work–family conflict, family–work conflict and job burnout could negatively predict job satisfaction, while perceived organizational support could positively predict job satisfaction, (2) Job burnout played a partial mediating role in the process of work–family conflict and family–work conflict affecting job satisfaction, and the effect values were − 0.220 and − 0.168, and (3) Perceived organizational support played a moderating role in the first half of the mediating effect of “work–family conflict → job burnout → job satisfaction” and “family–work conflict → job burnout → job satisfaction,” and the moderating mediating index was 0.015 and 0.010. The study contributes to a better understanding of the relationships among bi-directional work–family conflict, job burnout, perceived organizational support, and job satisfaction among female university teachers. Our findings highlight potential avenues for interventions by university administrators in the context of Chinese culture aimed at balancing work and family and improving job satisfaction among female university teachers. The classical communities had the confidence that their difficult written languages placed an exclusive position as the literary language. Along with Latin, traditional written Chinese was also far from the colloquial language. In modern China, many intellectuals felt that it was necessary to overcome this situation and establish a new language education system. Hu Shih (1891-1962), picked up in this paper, is still one of the most famous philosophers, who reevaluated vernacular Chinese as the new “active” literary language. This paper aims to examine the formation of curriculum theory for language education through the case of Hu Shih’s contemplation and practice. For this purpose, the author analyzes his statements concerning curriculum and instruction for language education. Hu Shih went to the United States in September 1910 with the help of a government scholarship. During summer vacation in 1915, certain staff members at Chinese student office in Washington D. C. distributed documents on Chinese situation. Because of this incident, Hu Shih was regularly discussing about Chinese literature with his friends. At the same time, he formulated rules for the literary reform and published the improved version of them as the eight points. After studying in the U.S., he proposed the thesis “Guoyu de Wenxue, Wenxue de Guoyu(國語的文學・文學的國語)” in his paper. This new thesis means “Literature written in national language, National language of literary value” in English. When returning to China, he read Edith Sichel’s book and wrote the impression in his diary. Referring to the history of European Renaissance, he pointed out that the accumulation of creating practical works based on vernacular Chinese would become the basis of national language with literary value as Chinese Renaissance. To promote these steps, he started to argue for the necessity of new curriculum and instruction theory for language education. In this context, he concretely suggested that all school textbooks composed in colloquial language should be distributed from the lower grades, and classical literature should be arranged after junior high school and high school stages. This paper picks up Hu Shih’s statements on curriculum and instruction for language education. The analysis of this paper reveals that he proposed the thesis “Guoyu de Wenxue, Wenxue de Guoyu” with reference to European Renaissance. As Li Jinxi, a famous linguist in modern China, mentioned, Hu Shih’s argument played a key role in unifying the language unification and the literary reform. This background also set the stage for the development of his theory on language education and his contribution as the core policymaker for educational reform in the May Fourth Period. The China's Standards of English Language Ability (CSE) is developed to serve as a guide for English language teaching in China. Assessment for learning (AFL) serves as an alternative assessment approach that maximizes student learning. They are closely linked in the sense that both claim to serve the needs of teaching and learning. Just as AFL practices in China are generally lacking, so is CSE in need of more research for use in educational context. In this paper, I describe a two-semester intervention at a Chinese university where I attempt to use a CSE-based scoring rubric in combination with the major AFL activities to foster development of writing skills of students who learn English as a foreign language (EFL) in the college English class. After a review of the related literature, I describe the context in which I implemented the project that incorporated CSE rubric into major AFL activities, i.e. peer/self-assessment, and how I implement AFL guided pedagogical activities. Based on the evidence collected in the interim, a temporary conclusion is drawn that the students, as well as the teacher researcher, reap benefits from the intervention project. This study takes the Yong-deng dialect as a case study to investigate the phenomenon of tonal merging observed in Northwest Chinese dialects. It begins by examining the various monosyllabic tone patterns of the Yong-deng dialect, then supplements this with a review of the relevant literature, comparisons with the tone patterns of the neighbouring dialects, and an analysis of its tone sandhi in disyllabic and trisyllabic combinations. Each step of the dialect's tonal variation is scrutinised, allowing for the identification of pertinent phonetic biases and the derivation of associated phonological rules. The central argument advanced here is that both synchronic tonal variation and diachronic tone change are governed by specific phonological rules. Despite the ostensibly variable phonetic manifestations, these rules can enable the prediction of the trajectory of tone change. The study examines the complex interactions between coaches and athletes in federative basketball in two different cultural contexts: China and Spain. The paper examines the interpersonal psychological dimensions from a direct viewpoint and a meta-perspective, drawing on the Coach-Athlete Relationship Questionnaire (CART-Q) and guided by the 3Cs model (Closeness, Commitment, and Complementarity). The CART-Q was translated and modified for use in both nations' federative basketball organizational systems to guarantee cross-cultural applicability. Careful translation techniques were used to achieve semantic homogeneity between the Spanish and Chinese versions of the questionnaire, including talks with knowledgeable linguists. The translated versions improved response comparability and kept the same item numbers as the original 2012 instrument. Out of the 771 distributed questionnaires, 763 legitimate answers were gathered via online surveys conducted using secure platforms (Google Forms for Spain and Wenjuanxing for China). The research included a threestep mediation study using structural equation modeling, which allowed for a thorough investigation of the concurrent validity of the modified CART-Qs. The findings indisputably support the reliability and validity of the CART-Qs translated into Chinese and Spanish. The research shows small but significant cultural disparities in the comprehensive perspective of coach-athlete interactions. Since the beginning of the twentieth century, a frequent claim among speakers of local Chinese languages (called fangyan in Chinese) is that their native languages preserve the language of antiquity better than the Beijing-based national language, Mandarin. This paper explores the origin of these claims and probes their significance in the making of the Han ethnoracial collective identity. I argue that claims of linguistic proximity to the imagined ancient origins of Chinese civilization represent a form of "hegemonic Han-ness"—an idealized form of the Han collective identity that was both internally hegemonic, in that it was meant to supersede other expressions of Han-ness, and externally hegemonic, in that it was meant to uphold the superiority of the Han people over other ethnoracial groups. From Zhang Taiyan, whose work provided a model for drawing linguistic connections between contemporary local languages and the language spoken at the dawn of Chinese civilization, to local gazetteer authors, who used linguistic data to prove their mother tongues directly had preserved the language of antiquity without being adulterated by the languages of non-Han peoples, this paper explores how various groups drew upon the cultural power of an idealized Han-centered past to challenge the authority afforded to the national language by the state. In this paper, we review the empirical research on the value of auditing, audit independence, and audit fees published in Accounting Research and Auditing Research, the two premier accounting and auditing journals in China. We identify the main themes in the three areas and assess the consistency of the available empirical evidence on the topics we review. We also highlight the innovativeness of auditing studies published in Chinese language journals to English language readers of the global accounting academic community, before introducing the papers included in this Special Issue on Auditing in China. In addition to its relevance to the history of education, the study of changes in curriculum design also provides insights into changes in educational attitudes. This paper examines the historical evolution of the Changshi curriculum in China's mainland, explains the concept of Changshi and its different understandings in Changshi or general knowledge courses, and then applies the concept to the narration and classification of history. The first mass migration in China took place at the end of the Western Jin, which resulted in the southward transfer of the Central Plains Culture and brought about huge social changes. Such social changes exerted significant impacts on the gentry of the Jin Dynasty. This paper used a huge volume of Classical Chinese legacy text of Jin gentry members. We used CC-LIWC to calculate frequencies of different word categories used in these text contents and conducted an analysis of variance to measure significant differences between the three groups. We found 16 categories of words with significant differences and calculated their effect sizes, such as tense markers (tensem), F = 3.588, P < 0.05, η² = 0.034; modal particles (modal_pa), F = 3.468, P < 0.05, η² = 0.053; words for affective processes (affect), F = 3.096, P < 0.05, η² = 0.028; words for cognitive processes (cogproc), F = 3.308, P < 0.05, η² = 0.031; words for perceptual processes (percept), F = 7.137, P < 0.05, η² = 0.06. Combining the psycholinguistics of the 16 categories of words and researches of historians on the Jin Dynasty, we then analyzed the direct and indirect, immediate and long-lasting psycholinguistic impacts of this mass migration on the gentry themselves and their descendants. This paper examines the linguistic landscape of refurbished historical streets to reveal the semiotic construction of antiquity and commodification of heritage. Based on signage data collected from four historical blocs in Shanghai, Hangzhou and Ningbo in East China, this study reveals how Chinese semiotic artifacts contribute to stylizing antiquity and reinvigorating the space of consumption. Results suggest that the fabricated historical streets sustain the tourism rhetoric of cultural pride and commercial profit by appealing to history, tradition, exoticism, and nostalgia. In order to further improve the performance of the automatic grammar error detection system, a new Chinese grammar recognition and correction model is proposed in this paper. Based on the transformer attention mechanism, the bias matrix of Gaussian distribution is added to improve the attention of the model to local text and strengthen the information extraction of wrong words and surrounding words in the wrong text. In addition, the ON_LSTM model is used to extract grammatical information from the special grammatical structure of error text. The experimental results show that the two methods can effectively improve the accuracy and recall rate, and the fused model achieves the highest F1 value. The study of happiness and subjective wellbeing (SWB) has received increased interest among scholars in the People’s Republic of China (PRC), who published their findings nationally in Chinese language journals. This paper introduces their work to the international audience. The first study appeared in the journals in 1999, and about 800 research papers have been published to date. The field is anchored in ten areas: the most salient are the general surveying of SWB; areas within health psychology; and personality research. There was a paucity of research in most areas, and a disproportional amount of research in relation to geographical area. Most research was conducted in Shandong (North East China) and Guangdong (South China), whereas no studies reported in the Chinese journals have been conducted in regions such as Inner Mongolia and Tibet. The majority of studies used augmented versions of Western scales as their measurement instrument, although Chinese scholars have developed their own scales. The research field is developing rapidly, but is limited currently by its infancy, overuse of student samples, inadequate descriptions of research methodology, and isolation from studies published outside the country. Although much research acknowledges the positive contributions of CT dispositions to learning a foreign language, less scale development work has focused on the dispositions towards critical thinking of foreign language students in the Chinese language, leading to the limited availability of reliable and valid Chinese critical thinking disposition measurements in foreign language education. The current research aims to develop and validate the Chinese Critical Thinking Disposition Scale using Exploratory Factor Analysis and Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) in two foreign language student samples from China. It filled the gap of limited reliable and valid Chinese scales assessing critical thinking disposition. A total of 538 (103 for EFA and 435 for CFA) foreign language students in China from Zaozhuang University and Jiangxi Normal University participated in the study. Results of the CFA confirmed a five-factor CHCTDS with 17 items on a seven-point Likert scale as an acceptable model fit for the data (χ 2 /df= 3.492, NFI= .911, CFI= .934, TLI= .918, IFI= .935, and RMSEA= .076) with good reliability and convergent as well as discriminant validity. The Cronbach’s α was .934 for the overall scale, and that of the five subscales ranged from .776 to .851. Therefore, the CHCTDS developed in this paper may be recommended as a valid Chinese scale measuring foreign language learners’ critical thinking dispositions. Systemic functional translation studies (SFTS) has been a research area sustained by scholars from both Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) and translation studies over the past decades. In China, there have been an increasing number of studies in SFTS after the 2000s, with Professor Guowen Huang being one of the pioneering and influential scholars contributing to this emerging research area. This paper is a transcript of an interview conducted with Guowen Huang and it serves to provide a general introduction to his research. In the interview, he discusses his motivation for exploring SFTS, the advantages of applying SFL to translation studies, and the Ph.D. students he has supervised over the past decades. He also introduces his own work on the translations of ancient Chinese poems, the translations of the Analects (Lunyu 论语) of Confucius, and his investigation of applying ecolinguistics to translation studies. This paper proposes a concept of campus vitality of languages: the ability of a language to maintain its prestige, visibility and continuity on university campuses. A seven-factor framework is developed for on-the-ground investigation of the relevant languages in a given campus context. These indexical factors are the number, distribution, and proportion of users; usage and visibility in campus domains; and institutional and user attitudes toward the languages. The application of this framework in a second-tier university in China reveals some sociolinguistic information: the presence of more languages on campus does not necessarily increase students' diversity experiences; English supremacy in higher education in China is posing a threat to the status of the national language in the academic domain, an issue that has drawn administrative attention from the government; a more balanced ecology is not only desirable but also achievable if the seven-factor framework is followed by government and by university management. Enhancing student motivation to manage their learning process and attain selftransformation in Oral English learning presents a notable challenge. This study emerged from a Role Play Oral English Course (RPOEC) which utilizes English cartoon film clips to enhance primary students' oral English skills through role play, facilitating meaningful language input and output. Implemented in a Chinese context where English language exposure is limited, this qualitative case study, combined with action research, explores how autonomous learning is fostered through RPOEC. The study engaged a Grade Six class of 30 students (25 girls and 5 boys) in northern China, investigating strategies to trigger learners' interests and form their independent learner identities autonomously, empower learners in their educational journey, encourage reflective practices in oral English learning, and involve learners in evaluative processes. Data, collected through a combination of observations, focus group discussions, and document analysis for three months, were thematically analyzed across four intertwined perspectives: situated learning, interactive communication, cooperative learning, and evaluative discussions. The paper posits that the outlined curricular approach can be tailored to educators' needs aiming to cultivate students' oral English skills within a situated, interactive, and collaborative learning environment, pushing learners towards autonomous engagement. • A 7-factor Chinese version of the FCRSS had acceptable reliability and validity. • Significant gender, age, educational level, and driving experience differences in the perception of the FCRS were found. • Young drivers who were prone to traffic accidents showed lower levels of perception of the FCRS. • The propensity for perception of the FCRS in China was different from that reported by young drivers in most other countries. Since the original version of the Family Climate for Road Safety Scale (FCRSS) was released in 2013, many studies have used this scale to measure young drivers' perception of family value for safe driving in countries around the world. The goals of this paper were to adapt the FCRSS to Chinese culture and language, examine its relationships to sociodemographic characteristics and self-reported traffic accidents, and compare young Chinese drivers' perceptions of Family Climate for Road Safety (FCRS) to those reported by young drivers from other countries. A sample of 864 young Chinese drivers participated in this study and completed a four-part questionnaire: FCRSS, Reckless Driving Habits Scale (RDHS), DULA Dangerous Driving Index (DDDI), and sociodemographic characteristics and traffic accidents. A total of four valuable conclusions were drawn by analyzing these data. Firstly, a 7-factor 54-item Chinese version of the FCRSS had acceptable reliability and validity. Secondly, significant gender, age, educational level, and driving experience differences in the perception of the FCRS were found. The drivers who scored higher on the perception of the FCRS were female, younger, better-educated, and less experienced in driving. Thirdly, young drivers who were prone to traffic accidents showed lower levels of perception of the FCRS. Fourthly, the propensity for perception of the FCRS in China was different from that reported by young drivers in most other countries. Few Sino‐Tibetan bilingualisms are celebrated in Amdo Tibet. Registers like "mixed language," "peasant language," and vernacular Mandarins are denounced through their perceived association with Chinese colonial influence. However, Putonghua‐Tibetan "bilinguals" are revered among the same demographic. When Tibetan and Chinese language communities intersect each other, a concern for many arises as to how one calibrates one's own "bi‐ness" as a Tibetan bilingual. In this paper, I explore how "Sinicized" figures are configurated for Tibetans. I argue that language works in many ways to disrupt previously stable ethnoracial identities as well as to mediate ethnoracial alignment or a lack thereof. Intersectional personae—binding intersections of linguistic repertoires with biographic fractals like gender, class, race/ethnicity, sexuality, profession, and many more—personify such disruptions for users of languages. I also describe the affective motion—or ethnoracialized anxieties and aspirations— in adopting or sidestepping these intersectional personae for a population that feel they are going through racialization (for different publics) in many aspects of their lives. Attending to intra‐ethnoracial evaluations, I also delineate and compare vernacular colonialism and Putonghua colonialism in showing that "same but different" registers might be a vantage point to a more empirical understanding of Sino‐ as well as other forms of colonialism. This paper draws on linguistic-ethnographic fieldwork in Chengdu, China to consider the utility of broad labels such as Chinese, Western and gay in accounting for the performance of sexual and cultural identity. I problematise work which takes such notions to be stable and self-evidently referential, arguing instead that identity is much more fluid, emergent and discourse-dependent than conventional understandings tend to imply. I focus on visibility of queer sexual identity partly because it is an especially accessible example of the role of language in identity performance, being most often achieved through verbal interaction. More broadly, however, this focus emerged through my ethnographically informed, discursive-sociocultural approach to my life and research in mainland China during the period 2008–2019. Specifically, I use spoken data from the interviews which formed part of this process to argue that social practice within related ethnic and/or social groups is best understood in terms of the situated use of sociolinguistic tools and the entailed negotiation of pertinent ideological systems. From this perspective, the ostensibly insurmountable ideological pressures that "Chinese gays" are typically seen to face, and which tend to be attributed to a taken-for-granted and monolithic "Chinese culture", are better interpreted with reference to the complex relationship between language, culture and identity. Thus, I do not assume the right to make broad claims about what Chinese gays do, or to state that they are categorically different from their presumed homogenous Western counterparts. Instead, I discuss what certain individuals say in certain conversations, noting how their performance of identity is often highly individualised, being shaped according to the interactants present and the interactional aims relevant to specific moments of communication. Examining the dangai phenomenon and the web series Word of Honor (WoH), this paper investigates the entanglement of neoliberal management of queer desires, authoritarian regulation of consumer-citizenship, and traffic in various forms of nationalism. Creating an ambient space for queer agency, danmei practices is often regarded as utilizing queer "opacity" as liberatory strategy to outfox the state and societal constraints on non-normative gender and sexuality. Yet the dangai industry in the People's Republic of China (PRC) shows that the economization of queerness finds "opaque" ways to profit through managing risk and anxiety of "missing out" even when a state explicitly censors queer commodities. Situating WoH in the "she economy," the paper demonstrates the ways in which queer potential dangai is cahooted with neoliberal and authoritarian state imperatives for fostering proper gendered consumer-subjects and heteronormative social harmony for national building through embracing the "beautiful, powerful" but "caring and loving" nuan nan ("warm men"). Drawing connections between the newly constructed soft masculinity and other cultural exports such as the "wolf warrior," the paper argues that dangai allows the militant masculinity to be "homonationalized" in service of rebranding Chinese nationalism in a time when Chinese global expansion is fiercely criticized on the global stage. Featured Application: This method can be applied to Chinese news text classification task. (1) Background: Chinese news text is a popular form of media communication, which can be seen everywhere in China. Chinese news text classification is an important direction in natural language processing (NLP). How to use high-quality text classification technology to help humans to efficiently organize and manage the massive amount of web news is an urgent problem to be solved. It is noted that the existing deep learning methods rely on a large-scale tagged corpus for news text classification tasks and this model is poorly interpretable because the size is large. (2) Methods: To solve the above problems, this paper proposes a Chinese news text classification method based on key feature enhancement named KFE-CNN. It can effectively expand the semantic information of key features to enhance sample data and then combine the zero–one binary vector representation to transform text features into binary vectors and input them into CNN model for training and implementation, thus improving the interpretability of the model and effectively compressing the size of the model. (3) Results: The experimental results show that our method can significantly improve the overall performance of the model and the average accuracy and F1-score of the THUCNews subset of the public dataset reached 97.84% and 98%. (4) Conclusions: this fully proved the effectiveness of the KFE-CNN method for the Chinese news text classification task and it also fully demonstrates that key feature enhancement can improve classification performance. This paper investigates the strategies of governance in the language policy 'Chanting the Chinese Classics' (CCC) as deployed by State authorities, schools, and local communities. It highlights the strategy of 'viewing' as a nexus between language policy processes and traditional Chinese governing philosophy. To examine the connections between macro-level language policy and local educational and communicative processes, an ethnography of language policy was conducted at a weekend community school. We argue that language policy governance in Chinese language policy implementation mirrors Confucian philosophy. To further this strategy, State authorities organize nationally televised events at which school children compete in chanting competitions, which serve as exemplars for educators, parents, and students, who are encouraged to memorize vast quantities of classic Chinese literature. Results reveal that the appropriation of the CCC policy by teachers and parents encourages self-government and aligns with language policy ideology. While the CCC policy effectively encourages thousands of children to memorize Chinese Classics, it simultaneously promotes cultural confidence and nationalism. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Discussion of museum text translation in the Chinese context started in 1991, and much attention is still being paid to language errors and ways of producing better translations, revealing the persistence of similar translation problems. This paper addresses the issue in a different way through engaging with museum studies. The museum was introduced into China a century ago by Western missionaries and gradually developed Chinese characteristics, especially in the museum role and museum text style, demonstrating the nature of Chinese museums as translation. Here we compare the museum role and museum text style in China and the West that greatly influence translation but are rarely noticed or touched upon in translation studies, perhaps because it needs to involve museum studies, which is outside the vision of many researchers. Based on the comparison, we propose some guidelines for translators, hoping to make a substantial contribution to the improvement of translation quality. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Oral English competence is crucial for the learners' life and potential professional success. Numerous studies on communicative language teaching were conducted; however, there is a dearth of literature on the application of CLT strategies in Chinese vocational colleges. The objective of this study was to identify CLT techniques that can improve the oral English skills of vocational college students in China. Specifically, it sought to answer the following: (1) What CLT strategies can be adapted for improving the oral proficiency of Chinese vocational college students? (2) What activities can be designed integrating adapted CLT strategies to help enhance Chinese vocational college students' oral proficiency? The study made use of a developmental research design using systematic document analysis as the method. Findings showed that group-oriented CLT strategies like role-play, pair and group work, interviews, information gap activities, etc., and individual-oriented CLT tactics like storytelling, picture description, and opinion-sharing activities can be adapted to improve Chinese vocational college students' oral proficiency. To help enhance Chinese vocational college students' oral proficiency, communicative language activities that integrate these identified CLT strategies were designed as instructors' guide in implementing CLT. Teachers are the primary change agents in educational practice, only by being more aware of what is truly going on in their classrooms can they assist students to achieve their learning goals. The paper addresses the impact of interactive learning technologies, using gamification as an example, on students' motivation, engagement, and academic achievements. The study was conducted among 108 students from the Hangzhou College of Commerce in China. The following research findings were obtained: experimental group students performed better (18.93) than students in the control group (15.49); the Kahoot! game improved motivation (mean = 4.14, SD = 0.77) and engagement (mean = 3.54, SD = 1.05). The resulting data suggested the proposed model's effectiveness in teaching Chinese grammar with the game-based interactive learning technology. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

With the conviction that formulaic expressions in a language are carriers of stable thought patterns of its culture, the paper conducts a thematic analysis of Chinese educational idioms with the goal of exploring the traditional Chinese educational values reflected in the Chinese language use. Altogether, about 100 Chinese idioms that pertain to teaching, learning and parenting are identified from a Chinese Chengyu (idioms) dictionary. Findings of this study challenge the common practice of borrowing Western pedagogical discourses to justify curriculum change initiatives in China, arguing that the traditional Chinese educational discourses should be retained in order to secure a strong cultural identity for young generations. The 20th century witnessed two Chinese translation booms of the Hungarian writer Mór Jókai's work. In order to have a better understanding of Jókai in China, this paper focuses on the Chinese translation of Jókai's work, providing an overview of its history, and offers insights into the socio-cultural context of the translation, the features of Jókai's writing highlighted in translation, and the Chinese understanding of his literary world. It will be shown that the Chinese translation of Jókai's work in the 20th century was almost always dominated by political discourse: in the early 20th century it was "the literature of marginalized nationalities," and in the second half of the century "the literature of socialist countries." While the readers in the earlier period inserted modern China's national consciousness into their interpretation of the writer, who therefore appeared as strangely familiar to them, the readers in the later period were under the influence of socialist ideology, thus distinguishing themselves from the writer, who was regarded as a bourgeois novelist. For the latter, they not only constantly warned themselves of his idealist parochialism but also thought of him as a tragic Rousseau/Owen-style utopian. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: COVID-19 is now a global public health crisis with unprecedented political, economic, and social consequences affecting nations across the world. It also has a profound impact on the mobility of international students. When the COVID-19 was under control in China, and it was spreading dramatically in the United Kingdom, Chinese international students studying in the United Kingdom have been caught in a double bind over whether to return home or not. Objective: This study aims to explore the factors that influenced Chinese international students' choices of return during the COVID-19 pandemic when the COVID-19 was under control in China, while it was spreading dramatically in the United Kingdom. Methods: Taking Chinese international students studying in the United Kingdom as an empirical case, this study used qualitative and quantitative research methods to explore the factors that influenced their choices of return. Based on the Rational Choice Theory and qualitative analysis of text data, this paper constructed the influencing factors model of returning to China. On this basis, we developed a questionnaire and collected data from 1,333 students in late April and early May 2020. Binary Logistic Regression with 95% CI for odds ratio (OR) was used to identify significant factors. Results: The reserve of epidemic prevention supplies (OR = 0.712), transportation expenses (OR = 0.618), and quarantine expenses (OR = 0.702) negatively affected the return choice of overseas students. The supply of daily necessities (OR = 1.495), the anti-epidemic policy of the United Kingdom (OR = 1.684), and the demand for job hunting after graduation (OR = 1.661) had positive effects. Conclusion: The institutional rationality had the biggest promoting effect, replaced development rationality, and became the most important factor for overseas students to return to China during the COVID-19 pandemic. Economic rationality, which has a significant negative effect, is the biggest obstacle to returning home. These conclusions have policy implications for governments' response to the COVID-19 epidemic and improvement of the quality of services for overseas students. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study investigates the use of modal verbs in Chinese-English government press conference (GPC) interpretation. Modal verbs mark the speaker's opinion of or attitude toward the event described in a sentence. Interpreters also use modal verbs to indicate the stances of the source language speakers. The use of modal verbs has been examined in such contexts as research papers, textbooks, and second language learners' output; however, studies that compare differences in modal verbs between source and target languages in the context of interpreting are sparse. The investigation being reported is based on a comparable corpus--an original Chinese GPC and its Englishtranslated version--and a parallel corpus--a translated English GPC and the original English version from the US. The results of the comparable corpus analysis indicate that the frequency of modal verbs in translated English is significantly higher than in original Chinese, in which only 40% of the modal verbs in translated English are consistent with their Chinese counterparts, while others are employed through amplification and value variation. The results of the parallel corpus analysis suggest that the increase of modal verbs in the target texts may help to achieve certain types of pragmatic functions in English. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
