In the late Qing Dynasty, religious periodicals by Western missionaries were made legal in China, and subsequently became an important manner of their missionary cause. Among them, Child’s Paper 小孩月报 (1875–1881) by John Marshall Willoughby Farnham, a Protestant missionary from the United States, endeavoured to convert child readers by carrying children’s stories of moral and emotional education. By concentrating on the educational elements of Child’s Paper, this article inspects how conversion was achieved via the intertextual interpretation of Christian doctrines within these educational elements. Specifically, how the image of little Christians and urchins, respectively, represents salvation and redemption in Christian morals. This article holds that the missionaries’ stress on the authority of Christian discourse in the education of Chinese children makes evident an increasing emphasis on the reformative effects of Christianity on Chinese children. Moreover, the conversion-education efforts by missionaries also construed helping Chinese children gain a cross-cultural perspective on Western religion, and arguably inspired later Chinese intellectuals’ to create newspapers for the purpose of the pre-primary education of Chinese children.

The article presents revised versions of papers presented at the International Milton Symposium that convened in Toronto, Ontario in July 2023 with the panel entitled "Is Paradise Lost a Christian Poem," organized by Richard Strier. Topics discussed include Milton's supposed championship of orthodox Christianity in "Paradise Lost" and how Milton's last poems correlate with Christianity and religion more broadly.

The relation between English language teaching and religion has not been given sufficient attention. Most of the existing explorations of this relationship have tended to reify Western-biased outlooks of this phenomenon, which rightly highlight serious moral dilemmas derived from a focus on Christian evangelization, neo-imperialist dynamics attached to the spread of English, and valid questions about the quality of teaching while proselytizing (e.g. Edge, 2003; Pennycook & Coutand-Marin, 2003). This body of work, however, fails to consider other possible and multiple ways in which religious values come to bear in ELT considering, for instance, non-Western, less globalized, and less diverse contexts such as rural locales in a South American country. This paper presents an alternative outlook, drawing on a narrative study of the current state of ELT in rural Colombia. The analysis uncovers religion-informed metaphors that illuminate how the spiritual values of eight teachers intersect with their professional identities. It suggests that spirituality plays a central role in helping teachers navigate the complex sociocultural conditions of teaching English in rural areas, influencing their roles beyond language instruction.

This article explores how a Midwestern Christian university's doctoral program aligns an authentic assessment process of evaluation, in lieu of comprehensive exams, with the university's tag line to "Shape Lives that Shape the World." The process of assessing "authentically" comes from the belief that evaluating students on skills they enact outside of the classroom will better reflect what they need to master for their chosen field or vocation. The implementation of the benchmark system of assessments was constructed with intentionality to foster and evaluate growth in six program outcomes, with intellectual ability actualized in a real-world context and to model the values reflected in the Christian faith. Although comprehensive exams, or "comps," are a staple of many doctoral programs as a way for students to express their understanding of material, synthesize their learning, and apply that learning to their fields of study, literature reviewed on the benefits/challenges of comps reflects a theme questioning the true assessment value of these exams. The authors share examples of how doctoral students have developed/implemented genuine learning experiences that synthesize both the content and skills they learn and practice in their program, while propelling them forward into the field of scholarship. Through these authentic assessments, doctoral students are shaping not only their lives, but also the lives of those they touch through their doctoral work.

This article examines the NAfME Position Statement on Sacred Music in Schools, which has not been significantly updated since it was first published in 1984. Using genealogical inquiry, the author examines the conditions surrounding the construction of this document in relation to the conditions in the present. Relationships between the history of school prayer, the archive of "Music Educators Journal," and relevant case law are investigated. Postsecularsim is described and explored as a possible theoretical framework for a future revision of the position statement.

In response to the events of the 2018 Annual Meeting of the Religious Education Association, the author reflects on white racial ignorance as the inability to read racialized situations with nuance and to respond appropriately, naming three particular practices of academic conferencing in which her own actions potentially contribute to perpetuating white supremacy. The desire to be professional, to control how one's own actions are perceived, and to be above reproach are named as barriers to disrupting white supremacy, while willingness to be accountable and to continue showing up to do the work are encouraged.

Abstract: Sister Simone Roach, a noted philosopher of caring in nursing, left behind a significant body of theoretical and practical work highlighting the areas of nursing ethics, care/caring, and compassion. This article explores the integration of the moral foundation of agape love in Pauline theology and Roach's human caring in nursing (1992) as the action of agape love. This paper analyses public conflicts over school policies that seek to advance Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) equality. It focuses in particular on conflicts where Muslims, who protest LGBT-inclusive policies, become racialised as other to secular national/Western values. Growing attention has been paid to the secular arguments used by majority and minority religious groups to publicly counter LGBT-inclusive education. In this paper, I contend that neither contemporary arguments for, or against, LGBT-inclusive education are neatly secular, i.e., non-religious, in their public appearance. Introducing a Critical Secular approach, I contend multiple parties in such conflicts work with "strategic" secularisms. Strategic secularisms are prevailing discourses which privatise, and deprivatise (make public), aspects of minority religious and sexual identities on neo-colonial, secular Christian terms. I present a thematic analysis of 149 newspaper articles covering protests largely by Muslims against LGBT-inclusive education outside schools in Birmingham, England. The analysis shows that newspapers foregrounded discourses seeking to privatise (assert private authority over) or deprivatise (publicly surveil) Muslim religiosity. LGBT identities were also variously framed as "beliefs" to be kept private, or an essential part of the public self which must be confessed to be "free". Based on this analysis, I argue public discourse should certainly challenge queer/Muslim and secular/religious dichotomies. But more fundamentally, there is a need to cultivate education publics that refuse strategic secularisms based in neo-colonial, racialised discourses of secular Christian civilisation, and engage the losses created by the privatising and deprivatising of specific forms of minority religious and sexual identity.

This paper presents the findings of a survey exploring people's understandings and experiences of Spiritual Abuse (SA) in a Christian faith context. The online survey was completed by 1591 individuals from the UK, 1002 of whom identified as having experienced SA. Inclusion criteria were: membership of the Christian faith, being or having been, a Church attender or member of a Christian organisation and having heard of the term SA. Participants detailed features of an effective response to disclosures of SA, many of these are directly relevant to counselling and psychotherapy practice. The findings echo calls in previous research for including discussions of religion and faith in training and CPD for counsellors and psychotherapists. Finally, the paper suggests the establishment of a network of counsellors with training and knowledge about SA.

The teacher workforce in the United States is predominantly White, while the student population in public schools is increasingly diverse. This research paper delves into the crucial topic of decentering Whiteness in teacher education preparation programs (TPPs) at Christian universities. By exploring the implications of a predominantly White teaching force and of disparities in student achievement, this study emphasizes the need for greater diversity and inclusivity in teacher education. Drawing from a comprehensive literature review, this paper examines the historical context of the teacher workforce and the impact of desegregation on teacher representation. Furthermore, it explores how biases, prejudices, and privileges inherent in White-centered curricula and pedagogical approaches hinder the effective preparation of teachers to serve diverse student populations. The research highlights the importance of increasing diversity among teaching staff and teacher education candidates, as studies have shown that students benefit significantly from having teachers who share their racial and cultural backgrounds. To address these challenges, the paper explores several potential solutions, such as "grow your own" programs, which invest in and support non-licensed staff from diverse backgrounds, as well as mentorship initiatives and community outreach to foster connections with aspiring teachers of color. Additionally, the paper emphasizes the need to examine licensure standards and standardized testing as potential barriers for students of color entering the teaching profession. Advocating for higher base salaries for teachers, particularly in urban areas, is suggested to attract more diverse individuals to the teaching profession. The role of administration in the recruitment and retention of teachers of color is also emphasized, with a call to create positive and supportive school cultures that value the contributions of all teachers. Christian universities are urged to prioritize social justice issues, cultural diversity, and the amplification of culturally relevant pedagogy to create inclusive and welcoming environments for students of color. This study proposes that Christian universities must engage in critical self-reflection and dismantle White-centered structures and policies within their teacher education programs. By prioritizing diversity, cultural responsiveness, and equity, these institutions can better serve their diverse student populations and equip future educators to thrive in the diverse classrooms of the United States. The paper underscores the importance of these efforts to ensure that the teaching profession reflects the principles of equity and inclusivity that align with the teachings of the Christian faith and prepare educators to be transformative agents of change in the lives of their students.

In this study, we investigated Benson, Donahue, and Erikson's (1993) concept of faith maturity as expressed by institutions of higher education (IHE) claiming religious affiliation. We examined the institutional mission statements of 87 schools affiliated with six Protestant denominations in search of evidence of their intention to develop the Vertical (V) and Horizontal (H) dimensions of faith maturity (Benson, Donahue, & Erikson, 1993). Contrary to this conceptualization of a mature faith, expressions of V and H dimensions were negatively correlated. There was considerable variability in the expression of both V and H dimensions, with Southern Baptist institutions being highest in the V dimension, and United Church of Christ and Lutheran institutions being highest in the H dimension. Although expression of V and H characteristics did not match Benson et al.'s definition of a mature faith, there was some evidence these dimensions corresponded with institutional practices related to relevant student experiences. Overall, the H dimension was emphasized in the mission statements more than the V dimension. These findings have implications for reviewing institutional practices regarding student curricular and co-curricular experiences.
