Some of the largest climatic changes in the Arctic have been observed in Alaska and the surrounding marginal seas. Near-surface air temperature (T2m), precipitation (P), snowfall, and sea ice changes have been previously documented, often in disparate studies. Here, we provide an updated, long-term trend analysis (1957-2021; n 5 65 years) of such parameters in ERA5, NOAA U.S. Climate Gridded Dataset (NClimGrid), NOAA National Centers for Environmental Information (NCEI) Alaska climate division, and composite sea ice products preceding the upcoming Fifth National Climate Assessment (NCA5) and other near-future climate reports. In the past half century, annual T2m has broadly increased across Alaska, and during winter, spring, and autumn on the North Slope and North Panhandle (T2m. 0.508C decade21). Precipitation has also increased across climate divisions and appears strongly interrelated with temperature-sea ice feedbacks on theNorth Slope, specifically with increased (decreased) open water (sea ice extent). Snowfall equivalent (SFE) has decreased in autumn and spring, perhaps aligned with a regime transition of snow to rain, while winter SFE has broadly increased across the state. Sea ice decline and melt-season lengthening also have a pronounced signal around Alaska, with the largest trends in these parameters found in the Beaufort Sea. Alaska's climatic changes are also placed in context against regional and contiguous U.S. air temperature trends and show; 50% greater warming in Alaska relative to the lower-48 states. Permafrost is very sensitive to climate factors, with warm permafrost particularly vulnerable to climate change. This paper aims to provide a detailed case study of climate trends of a high-latitude Alaskan site underlain by warm permafrost based on historical data and predictions from the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 5 (CMIP5). The climate data, including air temperature, precipitation, wind speed, and their annual and seasonal trends from 1950 to 2099, are presented for Bethel, Alaska. The downscaled data are compared with the historical data in the overlap period. Both air and design freezing and thawing indices are calculated using various methods. In comparison, the downscaled model predictions align well with air temperature and wind speed records but not for precipitation, indicating the need for further downscaling at a finer resolution. The historical annual temperature records show a warming rate of 0.40 °C per decade, which is predicted to almost double to 0.78 °C per decade in the 21st century, leading to shorter winters and longer summers. The historical annual precipitation increased by a rate of 14.8 mm per decade from 1950 to 2020, and this trend is predicted to continue but at a slightly lower rate. The wind speed decreased consistently from 1984 to 2020 by 0.9 km/h per decade. However, the CMIP5 predicts that such a trend will diminish, with the mean annual wind speed remaining almost unchanged in this century. The air freezing index exhibits a consistent downtrend from 1950 to 2020, whereas the air thawing index remained flat until 1980 and rose afterward; the CMIP5 predicts that both trends will continue in the 21st century. The design air freezing and thawing indices are sensitive to the assessment periods for both methods. An assessment period shorter than 30 years, e.g., ten years, is recommended to find design indices. It is conservative to use the monthly mean air temperature method for evaluating the design air freezing index and apply the extreme event method for the design thawing index. • Compare downscaled model data at a finer resolution with other models in CMIP5. • Assess the design freezing and thawing indices by two methods with varying periods. • Recommend methods and periods for evaluating design freezing/thawing indices. • Discuss climate change effects on infrastructure, design strategies, future studies. Manifestations of global warming in the Arctic include amplifications of temperature increases and a general increase in precipitation. Although topography complicates the pattern of these changes in regions such as Alaska, the amplified warming and general increase in precipitation are already apparent in observational data. Changes in snow cover are complicated by the opposing effects of warming and increased precipitation. In this study, high-resolution (0.25°) outputs from simulations by the Community Atmosphere Model, version 5, were analyzed for changes in snow under stabilized global warming scenarios of 1.5 °C, 2.0 °C and 3.0 °C. Future changes in snowfall are characterized by a north–south gradient over Alaska and an east–west gradient over Eurasia. Increased snowfall is projected for northern Alaska, northern Canada and Siberia, while milder regions such as southern Alaska and Europe receive less snow in a warmer climate. Overall, the results indicate that the majority of the land area poleward of 55°N will experience a reduction in snow. The approximate threshold of global warming for a statistically significant increase in temperature over 50% of the pan-Arctic land area is 1.5 °C. The corresponding threshold for precipitation is approximately 2.0 °C. The global warming threshold for the loss of high-elevation snow in Alaska is approximately 2.0 °C. The results imply that limiting global warming to the Paris Agreement target is necessary to prevent significant changes in winter climates in Alaska and the Arctic. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

While recent increases in heavy precipitation events in some midlatitude regions are consistent with climate model simulations, evidence of such increases in high latitudes is more tenuous, partly because of data limitations. The present study evaluates historical and future changes in extreme precipitation events in Alaska. Using the ERA5 reanalysis, station data, and output from two downscaled global climate models, we examine precipitation-driven flood events at five diverse locations in Alaska where major historical floods provide benchmarks: Fairbanks (August 1967), Seward (October 1986), Allakaket/Bettles (August 1994), Kivalina (August 2012), and Haines (December 2020). We place these precipitation events into a framework of historical trends and end-of-century (2065–2100) model projections. In all but one of the flood events, the amount of rainfall was the highest on record for the event duration, and precipitation events of this magnitude are generally projected by the models to remain infrequent. All of the cases had subtropical or tropical moisture sources. None of the locations show statistically significant historical trends in the magnitude of extreme precipitation events. However, the frequencies of heavy precipitation events are projected to increase at most of the locations. The frequency of events with 2 year and 5 year historical return intervals is projected to become more frequent, especially in the Interior, and in some cases increase to several times per year. Flooding from extreme precipitation can have major impacts on society in Alaska. Understanding how these extremes may change in the future is needed for better planning under climate change. Data on future changes in extreme precipitation over Alaska from dynamically downscaled output of two global climate models (GFDL and CCSM) were employed in this study. Threshold amounts for duration of the precipitation event (1 h, 1 day, and 30 days) and return intervals (2, 10, and 50 years) are evaluated and further downscaled onto NOAA Atlas 14. For each duration and return interval, the models' fractional changes of threshold amounts are applied to the Atlas 14 estimates to remove the model bias. The threshold amounts for nearly all event durations and return intervals are projected to increase from present (1979–2005) amounts to higher values in later decadal periods (2020–49, 2050–79, and 2080–99), and the percentage increases generally exceed the changes in the mean amounts. The percentage increases are comparable in the various geographical regions of Alaska, but the increases in the actual amounts are greatest in the wetter southeast. Although the downscaled GFDL model shows larger increases than the CCSM model in amounts for nearly all durations and return intervals, both models indicate that convective precipitation will become an increasingly greater fraction of the total precipitation during the warm season. Convective storms produce heavier downpours and become more intense with climate change. Such changes could be even amplified in high-latitudes since the Arctic is warming faster than any other region in the world and subsequently moistening. However, little attention has been paid to the impact of global warming on intense thunderstorms in high latitude continental regions, where they can produce flash flooding or ignite wildfires. We use a model with kilometer-scale grid spacing to simulate Alaska's climate under present and end of the century high emission scenario conditions. The current climate simulation is able to capture the frequency and intensity of hourly precipitation compared to rain gauge data. We apply a precipitation tracking algorithm to identify intense, organized convective systems, which are projected to triple in frequency and extend to the northernmost regions of Alaska under future climate conditions. Peak rainfall rates in the core of the storms will intensify by 37% in line with atmospheric moisture increases. These results could have severe impacts on Alaska's economy and ecology since floods are already the costliest natural disaster in central Alaska and an increasing number of thunderstorms could result in more wildfires ignitions.
