This paper analyzes climatological characteristics and temporal variation of the start and end dates of the rainy season over East Asia using a daily precipitation dataset for the time period 1951-2009. The rainy season is defined by a 5-day rainfall standard, and the regional average time series is constructed by applying the weighted-average method. Results show that the rainy season starts later, ends earlier and lasts shorter from southeast to northwest. In spring, the rainy belt slowly moves northward from 30 to 33°N in China and from 33 to 36°N on the Korean Peninsula and Japanese Islands. From 1951 to 2009, the rainy season generally began earlier in China but later in Korea and Japan, and it ended earlier at latitudes north of 35°N and later south of 35°N. The region-averaged start and end dates of the rainy season in the study region insignificantly advanced, and the duration of the rainy season insignificantly increased from 1951 to 2009. The rainy season duration slightly decreased in the Russian Far East and in northern and western China, and significantly decreased on the Korean Peninsula and the southern Hokkaido Islands, though it obviously increased in the Yangtze--Huaihe River Basins. This paper is dealing with the assessment of climate change scenarios on selected meteorological variables at the Lake Karla watershed, central Greece and it is a contribution to the "HYDROMENTOR" research project. A statistical downscaling method has been employed to estimate monthly precipitation and temperature time series for future climate periods. The outputs of the Canadian Centre for Climate Modeling Analysis Global Circulation Model CGCM3 were applied for three socioeconomic scenarios, namely SRES B 1, SRES A 1B and SRES A2 for the assessment of climate change impact on precipitation and temperature. The methodology has been developed for the historical period 1980-2000 and applied for two future periods 2030-2050 and 2080-2100. Historical and future periods were compared for monthly and annual basis using various statistical criteria such as the mean and standard deviation. This paper presents an analysis of the precipitation climate signal in Europe emerging from a simulation of heterogeneous regional climate models (RCMs) using five observational datasets as the reference for present day climate conditions. Current climate simulations, as well as those from the A2 family of scenarios from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change Special Report on Emissions Scenarios (SRES-A2), from eight RCMs involved in the Prediction of Regional Scenarios and Uncertainties for Defining European Climate Change Risks and Effects (PRUDENCE) project have been cross-compared with data from the Climate Research Unit (CRU), the Global Precipitation Climatology Project (GPCP), the Global Precipitation Climatology Centre (GPCC), the Climate Prediction Center (CPC), and the CPC Merged Analysis of Precipitation (CMAP) databases for Europe. The RCMs used are HIRHAM, the Climate High Resolution Model (CHRM), the Rossby Centre Atmosphere–Ocean (RCAO) model, the GKSS Climate Version of the Local Model (CLM), the Hadley Center RCM (HadRM3H), the Atmospheric Hydrostatic Regional Model (REMO), the Prognostic Model at the Mesoscale (PROMES), and the regional coupled ocean–atmosphere–ice model (RACMO). The comparison shows that the climate signal has to be interpreted depending on the reference data used. Although each validation dataset has its own relative merits and shortcomings, it is known that all of the datasets present variable uncertainties and error sources, which impedes consideration of a single dataset as the only valid representation of actual precipitation. Hence, it is suggested that a robust joint estimate of changes in future precipitation might include the uncertainties of both the RCMs and those of the observational datasets. After accounting for the difference between observed and simulated precipitation in the present climate, the analysis of such joint estimates reveals significant agreement in the climate signal for most of Europe. The Regional Climate Models (RCMs) nested into Global Climate Models (GCMs) are expected to improve the regional climate change scenarios for the European subregions. This paper discusses the RCM experiments for the end of the 21st century using the model Providing REgional Climates for Impact Studies (PRECIS) for the Carpathian Basin. Expected future changes in mean values, distributions and empirical probabilities are analysed for the period 2071?2100 (compared to 1961?1990, as a reference period). Comprehensive monthly weather station databases are the foundation for many gridded climate data products, and they are widely used to characterize regional climate conditions, track climate change and research the impact of climate on natural and managed ecosystems. However, weather station databases are often regional in coverage, and they can have extensive gaps in station coverage over time. They may also contain errors in climate records, station coordinates or elevation. Here, we assemble a comprehensive monthly weather station database for precipitation from multiple reputable data sources. We use digital elevation models and nearby stations to search for inconsistencies in reported station locations and recorded precipitation values. We also estimated missing values in weather station time series using a linear model approach based on interpolated anomaly surfaces. The resulting station records were ranked into ten classes, according to the completeness of records, the reliability of missing value estimations and other criteria. We corrected incomplete or erroneous location and elevation information for 12% of all available station records. A total of 23% of monthly records that had missing values could be estimated with high or moderate confidence. We sub‐sampled our global database of more than 80,000 stations with various spatial filters, so that only the highest quality station for a given area was retained. Our contribution significantly enhances global data coverage compared to individual databases currently available. Even when accepting only the stations within the top two quality ranks in our combined database, and applying the coarsest spatial filter of one station per approximately 1,600 km2, the remaining station count of more than 20,000 stations exceeds the largest alternative database (without a spatial filter applied) by more than 50%. Climate changes in future 21st century China and their uncertainties are evaluated based on 22 climate models from the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 5 (CMIP5). By 2081-2100, the annual mean surface air temperature (SAT) is predicted to increase by 1.3°C±0.7°C, 2.6°C±0.8°C and 5.2°C±1.2°C under the Representative Concentration Pathway (RCP) scenarios RCP2.6, RCP4.5 and RCP8.5, relative to 1986-2005, respectively. The future change in SAT averaged over China increases the most in autumn/winter and the least in spring, while the uncertainty shows little seasonal variation. Spatially, the annual and seasonal mean SAT both show a homogeneous warming pattern across China, with a warming rate increasing from southeastern China to the Tibetan Plateau and northern China, invariant with time and emissions scenario. The associated uncertainty in SAT decreases from northern to southern China. Meanwhile, by 2081-2100, the annual mean precipitation increases by 5%±5%, 8%±6% and 12%±8% under RCP2.6, RCP4.5 and RCP8.5, respectively. The national average precipitation anomaly percentage, largest in spring and smallest in winter, and its uncertainty, largest in winter and smallest in autumn, show visible seasonal variations. Although at a low confidence level, a homogeneous wetting pattern is projected across China on the annual mean scale, with a larger increasing percentage in northern China and a weak drying in southern China in the early 21st century. The associated uncertainty is also generally larger in northern China and smaller in southwestern China. Future climate conditions for the Mediterranean region based on an ensemble of 16 Global Climate Models are expressed and mapped using three approaches, giving special attention to the intermodel uncertainty. (1) The scenarios of mean seasonal temperature and precipitation agree with the projections published previously by other authors. The results show an increase in temperature in all seasons and for all parts of the Mediterranean with good intermodel agreement. Precipitation is projected to decrease in all parts and all seasons (most significantly in summer) except for the northernmost parts in winter. The intermodel agreement for the precipitation changes is lower than for temperature. (2) Changes in drought conditions are represented using the Palmer Drought Severity Index and its intermediate Z-index product. The results indicate a significant decrease in soil moisture in all seasons, with the most significant decrease occurring in summer. The displayed changes exhibit high intermodel agreement. (3) The climate change scenarios are defined in terms of the changes in parameters of the stochastic daily weather generator calibrated with the modeled daily data; the emphasis is put on the parameters, which affect the diurnal and interdiurnal variability in weather series. These scenarios indicate a trend toward more extreme weather in the Mediterranean. Temperature maxima will increase not only because of an overall rise in temperature means, but partly (in some areas) because of increases in temperature variability and daily temperature range. Increased mean daily precipitation sums on wet days occurring in some seasons, and some parts of the Mediterranean may imply higher daily precipitation extremes, and decreased probability of wet day occurrence will imply longer drought spells all across the Mediterranean. Climate change is often related to various adverse effects, among those endangering food security and raising the risk of conflict. But empirical evidence is rather inconclusive so far, particularly about its relationship to (mass) violence. In this letter, we provide a brief review of studies explaining connections between climate change and mass violence and discuss strategies how to properly address the issue in the future, focussing on sub-Sahara Africa (SSA) and climate effects on agricultural production. We conclude that we need better explanations of indirect effects, especially those moderated by the socioeconomic systems, and a better understanding of endogeneity issues, especially of shifts in transmission. This study evaluates the temporal variability of the Antarctic surface mass balance, approximated as precipitation minus evaporation ( P − E), and Southern Ocean precipitation in five global reanalyses during 1989-2009. The datasets consist of the NCEP/U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Atmospheric Model Intercomparison Project 2 reanalysis (NCEP-2), the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) 25-year Reanalysis (JRA-25), ECMWF Interim Re-Analysis (ERA-Interim), NASA Modern Era Retrospective-Analysis for Research and Application (MERRA), and the Climate Forecast System Reanalysis (CFSR). Reanalyses are known to be prone to spurious trends and inhomogeneities caused by changes in the observing system, especially in the data-sparse high southern latitudes. The period of study has seen a dramatic increase in the amount of satellite observations used for data assimilation. The large positive and statistically significant trends in mean Antarctic P − E and mean Southern Ocean precipitation in NCEP-2, JRA-25, and MERRA are found to be largely spurious. The origin of these artifacts varies between reanalyses. Notably, a precipitation jump in MERRA in the late 1990s coincides with the start of the assimilation of radiances from the Advanced Microwave Sounding Unit (AMSU). ERA-Interim and CFSR do not exhibit any significant trends. However, the potential impact of the assimilation of rain-affected radiances in ERA-Interim and inhomogeneities in CFSR pressure fields over Antarctica cast some doubt on the reliability of these two datasets. The authors conclude that ERA-Interim likely offers the most realistic depiction of precipitation changes in high southern latitudes during 1989-2009. The range of the trends in Antarctic P − E among the reanalyses is equivalent to 1 mm of sea level over 21 years, which highlights the improvements still needed in reanalysis simulations to better assess the contribution of Antarctica to sea level rise. This article focuses on some recent changes observed in the Tropics with special emphasis on the African monsoon region using high-resolution gridded precipitation from the Climatic Research Unit (period 1979-2002), outgoing longwave radiation at the top of the atmosphere from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and atmospheric reanalyses from the Climate Prediction Center (NCEP-DOE2, period 1979-2007). The results show a rainfall increase in North Africa since the mid-90s with significant northward migrations of rainfall amounts, i.e. + 1.5° for the 400 mm July to September isohyets, whereas deep convection has significantly increased and shifted northward. The subsidence branch of the northern meridional overturning has also been reinforced and shifted by 1° latitude northward in winter. At larger scale, an unambiguous reorganisation of the circulation with increasing subsidence in high troposphere over the Mediterranean and increasing ascendance in the African Intertropical Convergence Zone in northern summer has been noticed in the meridional cell overturning. After 1993-1994, the migration of the Saharan heat low towards northwest has been more marked (+1° to + 2° in latitude; − 1° to − 2° in longitude), whereas its centre intensified at the peak of the tropical rainy season (+10 gpm thickness in the 700-925 hPa layer). These changes are associated with significant reinforcements of the southwesterly low-level winds and Tropical Easterly jet and with a northward shift of the African Easterly jet. Analyses of Global Circulation Model outputs issued from Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (A1B scenario and from forced experiments on the ARPEGE-climat (Action de Recherche Petite Echelle Grande Echelle) and Atmospheric Global Circulation Model show that at least part of these changes could be due to the recent warming observed in the Mediterranean/Saharan region. Spatial and temporal characteristics of precipitation trends in the Zhujiang River basin, South China, are analyzed. Nonparametric trend tests are applied to daily precipitation data from 192 weather stations between 1961 and 2007 for the following indices: annual, monthly, and daily precipitation; annual and monthly number of rain days and precipitation intensity; annual and monthly maximum precipitation; 5-day maximum precipitation, number of rainstorms with >50 mm day−−1, and peaks over thresholds (90th, 95th, and 99th percentile). The results show that few stations experienced trends in the precipitation indices on an annual basis. On a monthly basis, significant positive and negative trends above the 90%% confidence level appear in all months except December. Trends in the indices of monthly precipitation, rain intensity, rain days, and monthly maximum precipitation show very similar characteristics. They experience the most distinct negative (positive) trends in October (January). A change of the mean wind direction by 50°° from east-southeast to east-northeast explains the downward trend in precipitation in October. Dry October months (months with low precipitation indices) can be observed when the mean wind direction is east-northeast (arid) instead of the prevailing mean wind direction, east-southeast (moist). The former is typical for the East Asian winter monsoon (EAWM). Nearly 90%% of the driest October months can be explained by wind directions typical for the EAWM. The upward trend in precipitation indices in January cannot be explained by changes in large-scale circulation. The analysis of the precipitation indices delivers more detailed information on observed changes than other studies in the same area. In tropical South America, weather and climate are affected by the meridional oscillation of the inter-tropical convergence zone, the Pacific and Atlantic oceans, the Amazon basin, and the Andes Mountains. The dominant mode of the inter-annual climate variability in the tropical Pacific is the El Niño/Southern Oscillation (ENSO) phenomenon. Colombia is among the South American countries that experiences large climate anomalies because of ENSO. However, the hydrologic response in Colombia to a particular ENSO event is highly complex and non-linear. To describe this complex, non-linear hydro-climatic response to large-scale atmospheric forcing in Colombia, a one-way coupled atmospheric-land surface hydrologic modelling approach is implemented whose main components are Colorado State University's Regional Atmospheric Modelling System (RAMS) and the Swedish Hydrologiska Byråns Vattenbalansavdelning-Hydrologic Modelling System (HBV-HMS). RAMS is implemented in a two-nested grid domain for seasonal simulations and a four-nested grid domain for daily simulations. Seasonal simulations emphasize the annual cycle at regional scales, while daily simulations focus on describing the diurnal cycle for specific watersheds. The HBV-HMS is implemented for a specific watershed and used to examine its response at daily time scales. Results of the seasonal simulations reproduce quite well the observed spatial and temporal patterns of the hydro-climatic variables: simulated temperature, pressure, wind velocity, and precipitation distributions show good agreement with observations. Results also show that the 1992 warm phase of ENSO led to a generalized decrease of precipitation along the Andes ranges and that the low lands of Colombia received more precipitation than during the 1989 cold ENSO phase. Similarly, daily-simulated fields show good agreement with observed values. However, the simulated diurnal cycle of precipitation exhibits a temporal phase lag of several hours and simulated precipitation tends to underestimate both the total amount of precipitation and the duration of precipitation events. Despite these discrepancies, the results of the modelling effort clearly demonstrate the ability of this approach to capture the non-linear and complex interactions of large-scale atmospheric forcing and local characteristics as indicated by the satisfactory simulation of stream flow responses for a set of small watersheds.
