This paper presents an analysis of a hundred and one handwritten essays by master students in Informatics. The students reflected on their experiences of working with pen and paper for reading and writing as a mandatory assignment for the duration of a five-week intensive course. Taking an inductive approach, reflexive thematic analysis was used to identify patterns of meaning across the full dataset. The essays elicited insightful student reflections on learning, knowing, and being. One overarching theme, New connections, and four sub-theses were identified: Handwriting as note making, Being present for learning, Freedom to think, and Materiality of reading and writing. This study contributes to an improved understanding of the affordances of paper and laptops in the lecture room, based on a student-centred approach, and reflects on how student perspectives can be implemented during lectures. Submissions can be conventionally longer articles that explore a particular pedagogical issue, assess student learning outcomes, or address other teaching issues related to radical political economics. While questions of pedagogy are crucial in their own right, critical scholars have noted how different pedagogical practices may also lend themselves to different approaches to economics. We also warmly welcome shorter contributions (1,500-3,000 words) that consist of descriptions of classroom exercises, the application of particular pedagogies (e.g., collaborative learning, service learning, active learning, and web-based interactive exercises), or reflective case-studies of teaching practice in radical political economics. This paper contributes to the discourse on the role of critical pedagogy in the U.S. education system. The paper is inspired by the story of a participant from a larger ongoing phenomenological study designed to explore the experience of immigrant teachers in the United States. The participant was selected because she gained prominence in the larger study as the only teacher who reported that because of the injustices she experienced (personally and vicariously) during her K-12 education, she was inspired to pursue teaching as a career. The participant is a Black female teacher who immigrated from England to the United States, and who has taught for approximately 30 years between both countries. Her experience as a student and her work as a teacher, are reflective of, and analyzed through the lens of critical pedagogy. The participant's experience was carefully and respectfully crafted into a profile that produced three major themes: (1) Racial injustice as an altruistic inspiration to becoming a teacher; (2) the work of the immigrant Teacher of Color in the United States necessarily involves actuating an inclusive and racial justice curricular agenda; and (3) what it means to be an immigrant Educator of Color in the United States is to conceptualize your practice as a deliberate political act that counteracts racial injustice and inequity. Philosophy for Children is a pedagogical approach practised worldwide. Although well known for its contribution to democratic teaching and learning its contribution to critical research is relatively unknown. In this paper we present the use of a Community of Enquiry (CoE), as conceptualised in Philosophy for Children, as a qualitative research method that foregrounds participant voice. Framed through Freirean critical pedagogy and social transformation, we present research undertaken with primary pre-service teachers in England, exploring their emerging teacher identity, and detail the method of how a CoE was enabled. We conclude and advocate that a CoE aligns with a research axiology concomitant with ethical critical practices and argue for an environment that enables the researcher, and participants, to generate data collaboratively and collectively through democratic dialogue. Students diagnosed with mental illness are progressively composing the makeup of our universities' student bodies. With more "mad" students making their way into the academy, this has encouraged many in Mad Studies to consider the challenges they confront in pursuing post-secondary studies. The purpose of this structured literature review of the Mad Studies canon is to tease out themes apropos to the education of adults through a critical pedagogy lens. Themal categories were organized around: Mad Studies course development and curriculum, popular culture and arts-based education, contesting the university seeped in sanism, surveilling mad bodies/minds, the university demands resilience, the politics of course instruction/teaching, mad disclosures, educational policy, and threat and risk management. Theatre and performance have long been used to platform, challenge, and agitate for social justice. Using contemporary work focussed on marginalised communities can facilitate and broaden the reach and understanding of such work. This paper reports on a case study using It's A MotherF**King Pleasure (FlawBored, 2023) in a formal higher education setting, examining what can be gained in the use(s) of such work. In moving through arguments advocating for working with 'fringe' artists and their work, the benefits of conscious enaction of critical pedagogy and the highlighting of the potential benefits to students-- and educators--in their understanding of social justice, this paper argues for the inclusion of those new artists making work now, into the teaching material. The case study emphasises the importance and ability of creating a space in higher education (and beyond) for open and engaged inquiry into deeply held viewpoints, with suggestions of how to enact it, offered. The objective of this paper is to highlight the potential contributions of the post-critical perspective to social movement learning (SML). To achieve this aim, the study employs a thematic analysis of findings derived from a systematic literature review on deconsumption (an umbrella term understood as rejection of consumerism together with materialistic values prevalent in the Western consumer societies, encompassing movements such as voluntary simplicity, freeganism etc.). Identified themes are presented within the framework of post-critical pedagogy and analysed through its lens. This approach allows the researcher to demonstrate the implications and insights of the post-critical perspective in SML and adult education. This article argues that integrating the post-critical perspective into SML can yield a novel understanding of pertinent issues within this subfield. This paper presents a pedagogy of anachronism where learning occurs through a misfit between theory and practice. It was developed and tested in a class taught from 2016 to 2019, where students repeated Kevin Lynch's original 1960 experiment on cognitive mapping in a location much smaller in scale and with a very different social composition from the cities that Lynch analyzed. The deliberate misfit transformed a method designed to understand user perception into the very problem itself, provoking students to ask important epistemological questions and recognize the situatedness of theory. A pedagogy of anachronism resists the uncritical instrumentalization of canonical ideas and trains students to think deeply about the normative and epistemological basis of design/planning practice. This paper challenges readers to examine how the "halls of power" within the psychoanalytic enterprise, and our own institutions mobilize our hatred and 'white rage' often subtly and imperceptibly towards non-whites. It raises the question: Are the marginalized and all non-white worlds also represented in our theories and training programs? He argues for a critical pedagogy which begins by our own racial self-examination and interrogation of our collective "implicated subjectivities" in the inhuman treatment of our patients, supervisees and colleagues – especially non-whites but whites as well because their unexamined racism dehumanizes even them. Using his own lived experiences in these psychoanalytic halls of power over 20 years, the author questions our tendency for universalizing, including self psychology's central concept of empathy, especially as it is practiced. How shall we redress past and contemporary iniquities in order to make reparations, create a more just and inclusive psychoanalytic theory and practice and what might that look like? This paper constitutes the introduction to the special issue of Pedagogy, Culture & Society, titled 'Intercultural Communication Pedagogy and the Question of the Other', which emerged from the launch event of the Institute for Language Education at the Moray House School of Education and Sport, University of Edinburgh. It proceeds from the arguments that intercultural communication pedagogy has clung too long to essentialist competency models that erase all differences, and that to counteract their effects one needs to pay greater attention to the most pre-original and non-synthesisable ethical relation between self and other. To do so, the paper draws on debates that have problematised competency models, discussing in depth two interrelated central themes that these debates have tended to overlook. The first theme refers to the possibility of the oppressed turning into oppressors in their efforts to free themselves from the unified notion of culture that competency models support. The second theme refers to the emancipatory mission of critical pedagogy which, despite its best intentions, operates within a normative framework from which self and other become the same.
