Graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) exhibits unique properties as a support for single-atom heterogeneous catalysts (SAHCs). Understanding how the synthesis method, carrier properties, and metal identity impact the isolation of metal centers is essential to guide their design. This study compares the effectiveness of direct and postsynthetic routes to prepare SAHCs by incorporating palladium, silver, iridium, platinum, or gold in g-C3N4 of distinct morphology (bulk, mesoporous and exfoliated). The speciation (single atoms, dimers, clusters, or nanoparticles), distribution, and oxidation state of the supported metals are characterized by multiple techniques including extensive use of aberration-corrected electron microscopy. SAHCs are most readily attained via direct approaches applying copolymerizable metal precursors and employing high surface area carriers. In contrast, although post-synthetic routes enable improved control over the metal loading, nanoparticle formation is more prevalent. Comparison of the carrier morphologies also points toward the involvement of defects in stabilizing single atoms. The distinct metal dispersions are rationalized by density functional theory and kinetic Monte Carlo simulations, highlighting the interplay between the adsorption energetics and diffusion kinetics. Evaluation in the continuous three-phase semihydrogenation of 1-hexyne identifies controlling the metal-carrier interaction and exposing the metal sites at the surface layer as key challenges in designing efficient SAHCs. Site modification and isolation through selective poisoning comprise an effective strategy to enhance the selectivity of palladium catalysts in the partial hydrogenation of triple bonds in acetylenic compounds. The recent emergence of supported hybrid materials matching the stereo- and chemoselectivity of the classical Lindlar catalyst holds promise to revolutionize palladium-catalyzed hydrogenations, and will benefit from an in-depth understanding of these new materials. In this work, we compare the performance of bare, lead-poisoned, and ligand-modified palladium catalysts in the hydrogenation of diverse alkynes. Catalytic tests, conducted in a continuous-flow three-phase reactor, coupled with theoretical calculations and characterization methods, enable elucidation of the structural origins of the observed selectivity patterns. Distinctions in the catalytic performance are correlated with the relative accessibility of the active site to the organic substrate, and with the adsorption configuration and strength, depending on the ensemble size and surface potentials. This explains the role of the ligand in the colloidally prepared catalysts in promoting superior performance in the hydrogenation of terminal and internal alkynes, and short-chain alkynols. In contrast, the greater accessibility of the active surface of the Pd-Pb alloy and the absence of polar groups are shown to be favorable in the conversion of alkynes containing long aliphatic chains and/or ketone groups. The gas-phase partial hydrogenation of propyne was investigated over supported Ag nanoparticles (2-20 nm in diameter) prepared by using different deposition methods, activation conditions, loadings, and carriers. The excellent selectivities to propene attained over the catalysts, exceeding 90 %, are independent of the particle size but the activity is maximal over approximately 4.5 nm Ag particles. Certain kinetic fingerprints of Ag, such as the positive dependence on the alkyne pressure, the relatively low reaction order in H2, and the low apparent activation energy, deviate from those of conventional hydrogenation metals such as Pd and Ni, questioning the applicability of the classical Horiuti-Polanyi scheme. Periodic dispersion-corrected density functional theory (DFT-D) calculations and microkinetic analysis demonstrate the occurrence of an associative mechanism, which features the activation of H2 on the adsorbed propyne at structural step sites. By using the atomistic Wulff model, the number of B5 sites available on the Ag nanoparticles was estimated to be maximal in the size range of 3.5-4.7 nm. The rate of propene production correlates with the density of B5 sites, which suggests that the latter are potential active centers for the reaction. This alternative pathway broadens the mechanistic diversity of hydrogenation reactions over metal surfaces and opens new directions for understanding metals that do not readily activate H2. Nanostructuring metal catalysts has been demonstrated as an attractive strategy to enable selective hydrodehalogenation of CH 2 X 2 (X = Cl, Br) to CH 3 X, but active phase size effects of promising metals and the role of the halogen are still poorly understood. Herein, the impact of these parameters on performance (activity, selectivity, and stability) is systematically assessed by employing a platform of N–doped carbon–supported metal nanostructures (Ir, Pt, Ru, and Ni), ranging from single atoms (SA) with defined coordination environment to nanoparticles (NP) of ca. 3.0 nm. Catalytic tests reveal that when compared to single atoms, highest reaction rates are attained over NP–based systems, which also exhibit improved stability ranking as Ir ≈ Pt > Ru ≫ Ni, independent of the halogen. The product distribution was markedly affected by the nanostructure and speciation of the active center as well as the dihalomethane type. Specifically, CH 3 Cl is the main reaction product over SA in hydrodechlorination, achieving an exceptional selectivity over Ir (up to 95%). In contrast, NP mainly generated CH 4 or coke. Comparable patterns were observed in hydrodebromination, except over Ru, which exhibited an inverse structure–selectivity trend. Density Functional Theory simulations shed light on the speciation of the active phase and identified the adsorption and dissociation energies of CH 2 X 2 and H 2 as descriptors for catalytic reactivity.
