Overgrazing and continuous grazing give rise to considerable decreases in aboveground biomass and soil organic carbon. Grazing exclusion (GE) has been determined to be an effective approach to enhance the soil carbon storage of arid and semiarid grasslands in China. However, at present, there is no consensus regarding whether GE affects soil carbon, especially in desert regions with differing degrees of degradation. This paper examines the changes in soil organic carbon density (SOCD), easily oxidizable carbon density (EOCD) and microbial biomass carbon density (MBCD) in slightly degraded desert (SD) and moderately degraded desert (MD) after different periods of GE. The results indicate that GE did not significantly alter SOCD in SD, but GE caused SOCD to decrease by 12.7–25.6% in 0–20-cm soil depth in MD. EOCD and MBCD in all soil surface layers of SD first decreased and subsequently increased with increasing GE duration, whereas in the 0–20-cm soil layer of MD, these values increased linearly with increasing GE duration and aboveground biomass. Therefore, we proposed that carbon density was significantly different among distinctly degraded deserts, and we should consider the degree of degradation and the condition of desert regions before implementing GE. Oasification is a complex oasis expansion and ecological processes caused by climate changes and human activities under available water supply in arid and semiarid regions. The process can effectively improve soil productivity, vegetation cover, and biomass production in fighting against land degradation, such as desertification and soil erosion. However, the significance of oasification has not yet reached the general cognition compared to desertification, which is regarded as one of the most severe global eco-environmental issues. This paper identifies desertification and oasification processes and their perspectives in cognition. The implication of oasification in combating desertification and controlling land degradation is emphasized by the justification between desertification and oasification processes. As opposite process of desertification, the oasification is an unable evasive process that can provide positive environmental effects in the control of desertification, ecological restoration, and land rehabilitation. According to the interaction of climatic variations and human activities, the oasification processes is classified into six main forms: natural oasis evolution process, engineering forest construction, conversion of natural landforms into farmlands, urban encroachment, constructed environments, and coupled ecosystems. These processes gradually modify the productive capacity of soils, increase vegetation cover for restoring degraded lands, and improve the living environment for human settlement and sustainability of an oasis ecosystem. Moreover, an overview of oasification research is detailed, and Northwest China as an example is used to illustrate the progress of the oasification research in recent decades. Currently, the oasification process and its mechanistic research still remain less concern in the arid and semiarid regions. Based on the analysis of major-element compositions of detrital sediments from the Taklamakan Desert of northwestern China, this paper aims to study chemical weathering in a hyper-arid desert environment. The major-element compositions are basically similar to the Upper Continental Crust but show a clear enrichment of CaO and depletion of Na2O and K2O, indicating the enrichment of carbonates and the decomposition of sodium and potassium silicates. The indexes of chemical alteration are relatively low and correlate negatively with the content of Na2O, implying that the degree of chemical weathering is weak and mainly controlled by the weathering of sodium feldspars. An A-CN-K model demonstrates that the detrital sediments from the Taklamakan Desert have a high homogeneity in the trend of chemical weathering. They are weathered less than sands and soil in many other Chinese deserts, and also less than similar detrital sediments in many other countries. This evidence suggests a low degree of mineralogical maturity in the Taklamakan Desert. The aeolian sediments of different ages have similar indexes of chemical weathering, suggesting that the degree of chemical weathering was consistent in the Taklamakan Desert throughout the period of aeolian deposition. The low degree of chemical weathering is caused principally by extreme aridity, rapid rejuvenation of detrital sediments associated with strong aeolian processes, and an intensive input of fluvial deposits, as well as a lack of vegetation. Using the combined methods of digital image processing of remote sensing data, a Geographical Information System (GIS) and analysis of historical books and maps, this paper aims to contribute to a better understanding of the processes and mechanisms of land-use and land-cover changes and hydrological variations during the last 2000 years in a hyper-arid environment. The southern and eastern Taklamakan Desert, one of the driest and ecologically most sensitive regions in China and characterized by a long history of human settlements, was chosen as the study area. A hydrological connection between the Keriya and Niya rivers in former times was recognized for the first time using satellite imagery. After transferring the notes and maps of historical times into a simplified modern map, it shows that the Lop Nuer decreased in size from a large lake in the Han Dynasty (206 BC to AD 220) to a much smaller one in the Qing Dynasty (AD 1644–1911). Areas settled in former times differ morphologically from the dune landscape in satellite imagery because of flat relief along dried river courses. A review of archaeological literature reinforces the fact that in the lower reaches of the Keriya and Niya rivers, in the interior of the Taklamakan Desert, irrigated agriculture was widely practised from ca. 200 BC to ca. AD 500. A possible climatic change toward drier conditions at ca. AD 500 is suggested as the cause of the abandonment of the cities in the desert and for the initial drying of the formerly large Lop Nuer Lake. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The atmospheric temperature profiles (ATPs) retrieved through the geostationary Interferometric Infrared Sounder (GIIRS) onboard the FY-4A satellite (GIIRS/FY-4A) can effectively fill the gap of the scarce conventional sounding data in the Taklimakan Desert (TD), the second largest desert in the world, with an area of 330,000 square kilometers. In this study, we take the experimental radiosonde observations (RAOB) from one RAOB station in the hinterland of TD and seven conventional radiosondes in the oasis region around the desert as the true values and analyze the bias distribution characteristics of GIIRS/FY-4A ATPs with quality control (QC) flags 0 or 1 for this region. In addition, a bias comparison is made with GIIRS/FY-4A ATPs, and the fifth generation ECMWF atmospheric reanalysis of the global climate (ERA5) ATPs. The results show that (1) Missing measurements in GIIRS/FY-4A ATPs are the most frequent in the near-surface layer, accounting for more than 80% of all the retrieved grid points. The averaged total proportion of GIIRS/FY-4A ATPs with QC marks 0 or 1 is about 33.06%. (2) The root mean square error (RMSE) of GIIRS/FY-4A ATPs is less than 3 K, smaller than that of ERA5 ATPs. The RMSE of ERA5 ATPs can exceed 10 K in the desert hinterland. The absolute mean biases of GIIRS/FY-4A ATPs and ERA5 ATPs are, respectively, smaller than 3 K and 2 K, the former being slightly larger. The correlation coefficients of GIIRS/FY-4A ATPs with ERA5 ATPs and RAOB ATPs are higher than 0.98 and 0.99, respectively, and the correlation between GIIRS/FY-4A ATPs and RAOB ATPs is inferior to the latter. (3) The overall atmospheric temperature retrieved by GIIRS/FY-4A is 0.08 K higher than the temperature of RAOB, on average, while the overall temperature from ERA5 is 0.13 K lower than that of RAOB, indicating that the temperature profile obtained by integrating GIIRS/FY-4A ATPs and ERA5 ATPs may be much closer to RAOB ATPs. (4) The probability density of the GIIRS/FY-4A ATP biases in the TD region generally follows the Gaussian distribution so that it can be effectively assimilated in the 3-D variational assimilation modules. The probability density distribution characteristics of the GIIRS/FY-4A ATP biases in the desert hinterland and oasis are not much different. However, due to the fusion analysis of the relatively rich multi-source conventional observation data from the oasis stations, the probability density of ERA5 ATPs biases at the oasis stations is nearer to Gaussian distribution than that of the GIIRS/FY-4A ATPs. In the desert hinterland, where conventional observation is not enough, the probability density distributions of the ATPs biases from ERA5 and GIIRS/FY-4A are alike. It was previously reported that afforestation in the desert can help improve soil texture, carbon accumulation, and nutrient status. However, the effects of afforestation on soil microbial composition, diversity, and microbial interactions with soil physicochemical properties have been rarely evaluated quantitatively. Using the method of space-for-time substitutions, we assessed the development and determinants of topsoil bacterial and fungal communities over nearly 40 years of successive afforestation by aerial sowing in Tengger Desert, China. The results showed that afforestation by aerial sowing comprised a considerable proportion of Chloroflexi and Acidobacteria in the bacterial community in addition to the ubiquitous phyla found in desert but had fewer effects on the dominant phyla of the fungal community. At the phylum level, the bacterial community was clearly clustered into two groups. However, it was difficult to differentiate the constituents of the fungal community based on principal coordinate analysis. The richness of the bacterial and fungal communities was significantly higher after five years than at zero years and three years. Additionally, the bacterial community varied parabolically and reached its largest size at twenty years, while the fungal community increased exponentially. Soil physicochemical properties were found to have divergent effects on the abundance and diversity of bacterial and fungal communities, among which salt- and carbon-associated properties (e.g., electrical conductivity, calcium, magnesium, total carbon, and organic carbon) were closely related with the abundance of bacterial-dominant phyla and the diversity of bacteria and fungi, but nutrient-associated properties (e.g., total phosphorus and available phosphorus) were not. The results indicate that afforestation through the salt secretions of plants leaves and carbon inputs from litter promote the development of topsoil bacterial and fungal communities in the desert. In this paper, we examine the Early to Middle Holocene evolution of a prominent group of ground-water fed lakes in the southeastern hinterland of the Badain Jaran Desert (BJD) of northwest China. Specifically, we describe a sediment profile record from the Taoerlegetu (TR) palaeolake basin using multiple proxies of total organic carbon (TOC), total nitrogen (TN), C/N ratio, δ13C org , grain size and mineral composition based on a well-dated trench profile. As C/N values suggest that sedimentary organic matter mainly originated from aquatic plants, δ13Corg values can be used as a qualitative proxy for water level because aquatic plants in different biotopes (water depth) have different δ13C values. Our results show that from 10.9 to 9.1 cal kyr B.P., water level rose slowly, and aquatic macrophytes occupied the lake basin. From 9.1 to 5.5 cal kyr B.P., water level reached an even higher level and phytoplankton replaced macrophytes as the major contributor to organic matter. The humid episode of the lakes in the hinterland of the BJD in the early Holocene might be related to the increased groundwater supply from the northeast region of the Tibet Plateau. These findings are consistent with earlier studies of lacustrine and peat sediments found in periphery of the modern lake group, which indicate that their geographic extent may have been larger in the past. A relative drought period recorded in the studied succession from 8.5 to 8.0 cal kyr B.P. marks an interval of reduced ground-water transport from the Tibet Plateau. Soil erosion is a global environmental problem. The rapid monitoring of the coverage changes in and spatial patterns of photosynthetic vegetation (PV) and non-photosynthetic vegetation (NPV) at regional scales can help improve the accuracy of soil erosion evaluations. Three deep learning semantic segmentation models, DeepLabV3+, PSPNet, and U-Net, are often used to extract features from unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) images; however, their extraction processes are highly dependent on the assignment of massive data labels, which greatly limits their applicability. At the same time, numerous shadows are present in UAV images. It is not clear whether the shaded features can be further classified, nor how much accuracy can be achieved. This study took the Mu Us Desert in northern China as an example with which to explore the feasibility and efficiency of shadow-sensitive PV/NPV classification using the three models. Using the object-oriented classification technique alongside manual correction, 728 labels were produced for deep learning PV/NVP semantic segmentation. ResNet 50 was selected as the backbone network with which to train the sample data. Three models were used in the study; the overall accuracy (OA), the kappa coefficient, and the orthogonal statistic were applied to evaluate their accuracy and efficiency. The results showed that, for six characteristics, the three models achieved OAs of 88.3–91.9% and kappa coefficients of 0.81–0.87. The DeepLabV3+ model was superior, and its accuracy for PV and bare soil (BS) under light conditions exceeded 95%; for the three categories of PV/NPV/BS, it achieved an OA of 94.3% and a kappa coefficient of 0.90, performing slightly better (by ~2.6% (OA) and ~0.05 (kappa coefficient)) than the other two models. The DeepLabV3+ model and corresponding labels were tested in other sites for the same types of features: it achieved OAs of 93.9–95.9% and kappa coefficients of 0.88–0.92. Compared with traditional machine learning methods, such as random forest, the proposed method not only offers a marked improvement in classification accuracy but also realizes the semiautomatic extraction of PV/NPV areas. Based on the meteorological observation data of air temperature, surface temperature and albedo data retrieved from remote sensing images inside and outside the photovoltaic station, as well as the measured soil moisture content and bulk density at different locations of the photovoltaic power station in 2019, the impact of large-scale desert photovoltaic power plants on climate and environment was studied. The results show that air temperature, surface temperature and albedo inside the photovoltaic power station are lower than those outside the station, which are obvious in winter and not obvious in summer. Therefore, the photovoltaic power station is a cold source and an energy sink. The soil moisture content under and between the photovoltaic arrays is larger than other sampling points, and the soil bulk density gradually decreases with the distance from the center of the photovoltaic power station. Dark septate endophytes (DSEs) usually colonize plant roots, especially in stress environments. However, their relationship with plants ranges from beneficial to harmful and has remained largely uncharacterized. In the present study, 14 DSE species grouped into 11 genera were isolated from the roots of a desert plant, Artemisia ordosica, which is widely distributed in northwest China. Three dominant DSE species—Paraphoma chrysanthemicola (Pc), Alternaria chartarum (Ac), and Acrocalymma vagum (Av)—were selected and tested for their resistance to drought in vitro. Furthermore, we characterized the responses of A. ordosica under drought conditions in relation to the presence of these DSEs following inoculation. The results showed that all three strains grew well under in vitro drought stress, and the biomass of Ac and Av was significantly higher than that of the unstressed control. The effects of DSE inoculation on the growth of A. ordosica under drought stress varied according to the different DSE species but were generally beneficial. Under drought stress, Av and Pc promoted plant growth, antioxidant enzyme activity, and root development of the hosts. The Ac strain conferred obvious positive effects on the antioxidant enzyme activity of the hosts. The Taklimakan desert is known as the largest dunefield in China and also as the world's second largest shifting sand desert. The Tarim Desert Highway, which is the first highway to cross the Taklimakan desert, was built for the purpose of oil and gas resources extraction in the Tarim area, as well as for the development of the southern area of the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. Shelterbelts have been planted along the highway to prevent shifting sand from burying the road. This paper analyzes the variations of moisture and salinity of the unirrigated desert soil under natural conditions in the center of Taklimakan Desert. A number of important findings indicating the moisture and salinity of the soil at capillary saturation zone were determined by the groundwater and related to the evaporation on the top. Salinity could be affected by vegetation, which was different from moisture in the soil. Meanwhile, clay layer played an important role in water preservation in the soil, which was also beneficial to the accumulation of salinity in soil. Compared with clay layer, vegetation was a decisive factor for the gathering of salinity. The findings were significant for reasonable adjustment of irrigation in the shelterbelts for the further development of the Tarim Desert Highway. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: This paper reviews our current understanding of Quaternary climate and landscape changes in the desert areas of northern China, a key portion of the middle-latitude drylands on Earth. Combining earlier studies with our recent research and experience, we offer a comprehensive picture of the state of Chinese deserts during the Quaternary and, in the interest of enhancing future research, identify knowledge gaps and areas of uncertainty. Lacustrine deposits found over an area ranging from China’s western Taklamakan Desert to the eastern Hunshandake Sandy Lands suggest that extensive lakes occurred in China’s deserts during the Pleistocene. Analysis of digital elevation models from SRTM (Shuttle Radar Topography Mission) data supports this interpretation and shows the significant extent of these former lakes. New estimates of mean annual evaporation of ca. 1000 mm from lake surfaces and ca. 100 mm from land surfaces, confirms that local and regional rainfall is critical for maintenance of desert lakes in this temperate zone, especially during intervals when the mean annual rainfall is more than 100 mm. Rapid shifts between sand seas and lakes in geologically and environmentally diverse settings suggest that the drylands of China are very sensitive ephemeral systems, and not long-lasting as previously thought. Available chronologies suggest that there were large lakes in the western Taklamakan Desert and the Chadamu Basin during MIS (Marine Isotope Stage) 3, at ∼30 ka, probably related to a period of strong influence of northern hemispheric westerly winds. Channels and elevation models revealed by SRTM data and remains of lacustrine sediments also indicate that there was a large lake in the Hunshandake Sandy Lands in the eastern portion of the desert belt during the Quaternary. There is significant evidence that during the middle Holocene strong summer monsoons led to a relatively large increase in moisture availability in the entire desert belt of northern China. Lacustrine records from the Badain Jaran Desert in western Inner Mongolia suggest that it was generally dry before 10 cal ka, becoming wetter from 10 to 4 cal ka, and dry again afterwards. Study of palaeosols widely occurring in dune stratigraphy in the eastern portion of the desert belt, suggests that there was a period of wet and warm climate in this region during the mid-Holocene Optimum, at a minimum between 6 ka and 4 ka, but possibly lasting longer. Recent observations dealing with the generation and transport of dust from Central Asia indicate that the causal relationship between sand seas and loess sequences is not as close as previously assumed. These results suggest that there is an urgent need to examine whether the frequency and amplitude of climatic variation in Chinese deserts are somehow similar to that having occurred in the Sahara Desert of North Africa. Deserts in northern China were also important focal regions for Neolithic cultures during intervals when environmental conditions supported a denser vegetative cover. There is evidence that some areas of woody vegetation to the west of Badain Jaran Desert were deforested by humans by ca. 4000 yr B P, although it is still debatable whether humans have had a significant impact in other areas at that time. Abstract: Based on samples taken from four large sand seas of northern China, this paper first provides basic data about the concentrations and chemistries of soluble salts in deserts of northern China and then discusses the origins and parameters triggering geographical variations. The total concentration of soluble salts in the aeolian sands of four large sand seas in northern China ranges between 0.14‰ and 1.32‰, with the pH of the soluble salts solution (mixing ratio of sand and water 1:5) changing between 8.4 and 9.6, confirming alkaline soil conditions in these regions. Sodium chloride and bicarbonate are the dominant salts occurring as soluble salts in the aeolian deposits of these sand seas. The geographical changes of soluble salts'' concentration display a clear correlation with regional climatic parameters, i.e., precipitation and temperature. The domination of sedimentation of soluble salts in the aeolian sands deposited via atmospheric processes is discussed, which are heavily associated with dry deposition. The mean percentages of Na and Cl, derived from dry depositions, are estimated to be >90% in both Badain Jaran and Taklamakan deserts. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: In recent years, the Populus euphratica Oliv population has shown signs of degradation that are hypothesized to reflect decreases in surface water. Based on the analysis of tree-ring data and field inventories for P. euphratica populations in 14 study sites in the lower reach of the Heihe River, China, this paper assesses (1) age–height growth relationships, (2) tree growth levels, and (3) effects of stand type, soil type, water condition and river runoff on rate of change in tree height growth. There is a close relationship between tree height and age in P. euphratica, but the extent of this relationship varies at different growth stages and at different locations in the lower reach of the Heihe River. In this area, most of the natural P. euphratica forest is currently at a suppressed growth level with an unfavorable growing condition. The height growth in particular appears to be quite sensitive and variable in terms influences of internal and external factors over the tree lifespan, with changes in the water–soil conditions, wind action and gravity being particularly detrimental. In general, tree height growth rate was higher when growth conditions were favorable than in poorer growth conditions; however, the actual differences in growth between trees in the same area was more variable under good growth conditions and could be less variable for trees growing in poor conditions. In addition, the correlation between P. euphratica height growth and river runoff was not significant. These findings should be helpful in determining forestry management measures for the sustainable development and maintenance of natural P. euphratica forests in this study area and for overall environmental evaluation and monitoring of ecosystems of inland river basins of arid areas. Abstract: Knowledge about changes of regional carbon density during late Quaternary is of great significance for understanding regional and global carbon cycles. Taking the Hunshandake Sandy Land, located in eastern Inner Mongolia of China as an example, this paper aims to reconstruct Late Quaternary environmental changes, and then to discuss the fluctuations of organic carbon density and storage in the desert environment of northern China. The study area with a mean annual precipitation ca. 300 mm is characterized by the occurrence of fixed and semi-fixed sand dunes reaching a maximal height of 30 m. The research methods included field observations, examinations of grain sizes, as well as carbon and calcium carbonate contents of the sediment samples. The chronology is based on Optically Stimulated Luminescence (OSL) dating and radiocarbon analyses. This work reveals that the organic carbon density in the surface layer of the Hunshandake Sandy Land changed between at least 2500 g/m2 during the Holocene Climatic Optimum and 1500 g/m2 when aeolian processes dominate. The dune construction was restricted by periglacial processes during the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM). The Holocene Climatic Optimum, indicated by extensive formation of kastanozem soils, occurred between 5 ka and 3 ka in the study area. Although desertification might cause a 40% loss of total organic carbon storage within several dozen of years in the study area, a considerable amount of this carbon was re-deposited in the regions of downwind directions. Two new species of Dzhanokmenia Kostjukov (Hymenoptera: Eulophidae: Tetrastichinae), D. stefaniolae Li, Wang & Hu, sp. nov. and D. yuxuannis Li, Wang & Hu, sp. nov., are described and illustrated from Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region, China. D. stefaniolae was reared from stem-galls made by Stefaniola sp. (Diptera: Cecidomyiidae) on black saxaul, Haloxylon ammodendron (Chenopodiaceae); D. yuxuannis was collected by sweeping from both black saxaul and white saxaul, H. persicum, in Beishawo Desert near Fukang. This study assessed the influence of rhizocompartment types (i.e., root, rhizosphere soil, root‐zone soil, and intershrub bulk soil) on the diversity of soil microbial communities under desert leguminous plant shrubs. Moreover, the influence and variations of soil physicochemical factors in interactions among leguminous plants, soil, and microbes were investigated. Both 16S rRNA high‐throughput genome sequencing and conventional soil physicochemical index determination were used to characterize both the bacterial diversity and soil physicochemical properties in the rhizocompartments of two Hedysarum species (Hedysarum mongolicum and Hedysarum scoparium) in the Mu Us Desert of China. All nutrient indices (except total phosphorus and available phosphorus) in rhizosphere soil were uniformly higher than those in both root‐zone soil and intershrub bulk soil (p <.05). The bacterial community diversity in the root, undershrub soil (i.e., rhizosphere and root zone), and intershrub bulk soil also showed significant differences (p <.05). The bacterial community in the root is mainly composed of Proteobacteria, Actinobacteria, Bacteroidetes, Tenericutes, and Chloroflexi, among which bacteria of the Proteobacteria genus are dominant. Root endophyte and rhizosphere soil microbiomes were mainly influenced by soil nutrients, while bacterial communities in root‐zone soil and intershrub bulk soil were mainly influenced by soil pH and NH4+‐N. The rhizocompartment types of desert leguminous plants impose a significant influence on the diversity of soil microbial communities. According to these findings, nitrogen‐fixing rhizobia can co‐exist with nonsymbiotic endophytes in the roots of desert leguminous plants. Moreover, plants have a hierarchical filtering and enriching effect on beneficial microbes in soil via rhizocompartments. Soil physicochemical factors have a significant influence on both the structure and composition of microbial communities in various rhizocompartments, which is derived from the interactions among leguminous plants, soil, and microbes. Plant growth is often constrained by low availability of water and phosphorus (P) in soils in arid and semi-arid areas. Aeolian sandy soils cover >90% of the sandy area of the Mu Us Sandy Land (MUSL) in Northwest China. These soils have low water- and nutrient-retention capacity, limiting their ability to support plant growth. Pisha sandstone, a type of loose rock widely distributed in the MUSL, is regarded as an environmental hazard because it easily weathers, resulting in severe soil erosion and water loss. However, the retention capacity of the aeolian sandy soil can be significantly improved through blending with Pisha sandstone. We investigated the impacts of water supply (35% and 70% of soil water-holding capacity) and P supply (0, 5 and 20 mg P kg–1 soil) on plant growth and P and nitrogen (N) nutrition by growing lucerne (Medicago sativa L.) in MUSL aeolian sandy soil amended or not with Pisha sandstone. Soil type and P supply had greater effects than water supply on lucerne growth and on P and N nutrition. Biomass accumulation and shoot P and N concentrations were increased by amending the aeolian sandy soil with Pisha sandstone and increasing P supply. The N : P ratios in shoots indicated that plant growth was limited by P but not by N. Aeolian sandy soil amended with Pisha sandstone and supplied with P at 5 mg kg–1 enhanced lucerne growth; this practice is feasible for pasture development in the MUSL. Plant growth is often limited by low water and phosphorus (P) availability in most soils in arid and semi-arid areas. Based on the analysis of particle size mechanical composition and parameter distribution of surface sediments in the Hobq Desert (HD), the Ulan Buh Desert (UBD) and the northern part of the Mu Us Desert (MUD) in western Inner Mongolia, and combining the sedimentary environment discrimination method and the particle size lognormal fitting method, this research compares and explores the particle size characteristics and the significance of sensitive components in the sedimentary environment to the provenance in the three deserts. The results are shown as follows: (1) Sediment samples in the HD are dominated by fine sand (48.9%), in the UBD by fine sand and medium sand (41.10% and 42.90%, respectively) and in the MUD by medium sand (41.62%). (2) σ 1 and S K 1 in the HD and the UBD are well sorted and symmetric, but are averagely sorted and show highly positive skewness in the MUD. (3) The sediment samples in the HD and the UBD are mainly aeolian sediments, with lacustrine sediments being secondary. By contrast, the sediment samples in MUD is largely made up of lacustrine deposits. (4) By fitting the particle size frequency curves of all samples, five components, namely C1, C2, C3, C4 and C5 ranging from fineness to coarseness, are obtained. It is also indicated that the sediments in the study area do not undergo a wide range of mixing, but mainly experience in situ sedimentation. The most of these sediments may belong to lakeshore deposits that have been modified by wind for a long time, and are accompanied by long-distance westerly dust, weathered debris from bedrock, and active paleosand dunes of riverbed sediments. Mineral dust released from the desert is one of the important components of atmospheric aerosols. Arid and semi-arid deserts, sandy lands in northern China and their adjacent Gobi Desert lands in northern China and neighboring Mongolia (hereinafter referred to as Gobi) are potential sources of mineral dust in Asia. However, there is currently a lack of systematic studies on the characteristics of major elements in the potential mineral dust source area. This study investigates the major elements of 310 surficial sand samples in the stabilized and semi-stabilized dune fields from 12 deserts/sandy land and Gobi in northern China and southern Mongolian Gobi and compiles published data. We identify four regions with distinct geochemical characteristics: (1) Taklimakan, Kumtag and Qaidam deserts in western China; (2) Badain Jaran, Tengger, Hobq, and Mu Us deserts in the central and western regions of northern China; (3) Hulun Buir, Onqin Daga and Horqin sandy lands in northeast China; and (4) Gobi and Gurbantunggut deserts. The spatial distributions of the SiO2 and CaO contents in Chinese deserts are highly variable. The average content of SiO2 generally reflects an increasing trend from west to east, while the average content of CaO shows a decreasing trend from west to east. We demonstrate that the spatial variation of major elements is likely controlled by two key scenarios: the composition of source rocks and the mineral maturity caused by the supply of fresh materials. The SiO2/(Al2O3+K2O+Na2O) ratio of desert sediments is relatively lower in western China and may be caused by high ferric-magnesia and high carbonate minerals; this ratio is relatively higher in the northeast sandy lands and may be linked to a lack of fresh material supply and the presence of high K-feldspar minerals in source rocks. The deserts can be further distinguished by ternary diagrams with SiO2/10-CaO-Al2O3, (K2O+Na2O)-CaO-Fe2O3 and CaO-Na2O-K2O. The comparison of major elements between desert sediments and loess suggests that the western and/or central deserts in China may be the potential provenances of loess on the Loess Plateau. While saltation bombardment of sand grains on a fine substrate can produce considerable dust, the well-sorted nature of sand dunes tends to preclude them from consideration as major dust sources. Recent research, however, has revealed that sand dunes can, in some cases, be large sources of dust. We used the PI-SWERL (Portable In-Situ Wind Erosion Laboratory) to measure in the field the potential of sand dunes and other desert landforms to emit particulate matter <10 μm (PM-10) dust in the Tengger, Ulan Buh, and Mu Us deserts of northern China. Combined with high resolution particle size measurements of the dune sand, an assessment of sand dunes as a dust source can be made. Large active transverse dunes tend to contain little to no stored PM-10, yet they produce a low dust flux. Coppice dunes stabilized by vegetation contain appreciable PM-10 and have very high dust emission potential. There is a positive correlation between the amount of PM-10 stored in a dune and its potential dust flux. Saltation liberates loose fines stored in dunes, making them very efficient dust emitters compared to landforms such as dry lake beds and washes where dust particles are unavailable for aeolian transport due to protective crusts or sediment cohesion. In cases where large dunes do not store PM-10 yet emit dust when active, two hypotheses can be considered: (1) iron-oxide grain coatings are removed during saltation, creating dust, and (2) sand grains collide during saltation, abrading grains to create dust. Observations reveal that iron oxide coatings are present on some dune sands. PI-SWERL data suggests that low dust fluxes from dunes containing no stored dust may represent an estimate for the amount of PM-10 dust produced by removal of iron oxide coatings. These results are similar to results from dunes in the United States. In addition, PI-SWERL results suggest that dust-bearing coppice dunes, which cover vast areas of China's sandy deserts, may become major sources of dust in the future if overgrazing, depletion of groundwater, or drought destabilizes the vegetation that now partially covers these dunes. The complicated desert vegetation pattern and its links to soil conditions in the Manas River basin where the natural landscape and human land-use history are representative for NW China and even central Asia are quantitatively investigated in this study. Vegetation and soil of 47 remnant desert and 22 cropland stands along the Manas River were sampled. Soil features, including Total Organic Carbon (TOC), total and individual ( $${\text{HCO}}_3^ - $$ , $${\text{CO}}_3^{2 - } $$ , Cl−, $${\text{SO}}_4^{2 - } $$ , K+, Na+, Ca2+, Mg2+) salt content, and physical components of both remnant desert and cropland stands were analyzed in a laboratory. In total, eight types of desert and lowland marsh communities are distinguished. Topographical conditions are found to strongly affect soil features. The topsoil is also distinguishable from the subsoil, particularly in clay content. Statistical analyses demonstrate that both silt percentage and total salt content in the soil are significant for the distribution of plant communities. Discriminant functions for the main desert and lowland marsh types were established based on their subsoil features, with accuracy up to 83%. The vegetation patterns prior to massive cultivation of 22 cropland plots were reliably interpreted from the cropland subsoil features using these discriminant functions. Twenty of them coincide very well with topological conditions, place names and records in literature, further confirming that the subsoil features have not substantially changed in the shifting from desert to cropland. The physio-chemical and chemical features of water in natural conditions are controlled by the weathering of bedrocks, local climate, landforms and other geo-environmental parameters. In order to understand the characteristics of water and the origins of the dissolved loads in the rivers and in the ground waters of the Taklimakan Desert, western China, we studied the ions in the water samples collected from rivers and wells. We collected water samples from four rivers (Kenya River, Cele River, Tumiya River and Yulongkashi River) in the southern desert and ground water samples from many parts of the desert. Major cations and anions were measured using ion-chromatograph and titration with HCl. The total dissolved solids (TDS), pH and conductivity were examined on site by a portable multi-parameter analyzer. The data show that the water in the rivers of southern Taklimakan is still of fresh water quality and slight alkalinity, although the TDS is comparatively higher than that of many other rivers of the world. The ground water is fresh to slightly saline, with TDS a little higher than that of river water in the study area. The concentration of ions is slightly different between the four rivers in the southern Taklimakan. However, the chemistries of ground water in all samples are to a large degree controlled by sodium and chloride. The ions in the ground water are concluded to be mainly from dissolving of evaporites, consistent with the dry climate in the region, whereas the ions in the rivers are mainly from rock weathering. Halostachys caspica (Chenopodiaceae) is a halophytic shrub commonly found in saline areas of the western deserts in China that produces small-sized seeds (0.07 mg). Effects of temperature, light, NaCl, and polyethylene glycol-6000 on seed germination were investigated by incubating seeds in Petri dishes in controlled environments. Seed germination was promoted by both light and temperature alternation. Seed dormancy was not detected. Temperature dependence of seed germination indicated that H. caspica seeds are able to germinate at any time between spring and autumn in their habitats in China. Seed germination was almost completely withheld when seeds were moistened with 500 mmol kg-1 NaCl, but seeds remained viable after moistening with 3000 mmol kg-1 NaCl for 41 d. Opportunities for seed germination were expected to be very limited in the field because for photoblastic H. caspica seeds to germinate, the seeds need to be almost exposed to the soil surface, where they are likely to suffer severe water deficiency and high salinity. It was suggested that germination of H. caspica seeds in the field is facilitated by a supply of a large amount of water from melting snow in early spring. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In order to understand the exchange and transfer processes of water and energy in the desert soil and the atmospheric boundary layer (ABL), we have developed a coupled model, in which a desert soil model including water movement of both liquid and vapour phase, and an ABL model based on a non-local transilient turbulence closure scheme, are coupled together. With this model, the evolution of potential temperature and specific humidity, the distribution of net radiation among sensible, latent and soil heat fluxes, and the water and heat flux profiles both in the soil and ABL have been simulated. The HEIFE (HEIhe River Basin Field Experiment) observational data are used to calibrate calculation of the water and heat flux both in the soil and the ABL. The sensible and latent heat fluxes warm and moisten the bottom grid box (100m) of the ABL. In this way the ABL model and the desert soil model are coupled together. The simulated results show that when the flux of water vapour in the soil is neglected, the evaporation rate and the flux profiles of specific humidity in the ABL show great changes, hence the importance of water vapour movement in the desert soil for the calculation of specific humidity in the ABL. In the upper 5cm of the soil, which is called an active layer, water and heat transport are more effective than in the substrate (soil below 5 cm). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
