Abstract

This volume presents a collection of selected papers by the prominent Brazilian mathematician Djairo G. de Figueiredo, who has made significant contributions in the area of Differential Equations and Analysis. His work has been highly influential as a challenge and inspiration to young mathematicians as well as in development of the general area of analysis in his home country of Brazil.In addition to a large body of research covering a variety of areas including geometry of Banach spaces, monotone operators, nonlinear elliptic problems and variational methods applied to differential equations, de Figueiredo is known for his many monographs and books. Among others, this book offers a sample of the work of Djairo, as he is commonly addressed, advancing the study of superlinear elliptic problems (both scalar and system cases), including questions on critical Sobolev exponents and maximum principles for non-cooperative elliptic systems in Hamiltonian form.

Abstract

There is a need for further studies on students' learning of Differential Equations (DEs), especially in advanced undergraduate and graduate courses. Research on the mathematical education of engineers shows a conflict between students' demands for practical, contextualized pedagogies and the need for abstract reasoning and appropriate use of mathematical results. Few papers focus on engineering students' interpretation of theorems and their use as tools in argumentation and problem-solving. This paper takes a sociocultural stance on learning and employs dialogical inquiry – a methodology rooted in Bakhtinian theory, newly developed for collaborative inquiry and qualitative data analysis – to investigate the meanings that senior engineering students made while working on a task designed to evaluate their understanding of Existence and Uniqueness Theorems (EUTs) of solutions of DEs. We identified two important epistemological disconnections that explain the difficulties that some of our students faced in making meaning of solutions of DEs and the EUT. • There is a need for more studies on the learning of Differential Equations (DEs). • Few research papers focus on students' meaning-making of theoretical results in DEs. • Dialogical inquiry methodology was used to analyze students' meaning-making processes. • Two epistemological disconnections were found that explain students' difficulties. • The use of warrants in students' dialogue was important in their meaning-making. Abstract

The study of the dynamics of the size of a population via mathematical modelling is a problem of interest and widely studied. Traditionally, continuous deterministic methods based on differential equations have been used to deal with this problem. However, discrete versions of some models are also available and sometimes more adequate. In this paper, we randomize the Pielou logistic equation in order to include the inherent uncertainty in modelling. Taking advantage of the method of transformation of random variables, we provide a full probabilistic description to the randomized Pielou logistic model via the computation of the probability density functions of the solution stochastic process, the steady state, and the time until a certain level of population is reached. The theoretical results are illustrated by means of two examples: The first one consists of a numerical experiment and the second one shows an application to study the diffusion of a technology using real data. Abstract

J.M. Burgers (1895--1981) is regarded as one of the leading scientists in the field of fluid mechanics, contributing many important results, a number of which still bear his name. However, the work of this outstanding scientist was mostly published in the Proceedings and Transactions of The Royal Netherlands Academy of Sciences, of which he was a distinguished member. Nowadays, this work is almost impossible to obtain through the usual library channels. Therefore, the editors have decided to reissue the most important work of J.M. Burgers, which gives the reader access to the original papers which led to important results, now known as the Burgers Equation, the Burgers Vector and the Burgers Vortex. Further, the book contains a biography of J.M. Burgers, which provides the reader with both information on his scientific life, as well as a rounded impression of the many activities which J.M. Burgers performed or was involved in outside his science.

Abstract

Abstract: Two players of Rock-Paper-Scissors are modeled as adaptive agents which use a reinforcement learning algorithm and exhibit chaotic behavior in terms of trajectories of probability in mixed strategies space. This paper demonstrates that an external super-agent can exploit the behavior of the other players to predict favorable moments to play against one of the other players the symbol suggested by a sub-optimal strategy. This third agent does not affect the learning process of the other two players, whose only goal is to beat each other. The choice of the best moment to play is based on a threshold associated with the Local Lyapunov Exponent or the Entropy, each computed by using the time series of symbols played by one of the other players. A method for automatically adapting such a threshold is presented and evaluated. The results show that these techniques can be used effectively by a super-agent in a game involving adaptive agents that exhibit collective chaotic behavior. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract

Discretizing a differential equation may change the qualitative behaviour drastically, even if the stepsize is small. We illustrate this by looking at the discretization of a piecewise continuous differential equation that models a population of agents playing the Rock-Paper-Scissors game. The globally asymptotically stable equilibrium of the differential equation turns, after discretization, into a repeller surrounded by an annulus shaped attracting region. 37. Writing in a Reformed Differential Equations Class.

Abstract

In an attempt to promote the development of understanding over rote memorization, writing in mathematics has received increased attention in recent years. In Calculus, the Rule of Three (based on communicating ideas thorough algebraic, graphical and numerical means) has been replaced by the Rule of Four in which writing plays a central role. Educators agree that the benefits of writing include the promotion of understanding, and the initiation of the posing of questions. Writing also helps generate meaning, and helps in the retention of content. In this paper the author evaluates the use of writing for analyzing a problem and its solution. The setting is a reformed differential equations class offered at the Lebanese American University. Unlike a traditional ode course where students are provided with a cookbook of methods for solving differential equations, the emphasis in a reformed ode course is placed on the geometry of the solutions and on an analysis of the outcomes. In many instances, analytically, and the sketch is to be supplemented by an argument justifying it. In addition, various real life problems are modeled and essay questions are asked to analyze the graphs describing these models. Results show that students first reject the idea, but later rate writing as essential. Furthermore, an improvement in the style and content of the writing exercises in usually noticeable at the end of each semester. (Author)

The aim of this paper is to study a new equivalent form of the weak maximum principle for a large class of differential operators on Riemannian manifolds. This new form has been inspired by the work of Berestycki, Hamel and Rossi for trace operators, and allows us to shed new light on it and to introduce a new sufficient bounded Khas'minskii type condition for its validity. Abstract

A two-phase method for estimation of the scattering and absorption coefficients and the asymmetry factor (σs, σa and g) in the radiative transfer problem is presented. The first phase parameterizes σs and σa through g via a simplified model and performs-at a relatively low cost-a scalar optimization over g. It is shown that this gives such a good starting point that the second phase can be accurately performed by a simple Gauss-Newton method. It is also shown that as a part of the first phase can be used on its own when only σs and σa are wanted, and it is noted that this gives higher accuracy than the commonly used Kubelka-Munk method when using standardized paper industry reflectance factor measurements. The parameter estimation problem is shown to be non-trivial and ill-conditioned, and its character is analysed. It is discussed that as standard optimization methods are so sensitive to the choice of starting point for this problem that it is hard to find a starting point that gives convergence at all. The new two-phase method is illustrated by application to relevant paper industry problems, and efficiency and sensitivity measures are given. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

We assessed 6122 environmental modelling papers published since 2005 to determine whether the number of citations each paper had received by September 2014 could be predicted with no knowledge of the paper's quality. A random forest was applied, using a range of easily quantified or classified variables as predictors. The 511 papers published in two key journals in 2008 were further analysed to consider additional variables. Papers with no differential equations received more citations. The topic of the paper, number of authors and publication venue were also significant. Ten other factors, some of which have been found significant in other studies, were also considered, but most added little to the predictive power of the models. Collectively, all factors predicted 16–29% of the variation in citation counts, with the remaining variance (the majority) presumably attributable to important subjective factors such as paper quality, clarity and timeliness. Abstract

Parametric vibration and dynamic stability of the printing paper web with variable speed were studied. The speed of the moving paper web was regarded as the sum of the constant mean speed and the sine pulse speed. The dynamical model and the transverse vibration differential equation were established. The period coefficient state equation was obtained by discretizing the space variable of the differential equation with the differential quadrature method and imported state vector. The instability region and the stability region of the paper web were determined by the implicit Runge-Kutta method. The relationships of the instability region versus the tension ratio, length-width ratio and the amplitude of the sine pulse speed were analyzed. The results provide a theoretical basis for optimizing the structure of the printing machine and improving the working stability of the paper web. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The undergraduate curriculum in differential equations has undergone important changes in favor of the visual and numerical aspects of the course primarily because of recent technological advances. Yet, research findings that have analyzed students' thinking and understanding in a reformed setting are still lacking. This paper discusses an ongoing developmental research effort to adapt the instructional design perspective of Realistic Mathematics Education (RME) to the teaching and learning of differential equations at Ewha Womans University. The RME theory based on the design heuristic using context problems and modeling was developed for primary school mathematics. However, the analysis of this study indicates that a RME design for a differential equations course can be successfully adapted to the university level. (Contains 37 references.) (Author)

This paper studies the modes of thought that occur during the act of solving problems in mathematics. It examines the two main instantiations of mathematical knowledge, the conceptual and the structural, and their role in the act. It claims that awareness of mathematical structure is the lever that educes mathematical knowledge existing in the mind in response to a problem-solving activity. For didactical purposes it proposes the consideration of mathematical techniques to facilitate the accessing of pertinent knowledge. All the assertions above are substantiated by close examination of some exemplars taken from various mathematical topics, and the presentation of some recent fieldwork results. 45. Integration of CAS in the Didactics of Differential Equations.

Abstract

In this paper are described some features of the intensive use of math software, primarily DERIVE, in the context of modeling in an introductory university course in differential equations. Different aspects are detailed: changes in the curriculum that included not only course contents, but also the sequence of introduction to various topics and methodologies. For example, the use of software at the beginning of the course followed a black box strategy, in order to emphasize mathematical modeling and the discussion of theory's central problems. Also covered is the enrichment of discussion about classic problems; using computer algebra systems (CAS) potentialities to demonstrate properties without the necessities of investing excessive time in technical details; avoiding long and boring calculations; design and redesign of materials that attempt to guarantee success of information technology integration; combined use of several software packages; and finally, feedback from students and assessment. Abstract

This study investigated six students' understandings of and difficulties with qualitative and numerical methods for analyzing differential equations. From an individual cognitive perspective, the obstacles found to influence the development of students' understandings included the function dilemma, the tendency to overgeneralize, interference from informal or intuitive notions, and the complexity involved with graphical interpretations. From a sociocultural perspective, students' understandings were constrained by the use of technology that was disconnected from the learning process, instruction that did not seek out students' explanations, and classroom interactions that implicitly established procedure-based mathematical justifications.
