This essay studies the cultural consequences that the spread of paper money had in late nineteenth-century Brazil. First, I examine how these tensions are called into question through the analysis of a political scandal that took place in Rio de Janeiro, in 1900, concerning a two thousand reales banknote. Second, I offer a close reading of Machado de Assis' "Anedota pecuniária", a short-story included in Histórias sem data (1884). My goal is to interrogate the relation between paper money and the economy of credit work, and the narrative devices of literary fiction. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper aims to present the dramas experienced by Brazilian artists during the COVID-19 pandemic. This investigation is nested in one of the axes of broader research on the social impacts of the pandemic in Brazil. Initially, we argue that a pandemic is a critical event with multiple scales, which affects populations unevenly, as is the case of art world professionals, an unorthodox field in terms of specialties and remuneration, which was already suffering from the impacts of reduced investments in public policies in the cultural sector since the mid-2010s. Given the measures to face the pandemic, among which are restrictions on gatherings, artistic events were prohibited, and professionals could not act conventionally, generating economic problems and psychological distress. This paper explores the dramatic report of some of these professionals, highlighting the strategies adopted to cope with the crisis due to the impossibility of performing, the scarcity of public policies for the sector, and the national political and economic elite disdain for the arts and culture. Capital accumulation is the first and foremost important factor to induce economic growth and development in a country. Yet, not every country in the world is bestowed with abundant capital. Thus, in this instance foreign direct investment (FDI) emerges as a good option to supply the necessary amount of capital to countries which are deprived of the necessary capital stock. Moreover, FDI, besides being a catalyst of economic development, is a significant means of transferring technology, knowledge, managerial know-how and constitutes new potentials to create employment opportunities, increase the production volume and enhance the foreign trade balance. Furthermore, the impact of FDI inflow on the economic growth is researched in this paper for Brazil by means of utilizing various econometric methods for the period of 1970–2017. According to the results of this study there is no positive causality between economic growth and FDI inflow in the short-run. Yet, there is a positive and significant causality between FDI inflow and economic growth in the long-run as well as this stems from the fact that investments lead to positive results gradually in the long-term which also means that investments shall be converted into production as much as possible. Media convergence and growing financial pressure on the journalistic field have triggered significant changes in newsmaking cultures across the world. This article examines the challenges of media convergence in the newsroom of Valor Econômico, the main economic newspaper in Brazil. In particular, it explores how the introduction in 2013 of Valor Pro, a real time news service oriented to the financial market, changed newsmaking practices at Valor Econômico. The introduction of Valor Pro meant that journalists from the whole newsroom had to report news simultaneously for three platforms: the real time service, the online website and the printed paper. This shift not only intensified journalists’ workloads and altered the manufacture of news, but also increased financial pressure on the paper’s agenda. I argue that this shift – from producing news for the public towards producing news for the market – cannot be explained solely with reference to traditional political economic factors such as ideological decisions at editorial level and the structural properties of the Brazilian media sphere. Instead, drawing on resources from cultural sociology and from science and technology studies, I provide a richer explanation that acknowledges the impact of technological innovation, the shifting nature of news values, and the agency of journalists themselves. This article elaborates on seven months of ethnographic fieldwork in Valor Econômico’s newsroom in São Paulo between 2013 and 2015 and contributes to the literature on cultural sociology, media studies and science and technology studies. The new global economic order is creating an inflection point in the global economy. BRIC countries have experienced a shift in global wealth, resulting in an increase in their economic and political clout on a global scale. Reflecting these recent trends and changes, the Brazilian economy was ranked 6th in the world in 2012. Companies doing business in Brazil need to understand the nature of its economy and design strategies and policies to maximize their earnings in the Brazilian market. Brazil's booming oil & gas industries, agribusiness, services, and manufacturing industries offer a high potential for companies willing to face Brazil's many challenges, such as shortages of qualified labor force, and high taxes. Brazil's booming middle class also poses a number of challenges for companies that need to tailor their offerings to a young and evolving middle class. At the same time, Brazil is also building a sophisticated and vibrant middle class that will increasingly demand products and services that resemble offerings found in traditional developed markets. Still, market efficiency and productivity enhancers will have to be addressed in order to make the Brazilian economy more competitive. This paper addresses Brazil's core issues permeating its quest towards sustainable growth. The paper addresses the different dimensions of Brazil's economic and social environments, paying heed to recent developments and driving forces shaping Brazil's economy and society. This article presents and critically analyzes the current process of economic globalization identified from the perspective of the so-called emerging countries. Specifically, the engagement of globalization as an economic, cultural and political process with diverse contemporary religious phenomenon is explored in terms of its implications and applications for Pastoral Counseling and Action both in terms of Brazil, specifically, and South America, in general. The pastoral-theological theory grounding of this paper comes from Practical Theology. We explore a discontinuity in the incentives created by the Brazilian Tourism Regionalization Program. We employ a research discontinuity design, focussing on municipalities in the transitions between two classes. We observe significant effects of the Program in tourist cities, including an increase in the value-added of services and per capita GDP. Additionally, we find that the value-added in industrial activities increases, implying a spillover effect from the improvement in local tourism conditions for other economic activities. In the present paper, I focus on the overall level of import penetration of the Brazilian market for manufactured goods, the impact of China on the growth and structure of the Brazilian economy, and the composition of Brazil's exports to China. The article “The territory’s management in question: a perspective coming from Brazil” is divided into four parts: the first one, destined to the presentation of the initial idea for the analyses at hand, the territory’s management by the National State; the second part demonstrates, by means of inquiries, new contributions from geography, sociology and economy regarding the territory’s social and political potential. Composing the two last parts of the paper, the present positioning for Europe’s territorial planning, in a very tight synergy with the scientific effort, as its influence on Brazilian territorial policies; concluding with the author’s interpretation regarding these innovations under Brazilian perspective. Taking Cildo Meireles's installation, Mission/Missions – How to build cathedrals, as a starting point, this article will discuss artistic procedures in the artist's work and their enunciations in social structures, taking land as an artistic and literary topos. Within Cildo Meireles's Mission/Missions – How to build cathedrals (1987), there are points of intersection between artistic, philosophical, and literary forms of knowledge that ceaselessly and reflexively give rise to new questions. In this work, a sensory and schematic knowledge arranges the pillars of economy, the sacred, and animality around an architecture that is elaborated using coins, communion wafers, and animal bones. In Mission/Missions, Cildo Meireles creates a space at once geographical and historical that exposes the internal fractures of Western civilisation in its expansion on the South American continent. Working from this installation, we will revisit the artist's previous works to find material and conceptual elements that have been decisive for the realisation of Mission/Missions. Reading the installation through the materiality of previous works helps to orient us conceptually in an intertextual network that the very installation summons through the space created by Cildo Meireles. BACKGROUND Infertility is an important health issue, but only a small fraction of the affected population receives treatment in Brazil, because it is not covered by the government or private health insurance plans. We developed a generational accounting-based mathematical model to assess the direct economic result of creating a citizen through IVF in different economic scenarios, and the potential economic benefit generated by the individual and his/her future offspring. METHODS A mathematical model analyzes the revenues and expenses of an IVF-conceived individual over his lifetime. We calculated the net present value (NPV) of an IVF-conceived citizen, and this value corresponds to the fiscal contribution to the government by an individual, from birth through his predicted life expectancy. The calculation used discount rates of 4.0 and 7.0% to depreciate the money value by time. RESULTS A 4.0% discount rate represents the most favorable economic scenario in Brazil, and it results in an NPV of US$ 61 428. A 7.0% discount rate represents a less favorable economic reality, and it results in a debit of U$ 563, but this debt may be compensated by his/her future offspring. CONCLUSIONS The fiscal contribution generated by each IVF-conceived citizen can justify an initial government investment in infertility treatment. Poor economic times in Brazil can sometimes result in a fiscal debt from each new IVF-conceived child, but this initial expenditure may be compensated by the fiscal contribution in the next generation. Forest industries look for multiple utilizations for their timber production. In Brazil, the genus Eucalyptus has a great potential for solid wood products; however, only a small amount of Eucalyptus is used as sawn timber. About 50% of the log volume ends up as waste during mechanical processing, resulting in serious economic and environmental problems. In most cases, such residue is discarded at random or used as fuel, and in this context the sustainable management of processing industrial waste is an urgent necessity. Parallel to this, Eucalyptus has not been employed for small wooden object (SWO) production. Hence, the aim of this work was to evaluate the performance of small wooden objects produced with Eucalyptus urophylla, E. camaldulensis, and E. grandis waste from sawmilling. Brazilian craftsmen manufactured SWOs with Eucalyptus, and these crafted objects were presented at exhibits and trade fairs for assessment. The proposed small wooden objects made with Eucalyptus residues exhibited satisfactory performance and achieved excellent acceptance by the visitors. This work gave evidence that the use of sawmill waste as raw material for small wooden object manufacture has potential to generate income for economically underprivileged communities near to a plantation.
