A multilevel dodecagonal voltage space vector generation scheme for variable-speed drive applications with single-dc-link operation requires a large value of capacitance for cascaded H-bridge (CHB) filters, when operated at lower speeds. In existing schemes, the multilevel dodecagonal structure is obtained by cascading a flying capacitor inverter with a CHB. In this paper, a new scheme has been proposed to minimize the capacitance requirement for full speed operation by creating vector redundancies using modular and equal voltage CHBs. Also, an algorithm has been developed to optimize the selection of vector redundancies among the CHBs in order to minimize the voltage ripple of the floating capacitors. The proposed algorithm considers instantaneous capacitor voltages and phase currents for optimal selection of vector redundancies. A mathematical model for capacitor voltage deviation is presented, and the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm is verified in both the simulation and the experiment. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Generating dense multilevel voltage space structure using polygons of higher sides is one of the novel and elegant method to suppress low-order harmonics and to obtain refined sinusoidal voltages using voltage source inverters for variable frequency drive application without passive filters. Apart from the advantages of conventional multilevel inverter topologies, schemes generating polygonal voltage space vector structure can equip full dc-bus utilization, low switching frequency strategies to eliminate low-order harmonics, and increased linear modulation range. In this paper, an induction motor drive scheme generating a highly dense multilevel 24-sided polygonal voltage space vector structure using a single dc source, which can eliminate harmonics till 23rd order from phase voltages, is presented. Cascaded power circuit topology with a flying capacitor inverter fed with a dc source and two low voltage floating capacitor fed H-bridge inverters is used. Detailed experimentally validated results, under scalar as well as indirect rotor field oriented control of induction motor are provided. In this paper, a new inverter topology is proposed for generating a multilevel dodecagonal voltage space vector structure for open-end winding induction motor (IM) using a single dc source. Dodecagonal voltage space vector structure eliminates fifth- and seventh-order harmonic voltages from phase voltage output and hence eliminates the fifth- and seventh-order harmonic currents through the motor leading to removal of the dominant sixth-order torque ripple generation in the motor over the entire modulation range. Multilevel space vector structure generates output voltage with better THD and low dv/dt. In the proposed topology, two three-level inverters drive an open-end winding IM, one inverter from each side. DC-link of primary inverter is from a dc source which delivers the entire active power, whereas the secondary inverter dc-link is maintained by a capacitor, which is self balanced during the inverter operation. The PWM scheme implemented ensures low switching frequency for primary inverter. Secondary inverter operates at a small dc-link voltage. Hence, switching losses are small for both primary and secondary inverters. Experimental results show the elimination of fifth- and seventh-order harmonic voltages over the entire modulation range, validating effectiveness of the proposed multilevel inverter scheme. This study presents a novel magnetic arm-switch-based integrated magnetic circuit for a three-phase series-shunt compensated uninterruptible power supply (UPS). The magnetic circuit acts as a common interacting field for a number of energy ports, viz., series inverter, shunt inverter, grid and load. The magnetic arm-switching technique ensures equivalent series or shunt connection between the inverters. In normal grid mode (stabiliser mode), the series inverter is used for series voltage correction and the shunt one for current correction. The inverters and the load are effectively connected in parallel when the grid power is not available. These inverters are then used to share the load power. The operation of the inverters in parallel is ensured by the magnetic arm-switching technique. This study also includes modelling of the magnetic circuit. A graphical technique called bond graph is used to model the system. In this model, the magnetic circuit is represented in terms of gyrator-capacitors. Therefore the model is also termed as gyrator-capacitor model. The model is used to extract the dynamic equations that are used to simulate the system using MATLAB/SIMULINK. This study also discusses a synchronously rotating reference frame-based control technique that is used for the control of the series and shunt inverters in different operating modes. This paper proposes a method of sharing power/energy between multiple sources and multiple loads using an integrated magnetic circuit as a junction between sources and sinks. It also presents a particular use of the magnetic circuit as an ac power supply, delivering sinusoidal voltage to load irrespective of the presence of the grid, taking only active power from the grid. The proposed magnetic circuit is a three-energy-port unit, viz.: 1) power/energy from grid; 2) power energy from battery–inverter unit; and 3) power/energy delivery to the load in its particular application as quality ac power supply (QPS). The product provides sinusoidal regulated output voltage, input power-factor correction, electrical isolation between the sources and loads, low battery voltage, and control simplicity. Unlike conventional series–shunt-compensated uninterruptible power supply topologies with low battery voltage, the isolation is provided using a single magnetic circuit that results in a smaller size and lower cost. A rotor position estimation scheme for stator flux-oriented speed sensorless control of slip ring induction machine (SRIM) is presented in this paper. Position of the rotor is estimated by integrating the rotor back-electromotive force. The problem of DC drift during integration is eliminated using an error-decaying mechanism in the estimator. This estimation scheme reduces the propagation of noise in the sensed current to the estimated rotor side unit vectors. This scheme also eliminates the need for differentiating the unit vectors for estimating slip frequency. The proposed scheme is simulated and experimentally verified. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

For hybrid electric vehicles, the batteries and the drive dc link may be at different voltages. The batteries are at low voltage to obtain higher volumetric efficiencies, and the dc link is at higher voltage to have higher efficiency on the motor side. Therefore, a power interface between the batteries and the drive's dc link is essential. This power interface should handle power flow from battery to motor, motor to battery, external genset to battery, and grid to battery. This paper proposes a multi-power-port topology which is capable of handling multiple power sources and still maintains simplicity and features like obtaining high gain, wide load variations, lower output-current ripple, and capability of parallel-battery energy due to the modular structure. The scheme incorporates a transformer winding technique which drastically reduces the leakage inductance of the coupled inductor. The development and testing of a bidirectional flyback dc-dc converter for hybrid electric vehicle is described in this paper.
