A visible light communication broadcast channel is considered, in which a transmitter luminaire communicates with two legitimate receivers in the presence of an external eavesdropper. A number of trusted cooperative half-duplex relay luminaires are deployed to aid with securing the transmitted data. Transmitters are equipped with single light fixtures, containing multiple light emitting diodes, and receiving nodes are equipped with single photo-detectors, rendering the considered setting as a single-input single-output system. Transmission is amplitude-constrained to maintain operation within the light emitting diodes’ dynamic range. Achievable secrecy rate regions are derived under such amplitude constraints for this multi-receiver wiretap channel, first for direct transmission without the relays, and then for multiple relaying schemes: cooperative jamming, decode-and-forward, and amplify-and-forward. Superposition coding with uniform signaling is used at the transmitter and the relays. Further, for each relaying scheme, secure beamforming vectors are carefully designed at the relay nodes in order to hurt the eavesdropper and/or benefit the legitimate receivers. Superiority of the proposed relaying schemes, with secure beamforming, is shown over direct transmission. It is also shown that the best relaying scheme depends on how far the eavesdropper is located from the transmitter and the relays, the number of relays, and their geometric layout. We propose a composite decode-forward (DF) scheme for the two-way relay channel in the full-duplex mode by combining coherent, independent, and partial relaying strategies. The relay partially decodes each user’s information in each block and forwards this information coherently with the source user to the destination user in the next block as in block Markov coding. In addition, the relay independently broadcasts a binning index of both users’ decoded information parts in the next block as in independent network coding. Each technique has a different impact on the relay power usage and the rate region. We further consider the independent and partial DF scheme for its more practical channel state information requirements, and derive in closed-form link regimes when this scheme achieves a strictly larger rate region than just time sharing between its constituent techniques, direct transmission, and independent DF relaying, and when it reduces to a simpler scheme. The analytical approach is based on maximizing the weighted composite DF sum rate and comparing with the outermost time-sharing line connecting corner points of rate regions of the constituent techniques. In this paper, we investigate the capacity of the Gaussian two-hop full-duplex (FD) relay channel with residual self-interference. This channel is comprised of a source, an FD relay, and a destination, where a direct source-destination link does not exist and the FD relay is impaired by residual self-interference. We adopt the worst case linear self-interference model with respect to the channel capacity, and model the residual self-interference as a Gaussian random variable whose variance depends on the amplitude of the transmit symbol of the relay. For this channel, we derive the capacity and propose an explicit capacity-achieving coding scheme. Thereby, we show that the optimal input distribution at the source is Gaussian and its variance depends on the amplitude of the transmit symbol of the relay. On the other hand, the optimal input distribution at the relay is discrete or Gaussian, where the latter case occurs only when the relay-destination link is the bottleneck link. The derived capacity converges to the capacity of the two-hop ideal FD relay channel without self-interference and to the capacity of the two-hop half-duplex (HD) relay channel in the limiting cases when the residual self-interference is zero and infinite, respectively. Our numerical results show that significant performance gains are achieved with the proposed capacity-achieving coding scheme compared with the achievable rates of conventional HD relaying and/or conventional FD relaying. In this paper, we re-examine the relay channel under the decode-forward (DF) strategy. Contrary to the established belief that block Markov coding is always the rate-optimal DF strategy, under certain channel conditions (a link regime), independent signaling between the source and relay achieves the same transmission rate without requiring coherent channel phase information. Furthermore, this independent signaling regime allows the relay to conserve power. As such, we design a composite DF relaying strategy that achieves the same rate as block Markov DF but with less required relay power. The finding is attractive from the link adaptation perspective to adapt relay coding and relay power according to the link state. We examine this link adaptation in fading under both perfect channel state information (CSI) and practical CSI in which nodes have perfect receive and long-term transmit CSI, and derive the corresponding relay power savings in both cases. We also derive the outage probability of the composite relaying scheme, which adapts the signaling to the link regime. Through simulation, we expose a tradeoff for relay placement showing that the relay conserves the most power when closer to the destination but achieves the most rate gain when closer to the source. We study the capacity region of the parallel Gaussian bidirectional relay channel with $L$ independent sub-channels and propose efficient coding schemes for approaching the capacity limit within a constant gap. A two-step approach is considered. First, the corresponding finite field linear deterministic model is studied, for which linear network coding across sub-channels is shown to achieve the capacity region of the channel. Next, based on the insight obtained, a lattice-based compute-and-forward scheme together with simple linear network coding across sub-channels is proposed and is shown to achieve the capacity region of the Gaussian model to within $L$ bits per user regardless of the channel parameters. Even though coding across different sub-channels is necessary for approaching the capacity region, it is shown that this can be realized through a simple linear network coding scheme (across different sub-channels) at the relay. We study the transmission of a set of correlated sources (U1,\ldots ,UK) over a Gaussian multiple access relay channel with time asynchronism between the encoders. We assume that the maximum possible offset \mathsf dmax(n) between the transmitters grows without bound as the block length n \rightarrow \infty , while the relative ratio $ {{ \mathsf {d_{max}}(n) / n}}$ of the maximum possible offset to the block length asymptotically vanishes. For such a joint source-channel coding problem and under specific gain conditions, we derive necessary and sufficient conditions for reliable communications and show that separate source and channel coding achieves optimal performance. In particular, we first derive a general outer bound on the source entropy content for all channel gains as our main result. Then, using Slepian–Wolf source coding combined with the channel coding scheme on top of block Markov coding, we show that the thus achieved inner bound matches the outer bound. In this paper, a forward decoding procedure is developed for the compress-and-forward (CF) relaying scheme. This procedure uses a layered framework and is based on exploiting a feature of the $N$ -to-1 mapping inherent in the underlying Wyner–Ziv binning. It is shown that exploiting this mapping enables the relaxation of the constraint on the rate of the relay codewords representing the bin indices. For the cooperative multimessage network, the proposed procedure achieves the same rate region as the short-message noisy network coding (SNNC) scheme. However, this procedure is more advantageous for other networks including the two networks presented herein. The first network is a relay chain one with two destinations, whereas the second network is a partially cooperative multimessage one with three destinations. In both networks, side information is available to a subset of the decoding nodes, but not to the rest of the nodes, and in both cases, the network benefits from the relaxation of the rate of the CF bin indices. Low-density lattice codes (LDLCs) are known for their high decoding efficiency and near-capacity performance on point-to-point Gaussian channels. In this paper, we present a distributed LDLC-based cooperative relaying scheme for the multiple-access relay channel (MARC). The relay node decodes LDLC-coded packets from two sources and forwards a network-coded combination to the destination. At the destination, a joint iterative decoding structure is designed to exploit the diversity gain as well as coding gain. For the LDLC-based network coding operation at the relay, we consider two alternative methods which offer a tradeoff between implementation complexity and performance, called superposition LDLC (S-LDLC) and modulo-addition LDLC (MA-LDLC). Soft symbol relaying is considered as an alternative to hard decision relaying which is capable of reducing the effect of error propagation at the relay. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme can provide greater diversity gain and up to 6.2 dB coding gain when compared with noncooperative LDLC coding and uncoded network-coded transmission. The proposed scheme also achieves 2.5 dB gain over network-turbo-coded cooperation, for the same code rate and overall transmitted power. In this paper, we consider the transceiver and relay design for the multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) cellular two-way relay channel (cTWRC), where a multi-antenna base station (BS) exchanges information with multiple multiantenna mobile stations via a multi-antenna relay station (RS). We propose a novel two-way relaying scheme to approach the sum capacity of the MIMO cTWRC. A key contribution of this work is a new nonlinear lattice-based precoding technique to precompensate the interstream interference, so as to achieve efficient interference-free lattice decoding at the relay. We derive sufficient conditions for the proposed scheme to asymptotically achieve the sum capacity of the MIMO cTWRC in the high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) regime. To fully exploit the potential of the proposed scheme, we also investigate the optimal power allocation at the BS and the RS to maximize the weighted sum-rate of the MIMO cTWRC in the general SNR regime. It is shown that the problem can be formulated as a monotonic program, and a polyblock outer approximation algorithm is developed to find the globally optimal solution with guaranteed convergence. We demonstrate by numerical results that the proposed scheme significantly outperforms the existing schemes and closely approaches the sum capacity of the MIMO cTWRC in the high SNR regime. A novel user relaying scheme based on bit concatenation is proposed for multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) broadcast channels. In a broadcasting phase, a part of information for a destination user is concatenated to data for a relaying user and transmitted to the relaying user. The destination user receives the part of information via the relaying user in a relaying phase in addition to the data in the broadcasting phase. An achievable rate region for the proposed scheme is derived and an algorithm to characterize the boundary of the rate region is proposed. Our analysis shows that the proposed user relaying in a MIMO BC expands the achievable rate region for the zero-forcing dirty paper coding (ZF-DPC) in the MIMO BC without relaying. It is also shown that the proposed user relaying scheme always outperforms a superposition coding (SC) based user relaying scheme. Optimal and suboptimal user pair scheduling algorithms are investigated for a two-user MIMO BC and the proposed suboptimal user pair scheduling scheme is shown to approach the optimal scheduling when the relaying channel gain is large. We analyze the stability of a cooperative spectrum leasing system that exploits our “win–win” (WW) cooperative medium access control (MAC), where the relay node (RN) forms a coalition with the source node (SN) to exploit the benefits of spectrum leasing. In this coalition, the licensed SN may achieve its target rate at a reduced energy consumption by leasing part of its spectral resources. As an incentive, the unlicensed RN earns a transmission opportunity for conveying its traffic by jointly encoding both the source's and its own data with the aid of superposition coding. The destination employs successive interference cancelation for decoding the superimposed source–relay data received from the relay and retrieves the source data by appropriately combining the direct and relayed components. A multiple-input multiple-output two-way relay channel consisting of two communication nodes and a full-duplex relay node in which no direct link exists between the two communication nodes is considered. We propose an achievable scheme that employs horizontally encoded lattice codes combined with generalized singular value decomposition-based precoding for the first phase. The second phase of the proposed scheme follows the fundamentals of the previous scheme, which uses vertically encoded structural bining, with the only difference that the added codeword of the two codewords from the communication nodes, instead of those two individual codewords, is decoded and retransmitted in the proposed scheme. This paper addresses a hierarchical decode-and-forward (HDF) strategy in the wireless two-way relay channel (2-WRC). This strategy uses a Hierarchical eXclusive Code (HXC) that allows full decoding of the hierarchical symbols at the relay. The HXC represents two data sources only through the exclusive law and requires side information on the complementary data at the destination (which naturally holds for the 2-WRC). The HDF strategy has the advantage over classical medium-access control (MAC) stage relaying with joint decoding in that its rate region extends beyond the classical MAC region. We present a layered design of the HXC codebook, which uses an arbitrary outer state-of-the-art capacity-approaching code [e.g., low density parity check (LDPC)] and an inner layer with an exclusive symbol alphabet. We provide basic theorems, showing that this scheme forms an HXC, and we also evaluate its alphabet-constrained rate regions. The rate regions depend on the relative channel phase parameters. Some channel rotation leads to catastrophic violation of the exclusive law. We investigate the effects of user cooperation on the secrecy of broadcast channels by considering a cooperative relay broadcast channel. We show that user cooperation can increase the achievable secrecy region. We propose an achievable scheme that combines Marton's coding scheme for broadcast channels and Cover and El Gamal's compress-and-forward scheme for relay channels. We derive outer bounds for the rate-equivocation region using auxiliary random variables for single-letterization. Finally, we consider a Gaussian channel and show that both users can have positive secrecy rates, which is not possible for scalar Gaussian broadcast channels without cooperation. In this work, the bidirectional broadcast channel (BBC) with confidential messages is studied. The problem is motivated by the concept of bidirectional relaying in a three-node network, where a half-duplex relay node establishes a bidirectional communication between two other nodes using a decode-and-forward protocol and thereby transmits additional confidential information to one of them in the broadcast phase. The corresponding confidential message is transmitted at a certain secrecy level which characterizes the amount of information that can be kept secret from the non-legitimate node. The capacity-equivocation and secrecy capacity regions of the BBC with confidential messages are established where the latter characterizes the communication scenario with perfect secrecy, which means that the confidential information is completely hidden from the non-legitimate node. Thereby, it is shown that the optimal processing exploits ideas and concepts of the BBC with common messages and of the classical broadcast channel with confidential messages. This paper addresses network code design for robust transmission of sources over an orthogonal two-hop wireless network with a broadcasting relay. The network consists of multiple sources and destinations in which each destination, benefiting the relay signal, intends to decode a subset of the sources. Two special instances of this network are orthogonal broadcast relay channel and the orthogonal multiple access relay channel. The focus is on complexity constrained scenarios, e.g., for wireless sensor networks, where channel coding is practically imperfect. Taking a source-channel and network coding approach, we design the network code (mapping) at the relay such that the average reconstruction distortion at the destinations is minimized. To this end, by decomposing the distortion into its components, an efficient design algorithm is proposed. The resulting network code is nonlinear and substantially outperforms the best performing linear network code. A motivating formulation of a family of structured nonlinear network codes is also presented. Numerical results and comparison with linear network coding at the relay and the corresponding distortion-power bound demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed schemes and a promising research direction. A Gaussian Interference Channel (IC) is investigated in which a relay assists two source-destination pairs. The relay is assumed to receive over dedicated orthogonal channels from the sources (e.g., over orthogonal bands or time slots, or over wired links), while it transmits in the same band as the sources. This scenario is referred to as IC assisted by an out-of-band reception/ in-band transmission relay (IC-OIR). An achievable rate region is derived for the IC-OIR that encompasses, besides the standard signal relaying, interference management via interference relaying, cancellation and precoding. The sum-capacity is found in a specific regime defined by the very strong relay-interference conditions. Numerical results validate the performance gains of interference mitigation via the relay. We consider the design of bilayer-expurgated low-density parity-check (BE-LDPC) codes as part of a decode-and-forward protocol for use over the full-duplex relay channel. A new ensemble of codes, termed multi-edge-type bilayer-expurgated LDPC (MET-BE-LDPC) codes, is introduced where the BE-LDPC code design problem is transformed into the problem of optimizing the multinomials of a multi-edge-type LDPC code. We propose two design strategies for optimizing MET-BE-LDPC codes; the bilayer approach is preferred when the difference in SNR between the source-to-relay and the source-to-destination channels is small, while the bilayer approach with intermediate rates is preferred when this difference is large. In both proposed design strategies multi-edge-type density evolution is used for code optimization. Two-way wireless communication has regained significant attention recently over relay channels and network coding techniques have been adopted to improve the spectral efficiency. In the literature, most works assumed knowledge of the channel state information at the transmitter (CSIT) and focused mainly on the three-step network coding (NetC) and two-step superposition coding (SupC) schemes. This work instead targets systems without CSIT and explores in detail the features and limitations of SupC and NetC under both the two-step and three-step frameworks. Equal-rate bi-directional traffic is considered and a comparative study of the schemes is provided. The maximum goodput and robustness to channel knowledge discrepancies are evaluated. Key results include theoretically derived outage regions and performance, and the analysis of the complementary role of NetC and SupC. Special features of the three-step framework and a simple yet efficient protocol, adaptive relay-assisted and direct transmission (ARDT), which smartly exploits the direct link in the absence of CSIT, will also be presented. Optimal power allocation at the relay is also derived for the three-step SupC scheme by exploiting the channel reciprocity (no CSIT required). Cooperative communications have received considerable attention for wireless multimedia applications as a technique to improve reliability and service coverage. To apply such cooperation over slow fading channels, we consider exploiting the spatial diversity in multiple relay networks. In this paper, we focus on amplify-and-forward relaying schemes, namely, orthogonal amplify-and-forward, selective relaying, and distributed beamforming, for the cooperative wireless multimedia transmission. Furthermore, the successive refinement source coding is exploited such that the multimedia signal is encoded into multiple layers and the quality of its reconstruction at the receiver is improved when more layers are received correctly. We study two strategies for the layered source transmission, namely, progressive transmission and superposition coding. With our developed framework, we propose suboptimal resource allocation algorithms to efficiently assign rate, power, and channel uses to different layers so as to maximize the quality of the multimedia signal reconstructed at the receiver. The proposed optimization methodology is simple and only requires the knowledge of the channel statistics compared to the existing algorithms. As a result, the receiver only requires to feedback the determined rate, power, and channel uses to the transmitter whenever the channel statistics or the layered source transmission strategy changes. Network coding and cooperative communication have received considerable attention from the research community recently in order to mitigate the adverse effects of fading in wireless transmissions and at the same time to achieve high throughput and better spectral efficiency. In this work, we design and analyze deterministic and random network coding schemes for a cooperative communication setup with multiple sources and destinations. We show that our schemes outperform conventional cooperation in terms of the diversity-multiplexing tradeoff (DMT). Specifically, it can offer the maximum diversity order at the expense of a slightly reduced multiplexing rate. We derive the necessary and sufficient conditions to achieve the maximum diversity order. We show that when the parity-check matrix for a systematic maximum distance separable (MDS) code is used as the network coding matrix, the maximum diversity is achieved. We present two ways to generate full-diversity network coding matrices: namely using the Cauchy matrices and the Vandermonde matrices. In this paper, a novel transmission scheme which incorporates network coding into rateless transmission over relay networks is proposed. This technique allows partial information about the upcoming message block to be transmitted during the current block transmission, hence reducing the required number of transmissions and improving the spectral efficiency. Different techniques for applying network coding to several fading models are discussed, and their relationships to an erasure channel model is explained. An optimisation of the network coding weight is given, and we show that by choosing the weight that minimizes the duration of the current block transmission and sending sufficient information about subsequent block, we can improve the overall performance.
