Vehicular networks are envisioned to deliver data transmission services ubiquitously, especially in the upcoming autonomous driving era. Accordingly, the high data traffic load poses a heavy burden to the terrestrial network infrastructure. Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) show enormous potential to assist vehicular networks in providing services. In a dense UAV-assisted vehicular network with a large number of users, spectrum sharing is leveraged for alleviating the spectrum scarcity. However, the increasing data traffic still leads to the UAV energy consumption problem. This paper considers a specific network scenario where a UAV transmits its cached content files to vehicular users over UAV-to-vehicle (U2V) links while vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) links reuse the U2V spectrum for safety-critical message exchanges. To improve the UAV's energy efficiency while guaranteeing users’ quality of service (QoS), we jointly optimize content placement, spectrum allocation, co-channel link pairing, and power control, which are the key factors affecting energy efficiency and QoS. The joint optimization problem is formulated as a mixed-integer nonlinear programming (MINLP) problem, which is solved by combining Hungarian and DDQN. We perform system performance evaluations, demonstrating that our approach can not only improve the UAV's energy efficiency while satisfying the users’ QoS requirements but also increase the timeliness of making decisions. Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) Base Station (BS) placement optimization is an essential operational task to improve the Quality of Service (QoS) in UAV-aided wireless cellular networks. The existing approaches are almost zeroth order methods, and the few first order methods mainly ignore the allocation fairness, computational efficiency, and backhaul constraints. In this paper, we formulate the UAV placement problem as a constrained optimization problem, with the objective of maximizing the fair coverage versus energy consumption while satisfying the backhaul constraints at different time nodes. To guarantee fair QoS allocation, we introduce a novel fairness index to ensure fair communication opportunity and the novel region coverage ratio to avoid excess QoS on covered spots. An accurate and efficient proximal stochastic gradient descent based alternating algorithm that iteratively executes two optimization steps is proposed to optimize the UAV locations, which enables the fast single point-based first order methods to solve the complex problems with constraints. Experiment results manifest that the proposed algorithm performs well both in synthetic data scenario and in real city scenario. This paper investigates the energy-efficient power allocation strategy for multi-user mmWave non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) system with different hybrid precoding (HP) structures. Particularly, we consider the fully-access HP structure and the subarray HP structure, respectively. For these two structures, the finite resolution analog precoder is realized through a low-power switches and inverters (SI) network. In the NOMA system, multiple users are first paired according to their channel correlation and gain difference. Following this, we propose hybrid precoding schemes for the low-power SI-based HP structures. Then, a power allocation (PA) problem is formulated to maximize the energy efficiency of the system, subject to per-cluster’ power constraints and per-user’ quality of service constraints. To solve the non-convex PA optimization problem, we devise a suboptimal solution with two-stage PA strategies. Furthermore, the PA problem aiming at conditionally maximizing the spectrum efficiency is also analyzed. Simulation results show that the proposed mmWave-NOMA can achieve higher energy efficiency than the existing mmWave-NOMA scheme and the conventional mmWave orthogonal multiple access scheme. Energy efficiency is a critical issue in the management of data centers, which form the backbone of cloud computing. Virtual resource management has a significant impact on improving the energy efficiency of data centers. Despite the progress in this area, virtual resource management has been considered mainly at two separate levels: application assignment and virtual machine placement. It has not been well-investigated in a unified framework for both levels, limiting further improvement in the energy efficiency of data centers. To address this issue, this paper proposes the virtual resource management problem for energy efficiency as a constrained optimization problem. Then, this paper simplifies the problem through profile-guided task classification and problem decomposition for complexity reduction and improved energy efficiency. After that, a three-phase framework and algorithms are presented for profiling and profile updating, task classification and application assignment, and successive virtual machine placement. Energy Harvesting (EH) technology enables Device-to-Device (D2D) User Equipments (DUEs) to harvest energy from ambient energy, making contributions to green communications and breaking the single battery-powered and the regional limitations of device deployment. The joint problem of energy harvesting and resource allocation in EH-based D2D Communication Networks (EH-DCNs) is a challenge issue. In this paper, we investigate the joint problem of resource allocation and EH time slot allocation of DUEs in EH-DCNs, where the DUEs harvest energy and multiplex Cellular User Equipments (CUEs) uplink resources. A channel assignment, power allocation and EH time slot allocation problem in EH-DCNs is formulated. The goal is to maximize energy- and spectral-efficiency with α-fairness while guaranteeing the EH constraints of DUEs and the quality of service of CUEs. The formulated problem is a non-convex mixed-integer multi-objective optimization problem. In order to solve the formulated problem, the multi-objective optimization problem is transformed into a single-objective optimization problem based on the weight sum method. We propose a joint iterative algorithm based on Lagrangian dual decomposition for α > 0 and α = 0, respectively. Non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) has attracted both academic and industrial interest since it has been considered as one of the promising 5G technologies in order to increase connectivity and spectral efficiency. In this paper, we focus on a downlink multicarrier (MC) NOMA network, where a single base station serves a set of users through multiple subchannels. The goal is to jointly optimize energy efficiency (EE) and fairness among users with respect to the subcarrier and power allocation parameters. To achieve this with acceptable complexity, a novel greedy subcarrier assignment scheme based on the worst-user first principle is proposed. Due to the fractional form of the EE expression and the existence of interference, the power allocation problem is non-convex and NP-hard. To this end, we first transform this into an equivalent subtractive form, which is then solved by using fractional programming with sequential optimization of the inter/intra-subchannel power allocation vectors. Simulation results reveal the effectiveness of the proposed scheme in terms of EE and fairness among users compared to baseline schemes. In this paper, a fundamental study of energy efficiency (EE) optimization for coordinated multi-point (CoMP) simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT) heterogeneous networks (HetNets) is provided. We aim to optimize the EE while satisfying certain quality-of-service requirements in regard to transmission rate and energy harvesting at both the macro cell and small cells. The corresponding joint beamforming and power allocation in the presence of intra- and inter-cell interference constitutes an EE maximization problem that is non-convex, and hence, very challenging to solve. In order to solve this problem, we propose to separate the beamforming design and power allocation processes. First, we adopt linear zero-forcing (ZF) beamforming to suppress the multi-user interference from both the energy harvesting users (EH-UEs) as well as the information decoding UEs (ID-UEs), thus transforming the HetNet under consideration to a virtual point-to-point system. An efficient power allocation algorithm is then developed to maximize the corresponding EE. On the other hand, the ZF strategy does not utilize the notion that interference benefits the EH-UEs. As a result, we propose a partial ZF approach by differentiating the EH-UEs and ID-UEs in order to further improve the EE. Energy efficiency aspects in cellular networks can contribute significantly to reducing worldwide greenhouse gas emissions. The base station (BS) sleeping strategy has become a well-known technique to achieve energy savings by switching off redundant BSs mainly for lightly loaded networks. Moreover, introducing renewable energy as an alternative power source has become a real challenge among network operators. In this paper, we formulate an optimization problem that aims to maximize the profit of Long-Term Evolution (LTE) cellular operators and to simultaneously minimize the \CO2 emissions in green wireless cellular networks without affecting the desired quality of service (QoS). The BS sleeping strategy lends itself to an interesting implementation using several heuristic approaches, such as the genetic (GA) and particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithms. In this paper, we propose GA-based and PSO-based methods that reduce the energy consumption of BSs by not only shutting down underutilized BSs but by optimizing the amounts of energy procured from different retailers (renewable energy and electricity retailers), as well. In this paper, the total system effective capacity (EC) maximization problem for the uplink transmission, in a multi-user multi-carrier orthogonal frequency division multiple access system, is formulated as a combinatorial integer programming problem, subject to each user’s link-layer energy efficiency (EE) requirement as well as the individual’s average transmission power limit. To solve this challenging problem, we first decouple it into a frequency provisioning problem and an independent multi-carrier link-layer EE–EC tradeoff problem for each user. In order to obtain the subcarrier assignment solution, a low-complexity heuristic algorithm is proposed, which not only offers close-to-optimal solutions, while serving as many users as possible, but also has a complexity linearly relating to the size of the problem. After obtaining the subcarrier assignment matrix, the multi-carrier link-layer EE–EC tradeoff problem for each user is formulated and solved by using Karush–Kuhn–Tucker conditions. The per-user optimal power allocation strategy, which is across both frequency and time domains, is then derived. Further, we theoretically investigate the impact of the circuit power and the EE requirement factor on each user’s EE level and optimal average power value. The low-complexity heuristic algorithm is then simulated to compare with the traditional exhaustive algorithm and a fair-exhaustive algorithm. Simulation results confirm our proofs and design intentions, and further show the effects of delay quality-of-service exponent, the total number of users, and the number of subcarriers on the system tradeoff performance. Energy-efficiency (EE) is critical for device-to-device (D2D) enabled cellular networks due to limited battery capacity and severe cochannel interference. In this paper, we address the EE optimization problem by adopting a stable matching approach. The NP-hard joint resource allocation problem is formulated as a one-to-one matching problem under two-sided preferences, which vary dynamically with channel states and interference levels. A game-theoretic approach is employed to analyze the interactions and correlations among user equipments (UEs), and an iterative power allocation algorithm is developed to establish mutual preferences based on nonlinear fractional programing. We then employ the Gale–Shapley algorithm to match D2D pairs with cellular UEs, which is proved to be stable and weak Pareto optimal. We provide a theoretical analysis and description for implementation details and algorithmic complexity. We also extend the algorithm to address scalability issues in large-scale networks by developing tie-breaking and preference-deletion-based matching rules. Simulation results validate the theoretical analysis and demonstrate that significant performance gains of average EE and matching satisfactions can be achieved by the proposed algorithm. In this paper, we consider energy usage in a three-node, two-way relay system with stochastic data arrivals and Gaussian channels. Specifically, we allow for a set of transmission modes, assuming a multiaccess uplink transmission with the relay as an optimal multiuser receiver, and find the optimal allocation of time and energy resources to the modes. In the downlink, we introduce three transmission strategies, namely, orthogonal transmission of a digital network-coded message and the remainder of the longer source message over time, superposition coding of the digital network-coded message and the remainder of the longer message, and superposition of the two source messages. We then minimize total energy usage subject to queue stability constraints at all nodes for a given pair of average packet arrival rates. The total energy usage of these three strategies in the downlink is compared, and it is found that it is best to use superposition of the network-coded message and the remaining bits in the downlink. To study stability, we present an analysis of the queues at each node under a random scheduling protocol that closely approximates the theoretical design through a Markov chain model. In heterogeneous networks (HetNets), energy-efficient resource allocation and intercell-interference management are important issues. In this paper, we address these issues using a two-level dynamic scheme. First, we assign the MUs with the optimum number of subchannels that achieves an operator's required balance between macro users' satisfaction and maximization of network efficiency. Then, the remaining subchannels are left to be shared by a number of small cells. In the latter step, a transmit power adaptation method using a noncooperative game-theoretic approach is developed to reduce cochannel interference in the whole network. The problem is formulated by allowing multiple neighboring small cells to share each subchannel (i.e., universal frequency reuse in the small cell level). We fully characterize the pricing factor in the penalty part of the utility function. The existence and uniqueness of the Nash equilibrium (NE) are analyzed and proved. Then, a distributed iterative algorithm based on the fixed-point theorem is proposed to attain the equilibrium of the game. Taking full advantage of both heterogeneous networks and cloud access radio access networks, heterogeneous cloud radio access networks (H-CRANs) are presented to enhance both spectral and energy efficiencies, where remote radio heads (RRHs) are mainly used to provide high data rates for users with high quality of service (QoS) requirements, whereas the high-power node (HPN) is deployed to guarantee seamless coverage and serve users with low-QoS requirements. To mitigate the intertier interference and improve energy efficiency (EE) performances in H-CRANs, characterizing user association with RRH/HPN is considered in this paper, and the traditional soft fractional frequency reuse (S-FFR) is enhanced. Based on the RRH/HPN association constraint and the enhanced S-FFR, an energy-efficient optimization problem with the resource assignment and power allocation for the orthogonal-frequency-division-multiple-access-based H-CRANs is formulated as a nonconvex objective function. To deal with the nonconvexity, an equivalent convex feasibility problem is reformulated, and closed-form expressions for the energy-efficient resource allocation solution to jointly allocate the resource block and transmit power are derived by the Lagrange dual decomposition method. Energy efficiency (EE) is very crucial for future wireless communication systems, especially for cognitive radio networks (CRNs). The EE performance relies on channel state information (CSI) of channels. Besides, the interference from secondary users (SUs) to primary users (PUs) also closely depends on CSI in underlay CRNs. However, available works on EE usually assume that CSI is perfect, which is often inaccurate in practical systems. Thus, in this paper we investigate the robust EE maximization problem in underlay CRNs with multiple SUs and PUs. Assuming CSI error to be bounded, we consider that all channels lie in some bounded uncertainty regions. From the perspective of worst-case optimization, we formulate it as the max-min problem with infinite constraint, which is nontrivial even without this constraint. This is because that the outer-maximization problem is non-convex and the inner-minimization problem is a concave minimization problem known as NP-hard in general. We propose a scheme to handle this problem via the fractional programming and global optimization techniques. Particularly, we efficiently solve this problem in two special cases. Simulation results validate that our proposed scheme can improve the worst-case EE of SUs distinctly and strictly guarantee the quality-of-service (QoS) of PUs under all parameters' uncertainties. The widespread application of multimedia wireless services and requirements of ubiquitous access have triggered rapidly booming energy consumption at both the base station side and the user equipment (UE) side. Hence, energy-efficient design in wireless networks is very important and is becoming an inevitable trend. In this paper, we study the energy-efficient resource allocation in both downlink and uplink cellular networks with orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA). For the downlink transmission, the generalized energy efficiency (EE) is maximized while for the uplink case the minimum individual EE is maximized, both under certain prescribed per-UE quality-of-service (QoS) requirements. For both transmission scenarios, we first provide the optimal solution and then develop a suboptimal but low-complexity approach by exploring the inherent structure and property of the energy-efficient design. For the downlink case, by modifying the original problem, we also find a computationally efficient and numerically tractable upper bound on the EE, which indicates the performance limit and is demonstrated to be quite tight if the number of subcarriers is larger than that of UEs and motivates us to find a near-optimal approach relying on the quasiconcave relation between the modified EE and transmit power. Simulation results show that the energy-efficient design greatly improves EE compared with the conventional spectral-efficient design and the low-complexity suboptimal approaches can achieve a promising tradeoff between performance and complexity.
