Triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) are regarded as a promising technology to drive the development of flexible/wearable electronics and self-powering sensor. Application of cellulose paper as the triboelectric positive materials makes TENGs more environmentally friendly. However, the limited output performance and stability in harsh environments and oxidation and corrosion of the metal electrodes have limited the practical application of cellulose paper based triboelectric nanogenerators (CPTENGs). Here, we have integrated cellulose paper-based triboelectric material and electrode in one sheet by using multi-layer forming technology in paper industry; the upper triboelectric layer shows excellent triboelectric positive performance, hydrophobicity and acid and alkali resistance, while the bottom electrode exhibits promise conductivity. The all CPTENGs can yield a maximum open-circuit voltage (V OC) of 227.1 V, a short-circuit current (I SC) of 6.9 μA. Furthermore, the V OC values of the all CPTENGs increase from 0.02 V to 225.1 V at the load resistance of 100 Ω∼10 GΩ; and a power density of 520 mW·m−2 is also obtained at a load resistance of 30 MΩ. Moreover, the V OC of CPTENGs not only retains up to 78 % of its initial value at a high relative humidity of 90 %, but also almost maintains unchanged in a wide range of the pH environment (pH = 1∼13). More importantly, the CPTENGs can be readily matched with paper-based zinc supercapacitor (P-ZISC) to act as an all paper based self-charging power system (PSCPS). In complex environments a single visible image is not good enough to perceive the environment, this paper proposes a novel dual-stream real-time detector designed for target detection in extreme environments such as nighttime and fog, which is able to efficiently utilise both visible and infrared images to achieve Fast All-Weatherenvironment sensing (FAWDet). Firstly, in order to allow the network to process information from different modalities simultaneously, this paper expands the state-of-the-art end-to-end detector YOLOv8, the backbone is expanded in parallel as a dual stream. Then, for purpose of avoid information loss in the process of network deepening, a cross-modal feature enhancement module is designed in this study, which enhances each modal feature by cross-modal attention mechanisms, thus effectively avoiding information loss and improving the detection capability of small targets. In addition, for the significant differences between modal features, this paper proposes a three-stage fusion strategy to optimise the feature integration through the fusion of spatial, channel and overall dimensions. It is worth mentioning that the cross-modal feature fusion module adopts an end-to-end training approach. Extensive experiments on two datasets validate that the proposed method achieves state-of-the-art performance in detecting small targets. The cross-modal real-time detector in this study not only demonstrates excellent stability and robust detection performance, but also provides a new solution for target detection techniques in extreme environments. Magadiite, a rare hydrous sodium-silicate mineral [NaSi 7 O 13 (OH) 3 ·4(H 2 O)], was discovered about 50 years ago in sediments around Lake Magadi, a hypersaline alkaline lake fed by hot springs in the semi-arid southern Kenya Rift Valley. Today this harsh lacustrine environment excludes most organisms except microbial extremophiles, a few invertebrates (mostly insects), highly adapted fish (Alcolapia sp.), and birds including flamingos. Burrows discovered in outcrops of the High Magadi Beds (~25-9 ka) that predate the modern saline (trona) pan show that beetles and other invertebrates inhabit this extreme environment when conditions become more favourable. Burrows (cm-scale) preserved in magadiite in the High Magadi Beds are filled with mud, silt and sand from overlying sediments. Their stratigraphic context reveals upward-shallowing cycles from mud to interlaminated mud-magadiite to magadiite in dm-scale units. The burrows were formed when the lake floor became fresher and oxygenated, after a period when magadiite precipitated in shallow saline waters. The burrows, probably produced by beetles, show that trace fossils can provide evidence for short-term (possibly years to decades) changes in the contemporary environment that might not otherwise be recognised or preserved physically or chemically in the sediment record.

The enzymes from hyperthermophilic microorganisms populating volcanic sites represent interesting cases of protein adaptation and biotransformations under conditions where conventional enzymes quickly denature. The difficulties in cultivating extremophiles severely limit access to this class of biocatalysts. To circumvent this problem, we embarked on the exploration of the biodiversity of the solfatara Pisciarelli, Agnano (Naples, Italy), to discover hyperthermophilic carbohydrate-active enzymes (CAZymes) and to characterize the entire set of such enzymes in this environment (CAZome). Here, we report the results of the metagenomic analysis of two mud/water pools that greatly differ in both temperature and pH (T = 85 °C and pH 5.5; T = 92 °C and pH 1.5, for Pool1 and Pool2, respectively). DNA deep sequencing and following in silico analysis led to 14 934 and 17 652 complete ORFs in Pool1 and Pool2, respectively. They exclusively belonged to archaeal cells and viruses with great genera variance within the phylum Crenarchaeota, which reflected the difference in temperature and pH of the two Pools. Surprisingly, 30% and 62% of all of the reads obtained from Pool1 and 2, respectively, had no match in nucleotide databanks. Genes associated with carbohydrate metabolism were 15% and 16% of the total in the two Pools, with 278 and 308 putative CAZymes in Pool1 and 2, corresponding to ~ 2.0% of all ORFs. Biochemical characterization of two CAZymes of a previously unknown archaeon revealed a novel subfamily GH5_19 β-mannanase/β-1,3-glucanase whose hemicellulose specificity correlates with the vegetation surrounding the sampling site, and a novel NAD + -dependent GH109 with a previously unreported β-N-acetylglucosaminide/β-glucoside specificity. Terrestrial artiodactyls (even-toed ungulates) inhabit some of the world's most extreme environments, including arid deserts and high elevations. As medium-to-large-bodied mammals, artiodactyls have a suite of specialized physiologies to facilitate occupation of regions unavailable to other large mammals. One such physiology is selective brain cooling, wherein reduction of brain temperature below core body temperature has been demonstrated to reduce evaporative water loss. This physiology is enabled by an arterial heat-exchanger called the carotid rete. The ubiquity of the carotid rete throughout the clade, as well as its evolutionary history, is currently uninvestigated. Here, I use osteological correlates to survey clade-wide presence and morphology of the carotid rete, prior to conducting a preliminary evolutionary analysis. Nearly all living artiodactyls possess a carotid rete and are capable of selective brain cooling; however, major arteries supplying the rete are derived from different embryonic aortic arches on a suborder-specific basis. Ancestral character estimation infers this pattern of variation to be the result of independent evolutionary processes, suggesting carotid rete homoplasy arising via parallelism. This is a surprising finding given the role this structure plays in driving a physiology that has been implicated in mitigating artiodactylan responses to extreme environmental conditions. Future studies should incorporate extinct species represented in the fossil record to better parse between parallel and convergent mechanisms, as well as to better understand the relationship between the carotid rete, selective brain cooling, and survivorship of climate perturbation. In plant ecology, extreme environments are those that pose physiological or other limitations to plant growth, especially for non-adapted taxa. In these environments, the severity of climate conditions and/or the limitations imposed by particular soil substrates represent major selective pressures for plants, leading to the evolution of a wide array of functional traits, specific strategies and adapted taxa. In this special issue, we present a collection of papers that focuses on plants in various extreme environments, including the Arctic and Antarctic, regions with serpentine and gypsum soils, high mountain areas and deserts. The papers include a broad array of methods to study the ecology and evolution of plants in extreme environments, such as field surveys, greenhouse and field experiments, molecular phylogenetic analyses and/or physiological measurements. Overall, this special issue showcases research on how plants thrive in extreme environments which, in turn, may provide pointers to how plant communities might respond to living in increasingly challenging environments resulting from unprecedented land-use changes and climate warming at the present time and in the future. Radiation hardening of power MOSFETs (metal oxide semiconductor field effect transistors) is of the highest priority for sustaining high-power systems in the space radiation environment. Silicon carbide (SiC)-based power electronics are being investigated as a strong alternative for high power spaceborne power electronic systems. SiC MOSFETs have been shown to be most prone to single-event burnout (SEB) from space radiation. The current knowledge of SiC MOSFET device degradation and failure mechanisms are reviewed in this paper. Additionally, the viability of radiation tolerant SiC MOSFET designs and the modeling methods of SEB phenomena are evaluated. A merit system is proposed to consider the performance of radiation tolerance and nominal electrical performance. Criteria needed for high-fidelity SEB simulations are also reviewed. As arid lands expand across the globe, scholars increasingly turn to the archaeological record for examples of sustainable farming in extreme environments. The arid north coast of Peru was the setting of early and intensive irrigation-based farming; it is also periodically impacted by sudden, heavy rainfall related to the El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) phenomenon. While the sociopolitical effects, technologies, and engineering expertise of these irrigation systems have been thoroughly examined and theorized, little is known about how farmers managed periods of water stress. The aim of this study is to test whether arid zone farming was supported by hybrid, intermittent flood and perennial water source systems in the prehispanic past. An arroyo in the Chicama Valley was selected for preliminary data collection, and these data are presented here: (1) drone photography of the arroyo capturing the aftermath of a recent (2023) rain event; and (2) potassium (K) soil test kit results from samples collected near suspected prehispanic check dam features in the same area. The paper combines these data with comparative examples from the literature to suggest that the prehispanic features functioned as water-harvesting infrastructure. SiC devices have been typically subjected to extreme environments and complex stresses during operation, such as intense radiation and large diurnal amplitude differences on the lunar surface. Radiation displacement damage may lead to degradation or failure of the performance of semiconductor devices. In this paper, the effects of temperature and incidence angle on the irradiation cascade effect of 6H-SiC were investigated separately using the principles of molecular dynamics. Temperatures were set to 100 K, 150 K, 200 K, 250 K, 300 K, 350 K, 400 K and 450 K. The incidence direction was parallel to the specified crystal plane, with angles of 8°, 15°, 30°, 45°, 60° and 75° to the negative direction of the Z-axis. In this paper, the six types of defects were counted, and the microscopic distribution images and trajectories of each type of defect were extracted. The results show a linear relationship between the peak of the Frenkel pair and temperature. The recombination rate of Frenkel pairs depends on the local temperature and degree of aggregation at the center of the cascade collision. Increasing the angle of incidence first inhibits and then promotes the production of total defects and Frenkel pairs. The lowest number of total defects, Frenkel pairs and antisite defects are produced at a 45° incident angle. At an incidence angle of 75°, larger size hollow clusters and anti-clusters are more likely to appear in the 6H-SiC. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The area of permafrost worldwide accounts for approximately 20% to 25% of land area. In cold-climate regions of China, which are garnering international attention, the study of low-temperature and moisture effects on rock mass mechanical properties is of significant importance. China has a wide area of cold regions. This research can provide a foundation for China's exploration activities in such extreme environments. This paper examines the mechanical behavior of rock specimens subjected to various low temperatures and water contents through uniaxial compression tests. The analysis encompasses failure modes, stress–strain relationships, uniaxial compressive strength (UCS), and elastic modulus (EM) of these specimens. Findings reveal that at lower temperatures, the rock specimens' fracture patterns transition from compressive shear failure to cleavage failure, reflecting a shift from a plastic–elastic–plastic to a plastic–elastic response. Specifically, saturated rocks exhibit a 40.8% decrease in UCS and an 11.4% reduction in EM compared to their dry counterparts. Additionally, in cold conditions, an increased water content in rocks primarily leads to vertical cracking. Under such conditions, saturated rocks show a 52.3% decline in UCS and a 15.2% reduction in EM, relative to their dry state. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Faced with the rapid development of large-scale pumped-storage power stations, the trade-off between the strength and toughness of hydropower steels in extreme environments has been limiting their application. The effects of Nb micro-alloying and direct quenching and tempering processes on the strengthening–toughening mechanism of 1000 MPa grade high-strength hydropower steel are studied in this paper, and the precipitation behavior of Nb is discussed. The results showed that only the 0.025Nb steel using the DQT process achieved a cryogenic impact energy of more than 100 J at −60 °C. Under the DQT process, a large number of deformation bands and dislocations were retained, refining the prior austenite grains and providing more nucleation sites for the precipitation of NbC during the cooling process. The DQT process has a more obvious local strain concentration, mainly focusing on the refined lath boundary, which indicates that the refinement of the microstructure also promotes the stacking of dislocations. The improvement in fine grain strengthening and dislocation strengthening by the DQT process jointly led to an increase in strength, resulting in a better combination of strength and toughness. This paper reports the results of gamma irradiation experiments and whole genome sequencing (WGS) performed on vegetative cells of two radiation resistant bacterial strains, Metabacillus halosaccharovorans (VITHBRA001) and Bacillus paralicheniformis (VITHBRA024) (D10 values 2.32 kGy and 1.42 kGy, respectively), inhabiting the top-ranking high background radiation area (HBRA) of Chavara-Neendakara placer deposit (Kerala, India). The present investigation has been carried out in the context that information on strategies of bacteria having mid-range resistance for gamma radiation is inadequate. WGS, annotation, COG and KEGG analyses and manual curation of genes helped us address the possible pathways involved in the major domains of radiation resistance, involving recombination repair, base excision repair, nucleotide excision repair and mismatch repair, and the antioxidant genes, which the candidate could activate to survive under ionizing radiation. Additionally, with the help of these data, we could compare the candidate strains with that of the extremely radiation resistant model bacterium Deinococccus radiodurans, so as to find the commonalities existing in their strategies of resistance on the one hand, and also the rationale behind the difference in D10, on the other. Genomic analysis of VITHBRA001 and VITHBRA024 has further helped us ascertain the difference in capability of radiation resistance between the two strains. Significantly, the genes such as uvsE (NER), frnE (protein protection), ppk1 and ppx (non-enzymatic metabolite production) and those for carotenoid biosynthesis, are endogenous to VITHBRA001, but absent in VITHBRA024, which could explain the former's better radiation resistance. Further, this is the first-time study performed on any bacterial population inhabiting an HBRA. This study also brings forward the two species whose radiation resistance has not been reported thus far, and add to the knowledge on radiation resistant capabilities of the phylum Firmicutes which are abundantly observed in extreme environment. Cable-driven parallel robots (CDPRs) offer significant advantages, such as the lightweight design, large workspace, and easy reconfiguration, making them essential for various spatial applications and extreme environments. However, despite their benefits, CDPRs face challenges, notably the uncertainty in terms of the post-reconstruction parameters, complicating cable coordination and impeding mechanism parameter identification. This is especially notable in CDPRs with redundant constraints, leading to cable relaxation or breakage. To tackle this challenge, this paper introduces a novel approach using reinforcement learning to drive redundant constrained cable-driven robots with uncertain parameters. Kinematic and dynamic models are established and applied in simulations and practical experiments, creating a conducive training environment for reinforcement learning. With trained agents, the mechanism is driven across 100 randomly selected parameters, resulting in a distinct directional distribution of the trajectories. Notably, the rope tension corresponding to 98% of the trajectory points is within the specified tension range. Experiments are carried out on a physical cable-driven device utilizing trained intelligent agents. The results indicate that the rope tension remained within the specified range throughout the driving process, with the end platform successfully maneuvered in close proximity to the designated target point. The consistency between the simulation and experimental results validates the efficacy of reinforcement learning in driving unknown parameters in redundant constraint-driven robots. Furthermore, the method's applicability extends to mechanisms with diverse configurations of redundant constraints, broadening its scope. Therefore, reinforcement learning emerges as a potent tool for acquiring motion data in cable-driven mechanisms with unknown parameters and redundant constraints, effectively aiding in the reconstruction process of such mechanisms. The yak (Poephagus grunniens) has evolved unique adaptations to survive the harsh environment of the Qinghai–Tibetan Plateau, while their gut microorganisms play a crucial role in maintaining the health of the animal. Gut microbes spread through the animal population not only by horizontal transmission but also vertically, which enhances microbial stability and inheritance between generations of the population. Homogenization of gut microbes in different animal species occurs in the same habitat, promoting interspecies coexistence. Using the yak as a model animal, this paper discusses the adaptive strategies under extreme environments, and how the gut microbes of the yak circulate throughout the Tibetan Plateau system, which not only affects other plateau animals such as plateau pikas, but can also have a profound impact on the health of people. By examining the relationships between yaks and their gut microbiota, this review offers new insights into the adaptation of yaks and their ecological niche on the Qinghai–Tibetan plateau. Data-driven machine learning techniques can be useful for the rapid evaluation of material properties in extreme environments, particularly in cases where direct access to the materials is not possible. Such problems occur in high-throughput material screening and material design approaches where many candidates may not be amenable to direct experimental examination. In this paper, we perform an exhaustive examination of the applicability of machine learning for the estimation of isothermal shock compression properties, specifically the shock Hugoniot, for diverse material systems. A comprehensive analysis is conducted where effects of scarce data, variances in source data, feature choices, and model choices are systematically explored. New modeling strategies are introduced based on feature engineering, including a feature augmentation approach, to mitigate the effects of scarce data. Natural fibres have recently gained attention as an alternative sustainable material for civil engineering applications due to natural fibres’ exceptional performance, including high strength, and their environmental-friendliness and cost-effectiveness. However, there are disadvantages to using natural fibres in extreme environments. Therefore, this paper reviewed the effect of moisture content and temperature on the tensile strength of potential natural fibres for engineering purposes. Furthermore, this paper also critically reviewed the influence of alkaline treatment on natural fibres’ tensile strength. This is significant because alkaline treatment enhances surface friction and the fraction of the revealed cellulose on the fibres’ surface, resulting in better mechanical interlocking. In conclusion, natural fibres demonstrate their potential for geotechnical applications due to the materials’ strong tensile properties after being subjected to treatment processes. Lead-cooled fast reactors (LFRs) are considered one of the most promising technologies to meet the requirements introduced for advanced nuclear systems. LFRs have higher neutron doses, higher temperatures, higher burnup and an extremely corrosive environment. The failure studies of claddings play a vital role in improving the safety criteria of nuclear reactors and promoting research on advanced nuclear materials. This paper presented a comprehensive review of the extreme environment in LFRs based on the fuel performance analyses and transient analyses of reference LFRs. It provided a clear image of cladding failure, focusing on the underlying mechanisms, such as creep, rupture, fatigue, swelling, corrosion, etc., which are resulted from the motions of defects, the development of microcracks and accumulation of fission products to some extent. Some fundamental parameters and behavior models of Ferritic/Martensitic (F/M) steels and Austenitic stainless (AuS) steels were summarized in this paper. The advantages of an event camera, such as low power consumption, large dynamic range, and low data redundancy, enable it to shine in extreme environments where traditional image sensors are not competent, especially in high-speed moving target capture and extreme lighting conditions. Optical flow reflects the target's movement information, and the target's detailed movement can be obtained using the event camera's optical flow information. However, the existing neural network methods for optical flow prediction of event cameras has the problems of extensive computation and high energy consumption in hardware implementation. The spike neural network has spatiotemporal coding characteristics, so it can be compatible with the spatiotemporal data of an event camera. Moreover, the sparse coding characteristic of the spike neural network makes it run with ultra-low power consumption on neuromorphic hardware. However, because of the algorithmic and training complexity, the spike neural network has not been applied in the prediction of the optical flow for the event camera. For this case, this paper proposes an end-to-end spike neural network to predict the optical flow of the discrete spatiotemporal data stream for the event camera. The network is trained with the spatio-temporal backpropagation method in a self-supervised way, which fully combines the spatiotemporal characteristics of the event camera while improving the network performance. Compared with the existing methods on the public dataset, the experimental results show that the method proposed in this paper is equivalent to the best existing methods in terms of optical flow prediction accuracy, and it can save 99% more power consumption than the existing algorithm, which is greatly beneficial to the hardware implementation of the event camera optical flow prediction., laying the groundwork for future low-power hardware implementation of optical flow prediction for event cameras. The diversity of flood‐generating mechanisms superimposed on catchment physiographic features with non‐stationary meteorological drivers makes future flood hazard assessment a grand challenge. To date, many studies have examined patterns in rainfall and streamflow, but far fewer have investigated trends in the other drivers of flooding. The complex transfer function between precipitation and flooding makes it potentially misleading to simply look at the change in rainfall to express the hazard. Furthermore, there are very few studies that have directly used output from km‐scale climate models in flood modeling. Coarse resolution climate data sets may not credibly resolve local climate and weather extremes. Changes in rainfall distribution and antecedent moisture over extended time periods due to climate change have so far been ignored when assessing urban pluvial flood risk. In this paper, an urban flood hazard assessment framework using the latest 2.2 km resolution UK Climate Projections Local is proposed. Global warming induced changes in pluvial flood risks under RCP8.5 are projected, focusing on the impact of changing precipitation patterns and soil moisture dynamics on flood generation. Results indicate a strong increase in the frequency of occurrence of extreme floods, and the resultant future (2060–2080) annual flood volume is expected to increase up to 52.6% relative to 1980–2000 over a major UK urban region, and these patterns are likely to hold more generally elsewhere in the UK. Shifts to a later occurrence of extreme flooding is identified under global warming. Previous studies that have neglected soil moisture dynamics are unlikely to give accurate flood estimates. Plain Language Summary: The future flood hazard status over the major UK urban region of Bristol (domain size ∼746 km2) is evaluated using the latest 12‐member UK Climate Projections Local ensemble rainfall data set at the hourly and kilometer scale. A total of 30,098 rainfall events from an equivalent 720 years of climate data are identified and used for flood modeling. Impact of changing precipitation pattern and soil moisture dynamics on surface water floods are evaluated, and the interaction between precipitation, inundation, infiltration, and soil wetness are handled simultaneously at a spatial resolution of ∼30 m or less using an improved hydrodynamic model (LISFLOOD‐FP). Our findings highlight a shift toward a later seasonal occurrence of extreme flooding under global warming. Specifically, a large proportion of future extreme flood hazards is projected to manifest in December, contrasting with historical trends where most extreme events occurred in November. Extreme precipitation can be magnified in rainy seasons due to amplified moisture convergence, while in dry periods limited moisture availability may offset precipitation increases. Despite an overall increase in the total annual rainfall volume, the future summer is anticipated to be much drier due to limited rainfall availability, leading to a further reduction in soil moisture availability. Objective: This paper surveys the existing literature surrounding problem-solving and team dynamics in complex and unpredictable scenarios, and evaluates the applicability of studying Earth-based construction teams to identify training needs for Lunar construction crews. Background: Lunar and other space exploration construction crews will work in extreme environments and face unpredictable challenges, necessitating real-time problem-solving to address unexpected contingencies. This work will require coordination with Mission Control and autonomous assistants, so crew training must account for multi-agent, distributed teamwork. Method: A narrative literature review identified processes, attributes, and skills necessary for the success of Lunar construction teams. We summarized relevant frameworks and synthesized collective findings into over-arching trends and remaining research gaps. Results: While significant literature exists surrounding team performance, very little systematic inquiry has been done with a focus on Lunar construction crews and operations, particularly with respect to dynamic problem-solving and team-based decision-making. Established and standardized metrics for evaluating team performance are lacking, resulting in significant variation in reported outcomes between studies. Conclusion: Lunar and other space exploration construction teams will need training that focuses on developing the right approach to team-based problem-solving, rather than on preparing response execution for known contingencies. An investigation of successful Earth-based construction crews may facilitate the development of relevant metrics for training future Lunar construction crews. Wolf Rock Lighthouse is a Victorian era masonry structure located in an extreme environment facing the fiercest Atlantic storms off the southwest coast of England whose dynamic behaviour has been studied since 2016. Initially, a modal test was used to determine modal parameters; then, in 2017, a monitoring system was installed that has operated intermittently providing response data for a number of characteristic loading events. These events have included wave loads due to storms, a small UK earthquake, helicopters landing on the helideck, and the grounding of a ship on the reef. This is believed to be the most extensive experimental campaign on any structure of this type. Viruses are nonliving biological entities whose host range encompasses all known forms of life. They are deceptively simple in description (a protein shell surrounding genetic material with an occasional lipid envelope) and yet can infect all known forms of life. Recently, due to technological advancements, viruses from more extreme environments can be studied through both culture-dependent and independent means. Viruses with thermophilic, halophilic, psychrophilic, and barophilic properties are highlighted in this paper with an emphasis on the properties that allow them to exist in said environments. Unfortunately, much of this field is extremely novel and thus, not much is yet known about these viruses or the microbes they infect when compared to non-extremophilic host–virus systems. Cavitation bubbles can be generated by introducing ultrasonic waves into the liquid. The growth and collapse of the bubbles transfer energy from ultrasonic waves to the gas mixture, resulting in the formation of an extreme environment with local high pressure and temperature, and then, multiple products (H2, ·OH, H·, O, H2O2, and so on) are produced. In the present study, the sonochemical characteristics inside an oxygen bubble have been investigated by using single bubble dynamics equations taking mass transfer, heat exchange, and chemical reactions into account. The effects of the equilibrium radius and static pressure on the temperature and the yields of H2, ·OH, and total oxidants inside the bubble are analyzed. There are optimal equilibrium radii that maximize gas temperature and the amounts of H2, ·OH, and total oxidants under different static pressures. We focus on three main areas of research: corporate governance in an international context, banking and corporate governance, and governance in entrepreneurship and innovation. The paper explores the potential of the biomorphic approach to context-based design with a focus on special-purpose mobility in the Arctic. The study seeks to contribute to the analytical and conceptual basis for developing the transport component of the Arctic life-support system, i.e., a set of objects and technologies, and knowledge and skills for handling them, allowing a person to survive and comfortably exist in severe environmental conditions. The central argument is that the system should incorporate structural components that possess not only technical but also artistic and emotional characteristics that align with the geographic (environmental and climatic), socio-cultural, and psychological peculiarities of use. Inspired by musculoskeletal systems in nature, this paper presents a pneumatically actuated quadruped robot which utilizes two soft–rigid hybrid rotary joints in each of the four two-degrees of freedom (DoF) planar legs. We first introduce the mechanical design of the rotary joint and the integrated quadruped robot with minimized onboard electronic components. Based on the unique design of the rotary joint, a joint-level PID-based controller was adopted to control the angular displacement of the hip and knee joints of the quadruped robot. Typical gait patterns for legged locomotion, including the walking and trotting gaits, were investigated and designed. Proof-of-concept prototypes of the rotary joint and the quadruped robot were built and tested. The experimental results demonstrated that the rotary joint generated a maximum torque of 5.83 Nm and the quadruped robot was capable of locomotion, achieving a trotting gait of 187.5 mm/s with a frequency of 1.25 Hz and a walking gait of 12.8 mm/s with a gait cycle of 7.84 s. This study reveals that, compared to soft-legged robots, the quadruped robot has a simplified analytical model for motion control, size scalability and high movement speeds, thereby exhibiting significant potential for applications in extreme environments. Radio‐photovoltaic cell is a micro nuclear battery for devices operating in extreme environments, which converts the decay energy of a radioisotope into electric energy by using a phosphor and a photovoltaic converter. Many phosphors with high light yield and good environmental stability have been developed, but the performance of radio‐photovoltaic cells remains far behind expectations in terms of power density and power conversion efficiency, because of the poor photoelectric conversion efficiency of traditional photovoltaic converters under low‐light conditions. This paper reports an radio‐photovoltaic cell based on an intrinsically stable formamidinium‐cesium perovskite photovoltaic converter exhibiting a wide light wavelength response from 300 to 800 nm, high open‐circuit voltage (VOC), and remarkable efficiency at low‐light intensity. When a He ions accelerator is adopted as a mimicked α radioisotope source with an equivalent activity of 0.83 mCi cm−2, the formamidinium‐cesium perovskite radio‐photovoltaic cell achieves a VOC of 0.498 V, a short‐circuit current (JSC) of 423.94 nA cm−2, and a remarkable power conversion efficiency of 0.886%, which is 6.6 times that of the Si reference radio‐photovoltaic cell, as well as the highest among all radio‐photovoltaic cells reported so far. Stratospheric drones operating in extreme environments are very important for predicting reliability and are high-efficiency, high-performance, and lightweight power units. Multilevel inverters are suitable for application as power conversion units for stratospheric drones. A guideline is needed to evaluate whether it is suitable for practical application from a reliability perspective among various multilevel topologies. Existing reliability prediction models cannot reflect the operating characteristics of multilevel inverters. In this paper, we analyze the driving characteristics of each topology from the perspective of half-bride, which is the basic configuration of multilevel inverters, and we propose a fault tree analysis (FTA) design with three operating modes. The proposed method has the advantage of being able to easily analyze the failure rate by expanding to single-phase and three-phase and to analyze the failure rate according to changes in modulation index (MI) and power factor (PF). The failure rates of the proposed method and the part count method are analyzed using MIL-HDBK-217F. We also analyze the impact of different various operating characteristics on the failure rate. The quantum precision magnetic measurement in high-pressure environments is of great significance for studying the evolution and structure of matter under an extreme environment. Given the challenges associated with achieving in-situ high-resolution magnetic detection under high pressure by using traditional methods, the proposed high-pressure quantum magnetic measurement based on solid-state color centres has made significant progress in recent years. This advancement is of great significance in advancing the study of matter under high pressure. And this paper primarily focuses on the research of quantum magnetic measurement using SiC color centres under high pressure. The optical and spin properties of silicon vacancy defects and divacancy defects in SiC under high pressure is reviewed. Furthermore, the magnetic phase transition of Nd2Fe14B is observed, and the critical temperature-pressure phase diagram of the superconductor YBa2Cu3O6.6 is mapped out. This work reviews and highlights the potential of silicon vacancy-based quantum sensors for in situ magnetic detection at high pressures. The wind abandonment phenomenon of cogeneration units in regional integrated energy systems (RIES) under the operation mode of "heat for electricity" and the improvement in the operation efficiency of the energy storage system under a low-temperature environment are problems that need to be solved urgently. To this end, a regional integrated energy system optimization scheduling method based on fine energy storage and wind power consumption is proposed in the paper. First, a fine energy storage model more adapted to a low-temperature environment is established on the power side to accurately simulate the actual working state of the energy storage components and quantify the uncertainty of the wind power output using the conditional value-at-risk (CVaR) theory. Then, a combined heat and power demand response mechanism is introduced on the load side to reduce the peak-to-valley difference in the heat and power loads, it is realized to promote the system's consumption of wind power without increasing the transmission power of the contact line. Finally, the example is solved on the MATLAB platform with the objective of minimizing the total cost of the RIES optimal dispatch. The simulation results show that the proposed model is not only more adaptable to a low-temperature environment compared with the traditional model but also reduces the overall cost of the system by 2.58% while realizing the complete consumption of wind power. This innovative study provides a feasible and efficient solution to improve the performance of integrated energy systems, especially the operation capability in extreme environments. Environmental chambers are a kind of equipment to simulate various conventional and extreme environments, which are usually applied to create various environmental conditions and conduct various studies related to environmental parameters. Through our review of literature of the past 30 years, environmental chambers have been mainly used in the following four aspects: pollutants' emission characterization, human thermal comfort research, products and materials development and transformation and the reaction and behaviour of other living bodies such as animals and plants. In this paper, the current application of environmental chambers is summarized based on the research objectives, conditions and technical means. The purpose of this paper is to provide a review of the use of environmental chambers for research and analyze the current application of environmental chambers for the future application of environmental chambers and explore the direction of its future transformation and application.
