In this study, CO storage capacity in unmineable coalbeds in China at depths of 1,000-2,000 m has been evaluated using the methodology recommended by CSLF. This evaluation is one part of the countrywide CO storage capacity evaluations in China, initiated by the Chinese Ministry of Land and Resources. This level of CO storage capacity evaluation gives a rough scale of assessment with the least site-specific detail. The results show that there is a storage capacity of 98.81 × 10 t CO in coalbed s buried at a depth range of 1,000-2,000 m and 4.26 × 10 m additional coalbed methane can be recovered by CO injection. These results appear to show great potential and an attractive economic perspective of CO storage in unmineable coalbeds in China. Another part of this study is to classify the potential coalbed basins based on CO storage capacity and storage capacity per unit area. To constrain the provenance of the Ordos Basin and the evolution history of the Qinling Orogen Belt from the Triassic to the Jurassic, 10 samples from the Dongsheng area and 28 samples from the Yan’an area were analyzed for U–Pb ages and Lu–Hf and Sm–Nd isotopic compositions. The results indicate that Middle Jurassic sediments in the Dongsheng area were derived from the Khondalite Belt, Langshan Mountain and the Yinshan Terrane. Mesozoic sediments in the Yan’an area consist of two parts. One part is derived from the North China Craton (NCC), which has U–Pb age groups of ∼1.8 Ga and ∼2.5 Ga, and Hf model ages of ∼2.8 Ga. The other part is derived from the Qilian–Qinling Orogenic Belt, which has U–Pb age groups of 600–1500 Ma and 100–500 Ma, and Nd and Hf isotopic model ages of less than 2.2 Ga. Combining the U–Pb ages with the Hf and Nd isotopic model ages, Mesozoic detrital zircons with U–Pb age groups of ∼1.8 Ga and ∼2.5 Ga in the Yan’an area are found to also be derived from the Khondalite Belt, Langshan Mountain and the Yinshan Terrane, not from the Trans-China Orogen Belt. From the late–Late Triassic sediments of the Yan’an area, the low average values of the Hf (2.03 Ga) and Nd (2.03 Ga) model ages and the characteristic age population of 600–1500 Ma reveal that the main collision or continental subduction between the NCC and the South China Craton (SCC) occurred in the late–Late Triassic. After the main collision or continental subduction, the proportion of sediments from the Qinling–Qilian Orogenic Belt began to decrease (recorded in the early Jurassic samples), which may be in response to the gradual slowing of the uplift speed of the Qinling Orogenic Belt. In the early-middle Jurassic, the sediments have a main U–Pb age population of 100–500 Ma, low detrital zircon Hf model ages (average value is 1.17 Ga) and low whole rock Nd model ages (average value is 1.13 Ga), which suggests that the Qilian–Qinling Orogenic Belt may have a fast uplift history in the early-middle Jurassic. An important hydrocarbon reservoir is hosted by the third member of the Shahejie Formation (Es3) in the Liuzan area, Nanpu Sag, Bohai Bay Basin, China. The Es3 can be divided into five third-order sequences (from base to top: Sq1, Sq2, Sq3, Sq4 and Sq5). Utilising well logs, cores and high-resolution 3-D seismic data, this study investigates the development characteristics and styles of sediment transport pathways in the steep-slope zone of the lacustrine rift basin. Two styles of sediment transport pathway are identified in the study area, including the faulted trough and fault slope-break zone. The faulted trough is divided into a single faulted trough, synthetic faulted trough and antithetic faulted trough. The fault slope-break zone is composed of synthetic fault slope-break zone and antithetic fault slope-break zone. The fan-delta plain and fan-delta front are recognised in the study area. The different styles of delivery conduits control depositional facies types and the spatial and temporal evolution of fan-delta depositional systems from Sq3 to Sq5. Based on paleo-geomorphological reconstruction, the dispersal pattern of the steep-slope zone system divided into a northern steep-slope system and an eastern steep-slope system is established. In Sq3, the northern steep-slope system develops large-scale mixed sandy-muddy fan-delta deposits derived from the NW. The eastern steep-slope system feeds the medium-scale gravel-rich fan-delta sediments. In Sq4, the large-scale mixed sandy-muddy fan-delta deposits develop from the NNE direction in the northern steep-slope system. The small-scale sand-rich fan-delta sediments are transported from the eastern steep-slope system. In Sq5, the large-scale mixed sand-mud fan-delta deposits are fed by both the northern steep-slope system and eastern steep-slope system. The strata stacking pattern exhibits a seesaw mode in the study area. Based on the analysis of the channel-belt thickness and the fan-scales, the paleogeomorphology of the drainage area in Sq3 and Sq4 and sediment supply in Sq5 alternatively control the sequence stratigraphic architecture and sediment partitioning in the sink area. Natural biofilms were simultaneously grown on glass, plexi-glass, glass fiber and activated carbon fiber for 60 days in a shallow Lake in Haihe basin. Biofilm production and abundance of algae were influenced by the substratum. Magnitude of the substratum effect was glass < plexi-glass < glass fiber < activated carbon fiber. The bacteria communities in biofilms of nature substrata were similar with the biofilms on plexi-glass and glass fiber after 60-day growing, as well as the ones on activated carbon fiber after 14-day growing. On basis of algological and bacteriological investigations, as well as literature data, the activated carbon fiber substratum is recommended for biomonitoring the lake in Haihe basin. The Permian Lucaogou Formation is an important hydrocarbon source rock in the Junggar, Turpan, and Santanghu basins in Xinjiang, NW China. For the first time, dolostones associated with mantle-originated exhalative hydrothermal fluid flows are discovered in Yuejingou section in the Santanghu Basin area. They include dolomicrite, doloarenite, and a small amount of dolorudite, and are finely (0.05-0.15 cm thick) interlaminated with lime micrite and dolomicritic analcime laminites. Alkali feldspar and analcime grains are common in doloarenite and are interpreted as having been derived from analcime phonolites and peralkaline magmatic rocks. These magmatic fragments were brought up from subsurface by hydrothermal fluid flow and had experienced exhalative brecciation, transport, and deposition on the lake floor. The matrix consists dominantly of dolomite and ankerite smaller than 0.01 mm. The dolostones can be subdivided into four types on the basis of mineral composition and content. The detrital analcime and alkaline feldspar grains and tuff lithics are interpreted as intraclasts, which were deposited in an under-filled starved lake basin. The δ values of dolostones are −5‰ to −21.1‰, and −11.9‰ on average; the Sr/Sr ratios of dolostones are 0.70457 to 0.706194, and 0.705005 on average. These values, in combination with evidence of multi-episodes of peralkaline extrusion, suggest a mantle origin of the hydrothermal fluids, which may have promoted primary dolomite formation. The fluid from the upper mantle caused serpentinization of ultramafic rocks that intruded into the lower crust to obtain Mg and Fe, and injected the ions into the lake water as the Mg and Fe sources for dolomite and ankerite. Hydrothermal fluids associated with peralkaline magmatic rocks also provided Ca, Mg, Fe, and CO. Explosive breccias formed and dolostones were convoluted near the vent of hydrothermal fluid exhalation, whereas laminated dolostones formed farther away from the vent. The dolostones are primary dolomite deposition in an intracontinental rift basin and associated with mantle-originated hydrothermal fluids. They provide an insight into the origin of dolomite formation in the geologic history and clues to understand the sedimentary environments and tectonic conditions in northern Xinjiang during the late Paleozoic. River basin management in China has focused on large rivers, such as the Yangtze and Yellow Rivers. However, there are also about 20,000 small river basins that deserve attention. The Biliu River basin in Liaoning Province, northeast China, which is 156 km in length, has many features common to small river basins, including divided jurisdiction among governments leading to vertical and horizontal fragmentation. In the Biliu basin, the key municipalities are Dalian with a population of almost 6 million people and Yingkou with about 2.28 million people. Each has different interests and needs, making coordination and collaboration difficult. The literature and practice suggest that effective integrated water resource management (IWRM) requires at least six features: (1) vision, policy and strategy; (2) a legislative or statutory basis to provide credibility and authority; (3) a river basin organization to coordinate development and management; (4) specification of functions and authority of the river basin organization; (5) public participation and community involvement; and (6) an IRWM strategy and plan. Water management in the Biliu River basin is assessed relative to these features of IWRM, with recommendations offered regarding changes to have water management in the Biliu River basin to reflect what is expected in an IWRM approach. This paper presents the results of a qualitative analysis of future flood risk in the Taihu Basin, China, performed using an adaptation of the UK Foresight Future Flooding approach. Drivers of increased flood risk were identified and ranked according to their importance in contributing to future flooding by experts and stakeholders working within an inclusive, participatory framework. Management responses to increasing flood risk were also identified and assessed in terms, first, of their potential to reduce flood risks and, second, their sustainability. This analysis provides the foundation for quantitative flood risk modelling to be performed in the next phase of the project. It has also added value to flood risk management in the Taihu Basin by bringing stakeholders together to develop a shared understanding of the flooding system and the relative importance of multiple flood risk drivers and responses. Together, the qualitative and quantitative analyses will provide a comprehensive vision of possible future flood risk to inform policy development and decision making. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
