Abstract

Paper umbrellas are one of the crafts included in the intangible cultural heritage of Malang, East Java. Currently, it is known that there is only one group of craftsmen who still produce this paper umbrella craft. Although not many of them, this paper umbrella craft still exists among people who like traditional handicrafts. This is evident from how often paper umbrella crafts appear at craft exhibitions in cities in Indonesia. Consequently, there is a pressing need for in-depth research on paper umbrella craftsmanship in Malang City. A valuable avenue for exploration is the examination of non-verbal communication aspects inherent in paper umbrella craftsmanship. This study aimed to determine the non-verbal communication aspects contained in paper umbrella crafts. The research employs a descriptive qualitative approach, focusing on analyzing non-verbal communication aspects. Data was collected using unstructured interview methods, documentation, and field surveys. The collected data was reduced for analysis using nonverbal communication theory. The study findings are presented descriptively, detailing the observed non-verbal communication aspects. The findings reveal three distinct categories of non-verbal communication aspects in paper umbrella craftsmanship: fixed features, semi-fixed features, and non-fixed features. Fixed features include shapes depicted on the umbrella. Semi fixed feature is a choice of material used to make paper umbrellas, colors, and motifs. The materials used are bamboo and paper. The colors of the umbrellas are red and green. The motif drawn on the umbrella is a floral motif. Flowers are present because they are the favorite shapes of the craftsmen who make umbrellas. In Lai Xá Village, Vietnam, studio photography is the village handicraft. Counter to Walter Benjamin's characterization of the click of a button, privileging eye over hand, but typical of many craft traditions, photographers there describe painstaking apprenticeships through which they learned to master the tools and materials of their craft. They learned to compensate for the shifting properties of light, climate, humidity, and irregular supplies of electricity, chemicals and printing paper, and adapted to changing regimes of technique and labor organization. As in many other craft traditions, apprentices often acquired their most valuable knowledge by stealth. We argue that studio photography belongs within contemporary discussions of craft as a handed, adaptive, engaged, small-scale social practice, and that craft awareness enables a richer ethnographic understanding of the work of studio photographers, both material and social. A walk in type semicylindrical solar tunnel dryer for drying 1500 handmade papers per batch has been commissioned at M/s Cellulosic Waste Recycling Education Project, Vidhya Bhawan Society, Udaipur, Rajasthan, India. A solar tunnel dryer with 122.95 m2 solar collector area was sufficient for drying handmade paper from 53.85% to 9.96% moisture content (dry basis) in 4–5 h. In this paper the results are shown in terms of the variation of air temperature, solar flux density, relative humidity, air flow rate, moisture content, etc., which indicate that the performance of solar tunnel dryer was quite satisfactory. The performance of the dryer for drying handmade papers has been analyzed through no load and full load test. Abstract

Mexican Bark Paper: Evidence of History of Tree Species Used and Their Fiber Characteristics. The use of bark fibers (secondary phloem) for the manufacture of the Mexican bark paper called amate can be traced back to the pre–Hispanic period. This paper was used extensively during this period, and for the last four decades has been produced as a handicraft by the Nahnus of San Pablito village in the Sierra Norte de Puebla region of Mexico. Due to the high demand for this product, new species are now used as a source of bark and specific phases of the traditional production technique have been modified. The focus of this study was to register all the species that have been used for bark paper manufacturing, both traditionally and more recently, and to analyze their fiber characteristics, mainly fiber length and lignin content. The main questions addressed by this study were: a) Which species have been used for bark paper production, both prior to and following its commercialization as a handicraft? b) Which anatomical and histochemical fiber characteristics of these species enable their use for bark paper production, regardless of taxa? And c) is there a relationship between the adoption and use of new species and recent changes in traditional paper making techniques? Based on an ethnobotanical study, a list of 13 species used for bark paper production was compiled and bark samples from each species were collected for phloem anatomical and histochemical analysis. Artisans and local healers were also asked to determine the main characteristics of each fiber and paper type. The results demonstrate that bark from currently used species differs anatomically and histochemically from species used during the pre–Hispanic period and until a few decades ago, and in terms of the quality assessed by local healers and artisans. Among other characteristics, the fibers of the new species have higher lignin content than the traditional ones, and this constitutes the main reason behind the modification of certain phases of the traditional paper making process.

Abstract

The part of Areca Palm (Areca catechu) that economical is the seed. It is commercially available in dried, cured and fresh forms, while the fibre is usually thrown away. Cellulose fibers from agricultural waste can be utilized as raw material for handicraft paper. Laboratory research showed that Areca palm fibre contained 70.2% of cellulose, 10.92% of water, and 6.02% of ash. This indicated that Areca palm fibre is very potential to be processed as handicraft paper. Handicraft paper is made of wastepaper or plants which cointain celluloce to produce rough-textured paper. In order to obtain preferred sensory quality of handicraft paper such as color, fiber appearance and texture as well as good physical quantity such as tensile strength, tear resistance and grammage, the addition of wastepaper to provide secondary fibre and sometimes adhesive are needed in making handicraft paper. Handicraft paper making was one alternative to treat the solid waste and to reduce the use of wood fiber as paper raw material. The aim of this study is to compare the two most famous method, i.e. Federer and Gomez Method, for calculate the number of replications. This study is preliminary research before do the research in order to get the best treatment to produce handicraft paper. The Gomez method calculates fewer replications than the Federer method. Based on data simulation the error generated using 3 replicates of 0.0876 while using 2 replicates of 0.1032.

Summary This article tests the role of social learning in the modernization of a rural nonfarm industry, using data from a paper-manufacturing village that was transformed from a traditional handicraft industry into a modern industrial cluster. Knowledge diffusion through kinship networks is shown to have played a significant role in the dissemination of mechanized production by helping the followers to overcome subjective risk during the initial investment stage. The financial support through kinship networks also had a demonstrably positive impact on the diffusion of the technology, which removed financial constraints on the initial fixed investments.

50. A Study of Paper Couture Based on Paper Modeling Techniques

Abstract

Paper, once known and used only as a medium for printing or handicrafts, is now being used in new fields including artistic clothing, and an environment-friendly material for fashion, while the functionality of its formative characteristics and esthetics have been newly highlighted. On this basis, this study performed a content analysis of paper couture and categorization of types of paper modeling techniques based on 904 paper couture submitted to paper fashion shows, exhibitions and contest exhibits from 2001 to 2013. Analysis results showed that paper textile types were most common at 86.64%, while techniques using laminating, bonding, overlapping or paper as-is represented 62.17%. Expressive techniques in which paper was cut or torn and attached to paper clothing was 11.62%, paper folding was 5.75%, drawing and coloring 4.65%, and finally, paper cutting was 2.65%. Meanwhile, among paper modeling techniques using paper yarn textiles, a paper weaving technique was 6.75%. Moreover, other techniques in which paper modeling techniques or subsidiary clothing was blended were 3.65%, and Dak peeling textiles were 1.33%. Paper paste moulding textiles types represented 1.44%, above all papier mâche techniques of 0.55% and creasing and holding techniques were 0.88%. Paper is sufficient to express the artists’ creativity as well as having qualities as an artistic medium, such as variability through combined use with other materials, variation in form, suitability for reuse of waste paper, and environmental friendliness. Also, various paper modeling techniques can be blended with textiles for a generalized technology that overcomes the limits of paper and textiles.
