India has a long history with textiles, and its handcrafted textiles and costumes are its greatest assets. The purpose of this study is to investigate potential uses for the Indian fabric Khadi and how they might be adapted for garments. Additionally, the government's targeted and advantageous policies, supported by design inputs, would boost the Khadi industry. Khadi product diversification has enormous promise since it can help the textile and apparel industry's "Make in India" and "Skill India" efforts succeed. The paper makes a contribution to the field of sustainable design for the benefit of society, the economy, and the environment. The purpose of the paper is to reposition Khadi as a fashion textile product that is both sustainable and compatible with contemporary Indian and global customer lifestyles. The global economy is expanding, and consumers now recognize their obligation to protect the environment and are prepared to take genuine steps to do so. Bidri handicraft in India, patronised by Bahamani kings, dates back to the fifteenth century and is nowadays under operational and socio-economic threats. The craft is made of zinc alloy, which poses scientific challenges in the areas of metallurgy, metal oxidation, and surface science. In the present paper, the art, owing to its scientific enigma, is under scrutiny, wherein the handicraft mandates the use of Bidar Fort (in Karnataka, India) clay, which bestows the handicraft its characteristic matt-black patina. The fort is a heritage conservation site and thus poses a threat to the perennial practice of handicraft. Therefore, it is imperative to document the patina and fort clay. Thus, morphological and chemical characterization of Bidri artefact surfaces was accomplished using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray Diffraction (XRD) analysis, X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS), and Energy Dispersive X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy (ED-XRF); besides, elemental characterization of Bidar fort clay was accomplished using SEM coupled with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS). This study is significant, as it is one of the initial works to scientifically document Bidri handicraft surface and clay, besides laying the foundation for future studies; a step to conserve the handicraft; and a step to prevent the deterioration of the Bidar fort monument. The winds of change are often blown by forces of nature like draught, famine, floods, earthquakes, and deadly pandemics which displace the craft communities from their native lands for livelihood. Despite this the handloom sector has suffered severe setbacks in the past decades and has struggled to cope with them. The paper aims to study the handloom craft design system of India, recognizing the strategies to strengthen and develop sustainable craft design system for handloom weavers. This exploratory paper is based on a review of the literature and observations. Case studies of the design interventions, craft study and chronology, at various handloom craft clusters are analyzed to understand the impact on the handloom craft design system, the transition from physical to digital retail that has penetrated the handloom weaving communities, government, and NGO organizations' support and nature of funding models involved. Craft design education and consumer awareness would increase sensitivity to changing markets scenarios. Communication about the textile process and authenticity is important to encourage the consumers to make mindful choices and support authentic handloom textiles which are integral to slow fashion. Pyatkar painting is one of cultural traditions of eastern India but it is on the verge of extermination. Amadubi village in Jharkhand known for its culture and dance is also known for its one unique practice of Pyatker painting. Pyatker artisans being poor, illiterate and rural background do not get adequate opportunities to access to the domestic/ international high-end markets. A craft village at Amadubi is possible only with the help and support of government and NGOs. The present paper attempts to understand the traditional aspect of Pyatker painting, to find out the reasons of extermination of Pyatker painting and to make suggestions for promotion of Pyatker painting. This paper also attempts to highlight the importance of craft village in the revival of Pyatker painting. This paper would be of great importance to the marketer of Indian handicrafts and also to the artisans who would be benefited through it. The data collected from the secondary sources. India is a country where millions of people still retain traditional skills and expertise for handicraft production. Indian handicrafts are a highly labour-intensive, cottage-based, and decentralised business. This industry provides the second-highest level of employment after agriculture, employing approximately six million craftspeople, including the whole population of the poorer portion of society, including women. This industry is equally critical to the economy, and it spans the country, from rural to metropolitan locations. The sector faces financial difficulties, including difficulty obtaining an adequate loan from financial agencies, accessing loans only at a high-interest rate, reliance on informal money lenders due to the inadequacy of formal financial institutions' loans, inability of businesses to expand due to high-interest rates, and a lack of knowledge regarding accounting procedures and maintaining a set of records. For a researcher, studying the dynamics of a traditional handcraft and indigenous knowledge becomes interesting during the research identification process, especially when a study turns into a comparative one between what actually s/he has personally witnessed in its applied area and its pre-existing insufficiently documented database. Sometimes, these documents are supportive but just bear few insufficient bullet points with some of those being contraindicating too. On the other hand, the existing status of a craft includes indigenous craft techniques, hereditary knowledge, work culture, materials, tools, line of end products, socio-cultural importance of craft, associated folklore roots and other ingredients, which represents an overall set of 'evidenced legacy' of any traditional heritage. The present documented status of flexible brass craft of Bellaguntha is also suffering from above mentioned situation. This paper covers some of the interesting cases found by this author, during his studies of pre-existing documents, concerned with this craft and presents the dynamics of product designing. The handicrafts industry is one of the industries that are rapidly growing. The demand for Indian handicraft arts, including metalware, woodware, hand-printed textiles and scarves, besides zari goods and imitation jewellery is increasing in America and many prominent European markets. The key issue with logistics is that it must deliver products to a customer at the time, method and cost to satisfy that particular customer's requirements. Udaipur's handicraft sector's ability to capture the benefits of the globalizing economy can be enhanced by an improvement in the logistics systems. There is presently a costly fragmentation of modes of transport - road, sea, rail, air. The results are three-fold: barriers to transport which have to change mode, economic inefficiency and high social and environmental cost. Efforts should be made in framing and implementing a policy which will help in moving away from isolated, individual modes towards a cohesive and unified framework for transport systems. The research paper is also an attempt to evaluate the role of logistic services in handicraft exports in Udaipur city. The results of this study show that Udaipur logistics market is not highly organized and reluctant. The results also indicate that the logistic services of Handicraft Emporiums are satisfactory and the handicraft sector has enormous opportunities to grow beyond the expectations if it utilizes logistic services effectively. Globalization -- which refers to the growing integration of societies, economies and cultures around the world, has become one of the most hotly-debated topics and key area of research among the policy makers, statesmen, corporate, politicians and academia respectively over the past few years. As India opens up her doors to the multinationals during the era of economic reform and liberalized market, putting an end to the 'license raj', it is not only the economies that often meet in the global market sphere, but also the people and cultures, which bring a new dimension to the multi-cultural setting. What we can see in present day modern world is that there is always a cross-cultural interaction between the 'local' and 'global' and the much discussed 'global village', is now not just a possibility but a reality despite many contradictions. Talking about Indian Handicrafts, which constitutes a significant segment of the decentralized sector of the economy, its export has reached at a commendable height. Indian folk art and crafts which are the integral parts of the Indian culture and tradition, are in high demand among the western consumers. Again, foreign fashion industry borrows a great deal from Indian appliquéd motifs Saree designs, an ethnic Indian wear. Needless to say, the borders between the world cultures are now eroding out and becoming irrelevant, therefore prompting to call it as a deterritorialized world. But notwithstanding, the real concern for many of us is that, can the 'local' really meet with the 'global' by truly sustaining its localness? The biggest problem in the Indian Handicraft industry is that the village craftsmen remain concerned that with free trade and mass production, hand-made products from other parts of the world will out price the products of their hard labour. So the basic question arises, is globalization a panacea for every human problems that the mother earth is facing now? With a brief theoretical understanding, this paper looks at globalization's increasing impact on Indian handicrafts and crafts persons. It tries to assess how far globalization serves as an opportunity and threat to the artisans. Through a case study of the artisanate in eighteenth-century Jodhpur, this paper explores the multiple identities among craft groups. It probes the matrix of factors that crystallised caste rather than class identities and solidarities, and enabled collective actions by craft castes in defence of their interests. It displays, however, that different contexts brought forth diverse forms of caste politics, and that behaving as unified blocs was as common as occasions that demonstrated fissures in caste identities. It therefore argues that multiple identities of individual craftsmen resulted in their perusal of heterogeneous competing agendas crosscutting caste and class affiliations. Purpose: A leader who inspires, facilitates and leads people to outperform themselves and bring phenomenal changes on an individual and social canvas is recognized as a transformational leader (TL). TL focuses on innovative methods and processes to improve the efficiency of subordinates. Experts believe that transformational leadership management is more effective than pragmatic leadership. This study focuses on the traits of a TL. Mr. Dhirendra Kumar, Managing Director of Jharcraft, who set out on a mission to lead people to revive the lost art and craft in the state of Jharkhand, India. The case highlights how Kumar's leadership style aligns with the four components of transformational leadership suggested by Bass (1985), i.e. idealized influence, intellectual stimulation, inspirational motivation and individual considerations. Design/methodology/approach: The study employs a qualitative approach to comprehend the theory of transformational leadership. First of all, an in-depth analysis of transformational leadership theory was conducted using secondary data. The findings of several researchers on the basis of their contribution to the development of transformational leadership theory were analyzed. Based on this, the Bass transformational theory framework was selected. Primary data were collected by conducting interviews with Mr. Dhirendra Kumar, Managing Director of Jharcraft. Findings: Transformational leadership is a leadership style that can inspire positive changes in those who follow. TLs are generally energetic, enthusiastic and passionate. As per Bass's transformational leadership components, Kumar challenged the status quo and imbibed creativity and skill into local artisans. Artisans were imparted training by experts from the National Institute of Fashion and Technology and provided intellectual stimulation. Kumar offered support and encouragement to individual followers. In order to foster supportive relationships, Kumar articulated a clear vision to the followers. Kumar served as a role model for followers. Because followers trust and respect the leader, they emulate this individual and internalize the individual's ideals. Research limitations/implications: This study only considered the traits portrayed by Dhirendra Kumar during Kumar's tenure as the Managing Director of Warcraft, and the data were collected at one single point in time. Future research may consider Kumar's entire service journey and study factors that influenced his role as a TL. Practical implications: Students will be able to learn and understand how a TL can bring positive change at the grassroots level. Social implications: This case focuses on how a TL's efforts led to the societal upliftment of poor people and made them capable. Originality/value: Given the importance of transformational leadership in today's organizational context, this study builds a knowledge base to understand factors for transformational leadership and traits exhibited by TLs. In the current scenario, the level of interest is increasing in female entrepreneurship in the handicraft sector worldwide. So the primary purpose of this study is to discover the different constructs that influence women entrepreneurs in India as learner students or after completion of their degree, either skill degree or professional degree. Female entrepreneurship is an important feature of economic progress, particularly in developing nations, since it provides opportunities for innovation, cultural and traditional connectivity, job creation, poverty reduction, socio-economic growth, etc. However, despite its significance, this study has garnered little attention in the entrepreneurship literature. For this research, we used Survey research and convenience sampling. For data analysis, AMOS 25 software was used; where needed, we used an Excel sheet for table formation. At the same time, traditional cultural constraints have tended to study Indian women's participation in handicraft entrepreneurship. It has been seen that most Indian female entrepreneurs are successful in their businesses. These females are engaged in banking, manufacturing, food and beverage, electronic, textile, and small industries. However, the Indian government is trying to motivate female entrepreneurs in the handicraft industry, but there is less number of women entrepreneurship in these sectors due to many factors. Just a handful has benefited through initiative, especially in the handicraft industry. Furthermore, only a few research articles have focused on the effect of essential elements. The research provides an Entrepreneurship Event Model, a Theory of Planned Behaviour, and an integrated model of the theory, which is evaluated using data from some Indian Institutions focused on entrepreneurship. Contribution: This study identifies the attributes of complexity that can be incorporated into engineering design problems at first-year undergraduate engineering projects. The findings are compiled as a set of guidelines to aid engineering educators in crafting design problems. Background: Engineering professionals solve complex problems like design problems, troubleshooting problems, system-analysis problems, and decision-making problems. To develop proficiency in solving such problems, accreditation bodies for engineering education mandate the development of knowledge and skills for solving complex problems. The literature presents several attributes of complexity, but it does not clearly state which of these attributes are relevant for first-year engineering problem-solving and incorporate them into the engineering curriculum. Research Question: This study qualitatively investigates the research question, “How to craft engineering design problems with known attributes of complexity for first-year undergraduate engineering education?” Methodology: The study is situated in a project-based learning course offered at first-year engineering at a university in India. It identifies the attributes of complexity in interdisciplinary (mechatronic) design projects (prototypes) through thematic analysis of faculty interviews. Further, this was validated by analyzing the prototypes. Findings: Several themes of complexity emerged; this article presents only two themes: 1) knowledge and 2) skills related to solving the engineering design problem and the types of relationships between the prototype’s functions. The article discusses the legal protection of the geographical indication of Kashmiri handicrafts in the State of Jammu and Kashmir, India. The 1999 Geographical Indications of Goods Act protects GI as an intellectual property right issue. However, the authors point that there are provisions of the act which could affect registration of geographical indications. Also, the act lacks provisions to protect the traditional knowledge relating to handicraft making.

West Bengal is bestowed with several praiseworthy traditional crafts. Conch shell craft is one of the primordial crafts of the state. The artisans are called the Sankharis. Before the advent of machine tools they had their own indigenous technology. With hand operated simple tools they used to engrave exotic designs on the shell bangles and on the intact chunk. It was very laborious and time consuming job but it used to fulfill the psychological satisfaction of the artisans and aspiration of innovation of artistic aptitude. The advent of machine industry and electrically operated machine tools have increased the mass production rate that has encouraged new entrepreneurshlp restraining the originality of the traditional craft leading to the unemployment to the rural traditional craftsmen. Beside. imitation Sankha, made of cheap plastic, porcelain and other chemical materials has lead a competition in the market. This commercialization of the craft has created a great impact on the structural and functional aspect of the craft. Two distinct categories have emerged out i.e. a Mahajan class and a Karigar class. Naturally the profits go in favour of mahajans or traders. It leads to no other avenues for the poor craftsmen to switch over to the other occupation. For this they are suffering from the identity crisis and also loosing their status as Shilpi to Karigar. The article presents an overview of the doctoral thesis "Gendered Spaces: Craftswomen's Stories of Self-Employment in Orissa, India," by Jyotirmayee Acharya. Jyotirmayee Acharya's study of the intertwining of gender, craftwork and space in women's self-employment' in the Indian state of Orissa focuses on rural women handicraft and handloom producers, and is intended as an alternative to the non-feminist discourses and texts on exploitation that obscure many dimensions of women's lives and the distinctive nature of subaltern capabilities. She examines the situation of unorganized female home workers and self-employees and their capability for autonomous livelihoods. Capability is defined in terms of dignity, humanity and autonomy.

The Geographical Indications of India Act requires a detailed description of 'authorized users' and 'producers' without concern for how these 'producers'/ 'authorized users' are identified and what are the outcomes of such identification. Artisans identified as producers of GI registered 'Cheriyal Painting' of Telangana primarily belong to one genetically related family. Apart from members of the Danalakota household, GI also enumerates families of apprentices as 'producers'. This article will highlight two things. First, it will demonstrate the way in which identification of 'producers'/ 'authorized users' replicates not only the relational worlds within which producers exist but also the 'obligations and moral imperatives' embedded within those relations. Second, identifying oneself as a 'producer'/ 'authorized user' requires distinguishing and individualizing one's relatedness with the Danalakota family; promises of welfare by the state then become accessible only by becoming kin and distinguishing oneself as kin. The paper attempts to explain how green training, an important human resource function, influences green creativity in the handicraft organisations. The mediating role of green dynamic capabilities and the moderating role of resource commitment are also examined. A survey of 211 handicraft managers is conducted to test the proposed hypotheses, followed by a qualitative approach in which cases of two handicraft organisations are examined. The findings of the study indicate that green training influences the organisations green creativity both directly and indirectly and that green dynamic capabilities further influence the green creativity indirectly via the moderating role of resource commitment to producing superior creative outcomes. The study is the first to assess green creativity as an outcome of green training. An ergonomic assessment of static muscular strength like hand grip-and pinch strength in handicraft occupation was made. In total, 170 female participants were selected for the case-control study, out of which 120 handicraft and 50 office workers were examined as exposed and control groups. Their maximum static handgrip- and pinch strength were measured using hand and pinch dynamometers. We analyze our findings to indicate static muscular strength varies significantly due to repetitive use of hand tools. The decrement in pinch grip strength was evident due to long cycle repetitive pinching movements of distal phalanx during hand knotting and pearl drilling. Based on our results we propose the need for ergonomically designed hand tool interventions that may reduce the accumulation of loss in static muscle strength. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article reports on Geographical indications as a type of intellectual property rights for handicrafts in India. GI provides legal protection for handicrafts with commercial potential. It is noted that the illegitimate use of geographical names may damage the reputation of a product and cause original rights holders to lose return on investments.

The craftsmanship of the arts and crafts embodies a tradition, which lives in the creative imagination of the artists of Orissa. The beauty and charm of its crafts has always been a source of attraction to many Indian and foreign tourists. Today Orissa handicrafts are thus reaching all corners of the world. A clear understanding of consumer behavior can give marketers a better idea of how marketing works, enabling them to devise more potent marketing strategies. Usually outdated designs do not attract buyers. In keeping with the changes in consumer tastes and preferences, artisans have to change their crafts. With change in the outlook of the present customers, artists have to work accordingly, which can fulfill the requirements of the customers. The article examines protection of collective rights and individual innovations in traditional handicrafts, focusing on their significance to the cultural heritage of traditional groups native to India. It also discusses inadequacies of the Indian intellectual property laws, particularly the Geographical Indications of Goods Act 1999, the Designs Act 2000 and the Copyright Act 1957 in safeguarding traditional handicrafts and rewarding individual creativity.

The article presents a case study which examines the tribal settlement of the village of Chowkapathara in Bengal, India. It notes that the village consists of rice farmers and producers of baskets and other handicrafts made of bamboo. It explains that the entire settlement is divided into two distinct clusters placed on either side of the state highway, along a narrow earthen road. It says that the inhabitants still follow traditional building practices.
