Paleotempestology, the study of past tropical cyclone activity, has grown considerably over the past two decades, and there is now a relatively dense network of sites across the Western North Atlantic Basin providing records of past tropical cyclone variability. This paper presents a new database of paleotempestological records generated from 61 studies published between 1993 and 2018 for this region. A total of 266 data entries, consisting of the calibrated ages of individual tropical cyclone events and the boundaries of ‘active’ tropical cyclone periods from the present to 8000 cal. yr BP, along with the site names, geographic coordinates, proxy indicator(s) used, materials upon which dating was undertaken, and information about the depositional basin type (e.g. lagoon, mangrove), are included in the database for each site. The database is housed at the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Association (NOAA) (https://www.ncdc.noaa.gov/paleo/study/21391) and is available for free download. This publicly available database will permit a greater number of researchers to work on questions related to past tropical cyclone dynamics and more easily allow studies of long-term spatial-temporal tropical cyclone relationships to be undertaken. This paper reviews the reconstruction of European Atlantic storm events with the contribution of a new stormy reconstruction in its central part. Three marsh environments on the island of Yeu were chosen to identify disturbing storm events from the Mid- to Late Holocene with vibracore sampling, radiocarbon dating and sedimentary analysis. Nine probable intervals of high energy deposition in these low-transport-activity environments are estimated: 600–500, near 1590, 2100–1950, 2850–2350, 3500–3270, 5400–5370, 6650–6510, near 7000 and between 7670 and 7470 calibrated years before present (cal y BP). By comparison with sedimentological paleostorm studies, we confirm six European Atlantic storm events estimated at near 600–300, 1700–1100, 2900–2500, 3500–3300, 5500–5100 and 7700–7100 cal y BP, corresponding to worldwide Holocene cooling climatic periods. A comparison with other storminess reviews of worldwide main stormy coasts shows that Holocene storms can increase during global cooling periods in the northern hemisphere. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Magdalen Islands (Québec, Canada) in the centre of the Gulf of St. Lawrence are located in a strategic position for providing an overview of the relative sea-level (RSL) history of the Maritime Provinces of eastern Canada. Although data are available for the coastal terrestrial areas of the Maritimes, data from the Gulf are very scarce and both the RSL and glacio-isostatic adjustment (GIA) models extrapolate for this central region. This study provides new stratigraphic and chronological data from four outcrops and two coring sites on the Magdalen Islands. In addition to the five samples used mainly for age control purposes, nine new luminescence ages are presented. With these new data added to the available literature, a new RSL curve is reconstructed for the LGM to the late Holocene period and a partial curve is proposed for the interval between the late MIS 4 to the MIS 3. Data also indicate a few insights for the MIS 5 period. Results reveal that for the LGM to the late Holocene, the curve corresponds to the J-shaped curve scenario recognized in the literature. The RSL changes during this period are the result of glacio-isostatic rebound, migration and collapse of the peripheral forebulge, and eustatic sea-level changes. For the LGM to the early Holocene, glacio-isostatic depression curves displaying a few local differences are also proposed. For the late Holocene, the data constrain the curve between two types of indicators, i.e. marine and terrestrial, and indicate that the RSL has risen at least 3 m during the last two millennia. Sediments dated to the MIS 5 and the interval between the late MIS 4 and the MIS 3 illustrate that the GIA following the LGM also occurred for the MIS 5 interglacial and the MIS 3 interstadial. This paper presents an integrated approach to assess Holocene environmental changes in the Sperchios delta, Sperchios rift, central Greece. A multidisciplinary study was carried out applying established analytical methods as well as exploring new techniques to detect past environmental conditions in a fluvio-deltaic depositional system. A series of six deep boreholes, up to 50 m long, and four shallow cores, up to 6 m long, from across the delta plain, were studied in detail. Sedimentary facies were defined by changes in grain size and macro- and microfaunal composition. Variability in mineral magnetic composition documented by changes in bulk magnetic susceptibility (χ and χ77K/χ293K) and remanence parameters (S−300 and σARM/σSIRM ratios), as well as down-core elemental variations obtained by scanning micro-x-ray fluorescence (µ-XRF), provide constraints on the depositional changes related to the evolution of the Sperchios delta. Correlations between elemental data derived by µ-XRF analyses and grain size were also analyzed and used to further constrain the facies interpretation. Overall, these Holocene sediments reveal a transgressive–regressive succession overlying pre-transgressive terrestrial deposits of Late Pleistocene–Early Holocene age. Furthermore, 13 new 14C radiocarbon dates constrain the transgression rate to be ~3.5 m/yr for the Early Holocene and the regression rate to be ~1 m/yr for the Late Holocene. The Sperchios delta plain developed when the rate of sea-level rise decreased ~6000 cal. yr BP as it has been proposed for the broader area of Aegean Sea. This study demonstrates that the combination of techniques used here provides a powerful way to map out paleoenvironmental changes and thus the 3D stratigraphic architecture of Holocene sedimentary successions. A major achievement in research supported by the Kluane Lake Research Station was the recovery, in 2001 - 02, of a suite of cores from the icefields of the central St. Elias Mountains, Yukon, by teams of researchers from Canada, the United States, and Japan. This project led to the development of parallel, long (103-104 year) ice-core records of climate and atmospheric change over an altitudinal range of more than 2 km, from the Eclipse Icefield (3017 m) to the ice-covered plateau of Mt. Logan (5340 m). These efforts built on earlier work recovering single ice cores in this region. Comparison of these records has allowed for variations in climate and atmospheric composition to be linked with changes in the vertical structure and dynamics of the North Pacific atmosphere, providing a unique perspective on these changes over the Holocene. Owing to their privileged location, cores from the St. Elias Icefields also contain a remarkably detailed record of aerosols from various sources around or across the North Pacific. In this paper we review major scientific findings from the study of St. Elias Mountain ice cores, focusing on five main themes: (1) The record of stable water isotopes (δ18O, δD), which has unique characteristics that differ from those of Greenland, other Arctic ice cores, and even among sites in the St. Elias; (2) the snow accumulation history; (3) the record of pollen, biomass burning aerosol, and desert dust deposition; (4) the record of long-range air pollutant deposition (sulphate and lead); and (5) the record of paleo-volcanism. Bleicher (2013) discussed interpretations proposed by Magny (2004) that Holocene lake-level fluctuations in west-central Europe suggest possible solar forcing of climate. He pointed out that the method used by Magny (2004) is a variant of a cumulative probability function (CPF) and cannot prove solar forcing of central European lake-level changes. He concluded that only few episodes of lake-level changes are climatically driven and that non-climatic factors were dominating. While Bleicher’s paper offers a stimulating contribution to the general debate on CPFs, the present comment is based on an approach which, in contrast to CPFs, excludes any consideration of variations in the probabilities over the time intervals given by calibration of 14C dates, as well as any distinction between types of dates (radiocarbon versus tree ring). It produces a revised pattern of the mid-European high lake-level events for the whole Holocene, supporting the hypothesis proposed in Magny (2004). Comparisons with other regional and North Atlantic palaeoclimatic records suggest that, without excluding other forcing factors, the successive high lake-level events recognised in west-central Europe reflect a combination of three main forcing factors acting on millennial and centennial scales, i.e. orbitally driven changes in insolation, impacts of deglacial outbursts and, possibly, variations in solar activity. Finally, it is clear that further investigations are still needed in order to improve the chronological data set for mid-European lake-level fluctuations, with particular attention to better defining the beginning and end of events. Abstract: West Greenland has been intensively studied to reconstruct and better understand past relative sea level changes and deglacial history. This study extends these efforts by linking sea level and deglacial history to the sedimentary infill successions of Kangerlussuaq Fjord and associated landward valleys. Based on published and new land- and sea-based geophysical data, radiocarbon dates and geological observations we have characterized the infill and reconstructed the sedimentation history during the Holocene. Based on a revised sea level curve and data presented in this paper we defined three depositional phases. Phase I (>7000 yr BP) is represented by dominant glaciomarine deposition associated with a tide-water glacier system. As the Greenland Ice Sheet (GIS) continued to retreat it became land based. During phase II (7000–1500 yr BP) two separate depocenters formed. Keglen delta depocenter arose from a temporary stabilization phase of the GIS and prograded rapidly over the glaciomarine deposits of Phase I. Further inland, proglacial lake formation and subsequent sedimentary infill associated with the ongoing GIS retreat is represents the second depocenter. The Watson River connected both depocenters by a flood plain which transferred sediment from the GIS to the Keglen delta. Ongoing sea level fall due to glacio-isostastic uplift combined with a gradually cooler and dryer climate resulted in terrace formation along the Watson River flood plain. Around 4000 yr BP, the GIS margin reached its most landward location and began to advance to its present location. The final phase (Phase III; <1500 yr BP) is represented by a stabilized GIS position and a relative sea level rise which led to aggrading conditions near the present-day delta plain of Watson River. Basin water in deep-silled Norwegian fjords is primarily influenced by inflowing Atlantic water originating from the Norwegian Atlantic Current (NwAC). Previous studies suggest that benthic foraminiferal oxygen isotope records from such fjords are strongly influenced by variability in this current. The present paper presents a mid- to late-Holocene record (6–2.2 ka) with 17-yr time resolution from a western Norwegian deep-silled fjord, Voldafjorden. An age model, based on ten AMS radiocarbon dates on marine carbonates and on one plant macrofossil, has been established. The study focuses on the oxygen isotope results, obtained from two species of benthic foraminifera: Cassidulina laevigata and Uvigerina mediterranea. The δ18O C. laevigata record has systematically larger amplitudes than the δ18O U. mediterranea record, which most likely is related to different life cycles/periods of calcification. The oxygen isotope results show a clear shift towards higher values between 5 and 4 ka, interpreted to reflect a temperature drop in the basin water of c. 1°C. After the temperature drop, the high frequency variability (centennial and multidecadal) changes abruptly towards larger amplitudes. This corresponds to changes in subperiodicity, where a 370 year cycle in the δ18O C. laevigata record disappears after 3.8 ka. The δ18O transition corresponds to changes in carbon isotopes and grain size distribution, suggesting that a more extensive change in the fjord environment occurred after the cooling. The timing of the oxygen isotope shift towards higher values and the transition in high frequency variability correspond to major changes recorded in paleoclimate archives within the North Atlantic region and globally. Glacial geologic studies in the Southern Hemisphere (SH) mid-latitudes (40-54°S) indicate renewed glacial activity in southern South America (Patagonia) and New Zealand's (NZ) South Island starting at ∼7 kyr, the so-called neoglaciation. Available data indicate that neoglacial advances in these regions occurred during a rising trend in atmospheric CO and CH concentrations, lower-than-present but increasing summer insolation and seasonality contrasts. In this paper we examine the climatological context in which neoglaciations occurred through analysis of the complete Paleoclimate Modelling Inter-comparison Project (PMIP2) database of simulations at 6 kyr for the SH. We observe that the amplitude of the annual insolation cycle in the SH did not change significantly at 6 kyr compared to the pre-industrial values, the largest difference occurring in autumn (MAM, negative anomalies) and spring (SON, positive anomalies). The simulated changes in temperatures over the SH respond to the insolation changes, with a 1-2 month delay over the oceans. This results in a reduced amplitude of the annual cycle of temperature and precipitation over most continental regions, except over Patagonia and NZ, that show a slight increase. In contrast, large-scale circulation features, such as the low and upper level winds and the subtropical anticyclones show an amplified annual cycle, as a direct response to the increased/decreased insolation during the transitional seasons SON/MAM. In the annual mean, there is a small but consistent equatorward shift of the latitude of maximum wind speed of 1-3° over the entire SH, which results in a small increase of wind speed over the South Pacific and Atlantic Oceans north of ∼50°S and a widespread decline south of 50°S. PMIP2 simulations for 6 kyr, indicate that in the annual mean, the SH mid-latitudes were colder, wetter and with stronger winds north of about 50°S. These conditions are consistent with the observed neoglacial advances in the region, as well as with terrestrial paleoclimate records from Patagonia that indicate cooling and a multi-millennial rising trend in Southern Westerly Wind intensity starting at ∼7.8 kyr. Abstract: Tropical peatlands of SE-Asia represent a significant terrestrial carbon reservoir of an estimated 65 Gt C. In this paper we present a comprehensive data synthesis of radiocarbon dated peat profiles and 31 basal dates of ombrogenous peat domes from the lowlands of Peninsular Malaysia, Sumatra and Borneo and integrate our peatland data with records of past sea-level and climate change in the region. Based on their developmental features three peat dome regions were distinguished: inland Central Kalimantan (Borneo), Kutai basin (Borneo) and coastal areas across the entire region. With the onset of the Holocene the first peat domes developed in Central Kalimantan as a response to rapid post-glacial sea-level rise over the Sunda Shelf and intensification of the Asian monsoon. Peat accumulation rates in Central Kalimantan strongly declined after 8500 cal BP in close relation to the lowering rate of the sea-level rise and possibly influenced by the regional impact of the 8.2 ka event. Peat growth in Central Kalimantan apparently ceased during the Late Holocene in association with amplified El Niño activity as exemplified by several truncated peat profiles. Peat domes from the Kutai basin are all younger than ∼8300 cal BP. Peat formation and rates of peat accumulation were driven by accretion rates of the Mahakam River and seemingly independent of climate. Most coastal peat domes, the largest expanse of SE-Asian peatlands, initiated between 7000 and 4000 cal BP as a consequence of a Holocene maximum in regional rainfall and the stabilisation and subsequent regression of the sea-level. These boundary conditions induced the highest rates of peat accumulation of coastal peat domes. The Late Holocene sea-level regression led to extensive new land availability that allowed for continued coastal peat dome formation until the present. The time weighted mean Holocene peat accumulation rate is 0.54 mm yr−1 for Central Kalimantan, 1.89 mm yr−1 for Kutai and 1.77 mm yr−1 for coastal domes of Sumatra and Borneo. The mean Holocene carbon sequestration rates amount to 31.3 g C m−2 yr−1 for Central Kalimantan and 77.0 g C m−2 yr−1 for coastal sites, which makes coastal peat domes of south-east Asia the spatially most efficient terrestrial ecosystem in terms of long term carbon sequestration. The Shiyang River drainage basin is located in the northwest margin of the Asian monsoon region. Previous studies reached different conclusions about Holocene climatic changes in the basin. Some studies suggested the Holocene climatic changes were mainly controlled by the Asian monsoon and that the climate was relatively humid during the early Holocene (11.6--7.1 cal ka BP). Other studies found the mid-Holocene Climatic Optimum (7.0--5.0 cal ka BP), and this climate condition was similar to the Holocene westerly wind pattern in arid Central Asia. The modern climate is affected by the Asian monsoon and westerly wind in the drainage basin, and the Holocene climatic records showed two different Holocene climatic patterns--a westerly wind pattern and monsoonal pattern. However, it remains unclear what caused the two different Holocene climatic patterns to co-exist in the region. The palynological records are the main evidence for the Holocene climatic changes in the basin. This paper focuses on palynological records for different parts of the drainage basin. Among them, QTH02, QTL-03 and Sanjiaocheng records are located in the terminal lake, and the Hongshuihe record is located in the middle reaches of the basin. In the terminal lake, the palynological records of QTH02 and QTL-03 are similar, but the Sanjiaocheng record differs. The difference is mainly affected by the variable pollen assemblages in the different locations of the lake basin. From comparison and synthesis of the four palynological records, we concluded that the millennial-scale Holocene climatic changes were affected by the combined effects of the Asian monsoon and westerly wind in the drainage basin, which show the complicated Holocene climatic pattern in the northwest margin of the Asian monsoon. This paper provides a synthesis of available palynological data from central Mediterranean lacustrine records, studying the causes of the important vegetation changes which occurred in the mid Holocene. They are illustrated by seven well-dated records, lakes Accesa, Mezzano, Vico, and Pergusa in Italy, Maliq, Voulkaria and Malo J. in the Balkans. A good tool for disentangling climate change and human impact is the combined interpretation of pollen percentage and concentration/influx data. Pollen concentration/influx drops are an indication of increased erosion in the catchment, mainly ascribable to forest reduction. There is no doubt that major synchronous changes could not have been caused by humans alone. Many southern European records show substantial differences between early- and late-Holocene vegetation, suggesting a general evolution from wetter to drier climatic conditions, in agreement with arid phases recognised by other, independent palaeoclimatic methods. Other pollen records show a different trend. The role of changing seasonality seems important for this region of the Mediterranean. Precipitation seasonality increased during the early to mid Holocene with winter precipitation attaining a maximum, and summer precipitation a minimum. At least three rapid climate events with changes in plant biomass are in evidence: an abrupt and short change around 8200 yr BP, another one centred around 6000 yr BP, and one soon after 3000 yr BP. From the beginning of the Bronze Age (c. 4400 yr BP in this region) human impact overlapped with a climate change, probably bipartite, towards dryness. Abstract: Caves have yielded some of the most globally important archaeological sequences, but often their interpretation has suffered from assumptions about cave sedimentary processes. Caves contain distinctive sedimentary environments: this has major implications for the understanding of contained archaeological materials. This paper describes and analyses the Holocene sediments in the Haua Fteah, a sequence regarded as essentially continuous by the original excavator. 50 years after it was first excavated, the Haua''s Epipalaeolithic to post-Classical chronological range and rich finds make it still the key Holocene archaeological site in North Africa. The reassessment shows, however, that the sequence is strongly discontinuous and this has major implications for the reinterpretation of the site, as the highly-resolved archaeological record is thus likely to reflect a series of brief occupations, rather than continuous human activity. As with many caves, the sedimentary record in the Haua Fteah is an extremely sensitive indicator of environments and processes in the wider landscape. Secure understanding of sedimentary process, from analysis of the highly individual records found in caves, is essential for full understanding of their contained archaeology. Abstract: The reconstruction of paleoenvironmental changes from diatoms in lake sediments is based on the usual assumption that, in each studied sample, the dominant species reflect the environment that prevailed during the time of deposition. If the environment changed significantly during the period of deposition (several years) one can expect a mixture of species having different or contradictory ecological affinities. In this paper we present analyses of diatoms in surface sediment samples collected in the Lake Ossa area (3°50′N, 9°36E) and fossil diatoms from a mid-late Holocene core retrieved in the deepest part of the lake. The Lake Ossa area alternates between a short dry season centered at around the northern winter and a long rainy season during the rest of the year entailing significant changes in water level and pH. Based on multivariate analyses, we will show here that mean annual water depth is the most significant variable explaining the distribution of diatoms in the entire Lake. However, seasonal changes of water level are poorly recorded by diatom assemblages, except in some flat areas on the borders of the lakes where a mixing between species with different affinities to water depth is likely due to seasonal changes in water level. Inferred water depth based on a quantitative transfer function reflected essentially secular to millennial changes in the studied core. The relationship between pH and diatoms is not statistically significant but seasonal to multi-annual pH variations mainly observed in the central parts of the lake are reflected by a mixing of acidophilous and alkaliphilous species. Hierarchical ascending cluster analysis (HAC) considered as the most efficient mean of describing diatom mixing shows that seasonal to multi-annual changes in pH are recorded both in the modern and fossil assemblages. According to the degree of mixing between diatoms with different pH affinities we conclude that short-term pH variability was weaker than today between 5200 and 2700calyrBP, stronger between 2700 and 2000calyrBP, weaker again between 2000 and 600calyrBP and similar to present from 400calyrBP onwards. Short-term changes were thus superimposed on secular to millennium trends recorded by modifications in the abundance of alkaliphilous diatoms. All these changes are interpreted as variations in precipitation according to a previous model showing that pH is strongly controlled by acidic meteoric water. Inferred water depth slightly changed over the last 5500years showing weak variations of precipitation minus evaporation balance at secular to millennial time scales. These results will be used to refine previously published paleoclimatic interpretations, which explained changes in precipitation and P–E balance by modifications in the vertical structure of the atmosphere and subsequently by changes in cloud cover, convective or stratiform. This paper presents and discusses the use of soil charcoal analysis (pedoanthracology) to reconstruct past forest dynamics in a larch forest of the upper Guil valley (French Alps, Queyras). We also discuss the role of anthropogenic fire in forest dynamics. The radiocarbon dates from this site demonstrate that arolla pine (Pinus cembra) and larch were present in the area since 7566-7673 cal. BP and 5934-6123 cal. BP, respectively. The identification of a piece of charcoal to fir (Abies alba) dated to 5734-5908 cal. BP suggests that this species was present at 1980 m a.s.l. since c. 6000 cal. BP and had a higher ecological tolerance than previously assumed. The cover of larch forests has increased since the second half of the Holocene because of anthropogenic practices (eg, clearing with fire, cattle grazing). However, today, owing to the abandonment of pastoral practices, the arolla pine has become dominant, which greatly modifies the forest structure and the landscape. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: The role of ocean feedback on monsoon variations at 6 and 9.5kyr Before Present (BP) compared to present-day is investigated by using sets of simulations computed with the IPSL–CM4 ocean–atmosphere coupled model and simulations with the atmospheric model only with the SST prescribed to the present-day simulation for the coupled model. This work is complementary to the study by Marzin and Braconnot (2009) who have analyzed in detail the response of Indian and African monsoons to changes in insolation at 6 and 9.5kyr BP using the IPSL–CM4 coupled model. The monsoon rainfall was intensified at 6 and 9.5kyr BP compared to 0kyr BP as a result of the intensified seasonal cycle of insolation in the Northern Hemisphere. In this paper, the impact of the ocean feedback is analysed for the Indian, East-Asian and African monsoons. The response of the ocean to the 6 and 9.5kyr BP insolation forcing shares similarities between the two periods, but we highlight local differences and a delay in the response of the surface ocean between 6 and 9.5kyr BP. The ocean feedback is shown to be positive for the early stage of the African monsoon. A dipole of SST in the tropical Atlantic favouring the earlier build-up of the monsoon in the 6 and 9.5kyr BP coupled simulations. However, it is strongly negative for the Indian and East Asian monsoons, and of stronger amplitude at 9.5 than at 6kyr BP over India. In these Asian regions, the convection is more active over the ocean than over the continent during the late monsoon season due to the ocean feedback. The results are consistent with previous studies about 6kyr BP climate. In addition, it is shown that the ocean feedback is not sufficient to explain the relative amplifications of the different monsoon systems within the three periods of the Holocene, but that the mechanisms such as the effect of the precession on the seasonal cycle of monsoons as discussed in Marzin and Braconnot (2009) are more plausible. In this paper we illustrate how different internal and external forcings conditioned postglacial vegetation in southern Mediterranean areas. By comparing seven Holocene sequences, we emphasize the role of glacial refugia as postglacial vegetation dispersal centers. We also identify the importance of the system's inertia in the time lags observed for vegetation response to climate change and human pressure. Finally, we explore the cascade of effects triggered by the human-climate interface, specifically the vegetation and the environmental feedbacks implicated in the collapse of the Argaric culture that emerged in arid southeastern Spain about 4,000 years before the present. A series of marked environmental changes took place during the transition from Pleistocene to Holocene, to which the hunter-gatherers adapted by modifying their technology and subsistence practices. In parallel with these changes, territoriality increased and significant transformations in artistic expression occurred. This paper assesses the archaeological record of the Iberian Mediterranean watershed to analyze various aspects. of this adaptive process, which unfolded gradually from the end of the Magdalenian to the beginning of the Neolithic. Abstract: Possible effects of seismic activity in the Dead Sea basin on the regional vegetation distribution are presented in this paper. The palynology was investigated in high resolution at the Holocene outcrop near the Ein Feshkha oasis. Pollen samples were collected from three intervals (A, B, D), with thicknesses of 5–15 cm, containing 1–2 seismites each, and from one undisturbed layer (interval C). All four intervals are from the same Ein Feshkha outcrop section, but from different depths. In two of the intervals (B, C) the main pollen indicators (e.g. Olea, Pinus, Asteroideae, Cichorioideae) show no significant aberrations from the typical pollen fluctuations. Interval A, deposited during the late Byzantine period, shows a decline of Olea percentages immediately after the sedimentation of a breccia layer (interpreted as a seismite). While this decrease in olive percentages predominantly reflects an aridification crisis at the end of the Byzantine period, damage to olive orchards due to earthquake (root damages, collapses of the crowns) and/or the abandonment of cultivated land as a consequence of an earthquake cannot be ruled out. Nevertheless, minor anthropogenic indicators like Vitis or Juglans, which show low abundances in the pollen diagram of Ein Feshkha, as well as other trees and herbs, are not affected by the late Byzantine earthquake. Interval D, deposited during the Hellenistic–Roman period, shows a slight decrease of Olea and an increase of Cichorioideae after the deposition of a seismite. Our hypothesis that earthquakes might have affected vegetation dynamics in intervals A and D is supported by cluster analysis. While the data of this study do not support the use of pollen as a reliable paleoseismic tool in the lacustrine environment of the Dead Sea, some small effects of earthquakes on pollen fluctuations cannot be excluded. Abstract: Studies on the climate of humid period and the impacts of changing precession in the early-mid Holocene are reviewed in this paper. High-resolution proxy data indicated that the African Humid Period, strong summer monsoon from the Arabian Sea to South Asia, northward migration of ITCZ (Intertropical Convergence Zone) over the northern South America, and the humid period of China appeared in 10.5–5.5kaBP, 10.0–6.0kaBP, 10.5–5.4kaBP, and 11.0–8.0kaBP, respectively. Modeling studies proved that summer insolation over the Northern Hemisphere increased following the changes of precession in the early Holocene, which increased the land–sea temperature contrasts, intensified the summer monsoon circulation in the Northern Hemisphere, and finally induced a humid climate over the area under the influence of summer monsoon. However, modeling results underestimated the increase of precipitation and the degree of northward extension of monsoon rain belt compared with palaeo-environmental data. These discrepancies between the modeling results and the palaeo-environmental data may be associated with the changes of North Atlantic circulation, sea ice and vegetation covers. Moreover, climate of the humid period was not stable, in which several droughts were inlaid on centennial scale. In this review, perspectives for further studies of the climate change of the humid period in the early-mid Holocene are also proposed. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Aim The assumedly anomalous occurrence of savannas and forest–savanna mosaics in the Gran Sabana – a neotropical region under a climate more suitable for tropical rain forests – has been attributed to a variety of historical, climatic, and anthropogenic factors. This paper describes a previously undocumented shift in vegetation and climate that occurred during the early Holocene, and evaluates its significance for the understanding of the origin of the Gran Sabana vegetation. Location A treeless savanna locality of the Gran Sabana (4°30′–6°45′ N and 60°34′–62°50′ W), in the Venezuelan Guayana of northern South America, at the headwaters of the Caroní river, one of the major tributaries of the Orinoco river. Methods Pollen and charcoal analysis of a previously dated peat section spanning from about the Pleistocene/Holocene boundary until the present. Results Mesothermic cloud forests dominated by Catostemma (Bombacaceae) occupied the site around the Pleistocene/Holocene boundary. During the early Holocene, a progressive but relatively rapid trend towards savanna vegetation occurred, and eventually the former cloud forests were replaced by a treeless savanna. Some time after the establishment of savannas, a marked increase in charcoal particles indicates the occurrence of the first local fires. Main conclusions The occurrence of cloud forests at the Pleistocene/Holocene boundary contradicts the historical hypothesis according to which the Gran Sabana is a relict of the hypothetical widespread savannas that have been assumed to have dominated the region during the last glaciation. The first local fires recorded in the Holocene were on savanna vegetation, which is against the hypothesis of fire as the triggering factor for the establishment of these savannas. River basins in Great Britain and Ireland have been characterized by periods of hillslope and valley floor instability during the Holocene, reflecting sensitivity to both climate change and anthropogenic disturbance. In contrast to climatic controls, which have been relatively well documented, human impacts on and interactions with river basins remain unclear. There is now, however, a growing impetus to elucidate more fully the impact of anthropogenic activity on sediment supply and runoff, given that land-use change is thought to have exacerbated recent flooding in the UK (eg, the 'Millennium' floods of 2000). The aim of this paper is to critically review the significance of Holocene land use on hillslope and valley floor stability in Great Britain and Ireland. The most widely reported impacts of land-use change on geomorphic activity include hillslope erosion and gully development, valley floor alluviation, river channel incision and elevated water tables. In the majority of cases, however, causal relationships are difficult to establish, due primarily to inadequate dating control. Even where geomorphic instability can be linked to land-use change, it is apparent that eroded material is often stored as colluvium, which together with evidence of diachronus hillslope and valley floor instability, raises important questions and identifies uncertainties regarding the dynamics and extent of sediment transfer within river basins. Abstract: This paper deals with Holocene coastal changes of the Astakos plain in Akarnania, NW Greece. Palaeoenvironmental scenarios are based on the analysis of the lateral and vertical distribution patterns of sedimentary facies. Sediments from vibracorings were studied using geomorphological, sedimentological, microfaunal, palaeobotanical and geochemical methods. A geochronostratigraphy was achieved by 14C-AMS-dating of organic matter. We present palaeogeographical maps for different points in time since the mid-Holocene. The evolution of the coastal area was generally controlled by the migration of a complex system of a shallow marine embayment, an adjacent lagoonal environment and an adjoining coastal lake forced by the interaction of sea level rise, tectonic movements, and sediment supply from the hinterland. The maximum transgression of the Ionian Sea took place at circa 5500cal BC reaching approx. 1.1km inland. The lagoon as well as the coastal lake had their largest dimensions around 4500cal BC indicating a more humid climatic period. In the course of a long-lasting regression, an asymmetric sedimentation pattern developed. Around 2500cal BC it was characterized by strong fluvial deposition of the Xeropotamos in the western plain and a small and narrow marine embayment with associated lagoonal to limnic coastal water bodies in the eastern plain. The latter were related to karstic springs draining the adjacent Rigani ridge. Around 500cal BC the coastline lay about 200m landward of its present position. Possible harbour sites for the ancient polis of Astakos are (a) the area of modern Astakos where a mole in a position seawards of the present coast would have guaranteed deep water conditions for anchoring, or (b) the southeastern fringe of the plain where deep water prevailed and the nearby freshwater outlet protected the site from rapid siltation. We found increased torrential activity (i) for the 6th–5th millennium BC, (ii) for the 2nd half of the 1st millennium BC until Roman times, and (iii) at the end of the 19th century AD. At least the two younger phases are mostly due to anthropogenic soil erosion. Between the 4th and the 2nd millennium BC a period of ecological stability existed. Relative changes in sea level for the Bay of Astakos were reconstructed for the first time. Since the mid-Holocene, the relative sea level has never reached a higher position than today. It rose from 12.50m b.s.l. at 6200cal BC via 2.20m b.s.l. at 500cal BC to its present level. Besides eustatic reasons, tectonic subsidence due to the half graben structure of the area is the main trigger of the relative rise in sea level. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Relative sea-level changes in southwest Britain are poorly constrained because of limitations in the quality and quantity of existing geological data. As a consequence, in contrast to most other regions in the UK, it is not possible to reliably infer rates of land and sea-level change during the last few thousand years. Furthermore, geologically based sea-level reconstructions from this area display significant misfits with relative sea-level predictions based on a recent global model of the glacio-isostatic adjustment process. This paper presents a new record of relative sea-level change for the last 4000 years derived from radiocarbon-dated sea-level index points. In addition to providing information concerning the pattern and rates of late Holocene sea-level change, these data are used to evaluate the suggestion that the apparent misfits between model predictions and geological reconstructions can be satisfactorily explained as a consequence of the lowering of sea-level index points by sediment compaction. The results indicate that a simple, first-order method of decompaction based on the stratigraphic position of sea-level index points, can eliminate much of the misfit between reconstructions and predictions, and substantially reduce vertical scatter in geological data. They also suggest that the influence of compaction on sea-level data from this region may be larger than previously thought. The simple addition of reliable stratigraphic data, in combination with targeted sampling, has the potential to improve our understanding of the compaction process, and increase the utility of existing data. Abstract: A loess–paleosol sequence and a lake sediment record from the central Hexi Corridor in the drylands of NW China show patterns of persistent millennial- to centennial-scale climate variability during the Holocene epoch, which can be well correlated with abrupt climatic events reported from the North Atlantic and the Asian monsoon-dominated regimes. Our results show that the drylands in NW China might have been regulated both by the westerlies and by the East Asian summer monsoon (EASM) in a roughly synchronous manner. It seems that cold–dry intervals in the central Hexi Corridor may generally correspond to cooling phases in high latitudes of the Northern Hemisphere, and that cold/warm–wet intervals largely correlate with relatively warm phases in northern high latitudes. A candidate mechanism involving NAO/AO and ENSO dynamics is tentatively proposed to account for this synchroneity. Climatic patterns may be spatially different in the NW China drylands in response to the changing predominant control of either the westerlies or the EASM, depending on the contrast of their relative strengths. Glacier meltwater discharges associated with alpine warming may be partly responsible, at least for the two records discussed in this paper, for such spatial heterogeneity of climatic changes during the Holocene. More work is needed to evaluate the individual roles and combined impacts of the EASM, the westerlies and alpine glacier meltwater regulation on the NW China dryland dynamics. Abstract: Holocene reconstructions of relative sea-level (RSL) and environmental change in the coastal zone have become progressively more numerous since the importance of assessing possible future sea-level rises has become apparent. Traditionally this has been achieved using a combination of biological and physical indicators (e.g. pollen, diatoms, foraminifera, grain size, etc.). In some circumstances, microfossils can be rare or absent from Holocene sediments and in these cases carbon isotope ratios (δ 13C) and organic carbon to total nitrogen ratios (C/N) can be used because they have the potential to provide information as to the origin of organic material preserved in coastal environments. The distinction in δ 13C and C/N of the various sources of carbon to estuarine sediments has led to its wide use as a tracer of carbon pathways and storage in estuaries. More recently these techniques have been applied to Holocene sediments to decipher changes in palaeocoastal environments and thus position relative to sea-level and/or palaeoriver discharge, which have direct relevance to palaeoclimate. This paper reviews the studies that have utilised this technique and explores examples from a wide range of coastal environments (saltmarshes, estuaries, lagoons, isolation basins and fjords). It also discusses the potential alteration of geochemical signatures as a result of decompositional processes. Organic matter decomposition has been shown to change sediment δ 13C and C/N values and thus an understanding of the processes involved is necessary in order to have confidence in the palaeoenvironmental interpretation of Holocene δ 13C and C/N. Decompositional shifts in C/N, and particularly δ 13C, can occur over a relatively short time-period, however it is the direction of change in δ 13C and C/N, rather than absolute values, that is key for interpreting changes in relative sea-level and thus such changes are commonly preserved. On the basis of glacier and lake-level records, this paper attempts, for the first time, a comparison between high-resolution palaeohydrological and palaeoglaciological data in west-central Europe over the past 3500 years. A data set of tree-ring width, radiocarbon and archaeological data, in addition to historical sources, were used to reconstruct fluctuations of the Great Aletsch, the Gorner and the Lower Grindelwald glaciers in the Swiss Alps. The three ice-streams experienced nearly synchronous advances at c. 1000–600 BC and AD 500–600, 800–900; 1100–1200 and 1300–1860. These glacier fluctuations show strong correspondence with lake-level variations reconstructed in eastern France (Jura mountains and Pre-Alps) and on the Swiss Plateau. This supports the hypothesis of elimatically driven fluctuations. Historical date available for the period since AD 1550 reveal, in detail, various meteorological conditions behind the succesive glacier advances. Howere, in agreement with the general trend shown by the historical data, the synchroneity between glacier advances and periods of higher lake level suggests the impact of general winter cooling and an increase in summer moistur as responsible for reinforced feeding of both glaciers and lakes in west-central Europe ;over the past 3500 years. Finally, comparison between the Great Aletsech glacier and the residual 14C records supports the hypothesis that variations in solar activity were a major forcing factor of climatic oscillations in west-central Europe during the last Holocence. Interactions between Holocene environmental changes and human subsistence strategies in semi-arid parts of eastern Africa are relatively poorly understood because of a paucity of sites where contemporaneous archaeological and palaeoenvironmental records are preserved. This paper presents new AMS 14C-dated palaeoenvironmental evidence of mid- to late-Holocene vegetation changes, in the form of pollen, charcoal, mineralogical and δ13Cbulk data, from a floodplain location on the Laikipia Plateau, Kenya, and in the context of information on modern plant–environment relationships, existing and new archaeological and historical data, and published palaeoclimatic records. Although relatively poorly resolved, the evidence indicates more wooded and relatively humid conditions compared with the present from before c. 6600 BP to c. 1900 BP. Evidence for vegetation changes over the last two millennia is more finely resolved and indicates increased burning and the expansion of fire-modified Acacia bushland c. 1900 BP and grassland c. 1700 BP. Burning to improve and extend pasture, and possibly to eradicate disease-prone habitats, may have been facilitated by prolonged periods of moisture deficits that might also have facilitated the spread of food production technologies. Vegetation changes c. 700 BP are associated with evidence for the occurrence of fires locally and could represent the activities of people and their animals close to the study site. The focus of this paper is on the reconstruction of the mid-Holocene climatic changes based on the pollen records contained in a 6.2 m thick section in the southern part of the Tengger Desert, northwestern China. To understand the modern analogues of the mid-Holocene changes, modern pollen spectra across different vegetation zones from the Qilian Mountains to the lowland Tengger Desert were studied first. Four pollen combinations were identified, corresponding to four different modern ecological environments: (1) a Picea-Artemisia combination in a spruce forest and its vicinity; (2) an Artemisia-Chenopodiaceae-Gramineae-Salix combination in a mixture belt of montane grassland and poplar woodland; (3) a Chenopodiaceae-Artemisia-Nitraria combination in a desert steppe belt; and (4) an Elaeagnus-Artemisia-Chenopodiaceae-Nitraria combination in a desert riparian forest. Our study also shows that a relatively low percentage of Picea pollen (30–10%) seems to be associated with water transportation (alluvial deposits) and a very low percentage of Picea pollen (10–5%) appears to be related to long-distance air transportation. With references to the modern relationships between pollen assemblages and associated bioclimates, the pollen sequence covering the period between 8500 and 3000 cal. BP was used to infer the climatic change history. The results show that a warmer and drier climate dominated between 8500 and 7950 cal. BP. Subsequent decreases in Artemisia and warm desert forbs/shrubs taxa and contemporaneous fluctuating increases in montane coniferous and aquatics elements from 7950 to 7400 cal. BP reflect a fluctuating increase in humidity and/or a fluctuating decrease in temperature. The following period from 7400 to 5650 cal. BP was generally warm with the Holocene Climate Optimum occurring between 7400 and 6500 cal. BP. A remarkably cool spell followed between 6500 and 6300 cal. BP that was then succeeded by a warmer and more humid period between 6300 and 5650 cal. BP. The period between 5650 and 4450 cal. BP was characterized by drastic oscillations in climatic conditions with three humid and probably cold spells intervened by three relatively dry and warm spells. The period between 4450 and 3500 cal. This paper examines the mid- to late-Holocene (c. 6850-1160 cal. yr BP) environmental history of Sierra de Gádor in southern Spain. The local vegetation dynamics are reconstructed through the palaeoecological record obtained from a lacustrine deposit situated at 1530 m. Various hypotheses are considered to explain the vegetation dynamics apparent in the palaeoecological evidence, including climatic change, fire occurrence and human activity. Although the vegetation in this region is sensitive to climatic change, threshold events driven by ecological factors are also apparent. Climatic events include a thermo-mesophytic optimum with abundance of deciduous trees and maximum lake water level found from c. 6850 to 5500 cal. yr BP. In contrast, changes in the frequency of major fire episodes appear to have shaped interspecific relationships and vegetation change, especially from c. 4200 cal. yr BP onwards. Biotic properties of the ecosystem such as the inertia of established tree populations, interconnected with competition adjustments, appear also to have played a role. Over the last two millennia, overgrazing, combined with natural and/or human-set fires, appears to have pushed mountain forests over a threshold leading to the spread of grassland, thorny scrub, junipers and nitrophilous communities. Mediterranean ecosystems contain some of the highest levels of plant diversity of any region on Earth and are amongst those believed to be most at risk from the consequences of global warming. Yet such ecosystems are not static and have responded to environmental changes at a variety of scales and from a variety of causes, particularly climatic and anthropogenic. The purpose of this paper is to review recent research on environmental change and ecosystem response. Long-term records are available to analyse changes over glacial-interglacial cycles, while high resolution records show the sensitivity and coupling of Mediterranean, North Atlantic and Greenland records. For the Holocene, there is continued debate about the relative impact of anthropogenic activity, but there is also increasing recognition that mediterraneantype ecosystems should not be regarded as fragile, degraded landscapes, but are disturbanceadapted. Nevertheless, conservation measures face increasing challenges from contemporary climate change and human pressures. Some insights into the identification of refugial areas, either in glacial times or for present-day conservation purposes, come from molecular biogeographical studies of past faunal and floral distribution. This paper reviews the development of the current 'supra-long' pine chronology for northern Finnish Lapland. In the forest-tundra ecotone region of northern Finnish Lapland over 250 samples from living Scots pines (Pinus sylvestris L.) and over 1700 samples of subfossil pines have been collected for dendrochronological studies. In addition, over 1400 subfossils have been sampled from the forested area of Finnish Lapland. The goal of the research was to build a more than 7000-year long continuous pine ring-width chronology. The construction of the chronology is now completed. The intensive phase of the data collection and chronology building lasted about 10 years, 1989 to 1999. The major part of the Finnish Lapland master curve was constructed several years ago, but it was extremely difficult to bridge the c. 300-year gap, prior to 165 BC between the 'absolute' younger part of the chronology and the 'floating' older part. The crucial samples were identified and assembled in the chronology in early 1999, and there is now an unbroken pine chronology about 7500 years long constructed from the subfossil forest-limit pines of northern Finnish Lapland. The severe growth depression centred on 330 BC is likely to have been caused by increased wetness. A brief summary is presented of inferred tree-line changes from the location of the samples. This editorial introduces a special issue of The Holocene containing 12 papers which represent highlights from a European Commission research project: 'Analysis of Dendrochronological Variability and Associated Natural Climates in Eurasia - the last 10000 years' (ADVANCE-10K). The focus is on the climatic implications of dendrochronology and especially on developing an integrated, dendrochronological approach to high-resolution climatic reconstruction in the Holocene, with the ultimate aim of extending this to the global scale. Emphasis is given to: (1) long chronologies from northern Fennoscandia (pine), temperate central and western Europe (oak) and Siberia (larch); (2) the precise climatic signals reflected in these chronologies and possible links to atmospheric circulation patterns; (3) complementary methodologies for extracting climatic information from subfossil trees in a variety of different environmental settings; and (4) the use of a large (subhemispheric) network of tree-ring density data to examine detailed, geographical patterns in climatic variability at a high temporal resolution. Systematic surveys and excavations were carried out during the 1990–1996 field seasons in the Tadrart Acacus and surrounding areas, shedding new light on the climatic changes and cultural dynamics which occurred during the Holocene. Speleothems (cave dripstones) are formed as a part of the meteoric water cycle and therefore vari-ations in their growth rate and composition reflect environmental changes on the land surface above the cave. Since they are continental deposits, and possess a remarkably accurate dating potential, using TIMS U-series techniques, speleothems are important palaeoclimatic archives for the terrestrial environment, complementing the marine and ice-core records. The climatic proxies that can be deciphered from speleothems are growth rate, stable isotope composition (δ[sup 18]O, δ[sup 13] C), organic (humic) matter and trace element composition, as well as luminescent laminae, which may display annual rhythms. This paper presents data on and discusses the degree of postglacial stability of the northern Canadian tree limit. Holocene climatic changes have been both directional and synchronous for this region, though deteriorations/ameliorations either (1) lagged from west to east, (2) were buffered by local geographic factors, or (3) were not registered in the fossil record owing to the inherent persistence of the vegetation at some sites. The present northern tree limit in eastern Canada is in equilibrium with the prevailing climate, with the tree populations successfully regenerating both sexually and vegetatively. These tree stands are still occupying their maximum Hypsithermal positions. In contrast, the tree limit, tree line, and intervening forest-tundra ecotone in central and western Canada are out of equilibrium with today's climate. These populations are not sexually regenerative and apparently became established during warmer climates where the tree line was north of its present position. As such, they are susceptible to destruction by further climatic deterioration or anthropogenic disruption. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In a comment on the paper by Sundqvist et al. (2007a), Hammarlund and Edwards suggest that the oxygen isotope signal of the speleothem records K1 and L4 from northwestern Sweden as well as for the earlier published stalagmite SG93 from northern Norway should mainly reflect variation in the δ18O of mean annual precipitation. The main argument used by the authors is that the SG93 dδ18O record should show remarkable similarities with the lacustrine carbonate dδ18O record from Lake Tibetanus. The similarities between SG93 and Lake Tibetanus are mainly seen for the period between 10 and 9 ka BP, which is a period where both records have higher dδ18O values compared with later in the Holocene. If true, this would indicate that temperatures in northern Scandinavia would have reached their Holocene maximum between 10 and 9 ka BP, which is contrary to what has been reported from other archives in the region which place the Holocene climatic optimum somewhere between 8 and 5 ka BP. Several factors affect the dδ18O of speleothems and definitely also by annual mean dδ18O of the local precipitation. However, for Holocene speleothems from northern Scandinavia as well as from the Alps this signal seems to be overridden by other factors, such as variable mixing of summer and winter precipitation of cave drip water as well as the temperature-dependent fractionation between calcite and water. But the relative importance of the factors can differ between different timescales, caves and even speleothems from the same cave, depending on hydrological pathways. To better understand the factors controlling the stable oxygen isotopes in precipitation and proxy archives back in time there is a need for more highly resolved records as well as for more atmospheric and hydrological modelling.
