This article analyzed in the laboratory the use of Recycled Concrete Aggregates (RCA) when they are incorporated as coarse aggregates in a hot dense asphalt mixture MDC-19. The main problem of the use of RCA in MDCs is its high absorption caused by the mortar that covers the particles, which causes an increase in the optimum asphalt content and, consequently, high production costs. In order to solve this problem, chemical treatments were carried out on the surface of the RCA aggregate using 1, 3 and 5 cycles of immersion in a magnesium sulfate solution, according to the aggregate durability test specified by AASHTO T 104-99. On the mixtures that incorporated RCA (with and without chemical treatment), resistance tests were carried out under monotonic load (Marshall and indirect tensile strength) and wear resistance to Cantabrian abrasion. The results show that the use of chemically treated RCA in the manufacture of asphalt mixtures increases the resistance un- der monotonic load (Marshall test and indirect tensile strength in dry conditions), providing greater cohesion and a slight increase in adherence with reference to the control mix. Additionally, it was evidenced that the RCA aggregate subjected to 5 cycles provides similar resistance in the asphalt mixture to indirect traction under wet conditions and Cantabrian wear than the control sample. El presente artículo analizó en laboratorio el uso de Agregados Reciclados de Concreto (RCA) cuando son incorporados como agregados gruesos en una mezcla asfáltica densa en caliente mdc-19. El principal problema de la utilización del RCA en mdcs es su elevada absorción originada por el mortero que recubre las partículas, lo cual origina un incremento del contenido óptimo de asfalto y, consecuentemente, altos costos de producción. Para solucionar tal problema, se realizaron tratamientos químicos sobre la superficie del agregado RCA utilizando 1, 3 y 5 ciclos de inmersión en una solución de sulfato de magnesio, conforme al ensayo de durabilidad de agregados especificado por AASHTO T 104-99. Sobre las mezclas que incorporaron RCA (con y sin el tratamiento químico), fueron ejecutados ensayos de resistencia bajo carga monotónica (Marshall y resistencia a la tracción indirecta) y resistencia al desgaste a la abrasión Cántabro. Los resultados evidencian que la utilización del RCA tratado químicamente en la fabricación de mezclas asfálticas aumenta la resistencia bajo carga monotónica (ensayo Marshall y resistencia a la tracción indirecta en condiciones secas), proporcionando mayor cohesión y un leve aumento en la adherencia con referencia a la mezcla de control. Adicionalmente, se evidenció que el agregado RCA sometido a 5 ciclos proporciona similar resistencia en la mezcla asfáltica a la tracción indirecta bajo condición húmeda y desgaste Cántabro que la muestra de control.

A relatively recent development in asphalt pavement technology, warm mix asphalt (WMA) offers a number of benefits. Although its most important advantage is environmental in nature, it also shows technical and economic benefits. This paper presents and discusses results for the laboratory evaluation of a WMA, which were compared to traditional hot mix asphalts (HMA). Two samples of WMA and two samples of HMA with nominal maximum aggregate sizes of 10 mm and 19.0 mm were evaluated. A liquid chemical solution was used to make WMA (Patent pending for this additive). The purpose of this additive was to induce foaming of the asphalt binder AC 60-70 (PG 58-22). Moisture susceptibility and strength under monotonic and dynamic loading were studied. In addition, a set of tests were performed: Marshall, resilient modulus, permanent deformation and indirect tensile strength. The research led to the conclusion that the WMA chemical additive decreases mix temperatures by 30° C, which in turn, translates into better workability and volumetric composition. Furthermore, the WMA showed higher levels of resistance to both moisture damage and high service temperatures under monotonic and dynamic loading. La principal ventaja de emplear mezclas asfálticas tibias (WMA, por sus siglas en inglés) es de carácter ambiental, aunque ofrecen adicionalmente ventajas técnicas y económicas. El artículo presenta y discute los resultados de una fase experimental ejecutada con el fin de comparar el comportamiento que experimenta una mezcla WMA con respecto a una mezcla densa en caliente tradicional (HMA, por sus siglas en inglés). Dos mezclas WMA y dos HMA se fabricaron empleando como tamaño máximo de partícula 10 mm y 19 mm. Las mezclas WMA se modificaron con un aditivo líquido que espuma el asfalto. El aditivo actualmente se encuentra en proceso de patente. El asfalto base utilizado para la fabricación de las mezclas fue CA 60-70 (PG 58-22). Sobre las mezclas se midieron la resistencia bajo carga monotónica y dinámica, así como la resistencia al daño por humedad, empleando ensayos Marshall, módulo resiliente, deformación permanente y resistencia a la tracción indirecta. Como conclusión general se reporta que el aditivo químico disminuye la temperatura de la mezcla en 30°C, así mismo contribuye con una adecuada trabajabilidad y composición volumétrica de la mezcla WMA. Adicionalmente, las mezclas WMA experimentan mayor resistencia bajo carga monotónica y dinámica a altas temperaturas de servicio, así como mayor resistencia al daño por humedad.

Warm Mix Asphalt (WMA) technology offers a wide range of potential for use in road construction projects. Although the main advantage of using WMA mixtures is environmental, there are also noteworthy technical and economic benefits. This paper discusses results for the laboratory evaluation of WMA mixtures and their subsequent comparison to traditional hot mix asphalts (HMA). WMA and HMA mixtures of nominal maximum aggregate size of 25 mm were employed in this study. The WMAs were obtained by means of a liquid chemical solution that foams the asphalt binder AC 60-70 (PG 58-22). Aspects studied include strength under monotonic and dynamic loading. Additionally, a battery of tests was performed: Marshall, resilient modulus, permanent deformation and indirect tensile strength. The research herein leads to the conclusion that the WMA chemical additive decreases mix temperatures by 30° C, which, in turn, translates into better mixture workability and volumetric composition. Furthermore, WMAs display higher levels of resistance to high service temperatures under monotonic and dynamic loading. La tecnología de las mezclas asfálticas tibias (WMA por sus siglas en inglés) brinda una amplia oportunidad de éxito en la construcción de capas asfálticas para carreteras. Su principal ventaja es de carácter ambiental, aunque también ofrece ventajas técnicas y económicas. El artículo presenta los resultados experimentales de un estudio ejecutado con el fin de evaluar la resistencia mecánica de una mezcla asfáltica tibia, fabricada empleando un aditivo químico líquido que espuma el asfalto. Para tal fin, se evaluó sobre la mezcla la resistencia bajo carga monotónica empleando el ensayo Marshall y el de tracción indirecta, el cambio en la composición volumétrica, la rigidez bajo carga cíclica y la resistencia a la deformación permanente. Como granulometría de referencia se utilizó la de la mezcla densa en caliente MDC-25 (INVIAS, 2013) y como ligante, cemento asfáltico tipo CA 60-70. En conclusión, se reporta que el aditivo empleado es capaz de reducir la temperatura de la mezcla asfáltica en caliente de referencia MDC-25 en 30°C, generando una mezcla tibia con composición volumétrica similar y de mayor rigidez y resistencia bajo carga monotónica y cíclica.

La producción de llenante mineral (Filler) afecta el medio ambiente a causa del elevado consumo energético requerido para su obtención, reflejado en la trituración de las rocas y agregados pétreos provenientes de canteras o ríos, ocasionando deforestación, contaminación de fuentes hídricas, entre otros impactos antrópicos. Lo anterior fundamenta la importancia de este estudio, en el cual se pretende a futuro emplear arcilla de alta plasticidad (considerada un desecho en las excavaciones) tratada térmicamente como sustituto de llenante mineral o filler de mezclas asfálticas. En la investigación se empleó una arcilla industrial tipo bentonita, caracterizada mediante ensayos de difracción de rayos X y fluorescencia. Dicho material fue sometido a tratamientos térmicos, proceso en el cual se buscó eliminar propiedades ingenieriles indeseables como la plasticidad y el potencial de expansión, para posteriormente emplearse como llenante mineral en una mezcla de concreto asfáltico tipo MDC-19. Se realizaron ensayos Marshall, tracción indirecta, módulo resiliente, deformación permanente, fatiga y evaluación de la resistencia a la abrasión (Cantabro) a una mezcla densa en caliente tipo MDC-19, la cual usó como llenantes minerales, uno de origen natural y la bentonita (con y sin tratamiento térmico). La estimación de la significancia en los resultados, se obtuvo mediante un análisis de varianza ANOVA con un nivel de confianza del 95%. In the research, an industrial bentonite-type clay was used, characterized by X-ray diffractometry and X-ray fluorescence. This material was subjected to thermal treatments, process in which it was sought to eliminate undesirable engineering properties such as plasticity and the potential for swelling, to be subsequently used as a mineral filler in an hot mix asphalt (HMA). Marshall tests, indirect tensile strength test, resilient modulus, permanent deformation, fatigue test and evaluation of abrasion resistance (Cantabro test) were carried out on a dense hot mix asphalt (HMA-19), which used as mineral fillers, one of natural origin and bentonite (with and without heat treatment).
