A highly branched PNDC demulsifier with 2,6‐naphthalenedicarboxylate as centronucleus was prepared by an efficient "one‐pot" strategy. The product was characterized by FT‐IR, 1H‐NMR, and TGA. The bottle test was performed to explore the effect of temperature, settling time, pH value, and concentration on the demulsification efficiency (DE). The DE reached an optimal value of 94.63% when the concentration of PNDC, settling time and operated temperature were 100 mg/L, 60 min and 70°C, respectively. Also, the DE could reach 91.58% when the concentration was only 20 mg/L at the same conditions. It showed that PNDC had an excellent performance in W/O emulsions with an extremely low concentration. Especially, PNDC could be used over a wide pH range (4–12) and high salinities, indicating that it had a good salt, acid and alkaline tolerance. In addition, the interfacial tension (IFT), surface tension (SFT), elastic modulus and micrograph analysis were carried out to investigate the possible mechanism. An ANPC demulsifier for oily wastewater (OW) was obtained through amine functionalization of regenerated cellulose derived from waste cotton textiles by a hydrothermal process. ANPC was systematically analyzed through morphology, composition, chemical properties, and interfacial properties. The results showed that ANPC had good interfacial activity and a strong ability to reduce the interfacial tension. The bottle test displayed that the light transmittance of separated water (LT) could reach 92.5% and the corresponding oil removal rate (ORR) was 99.4% when the ANPC dosage was 125 mg/L at room temperature. Importantly, ANPC could be adopted at a wide pH range and high salinity. Also, the possible demulsification mechanism was explored by wettability, interfacial activity, interfacial film self-assembly, dynamic interfacial tension, Zeta potential, elasticity modulus and micrographs. Common commercial demulsifiers are typically made from ethylene oxide and propylene oxide. The production process is dangerous and complex, with poor adaptability and high cost. In this work, cotton modified with polyethylene polyamine was utilized as a demulsifier for the treatment of oily wastewater. The chemical structure and morphology of the as-prepared sample (CPN) were characterized by IR spectrum and SEM. The effect of CPN dosage, pH value, and salinity on the demulsification performance of oily wastewater was explored through the bottle tests. The results showed that the light transmittance of separated water was 81.7% and the corresponding deoiling rate was 98.5% when a CPN dosage of 25 mg/L was used at room temperature for 30 min. The interfacial properties were also systematically investigated, and the results indicated that CPN had better interfacial activity and a stronger reduction capability of interfacial tension compared to asphaltenes. The finding initiated and accelerated the demulsification process of oily wastewater. Based on the outstanding performance of this biomass-derived demulsifier, it shows promising potential for application in the treatment of oily wastewater. • Environmentally friendly and low-cost cotton was used as raw materials. • A simple process was carried for the synthesis of demulsifier. • High demulsification efficiency was obtained at ambient temperature using an ultra-low dosage of 25 mg/L. Oily wastewater produced in the process of oil extraction has a potential threat to the environment. In this paper, diethylenetriamine was used to modify rice straw powder (RSP) by a solvent-free strategy, and the obtained product (AM-RSP) was utilized to dispose oily wastewater. AM-RSP was characterized by Field emission scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM), energy dispersive spectrometer (EDS), Fourier transform infrared spectroscope (FT-IR) and BET. The factors affecting the demulsification performance (DP) such as dosage, salinity and pH value were detailly investigated. The results indicated that light transmittance (E T) and oil removal rate (E R) of separated water could reach 93.5% and 96.5%, respectively, within 40 min with 150 mg/L of AM-RSP at room temperature. Also, AM-RSP had a good salt resistance. In addition, three-phase contact angle (TCA), formation of interfacial film, interfacial activity, dynamic interfacial tension (IFT), coalescence time of droplets and zeta potential were adopted to probe the demulsification mechanism. • AM-RSP was prepared by a simple solvent-free method. • Rice straw as bio-waste was used as raw materials. • AM-RSP has a high demulsification efficiency in oily wastewater. • AM-RSP is stable and environmentally friendly. A hyperbranched polymer (PDPD) was synthesized using diethyl diphenyl-p-phenylenediamine as centronucleus. Its chemical structure was characterized by 1H NMR and FT-IR, and thermal stability was evaluated by thermogravimetric analysis. The effect of concentration, temperature, settling time and salinity on the demulsification performance was systematically studied in oily wastewater. The transmittance of separated water (TSW) and oil removal ratio (ORR) could reach 85.7% and 99.6%, respectively, after demulsifying with 80 mg/L of PDPD for 4 h at 25 °C. Moreover, PDPD also had high salt tolerance. In addition, the dynamic interfacial tension (IFT), zeta potential and microscopic observation were utilized to explore a possible demulsification mechanism. This work not only provides a new hyperbranched demulsifier for the demulsification of oily wastewater, but also brings some references for the study of demulsification mechanism. A three-branch structure demulsifier (GTE-DDA) for the treatment of water-in-crude oil (W/O) emulsions was synthesized by a one-step method using glycerol triglycidyl ether (GTE) as core and dodecyl amine (DDA) as branched chain. It was characterized by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), nuclear magnetic resonance hydrogen spectra (1H NMR) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). Some key parameters such as the concentration of GTE-DDA, settling time, operated temperature and salinity on demulsification efficiency (DE) were systematically explored. The DE reached 87.55% after treating with 400 mg/L of GTE-DDA at 50 °C for 30 min. The demulsifying temperature was significantly lower than those reported in literatures (60-80℃). Especially, a rise in temperature could further improved the DE. In addition, GTE-DDA had an excellent salt tolerance. The possible mechanism was investigated by the interfacial tension (IFT), three-phase contact angle (CA) and microscopic observation. Water-in-oil emulsions are frequently encountered in petroleum extraction. In this paper, CRB-SiO 2 , a cost-efficient and environmentally friendly demulsifier, was synthesized by a two-step method. The chemical structure and surface morphology were analyzed by flourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), respectively. The effect of salinity, concentration, temperature and pH value on the demulsification efficiency (DE) was investigated in detail. The DE reached 93.98% with 600 mg/L of CRB-SiO 2 at 70 °C. Also, it had an excellent tolerance of salt, acid and alkali. Moreover, the demulsification mechanism was also studied through three-phase contact angle, interfacial tension and self-assembly of interfacial membrane. CRB-SiO 2 has an amphiphilic structure and lower interfacial tension (IFT) around 37.75 mN/m. Accordingly, it can be easily adsorbed at the water-oil interface, destroying the interface membrane and initiating the separation of oil and water. In summary, CRB-SiO 2 has a potential application in petrochemical industry.
