Interest in modeling contemporary crime trends, a task that has historically been considered valuable to the public, researchers, and policymakers, is resurging. Advancements in criminology have made it clear that understanding crime trends necessarily involves understanding trends in how likely individuals are to report crimes to the police, as well as how likely the police are to accurately record those crimes. In this paper, we use dynamic linear models to simultaneously model the time series for several crime types in order to gain insight into trends in crime and crime reporting. We analyze crime data from Chicago spanning 2007 through 2016 and show how correlations in the way crime trends evolve may contain information about drivers of crime and crime reporting. We provide evidence of substantial differences in the relationships between the trends of crimes of different types depending on whether crimes are violent or nonviolent and whether or not crimes are tracked in the FBI’s Uniform Crime Report. Two main theoretical concepts to interrogate news content were adopted in this study. The Frankfurt School concepts of ideology (and in particular Althusser's concept ideological state apparatus) and the British Cultural Studies concept, moral panic, help document how 2 examples of print media covered a local encounter between young Black men and the police in one community. By reconceptualizing the press as an ideological state apparatus and using the concept moral panic, the authors include dimensions that may more forcefully illustrate links between media content and lived experience. The news concerning the death of Black Panther leader, Fred Hampton, challenged the existing status quo by bringing race and class issues to the forefront. The Black press (Chicago Daily Defender) provided an alternative understanding to the one offered by the general press (Chicago Tribune). Evidence is offered for how and under what circumstances the discourse of journalism professional values and norms suppress or obscure minority voices. The purpose of this study was: (1) to assess the impact of an incident of racial profiling on residents' attitudes about profiling; and (2) to examine the effects of exposure to a video clip of deliberation about the incident on residents' beliefs about the causes of profiling. All residents, White and minority, were less likely to believe that Chicago police officers engaged in profiling after the incident. These findings suggest that attitudes about the prevalence of racial profiling are susceptible to the manner in which the media construct incidents of police misconduct. Exposure to the video clip was not related to differences in residents' beliefs about the causes of profiling, but was related to differences in perceptions of the dangerousness of traffic stops. The findings highlight the need for more research on how media constructions of police misconduct influence attitudes about profiling and impact community-police relations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Wright, Cullen, and Blankenship (1995) examined print media constructions of a chicken-processing plant fire that killed scores of workers. They found that newspaper coverage of the fire was reluctant to describe the event as corporate violence. We examine the generalizability of Wright et al.'s study by conducting a content analysis of newspaper coverage of two events at nightclubs in Chicago, Illinois, and Warwick, Rhode Island, that left numerous people dead and injured. We found that although newspapers did discuss the extent of personal harm caused by the disasters and the potential criminal sanctions that could be imposed, they seldom made any specific claims as to the cause of the events (i.e., whether they were due to an accident, negligence, or criminal behavior). Contrasting findings between our study and Wright et al.'s suggests that more research should be done if we are to understand media constructions of corporate and white-collar violence.
