The paper is focused on the problem of weather radar precipitation compositing and aims to produce the data for the whole measurement domain in a way that ensures the quality of the composite is as high as possible. This is achieved by employing information about the data quality in the form of a quality index (QI) map. Different techniques that take the QI values as the compositing criterion are investigated; they apply the maximum or the weighted mean from particular radars. The proposed method employs a combination of the QI value and the distance from the radar site as a criterion in a weighted mean approach. Different versions of the quality‐based techniques are compared with standard techniques that are based on the maximum of estimated precipitation and distance from the nearest radar site. Verification of the techniques was performed employing statistical metrics by comparison against rain gauge observations. Moreover qualitative verification with assessment of seamlessness and the presence of contamination was carried out on long‐term accumulations of the composites generated by means of different methods. The measurement of rainfall has a long history, but despite its apparent simplicity it is difficult to quantify accurately. The common installation of raingauges with rims above the ground surface results in a difference between the rainfall caught and the amount reaching ground level, termed undercatch. The UK standard installation of raingauges is for their rim to be sited at 0.305 m above the ground; however, the use of weighing gauges installed at a minimum rim height of 1 m has increased in recent years. The installation of these weighing raingauges raises complex questions of homogeneity in rainfall data across space and time. Here, we investigate the impact of these changes using field trials of commonly deployed UK raingauges at a site in south-east England. This paper discusses the results of the trial, exploring the variation in and potential drivers of undercatch with differing gauge sitings. With varying standards for gauge heights around the world and new rainfall measurement technologies coming to the market all the time, improved understanding of undercatch is needed to inform evolving operational practices and explore the possibility of developing catch correction algorithms to remove arising inhomogeneity in precipitation datasets. The use of radar measurements for the space time estimation of precipitation has for many decades been a central topic in hydro-meteorology. In this paper we are interested specifically in daily and sub-daily extreme values of precipitation at gauged or ungauged locations which are important for design. The purpose of the paper is to develop a methodology to combine daily precipitation observations and radar measurements to estimate sub-daily extremes at point locations. Radar data corrected using precipitation-reflectivity relationships lead to biased estimations of extremes. Different possibilities of correcting systematic errors using the daily observations are investigated. Observed gauged daily amounts are interpolated to unsampled points and subsequently disaggregated using the sub-daily values obtained by the radar. Different corrections based on the spatial variability and the subdaily entropy of scaled rainfall distributions are used to provide unbiased corrections of short duration extremes. Additionally a statistical procedure not based on a matching day by day correction is tested. In this last procedure as we are only interested in rare extremes, low to medium values of rainfall depth were neglected leaving a small number of L days of ranked daily maxima in each set per year, whose sum typically comprises about 50% of each annual rainfall total. The sum of these L day maxima is first iterpolated using a Kriging procedure. Subsequently this sum is disaggregated to daily values using a nearest neighbour procedure. The daily sums are then disaggregated by using the relative values of the biggest L radar based days. Of course, the timings of radar and gauge maxima can be different, so the method presented here uses radar for disaggregating daily gauge totals down to 15 min intervals in order to extract the maxima of sub-hourly through to daily rainfall. The methodologies were tested in South Africa, where an S-band radar operated relatively continuously at Bethlehem from 1998 to 2003, whose scan at 1.5 km above ground [CAPPI] overlapped a dense (10 km spacing) set of 45 pluviometers recording in the same 6-year period. This valuable set of data was obtained from each of 37 selected radar pixels [1 km square in plan] which contained a pluviometer not masked out by the radar foot-print. The pluviometer data were also aggregated to daily totals, for the same purpose. The extremes obtained using disaggregation methods were compared to the observed extremes in a cross validation procedure. The unusual and novel goal was not to obtain the reproduction of the precipitation matching in space and time, but to obtain frequency distributions of the point extremes, which we found to be stable. This paper evaluates several daily precipitation products over western and central Europe, identifies and documents their respective strengths and shortcomings, and relates these to uncertainties associated with each of the products. We analyze one gauge-based, three satellite-based, and two reanalysis-based products using high-density rain gauge observations as reference. First, we assess spatial patterns and frequency distributions using aggregated statistics. Then, we determine the skill of precipitation event detection from these products with a focus on extremes, using temporally and spatially matched pairs of precipitation estimates. The results show that the quality of the datasets largely depends on the region, season, and precipitation characteristic addressed. The satellite and the reanalysis precipitation products are found to have difficulties in accurately representing precipitation frequency with local overestimations of more than 40%, which occur mostly in dry regions (all products) as well as along coastlines and over cold/frozen surfaces (satellite-based products). The frequency distributions of wet-day intensities are generally well reproduced by all products. Concerning the frequency distributions of wet-spell durations, the satellite-based products are found to have clear deficiencies for maritime-influenced precipitation regimes. Moreover, the analysis of the detection of extreme precipitation events reveals that none of the non-station-based datasets shows skill at the shortest temporal and spatial scales (1 day, 0.25°), but at and above the 3-day and 1.25° scale the products start to exhibit skill over large parts of the domain. Noting a strong imperative to understand precipitation extremes, and that considerable uncertainty affects observational data sets, this paper compares the representation of extremes in a number of widely used daily gridded products, derived from rain gauge data, satellite retrieval and reanalysis for the conterminous United States. Analysis is based upon the concept of "tail dependence" arising in multivariate extreme value theory, and we infer the level of temporal dependence in the joint tail of the precipitation probability distribution for pairwise comparisons of products. In this way, we consider the range of products more like an ensemble and examine the relationships between members, and do not attempt to define, or compare products to, some ground truth. Linear correlation between products is also computed. Considerable discrepancy between groups of products, both annually and seasonally, is linked to source data and complex terrain. In particular, products based on rain gauge data showed remarkable similarity, but differed considerably, showing almost total loss of extremal dependence during DJF in mountainous regions, when compared with satellite products. Additionally, simulated re-forecasts revealed reasonable temporal agreement with large scale generated extremes. The diversity and extent of discrepancies identified across all products raises important questions about their use, and we urge caution, particularly for products derived from satellite data. Deriving high quality precipitation estimates at high spatial resolution is of prime importance for many hydrological, meteorological, and environmental investigations. Rain gauge observations and satellite-derived precipitation data are two main sources of precipitation estimates. Gauge observations are accurate and reliable, but are heavily point-based and sparse in areas of rugged or complex terrains. Satellite-derived precipitation products can cover large areas, but they are generally characterized by inherent bias. To optimize the use of both datasets, we propose in this paper, a downscaling-integration framework to generate high quality monthly precipitation datasets at 1 km spatial resolution by merging rain gauge observations and TRMM 3B43 products. Firstly, an area-to-point kriging (ATPK) approach is used to downscale the original TRMM product to 1 km, so as to ensure a fair comparison with rain gauge data. Then, the downscaled TRMM precipitation datasets are integrated with the gauge observations using geographically weighted regression kriging (GWRK). The geographical factors (i.e. longitude, latitude and elevation) are also used as auxiliary variables in the GWRK model. Applying this approach to an experiment conducted at the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River in China from 2001 to 2014 shows that: (1) the downscaled monthly TRMM precipitation data by ATPK are more accurate than the original TRMM estimates; (2) the GWRK model employing the downscaled TRMM precipitation data and geographical factors provides better monthly precipitation estimates than the conventional ordinary kriging (OK) interpolation and the commonly used merging methods (i.e. geographical difference analysis, GDA and kriging with external drift, KED); (3) the GWRK method reduces the influence of the inaccuracy (bias) of satellite-derived precipitation data on the precipitation estimates compared to GDA. The approach presented in this study has provided an efficient alternative for solving the scale mismatch problem between point-based gauge data and low resolution satellite data, and producing improved precipitation data at high spatial resolution. Increasing meteorological data availability and quality implies an adaptation of the interpolation methods for data combination. In this paper, we propose a new method to efficiently combine weather radar data with data from two heated rain gauge networks of different quality. The two networks being non-collocated (no common location between the two networks), pseudo cross-variograms are used to compute the linear model of coregionalization for kriging computation. This allows considering the two networks independently in a co-kriging approach. The methodology is applied to the Upper Rhône River basin, an Alpine catchment in Switzerland with a complex topography and an area of about 5300 km 2 . The analysis explores the newly proposed Regression co-kriging approach, in which two independent rain gauge networks are considered as primary and secondary kriging variables. Regression co-kriging is compared to four other methods, including the commonly applied Inverse distance weighting method used as baseline scenario. Incorporation of additional networks located within and around the target region in the interpolation computation is also explored. The results firstly demonstrate the added value of the radar information as compared to using only ground stations. As compared to Regression kriging using only the network of highest quality, the Regression co-kriging method using both networks slightly increases the performance. A key outcome of the study is that Regression co-kriging performs better than Inverse distance weighting even for the data availability scenario when the radar network was providing lower quality radar data over the studied basin. The results and discussion underline that combining meteorological information from different rain gauge networks with different equipments remains challenging for operational purposes. Future research in this field should in particular focus on additional pre-processing of the radar data to account for example for areas of low visibility of the weather radars due to the topography. Precipitation displays a remarkable variability in space and time. An important yet poorly documented aspect of this variability is intermittency. In this paper, a new way of quantifying intermittency based on the burstiness B and memory M of interamount times is proposed. The method is applied to a unique dataset of 325 high-resolution rain gauges in the United States and Europe. Results show that the M- B diagram provides useful insight into local precipitation patterns and can be used to study intermittency over a wide range of temporal scales. It is found that precipitation tends to be more intermittent in warm and dry climates with the largest observed values in the southwest of the United States (i.e., California, Nevada, Arizona, and Texas). Low-to-moderate values are reported for the northeastern United States, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, and Germany. In the second half of the paper, the new metrics are applied to daily rainfall data for 1954-2013 to investigate regional trends in intermittency due to climate variability and global warming. No evidence is found of a global shift in intermittency but a weak trend toward burstier precipitation patterns and longer dry spells in the south of Europe (i.e., Portugal, Spain, and Italy) and an opposite trend toward steadier and more correlated precipitation patterns in Norway, Sweden, and Finland is observed. In a series of two papers, rain-rate retrievals based on specific attenuation A at radar X-band wavelength using the R( A) method presented by Ryzhkov et al. are thoroughly investigated. Continuous time series of overlapping measurements from two polarimetric X-band weather radars in Germany during the summers of 2011-13 are used to analyze various aspects of the method, like miscalibration correction, ground clutter contamination, partial beam blockage (PBB), sensitivity to precipitation characteristics, and sensitivity to temperature assumptions in the retrievals. In Part I of the series, the relations inherent to the R( A) method were used to calculate radar reflectivity Z from specific attenuation and it was compared with measured reflectivity to estimate PBB and calibration errors for both radars. In this paper, R( A) rain estimates are compared to R( Z) and R( KDP) retrievals using specific phase shift KDP. PBB and calibration corrections derived in Part I made the R( Z) rainfall estimates almost perfectly consistent. Accumulated over five summer months, rainfall maps showed strong effects of clutter contamination if R( KDP) is used and weaker impact on R( A). These effects could be reduced by processing the phase shift measurements with more resilience toward ground clutter contamination and by substituting problematic R( KDP) or R( A) estimates with R( Z). Hourly and daily accumulations from rain estimators are compared with rain gauge measurements; the results show that R( A) complemented by R( Z) in segments with low total differential phase shift correlates best with gauges and has the lowest bias and RMSE, followed by R( KDP) substituted with R( Z) at rain rates below 8 mm h−1. Summary Accurate precipitation maps are essential for ecological, environmental, element cycle and hydrological models that have a spatial output component. It is well known that topography has a major influence on the spatial distribution of precipitation and that increasing topographical complexity is associated with increased spatial heterogeneity in precipitation. This means that when mapping precipitation using classical interpolation techniques (e.g. regression, kriging, spline, inverse distance weighting, etc.), a climate measuring network with higher spatial density is needed in mountainous areas in order to obtain the same level of accuracy as compared to flatter regions. In this study, we present a mean total annual precipitation mapping technique that combines topographical information (i.e. elevation and slope orientation) with average total annual rain gauge data in order to overcome this problem. A unique feature of this paper is the identification of the scale at which topography influences the precipitation pattern as well as the direction of the dominant weather circulation. This method was applied for Belgium and surroundings and shows that the identification of the appropriate scale at which topographical obstacles impact precipitation is crucial in order to obtain reliable mean total annual precipitation maps. The dominant weather circulation is determined at 260°. Hence, this approach allows accurate mapping of mean annual precipitation patterns in regions characterized by rather high topographical complexity using a climate data network with a relatively low density and/or when more advanced precipitation measurement techniques, such as radar, aren’t available, for example in the case of historical data. The goal of this study is to utilize several recent developments on rainfall data collection, downscaling of available climate models, training and forecasts from such models within the framework of a multimodel superensemble, and first a detailed examination of the seasonal climatology. The unique aspect of this study is that it became possible to use the forecast results from as many as 16 state-of-the-art coupled climate models. A downscaling component, with respect to observed rainfall estimates, uses a very dense Asian rain gauge network. This feature enables the forecasts of each model to be bias corrected to a common 25-km resolution. The downscaling statistics for each model, at each grid location, are developed during a training phase of the model forecasts. This is done wherever the observed rainfall estimates are available. In the 'forecast phase,' the forecasts from all of the member models use the downscaling coefficients of the 'training phase.' The downscaling and the extraction of the superensemble weights are done during the training phase. This makes use of the cross-validation principle. This means that the season to be forecasted is left out of the entire forecast dataset. Thus all of the statistics for downscaling and the superensemble construction are done separately for the forecasts of each season for all the years. The forecast phase is the season that is being forecast, where the aforementioned statistics are deployed for constructing the final downscaled superensemble. These forecasts are next used for the construction of a multimodel superensemble. The geographical distributions of the downscaling coefficients provide a first look at the systematic errors of the member model forecasts. This combination of multimodels, the vast rain gauge dataset, the downscaling, and the superensemble provides a major improvement for the rainfall climatology and anomalies for the forecast phase. One of the main results of this paper is on the improvement of rainfall climatology of the member models. The downscaled multimodel superensemble shows a correlation of nearly 1.0 with respect to the observed climatology. This high skill is important for addressing the rainfall anomaly forecasts, which are defined in terms of departures from the observed (rather than a model based) climatology. This first part of the paper provides a description of the member models, the length of the training and forecast phases, the sensitivity of results as the numbers of forecast models are increased, and the skills of the downscaled climatology forecasts. Abstract: The WMO Field Intercomparison of Rainfall Intensity (RI) Gauges started on October, 1st 2007 at Vigna di Valle (Italy) and was concluded in May 2009. Those catching type instruments, out of the selected rain gauges based on various measuring principles, and the four rain gauges selected as reference instruments to be installed in a pit, were preliminarily calibrated in the laboratory before their final installation at the Field Intercomparison site. The recognized WMO laboratory at the University of Genoa was involved in this task, using the same standard tests adopted for the previously held WMO Laboratory Intercomparison of RI gauges. Further tests were performed to investigate the one-minute performance of the involved instruments. The present paper deals with basically Tipping-Bucket Rain gauges (TBRs) and Weighing Gauges (WGs), using results from tests performed under constant flow rates in laboratory conditions. The objective of this initial phase of the Intercomparison was to single out the counting errors associated with each instrument, so as to help the understanding of the measured differences between instruments in the field during the second phase. Results and comments on the preliminary laboratory calibration exercise are reported in this paper together with their implications for the analysis of the outcome of the Intercomparison in the Field. This paper evaluates the seasonal (winter, premonsoon, monsoon, and postmonsoon) performance of seven precipitation products from three different sources: gridded station data, satellite-derived data, and reanalyses products over the Indian subcontinent for a period of 10 years (1997/98-2006/07). The evaluated precipitation products are the Asian Precipitation-Highly-Resolved Observational Data Integration Towards Evaluation of the Water Resources (APHRODITE), the Climate Prediction Center unified (CPC-uni), the Global Precipitation Climatology Project (GPCP), the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) post-real-time research products (3B42-V6 and 3B42-V7), the Climate Forecast System Reanalysis (CFSR), and the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) interim reanalysis (ERA-Interim). Several verification measures are employed to assess the accuracy of the data. All datasets capture the large-scale characteristics of the seasonal mean precipitation distribution, albeit with pronounced seasonal and/or regional differences. Compared to APHRODITE, the gauge-only (CPC-uni) and the satellite-derived precipitation products (GPCP, 3B42-V6, and 3B42-V7) capture the summer monsoon rainfall variability better than CFSR and ERA-Interim. Similar conclusions are drawn for the postmonsoon season, with the exception of 3B42-V7, which underestimates postmonsoon precipitation. Over mountainous regions, 3B42-V7 shows an appreciable improvement over 3B42-V6 and other gauge-based precipitation products. Significantly large biases/errors occur during the winter months, which are likely related to the uncertainty in observations that artificially inflate the existing error in reanalyses and satellite retrievals. Abstract: This paper considers a class of stochastic point process models, based on doubly stochastic Poisson processes, in the modelling of rainfall. We examine the application of this class of models, a neglected alternative to the widely-known Poisson cluster models, in the analysis of fine time-scale rainfall intensity. These models are mainly used to analyse tipping-bucket raingauge data from a single site but an extension to multiple sites is illustrated which reveals the potential of this class of models to study the temporal and spatial variability of precipitation at fine time-scales. Abstract: The availability of precipitation data with high spatial resolution is of fundamental importance in several applications such as hydrology, meteorology and ecology. At present, there are mainly two sources of precipitation estimates: raingauge stations and remote sensing technology. However, a large number of studies demonstrated that traditional point measurements based on raingauge stations cannot reflect the spatial variation of precipitation effectively, especially in ungauged basins. The technology of remote sensing has greatly improved the quality of precipitation observations and produced reasonably high resolution gridded precipitation fields. These products, derived from satellites, have been widely used in various parts of the world. However, when applied to local basins and regions, the spatial resolution of these products is too coarse. In this paper, we present a statistical downscaling algorithm based on the relationships between precipitation and other environmental factors in the Qaidam Basin such as topography and vegetation, which was developed for downscaling the spatial precipitation fields of these remote sensing products. This algorithm is demonstrated with the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) 3B43 dataset, the Digital Elevation Model (DEM) from the Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM) and SPOT VEGETATION. The statistical relationship among precipitation, DEM and Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), which is a proxy for vegetation, is variable at different scales; therefore, a multiple linear regression model was established under four different scales (0.25°, 0.50°, 0.75° and 1.00°, respectively). By applying a downscaling methodology, TRMM 3B43 0.25°×0.25° precipitation fields were downscaled to 1×1km pixel precipitation for each year from 1999 to 2009. On the basis of three criteria, these four downscaled results were compared with each other and the regression model established at the resolution of 0.50° was selected as the final downscaling algorithm in this study. The final downscaled results were validated by applying the observations for a duration of 11years obtained from six raingauge stations in the Qaidam Basin. These results indicated that the downscaled result effectively captured the trends in inter-annual variability and the magnitude of annual precipitation with the coefficient of determination r 2 ranging from 0.72 to 0.96 at six different raingauge stations. This paper presents methodologies for mitigating temporally inconsistent biases in National Weather Service (NWS) real-time multisensor quantitative precipitation estimates (MQPEs) through rain gauge--based readjustments, and examines their effects on streamflow simulations. In this study, archived MQPEs over 1997--2006 for the Middle Atlantic River Forecast Center (MARFC) area of responsibility were readjusted at monthly and daily scales using two gridded gauge products. The original and readjusted MQPEs were applied as forcing to the NWS Distributed Hydrologic Model for 12 catchments in the domain of MARFC. The resultant hourly streamflow simulations were compared for two subperiods divided along November 2003, when a software error that gave rise to a low bias in MQPEs was fixed. It was found that readjustment at either time scale improved the consistency in the bias in streamflow simulations. For the earlier period, independent monthly and daily readjustments considerably improved the streamflow simulations for most basins as judged by bias and correlation. By contrast, for the later period the effects were mixed across basins. It was also found that 1) readjustments tended to be more effective in the cool rather than warm season, 2) refining the readjustment resolution to daily had mixed effects on streamflow simulations, and 3) at the daily scale, redistributing gauge rainfall is beneficial for periods with substantial missing MQPEs. Convective precipitation is the main cause of extreme rainfall events in small areas. Its primary characteristics are both large spatial and temporal variability. For this reason, the monitoring of accumulated precipitation fields (liquid and solid components) at the surface is difficult to carry out through the use of rain gauge networks or remote sensing observations. Alternatively, numerical models may be a useful tool to simulate convective precipitation for various analyses and predictions. This paper focuses on improving quantitative convective precipitation estimates that are obtained with a cloud-resolving model. This aim is attained by using the appropriate cloud drop size distribution and modified single sounding data. The authors perform comparisons between observations and three model samples of the areal-accumulated convective precipitation for a 15-yr period over mountainous and flat land areas with 45 and 29 convective events, respectively. They compare the results from a numerical cloud model that uses 2 different microphysical schemes--the unified Khrgian--Mazin size distribution of cloud drops--and an alternative scheme that is a combination of a monodispersed cloud droplet spectrum and the Marshall--Palmer size distribution for raindrops. The authors'' statistical analysis shows that the model version with the Khrgian--Mazin size distribution and the new initial conditions better simulates the observed areal-accumulated convective precipitation than the alternative microphysical approach for both study areas. The model simulations with the Khrgian--Mazin size distribution most closely match observations for the flat land area with a correlation coefficient of 0.94, while it is somewhat lower (0.89) for the mountainous area. Use of the alternative microphysical approach, on the other hand, underestimates the observed precipitation, and has the lowest correlation coefficient among the methods, 0.82 for the mountainous area and 0.85 for the flat land. Temporally consistent high-quality, high-resolution multisensor precipitation reanalysis (MPR) products are needed for a wide range of quantitative climatological and hydroclimatological applications. Therefore, the authors have reengineered the multisensor precipitation estimator (MPE) algorithms of the NWS into the MPR package. Owing to the retrospective nature of the analysis, MPR allows for the utilization of additional rain gauge data, more rigorous automatic quality control, and post factum correction of radar quantitative precipitation estimation (QPE) and optimization of key parameters in multisensor estimation. To evaluate and demonstrate the value of MPR, the authors designed and carried out a set of cross-validation experiments in the pilot domain of North Carolina and South Carolina. The rain gauge data are from the reprocessed Hydrometeorological Automated Data System (HADS) and the daily Cooperative Observer Program (COOP). The radar QPE data are the operationally produced Weather Surveillance Radar-1988 Doppler digital precipitation array (DPA) products. To screen out bad rain gauge data, quality control steps were taken that use rain gauge and radar data. The resulting MPR products are compared with the stage IV product on a daily scale at the withheld COOP gauge locations. Abstract: This review paper deals with four aspects of precipitation: measurement, remote sensing, climatology and modeling. The measurement of precipitation is summarized in terms of the instruments that count and measure drop sizes (defined as disdrometers) and the instruments that measure an average quantity proportional to the integrated volume of an ensemble of raindrops (these instruments are normally called rain gauges). Remote sensing of precipitation is accomplished with ground based radar and from satellite retrievals and these two approaches are separately discussed. The climatology of precipitation has evolved through the years from the traditional rain gauge data analyses to the more sophisticated data bases that result from a coalescence of data and information on precipitation that is available from several sources into amalgamated products. Recently, rain observations from both ground and space have been assimilated into regional and global numerical weather prediction models aiming at improved moisture analysis and better forecasts of extreme weather events. The current status and the main outstanding issues related to precipitation forecasting are discussed, providing a basic structure for research coordination aimed at the improvement of modeling, observation and data assimilation applicable to global and regional scales. The recent intensification of extreme rainfall events has the potential to aggravate the frequency and intensity of floods in urban areas and signals the urgent need for accurate and high spatiotemporal resolution precipitation data for flood monitoring and warning to alleviate the associated damages. In this context, this paper aims to statistically assess the latest Integrated Multisatellite Retrievals from Global Precipitation Measurement (IMERG) multisatellite constellation and radar quantitative precipitation estimation (QPE) products against dense rain gauge network observations under multiple temporal scales (hourly and 3-hourly) and three spatial scales (grid cumulative, regional, and grid) over the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA) in China. The results indicate that (1) at the grid cumulative scale, QPE significantly outperforms IMERG products. The correlation coefficients of QPE (0.83 ≤ CORR ≤ 0.85) are much higher than those of IMERG products (0.35 ≤ CORR ≤ 0.56), the estimation of QPE is generally significantly underestimated (−0.23 ≤ BIAS ≤ -0.16), and the BIAS of IMERG products is larger than that of QPE (−0.24 ≤ BIAS ≤ 0.23). (2) At the regional scale, the accuracy of IMERG products has been significantly improved, with relatively high correlation coefficients (CORR≥0.8) and decreased root mean squared error (RMSE) values (1.18 mm ≤ RMSE ≤ 0.22 mm), and Taylor diagrams visually show that QPE is closer to the gauge observations than are IMERG products. (3) The evaluation results at the grid scale show that both IMERG products and QPE can accurately reflect the spatial distribution of precipitation. Among these results, the spatial distribution of QPE is the most consistent with the actual rainfall, although an obvious underestimation of rainfall occurs in areas with strong rainfall. (4) In terms of detection indicators, the three IMERG products are superior to QPE at capturing rainfall events and have more advantages over QPE in the estimation of instantaneous precipitation, especially for light rain events. However, QPE has better detection effects for rainfall events under rainstorm and heavy rainstorm events, indicating the hydrologic utility of this product. Among the three IMERG products, the IMERG Early Run (ER) product has the advantages of a short lag time and high accuracy, and it has the potential to be applied in flood forecasting. Near real-time precipitation is essential to many applications. In Africa, the lack of dense rain-gauge networks and ground weather radars makes the use of satellite precipitation products unavoidable. Despite major progresses in estimating precipitation rate from remote sensing measurements over the past decades, satellite precipitation products still suffer from quantitative uncertainties and biases compared to ground data. Consequently, almost all precipitation products are provided in two modes: a real-time mode (also called early-run or raw product) and a corrected mode (also called final-run, adjusted or post-processed product) in which ground precipitation measurements are integrated in algorithms to correct for bias, generally at a monthly timescale. This paper describes a new methodology to provide a near-real-time precipitation product based on satellite precipitation and soil moisture measurements. Recent studies have shown that soil moisture intrinsically contains information on past precipitation and can be used to correct precipitation uncertainties. The PrISM (Precipitation inferred from Soil Moisture) methodology is presented and its performance is assessed for five in situ rainfall measurement networks located in Africa in semi-arid to wet areas: Niger, Benin, Burkina Faso, Central Africa, and East Africa. Results show that the use of SMOS (Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity) satellite soil moisture measurements in the PrISM algorithm most often improves the real-time satellite precipitation products, and provides results comparable to existing adjusted products, such as TRMM (Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission), GPCC (Global Precipitation Climatology Centre) and IMERG (Integrated Multi-satellitE Retrievals for GPM), which are available a few weeks or months after their detection. This paper evaluates Integrated Multi-Satellite Retrievals from GPM (IMERG-F) over Europe for the period 2014–2018 in order to evaluate application of the retrievals to hydrology. IMERG-F is compared with a large pan-European precipitation dataset built on rain gauge stations, i.e., the ENSEMBLES OBServation (E-OBS) gridded dataset. Although there is overall agreement in the spatial distribution of mean precipitation (R2 = 0.8), important discrepancies are revealed in mountainous regions, specifically the Alps, Pyrenees, west coast of the British Isles, Scandinavia, the Iberian and Italian peninsulas, and the Adriatic coastline. The results show that the strongest contributors to poor performance are pixels where IMERG-F has no gauges available for adjustment. If rain gauges are available, IMERG-F yields results similar to those of the surface observations, although the performance varies by region. However, even accounting for gauge adjustment, IMERG-F systematically underestimates precipitation in the Alps and Scandinavian mountains. Conversely, IMERG-F overestimates precipitation in the British Isles, Italian Peninsula, Adriatic coastline, and eastern European plains. Additionally, the research shows that gauge adjustment worsens the spatial gradient of precipitation because of the coarse resolution of Global Precipitation Climatology Centre data. The processes of isotope fractionation in the hydrological cycle naturally occur during vapor formation, vapor condensation, and moisture transportation. These processes are therefore dependent on local and regional surface and atmospheric physical features such as temperature, pressure, wind speed, and land morphology, and hence on the climate. Because of the strong influence of climate on the isotope fractionation, latitudinal and altitudinal effects on the δ18O and δ2H values of precipitation at a global scale are observed. In this study, we present and compare the processes governing precipitation isotope fractionation from two contrasting climatic regions: Virunga in Central-Eastern Africa and the Central Mediterranean (Stromboli and Sicily, Italy). While Virunga is a forested rainy tropical region located between Central and Eastern Africa, the Mediterranean region is characterized by a rainy mild winter and a dry hot summer. The reported δ18O and δ2H dataset are from precipitation collected on rain gauges sampled either on a monthly or an approximately bimonthly basis and published in previous papers. Both regions show clearly defined temporal and altitudinal variations of δ18O and δ2H, depending on precipitation amounts. The Central Mediterranean shows a clear contribution of local vapor forming at the sea–air interface, and Virunga shows a contribution from both local and regional vapor. The vapor of Virunga is from two competing sources: the first is the continental recycled moisture from soil/plant evaporation that dominates during the rainy season, and the second is from the East African Great Lakes evaporation that dominates during the dry season. In the French Alps the quality of the radar Quantitative Precipitation Estimation (QPE) is limited by the topography and the vertical structure of precipitation. A previous study realized in all the French Alps, has shown a general bias between values of the national radar QPE composite and the rain gauge measurements: a radar QPE over-estimation at low altitude (+20% at 200 m a.s.l.), and an increasing underestimation at high altitudes (until −40% at 2100 m a.s.l.). This trend has been linked to altitudinal gradients of precipitation observed at ground level. This paper analyzes relative altitudinal gradients of precipitation estimated with rain gauges measurements in 2016 for three massifs around Grenoble, and for different temporal accumulations (yearly, seasonal, monthly, daily). Comparisons of radar and rain gauge accumulations confirm the bias previously observed. The parts of the current radar data processing affecting the bias value are pointed out. The analysis shows a coherency between the relative gradient values estimated at the different temporal accumulations. Vertical profiles of precipitation detected by a research radar installed at the bottom of the valley also show how the wide horizontal variability of precipitation inside the valley can affect the gradient estimation.
