The 16 years of normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) and precipitation data are used to analyze the time‐lag effects of the growing‐season NDVI response to precipitation at regional scales. This study focuses on the arid and semi‐arid Hulunbuir grassland dominated by perennials in northeast China. The multi‐month time‐lag effects are examined using simple statistical approaches, which can detect the two distinct time‐lags for four subregions with four major land‐cover types. A "positive" time‐lag effect of the growing‐season NDVI response to precipitation is observed at 1‐month (May in the current year) time‐lag and 13‐month (May in the previous year) time‐lag while a "negative" time‐lag effect is observed at 9‐month (September in the previous year) time‐lag. In addition, the prediction results of NDVI based on precipitation indicate that the NDVI prediction model considered the lagged monthly precipitation has good performance. Therefore, revealing the time‐lag effects is very important for accurately predicting the growing‐season NDVI and evaluating the vegetation dynamics. Recommendations for Resource Managers: The multi‐month time‐lag effects of the growing‐season NDVI to precipitation in arid and semi‐arid grasslands in northeastern China is analyzed in this paper. Restoration of natural vegetation in arid and semi‐arid grasslands is facing severe challenges. The vegetation is easy to lose their vitality, resulting in the loss of the cover in natural grasslands under the high grazing pressure. To address this situation, this paper proposes a novel method for accurately predicting the grazing pressure using the nonlinear autoregressive with exogenous input (NARX) network based on the remote sensing data of normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) and precipitation. The proposed method uses the NARX networks to predict the temporal variations of the NDVI with respect to the precipitation. The grazing pressure can be thus calculated using the predicted values of the NDVI. For practical application, this study investigated an arid and semi‐arid grassland with heavy grazing pressure in Hulunbuir, China. The results demonstrate that the proposed method can provide an accurate prediction of the grazing pressure (mean absolute error 0.103, root‐mean‐square error 0.122, mean absolute percentage error 8.36% and coefficient of determination 0.899 at the confidence interval of 95%). In addition, the predicted values of the grazing pressure in the study area during the years from 2016 to 2020 can be obtained using the proposed method. The proposed method can obtain a good prediction of the grazing pressure, which can be further used as a guidance for the rangeland managers to reduce the occurrence of the overgrazing. Global climate change is considered one of the greatest environmental threats in the world. It is expected to significantly change the global hydrological cycle. The two main water cycle components, potential evapotranspiration (PET) and precipitation (P), are closely related to vegetation dynamics. In this study, the partial correlation analysis method was used to analyzed the relationship between Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) and climate factors (PET and P) based on grid cells. PET was calculated by FAO-56 Penman-Monteith method. Moreover, we also investigated the NDVI and climate factors in different vegetation cover types. The results showed that grassland, forest and cropland in China were positively correlated with PET and P. The time scales of the maximum partial correlation coefficients between NDVI and PET of grassland vegetation were mostly longer than 5-6 months. These time scales were longer than the time scales related to P. The partial correlation coefficients between NDVI and PET, P of forest vegetation were higher in northern China, whereas the spatial distribution of related time scales was the opposite. The partial correlation coefficients between NDVI and PET, P of forest vegetation were higher in northern China. However, the spatial distribution of related time scales was the opposite. The correlations between NDVI and PET, P of cropland vegetation and the time scales related to PET had clear spatial heterogeneity. The time scale of the correlation between NDVI and P for cropland in the northern China was about 2 months. P had a strong influence on the growth of various types of vegetation in the study area, and grassland vegetation was affected by P over the shortest time scale. We compare and analyze the results of this study with other related studies. Drought monitoring ensures the Yangtze River Basin's social economy and agricultural production. Developing a comprehensive index with high monitoring precision is essential to enhance the accuracy of drought management strategies. This study proposes the standardized comprehensive drought index (SCDI) using a novel approach that utilizes the joint distribution of C-vine copula to effectively combine three critical drought factors: precipitation, NDVI, and runoff. The study analyzes the reliability and effectiveness of the SCDI in detecting drought events through quantitative indicators and assesses its applicability in the Yangtze River Basin. The findings are as follows: (1) The SCDI is a highly reliable and applicable drought index. Compared to traditional indices like the SPI, VCI, and SRI, it has a consistency rate of over 67% and can detect drought events in more sensitive months by over 51%. It has a low false negative rate of only 2% and a false positive rate of 0%, making it highly accurate. The SCDI is also applicable to all the third-level sub-basins of the Yangtze River Basin, making it a valuable tool for regional drought monitoring. (2) The time lag effect of the NDVI can affect the sensitivity of the SCDI. When the NDVI time series data are shifted forward by one month, the sensitivity of the SCDI in detecting agricultural drought improves from 47.8% to 53%. (3) The SDCI can assist in monitoring drought patterns in the Yangtze River Basin. From 2001 to 2018, the basin saw fluctuations in drought intensity, with the worst in December 2008. Based on monthly precipitation (P), temperature (T) data, and remote sensing images collected from March 2000 to February 2019, this article was constructed to reveal the synergistic effect between P and T for the NDVI in northern China qualitatively and quantitatively by using a one-variable linear regression, the coefficient of variation, multivariate correlation coefficients, and a geodetector. The results show that the NDVI in the study area decreased from 2000 to 2012, increased from 2013 to 2018, decreased in the west, and increased in the east of Northern China. Overall, the NDVI, P, and the average maximum temperature (Tmax) had the strongest multivariate correlations (approximately 43.4% of the total study area passed the 95% confidence level significance test), followed by the average temperature (Tave) and average minimum temperature (Tmin). The explanatory power of the synergistic effect between P and Tmax for the NDVI was the strongest, with the value of explanatory power varying from 0.41 to 0.81, followed by Tave and Tmin. Spatially, the explanatory power of the synergistic effect between P and T for the NDVI was strengthened overall in the study area from northwest to southeast. The annual change rate of the explanatory power showed that the overall explanatory power between P and T for the NDVI in the study area was weakened in the central area and strengthened in the east and the west. Specifically, the synergistic effect between P and T on the NDVI was weakened in both Shaanxi and Ningxia Huizu Zizhiqu, while the opposite occurred in Xinjiang Uygul Zizhiqu, Qinghai, and another five provinces in the eastern part of the study area. The latest research indicates that there are time-lag effects between the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) and the precipitation variation. It is well known that the time-lags are different from region to region, and there are time-lags for the NDVI itself correlated to the precipitation. In the arid and semi-arid grasslands, the annual NDVI has proved not only to be highly dependent on the precipitation of the concurrent year and previous years, but also the NDVI of previous years. This paper proposes a method using recurrent neural network (RNN) to capture both time-lags of the NDVI with respect to the NDVI itself, and of the NDVI with respect to precipitation. To quantitatively capture these time-lags, 16 years of the NDVI and precipitation data are used to construct the prediction model of the NDVI with respect to precipitation. This study focuses on the arid and semi-arid Hulunbuir grasslands dominated by perennials in northeast China. Using RNN, the time-lag effects are captured at a 1 year time-lag of precipitation and a 2 year time-lag of the NDVI. Interactions between precipitation, vegetation, and erosion are crucial and not fully solved issues in the area of earth surface processes. The Qingshui River Basin (QRB), as the main sediment source tributary of the upper reaches of the Yellow River, is characterized by spatial heterogeneity of rainfall, vegetation, and soil erosion. In this study, we investigated the spatiotemporal variations of sediment yields within the QRB and further identified the coupling effects of precipitation and vegetation on soil erosion. We collected annual (1955 to 2016) and daily (2006 to 2016) hydrological and sediment series from six hydrological stations, which subdivided the whole basin into six different sub-basins with heterogeneity in climate and landscape. Variations in parameter a of the sediment rating curves among the six sub-basins continuously declined, showing the continuously increasing effect of vegetation coverage on reducing soil erosion. The unique combination of relationships between precipitation characteristics and vegetation patterns in six sub-basins and these coupling effects resulted in different precipitation–vegetation–erosion patterns in six sub-basins. Sediment yield followed bell-shaped relationships with vegetation and precipitation, with a clear critical threshold at normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) = 0.36/precipitation = 100 mm at a monthly scale. Based on these thresholds, the non-linear relationships between precipitation, vegetation, and erosion were also explained. We also found that reducing the time lags in which vegetation follows precipitation may be effective in suppressing sediment yield. These findings could provide a quantitative approach to estimating the potential changes in sediment yield associated with proposed ecological rehabilitation schemes in this region. Abstract: The availability of precipitation data with high spatial resolution is of fundamental importance in several applications such as hydrology, meteorology and ecology. At present, there are mainly two sources of precipitation estimates: raingauge stations and remote sensing technology. However, a large number of studies demonstrated that traditional point measurements based on raingauge stations cannot reflect the spatial variation of precipitation effectively, especially in ungauged basins. The technology of remote sensing has greatly improved the quality of precipitation observations and produced reasonably high resolution gridded precipitation fields. These products, derived from satellites, have been widely used in various parts of the world. However, when applied to local basins and regions, the spatial resolution of these products is too coarse. In this paper, we present a statistical downscaling algorithm based on the relationships between precipitation and other environmental factors in the Qaidam Basin such as topography and vegetation, which was developed for downscaling the spatial precipitation fields of these remote sensing products. This algorithm is demonstrated with the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) 3B43 dataset, the Digital Elevation Model (DEM) from the Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM) and SPOT VEGETATION. The statistical relationship among precipitation, DEM and Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), which is a proxy for vegetation, is variable at different scales; therefore, a multiple linear regression model was established under four different scales (0.25°, 0.50°, 0.75° and 1.00°, respectively). By applying a downscaling methodology, TRMM 3B43 0.25°×0.25° precipitation fields were downscaled to 1×1km pixel precipitation for each year from 1999 to 2009. On the basis of three criteria, these four downscaled results were compared with each other and the regression model established at the resolution of 0.50° was selected as the final downscaling algorithm in this study. The final downscaled results were validated by applying the observations for a duration of 11years obtained from six raingauge stations in the Qaidam Basin. These results indicated that the downscaled result effectively captured the trends in inter-annual variability and the magnitude of annual precipitation with the coefficient of determination r 2 ranging from 0.72 to 0.96 at six different raingauge stations. Abstract: As an index denoting vegetation cover, NDVI is influenced by many climatic factors such as precipitation and average temperature. In this paper, NDVI is calculated on the basis of waveband characteristic of NOAA/AVHRR data for the YarlungZangbo River Basin. Then, the spatial-temporal change of NDVI is analyzed. The basin''s NDVI is in consistency with season from 2001 to 2003.Large value zone of NDVI is mainly distributed in the lower reaches and part of the middle reaches. Meanwhile, point-data of principal climatic factors are interpolated to spatial grid data with Kriging method consistent with NDVI based on DEM of the YarlungZangbo River Basin. Then, the relation of NDVI and precipitation or average air temperature is analyzed with F checking and two-sample variance test in the basin. The result is P=0, which shows that correlation analysis has larger confidence. The linear and logarithmic correlation of NDVI and precipitation or average air temperature is analyzed at confidence level of 0.05.The conclusion is that NDVI and precipitation and average air temperature in the basin vary with seasons and are closely correlated. The linear correlation coefficient of NDVI and precipitation is 0.8, and that of NDVI and average air temperature is about 0.77.And the logarithmic correlation coefficient of NDVI and precipitation is 0.71, and that of NDVI and average air temperature is 0.7. Qinling Mountains is the north–south boundary of China's geography; the vegetation changes are of great significance to the survival of wildlife and the protection of species habitats. Based on Landsat products in the Google Earth Engine (GEE) platform, Pearson's correlation coefficient method, and classification and regression models, this study analyzed the changes in NDVI (Normalized Difference Vegetation Index) in the Qinling Mountains in the past 38 years and the sensitivity of its driving factors. Finally, residual analysis method and accumulate slope change rate are used to identify the impact of human activities and climate change on NDVI. The research results show the following: (1) The NDVI value in most areas of Qinling Mountains is at a medium-to-high level, and 99.76% of the areas correspond to an increasing trend of NDVI, and the significantly increased area accounts for more than 20%. (2) From 1981 to 2019, the NDVI of the Qinling Mountains increased from 0.63 to 0.78, showing an overall upward trend, and it increased significantly after 2006. (3) Sensitivity analysis results show that the western high-altitude area of Qinling Mountain area dominated by grassland is mainly affected by precipitation. The central and southeastern parts of the Qinling Mountains are significantly affected by temperature, and they are mainly distributed in areas dominated by forest. (4) The contribution rates of climate change and human activities to NDVI are 36.04% and 63.96%, respectively. Among them, the positive impact of human activities on the NDVI of the Qinling Mountains accounted for 99.85% of the area. The area with significant positive effect accounted for 36.49%. In recent decades, strong human activities have not only brought about climate change including both global warming and shifts in the weather patterns but have also caused anomalous variations of hydrological elements in different basins all around the world. Studying the mechanisms and causes of these hydrological variations scientifically is the basis for the management of water resources and the implementation of ecological protection. Therefore, taking the Yongding River mountain area as a representative watershed in China, the changes of different observed and simulated hydro-meteorological variables and their possible causes are analyzed on an inter-annual scale based on ground based observations and remotely sensed data of hydrology, meteorology and underlying surface characteristics from 1956 to 2016. The results show that the annual natural runoff of Guanting hydrological station in the main stream of the Yongding River, Cetian hydrological station and Xiangshuibao hydrological station in the tributary of the Yongding River all have a significant decreasing trend and abrupt changes, and all the abrupt change points of the annual natural runoff series of the three hydrological stations appear in the early 1980s. On the inter-annual scale, the water balance model with double parameters is unable to effectively simulate the natural surface runoff after the abrupt change points. The annual average precipitation after the abrupt change points decreases by no more than 10%, compared with that before the abrupt change points. However, the precipitation from July to August, which is the main runoff-production period, decreases by more than 25%, besides the intra-annual temporal distribution of precipitation becoming uniform and a significant decrease in effective rainfall, which is the source of the runoff. Meanwhile, the NDVI in the basin show an increasing trend, while the groundwater level and land water storage decrease significantly. These factors do not lead only to the continuous reduction of the annual natural runoff in the Yongding River mountain area from 1956 to 2016, but also result in significant changes of the hydro-meteorological relationship in the basin. Vegetation fluctuation is sensitive to climate change, and this response exhibits a time lag. Traditionally, scholars estimated this lag effect by considering the immediate prior lag (e.g., where vegetation in the current month is impacted by the climate in a certain prior month) or the lag accumulation (e.g., where vegetation in the current month is impacted by the last several months). The essence of these two methods is that vegetation growth is impacted by climate conditions in the prior period or several consecutive previous periods, which fails to consider the different impacts coming from each of those prior periods. Therefore, this study proposed a new approach, the weighted time-lag method, in detecting the lag effect of climate conditions coming from different prior periods. Essentially, the new method is a generalized extension of the lag-accumulation method. However, the new method detects how many prior periods need to be considered and, most importantly, the differentiated climate impact on vegetation growth in each of the determined prior periods. We tested the performance of the new method in the Loess Plateau by comparing various lag detection methods by using the linear model between the climate factors and the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI). The case study confirmed four main findings: (1) the response of vegetation growth exhibits time lag to both precipitation and temperature; (2) there are apparent differences in the time lag effect detected by various methods, but the weighted time-lag method produced the highest determination coefficient (R2) in the linear model and provided the most specific lag pattern over the determined prior periods; (3) the vegetation growth is most sensitive to climate factors in the current month and the last month in the Loess Plateau but reflects a varied of responses to other prior months; and (4) the impact of temperature on vegetation growth is higher than that of precipitation. The new method provides a much more precise detection of the lag effect of climate change on vegetation growth and makes a smart decision about soil conservation and ecological restoration after severe climate events, such as long-lasting drought or flooding.
