Cristobalite‐type boron phosphate BPO4, an important nonlinear‐optical (NLO) crystal, exhibits nearly the largest bandgap (Eg ≈ 9.3 eV) and a significant second‐harmonic‐generation (SHG) effect (d36 ≈ 0.7 pm V−1) in the deep‐ultraviolet (DUV, < 200 nm) spectral region. However, its conventional tetrahedral framework structure tends to have low structural anisotropy, resulting in a severe deficiency of birefringence (Δn < 0.01), which fails to achieve DUV birefringent phase matching. In this work, the local anisotropy of tetrahedral structures are proposed to enlarge by constructing van der Waals (vdW) anisotropic motifs under synthetic chemical conditions, which can effectively convert unattainable extreme external forces into internal stresses in chemical bond structures. Depending on unique hierarchical vdW assemblies, enormous tetrahedral distortions can be achieved by stable in‐plane or in‐line bond matching between rigid tetrahedral primitives. First‐principles calculations demonstrate that the birefringence of 2D layered and 1D chained BPO4 achieved by vdW engineering are scaled from Δn < 0.01 to 0.07–0.13, with the shortest birefringent phase‐matched wavelengths down to DUV 189–154 nm. The finding is of seminal importance for the design of vdW NLO crystals in structural chemistry and would provide opportunities to explore unique vdW DUV NLO materials under extreme synthetic conditions. Nitride wide-bandgap semiconductors possess a wide tunable energy bandgap and abundant coordination anionic groups. This suggests their potential to display nonlinear optical (NLO) properties in the UV wavelength spectrum. This paper reports recent progress and material discoveries in exploring UV NLO structures using nitrides. The study emphasizes their underlying structure–property correlations in order to provide a summary of the potential performance and application value of important nitride NLO crystals. Additionally, the text underscores the benefits of nitrides in terms of optical transparency, second-harmonic-generation effects, and the birefringent phase matching output wavelength limits, while addressing current issues in terms of theoretical outlook and experimental exploration. Deep‐ultraviolet (DUV) nonlinear optical (NLO) crystals are vital to the development of science and state‐of‐the‐art technologies, but the exploration of these important optoelectronic materials is hindered by the contradiction between NLO effect and energy band gap as well as the sensitivity of DUV phase‐matching to optical birefringence. Here, in order to achieve a well balanced DUV NLO performance, we chose the diamond‐like structure as the prototype template for the material design and synthesized the first DUV NLO hydroxycarbonate crystal, LiZn(OH)CO3. This compound simultaneously has a wide band gap (>6.53 eV), a strong second harmonic generation response (ca. 3.2×KDP), and a large birefringence (0.147 at 1064 nm) with the shortest DUV phase‐matching capability (λPM<190 nm) among all reported NLO carbonates. Moreover, the structure–property relationships in LiZn(OH)CO3 are analyzed by first‐principles calculations. Ultraviolet (UV) transparency, second harmonic effect and optical birefringence are three vital but mutually restrictive factors in the application of UV nonlinear optical (NLO) materials. It is difficult for traditional phosphates to achieve a good balance among these factors. In this communication, we propose that the structural evolution of the NLO motif from traditional phosphate to oxythiophosphate would enhance the birefringence and second harmonic generation (SHG) effect while maintaining wide UV transparency, which is confirmed by first‐principles calculations and preliminary experimental measurements. Following this strategy, we predict that, compared with the well‐known NLO phosphate KH2PO4, the oxythiophosphate KH2PO3S exhibits better balance for the UV NLO performance, including wide UV transparency (UV cutoff down to 203 nm), strong SHG effect (ca. 0.9 pm V−1), and large birefringence (ca. 0.1 at 1 μm) with short phase‐matching SHG output wavelength (≈214 nm). Abstract: KBe2BO3F2 (KBBF) is still the only practically usable crystal that can generate deep‐ultraviolet (DUV) coherent light by direct second harmonic generation (SHG). However, applications are hindered by layering, leading to difficulty in the growth of thick crystals and compromised mechanical integrity. Despite efforts, it is still a great challenge to discover new nonlinear optical (NLO) materials that overcome the layering while keeping the DUV SHG available. Now, two new DUV NLO beryllium borates have been successfully designed and synthesized, NH4Be2BO3F2 (ABBF) and γ‐Be2BO3F (γ‐BBF), which not only overcome the layering but also can be used as next‐generation DUV NLO materials with the shortest type I phase‐matching second‐harmonic wavelength down to 173.9 nm and 146 nm, respectively. Metal sulfides with diamond-like (DL) structures are systematically investigated in this study for nonlinear optical (NLO) applications in the mid-infrared (mid-IR) spectral region. All the selected materials are characterized by a 3D framework connected by various sulfide tetrahedral units, such as [PS 4 ], [SiS 4 ], [GeS 4 ], [GaS 4 ], [InS 4 ], [CdS 4 ], [ZnS 4 ], [LiS 4 ], and [AgS 4 ]. The linear and nonlinear optical properties of these materials are analyzed on the basis of first-principles calculations. It is concluded that it is relatively easy to achieve good balance between the bandgap and the NLO effect. Additionally, moderate birefringence Δn (∼0.03–0.10) is required for practical mid-IR NLO applications. In particular, several metal sulfides with normal DL and defect DL structures, exhibiting superior mid-IR NLO properties, are highlighted. A new ternary selenostannate Ba6Sn6Se13 has been synthesized by a high temperature solid-state method. The compound crystallizes in the non-centrosymmetric orthorhombic space group P212121 and may be represented as Ba6Sn52+Sn4+Se13 with mixed valence Sn atoms. Sn4+ cations lie in a tetrahedral environment, while Sn2+ cations are found in two kinds of coordination environments: the trigonal pyramid and quadrangular pyramid. SnSen (n = 3, 4, 5) polyhedra are further connected to generate a three-dimensional framework with Ba2+ residing in cavities. Ba6Sn6Se13 shows moderate nonlinear optical response and is the first reported NLO compound in the Ba–Sn–Se system. In addition, diffuse reflectance spectroscopy measurement indicates that the band gap of Ba6Sn6Se13 is 1.52(2) eV and thermal analysis suggests that the compound melts incongruently. Abstract: The predictive capabilities of the density functional theory with various exchange–correlation functionals on the energy band gaps and optical properties in ultraviolet nonlinear optical (UV NLO) crystals are systematically investigated. We find that the energy band gaps of these crystals can be accurately predicted by the non-local hybrid functionals and sX-LDA functionals, but their calculated optical properties are not consistent with the experimental results compared to the usually adopted LDA or GGA functionals with the scissors corrections. Accordingly, we propose that a precise and effective strategy to study the optical properties in the UV NLO crystals without any experimental parameter should be the combination of different functional calculations. Commercial infrared (IR) nonlinear optical (NLO) materials are mainly from chalcopyrite‐type AMQ2 (A = Ag, Zn, M = Ga, Ge, Q = S, Se, P) crystals such as AgGaS2 (AGS), AgGaSe2 (AGSe), and ZnGeP2 (ZGP), in which the basic NLO‐active groups are MQ4 tetrahedral units. However, the small anisotropic character of them critical for small birefringence hinders the practical applications in the available IR wavelength range. In this study, a novel strategy for modulating birefringence is proposed using a cation regulation‐driven compressed hypertetrahedral layer approach and a family of AAg2MS4 (A = Na, K, Rb; M = P, As) IR NLO crystals are successfully obtained. Remarkably, the title compounds increase the birefringence to 0.12–0.15, about three times larger than that of AGS (0.04), while they can maintain large bandgaps and strong NLO effects. In addition, they exhibit congruent‐melting properties, beneficial for bulk single crystal growth. The work offers a firsthand access for designing and fabricating high‐performance IR NLO materials. Abstract Infrared (IR) nonlinear optical (NLO) materials are of current interest owing to their technological applications in many military and civil fields. Metal halides are among the most favorable candidates for IR laser frequency conversion owing to their relatively large NLO effects, wide IR transparency and high laser damage thresholds (LDT). However, the comprehensive review for metal halides NLO materials is absent. Herein, we focus on the relationship between the structural features and NLO performances in the reported metal halide NLO materials. In particular, metal halides are classified according to the NLO-active [ MX k ] anionic units and NLO-active cations, i.e. , they are sorted into traditional metal halides containing linear units, triangle pyramidal units, tetrahedral units, rectangular pyramidal units, five-coordinated pseudo-octahedra, six- and more-coordinated polyhedral units, organic-inorganic and supramolecular metal halides. The determination rules of these microscopic structures on NLO properties in metal halides are summarized and analyzed on the basis of the combination of available experimental data and first-principles results.
