Are public officials more responsive to requests from affluent or poor constituents? A growing body of evidence suggests that lawmakers are more responsive to the rich when they craft policy. However, some scholars theorize that officials also exhibit a corresponding bias in favor of the poor when they handle casework, essentially giving policy to the rich and services to the poor. In this paper, we test this casework prediction using four experiments in which confederates sent simple requests to state or local officials. In each, our confederates’ reported social classes were randomly assigned and signaled with a brief introductory statement mentioning the sender’s occupation or economic situation. Across our samples, we find precisely-estimated null effects of social class biases: the officials we studied were equally likely to respond regardless of the constituent’s class. The plant genus Corylus is an economically important crop, valued especially for its nuts. Numerous pathogens and harmful phytophagous arthropods are known to damage hazelnuts. We report on a new eriophyoid mite, Rhyncaphytoptus corylivagrans n. sp., and the first record of Coptophylla lamimani both collected from leaves of American hazelnut (Corylus americana) in North Carolina, USA. Including our new data, the complex of eriophyoids from Corylus comprises 15 species from three families: Phytoptidae (2 spp.), Eriophyidae (11 spp.), and Diptilomiopidae (2 spp.). We obtained sequences of three genes (Cox1, D1-D5 28S, and ITS1-5.8S-ITS2), applied BLAST and tree-based approaches for identification of R. corylivagrans n. sp., and performed the first molecular phylogenetic analysis focused on Rhyncaphytoptinae. Among the three genes, Cox1 showed better power when used for BLAST searches. Combined molecular phylogenetic analyses inferred R. corylivagrans n. sp. as sister to R. betulae, determined several moderately supported host-specific lineages of rhyncaphytoptines, and indicated a close relationship of the new species with members of the genus Rhinotergum. In two Rhinotergum spp. from Rosaceae, confocal microscopy revealed a new structure, the needle-like anterior process of the prodorsal shield, which is absent in R. corylivagrans n. sp. Additionally, the elements of the anal secretory apparatus presumably associated with silk-production and hypothesized as a synapomorphy of Eriophyoidea, were detected in the new species, providing the first documented report of this structure in Diptilomiopidae. Our study contributes to knowledge on the biodiversity of phytoparasites associated with hazelnuts and calls for future comparative phylogenetics of Diptilomiopidae. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study examined the extent to which delivery of the minimal Smoke-Free Homes intervention by trained 2-1-1 information and referral specialists had an effect on the adoption of home smoking bans in low-income households. A randomized controlled trial was conducted among 2-1-1 callers (n = 500) assigned to control or intervention conditions. 2-1-1 information and referral specialists collected baseline data and delivered the intervention consisting of 3 mailings and 1 coaching call; university-based data collectors conducted follow-up interviews at 3 and 6 months post-baseline. Data were collected from June 2013 through July 2014. Participants were mostly female (87.2%), African American (61.4%), and smokers (76.6%). Participants assigned to the intervention condition were more likely than controls to report a full ban on smoking in the home at both 3- (38.1% vs 19.3%, p = < .001) and 6-month follow-up (43.2% vs 33.2%, p = .02). The longitudinal intent-to-treat analysis showed a significant intervention effect over time (OR = 1.31, p = .001), i.e. OR = 1.72 at 6 months. This study replicates prior findings showing the effectiveness of the minimal intervention to promote smoke-free homes in low-income households, and extends those findings by demonstrating they can be achieved when 2-1-1 information and referral specialists deliver the intervention. Fall armyworm, Spodoptera frugiperda (J.E. Smith) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), is a target species of transgenic corn (Zea mays L.) that expresses single and pyramided Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) toxin. In 2014, S. frugiperda were collected from a light trap in North Carolina, and a total of 212 F1/F2 isofemale lines of S. frugiperda were screened for resistance to Bt and non-Bt corn. All of the 212 isolines were susceptible to corn tissue expressing Cry1A.105 + Cry2Ab, Cry1F + Cry1A.105 + Cry2Ab, and Cry1F + Cry1Ab + Vip3Aa20. Growth rate bioassays were performed to isolate non-recessive Bt resistance alleles. Seven individuals out of the 212 isofemale lines carried major non-recessive alleles conferring resistance to Cry1F. A pooled colony was created from the seven individuals. This colony was 151.21 times more resistant to Cry1F than a known-susceptible population and was also resistant to Cry1A.105, but was not resistant to Cry2Ab and Vip3Aa20. The results demonstrate that field populations of S. frugiperda collected from North Carolina are generally susceptible to Cry1F, but that some individuals carry resistant alleles. Three new species of Lumbriculidae were collected from floodplain seeps and small streams in southeastern North America. Some of these habitats are naturally acidic. Sylphella puccoon gen. n., sp. n. has prosoporous male ducts in X-XI, and spermathecae in XII-XIII. Muscular, spherical atrial ampullae and acuminate penial sheaths distinguish this monotypic new genus from other lumbriculid genera having similar arrangements of reproductive organs. Cookidrilus pocosinus sp. n. resembles its two subterranean, Palearctic congeners in the arrangement of reproductive organs, but is easily distinguished by the position of the spermathecal pores in front of the chaetae in X-XIII. Stylodrilus coreyi sp. n. differs from congeners having simple-pointed chaetae and elongate atria primarily by the structure of the male duct and the large clusters of prostate cells. Streams and wetlands of Southeastern USA have a remarkably high diversity of endemic lumbriculids, and these poorly-known invertebrates should be considered in conservation efforts.
