Block-flexure toppling failure is frequently encountered in interbedded anti-inclined rock (IAR) slopes, and seriously threatens the construction of hydropower infrastructure. In this study, we first investigated the Lean Reservoir area's geological setting and the Linda landslide's characteristics. Then, uniform design and random design were used to design 110 training datasets and 31 testing datasets, respectively. Afterwards, the toppling response was obtained by using the discrete element code. Finally, support vector regression was used to obtain the influence weights of 21 impact factors. The results show that the influence weight of the slope angle and rock formation dip angle on the toppling deformation among tertiary impact factors is 25.96% and 17.28%, respectively, which are much greater than the other 19 impact factors within the research range. For the primary impact factors, the influence weight is sorted from large to small as slope geometry parameters, joints parameters, and rock mechanics parameters. Joints parameters, especially the geometric parameters, cannot be ignored when evaluating the stability of IAR slopes. Through numerical simulation, it was qualitatively determined that failure surfaces of slopes were controlled by cross joints and that the rocks in the slope toe play a role in preventing slope deformation. The stability of an arching slope in deformable materials above strong rocks strongly depends on the shape and width of the span. Equations for a free surface problem that incorporate these two parameters were derived using a simplified two-dimensional arching slope model, and were validated using physical model tests under 1g and centrifugal conditions. The results are used to estimate the maximum excavation width for a weak claystone slope in a lignite mine, for which we calculate a safety factor of 1.31. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In recent years, numerous landslide catastrophes have occurred, generating considerable financial losses and other tolls. The deformational and mechanical properties of sliding zone soil would be in primary significance to landslide research, as the sliding zone basically controls the initiation and mobility of the landslide. An in situ triaxial test was carried out on a sample from the sliding zone of the Huangtupo 1# landslide, a subdivision of the Huangtupo landslide in the Three Gorges area of China. The test results indicate that (a) the sliding zone exhibits low compressibility due to the high rock content (54.3%) and long-time consolidation by the overlying soil mass; (b) only decaying creep occurs without abrupt failure, and a constitutive equation with both linear and nonlinear viscoplastic terms is deduced to accurately fit the test data; (c) the surface with an orientation of 35° presents anisotropic traits in terms of displacement, possibly due to cracks that formed at similar orientations within the sample cube; and (d) the creep behavior of the landslide may be closely related to the properties of the sliding zone soil. When a similar stress magnitude to that of the in situ stress environment is applied to the sample, the sliding zone soil behavior matches the landslide deformative behavior. The test results indicate that the Huangtupo 1# landslide will continue to creep, as interpreted from the deformation traits and structural properties of the sample. The accurate determination of crack initiation stress (CI) is significant for understanding rock deformation and failure. In this paper, a new concept is introduced, namely the relative compression strain response (RCSR), which represents the compressive deformation of the rock before dilatancy of the rock is introduced. An RCSR-based method for determining CI is proposed and compared with existing methods, i.e., (1) the volumetric strain (VS) method, (2) the lateral strain (LS) method, (3) the crack volumetric strain (CVS) method, (4) the cumulative acoustic emission hit tangent (CAEHT) method, and (5) the lateral strain response (LSR) method. Data for the comparison are collected from 227 uniaxial compression test and 222 compression test for diverse rock types. The comparison results show that, the CI determined using the proposed method is in good agreement with that determined using the existing methods. The CI values determined using different methods are similar, at approximately 0.5 of uniaxial compressive strength (UCS). The ratio of CI to peak strength (PS) is approximately 0.55 under triaxial compression, which is greater than the CI/UCS ratio. According to the analysis of variance (ANOVA), there is no statistical difference among the existing methods. Compared with the exisiting methods, the proposed method has advantages of avoiding users judgment subjectivity Thus, the RCSR method can be employed to determine the CI under uniaxial and triaxial compression. Orientation statistics are prone to bias when surveyed with the scanline mapping technique in which the observed probabilities differ, depending on the intersection angle between the fracture and the scanline. This bias leads to 1D frequency statistical data that are poorly representative of the 3D distribution. A widely accessible estimator named after Terzaghi was developed to estimate 3D frequencies from 1D biased observations, but the estimation accuracy is limited for fractures at narrow intersection angles to scanlines (termed the blind zone). Although numerous works have concentrated on accuracy with respect to the blind zone, accuracy outside the blind zone has rarely been studied. This work contributes to the limited investigations of accuracy outside the blind zone through a qualitative assessment that deploys a mathematical derivation of the Terzaghi equation in conjunction with a quantitative evaluation that uses fractures simulation and verification of natural fractures. The results show that the estimator does not provide a precise estimate of 3D distributions and that the estimation accuracy is correlated with the grid size adopted by the estimator. To explore the potential for improving accuracy, the particular grid size producing maximum accuracy is identified from 168 combinations of grid sizes and two other parameters. The results demonstrate that the 2° × 2° grid size provides maximum accuracy for the estimator in most cases when applied outside the blind zone. However, if the global sample density exceeds 0.5°, then maximum accuracy occurs at a grid size of 1° × 1°. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The estimation of shear strength of rock mass discontinuity is always a focal, but difficult, problem in the field of geotechnical engineering. Considering the disadvantages and limitation of existing estimation methods, a new approach based on the shadow area percentage (SAP) that can be used to quantify surface roughness is proposed in this article. Firstly, by the help of laser scanning technique, the three-dimensional model of the surface of rock discontinuity was established. Secondly, a light source was simulated, and there would be some shadows produced on the model surface. Thirdly, to obtain the value of SAP of each specimen, the shadow detection technique was introduced for use. Fourthly, compared with the result from direct shear testing and based on statistics, an empirical formula was found among SAP, normal stress, and shear strength. Data of Yujian (鱼简) River were used as an example, and the following conclusions have been made. (1) In the case of equal normal stress, the peak shear stress is positively proportional to the SAP. (2) The formula for estimating was derived, and the predictions of peak-shear strength made with this equation well agreed with the experimental results obtained in laboratory tests. The two crucial shape factors (elongation ratio and flatness ratio) of brittle particles may influence the dynamic breakage of brittle particles upon impact. Hence, three‐dimensional discrete element method simulations of brittle rock blocks with different shapes upon normal impact were performed. The simulated results indicate that the elongation ratio, that is, ratio of width to length and flatness ratio, that is, ratio of thickness to width can significantly affect the breakage of brittle rock blocks. Three fracture mechanisms, that is, fragmentation, horizontal tensile fracture and vertical tensile fracture, were revealed, which determine the dynamic breakage of rock blocks. The fragmentation results in numerous single‐sphered fragments with velocities even larger than 2 times of the initial velocities. Fragmentation can provide a buffering effect at high impact velocities of larger than 4 m/s. With an increasing elongation ratio or flatness ratio, the phenomenon of fragmentation gradually disappears. The reflection of a compression stress wave results in horizontal tensile fracture. Due to complex geological structures and strong crustal activity, geological disasters occur frequently in the upper reaches of the Yalong River, Southwest China. Toppling failure on anti-dip rock slopes is a common phenomenon; in particular, after the Wenchuan earthquake in 2008, numerous landslides caused by toppling deformation occurred in reservoir areas, seriously threatening the construction and operation of large-scale water conservancy projects and hydropower projects. Taking three typical toppling slopes in the basin as research objects, the dynamic behaviour, failure evolution, and failure plane location of toppling failure under seismic waves were investigated by shaking table tests and UDEC simulations. The test results indicated that slope angle and stratum dip angle were both inversely proportional to the stability of the slope in the tested ranges. The failure evolution of toppling on anti-dip rock slopes could be divided into four stages: (1) the development stage of tensile cracks in the strata; (2) the formative stage of tensile cracks at the crest of the slope; (3) the formative stage of toppling zones; and (4) the failure stage. Two equations were proposed to reveal the relationships between the surface peak ground acceleration and the horizontal depth of the failure plane and displacement of the slope surface. The propagation and coalescence of discontinuous cross joint in the slope and the entire failure evolution simulated by the UDEC damage model agreed well with the shaking table test results. Previous constitutive models of granite shear creep have two limitations: (1) although moisture greatly affects granite shear creep behavior, currently there are no constitutive models that include this factor; (2) there are also no models that include an acceleration stage. This paper presents an improved Burgers constitutive model with the addition of a damage parameter to characterize the moisture effect and uses a nonlinear relation equation between stress and strain for inclusion as the acceleration stage. The damage parameter is determined from granite creep experiment under four different moisture contents (0%, 0.22%, 0.49%, and 0.79%). The nonlinear relation equation is obtained by fitting a dataset of stain versus time under five different loading stages. To verify the presented model, a creep experiment was conducted on other granite samples and the results show that the model agrees well with the experimental observation data. Abstract: The paper provides a comprehensive review on rock joint roughness measurement and quantification procedures. Superiority of fractal based methods over JRC, statistical parameters and statistical functions in quantifying roughness is discussed in the paper. Two of the best fractal based methodologies available in the literature, the modified 2-D divider and variogram methods, are used to quantify natural rock joint roughness in 3-D and 2-D, respectively. The capability of these two methods in accurate quantification of natural rock joint roughness is shown in the paper by applying the procedures to four natural rock joints. A good comparison has been obtained from the values obtained through the two methods. Both these methodologies have two parameters to capture the stationary roughness. The fractal dimension captures the spatial auto correlation of roughness; the other parameter captures the amplitude of roughness. Anisotropic roughness has been studied by applying two other methodologies: (a) a triangular plate methodology and (b) a light source methodology to the same four natural rock joints. A reasonably good comparison has been obtained through the results of these two methodologies. All four roughness quantification methodologies can be applied to any size of sample covering from laboratory to field scales. The results of the triangular plate and light source methodologies provided possible sliding direction values (under the gravitational loading) close to that reported in the literature for the rough discontinuity planes used in the study. Assessing the influence of the impact pressure exerted on surrounding rock mass by potential debris flows is one of the challenges in a mountain tunnel construction project. This paper proposes an effective mathematical model for the assessment of impact pressure exerted by debris flows on obstacles. The characteristics of the new model are analyzed, and the parameters determination method for the new model are deduced. Also, a new method for dynamic reliability analysis of the rock mass surrounding tunnels is proposed and is constituted into three key steps. First, by inputting impact pressure of debris flows generated by the aforementioned new model, the FLAC3D is used as the dynamic analysis engine to obtain the time-varying stress distribution of surrounding rock mass during the impact of debris flow. Second, the factor of safety (FOS) contours of surrounding rock mass are generated based on element states using the maximum tensile stress criterion and the Mohr-Coulomb yield criterion. Third, by using the time-varying contours of the FOS, a failure probability and a reliability index are obtained from a reliability perspective. A case study shows the complete analysis process and confirms the effectiveness of the above methodology. A general discrete element method-based model is proposed to investigate the cyclic freezing-thawing induced damage of fractured rocks. A set of cracks is defined as an assembly of interparticle pores that are interconnected due to self-definition (pre-existing) or contact breaking (external force induced). During the freezing-thawing simulation, only the rock grains surrounding the cracks are subjected to frost heave pressure, which are expected to cause contact breaking and crack propagation. In this sense, most of the pores that do not form cracks in the numerical model will not participate in the calculation, so the computational cost and time are substantially reduced. The cracks connected to the atmosphere, i.e. the model boundaries, are classified as inactive cracks and their frost heave pressures are removed accordingly. Therefore, model convergence is recognized when all cracks are converted to inactive. Parametric analysis is further performed to show the influence of some important input parameters, including the unfrozen water content, calibration factor of frost heave pressure, crack density and dip. Finally, the freezing-thawing damage of rocks is quantified by the reduction in uniaxial compressive strength after a prescribed number of freezing-thawing cycles. The results are validated with an analytical solution. It is shown that the rock strength degradation, crack evolution, heave and settlement can be well simulated by the proposed model. Earthquake-induced rock slope failure is one of the most destructive geohazards, posing serious threats to human lives and properties. The potential hazard of a rock slope, under the loading of earthquakes, can be assessed from its failure and runout characteristics, which are however affected by inherent fractures. To simulate the randomness of these inherent fractures, the discrete fracture network (DFN) modeling technique that is based on the Monte Carlo simulation (MCS) is often employed. It is worthwhile noting that different realizations of DFN can be sampled from different MCSs; however, only one realization of DFN is considered and studied in the conventional analysis. There exist differences between the arbitrarily selected DFN and true DFN; as such, the conventional deterministic analysis could cause uncertainty in DFN modeling and the potential hazard of a rock slope cannot be accurately evaluated. In such a circumstance, this paper proposes a probabilistic analysis of earthquake-induced failure and runout behaviors of fractured rock slopes, in which multiple realizations of DFN that are systematically generated with MCS are taken as inputs to the discrete element method (DEM) modeling of slope behaviors, thus, the uncertainty induced by DFN modeling can be explicitly considered and evaluated.
