The aim of this paper is to perform a sociological and pastoral analysis of the religiousness of young people in Poland, which is a challenge to Catholic education. The authors analyse this issue based on the empirical study conducted in 2019 and 2020. The study employed an online survey questionnaire. The study included 1171 people, students in grades 7 and 8 of primary schools and of secondary schools in the Małopolskie and Podkarpackie Voivodships in Poland. The paper focuses on young people's self-declarations concerning: the religion they profess, faith, affiliation with a religious community, a bond to the community, the respondents' and their parents' attending religious services, celebrations/masses and praying individually. It was regarded as important to determine the correlations between the self-declarations of affiliation with a religious community and self-declaration of the religion professed and between the self-declarations of faith and bond to a religious community and self-declaration of the religion professed. These issues are enriched with the respondents' opinions on religion as a school subject. They provide an insight into not only the respondents' religiousness but also a diagnosis of young people's attitudes towards religion as a school subject. They allow for conclusions to be drawn on Catholic education in the secularising society, especially with young people increasingly often quitting religious lessons in schools. This paper presents the results of an original quantitative sociological study conducted in Autumn 2019 on a sample of 620 Polish migrants living in London, Oxford, and Swindon. The study was conducted using a groupadministered questionnaire. It was primarily to address the question of whether they intend to return to Poland and when. We identify some significant factors influencing their choices. Those are the length of stay in England, their financial situation, their knowledge of English, their ability to assimilate culturally, their relations to the families in Poland, homesickness, and better religious education of children. Religious issues, although mentioned, are less critical; however, a deeper statistical analysis allows to understand the religious background more broadly, to provide a clearer image of the respondents' deep motivations. The paper investigates how birth order and gender jointly influence naming decisions among Polish parents. The impact of birth order on the choice of first names has been extensively documented in historical and anthropological studies worldwide, but it has been largely ignored in sociological research on contemporary Western countries. The study is based on a survey of 317 users of a Polish parenting forum devoted to first names and naming decisions. The names of the first-born and second-born children of the research participants are compared in terms of their popularity and traditionality, measured both objectively and subjectively, in regard to the subjective motives declared behind the naming choices. The findings show that, on the whole, the first-born children received more popular and more traditional names than the second-borns. However, when the gender of the children was figured in, the difference between the first-born and the second-born boys turned out statistically significant only in the dimension of traditionality, whereas between the first-born and the second-born girls, only in the dimension of popularity. In a within-family comparison, the names given to siblings were found to be fairly consistent in both dimensions, and the gender of the first child influenced the preferences for the second one, especially if the latter was a girl. Those results can be interpreted in the frame of different social expectations towards the genders, with a particular focus on gendered concepts of the self. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper will examine some aspects of the formation of new residential areas, taking as an example the experience of one Polish city. The city under discussion developed quite rapidly due to the construction of a new industrial plant and considerable subsequent immigration. Attention is focused on the problem of the integration of newcomers and existing inhabitants. The paper refers to the town-planners' aims: how they were formulated and what methods were used to achieve them, as well as their social effects. However, some important social phenomena occurred which were not a direct product of conscious action by town planners and decision-taking bodies and these will also be mentioned. The relationship between sociological research and social practice will also be examined. The paper treats cities as specific socio-spatial entities, thus it is assumed that any phenomenon within an organized urban area has its specific social consequences and all-important social phenomena are reflected in the ways in which space is used and in attitudes towards it. Moreover, it is taken for granted that if objective facts are important, they must be reflected in social consciousness. Conversely, opinions or stereotypes, which exist in social consciousness influence and even, hinder actions. These individual and group decisions or actions constitute the above-mentioned objective facts.

This paper draws a parallel between the biographical narrative life-story interview technique and psychoanalytic therapy. It points out that this type of interview may, in some cases, assist with the re-construction of a new narrative identity of the interviewee. Where there is practically no intervention by the interviewer it can do this just by providing the interviewee with a situation where there is someone who does not want anything other than to listen to her life narrative. Through this process there can be a therapeutic effect which is more than a joyful by-product, which the interviewees not only unconsciously experience, but for which they overtly express their gratitude. The paper features the case of such a woman, who was sterilised in Auschwitz. It also tells the story of a man where the interviewer experienced incredibly strong resistance and projective identification throughout the interview. This resulted in almost insoluble guilt in the interviewer. The paper tries to interpret the story of the interviewee, who is also a Shoah survivor, and is unable to make some things in his life story explicit. The interpretation suggests that he might have killed some Arrow Cross officers in order to take their uniforms to help others. He has lived for the last 60 years with feelings of insoluble guilt. The question is raised whether in this case the interview had a similar therapeutic effect to the first case or not. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The paper approaches the biggest constructional catastrophe in Polish history. Article focuses on conditions and causes of crises. Conditions refer to: biophysical factors, natural and technical ones, different institutional rules acting in variable spheres of life, as well as various characteristics of community. All of them create context of actions of human beings. Those conditions combined with intentional, rationally bounded and opportunistic individual, transform into causes of social events (positive and negative). Catastrophe in Chorzów-Katowice was a result of all of those elements mentioned above. New institutional approach used in this paper seems to be the most productive to explain and understand different social crises. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper records the Polish aspects of P. F. Lazarsfeld's sociointellectual biography and examines his impact on Polish sociology. The analysis is divided into three chronological parts. In the 1930s, Lazarsfeld's empirical work inspired Polish sociologists in their studies on unemployment. In the late 1950s and 1960s, his model of empirical social research shaped the style of sociological practice in Poland. In the 1990s, some of Lazarsfeld's substantive contributions, mainly in the area of election studies, were taken up in Polish sociology. This paper presents the kinds of applications of institutional data in sociological research, the difficulties encountered by researchers who use it, and the ways of overcoming these difficulties. An essential methodological feature of empirical sociology as of January 1988, in particular in Poland, is its domination by survey research. However, this fact is not only a feature of sociology, but a blemish on its face. What is reprehensible is obviously not the use itself of questionnaire data, but the fact that empirical sociology is dominated by them, that in concrete studies they are almost always the only kind of data collected, that only rarely is heir quality verified though comparison with data of another kind. So empirical sociology should boldly make use of forgotten, unappreciated, and undeveloped non-survey data collection methods. The author chiefly has in mind a bolder use than before of data contained in institutional sources: reports, statistics, and other documents. According to him, sociologists are even unaware of the existence of many institutional sources of importance for sociology, while they pass by others indifferently, instead of deriving knowledge from them about the society in which they live. The aim of this paper is to encourage sociologists to look into this source and to show how knowledge can be derived form it.

This article presents a study that aims to examine factors affecting transformation of an urban community under conditions of rapid town development. Taking one Polish city as an example, the paper shows some aspects of residential collectivity formation. This city developed quite rapidly as a new industrial plant was built within the area. Thus the urban community was increased by a considerable number of immigrants. The central problem of interest was the integration between new comers and original inhabitants. The paper would also like to present the town planners goals, how they were formulated and what methods were used to attain them. It seems that the social effects of these actions are also of importance. Nevertheless, some social phenomena occurred despite conscious action of town planners and decision making bodies. The connections between sociological research and social practice, the possibilities and the range of their applications can also be analyzed using this example. A city is treated as a specific socio-spatial entity. On this basis, the author assumes that any phenomenon within an organized urban area has its specific social consequences, and all important social phenomena are reflected in methods of space exploitation and the attitudes towards it.

Polish sociologists' attention to their country's postwar industrialization has been influenced by their belief that the course of industrialization processes is a test of implementation of ideological premises and operational principles for a political system and an economy of a new kind, while at the same time it provides a constant criterion for assessing government and party leaderships' functional efficiency. Despite the nearly universal interest in industrialization problems, certain characteristic weaknesses have been demonstrated in the treatment of this subject. Rarely is industrialization dealt with as a combination of closely interconnected problems: ideological, political, social, economic, and technological-organizational, whose solutions should be sought in comprehensively and dynamically approached processes. This article uses excerpts from a co-authored paper prepared for the joint Polish -Finnish conference, held on November 15-19, 1977, in Vuoranta near Helsinki, Finland. Sociological research on industrialization in Poland to date reveals the following lines of study: Description and analysis of the sociocultural effects of side effects of industrialization; Employee behavior and operation of organizations connected with industry and economy; and so on.

The article provides information on the Ninth Polish Sociological Congress, organized by the Polish Sociological Association, which was held in Lublin on June 27-30, 1994. The title of the Lublin Congress reflected the change which has taken. place in Poland and was formulated as follows, "People and Institutions: The Coming of a New Social Order." The Congress opened with J. Szczepański's paper of honor, "People and Institutions: The Emergence of the Political System of the Polish People's Republic and Parallel Transformations in Polish Society." Traditionally; day one was devoted to the state of sociology in Poland. J. Szàcki with his paper on "Freedom, Democracy, and the Traditions of Polish Sociology" was the keynote speaker. The main focus of the congress was the description and theoretical analysis of the process of development of a new social order in Poland. Discussions concentrated on the role of people and institutions, the "state" and the "market," planning and spontaneity in this process.

The article presents a novel approach to understanding the impact of migration on sending countries. It looks at the topic the other way round from conventional approaches. Rather than only studying migrants' influence on countries of origin, as migration scholars naturally do, I recommend first mapping social trends in sending countries to understand the most significant changes, before analysing why change takes place. Such analysis involves qualitative sociological research to understand the causes of change: how social remittances and more indirect migration influences combine with other factors. Focusing on sending country residents, the approach also applies concepts and findings from receiving societies research. The approach encourages a thorough investigation of transnational social space, seeing sociological phenomena such as socialisation or social activism taking place across international borders. The case study is twenty-first century Europe, with its dense and diverse migration patterns. The article discusses my experience of applying the approach to Poland, suggesting that migration exposure's special role may be to reinforce national trends (e.g. towards more open-to-difference attitudes) even in social groups and geographical locations which are generally more conservative. Public policy, as the youngest of the political sciences, began to take shape in the early 1950s in the field of political science, particularly in the United States, under the influence of empirical research in the framework of the so called Policy Analysis. The use of sociological methods in this research was one of the factors that shifted political science toward public policy theory, while sociological inspiration was also present in the theoretical plane of this shift (for example, the influence of J. Dewey on H. Lasswell, etc.). Alongside, the American school, in Germany Politikfeldanalysen developed in a partly different direction, and the French politique publique with the strongest influence of sociology. Some attention has already been given to comparing these "national schools" in the development of public policy and its theory in these "classical" countries. The present study compares the course of the interaction between political science, sociology, and public policy in three Central European countries -- the Czech Republic, Slovakia, and Poland -- where these relations were able to develop only following the establishment of democratic social order in the early 1990s. Both in the Czech and Slovak Republic, during totalitarian political system political sciences ceased to exist and when back in 1990s they were restored, sociologists participated as well, which, in turn had positive impact on the start of public policy within the framework of political sciences. In Poland, however, the politology cal science survived in a format under influence of ideology, but it did not established a framework to give rise to public policy, that was here replaced by other sciences. The article focuses on selected values of traditional culture in the light of two collections of memoirs. The present paper is concerned with several selected values, essential for traditional culture, whose reflection can be found in "Mlode pokolenie chlopów, one of the most outstanding achievements of Polish rural sociology, edited and introduced by Józef Chalasi&nskiski;. The values to be discussed are social values connected with the social status of peasants and the socialization of peasant children in Polish rural areas before the World War II. The later fortunes of those values and the changes in that respect after 1945 can be reconstructed on the basis of another collection of memoirs, entitled "Mlode pokolenie wsi Polski Ludowej." For centuries, one's being born in a peasant family used unambiguously to determine his future position in the social hierarchy in Poland, to determine his future position in the social hierarchy in Poland, namely the lowest position in that hierarchy.

This article discusses a bibliography on the sociological writings of Polish authors, that are published in other languages in Poland and elsewhere. The bibliography contains works that fringe upon sociology and other social sciences. However, it does not cover publicism. The bibliography also contains writings of scientists living in Poland before the post-war period. Publications that are recorded in the bibliography include: books written or edited by Polish authors, papers from collective works, papers from scientific journals, end essays, Polish issues of foreign scientific journals and foreign language, special issues of Polish scientific journals. Papers are historical, theoretical or review. They are research reports or information about the state of sociological research. The bibliography records first and later editions, revisions and translations of the works that are published in other languages. The material collected in the bibliography has been classified according to the branches of sociology. Within the branches works have been arranged in the alphabetical order according to the names of their authors and title of collective works.

This article presents an in-depth study of how Polish entrepreneurs in Munich, Germany, make use of their economic, social and cultural capital acquired in Poland and in Germany to position themselves transnationally. The article studies these migrants’ life courses and draws attention to cross-border intersections between their cultural, social and economic capital with roots in different places. The article also throws light on the subjective evaluation of economic capital of migrants in a transnational frame. Three types of transnational social positioning of the migrants are discerned (single space, bi-local and overlapping), which suggest a new reading of Bourdieu’s work that is better adapted to the theoretical challenges faced by researchers who study people in transnational spaces. This is a participant-observation study of shopping in Poland during severe consumer shortages. Field work was done in November and December of 1982 in three Polish cities. The focus was to observe shopping queues, behavior in those queues, and to interview shoppers about their shopping tactics within and outside of the queues. One-hundred and forty queues were observed and 158 people were interviewed. Observations of queues included their size, composition, organization over long waits, and the behavior of queue participants. Shopping tactics are actions meant to locate scarce goods and save time with shopping. Some shopping tactics were done alone, but more likely these tactics involved others in shopping and distribution teams.
