Background: Rainfall and other climatic agents are the main triggers of soil erosion in the Mediterranean region, where they have the potential to increase discharge and sediment transport and cause long-term changes in the river system. For the Magra River Basin (MRB), located in the upper Tyrrhenian coast of Italy, we estimated changes in net erosion as a function of the geographical characteristics of the basin, the seasonal distribution of precipitation, and the vegetation cover., Methods and Findings: Based on rainfall erosivity and surface flow and transport sub-models, we developed a simplified model to assess basin-wide sediment yields on a monthly basis by upscaling the point rainfall input. Our calibration dataset of monthly data (Mg km-2 month-1, available for the years 1961 and 1963-1969) revealed that our model satisfactorily reproduces the net soil erosion in the study area (R2 = 0.81). For the period 1950-2020, the reconstruction of an annually aggregated time-series of monthly net erosion data (297 Mg km-2 yr-1 on average) indicated a moderate decline in sediment yield after 1999. This is part of a long-term downward trend, which highlights the role played by land-use changes and reforestation of the mountainous areas of the basin., Conclusion: This study shows the environmental history and dynamics of the basin, and thus the varying sensitivity of hydrological processes and their perturbations. Relying on a few climatic variables as reported from a single representative basin location, it provides an interpretation of empirically determined factors that shape active erosional landscapes. Hazardous hydrological events cause soil erosion and it is essential to anticipate the potential environmental impacts of prevailing erosion processes that occur at different time-scales. Here, we present the modelling of net soil erosion rates for the Bradano River Basin (southern Italy), based on rainfall erosivity, surface overland flow and transport sub-models. A semi-empirical framework was developed, upscaling point rainfall values based on the Foster-Thornes approach in order to give an insight into monthly and annual soil losses over the period 1950–1958 and 1961 (calibration) and over a longer time-frame (1950–2020: reconstruction). In the 2765-km2 study area, ~ 68% of the sediment mobilized within the basin reached the basin outlet (mean value for 1950–2020: ~ 366 Mg km−2 yr−1). A moderate declining trend in net erosion rates was observed after the 1980s, concurrent with the contraction of cropland in favour of natural vegetation and river channelization. Our results suggest that the parsimonious principle used here seems sufficiently robust to be suitable for applications in other Mediterranean landscapes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Societies can be better prepared to face hydrological extremes (e.g. flash floods) by understanding the trends and variability of rainfall aggressiveness and its derivative, erosivity density (ED). Estimating extended time series of ED is, however, scientifically challenging because of the paucity of long-term high-resolution pluviometric observations. This research presents the longest ED time series reconstruction (1701–2019) in northwest Italy (Piedmont region) to date, which is analysed to identify damaging hydrological periods. With this aim, we developed a model consistent with a sample (1981–2015) of detailed novel Revised Universal Soil Loss Erosion-based high-resolution data and documentary hydrological extreme records. The modelled data show a noticeable rising trend in ED from 1897 onwards, together with an increase of extreme values for return periods of 10 and 50 years, consistent with the Clausius‐Clapeyron scaling of extreme rainfall. We also suggest the North Atlantic Oscillation and Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation may be associated with rainfall extremes in Piedmont. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Rainfall erosivity and its derivative, erosivity density (ED, i.e., the erosivity per unit of rain), is a main driver of considerable environmental damages and economic losses worldwide. This study is the first to investigate the interannual variability, and return periods, of both rainfall erosivity and ED over the Mediterranean for the period 1680–2019. By capturing the relationship between seasonal rainfall, its variability, and recorded hydrological extremes in documentary data consistent with a sample (1981–2015) of detailed Revised Universal Soil Loss Erosion-based data, we show a noticeable decreasing trend of rainfall erosivity since about 1838. However, the 30-year return period of ED values indicates a positive long-term trend, in tandem with the resurgence of very wet days (> 95th percentile) and the erosive activity of rains during the past two decades. A possible fingerprint of recent warming is the occurrence of prolonged wet spells in apparently more erratic and unexpected ways. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Rainfall and overland flow are fundamental processes for Earth's ecosystems but can also be land disturbing forces, particularly when triggered by extreme hydro-meteorological events. Examples of these extremes are rainstorms and related phenomena due to rainfall aggressiveness. They produce high-impact land processes such as soil erosion and nutrient losses. Economic and social consequences of these processes can be quite severe. However, hydrological extremes and their environmental implications are still poorly understood, particularly if analyzed in the context of climate change. Here, we analyze a 300 year long times series of historical rainfall patterns across the Mediterranean in the last three centuries and we investigate changes in the erosive forcing as related to climate changes. Our results show that the erosive forcing increased towards the end of the Little Ice Age (~1850) over western and central Mediterranean and that has been increasing in the recent warming period at low Mediterranean latitudes, due to a higher frequency of intensive storms. Such increased concentrated precipitation may lead to an intensification of land degradation processes triggered by soil erosion and transport across a range of scales from hillslopes to small catchments. Summary: This work presents three empirical models (MMFI, Morais Modification of Fournier Index; GJRM, Grimm–Jones–Rusco–Montanarella; REMDB, Diodato–Bellocchi Rainfall–Erosivity Model) where monthly-based climate data are used to estimate long-term (R)USLE (Universal Soil Loss Equation and its Revisions) rainfall erosivity factor (R m, MJmmh−1 ha−1 month−1). The objective was to evaluate two known models (MMFI and GJRM), and compare the results with the novel model REMDB meant for complex terrains. MMFI and GJRM are both based on the precipitation amount, whilst REMDB takes site latitude, elevation and precipitation seasonality also into account. The test area was the Italian region, where 30 stations (altitudes from about sea level up to 1270m, over the latitudinal range 36–46°North) with sufficient data to calculate R m according to USLE were available. The three models were evaluated against USLE rainfall erosivity over a validation data set of 14 stations, using a range of performance statistics. The REMDB estimates generally compared well with the USLE estimates according to different statistics. For REMDB, the relative root mean square error was, in average, 48.58% against 71.49% for MMFI and 66.55% for GJRM. The average modelling efficiency of REMDB was 0.51 against −0.02 (MMFI) and 0.13 (GJRM). REMDB was also superior in preventing biased errors in time, as quantified by the average pattern index versus months: 17.65MJmmh−1 ha−1 month−1, against 58.54MJmmh−1 ha−1 month−1 (MMFI) and 57.76MJmm h−1 ha−1 month−1 (GJRM). Of the two simplified models, the MMFI was the worst performer while the GJRM model performed similarly to the REMDB at two mid-altitude sites of Central Italy. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Regional studies on the erosive power of rainfall patterns are still limited and the actual impacts that may follow on erosional and sedimentation processes are poorly understood. Given the several interrelated challenges of environmental management, it is also not always unclear what is relevant for the development of adaptive and integrated approaches facilitating sustainable water resource management. This editorial introduces the Special Issue entitled "Rainfall Erosivity in Soil Erosion Processes", which offers options to fill some of these gaps. Three studies performed in China and Central Asia (by Duulatov et al., Water2019, 11, 897, Xu et al., 2019, 11, 2429, Gu et al. 2020, 12, 200) show that the erosion potential of rainfall is increasing in this region, driving social, economic, and environmental consequences. In the same region (the Weibei Plateau in China), Fu et al. (Water2019, 11, 1514) assessed the effect of raindrop energy on the splash distance and particle size distribution of aggregate splash erosion. In the Mediterranean, updated estimates of current and future rainfall erosivity for Greece are provided by Vantas et al. (Water2020, 12, 687), while Diodato and Bellocchi (Water2019, 11, 2306) reconstructed and investigated seasonal net erosion in an Italian catchment using parsimonious modelling. Then, this Special Issue includes two technologically oriented articles by Ricks at al. The first (Water2019, 11, 2386) evaluated a large-scale rainfall simulator design to simulate rainfall with characteristics similar to natural rainfall. The data provided contribute to the information that may be useful for the government's decision making when considering landscape changes caused by variations in the intensity of a rainfall event. The second article (Water2020, 12, 515) illustrated a laboratory-scale test of mulching methods to protect against the discharge of sediment-laden stormwater from active construction sites (e.g., highway construction projects). In the low Mediterranean basin, late spring and autumn rainfall events have the potential to increase discharge and transport substantial amounts of sediment soil (that is, the net soil erosion from a watershed). For the Alento River Basin (ARB), located in the low Tyrrhenian coast of Italy, we estimated changes of net erosion as dependent on the seasonality of antecedent soil moisture and its control on rainfall-runoff and erosivity. Based on rainfall and runoff erosivity sub-models, we developed a simplified model to evaluate basin-wide sediment yields on a monthly basis by upscaling point rainfall input. For the period 1951–2018, the reconstruction of a time series of monthly net erosion data indicated a decreasing trend of the sediment yield after 1991. Revegetation and land abandonment that occurred in the last decades can explain such a decrease of net erosion, which occurred even when rainfall erosivity increased. This response, obtained at the basic scale, does not exclude that rapidly developing mesoscale convective systems, typically responsible for the heaviest and most destructive rainfall events in the ARB, can affect small catchments, which are the most vulnerable systems to storm-driven flash floods and soil erosion hazards during soil tilling in spring and at beginning of autumn. Pulsing storms and prolonged rainfall can drive hydrological damaging events in mountain regions with soil erosion and debris flow in river catchments. The paper presents a parsimonious model for estimating climate forcing on sediment loads in an Alpine catchment (Rio Cordon, northeastern Italian Alps). Hydroclimatic forcing was interpreted by the novel CliSM SSL (Climate-Scale Modelling of Suspended Sediment Load) model to estimate annual sediment loads. We used annual data on suspended-solid loads monitored at an experimental station from 1987 to 2001 and on monthly precipitation data. The quality of sediment load data was critically examined, and one outlying year was identified and removed from further analyses. This outlier revealed that our model underestimates exceptionally high sediment loads in years characterized by a severe flood event. For all other years, the CliSM SSL performed well, with a determination coefficient ( R 2 ) equal to 0.67 and a mean absolute error ( MAE ) of 129 Mg y −1 . The calibrated model for the period 1986–2010 was used to reconstruct sediment loads in the river catchment for historical times when detailed precipitation records are not available. For the period 1810–2010, the model results indicate that the past centuries have been characterized by large interannual to interdecadal fluctuations in the conditions affecting sediment loads. This paper argues that climate-induced erosion processes in Alpine areas and their impact on environment should be given more attention in discussions about climate-driven strategies. Future work should focus on delineating the extents of these findings (e.g., at other catchments of the European Alpine belt) as well as investigating the dynamics for the formation of sediment loads. An in-depth analysis of the interannual variability of storms is required to detect changes in soil erosive power of rainfall, which can also result in severe on-site and off-site damages. Evaluating long-term rainfall erosivity is a challenging task, mainly because of the paucity of high-resolution historical precipitation observations that are generally reported at coarser temporal resolutions (e.g., monthly to annual totals). In this paper we suggest overcoming this limitation through an analysis of long-term processes governing rainfall erosivity with an application to datasets available the central Ruhr region (Western Germany) for the period 1701–2011. Based on a parsimonious interpretation of seasonal rainfall-related processes (from spring to autumn), a model was derived using 5-min erosivity data from 10 stations covering the period 1937–2002, and then used to reconstruct a long series of annual rainfall erosivity values. Change-points in the evolution of rainfall erosivity are revealed over the 1760s and the 1920s that mark three sub-periods characterized by increasing mean values. The results indicate that the erosive hazard tends to increase as a consequence of an increased frequency of extreme precipitation events occurred during the last decades, characterized by short-rain events regrouped into prolonged wet spells.
